- 0:07their automotive and motorsports pasts.
- 0:09As a bonus, let's go behind the scenes with this pit stop minisode
- 0:13for some extra content that didn't quite fit in the main episode.

- 0:24Hey everybody, Crew Chief Eric here.
- 0:27In this Pit Stop episode, we're going to jump back to the 2016 season to
- 0:31listen in on an interview that had been conducted by the International
- 0:35Motor Racing Research Center after Amy Ruman's first championship win leading
- 0:40into her second championship season.
- 0:43The content is taken from the 50 Years of Trans Am Center conversation
- 0:47that was done during the 2016 season, and it's introduced by Judy Stropas,
- 0:52and the interview is conducted by Josh Ashby from the Center.
- 0:56This might be a good time to jump again to current season, and Amy Ruhman as
- 1:01the reigning champion, and now with a couple of races left, she is leading
- 1:06in the points, and you say she's tied?
- 1:09Oh, I saw one point difference, but a little bit of Amy's background.
- 1:13She's the first female Trans Am champion.
- 1:15Has worked her way up to the championship with her family centered team.
- 1:18Was a podium finisher at the 2010 SCCS in GT one, and then turned to TransAm.
- 1:24Has competed in all TransAm series for the past five years, finished second in
- 1:282012, fourth and 2013, and third in 2014.
- 1:32Won her first TransAm race in 2011 and had her first poll in 2014.
- 1:36In 2015.
- 1:37Won the last three races of the year to finish the title.
- 1:41This is Josh Ashby with the Motor Racing Research Center, interviewing
- 1:44Amy Reumann, Trans Am Series driver, for our conversation, of
- 1:48course, on the Trans Am Series.
- 1:50Once again, welcome back to Watkins Glen, Amy.
- 1:52I know I've said that a few times.
- 1:53Great to be back.
- 1:54Um, first off, what does the Trans Am Series mean to you?
- 1:58Not only as a driver, but I'm assuming a fan since your father
- 2:01did run it for a few years.
- 2:03You know, it's obviously very important to us.
- 2:05It's legendary in our minds and actually, I think, in the U. S.
- 2:09So, personally, um, it means a lot to me, especially to get to the level we're
- 2:15at today with winning the championship.
- 2:18And with my dad being in the series for so long and us being a part of
- 2:22it, it's great to continue on the tradition of running in the series.
- 2:27I, quite frankly, think it's one of the most exciting
- 2:29road racing series out there.
- 2:31You've made some history being the first woman to win the championship.
- 2:34How does it feel to be in the same record book as Gurney, Donahue,
- 2:38Jones, Fulmer, Posey, and Revson?
- 2:41Yeah, to be mentioned with those names clearly is absolutely an honor.
- 2:45It's really legendary, the series overall, if you go back through and look
- 2:50at the history of it, who's runnin it.
- 2:52You know, you take a step back and you're like, wow, I really am in that group now.
- 2:56You know, I don't really compare myself with people, but to do what we did and to
- 3:00achieve what we achieved on our own, you know, as a single base privateer team, a
- 3:06family run base team and to come where we were to fruition today is really an honor.
- 3:12It's exciting.
- 3:13You know, we're still excited about it and we're trying to come back
- 3:16this year and defend the title again.
- 3:17And, you know, being a first at anything is, you know, it's exciting.
- 3:21It doesn't matter what it is, but we've definitely made a mark for ourselves.
- 3:25Speaking to Trans Am's history over the Last 50 years, the cars have changed a
- 3:29lot, from basically showroom stock cars with a cage and several modifications,
- 3:34shall we say, thrown in there, to today's purpose built Trans Am car.
- 3:39What do you think is one of the best changes that happened, and
- 3:42where do you see the Trans Am series being in the next 15 to 20 years?
- 3:46Well, clearly, uh, we're excited to have the kind of horsepower that we run.
- 3:50With the big motors that we're running, 358s now, the power
- 3:53we put down is incredible.
- 3:55You know, I think that's exciting.
- 3:57You know, I think it gives the transition of the series over the 50 years.
- 4:01People can still relate to our cars.
- 4:03We're trying to, with the TA2 class, bring in kind of that pony war type
- 4:08tradition that they used to run.
- 4:10Definitely still, there's a crossover into the mainstream.
- 4:15American that they can still relate to us, but, you know, everybody
- 4:18just likes to watch a fast race car.
- 4:20So that's really where it's at for us.
- 4:22It's all about power and, uh, getting out there and giving the fans a show.
- 4:28And you definitely do that.
- 4:29I know when you were up here earlier this year, we had some students coming
- 4:33in for the Green Grand Prix and as soon as they saw your car, they're
- 4:35like, Oh my God, just imagining.
- 4:39And of course you turned it over and then they were like, Whoa.
- 4:42Yeah.
- 4:42If you look at the tracks that Trans Am has run over its entire history, you see
- 4:46that's some of America's best racetracks.
- 4:49What track, present or past, would you like to see on the race schedule?
- 4:54Even if the track is shut down, would you love to run it?
- 4:57I'm glad that Watkins Glen clearly is back on the, uh, This is my favorite racetrack.
- 5:03I've said that throughout the years.
- 5:05It's just one of a kind here.
- 5:07And especially with the new improvements that they've made with the pavement.
- 5:11It's going to be unbelievable fast.
- 5:13And there's just so many different elements to this racetrack that
- 5:16just are really fun to drive.
- 5:19You know, we do have the opportunity to race at all the
- 5:22best racetracks around the country.
- 5:24It's a little more expensive for us to go out to the west coast now,
- 5:27but I wouldn't mind seeing Laguna Seca back on the schedule, if we
- 5:31did some sort of west coast swing.
- 5:33And also, I'm a fan of the street course.
- 5:35If we could get back on the schedule with the, we're gonna be running at
- 5:38the Detroit Grand Prix this year, so that'll be exciting to be back on track.
- 5:42I was fond of Three Rivers for street tracks.
- 5:45Toronto, Long Beach, I would love to see some of those come back, but probably
- 5:50just mainstream road course, you know, Watkins Glen, and I'm not saying that
- 5:54just because I'm here, but uh, no, I've, I've said that throughout my career.
- 5:58It's pretty much my favorite racetrack.
- 6:00What do you think, not only as a driver, but an entrant as well, do you think
- 6:04makes Trans Am such a lasting series?
- 6:07You know, to make it 50 years when some series are like five
- 6:11and done, if they're lucky.
- 6:12Right.
- 6:13I think, you know, the passion is with the competitors.
- 6:16It's never left.
- 6:18The fans have never left us.
- 6:19They've always been supportive.
- 6:21Like I said, I think our format works.
- 6:24We're a hundred mile race.
- 6:26It's exciting to watch for, you know, 70 minutes, 75 minutes worth of racing.
- 6:31You have to get it done in that amount of time.
- 6:33So it's intense while you're out there.
- 6:36I think that model works with the fans and I think it works with us competitors.
- 6:40Takes away the element of a pit stop or things that could go wrong with
- 6:43driver changes and things like that.
- 6:45It's just a different nature versus endurance racing.
- 6:50But I think each series brings it's own different element and I think that's our
- 6:54strong suit to be a 100 mile sprint race.
- 6:56To get it done and make it really exciting for the fans to watch.
- 7:00What's the closest finish you've ever had?
- 7:02Oh boy.
- 7:04I'd say, uh, wow, that's a lot of races for me to review.
- 7:08One of the top finishes I'd have to say in my career thus far
- 7:13was the Koda race last year.
- 7:16It came down to Cliff Edmund and I on the last lap on a restart
- 7:20close to the end of the race.
- 7:22He had gotten by me and then we came back around and we were side by side.
- 7:26I took him into one.
- 7:27We were side by side.
- 7:29Through one, down the hill, through the whole entire S's at Coda, then
- 7:35up that little hill in the back, and I finally was able to pass him,
- 7:39and that was the last lap and I won.
- 7:40So probably, off the top of my head, that's a pretty good finish for us.
- 7:45Obviously, including yours, what is your favorite car?
- 7:48When you think of Trans Am, what car comes to your head?
- 7:51Oh, the number 23 McNichols Corvette, of course.
- 7:54I can't, I can't deny that.
- 7:56Of course, yeah.
- 7:57You know, uh, it's She served you well.
- 7:59Yes, both of them, both of them.
- 8:01We got our first win in my dad's original car.
- 8:04At the end of 2011, that was our first win, we were going to park the
- 8:08car, we had purchased a newer one.
- 8:10So to get the win in that, our very first win in that car was exciting for us.
- 8:15A fitting end to it, although we did get it back out of
- 8:18retirement once or twice, but.
- 8:20So I, I, you know, I got to go with my favorite car is of course my car.
- 8:24All right.
- 8:25Well, thank you again.
- 8:26I appreciate this so much.
- 8:28Sure.
- 8:28Thanks for having us.
- 8:30And hopefully you'll end with a win again this weekend.
- 8:33Hopefully we're looking forward to it.
- 8:35All right.
