Speaker 1: Chapter five, Pinocchio is hungry and looks for an egg
• 0:06
Speaker 1: to cook himself an omelet, but to his surprise, the
• 0:09
Speaker 1: omelet flies out the window. If the cricket's death scared
• 0:13
Speaker 1: Pinocchio at all, it was only for a few moments.
• 0:16
Speaker 1: For as night came on, a queer empty feeling at
• 0:20
Speaker 1: the pit of his stomach reminded the marionette that he
• 0:22
Speaker 1: had eaten nothing. As yet, a boy's appetite grows very fast,
• 0:27
Speaker 1: and in a few moments the queer empty feeling had
• 0:30
Speaker 1: become hunger, and the hunger grew bigger and bigger, until
• 0:34
Speaker 1: soon he was as ravenous as a bear. Poor Pinocchio
• 0:39
Speaker 1: ran to the fireplace where the pot was boiling, and
• 0:42
Speaker 1: stretched out his hand to take the cover off, but
• 0:45
Speaker 1: to his amazement, the pot was only painted. Think how
• 0:49
Speaker 1: he felt his long nose became at least two inches longer.
• 0:54
Speaker 1: He ran about the room, dug in all the boxes
• 0:57
Speaker 1: and drawers, and even looked under the bed and search
• 1:00
Speaker 1: of a piece of bread, hard though it might be,
• 1:03
Speaker 1: or a cookie, or perhaps a bit of fish a
• 1:06
Speaker 1: bone left by a dog would have tasted good to him.
• 1:09
Speaker 1: But he found nothing, And meanwhile his hunger grew and grew.
• 1:15
Speaker 1: The only relief poor Pinocchio had was to yawn, And
• 1:19
Speaker 1: he certainly did yawn, such a big yawn that his
• 1:22
Speaker 1: mouth stretched out to the tips of his ears. Soon
• 1:25
Speaker 1: he became dizzy and faint. He wept and wailed to himself.
• 1:30
Speaker 1: The talking cricket was right. It was wrong of me
• 1:34
Speaker 1: to disobey father and to run away from home. If
• 1:36
Speaker 1: he were here now, I wouldn't be so hungry. Oh,
• 1:40
Speaker 1: how horrible it is to be hungry. Suddenly he saw
• 1:44
Speaker 1: among the sweepings in the corner, something round and white
• 1:47
Speaker 1: that looked very much like a hen's egg. In a jiffy,
• 1:51
Speaker 1: he pounced upon it. It was an egg. The marionette's
• 1:55
Speaker 1: joy knew no bounds. It is impossible to describe it.
• 1:59
Speaker 1: You must pitch here it to yourself. Certain that he
• 2:02
Speaker 1: was dreaming, he turned the egg over and over in
• 2:04
Speaker 1: his hands, fondled it, kissed it, and talked to it.
• 2:09
Speaker 1: And now how shall I cook you? Shall I make
• 2:11
  Speaker 1: you an omelet?
• 2:12
Speaker 2: No? It is better to fry you in a pan.
• 2:15
Speaker 2: Or shall I drink you? No? The best way is
• 2:18
Speaker 2: to fry you in the pan. You will taste better.
• 2:21
Speaker 1: No, sooner said than done. He placed a little pan
• 2:24
Speaker 1: over a footwarmer full of hot coals. In the pan
• 2:28
Speaker 1: instead of oil or butter, he poured a little water.
• 2:31
Speaker 1: As soon as the water started to boil, dack, he
• 2:34
Speaker 1: broke the egg shell. But in place of the white
• 2:37
Speaker 1: and the yolk of the egg, a little yellow chick,
• 2:41
Speaker 1: fluffy and gay and smiling, escape from it. Bowing politely
• 2:46
Speaker 1: to Pinocchio, he said to him.
• 2:49
Speaker 2: Many, many thanks, indeed, mister Pinocchio, for having saved me
• 2:52
Speaker 2: the trouble of breaking my shell. Goodbye and good luck
• 2:55
Speaker 2: to you, and remember me to the family.
• 2:58
Speaker 1: With these words, he spread out his wings, and, darting
• 3:01
Speaker 1: to the open window, he flew away into space till
• 3:04
Speaker 1: he was out of sight. The poor marionette stood as
• 3:08
Speaker 1: if turned to stone, with wide eyes, open mouthed, and
• 3:12
Speaker 1: the empty halves of the egg shell in his hands.
• 3:15
Speaker 1: When he came to himself, he began to cry and
• 3:19
Speaker 1: shriek at the top of his lungs, stamping his feet
• 3:22
Speaker 1: on the ground and wailing. All the while.
• 3:25
Speaker 2: The talking cricket was right. If I had not run
• 3:28
Speaker 2: away from home, and if father was here now, I
• 3:30
Speaker 2: should not be dying of hunger. Oh, how horrible it
• 3:33
Speaker 2: is to be hungry. And as his stomach kept grumbling
• 3:37
Speaker 2: more than ever, and he had nothing to quiet it with,
• 3:40
Speaker 2: he thought of going out for a walk to the
• 3:42
Speaker 2: nearby village, in the hope of finding some charitable person
• 3:46
Speaker 2: who might give him a bit of bread. End of
• 3:50
  Speaker 2: Chapter five.
