- 0:07Howdy Star Gazers and welcome to this episode
- 0:10of Star Trails. Drew here and I'll be your guide
- 0:14to the night sky for the week starting July the
- 0:1713th through the 19th. This week we welcome darker
- 0:21skies, the return of Jupiter, and the first traces
- 0:24of the Perseid meteor shower. Later in the show,
- 0:28we turn the telescope around and examine how
- 0:31the earth looks from different areas of our solar
- 0:34system. Whether you're tuning in from the backyard,
- 0:37the balcony, or just your imagination, I'm glad
- 0:40you're here. So find a cozy spot, let your eyes
- 0:43adjust, and let's see what the sky holds for
- 0:46us this week. Let's start with the moon. We're
- 0:51coming off the full buck moon, which reached
- 0:54its peak on July the 10th. Hopefully, some of
- 0:57you managed to catch this big moon as it stayed
- 1:00fairly low to the horizon. Sadly, we had thunderstorms
- 1:04here, so it wasn't visible. The moon will spin
- 1:07the early part of this week in its waning gibbous
- 1:10phase, gradually shrinking in brightness each
- 1:13night. By Thursday, it reaches the last quarter
- 1:16phase, with about half the moon illuminated.
- 1:20Through a scope or binoculars, you'll see shadows
- 1:23stretching across the surface. highlighting craters
- 1:26and mountain ranges near the terminator line.
- 1:30By the end of the week, the moon will be entering
- 1:32a waning crescent phase. That means darker skies
- 1:36for tracking down faint galaxies, star clusters,
- 1:39and nebula. Now onto the planets. In the evening
- 1:44sky, you'll still be able to spot Mars glowing
- 1:47with its characteristic reddish hue. It's faint
- 1:51this time of the year, but still visible just
- 1:53after sunset, low in the western sky. Mercury
- 1:57is also hanging around after sunset, especially
- 2:00early in the week, but it's hugging the horizon,
- 2:04so you'll need a clear flat view and some luck
- 2:07with twilight timing. The best planetary viewing
- 2:11is for early risers. Venus remains dazzling in
- 2:15the morning sky. This week it's shining as bright
- 2:18as ever, almost like a headlight, and gliding
- 2:21near the famous Hyades and Pleiades star clusters
- 2:25in the constellation Taurus. This alignment creates
- 2:29a beautiful cosmic scene through binoculars or
- 2:32a small telescope. Saturn rises in the late evening
- 2:36and climbs higher into the southern sky before
- 2:39dawn. It's slowly moving closer to opposition
- 2:42later this summer, so the ringed planet is looking
- 2:46especially good. Look for its golden glow near
- 2:49the constellation Aquarius. Uranus is up too,
- 2:54hovering close to the Pleiades and Taurus, not
- 2:56far from Venus. Neptune is nearby, a little east
- 3:01of Saturn. You can catch both Saturn and Neptune
- 3:05about a degree apart this week, roughly the width
- 3:08of the full moon. As always, you'll need a good
- 3:11scope or binoculars to see Uranus and Neptune.
- 3:16And finally, Jupiter is slowly creeping back
- 3:18into the morning sky. It's faint right now, but
- 3:22you might catch it above the eastern horizon
- 3:24before sunrise by the weekend. Our constellations
- 3:28and deep sky treasures are much the same as previous
- 3:31weeks. Overhead, the Summer Triangle, made up
- 3:35of the bright stars Vega, Deneb, and Altair,
- 3:39is dominating the sky after dark. In Lyra, try
- 3:43spotting the famous Ring Nebula, also known as
- 3:46M57. You'll need a telescope to see its donut
- 3:50-like shape, but it's well worth the effort.
- 3:54Over in Cygnus, the Swan, check out the dumbbell
- 3:57nebula M27. This is a planetary nebula visible
- 4:02even through binoculars under dark skies. And
- 4:05if you've got a scope and a good Oxygen 3 filter,
- 4:09swing over to the Veil Nebula, a supernova remnant
- 4:13that stretches like wisps of smoke across the
- 4:16sky. Draco coils high in the north, and if you
- 4:20have a telescope, see if you can spot the tiny
- 4:23but fascinating Cat's Eye Nebula. Looking lower
- 4:27toward the southern horizon, Scorpius and Sagittarius
- 4:31are rich with targets. Scorpius hosts the bright
- 4:34red supergiant Antares, and Sagittarius, the
- 4:38teapot, is packed with nebula and star clouds
- 4:41along the heart of the Milky Way. In that area,
- 4:45check out the lagoon nebula M8, the wild duck
- 4:49cluster M11, and the butterfly cluster. The Milky
- 4:54Way's core is glowing this time of year, so take
- 4:57your time scanning through this star -rich region.
- 5:01And here's a heads up, the Perseid meteor shower
- 5:04begins this week. While it won't peak until mid
- 5:07-August, the first few meteors may begin to streak
- 5:10across the sky by July 17th. With the moon waning
- 5:15and rising later each night, early morning hours
- 5:18this week offer a growing window of dark skies.
- 5:21If you're between midnight and dawn, you just
- 5:24might catch an early Perseid or two. And if you're
- 5:28observing Saturn this week, keep an eye out for
- 5:31Titan, its largest moon. A Titan shadow transit
- 5:35is predicted for the early hours of July the
- 5:3718th. This transit is visible in backyard telescopes.
- 5:42I'll include a link in the show notes with additional
- 5:45information on this phenomenon, upcoming transits,
- 5:49and how to catch them. Each week we peer out
- 5:59into the cosmos describing the planets and constellations
- 6:02that grace our sky. We chart the orbits of worlds,
- 6:06track their brightness, and note how their appearance
- 6:09changes with the seasons. We talk about how bright
- 6:13Venus is and the red glow of Mars. We're always
- 6:17describing what these distant places look like
- 6:20from here on Earth. But what if we flip that
- 6:24around? What if instead we asked, what does Earth
- 6:28look like from other planets? How do we appear
- 6:31in someone else's sky? Let's take a little journey,
- 6:36not outward, but inward, and look at ourselves
- 6:39through distant eyes. To begin, we head over
- 6:43to our nearest neighbor, Venus. If you could
- 6:47stand on the surface of Venus and somehow peer
- 6:50through the thick sulfuric clouds, you'd see
- 6:53Earth as a brilliant bluish star, never far from
- 6:57the Sun. Just as Venus plays the role of Morning
- 7:01Star or Evening Star for us, we play that same
- 7:04role for them. Always close to the Sun, always
- 7:08confined to the twilight sky. At its brightest,
- 7:12Earth would gleam at magnitude negative 4 .1,
- 7:17nearly as bright as Venus looks from Earth. With
- 7:20a nice telescope on Venus, you'd see the Moon
- 7:23as a dot alongside Earth. From Venus, Earth would
- 7:28show slight phases, waxing and waning, shifting
- 7:32from gibbous to full and back again. You'd never
- 7:35see Earth as a crescent from Venus. It's too
- 7:38far out for that. Now, from Earth, we never see
- 7:42the outer planets in phases, so why would we
- 7:44see Earth in phases from Venus? It has to do
- 7:48with the Earth -Venus -Sun angle, which can become
- 7:52quite significant depending on where the planets
- 7:54are in their respective orbits. At greatest elongation,
- 7:58when Earth is at the maximum angle away from
- 8:01the Sun in the Venusian sky, Earth appears not
- 8:05directly opposite the Sun, but offset. So only
- 8:09part of its dayside is visible, rendering Earth
- 8:12as a bright gibbous disk. When it's directly
- 8:16behind the Sun at superior conjunction, Earth
- 8:19is fully illuminated and looks full from Venus.
- 8:23And Earth has been seen from even closer to the
- 8:26Sun. In 2005, NASA's MESSENGER probe en route
- 8:32to Mercury turned its camera outward and photographed
- 8:35Earth from 66 million miles away. We appeared
- 8:39as a bright star, outshining everything else
- 8:43in the field. Now let's journey out to Mars.
- 8:47From the red planet, Earth appears smaller and
- 8:50dimmer. To Martian eyes, Earth would be a bright
- 8:53speck, rarely far from the Sun. A telescopic
- 8:57view of Earth has been recorded from Mars, and
- 9:00it's a stunning image. In 2007, NASA's Mars Reconnaissance
- 9:06Orbiter turned its camera back toward us and
- 9:09captured the Earth and the Moon floating side
- 9:11by side in space, both in half -phase. You can
- 9:16actually see detail, not just light, but texture,
- 9:19weather systems, and the oceans. That's from
- 9:23127 million miles away. Now, let's go even farther
- 9:28out, to the orbit of Saturn. In 2013, the Cassini
- 9:33spacecraft took a moment from its study of the
- 9:36ringed giant to look homeward. There, just below
- 9:39Saturn's vast rings, was a tiny point of light.
- 9:43That point was us. The photo was titled The Day
- 9:47the Earth Smiled. For the first time, people
- 9:50on Earth were invited to look up and wave, while
- 9:53a camera out in the Saturnian system captured
- 9:56our image. From nearly a billion miles away,
- 10:00Earth was just a pixel, a flicker of sunlight
- 10:03reflecting off oceans, ice, clouds, and continents,
- 10:07all flattened into one shining speck. And that
- 10:11image echoes another. Back in 1990, the Voyager
- 10:161 spacecraft, now past Neptune, was instructed
- 10:19to turn around and take one final photo of its
- 10:23home planet. What it captured became one of the
- 10:26most iconic images in human history. We talked
- 10:30about that image back on episode 51 earlier this
- 10:34year. Of course, this is the famous pale blue
- 10:37dot image where Earth, less than a pixel in size,
- 10:41is caught in a ray of sunlight. It was Carl Sagan
- 10:45who gave the photo its name and its voice. Consider
- 10:49again that dot. That's here. That's home. That's
- 10:55us. On it, everyone you love, everyone you know,
- 11:01everyone you ever heard of. Every human being,
- 11:04whoever was, lived out their lives. That image
- 11:08wasn't just a picture. It was a mirror, a chance
- 11:11to see ourselves not as giants, but as fragile,
- 11:14temporary, and rare. From out there, we're not
- 11:18the center of the universe. We're not even especially
- 11:21noticeable. We're just another point of light
- 11:24among billions, brighter than some, fainter than
- 11:28others. It's a useful shift in perspective. Looking
- 11:32back at Earth reminds us that astronomy isn't
- 11:35only about the distant and the unfamiliar. Sometimes
- 11:39it's about remembering where we are in all of
- 11:42this, how we fit into the grand map of the solar
- 11:46system, and the quiet role we play in someone
