Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: International correspondence with insign Eye Insurance Peace of Mind for
- 0:04Speaker 1: New Zealand business. Vincent's with us now, Vincent, good morning.
- 0:08Speaker 1: We have a pope. I didn't quite catch as his
- 0:11Speaker 1: papal name. What are we calling him?
- 0:14Speaker 2: No, we haven't had it come out yet. On the wise,
- 0:16Speaker 2: I think it was Leoniin, but his name before life
- 0:21Speaker 2: as a pope now was Robert Prevost. He will become
- 0:25Speaker 2: the very first ever American pope. He is a surprise contender.
- 0:30Speaker 2: He was in all of the shortlists for the position,
- 0:33Speaker 2: but he was not seen at all as a front runner.
- 0:37Speaker 2: He is only sixty nine years old, which is quite
- 0:40Speaker 2: young for the position. He served as the head of
- 0:43Speaker 2: Lake Pope Parantis' main advisory group on picking new bishops
- 0:48Speaker 2: and have sort of broad name recognition because of that,
- 0:53Speaker 2: and especially with the sort of large group of papal
- 0:56Speaker 2: electors which have made up this conclave over the past
- 1:00Speaker 2: few days. He was born in Chicago to a family
- 1:02Speaker 2: with Italian, French and Spanish roots. He trained in the
- 1:06Speaker 2: Vatican with the late Pope Francis and spent most of
- 1:09Speaker 2: his career working in Peru. He actually has joint Peruvian citizenship.
- 1:15Speaker 2: He's described as the least American American and someone who
- 1:20Speaker 2: was seen as a bit of a reformer.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Potentially Leo the fourteenth is his papal name. We've just
- 1:27Speaker 1: been told Leo the fourteenth is the new pope. Interesting
- 1:30Speaker 1: that he's American. Trump will be happy with that. But
- 1:33Speaker 1: you mentioned he's a reformer in what way? I mean,
- 1:35Speaker 1: what direction? Do we know this will tag the Catholic churchen?
- 1:40Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean obviously Donald Trump a you know, truth
- 1:43Speaker 2: doubt a picture of himself using AI as pope, but
- 1:47Speaker 2: that was pretty unlikely. But yeah, I think he will
- 1:49Speaker 2: be pretty delighted at something else that he can trumpet
- 1:51Speaker 2: as an achievement under his watch, getting the first American pope.
- 1:55Speaker 2: There had traditionally, of course, been a reluctance to have
- 1:58Speaker 2: an American pope, or indeed a pope from Russia. The
- 2:01Speaker 2: idea was that you didn't want to have a pope
- 2:04Speaker 2: from the superpower that those nations already played large enough
- 2:07Speaker 2: on the world stage, and of course China now as
- 2:09Speaker 2: well that you wouldn't want someone from there. But that
- 2:12Speaker 2: is what this conclave has decided. He's being described as
- 2:17Speaker 2: someone who is not a showboat. He's been described by
- 2:20Speaker 2: colleagues as being very calm, extremely intelligent, and very compassionate.
- 2:25Speaker 2: And it sounds like he is looking to be progressive
- 2:29Speaker 2: on many social issues. Some see him as a centrist,
- 2:33Speaker 2: but he's apparently, according to these reports coming out now,
- 2:36Speaker 2: as someone who a lot of Catholics would see, is
- 2:38Speaker 2: wanting to carry on the work that Pope Francis has
- 2:41Speaker 2: done over his time, which was sort of shifting the
- 2:44Speaker 2: church away from the sort of high church trapped in
- 2:47Speaker 2: very much sort of all Nate traditions. And you know,
- 2:51Speaker 2: we know that Pope Francis, for instance, wore simple robes,
- 2:54Speaker 2: wanted things lived very simply, wanted things that were sort
- 2:57Speaker 2: of reaching out from the church, being internal, wanting to
- 3:01Speaker 2: make sure they engage with the people that needed the
- 3:03Speaker 2: church most, the global poor, wanting to do more work
- 3:06Speaker 2: in the global South. And it sounds like this new
- 3:09Speaker 2: Pope is someone who wants to carry on that work
- 3:13Speaker 2: that Pope France has started.
- 3:15Speaker 1: If you're just joining us, we have a new pope,
- 3:17Speaker 1: the US Cardinal Robert Francis Privost has been revealed as
- 3:22Speaker 1: Pope Leo the fourteenth. Then we're talking to Vincent mcavini,
- 3:25Speaker 1: who's our UK europe correspondent. Also, we should touch on
- 3:29Speaker 1: this UK US trade deal which has been announced this
- 3:32Speaker 1: morning as well. And it's not a deal that gets
- 3:36Speaker 1: them back to, you know, a great position, but it's
- 3:38Speaker 1: a better position than yesterday, I suppose.
- 3:41Speaker 2: Yeah, it's not as good as we had this time
- 3:43Speaker 2: last year, for instance, but it's better than we had
- 3:46Speaker 2: over the past couple of weeks. And whilst the America
- 3:48Speaker 2: is calling it a trade deal, we here in the
- 3:51Speaker 2: UK are actually calling it just a tariff's deal because
- 3:55Speaker 2: it is not the sort of all around, all encompassing
- 3:57Speaker 2: trade deal that's Fraxiteers, for instance, have tried to claim
- 4:01Speaker 2: that the UK could get for the last decade or so.
- 4:04Speaker 2: This is a deal which sort of removes that extra
- 4:07Speaker 2: twenty five percent on steel, aluminium and cars that America
- 4:13Speaker 2: had imposed. We've got that down to just ten percent,
- 4:16Speaker 2: so still you know a little chunk there. But they
- 4:19Speaker 2: are the cars that the UK makes, and the UK
- 4:21Speaker 2: actually has a surprisingly large car industry. Now they are
- 4:24Speaker 2: the high end cars, so you're Bentley's just sort of
- 4:26Speaker 2: rolls Royces Aston Martins, the kind of customer base that
- 4:30Speaker 2: really having ten more percent on it won't really mean
- 4:33Speaker 2: too much for them, to be honest, but some of
- 4:36Speaker 2: those companies had for the time stopped actually exporting into
- 4:39Speaker 2: America and then for everything else the but that's just
- 4:45Speaker 2: only the first one hundred thousand vehicles. Only one hundred
- 4:49Speaker 2: and one thousand were exported last year, so it means
- 4:51Speaker 2: that we can't really grow the market in America much.
- 4:55Speaker 2: In return, the UK government says it's removing the tariff
- 4:58Speaker 2: on ethanol fe US goods and agrees sort of reciprocal
- 5:02Speaker 2: markets access for certain products, including beef, and that's going
- 5:05Speaker 2: to be quite controversial because the US uses things like
- 5:08Speaker 2: hormones and antibiotics which British farmers are not allowed to
- 5:12Speaker 2: use on their beef. Here, we have sort of much
- 5:14Speaker 2: higher standards when it comes to agricultural products, and so
- 5:17Speaker 2: there is a question mark over that. Now what that
- 5:19Speaker 2: means for our farming industry here, whether there might even
- 5:22Speaker 2: be a grassroots or of campaign to simply just not
- 5:25Speaker 2: buy American agriculture products in order to protect our farmers
- 5:29Speaker 2: and also because of that what's deemed a sort of
- 5:32Speaker 2: more chemical quality produce.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Really appreciate your time, Vincent Vincent Mecavinny UK Europe correspondent
- 5:39Speaker 1: just gone twenty five minutes after five. I'm just looking
- 5:42Speaker 1: at some live pictures from Vatican, the Vedican Balcony. The
- 5:46Speaker 1: new Pope, Leo the fourteenth has got tears and designs
- 5:49Speaker 1: is He's obviously been overwhelmed by the occasion. Forty thousand
- 5:53Speaker 1: Catholics in Saint Peter's Square Right now, we have a
- 5:56Speaker 1: new pope.
