- 0:32Morning Daz, morning Steve, morning Teddy boy Good morning sunshine How are
- 0:38we all on this fine Thursday morning?
- 0:40Doing really well I'm annoyed Oh no,
- 0:45Because Daz cut us off in our prime We were talking off air about all things
- 0:50historical, geographical, about Sunderland And you were enjoying it,
- 0:55you were drinking in the information from my fountain of knowledge,
- 0:59and I rudely interrupted you. It's the only time we get to catch up.
- 1:02We've got a short to do. A short to do. Fancy that.
- 1:07Apparently, that's why we're here. Well, I'm just learning, for those just tuning
- 1:11in, I'm just learning that Sunderland is obviously been owned by someone named
- 1:15Hilton, and they've gone around and just named everything Hilton something.
- 1:18So I'm now calling him Hilton Ted from now on because you've got Hilton Red
- 1:23House, Hilton Castle Estate, Hilton Lane Estate. State.
- 1:28It's now Hilton Ted. So we were just doing it.
- 1:31You'll realise why in a bit later. But what's going on, everybody?
- 1:34Good morning. Happy Thursday.
- 1:36Welcome to the North East Football Brekkie Show, where we talk everything but
- 1:40football sometimes, especially when Middlesbrough have a bad loss.
- 1:43But we've got to talk about today for your Thursday morning.
- 1:47Yeah, I said that real late, Aussie. Good night today.
- 1:50Liverpool v Chelsea is now the confirmed Carabao Cup final.
- 1:53Is that expected? Well done, Carabao Cup. You got the final that you wanted. Confirmed by the EFL.
- 1:59We've got the season for next season in the EFL confirmed.
- 2:02The dates, how many games are played and want to talk to the lads about that.
- 2:05Real Madrid as well have overtaken Manchester City to become the highest revenue
- 2:10generating football club in the world.
- 2:12So we're going to talk to the lads about money generated by these clubs.
- 2:16If there's going to be anyone else.
- 2:18UK billionaire Joe Lewis, whose family trust owns Tottenham Hotspur,
- 2:22has has pleaded guilty to insider trading in a U.S. court as well.
- 2:26We'll get some blowdown on that and what that might mean for Tottenham.
- 2:29VAR, baby, VAR. Four minutes past seven, VAR.
- 2:33Nottingham Forest have been informed by the referees' organisation that the
- 2:36video assistant referee...
- 2:37Did not have the power to rule out Brentford, a.k.a. Ivan Toney's disputed equaliser on Saturday.
- 2:43What a system, hey? We'll talk to the lads more about that.
- 2:46PSV have just lost their first game in their domestic competition after exactly one year.
- 2:52They went 40 games unbeaten. Want to talk to the lads about what an exciting league that must be.
- 2:57And then lastly as well, lads, the majority of the Nottingham Forest squad do
- 3:02not have pay cut clauses in their contracts in the event of relegation. Uh-oh.
- 3:07With that and a lot more coming up on the North East Brekkie Show for your Thursday morning.
- 3:12But as always, we start off with some club headlines to go around to each of
- 3:15the three clubs and find out what's making headlines for their club.
- 3:19Mind you, the Sunderland one will probably be long and a little bit boring.
- 3:23Smoggies and proud. Borough News.
- 3:25Music.
- 3:27Good morning, Borough fans. How are we, you beautiful humans of the North East?
- 3:33I hope you're fantastic safe and well and we're completely and utterly
- 3:36forgetting about the carabao car michael carrick continues
- 3:39to reiterate that middlesbrough won't make any panic signings at
- 3:42the end of the january transfer window i have already so far added luke ailing
- 3:46and finnaz to their squad and are braced for another aston villa push to sign
- 3:50morgan rogers before the window closes it's unknown at this stage whether rogers
- 3:54departure would prompt borough to look for a replacement with the zaz's arrival
- 3:58already leaving them well stocked in that forward slash higher midfield department.
- 4:02However, since signing Ayling's second week of the month, Borough's recruitment
- 4:05team have now been focused on trying to find a centre forward with Emmanuel,
- 4:09Latelath and Josh Coburn both having issues throughout the season with injuries.
- 4:13In what isn't a very active market in general, however, Borough have so far
- 4:17been frustrated in their search trying to find a striker, aren't we all?
- 4:21And Borough will also now have a couple of weeks to recover,
- 4:24just remembering that Birmingham tie this weekend has been postponed due to
- 4:28their advancement in the FA Cup.
- 4:29They will be back on the 4th of February against a certain team near Monk Wearmouth,
- 4:35south of Whitburn, near Hilton Redhouse.
- 4:40And just a reminder, we beat them 4-0 and it's in our own backyard.
- 4:43That's your morning headlines. Good morning.
- 4:46Magpies and Proud. Mag News. Morning, Newcastle fans.
- 4:51With the clock ticking in the transfer window, the gap in valuation between
- 4:54Newcastle and Bayern Munich over Kieran Trippier looks to be too wide after
- 4:58comments from the Bundesliga side's sporting director on Wednesday night to
- 5:03the effect that their interest in him is over.
- 5:05Yesterday brought a bid of £30m, which was rejected by Newcastle,
- 5:10and Bayern then announced that that was that.
- 5:13Meanwhile, Miguel Miron is understood to have told the club that he doesn't
- 5:17want to leave St James' Park this month.
- 5:19The midfielder has been linked with a move to Al-Shabaab with a total of £30m
- 5:23as the fee for the Paraguay skipper.
- 5:26But he is less than a year into a newly penned contract and loves life on Tyneside.
- 5:32It is believed that Almiron and his family are not open to a move this month.
- 5:37On the injury front, Newcastle striker Callum Wilson is likely to miss the Fulham
- 5:40match in the FA Cup but he will be ready for the trip to Aston Villa at the end of the month.
- 5:45While Joe Willock has been stepping up his recovery behind
- 5:48the scenes The Chronicle are reporting that he won't feature until
- 5:51at least February while Harvey Barnes is back
- 5:54on the grass and trying to overcome his recurring foot issue and on Tuesday
- 5:58Gambia played their third and final game of their African Cup of Nations group
- 6:03stage campaign and they lost 3-2 to Cameroon in the Ivory Coast Tuesday saw
- 6:08Gambia play their third and final game of the African Cup of Nations stage stage,
- 6:12and after a defeat to Senegal 3-0 and Guinea 1-0, the Scorpions needed victory
- 6:18to have any chance of securing third place in Group C and the possibility of
- 6:22qualifying for the knockout stage.
- 6:24With Newcastle's Yancouba Mente retaining his place in the side,
- 6:27things looked good for Gambier when they came from behind to lead 2-1 with five
- 6:31minutes left, with then Cameroon Levels going 3-2 ahead during time added on,
- 6:35a VAR decision then denying Gambier a goal after they thought they'd made it 3-3.
- 6:40Mente will now return to fire note to continue his lone spell,
- 6:45That's in your castle headlines on Thursday morning.
- 6:49Mackhams and Proud. Black Cats News.
- 6:55Morning, Sunderland fans. You may start breathing a sigh of relief as one of
- 6:59Jack Clark's most prominent interested parties have made alternative plans.
- 7:03Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has stated that negotiations are advancing
- 7:07fast for West Ham to bring Nordic's land winger Ibrahim Osman to London for
- 7:12a fee of around £15.3 million.
- 7:14He also adds that fresh round of talks are scheduled today and tomorrow in order
- 7:18for all parties to get the deal done. Hopefully that means Clarke is staying.
- 7:23Sunderland women's news now. An Aston Villa could face punishment for fielding
- 7:26an ineligible player in their Continental League Cup game against Sunderland last night.
- 7:31Noelle Moritz, who joined Villa from Arsenal in January, came off the bench
- 7:34in their 7-0 victory over Sunderland, which ensured Villa's progression to the
- 7:38quarter-finals as Group A winners. but Moritz had already played three times
- 7:42for Arsenal earlier in the competition.
- 7:44The FA are thought to be investigating however the FA rules say any club found
- 7:49to have played an ineligible player in a cup match or cup matches shall be in
- 7:52breach of these rules and the matter shall be referred to an independent tribunal for determination.
- 7:58And finally Manchester United's stance on Ahmad Diallo remains clear despite
- 8:02the breakdown of other United players loan moves during the January transfer window.
- 8:07Ahmad of course enjoyed a fruitful loan spell at Sunderland last season in the
- 8:10championship and helped propel the team to the playoffs.
- 8:12The Black Cats were keen for the player to return last summer but a knee injury complicated matters.
- 8:17The Black Cats were credited with an interest in the attack of this January
- 8:20after Ahmad's return to fitness however United plan to keep Ahmad this month
- 8:24after paying Italian side Atalanta a reported fee of 19 million pounds rising
- 8:28to 37 million pounds for the player in 2020.
- 8:32There are your short Sunderland headlines.
- 8:38From Wickham to Whitley Bay, Stoneygate to Shields, Doggie to Darlow Back Lane.
- 8:45Music.
- 8:58Sorry about that. I had a Hilton nap during those Sunderland headlines.
- 9:01I tell you, I just drifted off there. Hang on a second. Hang on a second. Right.
- 9:05Okay. In the week that we got thrashed, I think it's fair to say,
- 9:09at the Borough against Chelsea. Yes.
- 9:12Did Ted sneak out that Sunderland got beat 7-0 there in the same week? Ooh.
- 9:18Sunderland women's team were beaten 7-0 unfairly because our last football hit.
- 9:23Ah. So it was unfair. So that was okay. Ah. Ah. Broke the rules. Right, right.
- 9:29Break the rules. Break the rules. Hilton, by the way, lads, it was the Hilton
- 9:32family ride, just to educate you a little bit. Oh, really?
- 9:35There's a nice castle in Sunderland, Hilton Castle, which is a nice heritage
- 9:40site, and I've just had a thought.
- 9:41I've never been there for obvious reasons, never really looked around Sunderland,
- 9:45but I'll take it when I'm over.
- 9:47You'll have to, yeah, but it looks really nice. It's the kind of place I would go to.
- 9:50And the Hilton family had it until the mid-1700s when the last air,
- 9:56Well, Baron Hilton died without a male heir.
- 9:59So in 1746, the castle was passed on.
- 10:02So it's had a variety of owners since then. But yeah, the Hilton family were
- 10:05a very rich family back in the day.
- 10:08So that's probably why there's a lot of streets and things named after them
- 10:12and a lot of areas named after them. So there you go.
- 10:14But you can Google it to your heart's content today, right?
- 10:18Well, I didn't even realize that. That's interesting.
- 10:20I aren't part of something. If you think that's cool, wait till you hear about
- 10:24Penshaw Monument. If you ever come to the northeast, we're going to have such
- 10:27a trip out, mate. Honestly, it'd be brilliant. Yeah, I can't wait.
- 10:30I can't wait. I want to go to Rye Hope and just be like, hello, my citizens.
- 10:34Is it Rye Hope? That's what I'm calling it.
- 10:37Hello, I am the mayor of Rye Hope now. I own all of you. So is it Rye Hope?
- 10:43Anyone tuning in from Rye Hope?
- 10:47Rye Hope Engines Museum is where I produced all my engines.
- 10:52That's another one. This is geography on a Thursday morning,
- 10:56would you believe it? Just if you weren't having a sleep in,
- 10:58now you can, because we're talking geography.
- 10:59But I hope you're all fantastic, safe and well. It's good to have you boys with
- 11:03us, a full entourage today.
- 11:05No radio, Dad. He's having a sleep in, but we do prefer you sometime, Daz.
- 11:10It's all right. He was on fine form yesterday. He was on fine form yesterday.
- 11:15Well, our friend Daniil has been in touch this morning. Oh, Daniil.
- 11:19Pleased to get an early win with what the fact yesterday. Let the games begin today, he said.
- 11:26Yes. Well, I've got a certain game coming up in the next hour,
- 11:30but unfortunately it's going to be more on the pressuring, the pressure cooker,
- 11:33if you will, if of the two lads to my left and right, Steve and Ted,
- 11:37Daz will be refereeing this one.
- 11:39So stay tuned for that one. That's coming through in the next hour.
- 11:43But, lads, we've got a lot to talk about, so let's get into it.
- 11:46We've got to talk about last night's Liverpool v Chelsea Carabao Cup final now confirmed.
- 11:51Liverpool coming through against Fulham in a one-all draw, one of the most boring
- 11:55games I've seen in a long time.
- 11:56It was a pretty dire game. I'm not going to lie, but it has lined up,
- 12:00obviously, Chelsea-Liverpool final, which you would argue is probably the best
- 12:04outcome for Carabao Cup because now they get the most fans into the ground.
- 12:07The game will take take place on the 25th of February, so about a month from
- 12:12today, on a Sunday, it does seem, unless it could be changed.
- 12:17I'll start with you, Teddy boy, Liverpool-Chelsea, probably the most obvious
- 12:21outcome out of all of the teams in the Carabao Cup, maybe obviously a Man City
- 12:26or something like that, potentially, but I think it's good for tickets, right?
- 12:30Well, it's not. I mean, I watched the first half last night,
- 12:34and as soon as Liverpool scored, I thought, well, that's pretty Pretty much it.
- 12:37It was proved to be the case. I mean, there was a late rally from Fulham,
- 12:40but it wasn't enough ultimately.
- 12:41So scrolling through X, formerly known as Twitter, and our friend of the show,
- 12:45James Copley, Jimmy Coppers, as you like to call him. Jimmy?
- 12:49James actually nailed it and said basically that like, this top flight football
- 12:54now is just becoming a little bit boring and predictable, especially the cup games.
- 12:59Had Fulham getting through, I probably would have watched the final because
- 13:02you want to see, you know, you want to see how the underdog gets on, don't you?
- 13:05Same reason why I watched the Middlesbrough game as well.
- 13:09Well, it is, yeah. It's just become very predictable. It's like it's the same
- 13:13winners just about, I think it's had maybe four winners in the last decade.
- 13:19It's kind of like, yeah, it's just become a little bit stale.
- 13:22Maybe we need to have a look at these cup competitions and see if we can breathe new life into them.
- 13:27I don't know, you know, maybe play the Premier League teams from the first round
- 13:31and let the lower league teams join in at the third round and that,
- 13:35you know, mix it up a little bit, make it a bit more interesting,
- 13:37and make it a bigger chance for the smaller clubs to actually get through and
- 13:41earn some money out of it, first of all.
- 13:44And then, you know, obviously, hopefully they get a bit of a shock result as well.
- 13:48Well, it's funny you should mention that, Teddy Boy, because actually from next
- 13:51season, they have confirmed that there will be no second leg in the semifinal for the Carabao Cup.
- 13:57So from next season, it'll just be the one game with whoever pulls their hat
- 14:03out of the ball out correctly.
- 14:05We'll get the home game and that's it. So it would just be a one-off game.
- 14:08So if we were here next season, we'd be in the final, Daz, because we won the game.
- 14:14We won the first game. That's a good point. So technically, we are in the Carabao Cup final. Yeah.
- 14:21Those doors are moving a bit closer. Technically, we are Carabao Cup finalists.
- 14:25That's what I'm hanging on to.
- 14:25Stevie Boy, Carabao Cup, Liverpool v. Chelsea.
- 14:31Obviously, Middlesbrough, you know, in theory, next year would have been in
- 14:34it. But is it something you're going to tune into? Something you can skip and have a sleep in?
- 14:39I mean, look, it'll be an interesting game. Chelsea have certainly upped their game.
- 14:44You know, they've suddenly started to find form. It's took them,
- 14:47you know, best part of two years and three managers to finally get,
- 14:51you know, a team playing as a team.
- 14:53And, you know, it started with that win against Newcastle, a penalty shootout.
- 14:57That could have ended the season.
- 14:58They could have been a downward slump after that, but they won the penalty shootout,
- 15:02and then they've gone on, regained some decent form in the league.
- 15:04They're climbing up the table and, you know, now they're in a cup final.
- 15:08It just shows you, you know, the fine margins, you know, at that level.
- 15:12Liverpool, yeah, I mean, this is the third time that Jurgen Klopp's taken them
- 15:15to the League Cup final. He's won behind Bob Paisley now, who got them there four times.
- 15:20It's a competition which, I guess, was on the verge of, you know,
- 15:25almost being irrelevant, but when Carabao have come on board,
- 15:29They seem to have caused a little resurgence in it. It's become exciting again. Crowds are up.
- 15:36Cheaper tickets for these cup games have attracted the crowds again,
- 15:39which some of the big clubs in the Premier League now are all season ticket grounds.
- 15:44It's difficult for people to get in. So cheap deals for kids and families,
- 15:48£10 for adults, £5 for kids at Newcastle for a lot of these games.
- 15:52It's brought people back to the competition. So it's regained its interest, I think.
- 15:57But I get where you're coming from with the fact that it's a Liverpool-Chelsea
- 16:00final. You know, last year was Newcastle against Manchester United.
- 16:04You know, Newcastle was a new team there. I mean, you know, the last time we'd
- 16:09been to the League Cup final was 76.
- 16:11So, you know, there is hope, I guess, in that competition that you can get,
- 16:16you know, you can get a team to the final that, you know, hasn't won anything.
- 16:20I mean, over the years, it's embarrassing the amount of what I would call,
- 16:24you know, lesser teams than, say, Newcastle, Sunderland or Middlesbrough have
- 16:30gone on to win the trophy.
- 16:32And, you know, we're all still scratching around, you know, not having won anything for years.
- 16:36So, you know, it is one that can create a shock, but clearly not this year.
- 16:41Liverpool, Chelsea is, you know, is the final.
- 16:44We've just got to accept it and hope we can change that next season.
- 16:47I'm a fan of the two legs in the semi
- 16:50I think that is the way that essentially it gives
- 16:54you a chance of having somebody else in a
- 16:57final I think it changes the direction of the game I think if
- 17:00you've just got a one-off semi-final I think that it too turns up on the day
- 17:04but the beauty of it is that you have that hope Middlesbrough had hope yesterday
- 17:09going into the game two days ago when they went into that game it was half-time
- 17:13they were winning 1-0 obviously we know now Now, you know, Chelsea turned up,
- 17:18Middlesbrough didn't and, you know, the rest is history.
- 17:20But they, you know, I think the two legs creates that excitement.
- 17:23Things can change, things can be turned around and, you know,
- 17:26you've got to play it a different way.
- 17:31And I'll be upset to see that change. I would like to see a bit more clarity
- 17:36in the Cups though. We're talking about the FA Cup now.
- 17:39And we'll be talking about that tomorrow, I guess, with Newcastle playing Fulham.
- 17:45But they're constantly changing the rules.
- 17:48And so there's a replay in the fourth round.
- 17:51So should Newcastle get a draw at Fulham on Saturday, it's back to St.
- 17:56James' Park, I think, on the 6th of February for a replay.
- 17:59But then in the fifth round, the replays are stopping.
- 18:02And then next year, there's no replays. The replays are being taken out of the
- 18:07game. and now we're returning back to extra time and penalties. And I hate penalties.
- 18:12I don't think penalties is the right way to decide anything.
- 18:16You know, I just think it's wrong that you play an entire, you know,
- 18:21you play through an entire cup run and it's decided, you know,
- 18:24you get to a semi-final, it's decided on penalties.
- 18:26I think that's horrendous. I'd rather have the golden goal, but I know some
- 18:30people prefer penalties. I prefer the golden goal.
- 18:32I just, I'm not a fan of it. But yeah, it's the expected final, sadly.
- 18:36You know West Ham you know West Ham give it a good go Borough give it a good
- 18:40go but you know Liverpool Chelsea it is and yeah I'll watch it I will watch
- 18:45it I think it'll be a decent game I do enjoy although I don't like Klopp's histrionics
- 18:49I do enjoy watching Liverpool play and if Chelsea keep up this run of form that
- 18:53they're on it could be a cracking final,
- 18:55Yeah I won't be watching it so move on.
- 18:58What was that what was that that Gary Neville said it was at Manchester City
- 19:04versus Liverpool and he was asked what he thought about the game and he said it's like trying to.
- 19:09Pick someone to punch your wife or something like that. You know,
- 19:12it was a bizarre statement.
- 19:15Trying to get banned from TV, is he? Yeah, no, no, it was a long time ago.
- 19:19You've been up and down with Joey Bott. Yeah.
- 19:21But his point was that I'm not interested in making that decision about who's
- 19:26going to win this game or even watch this game because, yeah, I've lost interest.
- 19:30If there'd have been, I think it was Ted who said it, if there'd have been an
- 19:33underdog in there, if Fulham had got through, I'd have been backing Fulham all
- 19:38the way. But yeah, I don't think I'm going to watch a Chelsea-Liverpool final now.
- 19:43It's crazy that we can consider Fulham an underdog as well, isn't it?
- 19:46That just shows you how the top four, top six, you know, that are always in
- 19:49there, at Fulham, you know, who are in the Premier League, are still considered
- 19:53an underdog because it's not Chelsea, Liverpool, Man City.
- 19:56Do you know what I mean? And that's the thing. And a few comments that came
- 19:59out from the Carabao Cup, the performers for Middlesbrough that I've seen,
- 20:02obviously, that I got tagged in and sent, you know, a million DMs.
- 20:06Thanks for all those, by the way, as if I wasn't hurting enough.
- 20:08Was that just the gap between the Premier League and Championship and the void
- 20:15is as big as it's ever been is what people are saying now.
- 20:19And they reckon that it's, you know, the gap between there.
- 20:22But I would argue as well the gap between that top six, maybe that top four
- 20:26even, is starting to open up as well.
- 20:28I mean, we're seeing it with the top three teams of the Championship coming
- 20:31up. I mean, that's obviously evident how big the gap is to jump up.
- 20:35It's two halves now, Ray.
- 20:36It's two halves now. I think I've said it this season.
- 20:40Once upon a time, there was a top, a middle and a bottom. There's no middle now.
- 20:43And that's the thing. In the Premier League, you've got, you know,
- 20:47you did have the big six. Almost like a big eight.
- 20:49It is, yeah. I mean, you know, anything down to anything. I am going to include
- 20:53Newcastle because of the season they had last season.
- 20:55And let's see where they are in May. Fair enough. You know, anyone down to 10th,
- 21:00which is where Newcastle find themselves at the moment, has got a chance of Europe at the moment.
- 21:04I mean, you could probably take it to 11th where Worlds are.
- 21:07I think Bournemouth will have a struggle to get to Europe this season.
- 21:09But Wolves could put a run together. They're doing really well with Gary O'Neill.
- 21:13And then I think anyone from Bournemouth down over to Sheffield United could go down.
- 21:18It's probably looking like that bottom three, though. Sheffield United, Burnley, Luton.
- 21:21I think the only thing that'll change that is if Everton lose points with another,
- 21:25you know, another points deduction for FFP. Or Forest.
- 21:28Or Forest, of course, yeah. They're involved.
- 21:30But, you know, you string a run together of wins and, you know,
- 21:34Bournemouth are right in it.
- 21:35So you're just doing, oh, and Fulham. We'll call them a big club But they're
- 21:38sitting in 13th place On 24 points So yeah There's no middle anymore There's
- 21:42no middle There's no middle table,
- 21:46Did you know, lads, I've got a fact for you. You know you like me, fact.
- 21:51I do? The Carabao Cup. The Carabao is actually a Philippine English term for
- 21:55the water buffalo, which is quite apt because we do speak a whole load of bull.
- 22:02Very good. Well done. Well done. Carry on.
- 22:07We're about six minutes away from the sports headlines, and it's a perfect time
- 22:10to get this in and out of the way because this is one of the stories that sadly
- 22:14we keep talking about out and one that we have to bring up,
- 22:16but it's just one that the lads and I, I think we're all in agreement and we've
- 22:22spoken about it a lot, but it's racism in football.
- 22:24We've seen it, unfortunately, again, over the weekend where we saw incidents
- 22:28at Udinese and Sheffield Wednesday again with one closer to our home with Sheffield
- 22:33Wednesday fans once again, proving that they need to pull their heads in.
- 22:38But the question that needs to be asked, guys, is FIFA president Giannano Infantino.
- 22:43What a pronunciation there by Rye. Well done. Thank you.
- 22:48He's saying that there should be an automatic forfeit of games for teams whose
- 22:52fans commit racist abuse.
- 22:54Teddy boy, if Sheffield Wednesday or any team in the championship,
- 22:58you see a fan committing racial abuse, how do you feel about that team being
- 23:03automatically forfeited and you win the game and game over?
- 23:07I think the way It's weird that you mention this, because I actually watched
- 23:11an article about this, watched a short video about this.
- 23:13I believe, and correct me if I'm
- 23:16wrong, anyone out there, that initially a complaint goes to the referee.
- 23:22The referee will then speak to some sort of official, and then there should
- 23:26be some form of announcement goes out.
- 23:28Now, once that announcement goes out, hopefully your fans have the common sense
- 23:34to police themselves and get rid of anybody who's creating what is just absolute scumbag behaviour.
- 23:41It's nothing but trouble. That's what they're trying to cause.
- 23:44So hopefully at that point it sorts itself
- 23:47out i believe the game then can
- 23:50be sort of uh suspended for a
- 23:53short amount of time until stewards etc
- 23:56go and investigate try and remove individuals and then
- 23:59the third pause for it apparently the referee
- 24:02has the power to postpone the game and basically call the
- 24:05game off so on that
- 24:08basis if the clubs are policing this right
- 24:11yes you're always was going to get idiots but to
- 24:14to highlight this i think maybe that's
- 24:17one of the only ways we can do it is actually suspend teams from
- 24:20competitions or or if it's a league game dock them the three points it's a very
- 24:25very severe way and it's it's it's not fair on the vast majority of fans who
- 24:30go there for the game for the love of the game and want to see their team do
- 24:33well they want to see their team play against local rivals all that kind of
- 24:36thing without causing any aggravation so it's It's very,
- 24:40very harsh on the 99.9% of fans who are there for the right reason.
- 24:45But it does, if you do start and suspend these games and invoke these penalties,
- 24:50I guess, then yeah, the fans are going to police themselves and they're going
- 24:54to ensure that their club is free of this kind of reputation.
- 24:59What do you reckon, Steve? I mean, obviously the FIFA president wants it,
- 25:03but could you see, we've always wanted harsher penalties, but could you see
- 25:08a team having to forfeit their match because their fan base has performed a racist gesture?
- 25:13Is that fair on the team and the players that are on the pitch?
- 25:16Yeah, I mean, look, it's, you know, something which has unfortunately been part
- 25:19of football for many, many years.
- 25:21I mean, I go back to the 80s when we used to walk into the Gallagher and there
- 25:24was, you know, skinheads with boots on selling the National Front magazine.
- 25:28And, you know, I remember the days where, you know, players would be running on to warm up at St.
- 25:33James's Park and they were getting, you know, monkey chants at them and bananas thrown at them.
- 25:37It's, you know, it's something which was part of 80s football and,
- 25:40you know, was rightly stamped out in the 90s. And now with cameras,
- 25:46with, you know, they've got signs up in the ground.
- 25:49They've got hotlines that you can text on the dates in James's Park to report any type of behaviour.
- 25:55You know, there's no excuse for not, you know, not being able to weed out individuals
- 25:59who think that it's a good idea to do that at a match.
- 26:02Do I think a club should be punished?
- 26:04Not if they do things properly. I think taking points off teams and punishing
- 26:09the team for the action of a minority at a football ground is wrong.
- 26:14I think as long as the club are taking out the correct...
- 26:17The correct precautions to stop these people getting into the ground.
- 26:20And if something happens at the ground, those people are treated in the correct way, i.e.
- 26:25Given a ban from the ground and that problem stamped out. I think that's punishment enough.
- 26:32You should be targeting the individuals, but I also think you should be educating
- 26:36the individuals as well.
- 26:37I don't think you can ever have too much education when you're dealing with this kind of issue.
- 26:43And the clubs are good at that. I certainly know my club is good at that, Newcastle United,
- 26:48they are, you know, they are very good at, you know, leading that kind of,
- 26:51you know, leading that kind of campaign and reminding people that,
- 26:55you know, that no way, shape or form is racism welcome at the ground.
- 26:59And yeah, I've seen, you know, I've seen various reports over the years of,
- 27:03you know, of people being ejected and moved.
- 27:05And we've seen it in recent times with, you know, other acts of,
- 27:08you know, you know, stupidity at grounds where people have used photographs
- 27:12of, you know, the late Bradley Lowry, you know, to mock Sunderland fans.
- 27:16And those people have been, you know, you know, highlighted straight away because
- 27:20of the CCTV within the ground and, you know, and prosecuted.
- 27:24So, yeah, long may that continue.
- 27:26Anyone who, you know, decides to act like that in a football ground should be
- 27:30punished. But should the clubs be punished? Should the team be punished?
- 27:33No, not if you're taking the correct precautions.
- 27:36It's disgusting. Get it out of our game, I tell you. And it's sad that it's
- 27:39Sheffield Wednesday again.
- 27:41But let's move on. Sports headlines time. We'll be back after this with more
- 27:45on the North East Brekkie show coming right up.
- 27:48Music.
- 27:48Together across the North East. The turn back hand and the red.
- 27:55Welcome back to the North East Brekkie Show. You're tuning in with Rye,
- 27:58the Borough fan, Ted, the Mackham, Steve, the Geordie, and Daz,
- 28:02the button pusher, but also a Borough fan.
- 28:04We are not talking Carabao Cup anymore, so if you are going to WhatsApp in the
- 28:08show, we'll give you the number, but if it's about Borough and the Carabao Cup,
- 28:11you will be banned. Daz, what's that number?
- 28:15It's 033-043-2002. We'd love to hear from you this morning. That's our WhatsApp number.
- 28:21You can drop us a message. You can drop us a voice note. click on the little
- 28:24microphone in the chat box and record yourself a little voice note if you want
- 28:27or you could even give us a call 033 043 2002,
- 28:32to contact the three leg ends this morning Steve, Ted and Ray on the North East Footy Brekkie,
- 28:39And please stop, if you are one of the fan people of calling up for Ted,
- 28:43he will not return your calls, all right? He said no more fan mail, all right?
- 28:46So please stop sending it to station. We're inundated.
- 28:49All right. Now I'm going to talk about… You speak for all of my 27 followers.
- 28:55We're going to talk about the EFL, lads, because this is kind of driving me a little bit insane.
- 29:00Obviously, it affects Barra and Sunderland, potentially hoping that we won't
- 29:04be, but we are going to be affected by this next season. and you would think
- 29:07in the 24-25 season has been announced the details of when it will kick off,
- 29:11how long it will go for, yada, yada, yada.
- 29:13The confirmed season date will be kicking off on the 10th to the 11th of August
- 29:172024 and the regular campaign will end on May the 3rd, 2025.
- 29:22There will be 46 rounds of league matches taking place across 33 weekends,
- 29:27nine midweeks and four bank holidays in the championship.
- 29:31Teddy boy, why does the championship play so... So why do we play so many games?
- 29:39I mean, 46 games over the space of 33 weekends, obviously including the nine
- 29:43midweek games and four bank holidays.
- 29:46Is there a sense that it is too much football?
- 29:49I mean, we're seeing the championship like just on the weekend,
- 29:52and I'm going to bring it up because it's not an excuse, but Chelsea have just come off a 10-day rest.
- 29:58Middlesbrough had three. We had the Carabao Cup semifinal, one of the biggest games of our careers.
- 30:06And Middlesbrough come off a three-day rest, nigh two-day rest.
- 30:09Chelsea with 10 because of the fixture hugeness. And I know that's not a correct
- 30:15word, but I'm going to use it. The hugeness. Enormity. Because I'm disgusted.
- 30:19Thank you. Thank you. Of 46 games in a regular season. Is it too much? It's too much.
- 30:25Wash your mouth out. Wash your mouth out, young man.
- 30:29There is no such thing as too much football. How dare you? How dare you from
- 30:36your sunny island start spouting such vile language like that?
- 30:42We want more football. I mean, bear in mind, it's 46 games over 33 weeks if
- 30:47you don't go on a really, really lucky run in the cup where you get no big teams
- 30:51until you get to the semifinals.
- 30:52You know? Hey, hey, hey. All games were that. What? What? What?
- 30:56Cut him off. Didn't mention anyone. Didn't mention anyone. Sue me.
- 31:00See you all in court. 7-0. 7-0. It was the women's team. Oh, don't do that.
- 31:08Don't do, oh, it was the women's team.
- 31:12Well, they're just newly formed, you know. We're still finding our feet.
- 31:16Give the lasses a chance, you know. But, well, Aston Villa didn't because they
- 31:20failed at illegal players. But there you go.
- 31:22Yeah. Yeah, for me, mate, I know it's tough on the players.
- 31:26And, you know, you look at the injuries that all three of the big North East
- 31:30teams have had this season.
- 31:31Fixture congestion is a bit of an issue. Of course it is.
- 31:35But at the same time, it's why we love it.
- 31:38It's not the injuries, obviously, but we love having those midweek games.
- 31:42We love having back-to-back matches over that festive period and things like that.
- 31:48It's why I love football. ball it's it's kind of like there's always
- 31:51you know another game in four days time or there's another game
- 31:54next weekend to put things right or you
- 31:57know to see if the run continues for me yes that we i think that the clubs need
- 32:03to be better in terms of the conditioning of players i think they are honed
- 32:08so well as athletes now that their bodies do break or under less stress than what players used to do.
- 32:16However, that's down to the clubs to get that right. You know,
- 32:19a couple of more pies down these lads wouldn't hurt, I think,
- 32:22you know, be able to take a bit of a knock.
- 32:24But yeah, I love it. I don't want to see the season become longer or less games or anything like that.
- 32:33It's great the way it is. It's exciting.
- 32:36It's championship football for me. And obviously, you know, we're having to
- 32:39get used to it these days.
- 32:41It's more exciting than Premier League football. just for the pure fact that
- 32:45there is more games there's such a mixture of them as well long may it continue in my opinion mate,
- 32:53Stevie boy, I feel like we're saying, we just spoke about just before the sports
- 32:57headlines about the gap, the void, if you will, between the championship and
- 33:01the EFL, sorry, EPL getting a little bit larger.
- 33:04Is it to do anything with the amount of games that the championship has to play
- 33:09compared to the Premier League?
- 33:10Premier League currently on a winter break where the championship is just roll on.
- 33:15Possibly. I mean, there is too many games for me in the championship.
- 33:18It's, I think when we were relegated last time, it's the one thing I dread because
- 33:22it it makes the division so hard to get out of. I mean, I guess there's two trains of thought.
- 33:26Too many games can equal too many injuries and can equal a team which should
- 33:33be up there and bouncing straight back, separates the men from the boys.
- 33:38But I think the flip side of it is, as a supporter, you get value for money.
- 33:43Your season ticket is getting you access to more games. And,
- 33:48you know, if you're winning games, which, of course, you know,
- 33:53the last couple of relegations, Newcastle have been very lucky,
- 33:56we bounced straight back.
- 33:58So it's almost like a holiday, if that makes sense for you as a fan.
- 34:03You've been in the Premier League, you've had a horrible stinking season where,
- 34:06you know, you've never won a game, you've dropped out of the league.
- 34:09But then you're in the championship You're suddenly going to these grounds That
- 34:14you haven't been to for years,
- 34:15You're reacquainting yourself with some of these places And it's a party atmosphere
- 34:21You're winning games every week So
- 34:23it becomes a novelty Should there be a reduction in games? I'm not so sure.
- 34:29Dazzy boy, what do you reckon, mate? 46 games in the EFL. Middlesbrough obviously
- 34:33currently enduring that with the injury list we've had.
- 34:37We have a Carabao Cup semi-final run where we saw the break Chelsea had compared to the break we had.
- 34:43Is there a sense that there is too much football for a championship team to
- 34:47then want to try and compete in these cups at the same time?
- 34:50Yeah, I think there is. I think there's a bit of that. I think there's a bit
- 34:54of an unfairness in comparison to the Premier League. But I also think,
- 34:58you know, from a Borough point of view, we don't have to worry about this for next season.
- 35:03It's only really Sunderland that will need to worry about it, isn't it, really?
- 35:06Because we will be in the Premier League. You are absolutely living in dreamland.
- 35:08You are living in dreamland.
- 35:12You know, so many times we've heard that the Premier League is the best league
- 35:18in the world, et cetera, yada, yada, yada.
- 35:20The most competitive league in the world, I think, is probably this Championship.
- 35:24You know, it is so wide open.
- 35:27But, you know, it's a lot of games. And I don't know, you know, I don't know.
- 35:34Is it a money thing? Is it, you know, why do we have so much cramped?
- 35:40You know, surely if the powers that be are looking into this,
- 35:45if the Premier League, you know, they're going for Europe, they're going for other cups, et cetera.
- 35:50So, yeah, let's give them a little bit of a break. Why have we not got a break in the championship?
- 35:54Because you're right teams in the championship are alright we got through the
- 36:02semi-finals of the Carabao Cup but there's the FA Cup as well that are going on,
- 36:10what's wrong with looking at a break for the
- 36:12other leagues as well below the Premier League to maybe
- 36:15help out a little bit with easing some
- 36:18of those injury concerns that Steve's talking
- 36:21about out to you know to to just
- 36:24try and make the the playing field a little bit you know
- 36:27leveler if you like it's never going to be level is it you know
- 36:30no league championship we know that but that's
- 36:33certainly something that the powers could be could look at the the efl
- 36:36you know whether they will or not you know whether they're just sitting and
- 36:40counting the coffers of the the tv money that's coming in or the you know i
- 36:46don't know but i certainly think a winter break in the championship next season
- 36:50when you look at that that schedule i don't think it would be a bad idea.
- 36:56Yeah, no, look, I'm not saying reduce games.
- 37:01Do you know what I mean? I'm probably away from that, right? But I'm all for a break.
- 37:06I mean, if the Premier League teams are getting a break, do you know what I mean?
- 37:09Especially when there's AFCON and Asian Cup like we have right now where we've
- 37:12got Riley McGree and Sammy Silveira away. Do you know what I mean?
- 37:17We would have had Senny Deng if he wasn't injured away as well.
- 37:20Do you know what I mean? You've got teams in the AFL getting better and better,
- 37:24are stronger and stronger, more financially secure.
- 37:26Now, if the Premier League are acknowledging that, yes, there is more international
- 37:30football than ever, that there is a need for a winter break,
- 37:33why hasn't the EFL thought of the same thing?
- 37:35Why can't the Championship, right, who are the league beneath the Premier League,
- 37:40agree that they probably need the same amount of respite, if or not a break as well?
- 37:45So I agree, 46 games, right? You can do that. I guess there's more teams in
- 37:49the, there's a lot more teams in the Championship.
- 37:51You know, there's a lot more travel, all that sort of stuff.
- 37:53I get it. And it's probably, you know, 46 rounds, you know, do it.
- 37:57I'm all for it. I love watching the bar weekend week out and watch them,
- 38:00you know, every day of the week if I had to.
- 38:02But I'm just saying that there needs to be consideration that we are seeing
- 38:06a gap between the Premier League and the championship getting even bigger.
- 38:10And maybe there is a sense that there should be a bit more rest between the
- 38:14championship teams just to keep it more even.
- 38:17Because you see exactly that in the Carabao Cup that, you know,
- 38:21The days rest between it.
- 38:22Do you know what I mean? If Sunderland had been up there playing the day after
- 38:25against Man City or something like that in a semifinal, you would have wanted
- 38:29more days off between that game.
- 38:30Do you know what I mean? You just would have. So it's just, and it just seems
- 38:33to be a bit of a, I don't know, a bit of an overrun, a bit of a side thought
- 38:37that the Prem Championship can just keep going on like that.
- 38:39And maybe we need to move it into the future, but I reckon the Premier League have got it wrong.
- 38:45And I've said this before on the show, I reckon the Premier League have got it wrong.
- 38:49Obviously, the Premier League's where the money's at and the rubber's going
- 38:52to get looked after better than what the EFL does.
- 38:55That's just par for the course, really.
- 38:57I've said it time and time again, you shouldn't take international breaks.
- 39:02And that's Premier League, EFL, doesn't matter which league it is,
- 39:05you shouldn't take breaks for international, whether it's tournaments,
- 39:09whether it's friendlies, anything like that.
- 39:11Crack on and use what you've got in your academy. That's what you've got an
- 39:15academy for. to produce more players.
- 39:17So blood them. Use them. Okay.
- 39:21For me, there's nothing more infuriating in football. That's a lie,
- 39:26because I'm a Sunderland fan. Everything infuriates me.
- 39:29I mean, I can get angry at a waterfall these days. You know,
- 39:32it's just half of the course being a Sunderland fan.
- 39:34But getting back to the point, one of the biggest infuriating things is the international breaks.
- 39:42And it's a bugger for us as well, because we're having out to talk about on this show.
- 39:47It is that much more difficult. But it's naff, isn't it?
- 39:50The international breaks, you're kind of sitting on a Saturday going,
- 39:53I've got absolutely zero time and patience to watch England play Lichtenstein
- 40:00in some sort of friendly that Gareth Southgate is going to bore the absolute
- 40:05corduroy trousers off us.
- 40:07It's just, yeah, it's naff. It's absolutely naff, so crack on.
- 40:11We've all got academies. We've all got youth systems. We've all got under-23s.
- 40:16We've got reserve games and all that kind of thing. Promote from within.
- 40:20Play the players that we've got there. It means their standard gets better.
- 40:24You're starting to give these people, the likes of Chrissie Rigg and our team,
- 40:28and I know Middlesbrough and Newcastle have got people as well who can step
- 40:31into that and make the step up. Let's give them an opportunity to do it.
- 40:35It'll never happen, of course, because you pay the money to see the top, top players.
- 40:40That's what sponsorship is
- 40:41all about. but in an ideal world just stop international breaks altogether,
- 40:47I mean we've been forced into using younger players because of the injury crisis
- 40:51so I would agree I mean look at the opportunity the injury list has given Lewis
- 40:57Miley he's had the opportunity I would agree I think when we don't stop,
- 41:03the Premier League for AFCON the African Cup of Nations takes a lot of players
- 41:08away from the Premier League Liverpool are having to play at the moment without Mo Salah.
- 41:12So don't stop the Premier League for the internationals
- 41:15I would agree I think that would make complete sense it
- 41:18would certainly be interesting to see how many players suddenly wanted to not
- 41:23play for England I think that's the worry that would be the concern but if the
- 41:29FA said if you're selected for England you've got to play unless you're injured
- 41:32then that would take that away from it it would change people's philosophy I
- 41:37think on things but yeah it's interesting,
- 41:39But anyway, we'll talk more, obviously, as the season goes on.
- 41:43Obviously, we're going to see a lot more sort of void talk, I guess you will,
- 41:46in terms of how big it is between the Premier League and the Championship and
- 41:50also, obviously, trying for those Championship teams to get through into these cup areas.
- 41:54It's just something for me that I think that needs to be taken into consideration
- 41:57as the Championship tries to close that gap. Maybe the League needs to step
- 42:01in and help it a little bit.
- 42:02Lads, richness, money, greed is the next topic I need to talk to you guys about.
- 42:08Something that Ted's well aware of.
- 42:10For those that don't know, Ted is a multimillionaire. You can call him if you
- 42:13need a donation or anything. Ted is your man.
- 42:17I'm hoping somebody does steal my identity.
- 42:22The richest clubs have been revealed by analysis by Deloitte.
- 42:27They do it every year. They generate and come up with the highest revenue generating
- 42:31football clubs in the whole entire world.
- 42:34Now, it's no shock to hear who the top five will. And I'm going to talk to the
- 42:38lads a little bit about if there'll be any other team, aka Newcastle, potentially in here.
- 42:42Getting around the FFP certainly will help.
- 42:45But we need to talk about Real Madrid, who have overtaken Man City to become
- 42:49the highest revenue generating football club this year.
- 42:52Real generated a record revenue of 831 million euros or 710 million pounds.
- 43:04831 million euros, 710 million pounds to top the Money League study from the 2023-23 season.
- 43:15So that is in the space of that season alone.
- 43:19831 million euros or 710 million pounds.
- 43:23My goodness me, that is a lot of money. Man City now fall into second as the
- 43:28second highest revenue generating club. you,
- 43:31Which, you know, financial fair play, hello. So, I mean, Teddy Boy,
- 43:36does it come as a shock that Real Madrid have ever taken Man City,
- 43:39considering everything going on?
- 43:41There's an old business expression, mate. Turn over for vanity, profit for sanity.
- 43:48Now, you can turn over 800 million pounds. Yeah, absolutely spectacular,
- 43:54that. Brilliant, well done.
- 43:56How much of that is actually profit? it because you
- 43:59obviously there's no getting away from this
- 44:01real madrid are like probably the biggest name in
- 44:04football there's no getting away from that as far
- 44:07as teams are concerned historically probably the most
- 44:10successful that there's ever been in europe an absolute
- 44:13juggernaut of a club but the playing
- 44:16catch up and the spanish league in in
- 44:20my opinion is behind where the premier league league is
- 44:22i would say it's maybe even behind the the
- 44:25bundesliga as well now there's only
- 44:28a couple of clubs in that division that are any worth whatsoever
- 44:31so it's no real surprise that you know spain's a big country people are going
- 44:37to go out and buy the shirts and all that sort of thing but given the size of
- 44:40the club given the size of their their fan base 800 million is not a massive
- 44:45surprise i just i just wonder how much of that is profit you know we'll talk
- 44:48about financial financial fair play,
- 44:50and things like that, and Man City up there with that kind of turnover,
- 44:54ultimately it means nothing without the bottom line.
- 44:57And I'm sorry to go all business talk. I don't know. It is boring and all that kind of thing.
- 45:01But whatever they're producing as turnover figures means nothing if they're
- 45:06not making a profit, mate.
- 45:07Yeah, I completely agree. Stevie Boy, just listen to some of these stats, mate.
- 45:132024 Money League clubs together together reported record revenues of 10.5 billion,
- 45:20which is an increase of 14% compared to the last season or the year before that's
- 45:25revenue of combined 9.2 billion, right?
- 45:29Real Madrid obviously returned to the first time since the 2017, 2018, right?
- 45:35With the record, that's their record ever of 831 million euros or 710 million pounds in one season.
- 45:42The average Average revenues generated by 15 of the highest revenue generating
- 45:46clubs stood at $4.3 million as well. Sorry, that's for women's clubs as well.
- 45:51So it's gone up. Women's clubs have gone up 61% in revenue.
- 45:56So this is women's football clubs in Europe have gone up 61% in revenue.
- 46:01So, I mean, you're seeing men's football increasing.
- 46:05Obviously, they're only going up by a billion. I say only by a billion like
- 46:09it's just pocket change, but it is for Ted. But women's football,
- 46:1361%, you know what I mean, is huge.
- 46:17Are we just crazily seeing how much football is worth to people now?
- 46:23Is it why we've got US investors coming in, seeing how much it's worth?
- 46:26Is it crazy to see Real Madrid taking over from Man City for you?
- 46:31You know, honestly, the football finance is something which leaves,
- 46:35I think, most of us, including us on this show, just scratching our heads because
- 46:39it just doesn't make sense how teams can run millions and in some cases billions
- 46:46worth of loss through the clubs,
- 46:49yet can still go out and pay ludicrous wages for people, you know,
- 46:54like Mbappe and Benzema.
- 46:56They pay a ludicrous fee and then they're paying a ludicrous wage, you know, each week.
- 47:01And I thought 20 years ago the bubble would burst.
- 47:05I thought Sky would, you know, Sky would, you know, eventually see,
- 47:09you know, the end of football as we know it. But, you know, we're still going on.
- 47:15We're still seeing huge television deals, huge advertising deals,
- 47:19and we're seeing ridiculous wages.
- 47:22Year after year, we're seeing the transfer record being broken.
- 47:25I mean, you know, I remember us all going, £15 million for Alan Shearer for
- 47:31a footballer. That's ridiculous.
- 47:33He looks like a bargain now, doesn't he, compared to some of the deals that
- 47:38have been done. £100 million plus for Harry Kane.
- 47:41Unbelievable. Yeah. Yes, the kid scores goals. Yes, he's very good at what he
- 47:45does. But is he worth £100 million? I mean...
- 47:49You know, it's crazy. And to see that league this morning and to see who's in
- 47:55that league is no surprise.
- 47:58You know, Real Madrid, you know, jockeying for position with,
- 48:01you know, the usual suspects, Barcelona, Manchester United.
- 48:04Those two have got debts coming out their ears. Barcelona are,
- 48:07you know, in one breath, we're seeing reports that Barcelona are skint.
- 48:13And then yet there they are as the, you know, the highest earners and the money
- 48:18going through the bank. So try and make sense of it, you know,
- 48:21try and dissect football finance.
- 48:24I know there are some people who do that. Kieran Maguire, I've mentioned him on here before.
- 48:28He's somebody who, you know, I've watched, you know, who tries to make sense
- 48:33of it and gives you it in layman terms so that, you know, we can understand
- 48:37a little bit more about it.
- 48:39But, you know, you've just got to point to the fact that Manchester City,
- 48:42you know, have got 115 allegations of FFP breaches and yet, you know,
- 48:48there's still nothing being done about it.
- 48:50So, you know, I just don't know what it all means.
- 48:52I don't understand it. I wouldn't pretend to understand it. And,
- 48:55you know, I just, you know, I still think at some point everything will have
- 49:01to be, everything will have to be accounted for.
- 49:04Everything will have to be laid out in, you know, and, you know,
- 49:08heads will roll, people will be accountable in some way, shape or form.
- 49:13But at the moment, I just don't understand it. I just don't understand how teams
- 49:17can say they're in debt and they're losing money and you know they can't do
- 49:21this and can't do that yet a league table like that comes out with some of the
- 49:24major you know the major clubs on there who are crying poverty I just I just
- 49:29don't understand it lads.
- 49:31What intrigues me, though, at this point is like, sorry, Rye, I couldn't in there.
- 49:35No, you're fine. You keep talking about Real Madrid here, and we're talking
- 49:39about a side where they've probably got the least recognized players that they've
- 49:44had maybe over the last 30 years.
- 49:47Apart from the left, you know, Bellingham and maybe one or two others,
- 49:51they're kind of, they're not that well-known in terms of like,
- 49:54you know, not like the days of the Galacticos where you could go 1-11,
- 49:57you could absolutely name that team that's going to turn out every single time they play.
- 50:01And it's just weird that like marketability of these players is kind of the
- 50:16lowest they've ever been.
- 50:19It's just a bit of an odd one that they're now turning over more money than
- 50:22they ever have done with arguably the least known squad.
- 50:27I mean, it's crazy, isn't it? It's crazy. I mean, this is the revenue, right?
- 50:31So if you want to check out the full list, you can just head to Deloitte.
- 50:33That's D-E-L-O-I-T-T-E.
- 50:36And they have the full list here. But just for the Premier League sake,
- 50:39right? We've got Newcastle, Steve's own.
- 50:41They were 20th last year. They're up to 17th with a generated revenue of 250 million pounds, right?
- 50:49So if you go on the financial fair pay, their revenue is 250.
- 50:53Now I know that comes into play, right? West Ham have slid from 15th in the
- 50:57season before that down to 18th with their generated income of £239 million.
- 51:03You know, you got Arsenal in 10th. They haven't moved. £463 million.
- 51:07Tottenham Hotspur are up to 8th with £549 million of revenue.
- 51:12This is just incredible amounts of money. And you can just see here how,
- 51:16I mean, we talk about the gap, lads.
- 51:18The revenue here is incredible. I mean, it's wild to see some of these numbers.
- 51:24Like Steve said, the money these guys are generating through revenue,
- 51:29yet crying poor. I mean, it's incredible.
- 51:32You've got, for instance, Napoli. Napoli literally, for a couple of seasons
- 51:36ago, were almost bankrupt.
- 51:38They're now 19th, 232 million pounds in terms of revenue generated.
- 51:44It's incredible to see. and just a shocking sort of thing for me, again, with the money.
- 51:49I know I've always spoken about money and my frustrations with financial fair
- 51:52play and people trying to get around the system and selling stadiums and all that sort of stuff.
- 51:57But the revenue at the moment is only going up.
- 52:00Fans and football is only on the up. If you talk about it as a marketable,
- 52:05look to see how I got that first time.
- 52:07If you talk about it as a selling business, business, then it is generating
- 52:12more and more income for those that invest each year.
- 52:16And we're talking billions of dollars. So no wonder these US markets,
- 52:20these Tom Brady's, these NFL players, all these people are starting to get involved
- 52:25with English football teams because it is generating so much wealth.
- 52:29Ryan Reynolds and obviously the Wrexham saga, we're seeing that Wrexham's probably
- 52:33gone up, even in League Two, they've probably generated a little bit more there as well.
- 52:38You know what I mean? because of, and we talk about how they come across and
- 52:42they're fans of football and all that sort of stuff.
- 52:45Are they really? I mean, is it, are they really? I mean, surely Tom Brady,
- 52:49you know, I remember, you know, Tom Brady, obviously NFL superstar growing up
- 52:53with the Birmingham flag on his door. You know what I mean? Not.
- 52:56Like it's, you know what I mean? It's a money generating business now to be investing in football.
- 53:03And it's a money, it's a thing to either do your tax write-offs,
- 53:07it's a thing to do, you know, you move your money around, whatever it may be,
- 53:11and they're doing it through the football clubs.
- 53:12And it's incredible to see some of this revenue that they're generating with
- 53:15fans more than ever invested.
- 53:17Now they're obviously moving into the online market now with ticket sales,
- 53:20watching it on their own fan club. We spoke about that with TV rights and stuff like that.
- 53:25It is the most wealthiest thing in the world at the moment is football.
- 53:29And it's incredible to see. Robbed the spot from the working class, mate.
- 53:31Yeah, they haven't robbed the spot from the working class.
- 53:35It's incredible just to see the money. Anyway, it is 8 a.m. Enough money talk.
- 53:38It's time for your news headlines.
- 53:40We'll be back after this to talk a little bit of fun and games.
- 53:43We've also got a certain quiz coming up where I'm going to put Steve and Ted
- 53:46in the hot seat with a little bit of geography.
- 53:49That's right, I said geography. Right after your news headlines.
- 53:56From Yarm to Yibbe, Harrington to Horsley Hill, Swalwell to Silverlink,
- 54:02the North East footy breakfast with Roy, Steve and Ted.
- 54:02Music.

- 54:26You'll have your say on anything to do with North East Football matters or anything
- 54:31that the chaps are discussing.
- 54:33Music.
- 54:52No one is to blame. On the North East Footy Breakfast, six minutes past eight.
- 54:56Good morning. A couple of messages that we've had in via the WhatsApp.
- 54:59Our friend Barry's been in touch. He said, Steve, all these stories about the
- 55:04cells leaving, is it on a free or is there a fee mentioned?
- 55:07He also says, mint at show, guys.
- 55:11And Daniil has been in touch as well. Daniil!
- 55:14The revenue in football may have increased, but we still have losses.
- 55:18Says my opinion is that one of the main motives for football investments is
- 55:23to maximise the tax benefits i.e. corporation tax by claiming losses via group relief.
- 55:29I'm sure there are many clubs that are part of a group That should do with the
- 55:32show with Daniil. He's intelligent.
- 55:36Thanks Barry by the way yes and I think there is a fee for Lascelles if he goes
- 55:40now but he'd be free in the summer so that's why there was talk of him going
- 55:44but at the moment it doesn't look like there's any exits from the club unless
- 55:47there's There's a shotgun deadline, Dave.
- 55:49I still think Bayern Munich will try again for Trippier. I think there's a bit
- 55:52of poker going on there, Barry, but we will wait and see.
- 55:56No worries. And he's acting the barra as well.
- 55:58Yes. For a par more.
- 56:04And you can get in touch with the North East 40 Brekkie at any time via our WhatsApp, 033 043 2002.
- 56:11We'd all love to hear from you this morning. We certainly would,
- 56:15because it saves us having to talk to Ted all the time. Do you know what I mean?
- 56:17So, Dexter, make sure you get into touch.
- 56:20I'm sorry, Ted. I know. I'm sorry.
- 56:23No, no, look. It's because I love you. You know what I mean?
- 56:26Okay. Okay. Is it one of those where you pull people's pigtails in the playground? Exactly. Exactly.
- 56:32It's my type of flirting. Okay. So, that's how it works. This is now uncomfortable.
- 56:40Let's get to some club headlines. Then we're coming back straight after that
- 56:43with one of the quizzes that I've come up with to stump these two lads with
- 56:47their geography skills.
- 56:49Mackhams and Proud. Black Cat's News.
- 56:54Good morning, Sunderland fans. You can start breathing a sigh of relief,
- 56:59hopefully, as one of Jack Clark's most prominent interested parties have made alternative plans.
- 57:04Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has stated that negotiations are advancing
- 57:09fast for West Ham to bring Nordic's land winger Ibrahim Osman to London for
- 57:14a fee of around £15.3 million.
- 57:16He also adds that a fresh round of talks is scheduled today and tomorrow in
- 57:20order for all parties to get a deal done.
- 57:23Sunderland women's news now and Aston Villa could face punishment for fielding
- 57:27an illegible player in their Continental League Cup game against Sunderland last night.
- 57:31Noelle Maritz, who joined Villa from Arsenal in January, came off the bench
- 57:35in a 7-0 victory over Sunderland, which
- 57:37ensured Villa's progression to the quarter-finals as Group A winners.
- 57:40But Maritz had already played three times for Arsenal earlier in the competition.
- 57:44The FA are investigating however the FA rules say any club found to have played
- 57:49an ineligible player for a cup match or cup matches shall be in breach of these
- 57:53rules and the matter shall be referred to an independent tribunal for determination.
- 57:59And finally, Manchester United's transfer stance on Ahmad Diallo remains clear,
- 58:03despite the breakdown of other United players' loan moves during the January transfer window.
- 58:08Ahmad, of course, enjoyed a fruitful loan spell at Sunderland last season,
- 58:12helping the team get to the playoffs.
- 58:14Black Cats were keen for the player to return last summer, but a knee injury complicated matters.
- 58:19We will credit the game with an interest in the attack this January,
- 58:22after Ahmad's return to fitness.
- 58:23However, United plan to keep the player this month after paying Italian side
- 58:27Atalanta under a reported fee of £19 million, rising to £37 million for the player in 2020.
- 58:34There are your Sunderland headlines.
- 58:36Magpies and Proud, Mag News. With the clock ticking in the transfer window,
- 58:42the gap in valuation between Newcastle and Bayern Munich over Kieran Trippier looks to be too wide.
- 58:46After comments from the Bundesliga side's sporting director on Wednesday night
- 58:50to the effect that their interest in him is over.
- 58:53Yesterday brought a bid of £13 million, pounds which was rejected by Newcastle
- 58:57United and Bayern then announced that their interest was over.
- 59:00Meanwhile, Miggy Almiron is understood to have told the club he doesn't want
- 59:03to leave St James's Park this month.
- 59:05The midfielder has been linked with a move to Al-Shabaab with the talk of a
- 59:09£30 million bid for the Paraguay skipper but the 29-year-old is less than a
- 59:13year into a newly penned contract and he loves life on Tyneside.
- 59:16It is believed that Almiron and his family are not open to a move this month.
- 59:21On the injury front, Newcastle striker Callum Wilson is likely the Miss Fulham
- 59:25trip in the FA Cup, but should be ready for the trip to Aston Villa at the end of January.
- 59:31While Joe Willock has been stepping up his recovery behind the scenes,
- 59:34the Chronicle are reporting that he won't feature until at least February,
- 59:38while Harvey Barnes is back on the grass and trying to overcome his recurring foot issue.
- 59:43Tuesday saw Yankuba Mendes Gambia play the third and final game of their Africa
- 59:47Cup of Nations group stage campaign, and they lost 3-2 to Cameroon in the Ivory
- 59:52Coast, meaning that they are heading home From Mintdale, now he turned to Firenode
- 59:56to continue his loan spell,
- 59:58and then return to St James' Park in the summer. That's in your castle headlines on Thursday morning.
- 1:00:04Smoggies and Proud, Borough News. Good morning, Borough fans.
- 1:00:05Music.
- 1:00:11How are you, beautiful humans? Hope you're all fantastic, safe and well.
- 1:00:15Michael Carrick continues to reiterate that Middlesbrough will not be making
- 1:00:18any panic signings at the end of this January transfer window.
- 1:00:22Borough have so far added Luke Ayling and Finisaz to their squad,
- 1:00:25but are braced for another Aston Villa push to sign Morgan Rodgers before the
- 1:00:28window closes next Thursday.
- 1:00:31It's unknown at this stage whether Rodgers' departure would prompt Borough to
- 1:00:33look for a replacement, but Azaz's arrival is already leaving us very well-stocked
- 1:00:38in that forward-slash-high-playing midfielder department.
- 1:00:41Since signing Ayling as well in the second week of this month,
- 1:00:45Borough's recruitment team has already focused on trying to find a centre-forward,
- 1:00:49with Emmanuel Latelath and Josh Coburn both having issues throughout the season with injuries.
- 1:00:53In what, though, has been described as not a very active market,
- 1:00:57Borough have been frustrated in their search for a striker.
- 1:01:00The stance from the club has been clear from the off, though,
- 1:01:03however. However, the more revivals this month would only be dependent if the
- 1:01:06right terms of play can be agreed upon.
- 1:01:09He must fit into this squad and he must not be replacing someone that might
- 1:01:13be coming back from injury.
- 1:01:14Tarek insists it would be absolutely someone if they fit.
- 1:01:19And Middlesbrough are also now going to welcome a welcome rest as their game
- 1:01:23with this weekend against Birmingham has been postponed. pwned.
- 1:01:26Birmingham's progression to the further into the FA Cup means that Middlesbrough
- 1:01:30will now return to action on the 4th of Feb against a team near Mug Wearmouth,
- 1:01:34south of Whitburn, near Hilton Redhouse,
- 1:01:37and close to their copy of the Riverside in Riverside Bowling,
- 1:01:40and also just to the west of Cox Green.
- 1:01:43We beat them at their ground, 4-0, for Welcome to the Riverside.
- 1:01:484th of February, that's Shibara Headlines.
- 1:01:54From Wickham to Whitley Bay, Stoneygate to Shields, Doggie to Darlow Back Lane.
- 1:02:01Music.
- 1:02:15Welcome back to the North East Brekkie Show. What headlines they were.
- 1:02:18Two geographical references I got there, Des.
- 1:02:20I'm very, very impressed, actually, mate. Thank you. I'm very impressed.
- 1:02:23Thank you. Thank you. Look at me doing my research.
- 1:02:25My friend Jack, not yours, Ted. My friend Jack said, morning,
- 1:02:29lads. A great show, as always.
- 1:02:32But I think there's something up with Ted's mic. It sounded like he just said that they lost 7-0. Oh!
- 1:02:41Oh! A little bit of poking in there. At least we have the dignity to do it in
- 1:02:45private and not from the conference.
- 1:02:48Okay. Okay. All right. Well, now I'm going to quiz them, lads,
- 1:02:51because don't you worry, I'm going to put them in the hot seat.
- 1:02:53It's time for Ry's made-up quiz, and it's all to do with geography.
- 1:02:57This morning I'm going to put Stevie Boy and Teddy Boy in the hot seat.
- 1:03:01I'm going to list off ten players here, right, ten players, and the lads are
- 1:03:06going to have to tell me what country they are from.
- 1:03:10Okay? I've already submitted my answers.
- 1:03:13All right. Steve has already given up. Okay. Ten players.
- 1:03:17And they're not to be yelled out. What I'll do is I'll say the player and then
- 1:03:20you lads write them down and then you need to send your answers into Daz,
- 1:03:23much like we did the other week. Daz has got the answers in front of him.
- 1:03:26And then later on, Daz will reveal who got the best ten.
- 1:03:31So I'll give you a second just to get a pen and paper or your WhatsApp open.
- 1:03:34You will need to send your answers into Daz. You can play along at home as well.
- 1:03:38You all right? You can play along at home as well. and if you want to,
- 1:03:41the WhatsApp number, Daz, for them to get in touch so they can play along?
- 1:03:44It's 03300432002.
- 1:03:47Yeah, just drop us a WhatsApp with your answers as well.
- 1:03:50There you go. So I'm going to give you 10 footballers, right,
- 1:03:53from around the world you need to name and tell me what country they are from.
- 1:03:57Now, not only does this help me learn where they're from, but it also helps
- 1:04:01me with pronunciation of certain names.
- 1:04:03That's why I'm doing it, okay, because it helps me to help you.
- 1:04:05Help me to help you, okay? Okay, right.
- 1:04:07Are you ready, Steve, in the red corner? Yeah.
- 1:04:12Are you ready, Ted, in the blue corner? I don't want to be in the blue corner.
- 1:04:17I want to be in the red corner.
- 1:04:18No. It's going to be like that. Okay, swap ends.
- 1:04:22Are you ready in the black and
- 1:04:23white corner, Steve? Yeah, I've already submitted my answers, but yeah.
- 1:04:27Ted, are you ready in the cockscreen corner? Yes, I am. Okay.
- 1:04:33Are you ready? I'm ready. Here we go. Okay. Here we go. We've got you some music
- 1:04:38as well. Here we go. Here we go.
- 1:04:39Music.
- 1:04:44Listen to it. It's Rise Geography. No, that's not going to work.
- 1:04:48Right, the first player.
- 1:04:51James Rodriguez.
- 1:04:54James Rodriguez. You need to tell me what country is James Rodriguez from.
- 1:05:02Okay. Number two, lads. Robbie Keane.
- 1:05:07Music.
- 1:05:17Didier Drogba. Didier Drogba is number three.
- 1:05:27Number four.
- 1:05:30Sadio Mane. Mane. Mane. Mane. I got it right. See, this is helping me. Sadio Mane.
- 1:05:36What country is Sadio Mane from? Number four.
- 1:05:43Number five. Gillette, a.k.a. George Best. The best the man can get.
- 1:05:48George Best in number five. What country is George Best from?
- 1:05:54Number six.
- 1:05:57Arturo Vidal. Arturo Vidal.
- 1:06:03What country is Vidal from? Number six. Number seven.
- 1:06:10Samuel Eto'o. One of the greatest strikers I've seen. Samuel Eto'o. What country is he from?
- 1:06:19Number eight. Number eight. Georgios Karagounis.
- 1:06:28Georgios Karagounis. Oh, right. I am so proud of you this morning. Number eight.
- 1:06:34Is it? Is it? Yeah. Karagounis, mate.
- 1:06:37Number nine. Kenny Dalglish. Number nine. Kenny Dalglish. I feel like I'm a bingo. 29.
- 1:06:47And number 10, Havel Nedved.
- 1:06:53Havel Nedved. Right. You need to have told me, if you've just tuned in,
- 1:06:59what country those 10 players represent.
- 1:07:02Where are they from? All right. In that order as well, one through to 10.
- 1:07:07I'm not going to go through them again because I honestly did struggle on a couple.
- 1:07:10Okay. But they are your top 10. I reckon Stevie's actually was a bit worried,
- 1:07:15but I reckon he's nailed it.
- 1:07:17I reckon Stevie's that sneaky. I don't want to play, but then he gets A grade.
- 1:07:20Do you know what I mean? Like, you know, he's like, I don't want to run the
- 1:07:23100 metres, and then he gets first place and beats, you know, all the other runners.
- 1:07:27All right. So that is your quiz for this morning. It's a geography quiz,
- 1:07:30all right, because we were learning Sunderland places, and that is your number
- 1:07:351 through 10. Players, name the country.
- 1:07:38Text them in on the WhatsApp number, Steve and Ted, but also playing at home,
- 1:07:42if you want to, you can text in, to the show on 033 0 4 3 2002 if you've got
- 1:07:48your answers we'd love to hear from you 033 0 4 3,
- 1:07:522002 so i've got both sets of answers now just give me just give me a sec i'll
- 1:07:56mark them yeah you could you couldn't please mark them please mark them see
- 1:08:00how i think you'll find mine's easy to mark did you struggle on any of them
- 1:08:06ted no no to be honest i was actually going to show off on one because I was going to give the,
- 1:08:11official French name to one of the countries but I thought no just in case I
- 1:08:16messed up What about you Steve? You struggle on them?
- 1:08:22No I did really well,
- 1:08:25See, he told you. I don't want to play. And then he just nails it. This is this guy.
- 1:08:29Right. That's Wildaz is telling all the numbers to see who's the winner.
- 1:08:32I hope Steve just hides his enthusiasm.
- 1:08:35Constantly.
- 1:08:38Let's talk about UK billionaire. A bit of a crazy one, this story breaking in overnight.
- 1:08:42UK billionaire Joe Lewis, whose family trust owns Tottenham Hotspur,
- 1:08:46has pleaded guilty to insider trading in a U.S. court.
- 1:08:50Lewis, who is 86 years old, was accused of passing on information about his
- 1:08:54companies to his private pilots, friends, personal assistants, and romantic partners.
- 1:09:01Teddy boy, as a billionaire that's probably passed on a little bit too much,
- 1:09:07how do you feel about Joe Lewis here?
- 1:09:09Joe Lewis, obviously, he's obviously the family trust, owns Tottenham Hotspur
- 1:09:14Football Club, pleading guilty in the US as well to insider trading.
- 1:09:18I don't think it affects Tottenham too much, mate, But still, not the greatest look.
- 1:09:24No, I think he's finished in boxing now, to be honest.
- 1:09:32Well, I've Googled the wrong one.
- 1:09:40That's literally all you had to say on that one, but never mind.
- 1:09:44Look, insider trading is one
- 1:09:46of those big, big, it's probably one of the ultimate crimes in business.
- 1:09:51I mean, at 86 years old, you're kind of thinking, well, what are they going
- 1:09:55to do? They can't stick him.
- 1:09:56They can't exactly give him life in prison. I mean, they could give him a six-week
- 1:09:59sentence, and that could be life in prison at that age, couldn't it?
- 1:10:03It's silly, very, very silly. You would think somebody who's got to that age,
- 1:10:07amassing those sort of millions, obviously clearly a very, very smart businessman over the years.
- 1:10:13It's just daft, really. I don't think Tottenham have got anything to worry about.
- 1:10:17I don't think it affects them in any way whatsoever, like, really.
- 1:10:20But, yeah, just very surprising to see someone of that age, of that experience
- 1:10:26as a businessman doing something that's well-documented.
- 1:10:30It has been very easy to trace for the right authorities and just something
- 1:10:35so daft, really. But, yeah, it's a bit of an odd one, mate.
- 1:10:39Well, yes. Just giving you more information to the story.
- 1:10:43The more information to the story, US authorities have said that the fraud has
- 1:10:47netted millions of dollars of profit over a massive amount of time.
- 1:10:52Lewis founded, obviously, the investment firm Tavistock, which has ownership
- 1:10:56stakes in large array of property, sports, finance, energy, and life sciences,
- 1:11:00all which are linked. So that would include Tottenham, you would think.
- 1:11:04He was ranked 39th in the 2023 Sunday Times Rich List with an estimated worth
- 1:11:08worth of more than 5 billion pounds.
- 1:11:11He was arrested, obviously, July 2023, and he's just proven,
- 1:11:15he's just pleaded guilty overnight. Steve.
- 1:11:17Yeah. Another money-related question that seems to be dominating our show today,
- 1:11:22but Joe Lewis, not the boxer, the family trust owns Tottenham Hotspur.
- 1:11:27Pleading guilty years and years of insider trading, apparently. Yeah, I mean-
- 1:11:33Yeah, I mean, it doesn't shock us because, you know, like I said,
- 1:11:37with all of these Premier League clubs and, you know, I'm sure if you divulged,
- 1:11:43you know, what's going on behind the scenes,
- 1:11:46who does what, you know, and who finances this.
- 1:11:49And, you know, I think there'd be a few skeletons in most clubs' cupboards.
- 1:11:52But I think what probably shocks me is the bit of honesty.
- 1:11:55Clearly, the evidence is being laid out and there's no way out.
- 1:11:59And, you know, he's pleading guilty because, you know, if he doesn't,
- 1:12:03then maybe the punishment for the crime is going to be more severe.
- 1:12:06So one would imagine Mr.
- 1:12:08Louis is simply protecting, you know, what he has, his assets.
- 1:12:13And, you know, potentially, you know, hopefully, from his perspective,
- 1:12:18of reducing any particular sentence that's going to be given to them.
- 1:12:21I think that's it, really.
- 1:12:22I mean, these people don't hold their hands up and say, yeah,
- 1:12:25it was me, unless they've got to, do they?
- 1:12:27That's my reading of it. I think it's a strange scenario.
- 1:12:32Yeah, it is. Certainly for somebody who's got that reputation to suddenly,
- 1:12:38you know, essentially ruin your
- 1:12:41reputation, you know, by numerous acts of stupidity is a little strange.
- 1:12:47But yeah, I mean, we'll see what punishment he gets now.
- 1:12:51You know, will it be a case of, you know, a slap on the wrist or will it be more? Who knows?
- 1:12:55But yeah, it doesn't surprise me in the slightest that, you know,
- 1:12:59that this person has come forward and said this.
- 1:13:01And yeah, it's a strange one, but it won't affect Spurs.
- 1:13:05I think the early feelings when we heard this story break was,
- 1:13:09ooh, you know, could they be in trouble? Could there be points deduction?
- 1:13:13Could it be an issue that affects the football club? but no it's not going to
- 1:13:18by the looks of it it's not going to affect Tottenham it's a personal thing
- 1:13:21and maybe the club have said you know maybe the club have maybe you know maybe
- 1:13:25that's the situation where they've come out and said look you need to take this
- 1:13:28on the chin you need to hold your hands up and you need to say this just in case.
- 1:13:33You know, the Premier League as we know they are, you know, the forensically
- 1:13:37going through everything now because they want to be squeaky clean.
- 1:13:40Maybe there has been a force of hand from the club and Daniel Levy and said,
- 1:13:45look, you can't put any of this on our toes.
- 1:13:50You know, this is your responsibility. Make sure that everybody knows this is you and you alone.
- 1:13:54But it'll be interesting to see how it develops. I'll be interested to see what
- 1:13:57punishment he gets first and foremost.
- 1:13:59Yeah, not wrong, especially at the age of 80. See, Stassi, boy.
- 1:14:03Do you think part of the insider trading was like him saying that he doesn't
- 1:14:07think Spurs are going to win the league this season?
- 1:14:11Well, let me give you one instance, and I'll get Daz's thoughts on it because Daz is a rich man.
- 1:14:17Daz, following one of the instances that has been proven in court,
- 1:14:21this is obviously alleged at the moment as well, but he has pleaded guilty,
- 1:14:25is that Lewis allegedly wired his private pilots, Patrick O'Connor and Brian
- 1:14:28Moore, not Dave Roberts, surprisingly, in there, $500,000 each to buy stock
- 1:14:32in a company after tipping them off with confidential information.
- 1:14:36That was one of the pilots that came forward and said that he was given $500,000.
- 1:14:41And these people that he has done this with have made millions and millions
- 1:14:46of dollars on his insider trading, on telling him and obviously getting loans to put the money on.
- 1:14:53Yeah. I mean, I'm sure this sort of thing happens every single day in the business
- 1:14:58world, this sort of insider stuff.
- 1:15:00And, you know, I mean, for me, the fact that he's pleaded guilty to this almost
- 1:15:07makes me suggest that there's maybe a deal on the table.
- 1:15:11You know, you plead guilty and we'll make sure that this happens or that,
- 1:15:15you know, there won't be a custodial sentence or whatever. That's just what it feels like to me.
- 1:15:21I would be highly surprised if it does affect Tottenham on the larger scale.
- 1:15:29You would hope that it wouldn't in terms of that.
- 1:15:33But it's these sordid stories, isn't it, that we can do without around our clubs.
- 1:15:39And I'm saying our clubs in terms of the UK's Premier League.
- 1:15:44So, yeah, stories like this just leave a bit of taste and just remind us that,
- 1:15:50you know, that money is, and Steve says all the time, money is ruining this game.
- 1:15:56It is. Yeah. No. Yeah, it is. What's up, lads, and the group that we can't talk about?
- 1:16:01Oh, no. What's happened? Was it me and the whole not listening Dave Roberts?
- 1:16:06It's careful I'm listening.
- 1:16:08Oh, no. I'll give you some insider trading. The lineup can change.
- 1:16:15Oh, no. Well, it's been a great show.
- 1:16:19Thank you for tuning in and what was my first show you've had a great run right
- 1:16:21to be fair thank you lads for having me I appreciate each and every one of you
- 1:16:26I will be back on a different station no I'm kidding of course Dave loves me
- 1:16:30bam there's a replacement just before your sports headlines,
- 1:16:39Jazzy Boy have you got the results of a certain quiz I have I have got the results
- 1:16:44here is there a winner there is a winner There is a winner.
- 1:16:50Yes, absolutely. And it was a very, very close thing.
- 1:16:56So, in Rye's geography-type footballing quiz,
- 1:17:03we have, in second place...
- 1:17:07With nine points, it's Steve.
- 1:17:12So that means in first place with ten points, it's Ted.
- 1:17:17Get in! Come on! Hold on a minute, Daz. Oh, hang on. Hold on a minute,
- 1:17:22Daz. Stewart's Inquiry.
- 1:17:24Yeah, I'm just going to screenshot what I sent you, Daz. I'm going to screenshot.
- 1:17:28Unless you're going to be honest and read it out what I sent you. All right, okay then.
- 1:17:34Steve VAR Steve sent me VAR Okay yeah We've got VR here Let me just It's in
- 1:17:40the group lads Oh it's in the group There it is Yeah.
- 1:17:46So for number one Steve Sorry Passed Sorry Ted For number two He passed Number
- 1:17:51three He passed Number four He passed Number five He passed I must have misread them,
- 1:17:57Yeah But the winner is Ted Yeah well done Ted Teddy boy Boy,
- 1:18:01but on Ted, but on Teddy, boy.
- 1:18:04How many did Ted actually get right, though, just out of interest? All 10.
- 1:18:07Yeah, definitely. Oh, well done, lads. And he was, I mean, sometimes the word
- 1:18:11hadn't finished coming out of Rye's mouth, and Ted takes the answer.
- 1:18:15Really? So, yeah. Oh, yeah. He was red hot. Geography.
- 1:18:19I was going to go for Cote d'Ivoire for Diddy Get Drunk, but because that's
- 1:18:23the… I was proving I'm a man of my word because when Ted did the geography quiz,
- 1:18:28is I said if there's any more geography quizzes on this show, I won't do them right.
- 1:18:34Now, the fact that you're a part-timer on this probably means that you didn't hear me say that.
- 1:18:40I am not doing it. I am not doing geography.
- 1:18:44Yeah, well, maybe the new replacement for me, you'll have to bring it up with him.
- 1:18:51It's time for your sports and news headlines here at 8.30 a.m.
- 1:18:55On the Northeast Breakers Show. We'll be back right after this. Together.
- 1:18:59Music.
- 1:19:04It is the North East Footy Brekkie on DAB online and on your smart speakers
- 1:19:08right across the North East on the Cat, the Toon and the Red.
- 1:19:11Davy Ladd has been listening in to us, you know, this morning.
- 1:19:14He's supposed to be having a sleep in, but he's been secretly listening in.
- 1:19:19And he said, having heard this morning's quiz, due to his love of astronomy
- 1:19:23and aviation, Radio Dad will be revealing the out-of-the-world quiz very soon.
- 1:19:31Geography, Dave, I won't be doing it.
- 1:19:35Yeah, learn your lesson, Dave.
- 1:19:38Even if it's on this planet or off another planet, he won't be doing it,
- 1:19:42okay? Exactly. It's out of this world. I'm not doing it.
- 1:19:45I noticed on Sky Sports News this morning, I was just looking through the headlines
- 1:19:49there, and it's saying Arsenal transfer news.
- 1:19:51Marseille are keen on Tavares' loan.
- 1:19:55Apparently Marseille had a chat with him and said, you to me are everything.
- 1:19:59The sweetest song that I could sing, oh baby. Airbeam. Well,
- 1:20:03that looks like that one will go through.
- 1:20:05Well done. I'm here all week. Well done. Actually, I'm not. Well done.
- 1:20:09Can we just have a clap? I thought they were interested in, were they not interested
- 1:20:14in saying that Colombian? Because heaven was missing an angle, wasn't it?
- 1:20:17Oh, my God. Oh, what have I started? No, no, no, no, no, no.
- 1:20:22In real news, North East football fans, especially those concerned with Middlesbrough,
- 1:20:27Ryan Giles is back in the championship, can you believe it?
- 1:20:30Looking to sign a loan deal for the rest of the season. at Hull City.
- 1:20:33So Ryan Giles, I think it was a record-breaking move to Luton at the time.
- 1:20:38Luton was obviously breaking their record transfers for him.
- 1:20:41Hasn't worked out. He's now back in the championship on loan to Hull City for
- 1:20:45the rest of the season with a view to sign permanently as well.
- 1:20:47So interesting one there, Borough fans, just breaking through as well to see
- 1:20:51if we might come up against Ryan Giles later this season. He was great for us last season.
- 1:20:56Without a doubt, he had some great assists. He was.
- 1:21:00I'd take Angel now, though. So, my goodness. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:21:04And I think this is a real coup for Hull, who were obviously...
- 1:21:08We talked about it the other day, didn't we?
- 1:21:10I think somebody mentioned that if, you know, if Borough don't sign a striker,
- 1:21:14does that show their lack of ambition?
- 1:21:16Yeah, that's what they are. I think Hull are showing their ambition and,
- 1:21:20you know, they're going to make a big push for this playoff,
- 1:21:23I think, with the signings that they're making.
- 1:21:25Yeah, getting over Sandlin as well, which was, you know, an easy feat,
- 1:21:29I guess you could say, these days. Let's move on. VAR.
- 1:21:34VAR is back.
- 1:21:38VAR, it's time. I've left it to the last half hour of the show to bring up that
- 1:21:42one and famous three-letter word, VAR.
- 1:21:45It's back, lads. It's weird. It's ugly head.
- 1:21:48Nottingham Forest have been informed by the referees' organisation that the
- 1:21:52video assistant referee did
- 1:21:54not have the power to rule out Brentford's disputed equaliser on Saturday.
- 1:21:59So if you don't know what I'm talking about, on the weekend,
- 1:22:02Ivan Toney's return, which we discussed yesterday on the show,
- 1:22:04and we were all in agreement, so it was a bit weird to see Ivan Toney returning
- 1:22:08from a ban to get the captain's armband.
- 1:22:10And not only that, but during the game, he has equalized for Brentford by moving the ball to the right.
- 1:22:16And I'm not talking a minuscule amount.
- 1:22:19He's literally picked the ball up. He's also grabbed the Gillette shaving cream,
- 1:22:22scraped that on the ground as if it's going going to look like a new line and
- 1:22:25move the ball a good positional shift to the right. He then scored the free kick.
- 1:22:32Nottingham Forest were then sent to investigate. They asked the question and
- 1:22:36the answer was that VAR couldn't have intervened because it doesn't have the power to do that.
- 1:22:41Steve, why doesn't VAR have the power to overrule decisions on the pitch when
- 1:22:46it certainly overrules a lot more on the pitch?
- 1:22:49It's just the way that the rules have have been set up and and
- 1:22:52you know again it's a it's another
- 1:22:54head scratcher with VAR we're all left thinking you know
- 1:22:58that we you were going to be improving the game
- 1:23:01with this technology but it's just another ludicrous rule
- 1:23:04that that has been implemented from the
- 1:23:07very start and you know certain situations it's
- 1:23:10not all situations that it affects but it's a situation like
- 1:23:13that that affects and ultimately the referee is the man
- 1:23:16who still has the power you know to make decisions on on
- 1:23:18the pitch and if he doesn't flag that up as a as an issue
- 1:23:21if he doesn't if he doesn't see it and you
- 1:23:25know and clamp down on it then VAR can't
- 1:23:28say to the referee hold on a minute he's just
- 1:23:31moved the ball so you know it's as simple as that really it's
- 1:23:34it's it's you know it's the right
- 1:23:36thing because the referee should have control but then the referee
- 1:23:39you know the referee doesn't have ultimate control because if
- 1:23:42he misses something in play then you
- 1:23:47know they you know they can then pull it back and say hold on
- 1:23:50he was offside hold on that was a handball so yeah i
- 1:23:53mean really you know the referee should have picked up on it he should have
- 1:23:56you know he should have been you know he should have been on the ball shouldn't
- 1:24:00he should have he should have gone back once the ones once he's happy that the
- 1:24:03wall's gone the correct distance and once he's happy that you know he's ready
- 1:24:06to restart play he should have gone back to see where he had you know essentially
- 1:24:11potentially awarded the free kick.
- 1:24:13He would have noticed because, like we mentioned, it looked like party string
- 1:24:17that he picked up. It looked like he was using something along those lines.
- 1:24:21And as he picked it up, if you watch it back, it almost disintegrates.
- 1:24:27He manages to pick part of it and move it, but it was quite clearly the original
- 1:24:33line was still where the free kick was awarded.
- 1:24:35So had the referee gone back and looked at the positioning, he would have seen
- 1:24:39that the ball had been moved, so then he could have corrected it.
- 1:24:42And all he would have said was, you know, he wouldn't have, I don't think he
- 1:24:45would have booked Tony at all.
- 1:24:46I mean, you know, he would have just said, look, you know, we'll have the ball
- 1:24:49back where it was, please.
- 1:24:51But that's that, you know, and in real time, was that really going to be picked
- 1:24:56up whenever, whenever somebody, you know, whenever, whenever VAR,
- 1:25:00you know, the VAR officials you would imagine would be sitting watching that.
- 1:25:03And, you know, it's just natural for a striker to pick a ball up and get placement and do what he wants.
- 1:25:08But, you know, with further examination, you know, with hindsight,
- 1:25:12you watch it and he quite clearly gives himself an advantage.
- 1:25:15And, you know, you've got to blame the defenders as well.
- 1:25:19I mean, you know, one of the defenders saw exactly what was going on,
- 1:25:22you know, told the goalkeeper to change, you know, to change his wall or,
- 1:25:27you know, to watch his position. and he telegraphed what was going to happen and they didn't stop it.
- 1:25:33So it is what it is. It's not the most controversial thing I've seen this season
- 1:25:37as far as VAR or non-VAR is concerned, but it's done now and you've just got to move on.
- 1:25:43But I dare say when there's a free kick on the edge of the box,
- 1:25:46referees and linesmen will be looking a little bit more at Mr.
- 1:25:50Tony, making sure that he doesn't move the ball and I think the next attempt
- 1:25:53he will be clamped down on.
- 1:25:55Teddy boy, I think it's a bit silly that you've got a video assistant referee.
- 1:25:59The referee is actually in the name and he can't intervene.
- 1:26:02If he's picked something up that the referee hasn't seen that he can't get in
- 1:26:06the ear and say, look, mate, Ivan Turner's just moved the ball a bit.
- 1:26:09You might want to bring that back.
- 1:26:11Yeah, I mean, first of all, I have to take you to task, right?
- 1:26:14You described VR as a three-letter word. It's actually an acronym,
- 1:26:18but there you go. Oh, yeah, well, it's true. Grammar lesson aside.
- 1:26:21Thank you, thank you, thank you.
- 1:26:24Nice, well played, well played. No worries, no worries.
- 1:26:28Just friendly. Yeah, so VR, obviously, no authority to intervene on restarts.
- 1:26:33So, yeah, it's down to the referee on the pitch.
- 1:26:36I get what you're saying. video referee is there
- 1:26:39for a reason to pick up on things like that and
- 1:26:42there maybe could have been a word in the air but we've
- 1:26:45got to bear in mind that var is still very much in its infancy it's
- 1:26:49it's still developing all the time as far as we're finding out its limitations
- 1:26:53on an almost daily basis really so yeah not much you can do i mean look it's
- 1:26:59not like ivan tony's like moved at you know 10 foot closer to the goal and kind
- 1:27:05of given an absolute absolute daylight advantage,
- 1:27:07he's stole a yard. It happens all the time.
- 1:27:11How many times do we see free kicks taken anywhere around the park?
- 1:27:16Almost never in the exact spot that the incident has taken place.
- 1:27:20It's just part of the game. Players steal a yard. Whether it's given them so
- 1:27:25much of an advantage where it's given them an advantage in terms of scoring,
- 1:27:29he might have scored the free kick if he took it from exactly where it was supposed to be taken from.
- 1:27:34We don't know that all he's done is move the ball a little bit like Steve says,
- 1:27:38it's not worth a booking it's not even worth maybe it's a little bit of a word
- 1:27:43of knock it back a couple of inches mate that's where I've drawn the line,
- 1:27:48it's down to the referee for me to ensure the ball is in place and all is good
- 1:27:53and keep an eye out for things like that we know it happens,
- 1:27:56if we're going to be that stringent about the rule,
- 1:27:58then watch the player as the free kick's being taken take one last check before
- 1:28:03the free kick's even taken, whatever,
- 1:28:05but I don't think enough of an advantage was gained where that's resulted in
- 1:28:11the goal, because he could have quite easily stuck it away from where the free
- 1:28:15kick was originally spotted.
- 1:28:16So do you think, I guess, in another instance, if Ivan Toni had moved the ball
- 1:28:22forward, for instance, to bring it closer to the goal, then the VAR could have stepped in?
- 1:28:29I mean, is that technically... It's like how long's a piece of string, though, isn't it?
- 1:28:32Because if you're moving it forward two, three inches, then is that an advantage? Probably not.
- 1:28:39It's maybe just avoiding maybe a little divot in the turf.
- 1:28:44So moving it forward something like that, not really an advantage,
- 1:28:48isn't it, in the grand scheme of things?
- 1:28:49You're talking about a pitch that's like, you know, what, 110 metres long, whatever it is.
- 1:28:53In the grand scheme of things, it's not an advantage.
- 1:28:57But obviously if you're trying to steal you know a metre, two metres,
- 1:29:01something like that then yes, obviously it should be,
- 1:29:05intervened, you're never going to get it exactly on the blade of grass that
- 1:29:08it's pointed out in the first place are you
- 1:29:10and I would hate to think we get to that stage that we're being that petty about
- 1:29:14it, that we're having to stop
- 1:29:16you know, like in snooker to have a ball re-spotted and
- 1:29:20sort of look at the camera angles and then take even more time
- 1:29:23out of the action of the game to have have a free kick spotted exactly where
- 1:29:26it should be taken from because that that that just that
- 1:29:29just ruins the game even more does i mean
- 1:29:32obviously on this we see the shaving cream for instance being
- 1:29:35put where the ball needs to be kicked from and then obviously they space out
- 1:29:40and put it for the wall is there any point putting it where the ball needs to
- 1:29:44be kicked from if we can just move it around a little bit yeah it's it's all
- 1:29:48a bit of a farce for me and i think the fact that they've have come out and
- 1:29:52said, look, we can't do anything about this.
- 1:29:55Is highlighting it again when it didn't really need highlighting again?
- 1:29:59You know, the bloke has just come back from a ban for cheating,
- 1:30:04for doing something that he shouldn't have done.
- 1:30:05He goes straight back onto the pitch. They give him a glorious welcome back.
- 1:30:10They make him club captain.
- 1:30:11And one of the first things he does is...
- 1:30:15He cheats again and, you know, moves the ball, moves the shaving foam,
- 1:30:19scores a goal, runs away like he's a hero.
- 1:30:22I'm just, it just, again, a sour taste in your mouth.
- 1:30:26And, you know, I'm thinking of kids watching this thinking, oh,
- 1:30:31well, that's all right. He's got away with this, hasn't he? So that's all right then.
- 1:30:33We can all do this. Yep, we can all do this, everyone.
- 1:30:36You know, one of the things that talking to a dad who, I mean,
- 1:30:41my lads are now 19, coming up 20.
- 1:30:45And I went through the whole kids football with them playing for a local team
- 1:30:50and all that sort of stuff and one of the dads,
- 1:30:52I was chatting to a guy and he was saying that his kids are going through all
- 1:30:55that now they're 9 or 10 or what have you and going through that and one of
- 1:30:59the things that the kids are doing now is as they're coming off the pitch,
- 1:31:03at half time or what have you when they're talking to each other they're covering
- 1:31:07their mouths with their hands as they're talking to each other,
- 1:31:11like you see the footballers do on the telly I mean it's hilarious you know these kids are thinking,
- 1:31:19I'm watching them do this on the telly so this is what we need to do just in
- 1:31:24case anybody is asking you know have you got a baby bell at half time?
- 1:31:28No no I've got a fruit shoot, do you know what I mean?
- 1:31:31It's like, so kids are watching what these professional footballers are doing on the TV exactly.
- 1:31:39And you know I don't think we should be highlighting this anymore,
- 1:31:42I don't know why this is a story in that, by the way, we can't...
- 1:31:45It's Rice's fault. He did the headline. No, no, no, no, no, no.
- 1:31:48No, but why have they come out and said, we can't do anything about this?
- 1:31:51Why didn't they just leave it then? You know? Yeah, yeah.
- 1:31:56It's not news, is it? I mean, I...
- 1:31:58I do want to be like the players. We can't do anything. So I'm going to start
- 1:32:01talking to the radio through my head now. Can you guys still hear me?
- 1:32:04I'm talking through my head.
- 1:32:05Okay, so now nobody that potentially is tuning in, you know,
- 1:32:09maybe Radio Dad who wants to, you know, change the lineup.
- 1:32:12Now he can't see what I'm saying. See, and now we're safe. Okay, so now well done.
- 1:32:16How clever am I? But you're absolutely right, Daz. And it's the message it sends
- 1:32:20to the younger audience.
- 1:32:22They copy everything that the players want to do. They're heroes.
- 1:32:25What they do on and off the pitch, you know, It is exactly how these people
- 1:32:28want to live their lives. If
- 1:32:29they go and buy this new TV, then these guys want that TV sort of thing.
- 1:32:33So it is an interesting thing that it has even been brought up.
- 1:32:36Now, still on Nottingham Forest, lads, it's just been revealed as well last night.
- 1:32:40Something that's interesting to me is that the majority,
- 1:32:44now they haven't revealed how many of them, but obviously we know that Nottingham
- 1:32:48Forest are now struggling with FFP, so much struggling that they've been fined
- 1:32:51and they will have to face the truth serum very soon about what's going to happen there.
- 1:32:55But the majority of the Nottingham Forest squad has been revealed that they
- 1:33:00do not have any pay cut clauses in their contracts in the event of relegation.
- 1:33:05Therefore, if Nottingham Forest come through and have to be relegated due to
- 1:33:10the financial fair play,
- 1:33:11even if they've got points taken off them, whatever it may be,
- 1:33:14if they find themselves in the championship next season, then their 20,
- 1:33:1930-odd signings that they made for multi-million dollars are all going to be
- 1:33:24on the current wages they're on.
- 1:33:26Teddy boy, surely something has to be done where something like that happens
- 1:33:30when they drop to the championship?
- 1:33:32Yeah, I can't get my head around this because every club should have that written
- 1:33:38in every single contract.
- 1:33:40Because, I mean, at best, it's arrogant to presume that you're not going to get relegated.
- 1:33:45And if you do, I mean, that absolutely ruins the club.
- 1:33:49Without fail, that absolutely ruins the club.
- 1:33:54To take a wage bill down in the championship like that, all right,
- 1:33:58you're fine for one year maybe. You might, might get away with it.
- 1:34:02Let's face it, Forrest haven't got absolute world-beating superstars like some
- 1:34:06of the other Premier League teams have. So you might just squeak away with it,
- 1:34:11but that's assuming you are going to bounce straight back up.
- 1:34:15There is no guarantee of that in the championship.
- 1:34:18We've seen it over the years. Leicester, different beast this year,
- 1:34:22and Leicester looked very, very strong.
- 1:34:24They looked, of all intents and purposes, like they're going to go back up.
- 1:34:27But how many of those sides do we see in the championship, even in League 1,
- 1:34:33some even in League 2, who are former Premier League clubs, who can't get back
- 1:34:39out of that division, back into the Premier League?
- 1:34:41Taking that wage bill down into Year 2 in the championship, that is dangerous.
- 1:34:47And given the sanctions and everything that's, you know, the charges that Forrest
- 1:34:51are facing, the owners, they're almost, they're just sleepwalking the club into oblivion.
- 1:34:58It's absolutely astounding. I mean, I know I was upset at the time when we got
- 1:35:03relegated and Jermaine Defoe had a release clause in his contract.
- 1:35:08Now that's a different thing.
- 1:35:10So basically it was, if Sunderland got relegated, Jermaine Defoe was free to
- 1:35:14join another club. This is when we got relegated out of the Premier League.
- 1:35:17And fans were absolutely raging about that because that never should have existed.
- 1:35:22Our best chance of firing ourselves back up into the Premier League would have
- 1:35:27been holding on to somebody like Jermaine Defoe to fire the goals in to take us back.
- 1:35:31That wasn't allowed to happen. But what we always have done is put those relegation clauses in.
- 1:35:37I think it's anywhere between 15% and 25% maybe that they lose,
- 1:35:41possibly even more now, probably about a 40% cut. But that's got to be there.
- 1:35:46I mean, if those players don't keep you in the Premier League,
- 1:35:50they don't deserve to be paid Premier League wages, do they?
- 1:35:54It's just common sense. It's incredible, isn't it?
- 1:35:56That's incredible. I mean, Steve, their annual payroll, right?
- 1:36:00Their annual, this is annual, not their weekly, but their annual payroll is $74,652.
- 1:36:0974 million, sorry, yes, 74,652,000 is their annual payroll for a 1,435,615 weekly.
- 1:36:22That is their current payroll.
- 1:36:23Their average player is on 37,779 pounds per week for a yearly average player
- 1:36:32of around 2 million pounds.
- 1:36:34That dropping down to the championship, ludicrous, right?
- 1:36:39Yeah, it is. Not having those kind of fees.
- 1:36:42I'd like to know how many players would be, like if they do go down with their
- 1:36:46season, how many would be out of contract?
- 1:36:47But I mean, they've got so many players, haven't they? I mean,
- 1:36:49I haven't kept a close eye on Forrest's squad, but I mean, they did almost sign
- 1:36:55an entirely new team when they first got to the Premier League.
- 1:36:58I mean, it's paid dividends for them. They've stayed up and,
- 1:37:01you know, they've managed to retain their Premier League position.
- 1:37:05I mean, you know, unless they have, you know, points deducted,
- 1:37:09I'd still say the bottom three are the three that go, but I think Forrest could do it again this season.
- 1:37:14But yeah, it's Dyson with financial danger really doing something like that.
- 1:37:20And, you know, you'd have to have a huge fire sale.
- 1:37:22Players would want to go at the end of the season.
- 1:37:25And, you know, there's some players there that would be handy for Premier League
- 1:37:29teams and Championship teams.
- 1:37:31So they just have to have a big sale. But yeah, it does leave you scratching your head a little bit.
- 1:37:36I mean, those figures that you just mentioned, £37,000 is what their average player is on wage-wise.
- 1:37:43It's not particularly high wage for the Premier League. I can imagine that's
- 1:37:47a high wage for Nottingham Forest,
- 1:37:48having spent a lot of time in the Championship over recent seasons.
- 1:37:51But in the grand scheme of things, £37,000 a week for a player.
- 1:37:56That's a lower-end wage, you would have said.
- 1:37:58I mean, I think Newcastle's probably double that, that, you know,
- 1:38:02probably 60, 70 grand for most of the players that are established.
- 1:38:06But yeah, it's football suicide, isn't it?
- 1:38:10It's a daft thing to do, not have those kind of clauses in.
- 1:38:13And, you know, you would question who's writing the contract for us,
- 1:38:18certainly over, you know, over somebody who would, you know,
- 1:38:22make sure that they're looking after the club's best interests.
- 1:38:24It sounds almost like they're looking after the players' best interests there.
- 1:38:29Maybe that's what they've got to do to get people there. Yeah.
- 1:38:32It was 300 million on 43 players in three transfer windows.
- 1:38:37And Financial Fair plays like, ah, maybe.
- 1:38:42You talk about- No one got the Forrest the average. Yeah.
- 1:38:46Might give them a ring tomorrow morning. How's that sound? After me, morning coffee.
- 1:38:50This is the top five earning players at Forrest currently, and they're gross per week.
- 1:38:55So you've got Divock Origi, who is the top paid player per week.
- 1:38:58This is in pound. He's on 120,000 per week.
- 1:39:02Chris Wood is in second on 80,000. He is tied with Gibbs White,
- 1:39:06who's also on 80,000. Felipe is also on 80,000.
- 1:39:10Callum Hudson-Odoi, also on 80,000. And then Sangari and Aurea are both on 75,000 pounds per week.
- 1:39:19This is reported through Capology, which obviously reports every team's financial breakdown.
- 1:39:25So there you go. If some of those players drop down to the championship,
- 1:39:28you could be coming up against against a Divock Origi on 120,000 pounds per
- 1:39:32week, against Emmanuel Latelath and the likes, or, you know...
- 1:39:37You know, Mason Burstow, for instance, it's incredible.
- 1:39:42And Forrest, you know, are going to have to face the music very,
- 1:39:45very soon for their financial fair play breaches, which they were proven alongside Everton.
- 1:39:49But it could be a lot more to play out this season with financial fair play
- 1:39:52as well. I feel like I've been talking about money all this day, but I apologize.
- 1:39:57It was just, you know, I'll just do the headlines as they're revealed.
- 1:40:00That is your morning Northeast show done. We are going to pass it over to Daz.
- 1:40:04We're going to even give him time for music. Music.
- 1:40:06Daz, what is on your beautiful, beautiful morning show this morning?
- 1:40:09Well, we've got a chat degree this morning that's coming up.
- 1:40:12We're going to have a look and see what's on the newspaper front pages,
- 1:40:15get you up to date with the showbiz news, see what's on the telly tonight.
- 1:40:19And, of course, we have got the quiz that is sweeping the nation.
- 1:40:23It is named that thing. Yeah, it's like my geography one. Yeah.
- 1:40:25So, Daz, are you going to bring that one that you couldn't, that wasn't sold
- 1:40:29to you next week instead of this stupid geography thing? Yeah,
- 1:40:32we'll do that Tuesday. Tuesday.
- 1:40:33I'm back on Tuesday, so we'll do that on Tuesday.
- 1:40:36Great stuff, mate. On Tuesday I'm not here. I'm off. Are you here Thursday?
- 1:40:42Yes, I am. I'll keep it till Thursday. Keep it till Thursday, yeah?
- 1:40:46Is everyone else Taz time off? I'm having time off. Fair enough.
- 1:40:53Have a lovely, lovely Thursday, guys. Always a pleasure.
- 1:40:58Thank you, Taz, for sitting in the hot seat. Thank you for tuning in to the
- 1:41:01North East We'll be back tomorrow to look at the FA Cup.
- 1:41:11Music.
