Transcript
- 0:00Marisol: Yep.
- 0:02Tad Eggleston: Good morning, everybody! Welcome back to the Love & Rockets Book Club on 22 Panels. I'm joined by Maria Pena from
- 0:09Tad Eggleston: Malta still?
- 0:11Tad Eggleston: Malta. I just know that you're going to be traveling elsewhere soon, so I wanted to make certain… Malta still?
- 0:17Tad Eggleston: And Marisol is on Zoom with me, but actually, like, she's the person that's on most regularly that I probably could arrange to be in the same room to record with. You know, we're both in the Chicago suburbs.
- 0:31Tad Eggleston: I don't know if either of you, have been paying attention to,
- 0:38Tad Eggleston: my wife has taken over the 22 Panels Instagram, so we now have, like, a real Instagram presence and, like, graphics and stuff, and the graphics she made for Love and Rockets
- 0:50Tad Eggleston: Plugged us is recorded from three continents.
- 0:54Maria Pena: Yeah, great. Oh, wait a minute, what's the third continent?
- 0:58Tad Eggleston: Well, it depends on which continent you're on.
- 1:01Maria Pena: Oh, okay.
- 1:02Tad Eggleston: We're not recorded from 3 continents at any given
- 1:06Tad Eggleston: day, but throughout the book club…
- 1:11Maria Pena: We've been in, yeah, we've been in Australia, continent, now we're in New York.
- 1:15Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 1:16Tad Eggleston: The other thing I was gonna bring up, because I actually went through and numbered all of the… I've been cleaning up our, like, episode tags and whatnot. Do you want to guess how many book clubs we've had?
- 1:30Tad Eggleston: And Marisol, I think you've been around for, if not all of them, like, all but one or two that I did with Maria and not you.
- 1:39Tad Eggleston: when Johnny and Andy were still showing up more.
- 1:45Marisol: Yeah.
- 1:46Tad Eggleston: But.
- 1:47Maria Pena: How many?
- 1:48Tad Eggleston: Anybody want to guess how many we've had?
- 1:50Maria Pena: Oh, God.
- 1:52Maria Pena: I have no idea. Probably.
- 1:55Maria Pena: Six… Better.
- 2:00Marisol: Double digits? I don't know.
- 2:03Tad Eggleston: Well, of course it's double digits. We had 50… 50 issues of… Of…
- 2:08Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 2:09Tad Eggleston: The, the first Lovin' Rockets…
- 2:11Maria Pena: Yeah, so it must be a random.
- 2:13Marisol: That's fine.
- 2:13Maria Pena: 17.
- 2:16Tad Eggleston: We have had 70.
- 2:18Maria Pena: Exactly.
- 2:19Marisol: Thank God.
- 2:21Tad Eggleston: We've had 70…
- 2:24Marisol: I don't know if we'd hit…
- 2:25Tad Eggleston: pockets.
- 2:30Maria Pena: Only one recorded, er, one released out of order.
- 2:34Tad Eggleston: Because somehow, Issue 47.
- 2:38Tad Eggleston: had lingered around, and I realized that it wasn't there after we put up our first… our talk with Beto. Like, where's 47?
- 2:47Tad Eggleston: That was actually our.
- 2:48Marisol: 40.
- 2:48Tad Eggleston: 8.
- 2:49Marisol: Read.
- 2:50Tad Eggleston: recording.
- 2:52Marisol: True.
- 2:53Tad Eggleston: Because there was one issue that, for time constraints, we split into two.
- 2:57Tad Eggleston: I had completely forgotten that until I was going through.
- 3:00Tad Eggleston: But, yeah.
- 3:02Tad Eggleston: So yeah, this is our 71st meeting.
- 3:06Tad Eggleston: Of the Love & Rocket Sport Club.
- 3:08Tad Eggleston: Which is just, like, crazy cool to me.
- 3:11Tad Eggleston: We have a book club that's gotten together this morning.
- 3:14Maria Pena: your staying power.
- 3:16Tad Eggleston: That's right! And we jump into Love and Rockets.
- 3:22Marisol: Number 1.
- 3:24Tad Eggleston: Volume 2, I love this cover.
- 3:27Maria Pena: Yes, it's.
- 3:29Marisol: Gorgeous.
- 3:30Maria Pena: So back to… sold back to the original 11 rockets covering, but with All Maggie.
- 3:37Tad Eggleston: Yeah, only all men.
- 3:39Maria Pena: Yeah. Mechanics, Maggie.
- 3:41Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 3:43Maria Pena: Teenage Muggie, Maggie.
- 3:45Maria Pena: And all the others.
- 3:46Tad Eggleston: Wrestling manager Maggie.
- 3:48Tad Eggleston: Drunk man.
- 3:49Marisol: Yep.
- 3:50Maria Pena: Drunk Maggie. Long-haired Maggie.
- 3:52Maria Pena: Naked, in a.
- 3:54Tad Eggleston: Yeah, hiding her nudity, Maggie.
- 4:00Tad Eggleston: And actually, this starts off…
- 4:04Tad Eggleston: with my all-time favorite Maggie image.
- 4:09Maria Pena: That is gorgeous.
- 4:10Tad Eggleston: I just…
- 4:13Tad Eggleston: like, it's the epitome of Maggie, because, like, even as we go through this, she's not actually in one of her best spots, but Maggie, no matter… no matter what else is…
- 4:24Tad Eggleston: going on? Has that ability?
- 4:27Tad Eggleston: to… Steal moments for herself.
- 4:32Tad Eggleston: I have no idea what she's thinking about here, but, like, you know that she's just, like.
- 4:38Tad Eggleston: I'm closing my eyes and thinking of something that makes me smile, and then I'm gonna have to face the world again.
- 4:45Maria Pena: She's feeling the sun on her face.
- 4:47Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 4:48Maria Pena: Is that easy?
- 4:49Marisol: a moment.
- 4:50Maria Pena: Easy's home.
- 4:52Maria Pena: Is that EZ's house, or… or is it…
- 4:56Tad Eggleston: Might be.
- 4:58Tad Eggleston: But it might be Maggie's, too.
- 5:01Maria Pena: Yes.
- 5:01Tad Eggleston: It's actually probably Maggie's. I don't think she's moved into the apartment complex yet.
- 5:06Maria Pena: Yep.
- 5:09Maria Pena: And.
- 5:11Tad Eggleston: But yeah, that's… that's, that's… that's one of the… the…
- 5:15Tad Eggleston: defining features of Maggie to me, is that…
- 5:19Tad Eggleston: She's not always optimistic, she's not always happy.
- 5:25Tad Eggleston: But she's never incapable of moments of joy.
- 5:30Marisol: Right.
- 5:33Maria Pena: Yes, yes.
- 5:36Tad Eggleston: And that's… that's, like, a real thing. There are lots of people who, like, go through the shit Maggie goes through, and, like.
- 5:45Tad Eggleston: Can't find joy at all.
- 5:47Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 5:47Tad Eggleston: You know… I mean, very next page, like…
- 5:54Tad Eggleston: when she's having to call Julie Rhee, you know, she looks about as down as you can possibly be. Really? Yeah. Do I have to do this?
- 6:06Maria Pena: And she's… This is an option.
- 6:13Maria Pena: She's having a nap during the day, so I don't know whether she was in a very good.
- 6:19Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if this…
- 6:22Tad Eggleston: Well, and it could be between jobs. I mean, we haven't gotten a clear, clear…
- 6:29Tad Eggleston: picture of where Maggie is in her life. I mean, she's certainly, first thing, she's going to the bar to see Hopi.
- 6:38Maria Pena: He's drinking a little bit.
- 6:40Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 6:42Maria Pena: And they have a little, a little.
- 6:45Marisol: Little moment together in the bathroom.
- 6:48Maria Pena: Okay, in the bathroom, which is.
- 6:49Tad Eggleston: Yeah, until she says Julie Rhee.
- 6:52Maria Pena: Yes.
- 6:54Maria Pena: So, Julie Rhee wants Easy to appear in her TV show.
- 6:59Maria Pena: And I hope he's not happy about it. And
- 7:04Maria Pena: And then… so then Easy stays at Maggie's, and that… that was very strange, like…
- 7:12Tad Eggleston: It does not grow, but does… does have night screaming.
- 7:15Tad Eggleston: Yes. These are some great panels, too.
- 7:19Maria Pena: They fancy.
- 7:19Marisol: That's too bad, is that one.
- 7:21Tad Eggleston: I was just out at CXC,
- 7:26Tad Eggleston: Cartoon's Crossroads Columbus, and one of the exhibits at the Billy Ireland right now is called Motion Lines, and it's just all about, like, motion and comics, and I don't remember if there was any…
- 7:39Tad Eggleston: Jaime on the wall, but… but, like, this one would fit so perfectly. The screen…
- 7:44Marisol: Oh, yeah.
- 7:45Tad Eggleston: You just see Maggie speak.
- 7:48Marisol: With, like, the rocket. Just a launch into the air?
- 7:50Tad Eggleston: Right?
- 7:52Maria Pena: Yeah, launching off the panel into the ether, yeah, from the.
- 7:57Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 7:58Maria Pena: And it surprised me when I said, I was like, oh shit, what's going on?
- 8:02Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 8:04Marisol: Oh my god.
- 8:07Maria Pena: Oh…
- 8:08Tad Eggleston: The, the, the, the launch, the launch of the feet up is just…
- 8:13Maria Pena: Annie?
- 8:14Maria Pena: Yeah, and each…
- 8:15Tad Eggleston: For that matter, he's…
- 8:16Maria Pena: Goes through various, panels.
- 8:19Tad Eggleston: I don't bring up his lettering a lot.
- 8:22Tad Eggleston: And I probably should a little bit more, but, like, the way he does the screaming and the Maggie screaming over the screaming in these panels is just…
- 8:33Tad Eggleston: Brilliant.
- 8:34Maria Pena: Yes, pure comic book, you know. Right. The language of comic book, like, a real, mastery of it, yeah.
- 8:44Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 8:45Maria Pena: Even the slam there at the end, when she slams the door in between battles.
- 8:52Maria Pena: Great.
- 8:52Marisol: That's just… So funny, the pause and the scream, and then picking it back up again.
- 8:58Tad Eggleston: Right, right.
- 9:00Maria Pena: Yeah, yes, when…
- 9:02Tad Eggleston: Well, she needs to stop for breath.
- 9:05Marisol: Yep.
- 9:07Maria Pena: to stop, and easy stops, just for a moment.
- 9:12Marisol: starts again, and then Maggie flings back into some furniture.
- 9:17Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 9:18Maria Pena: No, I mean, this is, yeah, it's a, it's like a masterclass in, you know, how to convey stuff, sound, and… Yeah.
- 9:28Maria Pena: movement, sound, balloons, everything, all beautifully. And I love the way, Easy's, hair just blends into that, that shadow there.
- 9:41Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah.
- 9:42Maria Pena: Fantastic. That's great.
- 9:48Tad Eggleston: And then we've got the Julie Rhee show, which, oh my god…
- 9:52Maria Pena: What the hell was that? Like, they're all talking crap about… like, like, they're… like, friends…
- 9:59Maria Pena: just talking about crap, and they don't even look at EZ.
- 10:03Tad Eggleston: No, and, and the statistics?
- 10:08Maria Pena: Oh, yeah, with.
- 10:09Tad Eggleston: percentage of people in Encino wear sunglasses?
- 10:13Maria Pena: 42%, yeah.
- 10:14Tad Eggleston: Let's, let's have the bikini-clad woman walk across with a percentage.
- 10:20Maria Pena: What's… what's the… what's that girl's name?
- 10:23Tad Eggleston: That's, frogmouth? I forget. Frogmouth, yeah. Her real name.
- 10:28Maria Pena: Yeah, Violet? No.
- 10:29Marisol: Anyway…
- 10:30Tad Eggleston: Violence sounds right, actually.
- 10:32Maria Pena: V, it starts with a V. I don't know if it's Violet.
- 10:35Tad Eggleston: Vivian.
- 10:35Maria Pena: Vivian, that's right.
- 10:39Maria Pena: Vivian, yeah. Yeah, that was the weirdest… is that because at the time, it was the era of cable TV and.
- 10:49Tad Eggleston: I think so, I think it was the era of cable access, and there were definitely some, like… dumb…
- 10:58Maria Pena: shows.
- 11:00Tad Eggleston: That would have… that would have serious, like, local fandoms.
- 11:04Maria Pena: Yeah, I guess it's the equivalent of having a YouTube channel. Right.
- 11:10Tad Eggleston: Right, very similar.
- 11:13Maria Pena: Yeah, yeah.
- 11:16Maria Pena: Yeah, I never went through that.
- 11:18Tad Eggleston: And I just, I felt so bad for Maggie, who, like, was there only because…
- 11:24Maria Pena: Izzy had said, I'm not.
- 11:26Tad Eggleston: going without you, and then it turns out that Julie had seen her and was pissed as hell that she was there.
- 11:34Maria Pena: Yeah, it humiliates, or…
- 11:37Tad Eggleston: And impressed with the fact that, like, Izzy… Izzy's like, oh, I put you through that.
- 11:42Tad Eggleston: Because I don't know if that's something that I would have expected Izzy to…
- 11:47Maria Pena: No, that's right.
- 11:48Tad Eggleston: get upset about But maybe finally getting that book… I mean, Izzy's an interesting…
- 11:55Tad Eggleston: Character that we learn so much about through snapshots.
- 12:01Tad Eggleston: You know, every once in a while, she gets her own story, flies on the ceiling, or… you know. So we know… we know about…
- 12:11Tad Eggleston: her going to Mexico, her failed marriage and kid involved in that, and yeah, the abortion, and…
- 12:22Tad Eggleston: We know Happy Izzy, and we know Crazy Izzy, and…
- 12:27Tad Eggleston: You know, we know that she's kind of a writer all through it.
- 12:31Tad Eggleston: Like… I… I would love to get…
- 12:37Tad Eggleston: more is E. And I know we get some more over…
- 12:43Tad Eggleston: coming issues in years, but she hasn't really been a focus lately, which is not terrible.
- 12:50Marisol: Oh, because…
- 12:51Tad Eggleston: He's had cool focuses in.
- 12:53Marisol: New books, too.
- 12:55Tad Eggleston: A couple of characters that we haven't met yet, who have become major, major characters.
- 13:02Tad Eggleston: But, like… Izzy… has…
- 13:11Tad Eggleston: it's, like, amazing that Izzy never feels like her character is wrong, because you can easily imagine how she has changed since that previous Izzy that you've seen.
- 13:25Tad Eggleston: You know, you get just enough clues to go, okay, this is… this is not the Izzy that threw them out of the house and was…
- 13:32Tad Eggleston: blah blah blah, or this is not the Izzy that was putting all of the… the…
- 13:38Tad Eggleston: The… the milk cartons on the wall, you know,
- 13:47Tad Eggleston: And this is still an Izzy that makes sense, but at the same time, we just have so many gaps in how you get there.
- 13:54Marisol: Yeah.
- 13:55Tad Eggleston: You know… Whereas with Maggie and Hopi.
- 14:01Tad Eggleston: with Maggie and Hopi, we, like, see all of their changes, and with, like, Julie Rhee and… and… I'm forgetting the names of so many of their other friends.
- 14:12Tad Eggleston: Right. They, they just… they don't actually seem to change that much.
- 14:17Maria Pena: No, I mean, jewelry is still the same airhead. Right. there was one more theme in this, in this, story, which was that everybody's always asking about Hopi. Oh, Hopi was so cool, and Hopi this. Yeah, yeah. And, you know.
- 14:35Tad Eggleston: Well, and, and you know.
- 14:36Maria Pena: It affects Maggie a little bit.
- 14:37Tad Eggleston: after the time at the bar, where, like, Hopi with the eyepatch, being the badass, and…
- 14:44Tad Eggleston: Yeah. Maggie being the day drinker.
- 14:47Tad Eggleston: like…
- 14:48Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 14:49Tad Eggleston: That's… that's such an interesting… dichotomy to then have everybody asking about Hopi.
- 14:57Maria Pena: Yeah, and even easy, even easy goes, I should have put you in the book, not Hopi, instead of the.
- 15:04Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 15:04Maria Pena: chapter about Hobie. Right.
- 15:07Tad Eggleston: You should have dedicated the chapter to you, not Hopi.
- 15:10Maria Pena: That's right, yeah.
- 15:11Marisol: Hmm.
- 15:12Tad Eggleston: I know.
- 15:15Tad Eggleston: Well, and this goes back to what I know I've said a number of times, and I think it's kind of… Maggie's the rock, and Hopi's the wild child.
- 15:26Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 15:27Tad Eggleston: He's the one that takes care of everybody, and Hopi's the one that everybody loves.
- 15:33Maria Pena: Yeah, she's the one that makes that impression, and Maggie's a bit in the background.
- 15:38Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah.
- 15:41Maria Pena: But I think Maggie…
- 15:42Marisol: Related to Hokie.
- 15:44Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 15:45Maria Pena: But I think Maggie, Maggie… has,
- 15:51Maria Pena: You know, inspired more, deeper love from…
- 15:55Tad Eggleston: Oh, yeah, yeah, I know.
- 15:56Maria Pena: Like, people are obsessed with Maggie, you know? Like, whoever's obsessed with Maggie are obsessed with her.
- 16:02Tad Eggleston: Obsessed with Maggie.
- 16:04Tad Eggleston: I'm one of those people. I'm obsessed.
- 16:06Tad Eggleston: Hope he's cool, but… but, like.
- 16:09Maria Pena: Yeah, exactly.
- 16:10Tad Eggleston: Maggie is one of my favorite characters in all of comics.
- 16:14Maria Pena: And she looks so beautiful in that, in that, third, the shot, and then…
- 16:21Tad Eggleston: She looks beautiful in every shape.
- 16:23Maria Pena: Fair.
- 16:24Tad Eggleston: has ever been in. I, I don't, I don't care…
- 16:27Tad Eggleston: I don't care if she's supposed to be fat, or supposed to be skinny, or whatever. I don't think he's ever drawn Maggie in a way that I don't think she's fucking gorgeous.
- 16:38Maria Pena: Yeah, she's gorgeous.
- 16:43Maria Pena: Totally.
- 16:45Tad Eggleston: It's very huggable.
- 16:47Tad Eggleston: Always…
- 16:47Maria Pena: Internationally.
- 16:48Tad Eggleston: pokeable.
- 16:49Maria Pena: Very.
- 16:50Marisol: Meh.
- 16:51Maria Pena: Fond of her.
- 16:52Marisol: Very friend-shaped.
- 16:57Tad Eggleston: Then our Q&A about where they came back, that we talked about a little bit off the air.
- 17:03Tad Eggleston: I love it. It turns out that essentially they came back because Love & Rockets brings them in!
- 17:09Tad Eggleston: The title's a cursing a button at the same time, says Jaime.
- 17:15Maria Pena: Yes, because Gilbert complains that people weren't… weren't buying the other, you know, titles. You know, I mean, he sort of doesn't complain, but he kind of implies that.
- 17:27Tad Eggleston: He states the reality that, like, the other ones… Weren't selling as well.
- 17:35Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 17:40Maria Pena: And there you go, so,
- 17:45Maria Pena: So, yeah, that was the most interesting kind of…
- 17:51Maria Pena: thing to glean from this Q&A.
- 17:54Tad Eggleston: Yeah. Well, and as we said before, I get it, because there was something very, very…
- 18:02Tad Eggleston: comforting about coming back to 11 rockets.
- 18:06Tad Eggleston: having both Jaime and Beto in the same issue, different kinds of stories, without having to go track down different issues to have the different stories.
- 18:16Maria Pena: Again, spending all that money, man, on this extra COVID. I'll be honest.
- 18:21Tad Eggleston: Well, there's that, too, but, like, even.
- 18:24Maria Pena: I'm getting a…
- 18:24Tad Eggleston: Same amount of money, I…
- 18:30Tad Eggleston: Okay, this is one of those places where I'm gonna break for breaking news, just because this is something that we're gonna certainly be talking about next week on Love and Rockets. Trump has deployed troops to Portland, authorizing full force, if necessary.
- 18:45Tad Eggleston: For what I don't know…
- 18:50Maria Pena: Okay.
- 18:52Marisol: Yeah…
- 18:53Tad Eggleston: But I do… and, like, I probably wouldn't have brought it up if it was any other city.
- 18:59Tad Eggleston: But I remember at the end of… Trump's first term,
- 19:05Tad Eggleston: he kept insisting that Portland was on fire because of the… the…
- 19:11Tad Eggleston: the Black Lives Matter protests and whatnot, and, like, there's a huge comics community in Portland, so, like, comics Twitter at the time was just filled with people taking walks and going, this is Portland.
- 19:25Tad Eggleston: Do you see any fires? Nope.
- 19:27Tad Eggleston: And sometimes even walking down to the one place where there was a protest, and going, see? There's the protest, everything you're seeing on the news is in this angle, and then just turning around to go, see? There's nothing going on over there. It's just this block.
- 19:50Marisol: Oh, man.
- 19:52Maria Pena: Yeah, okay, yeah.
- 19:55Tad Eggleston: So yeah, that just put this episode in a time and place, and
- 19:59Tad Eggleston: Unless either of you have further comments, Move on, I just…
- 20:04Maria Pena: saying before, you know, every morning I wake up and I look at the news and go, what did he do today? What bullshit?
- 20:10Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 20:11Maria Pena: Something else.
- 20:11Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah. I'm saying everything but a way.
- 20:15Tad Eggleston: And for that matter, you know, like, in Malta or… Or…
- 20:21Tad Eggleston: Or when you're in Australia, you know, enough happens while you're asleep that, like, the first stories that happened while you were asleep…
- 20:32Tad Eggleston: are old news now. They're 7 stories down on… they're page 22 now, even though they happened this morning.
- 20:44Maria Pena: It's crazy.
- 20:46Tad Eggleston: Yeah, like, it happens way too fast to keep a hold of… keep track of.
- 20:52Marisol: Yeah.
- 20:54Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 20:55Tad Eggleston: So, yeah. Yeah, yeah, just centering us in reality for a moment before moving on to what is probably my
- 21:05Tad Eggleston: Favorite.
- 21:07Tad Eggleston: Beto non-Luba family story.
- 21:13Maria Pena: I thought you were gonna say the non-story, because it was just like, what the fuck is happening here?
- 21:20Tad Eggleston: Coolio Day! This is… this is definitely one… that,
- 21:30Tad Eggleston: It's a long-form story that he tells through parts. I've only actually ever read it as the graphic novel.
- 21:38Maria Pena: Okay.
- 21:39Tad Eggleston: Curious to read it like this.
- 21:41Tad Eggleston: Because essentially, it, it, it, like, it's called Julio's Day, but, but it essentially takes you through a hundred years of his life.
- 21:51Maria Pena: Huh?
- 21:52Maria Pena: Interesting, okay. I didn't know that, because I was like, first of all, why did the uncle throw the kid into the ravine, and then, and then…
- 22:01Marisol: Okay.
- 22:02Maria Pena: And then, kind of, found him in… in… in brackets, you know. What, what the hell?
- 22:08Maria Pena: And is it… Did he… he didn't switch him for another baby, I imagine.
- 22:15Maria Pena: It's like, is that the same baby?
- 22:18Maria Pena: Surely he died.
- 22:20Maria Pena: Surely it would have died if it was thrown down this…
- 22:23Maria Pena: It is just the weirdest thing.
- 22:29Maria Pena: else going on? A little…
- 22:30Marisol: Confused by that.
- 22:32Tad Eggleston: And… and this is one where… where I think we're gonna start…
- 22:36Tad Eggleston: I mean, it's, it, it, it, it also…
- 22:41Tad Eggleston: Has a healthy dose of magical realism throughout the whole thing.
- 22:46Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 22:51Maria Pena: Oh, yeah.
- 22:53Maria Pena: crazy guy speaking in tongues, or whatever. Right. Having a… having a fit.
- 23:00Maria Pena: That was weird.
- 23:02Marisol: Yeah.
- 23:04Marisol: A strange little story.
- 23:05Tad Eggleston: Like, the, the, the little… The, the slightly bigger kid.
- 23:10Tad Eggleston: kicking… kicking Julio because…
- 23:14Maria Pena: He doesn't…
- 23:15Tad Eggleston: up.
- 23:16Tad Eggleston: Because, his friend makes a joke about them getting married.
- 23:23Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 23:24Tad Eggleston: But then, you know, a few pages forward, you're gonna get me in trouble one day.
- 23:30Maria Pena: And there, yeah, he's got his arm around him. And that kid looks like Fortune, we gotta say.
- 23:36Tad Eggleston: Disgusting Fortunato.
- 23:39Maria Pena: Yeah, I guess…
- 23:40Tad Eggleston: And I want to say, it is in… it is in the… in, like, the Luba universe.
- 23:46Tad Eggleston: I think it… I think it even gets, like, seriously established there at some point.
- 23:51Tad Eggleston: But it's, like, a different village.
- 23:54Tad Eggleston: And not… Not a tie.
- 23:57Maria Pena: Levant.
- 23:58Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 24:01Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 24:02Tad Eggleston: But yeah, the crazy guy's… I love the…
- 24:07Tad Eggleston: He could have 100 fits a day, and I'd still marry him.
- 24:11Maria Pena: Yeah, that girl, the, he's… he's her… the sister, Julio's sister, she's just got a crush on this crazy guy.
- 24:20Tad Eggleston: With us knowing so much.
- 24:21Maria Pena: Let me.
- 24:21Tad Eggleston: That you don't even know, is it because he's cute? Is it because he's a nice guy when he's not having a.
- 24:28Marisol: That's fair.
- 24:28Tad Eggleston: blank.
- 24:29Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 24:30Tad Eggleston: I mean, this is just… in many ways, it's a setup. We get… we have at least 4 really strong characters that you want to know more about. You've got Julio, his sister, this crazy guy, and the uncle.
- 24:44Maria Pena: The uncle, yeah. The uncle. What was his motivation?
- 24:48Tad Eggleston: Right. What was, what was going on there?
- 24:52Maria Pena: And the sister's really clued in, like, she's, like, she knows that the uncle had something to do with it.
- 24:59Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 25:04Maria Pena: Yeah, so yeah, interesting, story. I didn't know that it continued. As a standalone story, I was like, what the heck? Yeah.
- 25:14Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah.
- 25:15Tad Eggleston: No, it's.
- 25:16Marisol: Also, we'll have some of those questions.
- 25:18Tad Eggleston: One of… one of my favorite…
- 25:19Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 25:20Tad Eggleston: Beto volumes is Julio's day.
- 25:23Tad Eggleston: And I want to say it wound up… when it came out as a hardcover, it was, like, one of the things that won all of the awards.
- 25:31Marisol: Oh, wow.
- 25:32Tad Eggleston: Like… With Jaime, people still talk about Death of Speedy.
- 25:42Tad Eggleston: with Beto, it's split between people talking about
- 25:46Tad Eggleston: Poison River and people talking about Julio's day, when they talk about, like, individual Great.
- 25:54Maria Pena: Yeah, I mean, I mean, in human diastropism is pretty epic.
- 25:59Tad Eggleston: My theory on why that one doesn't get talked about as much is people are afraid to pronounce it.
- 26:07Maria Pena: She's here to go, who knew?
- 26:11Tad Eggleston: Let's just talk about Poison River.
- 26:14Maria Pena: And Julio said, easy.
- 26:17Maria Pena: True.
- 26:18Tad Eggleston: And for that matter, I mean, my theory on why Death is Speedy gets talked about so much more than so much other highway stuff actually just has to do with its, like.
- 26:29Tad Eggleston: One of few clearly delineated storylines with a title.
- 26:34Tad Eggleston: that's…
- 26:34Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 26:37Maria Pena: Yes, but it culminates in Speedy's death.
- 26:41Maria Pena: And… and the aftermath. Like, yes, it has a… it's got a trajectory towards speed is there.
- 26:47Tad Eggleston: Because as good as it is, like, I don't think it's the best of its work.
- 26:53Tad Eggleston: I don't think it's anywhere near the best word.
- 26:56Tad Eggleston: You know, it was his best of his work up to then.
- 27:01Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 27:02Marisol: But then he has…
- 27:03Tad Eggleston: He kept getting better, he kept doing weird things.
- 27:07Maria Pena: Yeah, I think it is a very marketable.
- 27:12Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 27:13Maria Pena: Sort of package, yeah, that probably has.
- 27:15Tad Eggleston: I mean, honestly,
- 27:17Tad Eggleston: you know, we still have a ways to go to get to these, because I think they're collected in news stories and
- 27:26Tad Eggleston: maybe even starting into… to Volume 4, but, like.
- 27:31Tad Eggleston: Two of Jaime's more recent collections, the Love Bunglers and Is This How You See Me, are, like.
- 27:40Tad Eggleston: To me, among the best work he's ever done.
- 27:44Tad Eggleston: If not the best work he's ever done. Because they just build on everything before them.
- 27:51Tad Eggleston: And still keep it interesting. You don't even have, like, new characters or anything in, I think, either of those books, or at least minimal numbers of new characters. It's still primarily Maggie's stories.
- 28:03Maria Pena: Mmm.
- 28:05Tad Eggleston: In her late 40s and early 50s.
- 28:10Tad Eggleston: I can't wait to get to those with you.
- 28:14Tad Eggleston: Cause they're just… they're so good.
- 28:16Tad Eggleston: Which is the other thing.
- 28:17Marisol: I'm excited.
- 28:18Tad Eggleston: I'm so happy to be back to loving rockets, rather than… Then, like, the, the…
- 28:25Tad Eggleston: all of the different titles in between, because it means I know that, like, We're… we're a set.
- 28:34Tad Eggleston: you know, right now, we're… I think there's… there are 20 Love & Rockets Volume 2, there are 8 news stories, and there are 15 Love & Rockets Volume 4, so…
- 28:46Tad Eggleston: like…
- 28:48Maria Pena: Wait, where's Volume 3?
- 28:51Tad Eggleston: Volume 3 is the news stories.
- 28:53Maria Pena: Oh, okay, okay.
- 28:54Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 28:55Tad Eggleston: So, like… We're legitimately about a year or so, depending on how many
- 29:03Tad Eggleston: Weeks we take off from being, like, Up to date.
- 29:10Marisol: Yeah.
- 29:12Tad Eggleston: And that's gonna be fun.
- 29:16Tad Eggleston: So how about our Mario story? That I think…
- 29:19Tad Eggleston: I don't know if Gilbert did the penciling and inking, or if he just inked.
- 29:26Maria Pena: Oh, yeah.
- 29:27Tad Eggleston: TV, Inc.
- 29:29Marisol: Yeah.
- 29:30Maria Pena: Yes.
- 29:32Tad Eggleston: You know, the fixes…
- 29:34Maria Pena: I think the layouts are really clear, and I think it's more than inking. I would say he did.
- 29:40Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I have a feeling Mario wrote it, and Gilbert did all the drawing.
- 29:45Maria Pena: Yep.
- 29:46Maria Pena: But, I, I found this story…
- 29:51Marisol: Mario style.
- 29:53Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 29:54Maria Pena: I think the first splash looks a little bit like Mario Star, but it also looks like early Beto, in a way. Heavy inking.
- 30:04Maria Pena: The first flash, you know, the doot, boop, boop.
- 30:09Maria Pena: I found it, hard to follow at the beginning.
- 30:15Tad Eggleston: a little bit.
- 30:17Maria Pena: But… Yeah, it's very dense in terms of geopolitics and whatever is going on there.
- 30:27Tad Eggleston: I mean, you know…
- 30:28Maria Pena: Relatively this.
- 30:30Tad Eggleston: Mario is definitely the one… I mean, I think we noticed this a couple of times.
- 30:35Tad Eggleston: Way back in Volume 1, Mario is definitely the one that's most… Most common… drawn to write, like.
- 30:46Tad Eggleston: If not, like, nonfiction of geopolitics going on, like, very timely geopolitical stories.
- 30:55Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 30:56Tad Eggleston: And I feel like… this…
- 31:00Maria Pena: Yeah, this is…
- 31:01Tad Eggleston: I know one of those.
- 31:03Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 31:04Maria Pena: The good thing is that because, Gilbert drew it, it's definitely… a much more…
- 31:14Tad Eggleston: You know, the…
- 31:16Maria Pena: kind of storytelling in it.
- 31:18Tad Eggleston: The… the capitalists buying off the… the…
- 31:22Tad Eggleston: The military leader who then turns on Does his own thing anyway.
- 31:30Tad Eggleston: Yeah. But then also the, the, the, like…
- 31:37Tad Eggleston: You know, part of that is, like, the businessman that's there
- 31:43Tad Eggleston: But then you also have, like.
- 31:46Tad Eggleston: The story of his family home without him.
- 31:50Tad Eggleston: Yeah, like…
- 31:52Maria Pena: He's… who is… yeah.
- 31:56Tad Eggleston: And that's kinda, go ahead.
- 32:01Maria Pena: Sorry, no, I, I… go on, sorry, I, I'm forgetting.
- 32:04Tad Eggleston: I was gonna say, it's kind of a very interesting…
- 32:09Tad Eggleston: like, dichotomy. Here's your family at home without you. Here's…
- 32:15Tad Eggleston: Like, everything going to shit on the other side of the world.
- 32:19Tad Eggleston: And then, like, he discovers that, oh, there was a…
- 32:24Tad Eggleston: bribe going on, and I have the money.
- 32:30Maria Pena: Yep.
- 32:32Tad Eggleston: As, as, you know, his wife discovers things about her father.
- 32:39Tad Eggleston: And I feel like we're gonna wind up discovering more, since her father and daughter went off to find her husband.
- 32:46Tad Eggleston: Like, this feels like the setup to a… to a deeper, more intriguing story, which makes me kind of happy that Gilbert's drawing, because…
- 32:57Tad Eggleston: you know, Mario… Mario, I think, has done a number of stories where I loved
- 33:04Tad Eggleston: Loved, like, the thriller, you know, the political thriller aspect of them.
- 33:10Maria Pena: Yep.
- 33:12Tad Eggleston: What the art took away.
- 33:14Tad Eggleston: And… and I kind of feel like this one…
- 33:18Tad Eggleston: you know, Beto's got the… The storytelling down.
- 33:24Tad Eggleston: I'm really curious as to… Where it's gonna go and how long it's gonna last.
- 33:30Maria Pena: Yes, yeah.
- 33:32Maria Pena: Yeah, he's definitely… Keeping it very clear, visually.
- 33:38Tad Eggleston: I do love this, this image of… of the daughter reading Twit.
- 33:44Tad Eggleston: The… the grandfather looking every ounce the mafia Don with the coat over his shoulders, smoking the cigarette, and then just the lost father.
- 33:56Tad Eggleston: It's, like, the sun.
- 34:01Maria Pena: Well, he's looming, or is he remembering?
- 34:07Maria Pena: I guess his… his memory, or whatever. I guess… I guess there…
- 34:12Maria Pena: What is it, like a… like, in a… in a… in a movie, you know.
- 34:17Maria Pena: It would be one scene juxtaposed over the other. Right.
- 34:21Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 34:22Marisol: Yep.
- 34:28Tad Eggleston: And then finish up with, with the,
- 34:33Tad Eggleston: The military guy, I knew we were being double-crossed. See that our police force is conspicuously absent for the next few weeks. Our people need to feel a little freedom.
- 34:49Maria Pena: Huh.
- 34:51Tad Eggleston: Bitch.
- 34:52Tad Eggleston: I think is code for… we're not gonna protect them from the shit that's coming, so that… so that…
- 34:59Tad Eggleston: Elko, please, please, send in the police!
- 35:04Marisol: We will beg for our help later.
- 35:07Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 35:09Tad Eggleston: What'd you guys think of the… the… Beto's short here.
- 35:14Tad Eggleston: That was hilarious.
- 35:17Maria Pena: Yeah, it really is.
- 35:18Marisol: Cute.
- 35:20Maria Pena: The, word balloons were straight out of, nemo… .
- 35:28Tad Eggleston: Well, and it's dedicated to his wife.
- 35:31Marisol: Hmm.
- 35:32Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 35:32Tad Eggleston: And it's right around the time Natalia was born.
- 35:37Maria Pena: Okay.
- 35:39Tad Eggleston: So, I mean, I think this is, like, his weird story about becoming a father.
- 35:45Maria Pena: your own.
- 35:50Maria Pena: Yeah, very cute.
- 35:55Tad Eggleston: And just completely whacked out back cover.
- 35:58Tad Eggleston: That doesn't have anything to do with anything. Yeah.
- 36:01Maria Pena: Sweet.
- 36:01Marisol: Just fun.
- 36:04Maria Pena: Yeah, I love the drunk… the drunken guy coming out of the…
- 36:08Tad Eggleston: 10.
- 36:09Maria Pena: brothel, I think, or something.
- 36:12Tad Eggleston: And just cause, like.
- 36:14Tad Eggleston: Betta was drawing way too much in this period. We're gonna take a quick look at Luba number 9 as well.
- 36:21Marisol: Yep.
- 36:23Tad Eggleston: I love this… I love the Ophelia of all of this.
- 36:30Tad Eggleston: Yes.
- 36:31Maria Pena: Yes.
- 36:32Tad Eggleston: You know, writing your book.
- 36:34Maria Pena: So… It's not like…
- 36:38Marisol: who involved with everybody at this point? Yeah.
- 36:43Maria Pena: for Donato, and he Fortunato!
- 36:47Marisol: Yes. Robert Redford…
- 36:51Tad Eggleston: passed away.
- 36:53Tad Eggleston: Recently, and one of the stories that got mentioned a lot was,
- 36:58Tad Eggleston: Apparently, he wanted to be in The Graduate.
- 37:02Tad Eggleston: And Mike Nichols… Mike Nichols is like, no, you're wrong for it. He's like, well, I can act, I can figure out, and he's like.
- 37:11Tad Eggleston: So what does it feel like when a girl rejects you?
- 37:15Maria Pena: And he's like, what do you mean?
- 37:17Tad Eggleston: And he's like… When a girl what?
- 37:24Marisol: Oh my god.
- 37:25Tad Eggleston: I, I, I don't understand.
- 37:28Maria Pena: What are you talking about?
- 37:32Tad Eggleston: When you want to have sex with a girl, and she doesn't want to talk to you, Huh?
- 37:46Maria Pena: Yeah, no, he definitely wasn't good for… wasn't right for that part.
- 37:52Maria Pena: And isn't that wonderful that Dustin Hoffman got it? Because that was perfect.
- 37:57Tad Eggleston: Hell yeah.
- 37:59Tad Eggleston: So… Yeah, I also, I like that, that Ophelia and… And… is this Socorro?
- 38:11Tad Eggleston: Yeah, Ophelia and Socorro understand that
- 38:15Tad Eggleston: She got our brains from her mom.
- 38:18Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 38:21Maria Pena: That school looks really hard.
- 38:24Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 38:25Tad Eggleston: Which is why I also love it on the next page, the Luba, immigration, taxes, cell phones.
- 38:34Maria Pena: repairs and cell phones.
- 38:36Marisol: Zoo!
- 38:37Tad Eggleston: all of the different things that I know that I can…
- 38:41Tad Eggleston: I mean, just like she had the bathhouse and the movie theater, you know? Luba's always been the one that can go, okay, this is…
- 38:51Tad Eggleston: You know, I mean, it's easy for us to fall into all of Luba's…
- 38:57Tad Eggleston: I mean, the same way, you know.
- 39:00Tad Eggleston: Socorro's talking, like, no, a lady teacher asked what she looked like naked.
- 39:11Tad Eggleston: You know, it's so easy for us to fall into Luba's wild side, and the fact that, like.
- 39:21Tad Eggleston: She has… both a… And with Luba, it really is both. It's a… a…
- 39:34Tad Eggleston: I have responsibilities, but I deserve to also enjoy my life, slash self-destructive streak.
- 39:42Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 39:43Tad Eggleston: She also sometimes takes it too far.
- 39:51Tad Eggleston: for her own good. I mean, not too far as in I'm passing moral judgment, but, like, there are times where she's reached points where it's like, oh…
- 40:00Marisol: No, no, no, this is not what I wanted.
- 40:07Tad Eggleston: That's interesting, and I think…
- 40:11Tad Eggleston: What, what do you think? Do you think it was an accident that, that, that, maricela…
- 40:16Maria Pena: We're still running through.
- 40:19Tad Eggleston: Ran into Kamo, or do you think Kamo found it?
- 40:22Marisol: I don't think so.
- 40:23Marisol: He probably found her.
- 40:26Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 40:26Marisol: casino… Maricela and Luba don't talk.
- 40:31Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I really feel like he's playing… .
- 40:37Marisol: Peacemaker?
- 40:38Maria Pena: In between her.
- 40:39Marisol: them.
- 40:41Marisol: They're trying to at least extend an olive branch or something.
- 40:43Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 40:44Tad Eggleston: Well, particularly because, you know, she's sitting there, lying there in bed, seeing him
- 40:50Tad Eggleston: Almost made me give a shit about my mother for a second.
- 40:56Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 41:00Tad Eggleston: So, yeah. Kamo is, as always, way deeper than he seems. That was even true.
- 41:08Marisol: Mia.
- 41:09Tad Eggleston: was the pretty boy Fortunato wannabe.
- 41:12Tad Eggleston: It's been particularly true.
- 41:16Marisol: There's… there's… there's always been a lot of depth to combo.
- 41:20Tad Eggleston: No.
- 41:21Tad Eggleston: People's Burden.
- 41:25Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 41:25Tad Eggleston: Being in love with her daughters.
- 41:29Tad Eggleston: Her, her, her, her, her, her son's lover.
- 41:33Marisol: Person.
- 41:34Tad Eggleston: Is apparently her burden.
- 41:36Tad Eggleston: also, like… Yeah.
- 41:41Maria Pena: I didn't know what to say.
- 41:42Maria Pena: I think this was just… That scene with, with Fritz and the gun was like, what?
- 41:50Marisol: Yeah, like, why? Why do you have a gun?
- 41:54Tad Eggleston: Fritz is into guns.
- 41:56Maria Pena: preaches it to Guns, and she…
- 41:58Marisol: next thing.
- 41:59Maria Pena: and people got their boobs, and just like, is that, like, some kind of game? Some kind of sexy thing? I don't know.
- 42:08Marisol: Yeah.
- 42:10Tad Eggleston: I… Of Two Minds might have been my favorite story.
- 42:14Maria Pena: Yes.
- 42:15Tad Eggleston: I mean, the whole thing.
- 42:17Marisol: fun.
- 42:18Tad Eggleston: thought bubbles.
- 42:21Maria Pena: Yes, and they're having conflicting thoughts.
- 42:24Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 42:24Maria Pena: they're both…
- 42:27Maria Pena: you know, they're both kind of like, oh, she shouldn't be fighting, she shouldn't be fighting for different reasons. And then when she…
- 42:34Maria Pena: She says, oh, she's not gonna fight. She's like, but why? Why isn't she fighting? You shouldn't just…
- 42:38Marisol: You know, it's like, I can't believe that.
- 42:42Tad Eggleston: And then Hector will talk him into it. Talk her into it. He better.
- 42:45Maria Pena: He's better, yeah.
- 42:47Tad Eggleston: Yeah, loss, you can't… can't leave on a loss.
- 42:51Maria Pena: Yeah, yeah, so it was…
- 42:53Tad Eggleston: Rematch required.
- 42:55Marisol: Beautiful.
- 42:55Maria Pena: Yes, perfect, depiction of in two months, and…
- 43:02Maria Pena: Literally two nights, Venus in it.
- 43:06Tad Eggleston: I do have to say, I'm just noticing this, that, like…
- 43:11Tad Eggleston: the Fortunato, with Luba getting up and leaving.
- 43:16Tad Eggleston: I think is the only Fortunato I've ever seen drawn where he doesn't look
- 43:21Tad Eggleston: 100% confident. It's like, oh wow, I got knocked out, and… and she's going away now.
- 43:30Tad Eggleston: There's that little shiver, almost.
- 43:33Maria Pena: Is it a shiver, or is he glowing?
- 43:36Tad Eggleston: I mean, I think it's supposed to be…
- 43:38Marisol: form.
- 43:39Tad Eggleston: But, like, the way his lips…
- 43:42Marisol: Like, his facial expression.
- 43:44Tad Eggleston: Makes it feel more like a shiver to me.
- 43:47Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 43:48Maria Pena: And then…
- 43:49Marisol: aren't specialized.
- 43:52Maria Pena: The title is from that, you know, backdoor Man.
- 43:55Tad Eggleston: Hi. The doors.
- 43:57Maria Pena: But the little girls understand.
- 44:00Tad Eggleston: Hell, yeah.
- 44:01Maria Pena: Which is there, yeah.
- 44:04Tad Eggleston: So, like, it… I feel like it may be the one and only time Fortunato meets his match is in Luba.
- 44:12Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 44:15Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 44:17Tad Eggleston: Guadala.
- 44:17Marisol: Everyone else?
- 44:18Tad Eggleston: Possible.
- 44:19Marisol: Totally fine.
- 44:20Tad Eggleston: pissed off at her students, but then goes and finds Fortunato.
- 44:24Maria Pena: And it's funny that she's like, oh, your neck is not as big as my husband's, but her nipples are getting ready.
- 44:31Tad Eggleston: Right, right.
- 44:32Maria Pena: She's getting excited, and she goes, and Fortunato! Right.
- 44:37Tad Eggleston: Didn't happen. How could it, if he's only an illusion?
- 44:42Maria Pena: But it's just a dream.
- 44:46Maria Pena: This story is all about, is fortunate or real or imaginary, isn't it?
- 44:50Tad Eggleston: Well, and then, I love this one, too, where, like.
- 44:54Tad Eggleston: they're… they're calling… they're calling, Maricel unclean for having… Tried to have a baby.
- 45:04Marisol: And so.
- 45:04Tad Eggleston: And she remembers Fortunato.
- 45:07Maria Pena: And it's Renato, yeah, yeah.
- 45:09Marisol: His whole damn family has slept with 14 Autumn at one point or another. I swear.
- 45:14Tad Eggleston: But this, this page was my favorite, where, like, like, Ophelia is all, oh no, whatever, my muse, yeah, no, no, and, like, he still manages…
- 45:28Tad Eggleston: Fortunato.
- 45:30Maria Pena: I was just leaving Amelia.
- 45:33Maria Pena: I know, even… Two, Ophelia? Jesus.
- 45:37Tad Eggleston: You know…
- 45:39Tad Eggleston: Their surface appeal will fade over time, but not even their inner beauty has ever compared to your grace, your passion, your radiance.
- 45:47Marisol: Yep.
- 45:48Tad Eggleston: Nice compliment, but Peepo hasn't aged since she was 18. You're not the only one with magic in your veins, and you have it in mind and soul.
- 45:57Maria Pena: And so…
- 45:58Tad Eggleston: Beautiful.
- 45:58Maria Pena: Beautiful.
- 45:59Tad Eggleston: firing. Ageless.
- 46:02Tad Eggleston: Fortunato! Fortunato!
- 46:06Maria Pena: You better does it again.
- 46:08Maria Pena: Oh, man.
- 46:11Marisol: That's a riot.
- 46:14Tad Eggleston: Thank you.
- 46:16Maria Pena: Yeah, so, yeah, is he real, or is he, just a… You know?
- 46:25Maria Pena: Just the treatment of everyone's imagination. And then, even Camo can feel the Fortunato effect.
- 46:33Tad Eggleston: Right. You know, and I just love… I love the look on her face, it's like, how'd you know?
- 46:39Tad Eggleston: How'd you know?
- 46:39Marisol: Yep.
- 46:41Maria Pena: Is it because Camo slept with Fortunato?
- 46:44Tad Eggleston: It might be. Maybe.
- 46:47Maria Pena: And he can feel… He can feel his presence.
- 46:52Tad Eggleston: Maybe, maybe fortunate enough…
- 46:54Maria Pena: Luba.
- 46:55Tad Eggleston: How about this? Maybe Fortunato is Kamo.
- 46:59Maria Pena: Oh.
- 46:59Tad Eggleston: It's, it's the unburned…
- 47:01Tad Eggleston: I have to go back and look at early… I mean, I remember Kama with a mohawk, but, like…
- 47:07Marisol: Yeah.
- 47:09Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 47:09Tad Eggleston: I feel, I feel like some of the… That's some of the… Facial.
- 47:20Marisol: Teachers are very…
- 47:21Tad Eggleston: The structures are really similar.
- 47:24Maria Pena: Yay!
- 47:24Marisol: And I think this part… This is the first time we… we've seen Kamu.
- 47:30Tad Eggleston: Of course, that…
- 47:31Marisol: I would work.
- 47:32Maria Pena: That would also installs, yeah.
- 47:33Marisol: Run.
- 47:34Tad Eggleston: really, really…
- 47:35Tad Eggleston: creepy, because that'd mean that Fortunato slash Kamo is banging a number of his daughters, so let's… let's…
- 47:43Maria Pena: That's not the…
- 47:45Tad Eggleston: are different people. I've changed.
- 47:47Maria Pena: Yeah, yeah.
- 47:50Marisol: They have to be.
- 47:52Maria Pena: Totally, yeah, yeah. No, but there's something going on there, and as you were saying, Marisole, he's actually uttered a word, not just
- 48:04Maria Pena: Ron.
- 48:05Marisol: It's not just silence or some, like.
- 48:08Marisol: Noise or grunts, an actual word that we've gotten from him since he was burned.
- 48:15Maria Pena: Yep.
- 48:18Maria Pena: So, yeah.
- 48:21Maria Pena: Interesting.
- 48:22Tad Eggleston: But man, this is how you draw a sex scene.
- 48:24Tad Eggleston: Like, start to finish.
- 48:27Tad Eggleston: Like, like, like, from the… the… he's in the other room to… to…
- 48:31Marisol: Yep.
- 48:32Tad Eggleston: We're all done… Yeah, it's just…
- 48:35Maria Pena: And they've swapped places, you know, she's in the foreground at the beginning.
- 48:39Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 48:40Maria Pena: The background is…
- 48:41Marisol: the movement.
- 48:41Maria Pena: The end, he's in the foreground, she's in the background looking at it.
- 48:46Maria Pena: A nice little…
- 48:48Tad Eggleston: Well, in a lot of ways.
- 48:49Tad Eggleston: Where they most swap places is when they swap places in foreplay.
- 48:56Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 48:58Tad Eggleston: Luba is central.
- 49:02Tad Eggleston: Up until the middle, where they go from
- 49:06Tad Eggleston: Kamo going down on… on her, to him… her going down on him.
- 49:11Tad Eggleston: And then for the rest of that row, they're kinda equal.
- 49:16Marisol: It's more.
- 49:17Tad Eggleston: and Lubo's… Luba's boobs, and her… her head's kind of down at the bottom.
- 49:22Tad Eggleston: But then, Kamo is central to the bottom row, so, like, yeah, it's…
- 49:28Tad Eggleston: That's kind of a brilliantly done 9-panel asymmetric grid.
- 49:36Marisol: It's lovely.
- 49:37Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 49:42Tad Eggleston: Fritz and Peepo sitting in a tree.
- 49:45Maria Pena: I don't see anything.
- 49:47Tad Eggleston: They seem to be at the ocean.
- 49:50Maria Pena: Not on the tree.
- 49:53Tad Eggleston: I love the going backwards to everybody being young again.
- 49:59Marisol: Yeah.
- 50:04Maria Pena: So… so I guess… Bibo has asked.
- 50:10Maria Pena: Fritz to break up with everybody, and…
- 50:14Tad Eggleston: Well, at least to break up with her son.
- 50:17Marisol: Yeah.
- 50:19Marisol: And Petro's got some.
- 50:21Maria Pena: Oh, yeah.
- 50:21Marisol: people.
- 50:23Maria Pena: That's right, and Petra has to…
- 50:25Maria Pena: Well, people has to break up with the Igor.
- 50:29Tad Eggleston: Yeah. And she learns English to dump him.
- 50:34Marisol: Yep.
- 50:35Maria Pena: No.
- 50:38Maria Pena: Oh, and that's right, this one had a tweet at the end. Oh, that was really like, holy shit, oh. And then there's a texting with Gato and Guadalupe, and I was like, whoa!
- 50:48Tad Eggleston: Guadalupe.
- 50:49Marisol: Yep.
- 50:50Tad Eggleston: All because she was essentially rejected by Sergio.
- 50:56Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 50:57Tad Eggleston: You know, she was essentially offering to leave Gatto for Sergio.
- 51:02Tad Eggleston: But he rejected her, so she goes home and bangs her husband.
- 51:06Maria Pena: Brings are messy.
- 51:10Maria Pena: Yeah, and then, and then that's Venus.
- 51:15Tad Eggleston: But, I…
- 51:17Maria Pena: I mean, sorry, Petra.
- 51:19Maria Pena: They would normally…
- 51:21Marisol: Excuse me.
- 51:21Maria Pena: Oh, sorry, go on.
- 51:22Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I would normally not bring this up.
- 51:25Tad Eggleston: But… but it's one of the few…
- 51:27Tad Eggleston: times that we see penetration from Beto, other than.
- 51:32Maria Pena: We're playing?
- 51:32Marisol: of them.
- 51:33Tad Eggleston: And I… I think that's all because of the earlier… her telling Fortunato that her husband has a bigger dick than he does.
- 51:41Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 51:42Tad Eggleston: So it's like, see? He barely even fits.
- 51:46Marisol: Yeah.
- 51:47Maria Pena: No, no, I was like, whoa!
- 51:51Marisol: I'm surprised!
- 51:53Maria Pena: Yeah, no, that caught me by surprise. I was like, oh shit, look at that.
- 51:57Tad Eggleston: Yep.
- 51:58Marisol: Yep.
- 51:59Maria Pena: become approved.
- 52:00Tad Eggleston: And, like, among the least sexy images in the book, Like, even the next…
- 52:05Tad Eggleston: Way more sexy. I mean, to take the actual penetration and somehow make it feel weird rather than sexy also takes talent.
- 52:16Maria Pena: Yeah, yeah.
- 52:17Tad Eggleston: So happy with her.
- 52:19Tad Eggleston: her…
- 52:20Tad Eggleston: her body position there shows that, like, maybe not there yet. By the next panel, it's like, she's closed her eyes, and she's wherever she needs to be that she's enjoying herself, but she doesn't actually look like she's enjoying herself yet.
- 52:34Maria Pena: No, she's not really that happy. I think she's, I don't think she looks happy at all, yeah.
- 52:39Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 52:40Maria Pena: Oof.
- 52:45Maria Pena: So then… This bit, I mean, that's, petra?
- 52:51Maria Pena: Dressed as a…
- 52:52Marisol: In disguise again.
- 52:54Maria Pena: in disguise.
- 52:55Tad Eggleston: Oh, yeah, that's right.
- 52:57Maria Pena: Which was a kind of, you know, because she doesn't approve of people, and it's… Right.
- 53:05Tad Eggleston: Right?
- 53:06Maria Pena: And then… Which is a…
- 53:12Maria Pena: Yeah, foreshadowing what's gonna happen in the next few days.
- 53:17Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 53:19Maria Pena: Which is panic.
- 53:20Maria Pena: Took me by surprise again.
- 53:23Marisol: Oh yeah, same.
- 53:26Tad Eggleston: Don't hurt yourself writing your book too hard.
- 53:33Maria Pena: Yeah, so… So, failure is, clapping, clicking away, and then… He has a heart attack.
- 53:44Maria Pena: And then Venus… sorry, Petra gets a phone call, and… Oh, no, people!
- 53:51Maria Pena: What happened to people? He's pretending to not know, because she must have done it.
- 53:57Maria Pena: So I guess she's attacked people.
- 54:01Maria Pena: Hello.
- 54:03Maria Pena: I was like, what? What?
- 54:07Tad Eggleston: Do be continued.
- 54:09Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 54:10Marisol: Mute.
- 54:12Maria Pena: Yeah, that would suck.
- 54:14Maria Pena: That ended in a very dark place.
- 54:18Marisol: Oh, yeah.
- 54:20Maria Pena: the back cover.
- 54:21Marisol: A beautiful back cover.
- 54:23Tad Eggleston: That's a… fantastic.
- 54:25Tad Eggleston: Affiliate company.
- 54:26Maria Pena: Farewell. Farewell, that covers, isn't it? Like…
- 54:31Tad Eggleston: You know that a failure didn't make it out of the heart attack.
- 54:34Maria Pena: Maybe.
- 54:36Tad Eggleston: We'll find out.
- 54:36Marisol: Maybe.
- 54:39Tad Eggleston: We'll find out.
- 54:42Tad Eggleston: So… Yeah. Do we want to start with Beto or Jaime?
- 54:48Maria Pena: Yeah, that's… well, let's, let's, stay with Beto.
- 54:53Maria Pena: Or… Let's see if there's any paddles here…
- 55:00Marisol: Hmm.
- 55:07Maria Pena: I think the Lover Rockets had some really good bet, okay.
- 55:12Tad Eggleston: It definitely did.
- 55:13Maria Pena: Although, I do like the panel above the trees and people sitting in a tree, because I love that.
- 55:22Marisol: Yeah.
- 55:23Maria Pena: Right.
- 55:25Maria Pena: You will.
- 55:26Tad Eggleston: Oh, that is good. Yeah, yeah.
- 55:28Maria Pena: That's a really nice panel.
- 55:30Marisol: Yeah.
- 55:32Maria Pena: The two girls that were each other.
- 55:37Maria Pena: Yeah, oh, I'm a bit gutted about Ophelia, I gotta say.
- 55:46Tad Eggleston: I'm gonna go with this, this…
- 55:49Tad Eggleston: I feel like this… this panel at the of,
- 55:55Tad Eggleston: At the Me for the Unknown.
- 56:01Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 56:01Tad Eggleston: There's, like, some serious foreshadowing all in one…
- 56:08Tad Eggleston: So I think that's…
- 56:13Tad Eggleston: I just… I like how, like, they're on the boat, out at sea, you can see the water, and then the horizon is… or they might be on a bench, I can't tell.
- 56:23Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 56:24Tad Eggleston: They might be at a bench at the airport.
- 56:27Tad Eggleston: or… or Seaport, or they might be… Because it's not… Completely clear.
- 56:34Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 56:35Marisol: Right.
- 56:36Tad Eggleston: They could be standing, or they could be sitting. If they're sitting, they're on a bench. If they're standing, you're seeing the water behind them.
- 56:43Tad Eggleston: and Dad's in the sky, and, like, it doesn't even really matter which, because, like, it's…
- 56:52Tad Eggleston: it's kind of showing you that Dad is on the boat in, like, the Amazon, clutching…
- 57:01Tad Eggleston: The money, and walking away from his family, etc.
- 57:07Tad Eggleston: And again, I mean, we got the hint.
- 57:11Tad Eggleston: that… that Grandpa wasn't all a good guy, because, like.
- 57:15Tad Eggleston: When she was going around back, she saw him… Punch… punch your mom?
- 57:21Maria Pena: Nope.
- 57:21Tad Eggleston: But here, I mean, if he doesn't look like a mafia Don.
- 57:26Maria Pena: Yeah, I know.
- 57:27Marisol: No, absolutely.
- 57:29Tad Eggleston: You know, and…
- 57:31Marisol: The whole vibe.
- 57:33Tad Eggleston: Is clearly not…
- 57:34Marisol: Dumb, but also clearly…
- 57:37Tad Eggleston: I mean, I'm still curious as to why she's part of the going after him.
- 57:45Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 57:45Tad Eggleston: You know, because what we'd seen before was her arguing about whether or not she was headed to Europe for the summer.
- 57:51Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 57:55Tad Eggleston: And now she's not headed to Europe, she's headed to South America to find her dad, but also still reading Twit.
- 58:04Tad Eggleston: So, yeah.
- 58:08Tad Eggleston: That's… That's my beddo panel.
- 58:13Maria Pena: Okay.
- 58:16Maria Pena: Jaime panels.
- 58:18Marisol: Hmm.
- 58:19Maria Pena: Oh, so many.
- 58:20Tad Eggleston: Well, is Marisol… is Marisol chosen a Beto panel? Are you… are you going with the…
- 58:25Maria Pena: Oh.
- 58:26Tad Eggleston: Are you good?
- 58:26Marisol: I…
- 58:27Tad Eggleston: pepo and Fritz sitting in a tree?
- 58:33Marisol: I'm taking mine from… I don't remember what page it is, where all the…
- 58:40Marisol: the girls, Maricela, Doralis, and Guadalupe, are there together with Ophelia.
- 58:48Maria Pena: I am.
- 58:52Marisol: It's back a little bit, I think, here.
- 58:54Tad Eggleston: Give me a second.
- 59:03Tad Eggleston: Sorry, I'm typing really fast.
- 59:07Marisol: Really fast. All good.
- 59:09Tad Eggleston: Not actually that fast.
- 59:16Tad Eggleston: So… here?
- 59:22Marisol: It's loading from my end. There we go. Yep, that middle panel right there, where they're all together.
- 59:30Marisol: And I just thought it was… it was nice that, like, even though.
- 59:33Tad Eggleston: It is.
- 59:34Marisol: Maricela is not.
- 59:35Tad Eggleston: All with their surrogate law.
- 59:37Marisol: her mother, she's… Yeah, she's still…
- 59:39Tad Eggleston: Because among other things, you know that for Maricel, it's been really, really hard.
- 59:45Tad Eggleston: Being away from Australia.
- 59:49Tad Eggleston: Whatever she thinks about being away from her mom, being away from Ophelia has been… Really difficult for her.
- 59:58Marisol: And she's still on good terms with her own sisters.
- 1:00:02Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 1:00:09Marisol: Yeah, I just really like this middle panel here.
- 1:00:13Maria Pena: Okay.
- 1:00:15Tad Eggleston: Alright.
- 1:00:18Tad Eggleston: So… For me and Jaime, it's… it's that Maggie image at the beginning.
- 1:00:27Marisol: Yes.
- 1:00:27Maria Pena: Lovely.
- 1:00:28Marisol: That's gonna be mine, too.
- 1:00:30Tad Eggleston: This is… I miss Maggie.
- 1:00:33Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I mean, that too.
- 1:00:36Marisol: That's a fantastic panel for her.
- 1:00:39Tad Eggleston: I was happy.
- 1:00:40Marisol: and…
- 1:00:41Tad Eggleston: And I think they know it, because that's been the cover of a couple of things now.
- 1:00:48Tad Eggleston: That's just such… Such a great Maggie panel.
- 1:00:59Maria Pena: Yep.
- 1:01:01Maria Pena: Wow.
- 1:01:05Maria Pena: I think my one is that one with EZ's hair, blending into that shadow coming off the… Yeah.
- 1:01:16Maria Pena: I love that, I just… I love that. Oh, I mean, that whole sequence before is fantastic, like, you know, like, I love… I usually go for one, but it was like, I can't pick one of those, they're all…
- 1:01:29Maria Pena: So, just… I like that quiet moment, and she's like, okay, okay.
- 1:01:35Maria Pena: The way Easy looks so creepy.
- 1:01:41Marisol: Izzy does creepy effortlessly.
- 1:01:44Tad Eggleston: cash.
- 1:01:45Tad Eggleston: It's like her defining feature.
- 1:01:48Marisol: Yeah.
- 1:01:49Maria Pena: Yeah, so she's looking especially witchy, you know.
- 1:01:55Maria Pena: Oh, I love that one, yeah.
- 1:01:57Maria Pena: Well, you should I just saw that other one with the… with the… when she's… when… anyway.
- 1:02:03Maria Pena: Maggie's sleeping in the couch.
- 1:02:06Maria Pena: Yeah. So anyway, okay.
- 1:02:09Marisol: There we go.
- 1:02:10Maria Pena: Yep.
- 1:02:12Tad Eggleston: The OKK?
- 1:02:13Maria Pena: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:02:14Tad Eggleston: Or the… Okay.
- 1:02:17Maria Pena: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:02:19Maria Pena: I might mention the other one as a sort of thing to look at, because it's… it's quite cute.
- 1:02:30Maria Pena: What is that?
- 1:02:37Tad Eggleston: I think Maricel agreed with me on this one.
- 1:02:40Marisol: Yeah, we had the same one.
- 1:02:42Tad Eggleston: We both, we both went with the opening Maggie.
- 1:02:45Maria Pena: Can I mention then…
- 1:02:49Maria Pena: Oh.
- 1:02:50Tad Eggleston: Absolutely. And then, the one where Maggie's on the sofa.
- 1:02:54Maria Pena: And you can see this shadow above the sofa, and it looks like, you know.
- 1:02:59Tad Eggleston: I hope you don't mind if I sleep way over here on this nice, safe couch. Izzy?
- 1:03:05Marisol: Yep.
- 1:03:06Maria Pena: Thank you very much.
- 1:03:08Maria Pena: And yeah, I love that.
- 1:03:11Tad Eggleston: There's so many good panels.
- 1:03:13Marisol: System.
- 1:03:14Tad Eggleston: Well, I mean, something… Sometimes when I read comics, I literally clip the panels
- 1:03:21Tad Eggleston: that I love the most as I go.
- 1:03:26Tad Eggleston: And that can be dangerous with Jaime, because I wind up literally just, like, clipping every panel.
- 1:03:34Tad Eggleston: They're so good.
- 1:03:35Marisol: Good!
- 1:03:36Tad Eggleston: There are so many Jaime panels that I would happily frame and put on my wall, or put on a t-shirt.
- 1:03:42Tad Eggleston: Make into a sticker, or, like…
- 1:03:46Marisol: Hell yeah.
- 1:03:47Tad Eggleston: like, one of the geniuses of Jaime Hernandez is that, like, not only is he a Brilliant storyteller.
- 1:03:57Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 1:03:58Tad Eggleston: But almost every panel is also its own work of art.
- 1:04:05Marisol: Yeah.
- 1:04:07Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 1:04:08Maria Pena: They were beautifully designed.
- 1:04:13Maria Pena: Perfect.
- 1:04:13Tad Eggleston: So…
- 1:04:14Maria Pena: We know that.
- 1:04:14Tad Eggleston: Every page is its own work of art, but, like, literally all…
- 1:04:18Maria Pena: space.
- 1:04:19Tad Eggleston: panel.
- 1:04:20Maria Pena: That first page.
- 1:04:21Tad Eggleston: Smart.
- 1:04:22Maria Pena: Yeah, you know, that panel bottom left.
- 1:04:25Marisol: Yeah.
- 1:04:26Maria Pena: Merry Christmas. I mean, I love that.
- 1:04:28Tad Eggleston: Yeah!
- 1:04:30Maria Pena: You know.
- 1:04:32Marisol: Going in from the open door.
- 1:04:35Tad Eggleston: I mean, seriously, if… I… I could… I could…
- 1:04:41Tad Eggleston: decorate a very large house using exclusively Jaime Hernandez panels.
- 1:04:50Tad Eggleston: I don't doubt that. Right? Make them, like, 8.5 by 11…
- 1:04:57Tad Eggleston: Like, the way some people fill their walls with family pictures, you could do it with Jaime panels. You wouldn't even have to put them in any particular order. You wouldn't have to make it so you could read the story going through.
- 1:05:11Maria Pena: No.
- 1:05:12Tad Eggleston: Fill your entire house with just his panels.
- 1:05:16Tad Eggleston: And nobody would think that, oh my god, what repetitive decor.
- 1:05:20Tad Eggleston: It'd be like, oh my god, that's amazing. Is that the same artist as that one? Oh, it is! Wow!
- 1:05:26Marisol: Yeah.
- 1:05:31Marisol: Just beautifully done. Beautiful artwork.
- 1:05:37Tad Eggleston: I, like, as we're flipping through, I just… the… the…
- 1:05:43Tad Eggleston: you know, I think we talked about Maggie and Hopi getting it on. How good is this panel where they get it off?
- 1:05:51Marisol: Thank you.
- 1:05:53Tad Eggleston: Julie Rhee's precious little television show. Julie Rhee!
- 1:05:59Tad Eggleston: Maggie's just sitting out there.
- 1:06:00Maria Pena: Wait a minute.
- 1:06:02Tad Eggleston: I liked this better a minute ago.
- 1:06:10Tad Eggleston: Weren't you going down on me? That… that was… that was nicer than,
- 1:06:16Tad Eggleston: I hadn't used her name yet.
- 1:06:20Marisol: We're doing great, 30 seconds ago, and then…
- 1:06:23Marisol: And I opened… I baked that mouth, and now we're here.
- 1:06:27Tad Eggleston: Yeah…
- 1:06:30Marisol: Oh, man.
- 1:06:32Maria Pena: Great stuff.
- 1:06:34Tad Eggleston: And I love the whole,
- 1:06:38Tad Eggleston: I have to go to the back for a minute. I gotta pee.
- 1:06:42Tad Eggleston: And then they're just there, and they both know that that's happening. It's like…
- 1:06:46Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 1:06:47Tad Eggleston: I mean, in some ways, because that's, like, That's… that's such the… the…
- 1:06:57Tad Eggleston: Like, you're so used to that, with the hot… hot mail bartender, and the…
- 1:07:04Tad Eggleston: The… the… the girl that's swooning over him, that, like, switching it to have it be…
- 1:07:11Tad Eggleston: you know, the cool eyepatched Hopi, which I want to say the eyepatches… we learned that she has something, but it's, like, not a permanent thing.
- 1:07:21Tad Eggleston: Did she have some sort of surgery?
- 1:07:23Tad Eggleston: didn't we discover that, like, last issue? Well, no, because there wasn't a last issue. Way back in, like.
- 1:07:33Tad Eggleston: God, what was after… What did we read after, oh, and Penny Century.
- 1:07:43Tad Eggleston: I think this… I think, I feel like Penny at… er, not Penny, hopi at the Bar started in Penny Century, and there's some story behind that eyepatch. But overall, it just looks like Hopi being cool.
- 1:07:57Tad Eggleston: You know.
- 1:07:58Marisol: That's wondering what the deal with the eyepatch was.
- 1:08:01Tad Eggleston: I feel like she got poked in the eye, or got glass in her eye in some bar fight or something, is the story that got told.
- 1:08:10Maria Pena: Right.
- 1:08:11Marisol: Mmm.
- 1:08:11Tad Eggleston: Like, we read it.
- 1:08:12Marisol: Also, I'm just noticing. Months ago?
- 1:08:21Tad Eggleston: So, I don't know.
- 1:08:23Marisol: Hmm.
- 1:08:24Maria Pena: I don't know, I can't remember.
- 1:08:28Tad Eggleston: So… Yeah.
- 1:08:32Maria Pena: I think because we…
- 1:08:34Marisol: No idea.
- 1:08:36Maria Pena: We jumped from, you know, time and space, and back and forth, and…
- 1:08:43Marisol: Well, I also think, like, that panel there, when Maggie's measuring Izzy to see if she's shrunk or grown.
- 1:08:52Tad Eggleston: Did she shrink? Did she grow?
- 1:08:53Marisol: He just looks like a fucking corpse.
- 1:08:58Maria Pena: Oh, for that matter.
- 1:08:59Tad Eggleston: I love the…
- 1:09:02Tad Eggleston: Let me put the sheets back on the bed. They're still pretty clean. I was gonna do laundry, but…
- 1:09:08Tad Eggleston: Okay, I guess we don't have to have sheets.
- 1:09:15Maria Pena: Easy, it's already off, you know…
- 1:09:17Tad Eggleston: Oh, cool.
- 1:09:17Maria Pena: Leaving.
- 1:09:18Marisol: You are.
- 1:09:19Tad Eggleston: But that also makes the measuring scene so much better, because you've got the bare mattress under Izzy.
- 1:09:26Maria Pena: Yeah, it's just…
- 1:09:27Marisol: Is he just having laid down on her back.
- 1:09:29Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 1:09:30Marisol: Not moved at all.
- 1:09:30Tad Eggleston: Right, right.
- 1:09:32Maria Pena: She's… she's, very deeply asleep.
- 1:09:38Marisol: I feel like every time we see Izzy, she is more and more… Ghoulish-looking.
- 1:09:45Maria Pena: Mmm.
- 1:09:46Tad Eggleston: and…
- 1:09:46Marisol: It's just very gaunt and… lanky.
- 1:09:50Tad Eggleston: Nam.
- 1:09:51Maria Pena: Yeah, well, he's… she's not a well woman, you know, is he?
- 1:09:56Marisol: No.
- 1:09:58Maria Pena: I think she forgets to eat, and, you know…
- 1:10:02Tad Eggleston: I think she forgets a lot of things.
- 1:10:05Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 1:10:08Tad Eggleston: And I also think she can't forget a lot of things.
- 1:10:12Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 1:10:12Maria Pena: Excellent.
- 1:10:13Marisol: part of the problem.
- 1:10:15Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 1:10:17Tad Eggleston: So glad to have Lovin' Rockets back.
- 1:10:22Tad Eggleston: I was living rockets.
- 1:10:23Tad Eggleston: It, like, rejuvenates me for… the next… .
- 1:10:29Maria Pena: 24 hours of the.
- 1:10:31Tad Eggleston: No, no.
- 1:10:32Tad Eggleston: I was just thinking, well, yeah, I meant the next, right now, I think it's 42 issues.
- 1:10:40Tad Eggleston: 19… 19 more Love & Rockets, 8 news stories, and I think we have 15.
- 1:10:48Maria Pena: Don't make me do math.
- 1:10:51Tad Eggleston: That's why I'm the one.
- 1:10:52Marisol: I really didn't matter.
- 1:10:53Tad Eggleston: Oh, that's Saturday.
- 1:10:55Marisol: On a Saturday.
- 1:10:58Tad Eggleston: Yeah, but I'm autistic, I like math. I mean, I don't… I don't like math class, I hate math class, but I have…
- 1:11:05Tad Eggleston: come to… to… to realize that I… that I like.
- 1:11:11Marisol: Hmm.
- 1:11:15Tad Eggleston: Oh, they're also.
- 1:11:16Marisol: I'll let you do the math.
- 1:11:17Tad Eggleston: original Locas.
- 1:11:21Tad Eggleston: Which is the… the… the… it's just the Maggie and Hopi stories from, like, the first 50?
- 1:11:29Tad Eggleston: So that's coming out in January.
- 1:11:33Tad Eggleston: Good.
- 1:11:38Tad Eggleston: Mmm, is 13 the most recent? No, no, there's 15. Yeah.
- 1:11:47Tad Eggleston: So… Number 15 came out in… no, that's May of 24.
- 1:11:55Marisol: I don't…
- 1:11:57Tad Eggleston: So maybe we're up to 16.
- 1:12:00Tad Eggleston: Gotta be.
- 1:12:02Tad Eggleston: I don't think they're coming out THAT rarely.
- 1:12:09Tad Eggleston: Though, actually… that's the one that's coming up… No.
- 1:12:16Tad Eggleston: Most recently by… Release date, I don't know. Something like that. We'll figure it out as we go.
- 1:12:25Tad Eggleston: All sorts of stuff, and…
- 1:12:28Marisol: Yeah.
- 1:12:31Marisol: More fun stuff to look forward to now.
- 1:12:34Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 1:12:36Tad Eggleston: And then more fun stuff, and then more fun stuff, and then…
- 1:12:40Tad Eggleston: When we actually manage to have read all of it, then we get to sit back and go, do we wanna… do we wanna read it all in a different way, where we read the stories together, rather than…
- 1:12:49Tad Eggleston: Separate, like, because some of them are definitely a different experience when you read them like, all of…
- 1:12:58Tad Eggleston: human diastrophism.
- 1:13:00Tad Eggleston: like, together.
- 1:13:01Marisol: In one chunk.
- 1:13:03Marisol: Sprinkles.
- 1:13:03Tad Eggleston: Oh, God.
- 1:13:03Marisol: other issues.
- 1:13:05Tad Eggleston: Julio's Day, in particular, very different reading.
- 1:13:10Tad Eggleston: When you read it as a graphic novel.
- 1:13:14Marisol: That'd be a good idea.
- 1:13:15Tad Eggleston: So, that's how we can keep the Love & Rockets Book Club going, even after we run out of Love & Rockets, is we'll start the Love & Rockets reread in a different way.
- 1:13:27Marisol: Let's do the.
- 1:13:28Tad Eggleston: Complete stuff.
- 1:13:29Marisol: stories.
- 1:13:29Tad Eggleston: There are so many different ways to read it, too, that, like…
- 1:13:33Tad Eggleston: You know, we can keep this going for a while, and by the time… by the time we've done all the different ways, we'll be ready to go single issue again.
- 1:13:43Maria Pena: Yeah, when you kicked…
- 1:13:46Marisol: Oh, man.
- 1:13:47Tad Eggleston: I mean, all of the other… all of the other book clubs…
- 1:13:51Tad Eggleston: Except Heavy Metal, where there's just so many of them that it's gonna be a long time before we actually hit them all. All the other book clubs that I have going, there's a part of me that's like, okay, when we hit the end of this.
- 1:14:03Tad Eggleston: Like, what do we want to morph to? Like, Saga, and you miss Saga, Marisol.
- 1:14:09Marisol: Damn, it's.
- 1:14:09Tad Eggleston: I sent out the email reminder, but I forgot to text you individually. The bigger the group is, the less likely I am to send out an individual text, so pay attention to your emails.
- 1:14:20Marisol: I'm working on it.
- 1:14:24Tad Eggleston: I pay attention to my Google Calendar, not always my email.
- 1:14:28Marisol: fortunately.
- 1:14:28Tad Eggleston: Well, you know what? I send the Google Calendar invite, so all you have to do is say yes, and it'll be on your Google Calendar.
- 1:14:35Marisol: Yeah, it should be there.
- 1:14:37Tad Eggleston: Right. I'll have to…
- 1:14:39Marisol: I'll have to see, because I don't know why I missed that last one. Yeah. I was expecting it, and I was excited for it, and then I don't know if just… I accidentally…
- 1:14:48Marisol: Threw away the reminder that it gave me.
- 1:14:50Tad Eggleston: Yeah, who knows? Who knows?
- 1:14:52Marisol: to the.
- 1:14:53Tad Eggleston: But yeah.
- 1:14:54Tad Eggleston: where I was really going is, like, if the Saga Book Club enjoys itself, like, after 13 volumes, we gotta figure out something else. Like…
- 1:15:02Marisol: Yeah.
- 1:15:03Tad Eggleston: Maybe 14 volumes, because, like, they'll continue writing while we're going, but, like.
- 1:15:10Tad Eggleston: you know, the Jack Kirby book club. After X number of volumes, we gotta figure out something else, you know?
- 1:15:18Marisol: Yeah.
- 1:15:18Tad Eggleston: That sort of thing. I feel like the Love & Rockets Book Club, even once we've caught up, we can still find ways to just explore Love and Rockets in a different way every week.
- 1:15:31Marisol: Oh, absolutely.
- 1:15:31Tad Eggleston: For a long, long, long, long time.
- 1:15:35Maria Pena: We still get ahead of ourselves, we still got our feet to go, so…
- 1:15:38Tad Eggleston: Yeah, we still got a year before it becomes an issue, so maybe you guys will decide you hate me by then, but I hope not.
- 1:15:45Maria Pena: No, I didn't.
- 1:15:47Tad Eggleston: Who doesn't.
- 1:15:48Marisol: the future holds.
- 1:15:49Tad Eggleston: Please don't… please don't hold you guys deciding you hate me. I don't, I don't want that as.
- 1:15:54Marisol: No.
- 1:15:56Maria Pena: Alright.
- 1:15:57Tad Eggleston: For Maria.
- 1:15:58Tad Eggleston: And Marisol, this has been the Love & Rockets Book Club on 22 panels. We will see you after the next page.
