- 0:02Speaker 1: In the winter of twenty twenty in Fort Valley, Georgia, University,
- 0:06Speaker 1: senior Anitra gun was looking forward to graduating while still
- 0:11Speaker 1: studying and working part time. The thoughtful and hard working
- 0:14Speaker 1: twenty three year old was lighting up job interviews and
- 0:17Speaker 1: celebrating milestones with friends. All of this came to an
- 0:21Speaker 1: abrupt end on Valentine's Day when friends began reporting strange
- 0:25Speaker 1: messages received from A Nietra's phone, followed by silence. Her
- 0:31Speaker 1: distressed father rushed from Atlanta while a task force was
- 0:34Speaker 1: formed to search for her. The sheriff declared that no
- 0:38Speaker 1: stone would be left unturned as they put together all
- 0:41Speaker 1: the pieces and sought justice for a Nietra gun.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Hi.
- 0:50Speaker 1: There, I'm Kevin, and welcome to Just Thought Lounge. Today's
- 0:54Speaker 1: case is about a murder in Georgia just a few
- 0:56Speaker 1: years ago that shook the local community to the core.
- 1:00Speaker 1: It's a cautionary tale, one that resonates with many who
- 1:04Speaker 1: have seen these warning signs before. Let's take a look.
- 1:21Speaker 1: In the winter of twenty twenty, twenty three year old
- 1:24Speaker 1: Anitra Gunn was a senior at Fort Valley State University
- 1:28Speaker 1: in Fort Valley, Georgia. She was a graduate of West
- 1:32Speaker 1: Lake High School in Atlanta. After the death of her
- 1:35Speaker 1: mother when she was still a child, Anetra and her
- 1:38Speaker 1: younger brother had been raised by their father, Christopher Gunn.
- 1:43Speaker 1: In twenty sixteen, Anietra had relocated to Fort Valley to
- 1:47Speaker 1: study agriculture at FVSU. Between full time study and a
- 1:52Speaker 1: part time job as a server at eighteen thirty six
- 1:55Speaker 1: restaurant in Lounge, Anitra kept busy. The fun loving and
- 2:00Speaker 1: kind hearted senior also maintained an active social life, and
- 2:05Speaker 1: she was always in contact with her family, including her
- 2:08Speaker 1: father back in Atlanta. On the morning of February fourteenth,
- 2:14Speaker 1: Valentine's Day, a Nietra's best friend, Sierra Stuart, awoke late
- 2:18Speaker 1: to a series of messages from her friend. The exchange
- 2:22Speaker 1: began pleasantly. They sent happy Valentine's Day greetings, but then
- 2:27Speaker 1: Sierra began to receive a few uncharacteristic messages. Texts from
- 2:31Speaker 1: her phone stated that she was looking to hook up
- 2:34Speaker 1: with someone she just called dude. A Nietra was known
- 2:38Speaker 1: to be in only one relationship and on again and
- 2:41Speaker 1: off again romance with twenty two year old U S
- 2:43Speaker 1: Army sergeant to Marcus Little, but her message implied it
- 2:48Speaker 1: was someone else that she was about to meet up with.
- 2:51Speaker 1: Sierra was supportive of her friend, and she was not
- 2:54Speaker 1: a fan of DeMarcus Little. He was trouble and their
- 2:58Speaker 1: relationship was unstable. Over the next few hours, Sierra would
- 3:03Speaker 1: grow increasingly more concerned for Anitra. By midday, she had
- 3:07Speaker 1: been contacted by a mutual friend named David Howard. She
- 3:11Speaker 1: knew him as Scout. Had she heard from Anetra. Scoot
- 3:15Speaker 1: asked he had also been receiving strange messages from her
- 3:19Speaker 1: that morning, and De Marcus claimed he was no longer
- 3:22Speaker 1: with her and had no idea where she was. Something
- 3:26Speaker 1: was not right. Sierra phoned Christopher Gunn in Atlanta before
- 3:35Speaker 1: he set out from Atlanta. Christopher Gunn requested a check
- 3:38Speaker 1: on his daughter's home on West Church Street. Fort Valley
- 3:42Speaker 1: Police found no one at the house. Anitra's car, a
- 3:45Speaker 1: twenty thirteen white Chevy Cruise, was also missing. By that time,
- 3:50Speaker 1: the strange messages from Anitra's phone had ceased. They began
- 3:54Speaker 1: with texts to Scoot around eight thirty a m. Messages
- 3:58Speaker 1: to Sierra about the unknown man. Between ten and eleven
- 4:01Speaker 1: am and then the phone went quiet. Messages from concerned
- 4:06Speaker 1: family and friends came in, but no responses were received.
- 4:11Speaker 1: When Christopher arrived in Fort Valley, he formally filed a
- 4:14Speaker 1: missing person's report. A task force was formed, consisting of
- 4:18Speaker 1: the Fort Valley Police, the Peach County Sheriffs, and the
- 4:22Speaker 1: GBI the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Anietra's last confirmed location
- 4:28Speaker 1: was the house of her boyfriend's aunt on Chestnut Hill Road.
- 4:32Speaker 1: The two had spent the night of February thirteenth at
- 4:35Speaker 1: the house. He was the last person to see Anetra
- 4:38Speaker 1: before she disappeared. Due to this, DeMarcus Little became a
- 4:43Speaker 1: suspect to the media and the public immediately.
- 4:48Speaker 3: This is the last place she was seeing Thursday night,
- 4:51Speaker 3: about eleven thirty. The aunt confirmed she was here with
- 4:55Speaker 3: a boyfriend. This last place she was seeing. So what
- 4:59Speaker 3: we're doing today is basically we're fixing searchs his house
- 5:03Speaker 3: and make sure there's nothing there that we need to see,
- 5:07Speaker 3: and we're just going to start from here and work
- 5:09Speaker 3: our way out, you know. And now you know, Who've
- 5:13Speaker 3: got the GSP helicopter flying the woods just looking for
- 5:18Speaker 3: anything we've found Right now inbody even newer as the
- 5:23Speaker 3: person person interest until we were kind of will in
- 5:27Speaker 3: that way as down has the boyfriend Ben question, Yes, ma'am,
- 5:32Speaker 3: she's not in custody.
- 5:33Speaker 4: Is it number?
- 5:37Speaker 1: The night before she went missing, Anitra attended a house
- 5:39Speaker 1: party with a couple of girlfriends. When she left at
- 5:43Speaker 1: roughly eleven pm. However, she did so with one of
- 5:46Speaker 1: her girlfriends, Tracy King, as well as her sometimes boyfriend
- 5:50Speaker 1: DeMarcus Little and his good friend jayvon Abram. The group
- 5:55Speaker 1: traveled to Demarcus's home for a few hours. At some
- 5:59Speaker 1: time past two am, Javon dropped a Nietra and DeMarcus
- 6:03Speaker 1: off at her house on West Church Street so that
- 6:06Speaker 1: she could retrieve her car. The couple separated from their
- 6:10Speaker 1: other friends at that point and went to a waffle house. Afterwards,
- 6:14Speaker 1: they traveled back to the house on Chestnut to stay
- 6:17Speaker 1: the night. DeMarcus told police that he last saw Anitra
- 6:21Speaker 1: leaving at about eleven thirty am. The next day, She
- 6:25Speaker 1: told him that she had a job interview, so he
- 6:28Speaker 1: assumed that was her destination when she left. Anitra did
- 6:32Speaker 1: have an interview scheduled that day at nine thirty am.
- 6:36Speaker 1: Had she left the house. When DeMarcus claimed she had,
- 6:39Speaker 1: she would have already been two hours late. Twenty two
- 6:44Speaker 1: year old to Marcus Little was picked up outside of
- 6:46Speaker 1: the house and brought in for questioning. His vehicle, a
- 6:50Speaker 1: twenty nineteen black Toyota Corolla with red pinstripes, was towed
- 6:54Speaker 1: off the property for a forensic examination. DeMarcus was an
- 7:03Speaker 1: Army sergeant who had grown up in Fort Valley. He
- 7:06Speaker 1: joined the Army back in twenty sixteen, but in December
- 7:09Speaker 1: twenty nineteen had moved to Fort Eisenhower, at the time
- 7:13Speaker 1: known as Fort Gordon in Augusta. There he worked as
- 7:17Speaker 1: a unit supply specialist. He and a Nietra had been
- 7:21Speaker 1: an item for some time. At first, it had seemed
- 7:25Speaker 1: to be a great match. DeMarcus, just like a Netra,
- 7:29Speaker 1: had lost his mother when he was young. He was
- 7:32Speaker 1: raised by his father and stepmother. He had two sisters
- 7:36Speaker 1: whom he adored, and a generally close knit family to describe.
- 7:43Speaker 4: The win.
- 7:47Speaker 1: With a burgeoning career in the military, DeMarcus appeared on
- 7:51Speaker 1: paper to be a great catch, But as investigators began
- 7:55Speaker 1: speaking with those closest to Anetra, they learned that the
- 7:59Speaker 1: relationship had been a toxic one for months. This view
- 8:03Speaker 1: was not shared by those close to DeMarcus.
- 8:07Speaker 5: Because they said they don't know where it's no, I
- 8:10Speaker 5: got it. He's innocent, Yes, no doubt.
- 8:18Speaker 4: We miss a Fay very closely like Sugar.
- 8:22Speaker 6: She was just like at least.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Red Aniitri's twenty thirteen white Chevy Cruise was located only
- 8:29Speaker 1: a few blocks away from her house, its front bumper missing.
- 8:34Speaker 1: There was mud and other debris stuck to the tires.
- 8:37Speaker 1: Just the day before, Javon had collected his friend to
- 8:40Speaker 1: Marcus from a location nearby and had pointed out the
- 8:43Speaker 1: car to him. Isn't that Anitra's car, he asked. DeMarcus
- 8:47Speaker 1: blew him off. Of course it wasn't, he said. Her
- 8:51Speaker 1: wallet and keys were inside the vehicle. Curiously, her cell
- 8:55Speaker 1: phone was not. Processing of the car found Demarcus's finger
- 9:00Speaker 1: and pomp prints inside and on the trunk. An examination
- 9:04Speaker 1: of his vehicle similarly returned to DNA from Anitra. Given
- 9:09Speaker 1: that the two had been romantically linked for months, these
- 9:12Speaker 1: results were not surprising. What was unexpected was Demarcus's claim,
- 9:18Speaker 1: made twenty four hours into the search for his ex girlfriend,
- 9:22Speaker 1: that he just remembered that Anitra had accidentally shared her
- 9:26Speaker 1: phone location with him the day before. He said her
- 9:30Speaker 1: device had pinged not far from her home on West
- 9:33Speaker 1: Church It showed at a location on South Camellia Boulevard.
- 9:38Speaker 1: When Officer Whitehead of the Fort Valley Police checked his
- 9:42Speaker 1: device for this information, however, he found that was not
- 9:46Speaker 1: the case. Her phone had actually pinged roughly five minutes
- 9:50Speaker 1: further south of Kamelia Road on Carver Drive. There, tucked
- 9:55Speaker 1: into the end of a drainage pipe, police retrieved Anitra's
- 9:59Speaker 1: so The county, City and State Task Force continued their search,
- 10:06Speaker 1: spanning from Chestnut Drive through rain and shine. When the
- 10:10Speaker 1: weather turned rough, they kept the helicopters out of the air,
- 10:14Speaker 1: but deputies continued to navigate dense areas of woodland on
- 10:18Speaker 1: the ground. A Peach County Sheriff's deputy was patrolling the
- 10:22Speaker 1: area when he spotted a path leading off of the
- 10:25Speaker 1: main roadway which appeared to have been disturbed by a
- 10:28Speaker 1: vehicle driving down it towards the trees. He got out
- 10:32Speaker 1: of his car and explored the path on foot. A
- 10:36Speaker 1: few minutes into the walk, there were more indications of
- 10:39Speaker 1: a vehicle swiping nearby trees and damaging the vegetation. Under
- 10:44Speaker 1: a light covering of tree limbs and other brush, the
- 10:47Speaker 1: deputy discovered the body of a young woman. It had
- 10:51Speaker 1: been poorly concealed. Amongst the trees. Near to the deceased
- 10:57Speaker 1: were damaged car parts, namely part of a bumper from
- 11:01Speaker 1: what appeared to be a twenty thirteen weight Chevy Cruise.
- 11:07Speaker 3: Today, at three nineteen, deputies and members of the task
- 11:12Speaker 3: force were out riding. Because of the weather, we couldn't
- 11:14Speaker 3: get the helicopter up, so they were just riding looking.
- 11:19Speaker 3: We had an idea of the bushes and sticks that
- 11:23Speaker 3: were into the front of the grill of her car,
- 11:27Speaker 3: so the deputies were kind of looking for those areas.
- 11:31Speaker 3: The area he found her at he saw something similar
- 11:34Speaker 3: a little roadway going down into the woods. Rode down
- 11:38Speaker 3: into the car wouldn't go anymore because of the rain.
- 11:41Speaker 3: About one hundred and fifty yards off the roadway, he
- 11:45Speaker 3: found the piece of the car, part of the car
- 11:48Speaker 3: piece that we've been looking for. Found this gun laying
- 11:53Speaker 3: very close to part of that front bump. I think
- 12:00Speaker 3: it's pretty common sense to how person of interest is.
- 12:03Speaker 3: Can you say it?
- 12:04Speaker 1: Though?
- 12:04Speaker 3: I was love just a boyfriend. We've talked to him
- 12:07Speaker 3: three times.
- 12:11Speaker 1: An autopsy would find that Anitra had been strangled. There
- 12:15Speaker 1: were also indications that she had been struck at least
- 12:18Speaker 1: once in the head, and that her body had likely
- 12:21Speaker 1: been dragged into the position where she was found. On Wednesday,
- 12:27Speaker 1: February nineteenth, only a few days after Anitra was located,
- 12:32Speaker 1: DeMarcus Little was arrested. However, he was not at that
- 12:36Speaker 1: stage charged with murder. Property was damaged at Anitra's house
- 12:41Speaker 1: roughly two weeks before she was killed. It was on
- 12:44Speaker 1: this charge that he was arraigned. At about three am
- 12:48Speaker 1: on February fifth, Anetra and her friend Scoot, who was
- 12:52Speaker 1: staying over at the house, were both awoken by a loud,
- 12:55Speaker 1: shattering noise. Initially believing that one of the pets had
- 12:59Speaker 1: caused the disturbs, they ignored it. The next morning, after
- 13:03Speaker 1: Scoot walked home, Anietre called to the police to report
- 13:07Speaker 1: that the tires on her car had been slashed and
- 13:10Speaker 1: bricks had been thrown through two windows of the house.
- 13:14Speaker 1: She told law enforcement that she did not know who
- 13:16Speaker 1: could have done it, though it was actually the second
- 13:19Speaker 1: time that someone had pierced her tires in the night.
- 13:28Speaker 5: Interest people.
- 13:31Speaker 4: Basically, you know we're here today for granted Bun here
- 13:36Speaker 4: for crimin damage the property. And I'm just said that
- 13:39Speaker 4: he was granted bun for that particular matter, and so
- 13:41Speaker 4: he can get back to his career in the Nasty's army.
- 13:46Speaker 4: But before it's just hurting to see him coming here
- 13:47Speaker 4: in the shops like that. Like you said, criminal, my
- 13:50Speaker 4: son has never done anything anymore. Uh, he didn't do
- 13:53Speaker 4: this incident. I can sympathize with the family.
- 13:56Speaker 7: I truly do.
- 13:57Speaker 4: I have daughters. I even have one in college, and
- 14:00Speaker 4: something like that would happen to her, I would be devastated.
- 14:04Speaker 4: But my son didn't do this. He was raised the
- 14:06Speaker 4: right way. He's not violent, never been in a fight,
- 14:09Speaker 4: never having any criminal background. He's a good He's a
- 14:11Speaker 4: good kid, a good soul, serving our country problems does it?
- 14:18Speaker 4: It mostly agnos me how certain media and social media
- 14:23Speaker 4: and certain people and uh and in society to have
- 14:26Speaker 4: destroyed him and slam his name. They don't really know
- 14:29Speaker 4: the real DeMarcus live. The real DeMarcus Middle is a
- 14:32Speaker 4: very humble young man. He made sergeant three years in
- 14:35Speaker 4: the United States Army. He doesn't have any any thing
- 14:39Speaker 4: on his background, any blemishes, nothing. Nobody can't say nothing
- 14:42Speaker 4: bad about my son. He's been here on this earth
- 14:44Speaker 4: twenty two years and can't no one say anything terrible
- 14:48Speaker 4: about my son.
- 14:50Speaker 1: JaMarcus eventually admitted to police that he had slashed Denetris
- 14:54Speaker 1: tires and throwing bricks at her house. He had reacted
- 14:58Speaker 1: in a rage when he discovered that she had a
- 15:00Speaker 1: man staying overnight. Throughout this, he maintained his innocence of
- 15:05Speaker 1: the murder. The army sergeant was offered a ten thousand
- 15:09Speaker 1: dollars bond and release with an ankle monitor, but he
- 15:13Speaker 1: would be charged with malice murder only hours later before
- 15:17Speaker 1: he could be released from the county jail, and he
- 15:21Speaker 1: wasn't alone. His longtime friend Javon Abram was arrested as
- 15:25Speaker 1: well on two counts of giving false statements to law
- 15:29Speaker 1: enforcement and one count of concealing a death. When DeMarcus
- 15:34Speaker 1: went to trial in March twenty twenty two at a
- 15:37Speaker 1: Peach County courthouse, it was his former friend, who he
- 15:41Speaker 1: had claimed was like a brother to him, who had
- 15:43Speaker 1: become the star witness.
- 15:47Speaker 5: Javan will tell you that marks then an treating.
- 15:55Speaker 6: And show.
- 16:00Speaker 5: Chlter to death.
- 16:03Speaker 1: Defense attorney Benjamin Davis argued that de Marcus Little was
- 16:07Speaker 1: not the kind of person who could commit murder. He
- 16:10Speaker 1: was an upstanding and humble man, a soldier serving his country. Conversely,
- 16:16Speaker 1: prosecutor Neil Halverson described an at times toxic relationship between
- 16:22Speaker 1: DeMarcus and Anitra, filled with control, threats, manipulation, and possessiveness
- 16:28Speaker 1: on his part. The romance that had first appeared so
- 16:33Speaker 1: perfect on paper had become a nightmare from which Aneitra
- 16:36Speaker 1: could not escape. Days at trial were spent reading the
- 16:41Speaker 1: couple's messages exchanged over months leading up to her death.
- 16:46Speaker 1: Anitra described him as an evil, manipulative person. Anietra wrote
- 16:51Speaker 1: that she was tired of de Marcus's threats and abuse.
- 16:55Speaker 1: She tried to distance herself from him, but over and
- 16:59Speaker 1: over again, he worked his way back. In his messages
- 17:03Speaker 1: repeatedly accused Anetra of being with another man. On November first,
- 17:08Speaker 1: Anietra wrote that they should stop speaking to each other altogether.
- 17:13Speaker 1: She told him that every time they talk she ends
- 17:16Speaker 1: up being manipulated. Days later, de Marcus threatened suicide. He
- 17:22Speaker 1: blamed her for pushing him to that point. Then he
- 17:25Speaker 1: went silent for hours as a Nietra reached out, concerned
- 17:30Speaker 1: for his welfare. Eventually, De Marcus replied to Niitra, telling
- 17:34Speaker 1: her that his attempt on his life did not work,
- 17:37Speaker 1: but his manipulative tactics did. Within days of this alleged
- 17:42Speaker 1: attempt on his life, the line of communication between the
- 17:45Speaker 1: two reopened on a Nietra's birthday in November. He told
- 17:50Speaker 1: her that he was sparing the man that he believed
- 17:53Speaker 1: she was going out with that night. The two had
- 17:56Speaker 1: broken up at that point. Nonetheless, de Marcus threatened any
- 18:00Speaker 1: man he believed she was spending time with. He even
- 18:04Speaker 1: sent her a screenshot of a message he wrote to
- 18:06Speaker 1: an unknown individual offering them two hundred dollars to harm
- 18:11Speaker 1: Anitra's alleged date. He told her, We're going to have
- 18:15Speaker 1: problems if you go out with him. O M M
- 18:18Speaker 1: on my mama. At times he threatened her life, directly
- 18:23Speaker 1: stating that his mercy has limits after he accused her
- 18:27Speaker 1: again of texting with another man. David Scoot Howard was
- 18:35Speaker 1: a barber across the street from the eighteen thirty six
- 18:38Speaker 1: restaurant in Lounge where Anitra worked as a server The
- 18:43Speaker 1: twenty one year old lived in his family home only
- 18:45Speaker 1: a few doors down from Anetra's house on West Church Street.
- 18:49Speaker 1: Scout told the jury that on the morning of February fourteenth,
- 18:53Speaker 1: he was at home and he realized that he may
- 18:55Speaker 1: have left his second cell phone at Anitra's house the
- 18:58Speaker 1: night before. Scoot needed the phone for work, so he
- 19:02Speaker 1: messaged Anietra asking if she could look for it. The
- 19:06Speaker 1: response he received back was bizarre. The text from Anitra's
- 19:11Speaker 1: phone said to send his location and she would drive
- 19:14Speaker 1: over to him at his house. Scoot testified that his
- 19:18Speaker 1: home was so close to Aniitra's that if you were
- 19:21Speaker 1: to stand at the end of his driveway, he could
- 19:23Speaker 1: clearly see Anitra's front door. She knew where he lived,
- 19:27Speaker 1: and she certainly did not need to drive when.
- 19:32Speaker 5: This message, what were you saying?
- 19:36Speaker 3: He is?
- 19:37Speaker 1: He tried calling her, but she didn't pick up. Scoot
- 19:43Speaker 1: received messages stating that she just couldn't talk at the moment. Then,
- 19:48Speaker 1: to add to his confusion, the following message seemed to
- 19:51Speaker 1: be trying to break up with him. That was fine,
- 19:55Speaker 1: he said, but the two were not involved. Scoot said
- 19:58Speaker 1: they had only hung out couple of times, he hesitated
- 20:02Speaker 1: to even categorize them as friends because they were just
- 20:05Speaker 1: getting to know each other. When the person with her
- 20:08Speaker 1: phone asked again for his address, he responded that he
- 20:12Speaker 1: wanted no part in whatever was going on. Where By
- 20:26Speaker 1: this time Scoot was standing outside of his house. The
- 20:29Speaker 1: person with a Nietris phone said they were on their
- 20:32Speaker 1: way to him and to wait out front. He watched
- 20:35Speaker 1: as a twenty nineteen black Toyota Corolla with red pinstripes
- 20:40Speaker 1: circled the block five or maybe six times. Concerned, he
- 20:45Speaker 1: messaged Sierra Stewart. He informed her of the strange messages
- 20:49Speaker 1: coming from a Nietra's phone and texted over the license
- 20:52Speaker 1: plate number of the black Corolla. Police would later match
- 20:57Speaker 1: this tag to DeMarcus Little's vehicle. On the afternoon of Sunday,
- 21:04Speaker 1: February sixteenth, Javon, Abram and de Marcus Little left church
- 21:09Speaker 1: together and went for a drive. While in the car,
- 21:13Speaker 1: Javon told the jury that DeMarcus freely confessed to him
- 21:16Speaker 1: that he had strangled Anitra in the night. He had
- 21:20Speaker 1: poured his heart out to her, He said. He told
- 21:22Speaker 1: her that they were soulmates and how much he loved her.
- 21:26Speaker 1: In response, he said she had laughed at him in
- 21:29Speaker 1: the moments that followed. He claimed to have blacked out.
- 21:33Speaker 1: The next morning, he had disposed of her body in
- 21:36Speaker 1: the woods.
- 21:43Speaker 8: Should own. John told he liked she and the man
- 21:53Speaker 8: and the faith.
- 21:55Speaker 5: How had advice and flatten out.
- 22:00Speaker 4: Was like.
- 22:04Speaker 8: When he was after that night.
- 22:06Speaker 3: He just grabbed and.
- 22:08Speaker 9: Started choking and hide.
- 22:11Speaker 5: She just stopped lighting. So he felt like she had
- 22:16Speaker 5: wanted to be home.
- 22:17Speaker 3: She wanted to go where wam So he.
- 22:22Speaker 5: He told you that he had pulled his whole afternoon.
- 22:32Speaker 10: And that would be trifle at and.
- 22:36Speaker 5: That he had hit her and that he started to
- 22:41Speaker 5: choke her m h and that she fought at first brick.
- 22:49Speaker 11: And then he said to you, then it looked like
- 22:52Speaker 11: she just gave up because she wanted to be with
- 22:54Speaker 11: her mother.
- 22:56Speaker 5: And that's her mother was dead.
- 22:59Speaker 11: Mm hmm.
- 23:03Speaker 1: Javon came to realize that the following day, when he
- 23:05Speaker 1: had picked up his friend near to where Anitra's car
- 23:08Speaker 1: would be found, that he had assisted in covering up
- 23:11Speaker 1: the murder. DeMarcus told him that he had placed her
- 23:14Speaker 1: in the trunk of her car and then drove out
- 23:17Speaker 1: towards Crawford County. The front bumper fell off in the
- 23:21Speaker 1: rough terrain. Then he drove back to Fort Valley and
- 23:24Speaker 1: parked the car a few blocks from her house. From
- 23:27Speaker 1: that area, he called Javon for a ride, telling him
- 23:31Speaker 1: at the time that the Chevy Cruise with the missing
- 23:34Speaker 1: bumper could not have been his ex girlfriend's car. DaMarcus
- 23:38Speaker 1: told Javon that he kept Anitra's cell phone with him
- 23:41Speaker 1: that morning, later disposing of it inside of a drainage pipe.
- 23:48Speaker 1: Javon recounted how they drove out to Greer Road at
- 23:51Speaker 1: the Peach County Crawford County line, where Anitra had been left. There,
- 23:57Speaker 1: he saw her body in a state of shock, refused
- 24:00Speaker 1: to get out of the vehicle. DeMarcus retrieved part of
- 24:04Speaker 1: the Chevy Cruise's front bumper, which sat nearby, and asked
- 24:08Speaker 1: Javon to help him push it into the trunk. They
- 24:11Speaker 1: drove it further out and disposed of it in a
- 24:13Speaker 1: ditch off of another roadway. That portion of the bumper
- 24:17Speaker 1: was eventually located in the area where Javon stated it
- 24:21Speaker 1: would be further corroborating the friend's story was cell phone
- 24:25Speaker 1: location data. Both his device and Demarcus's phone, which corresponded
- 24:30Speaker 1: to the movements in Javon's version of events. This data
- 24:35Speaker 1: did not correspond to the story that DeMarcus Little would
- 24:39Speaker 1: tell the jury. Assistant District Attorney Don Baskin grilled to
- 24:45Speaker 1: de Marcus on the inconsistencies between his story and the
- 24:49Speaker 1: cell phone data. Location data placed him traveling from his
- 24:53Speaker 1: aunt's home at four to twenty Chestnut to where a
- 24:55Speaker 1: Nietro was found off of Greer Road at the county
- 24:59Speaker 1: line on Valentine's Day. DeMarcus testified that his transaction data
- 25:04Speaker 1: and location tracking on either side of the hour he
- 25:07Speaker 1: was in the woods was accurate, but he was never
- 25:12Speaker 1: in the area where Anitra was found dead.
- 25:15Speaker 2: So every single cash location that we just talked about
- 25:20Speaker 2: after the show, where you were.
- 25:27Speaker 5: So those same cash locations show.
- 25:32Speaker 2: At one o three you driving on Tanglewood Road headed toward.
- 25:36Speaker 11: Through your road.
- 25:38Speaker 5: Is that correct?
- 25:42Speaker 2: Your phone went offline at that moment, Hyans, And then
- 25:50Speaker 2: those same cash locations is right from nude until one o'clock.
- 25:56Speaker 5: And from two twenty for the rest of the day.
- 25:58Speaker 2: They then showed you in the woods off Rear Road.
- 26:02Speaker 5: Correct, They don't show you there that was my question.
- 26:07Speaker 5: My question was is do.
- 26:09Speaker 11: Those cash locations which you just testified were absolutely accurate
- 26:13Speaker 11: regards to your whereabouts between twelve and one and two
- 26:17Speaker 11: twenty to the rest of the night, those same cast
- 26:20Speaker 11: locations show you in the woods off rail road.
- 26:24Speaker 5: Don't think, just use yes.
- 26:29Speaker 11: If your bone shows you going from four twenty chest
- 26:32Speaker 11: night in the road to the woods off the greer road,
- 26:37Speaker 11: isn't that what happened?
- 26:38Speaker 4: Sir?
- 26:42Speaker 11: And you got that hat anatrius car and you drove
- 26:46Speaker 11: it over ditches and trees, causing a bumper to fall off,
- 26:51Speaker 11: causing everything else to break apart.
- 26:53Speaker 5: And you don't your soulmates like garbage in the middle
- 26:58Speaker 5: of the woods. Didn't serve her phone said you didn't, and.
- 27:02Speaker 8: Then he drove back down for being car a missing
- 27:07Speaker 8: phone and the missing wheeled will and he dumped her
- 27:10Speaker 8: car just like he dumped her at the corner.
- 27:14Speaker 7: Of bel and Mont her just like your phone. Say
- 27:21Speaker 7: so your phone is lying. I okay, it's necessary.
- 27:33Speaker 1: Demarcus's timeline became exceptionally confused when he attempted to explain
- 27:38Speaker 1: where he was later in the morning of the fourteenth.
- 27:41Speaker 1: At first, he told police that he had been at
- 27:44Speaker 1: home around eleven thirty am when anitra left his aunt's
- 27:47Speaker 1: house on Chestnut. His messages at that time to Sierra, however,
- 27:52Speaker 1: stated that he was out looking for anitra. David Scoot
- 27:57Speaker 1: Howard also spotted his car circling the block in Fort
- 28:00Speaker 1: Valley around the same time.
- 28:03Speaker 9: What were you doing driving in your car circling the
- 28:08Speaker 9: block around where David Howard lived between eleven thirty and
- 28:13Speaker 9: twelve fifteen.
- 28:16Speaker 7: I told Tom for.
- 28:19Speaker 5: Why she left your five minutes before? Because I want
- 28:22Speaker 5: to see this between eighteen So when the nature left,
- 28:29Speaker 5: you followed her. Look is that time when it's so hard,
- 28:35Speaker 5: isn't it? You just told the jury a few minutes
- 28:43Speaker 5: ago that you were actually just hanging out of the house.
- 28:48Speaker 5: That didn't answer my question, sir.
- 28:50Speaker 2: My question to you was what did you do between
- 28:54Speaker 2: eleven and a m And twelve fifteen?
- 28:58Speaker 5: I can't remember that. You can't remember what you were.
- 29:02Speaker 10: Doing at the house, okay, And so when you say
- 29:07Speaker 10: I'll be back, you actually did leave the house then, correct,
- 29:12Speaker 10: And you did get in your car, and you did
- 29:14Speaker 10: drive repeatedly by David Howard's.
- 29:18Speaker 5: Address as that address I told him around the.
- 29:23Speaker 2: Fiction and you were doing that with a naturous thought.
- 29:30Speaker 5: Correct.
- 29:31Speaker 10: It's weird because a metral was texting David Hap at
- 29:36Speaker 10: the exact same time.
- 29:37Speaker 5: Don't drive around asking where he is and what he
- 29:41Speaker 5: looks like. You know, weird exactly twicident. That's what before
- 29:46Speaker 5: we used for Here are the old saying, simplest explanation
- 29:51Speaker 5: that you dream.
- 29:58Speaker 1: The jury deliberated for about three hours. They had three
- 30:04Speaker 1: counts to consider, malice, murder, felony murder, and aggravated assault.
- 30:10Speaker 1: If the jury came to the conclusion that DeMarcus had
- 30:12Speaker 1: killed anitra in a rage, they could apply the second count,
- 30:16Speaker 1: which is appropriate if the killer acted without intent. Either
- 30:20Speaker 1: murder count has the potential to carry the same sentence.
- 30:25Speaker 9: Count one malice, Read the jury find Marcus DeVante Little
- 30:31Speaker 9: not guilty for Camp two.
- 30:34Speaker 5: Come on murder, read the jury find Marcus Duvantay Little guilty.
- 30:40Speaker 5: Camp three agabd assault.
- 30:43Speaker 11: Read the jury find no Marcus Devanteed Little guilty.
- 30:49Speaker 1: Speaking about the case publicly following the verdict, Assistant District
- 30:54Speaker 1: Attorney Don Baskin described the concerns the state had held
- 30:57Speaker 1: when selecting jurors to hear the case. At the time,
- 31:01Speaker 1: there was worry that some in the jury pool would
- 31:04Speaker 1: be unable to place the blame for what had occurred
- 31:07Speaker 1: squarely at the feet of the abuser. The victim had
- 31:11Speaker 1: indeed returned to him on a number of occasions despite
- 31:15Speaker 1: his progressively more volatile behavior. Baskin described the process like
- 31:20Speaker 1: a frog in a pot of slowly boiling water. Had
- 31:24Speaker 1: a nature have been thrown right into the abuse, she
- 31:27Speaker 1: would have jumped right out. But as time went on,
- 31:31Speaker 1: the manipulation became an incremental cycle, finally escalating to very
- 31:36Speaker 1: serious and violent threats that would otherwise have been enough
- 31:40Speaker 1: for her to get out and seek help.
- 31:44Speaker 6: The picture that we wanted to paint was, despite the
- 31:46Speaker 6: frustrating nature of domestic violence, especially from those of us
- 31:49Speaker 6: that are sitting on the outside, that is, to never
- 31:51Speaker 6: give up, to keep fighting, to remind the individual who's
- 31:56Speaker 6: in the cycle that they're in a dangerous pot of
- 31:58Speaker 6: water and that it's want to come.
- 32:00Speaker 1: To a boy. The state requested what they deemed the
- 32:04Speaker 1: only appropriate sentence for a Nietra Gun's murder life without
- 32:10Speaker 1: the possibility of parole. The judge agreed. In March of
- 32:16Speaker 1: twenty twenty two. DeMarcus Little was sent to prison for
- 32:20Speaker 1: the rest of his natural life. That was the tragic
- 32:29Speaker 1: case of a Nietra gun. Thank you so much for
- 32:32Speaker 1: being here. I'm Kevin. This is just thought lounge, and
- 32:36Speaker 1: I'll see in the next one.
- 32:44Speaker 5: Found just when the scene, please tell me who the
- 32:47Speaker 5: screen saves.
- 32:48Speaker 6: I can hear the crimes repeat.
- 32:50Speaker 8: You gotta take my time because these crimes get deep,
- 32:52Speaker 8: but these stories can't high.
- 32:53Speaker 1: Let me find my seat, Kevin, go ahead to settle in.
- 32:55Speaker 8: Gotta be selective, doing all the research, keeping it objective,
- 32:59Speaker 8: always beneffects.
- 33:00Speaker 9: Could say he.
- 33:00Speaker 6: Got a neck pickure of the litter.
- 33:02Speaker 1: You see how Newton got his back.
- 33:03Speaker 5: Yeah, the content that you need to be a new
- 33:06Speaker 5: sign talking the comments that you're in the few lines.
- 33:08Speaker 1: Tune in and had like loved that it's true.
- 33:10Speaker 5: Can it feels like the whole world is online for
- 33:12Speaker 5: true crime.
- 33:13Speaker 2: Watch him on the run.
- 33:14Speaker 8: But it's not a race.
- 33:15Speaker 5: Really hard to discipline without a race.
