Latest / The Slippery Slope / 240 E‑Bikes SEIZED — But Why?
Transcript
- 0:00So back in May we talked about selective outrage, how the media
- 0:05can turn 12 E bike deaths into an existential crisis while
- 0:09ignoring the 1324 Australians killed on our roads last year.
- 0:16So now Queensland police have doubled down on that narrative
- 0:20with Operation Yankee Surety. They've seized more than 240 E
- 0:25mobility devices in just one month and they're celebrating it
- 0:29like they've dismantled a criminal empire.
- 0:32But let's be honest, this isn't about safety.
- 0:36This is about optics, revenue and political theatre.
- 0:41Because if the government truly cared about Rd safety, they'd
- 0:46start with the 1324 deaths and not the 12.
- 0:51I'm Jay Fallon and this is the Slippery Slope podcast.
- 0:56Get my straight So let's breakdown what Queensland police
- 1:08proudly announced. Operation Yankee Surety seized
- 1:12more than 240 E mobility devices, issued fines,
- 1:17confiscated non compliant E bikes and scooters, and framed
- 1:22the whole thing as a major public safety victory.
- 1:26But look closely at the language in the article.
- 1:28It's not about dangerous riding. It's not about reckless
- 1:33behaviour, it's not about fatalities.
- 1:37It's about non compliance. And non compliance is
- 1:41bureaucratic code for revenue raising.
- 1:45This wasn't a safety operation, it was a fundraising Dr dressed
- 1:49up as public protection. The government didn't fix
- 1:55infrastructure, they didn't improve bike lanes, they didn't
- 1:59educate riders, they didn't support innovation.
- 2:03They just seized devices and handed out fines because that's
- 2:08easy, profitable and politically convenient.
- 2:13So we've got these Rd deaths versus E bike deaths.
- 2:16QLD had 12 E bike deaths last year.
- 2:19Very very sad and unfortunate. Australia as a whole had 1324 Rd
- 2:27deaths, 12 versus 1300. If the government was genuinely
- 2:33concerned about public safety, they'd be launching Operation Rd
- 2:39Surety, Operation Dangerous, Driver Crackdown or Operation
- 2:44Stop, the real Killers. But they're not Why?
- 2:49Because maybe it's because cars generate billions in fuel
- 2:54excise. Ebikes generate probably next to
- 2:58nothing. In reality, fuel excise revenue
- 3:01last year was 15.71 billion. That's with AB 15.71 billion.
- 3:10Over the next four years, it's projected to hit 67.6 billion.
- 3:17OK. That's why cars get a free pass.
- 3:19That's why E bikes get seized. That's why safety operations
- 3:25magically target the devices that don't contribute to
- 3:30government revenue. This isn't public safety.
- 3:33It's selective morality driven by selective revenue.
- 3:39We've got a government that's hostile to innovation.
- 3:42QLD politicians love talking about reducing congestion,
- 3:48lowering emissions or encouraging alternative
- 3:52transport, supporting green innovation.
- 3:55But when people actually adopt A clean, efficient, low cost form
- 3:59of transport, suddenly it's a little bit of a problem.
- 4:03Suddenly it's dangerous. Suddenly it needs to be
- 4:05regulated, restricted and seized.
- 4:08This is a government that punishes innovation while
- 4:11protecting outdated systems that make money.
- 4:15They want fewer cars on the road, or they say they do, but
- 4:19they don't want fewer lower fuel excise, fuel excise dollars.
- 4:25They want lower emissions, but not lower revenue.
- 4:29They want cleaner transport, but only if they can tax it.
- 4:34E bikes threaten the wrong cash flow, so they're treated like
- 4:39contraband. This is conditioning the public
- 4:43in my opinion. Operations like Yankee Surety do
- 4:47something far more dangerous than confiscate ebikes.
- 4:51They condition the public. They train people to accept more
- 4:56enforcement, more fines, more surveillance, more compliance,
- 5:01more government control over personal transport choices.
- 5:08This is how freedom erodes. Not through dramatic overnight
- 5:12changes, but through safety operations that normalise
- 5:16government intrusion. It's the same pattern we see
- 5:20everywhere and we've seen here before.
- 5:22You know, exaggerate minor risk, ignore the major risk, enforce
- 5:27compliance, and celebrate the crackdown.
- 5:31Rinse and repeat. This is selective outrage
- 5:34weaponized for political theatre.
- 5:38So these are the questions I think we should all be asking
- 5:42ourselves. These are the questions I think
- 5:43matter. If E bikes are so dangerous,
- 5:47what about the one 3324 Rd deaths and why aren't they the
- 5:52priority? Is the government fighting E
- 5:56bikes because they threaten fuel excise revenue?
- 6:01Why does Queensland celebrate confiscating E bikes but ignore
- 6:06the real killers on our roads? Why is innovation punished while
- 6:12outdated systems are protected? And who benefits financially
- 6:17from keeping people in cars, I wonder?
- 6:21These questions, I believe, expose the hypocrisy behind the
- 6:25crackdown. But you know, selective outrage
- 6:29isn't new. Scripture warns us about leaders
- 6:33who obsess over trivialities while ignoring real injustice.
- 6:38Matthew 2324. I think I've said this before.
- 6:40You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel.
- 6:45Think of it. The government is straining out
- 6:47E bikes, which is the gnat while swallowing the camel of 1324 Rd
- 6:52deaths. Micah 311 says her leaders judge
- 6:58for a bribe. Now, fuel excise isn't a bribe,
- 7:01OK, but it is a financial incentive that shapes policy.
- 7:07Operation Yankee Surety isn't about safety.
- 7:11It's about optics. It's about revenue.
- 7:15It's about pretending to solve a problem while ignoring the real
- 7:201. And until our leaders stop
- 7:23swallowing camels and straining out gnats, QLD will keep
- 7:28punishing innovation or protecting the systems that
- 7:32profit from our dependence. As always, this is my opinion.
- 7:40I'm Jay Fallon, and thanks for listening to the Slippery Slope
- 7:43podcast. They just feel.
