- 0:15Happy Halloween, everybody. Welcome to this Halloween edition here of four Finger Discount
- 0:19Extra here on the four Finger Discout Network. I am your host, Brendan
- 0:22Dando. I hope you're all having plenty of treats and enjoying many, many
- 0:25episodes of Trios of Horror, and it's exactly what we're going to be doing
- 0:28here today on four Finger Discount Extra. I have been joined once again by
- 0:32my man, Elliott J. O'Neill from the Simpsons Index podcast. You can
- 0:36find the link for all of these podcasts in the description of this pod.
- 0:39And since it's Halloween, we thought we'd go back and discuss our favorite horror
- 0:42parodies into Simpsons, and we've got a bit of a mixed message. He
- 0:47we discussed best parodies, he went with best parodies in horror have best horror
- 0:52parodies in the Simpsons, so it's a little bit of a mismatch there.
- 0:55He does a couple of ones that are not horror based, but you know,
- 0:57basically we're covering the best parodies mostly in the Treos of Horror franchise,
- 1:02because for many of us who grew up in the nineties, the Treos of
- 1:04Horror series was the series that introduced many of us to horror. You know,
- 1:08I didn't know what The Shining was. I didn't know what Nightmare and
- 1:11Elm Street was, And as we discussed in this pod, I still haven't
- 1:15seen The Shining, and either is Alliot, and I think there's probably many
- 1:17Simpsons fans out there who haven't seen it because it's like, well, I've
- 1:19seen The Shitting and it's such a great parody. I don't need to see
- 1:23The Shining. I don't know. I know there's fans of The Shining at
- 1:26there saying no, no, Dana, you definitely need to watch that movie,
- 1:27and I will one day, but I just haven't watched it yet.
- 1:30Of course, I've seen the night Maro Nol Streets franchise, because we all
- 1:33have a bit of our Freddie Krueger of Anyway, before we get into today's
- 1:36show, I just wanted to remind you guys that if you do enjoy everything
- 1:38we do here, add four finger discount across how many shows across the network,

- 2:16so much more just for as little as one single dollar we do per month
- 2:21because I can access to exclusive stuff on our Patreon. But of course we
- 2:24are not here to talk about Patreon. We are here to talk about the
- 2:28best horror parodies in the Simpsons Treehouse of Horror. So let's sit back and
- 2:31enjoy my conversation with one Alliot Joe O'Neill from the Amazing Simpsons Index podcast.
- 2:43So we're recording this on Halloween Eve. Mister O'Neill, what are your plans
- 2:46for Halloween this year? I'm going to see Sparks at the Sydney Opera House.
- 2:51Do you know the band Sparks. I do not know the band Sparks.
- 2:53No, they are not that spooky at all. But Edgar Wright did
- 2:58a documentary on them few years ago now came out during Lockdown. But yeah,
- 3:04it's just this band that have been around since I think the late sixties.
- 3:07It's this brother duo and h This documentary just details this band that like
- 3:14almost broke through the big time but always like had a pretty sure footing in
- 3:17mostly the English music scene, but incredibly prolific, like something ridiculous like thirty
- 3:23odd albums. And there was a stretch recently where they played a different album
- 3:29in full every night at the London Hammersmith, I believe. And yeah,
- 3:34they just insanely talented musicians. And yeah, since that documentary became one of
- 3:38my favorite bands. So yeah, into entertaining the trick or Traders and then
- 3:43shooting out to the Opera House for a very non thematic concert. I was
- 3:47gonna say, you one of those guys that just tries to avoid the trick
- 3:50or treats, gonna say, are you doing this to avoid the trick or
- 3:52treating? No? I love it. I love it so much like Halloween
- 3:55is a holiday I can really get behind because we didn't get it as kids.
- 4:01That's why, you know. Yeah, fully, it's like finally,
- 4:04you know. Yeah, And I always sort of lived in semi rural areas
- 4:08where just going trick or treating was just impractical, like it'd be snatched.
- 4:14Yeah, exactly, all walking five kilometers to go to three houses, none
- 4:17of neew oh, it's the thirty first of October and halla, what you
- 4:20say is actually tobias fully fully but yeah, so yeah, when I moved
- 4:30into yeah, a more dense area, yeah, I embraced it fully.
- 4:33And at my previous house in Castle Hill, a huge suburban area, like
- 4:41every Halloween we'd get like over three hundred kids coming by our house. Yeah,
- 4:46it was so cool, and they'd put in a lot of effort,
- 4:48and I don't know, maybe it was like two hundred kids, and like
- 4:51one hundred were really savvy and realized I have the memory of a goldfish.
- 4:55So they could drop by, changed costumes, vand the corner and came back
- 4:59exactly, No, because I know kids do that more often, just have
- 5:02like costumes that it's practical to easily get changed out of and go in the
- 5:05corner, get changing and come back again again with the amount of kids that
- 5:09pass through, I wouldn't have known. I'd seen so many costumes that it
- 5:12all becomes a blur. And yeah, I was one of those yeah full
- 5:15candy bar houses as well. And one year I went to way too much
- 5:19effort and did like little lollibags as well, with like, yeah, a
- 5:23couple of things and like a little toy that will break in like five seconds.
- 5:27But yeah, I really get into it. Now that I've moved into
- 5:30like closer to the city, I'm sort of like on the outskirts of the
- 5:33Sydney City. Yeah, I'm expecting a big one this year as well.
- 5:38And yeah, now that we're out of the lockdown years, Yeah, I'm
- 5:42really excited this year. Where we live is like the golf course of the
- 5:46state, right And for some reason, I don't know why they do this,
- 5:47but they block it off so that kids who aren't from the estate coun
- 5:50come in, so it's like the estate only trick or treating. I guess
- 5:53they just I don't know why they do this, but they trying to keep
- 5:56like a communal kind of feel here. It's nice because you always see the
- 5:59same kids and it does sort of I know, I don't agree with it,
- 6:01but also I can see the positives because it helps you sort of meets
- 6:04your neighbors. Yeah, yeah, no, that's good. So yeah,
- 6:09you guys have been there for a while. You guys get into it as
- 6:11well. Well, we've been here for nine years and they only did the
- 6:14I feel chicken treating has only really taken off the last three or four,
- 6:16don't you think, like probably taken off pretty COVID. There was a couple
- 6:19of years COVID that we shall never speak of that again. That was like
- 6:24three years of her life we didn't get back. If you pretend COVID ever
- 6:26happened, I reckon it's been like five or so years where like trick or
- 6:30treating has been an actual thing. I love it, and the kids love
- 6:31it. They're really excited to get dressed up. I think because I've got
- 6:33two small kids, I use them as an excuse to sort of get into
- 6:36it as well. Yeah, but do you have like a Halloween tradition?
- 6:40Because people listening to this, I'm dropping this on actual Halloween the thirty first
- 6:44of what to what's your Halloween tradition? Because for me, I always drop
- 6:46a couple of treouse of Horrors. Yeah, i'dn't even thought about that.
- 6:50I like, I've gotten a projector and thought, oh maybe yeah, while
- 6:56the trick of trading's happening, I'll like play Treehouse of Horrors and just hanging
- 6:59out at the front of my house. And then like we're not on the
- 7:01last pod. Yeah, oh yeah, that's right, and yeah with the
- 7:03Gory Pod, and it's like, actually, that's probably not a great idea.
- 7:06Some of those segments can get a bit grim, and you know,
- 7:11as much as yeah, we like to embrace the spooky on Halloween, and
- 7:14there's still a few kids out there who it's quite confronting for still, Like,
- 7:17if you haven't checked out our previous conversation for Halloween episodes, we a
- 7:20couple of weeks ago we did the gorious deaths, you know, almost gruesome
- 7:24deaths in Triosophia, which is a lot of fun. But today we're going
- 7:26to be covering just the best Simpsons horror parodies. And it doesn't necessarily mean
- 7:29in tries of horror, although ninety five percent of them are in trios of
- 7:31Horror for obvious reasons. But there's been some horror parities throughout the show as
- 7:35well that I want to touch on. But yeah, so what was the
- 7:39first one that springs to mind for you when you think of Simpson's horror parodies?
- 7:42What's the one that's immediately when you say simpsons horror parodies come straight to
- 7:45your mind? My notes here, I've just written, obviously, the best
- 7:48is the Shinning, Like most of us, the most popular is the Shinning.
- 7:53Is it the best though? I think? I mean, of course
- 7:57I'm going to be coming at it not having what the shining still and actually
- 8:01having not watched a lot of the source material for a lot of these,
- 8:05but I mean as far as like a well realized parody and like because especially
- 8:11if you listen to the commentaries and whatever they're talking about the shots that you
- 8:13know, they were trying to replicate with Kubrick's thing and like Kubrick's particular like
- 8:20view of like a really introducing perspective into a shot and how he frames things,
- 8:26and they were really doing a lot of effort to yeah, imitate that
- 8:30style and everything. I think that's I think that's another one where like it's
- 8:35you know, when you go to a museum and you see a piece of
- 8:37art and like, what the fuck's this? Then you read the plaque and
- 8:39it becomes that much more impressive. Like this is one especially that benefits from
- 8:43yeah, checking out the commentaries, kept checking out the supplemental feat probably checking
- 8:48out the movie itself as well. But I think it's just does what a
- 8:50good Simpsons parody should do is, yeah, recast the Simpsons so as these
- 8:56characters, but they still feel like the Simpsons. You know, it's not
- 9:00being the Jack Nis character. It's still horrmer. It's just that they're yeah,
- 9:05they're meeting them halfway right, one hundred percent. The thing is,
- 9:09you watch the shitting right now. I think there's many Simpsons fans out there
- 9:11who have gone, I don't need to watch the Shining. I've seen the
- 9:13Shinning. It's the same shit, Yeah exactly. It's seven minutes versus two
- 9:16hours. Yeah, you just feel like you've seen the movie because you've seen
- 9:20the shitting. Because you're watching you're like, if this is a not beat
- 9:22for beat ripoff of it or parody of it, it's like, well,
- 9:26I know the ending now, but you're you're right there with the visuals and
- 9:31things like that, and it's all subjective though, Like when I was asking
- 9:35the question, is it the best. It probably is the best in the
- 9:37sense that it's the most popular, and it's the one that seems to sort
- 9:41of spring to mind because it's got a great comedy with the no TV,
- 9:43no beer, they home with something something, So they took something that was
- 9:46so iconic and simpsonized it. But they did it so many different times throughout
- 9:50the throughout the segment, like the whole year. But they did the David
- 9:58let him in David Grandpa, Yeah, which was a great callback to the
- 10:01opening shot of that they left grab By behind, you know. Yeah,
- 10:05it was just it's so funny that segment. I'm glad we got that one.
- 10:09I had the way first because that is the most iconic him. I'm
- 10:11doing the currently on the Facebook page the best Treance of Horror segments, and
- 10:15it looks like the Shitting's going to win it, win it by a long
- 10:16marger. So I think next year we're going to do is the Shitting's are
- 10:20going to be out of it, and then we'll have the contest again and
- 10:22then we'll have the win the victor of that one versus the Shinning. Yeah.
- 10:26I still think the Shitning will probably stillin thee seems to be the one
- 10:28that everyone remembers and loves the most, isn't it. Yeah? Absolutely,
- 10:31But like the other thing is, like over my Patreon page for my Simpsons
- 10:37podcast, we review the DVD box sets and the bonus features there in and
- 10:41we were surprised because, like in the atomatic or storyboard version of this,
- 10:46like there was this running John Denver gag that got cut. Like I think
- 10:52there's like a remnants of it still in there, but it was just this
- 10:54repeated gag and just like the basic punchline was that John Denver sucks, like
- 11:00and it was just this really interesting thing and just goes back to the sort
- 11:03of doomsday process that the Simpsons hauld go through to really refine their episodes and
- 11:09make them funny on every single repeat, because yeah, they've talked about in
- 11:13the past. You know, if it wasn't funny on the thirtieth time,
- 11:15you know, we cut it. And that's I think what makes the Shinning
- 11:20so great, and especially yeah, go back and check out the animatic version
- 11:24and see how much it changed and how tighter it got, because yeah,
- 11:28like we were saying, you know, you're cramming an entire movie into a
- 11:33seven minute segment and Yeah, these sorts of cuts are so necessary, and
- 11:37I think, yeah, having seen that is another reason that the Shinning stands
- 11:41out, because it is just such a tight, funny segment where every bit
- 11:46is necessary. Am I imagining things or because I've watched those delivereds scenes and
- 11:50things so often that they're like in the episode of my mind? Yeah?
- 11:54But is the scene where Home is eating in the fridge and most sends in
- 11:58the guls to drake out is that in the actual episode or was that a
- 12:01deleted scene as well? No, that's in the episode. That was one
- 12:03where I was like, what the fuck actually happened there? Yeah, the
- 12:09universal vers and monsters, I like, for some reason I remember that being
- 12:11like a deleted Is it like an extended version of that scene or something in
- 12:13the deleted scenes? Yeah? Possibly, Yeah, I think so that that
- 12:16was one where I was like, they need a bit more context for this
- 12:20one. But yeah, but yeah, that one is absolutely iconic. And
- 12:24yeah, just you're touching earlier with the shots. I always loved the shot
- 12:28where the kids are running and Mudge running away in the snow. It's like
- 12:31a bird's eye view and you can just see the distance when homies like he's
- 12:35gaining on them. I just thought that was just so scary as a kid,
- 12:37I'm like, holy shit, imagine having to try and run away from
- 12:39this guy who's this monster in snow. Running on sand is bad enough in
- 12:43snow. Yeah, yeah, Oh, they make their sense of danger so
- 12:48great, and like yeah, doing things like imitating the score of the movie
- 12:52as well, like that absolutely epic score. Like all these little touches are
- 12:58just so important, and it's just nice when you sort of see a fandom
- 13:01shine through their work like this, like in the parody form where it's like
- 13:07it's less of parody and more like an homage, you know. Yeah,
- 13:11Now I want to touch on one that's arguably the most iconic horror movie of
- 13:13all time. But these are all from episodes that aren't trees of horror.
- 13:18These a Marges's Psycho Oh right, yeah, so you know Skinner looking at
- 13:24the window and talking to mother in the house, Maggie hitting home with the
- 13:30mallet, that's the most popular one, but the and like the Homer laying
- 13:33and next to the drain with the paint going down the drain, things like
- 13:35that in the garage and the Springfield Files when they play the Psycho music on
- 13:41the bus the orchestra. Yeah, that's right. So yeah, so I
- 13:45just thought we need to acknowledge the ones that aren't and tries of horrors as
- 13:48well, because I think the hom aren't getting hit with the mallet by Maggie
- 13:52that used to get played on all the clip shows as well, and so
- 13:54that I thought that was like one that we had to mention. Was that
- 13:58the Dando origin story as well that got you banned from The Simpsons or we
- 14:01can touch on that one and live well now if you'll like to Bad dream
- 14:03House in the Midiville Horror, which is also I think of take on Poltergeist
- 14:07as well. But Maggie goes to the kitchen and gets the knife out of
- 14:09the drawer and that's what Yeah, no, I am actually thinking. I
- 14:15think I'm thinking of another friend who the hammer scene from yeah March versus Itchy
- 14:20and Scratchy. So it's prisoner than now living in Yeah, that's it.
- 14:24It's the direct line from The Simpsons to there like yeah, so yeah,
- 14:31yeah, Psycho argue with the most iconic horror movie of all time, so
- 14:33worthy even mentioned. But yeah, so Bad dream House is another one in
- 14:37the Midivill Horror. That's a good parody as well. You watch. I
- 14:39appreciate that one a lot more as an adult because it's not necessarily gory.
- 14:43I think I enjoyed as silly as it sounds. As a kid, I
- 14:45enjoyed sort of like the violence sort of side of things, which treos of
- 14:48horror, but just things like The Raven and Bad dream House. I appreciate
- 14:50a lot more as a good older now. The Raven is, yeah,
- 14:54one is a kid, where like I'd even be annoyed that that one came
- 14:58on as one hundred percent I was like, what is this? Yeah,
- 15:03but no, as an adult, it's like it is such a well formed,
- 15:05like it's it's not even really a parody, isn't It's just like almost
- 15:11as like just it is the Raven. It's it's barely like the Simpsons in
- 15:16it, Like, yeah, Homer certainly doesn't talk like that. But I
- 15:18did love the shot of Marge with the hair with the paintings that it needs
- 15:22an extra picture for Marge's hair. Yeah, that's it. But they introduced
- 15:24like little Simpsons things into it, like yeah, the Bart Raven itself like
- 15:31being a bit like barti ish, but yeah, that one introduced like what
- 15:35a swing introducing Edgar Allan Poe to a bunch of an audience, who a
- 15:39cartoon watching audience, And we don't give the Simpsons or like now, actually
- 15:43we do, we give we give them enough credit for introducing kids to you
- 15:48know, the most kind of things are pop culture, like Edgar Allan Poe.
- 15:50But it felt like in that first Treeouse of Horror they weren't really sure
- 15:54that he'd go full gore and violence, doesn't it because none of the segments
- 15:56are that violent. No, no, And and like you said with Bad
- 16:00dream House, it's more about the dread and the fear of what might happen,
- 16:03and then hungry are the damned? It's yeah, the alien thing,
- 16:08which just ends up being a massive subversion, and yeah, the raven thing
- 16:12is yeah, more another dread thing. Yeah yeah, So there's no actual
- 16:17violence really in that first one. It's just the fear of But what's another
- 16:19one you wanted to touch on? Well, yeah, you're mentioning Psycho before
- 16:22just trailing on from the Hitchcock references. I think I brought this up in
- 16:26the last one as well. So it's from Treehouse of Horror twenty it's one
- 16:30of my I think probably my favorite most modern Treehouse of Horror segment is dial
- 16:36m for murder or press hash to return to the main menu. This is
- 16:40a parody of strangers on a train, but it's Bart and Lisa doing each
- 16:45other's murders for you know, miss Hoover and Miss Crabapple respectively. Lisa misinterprets
- 16:52and she just thought, because Bart says, yeah, we'll just didn't ditch
- 16:56them and he means kill, she just thought, you know, do a
- 17:00knock and run sort of prank on them, and so yeah, Bart comes
- 17:03back with missus Hoover's head and she's like, oh, what the fuck and
- 17:06he's like, hey, now you have to do my murder you. And
- 17:10I think this is just like a really well done parody, especially like the
- 17:14whole thing's in black and white. We're talking about score again as well.
- 17:18It's a real Hitchcock esque score, and you know, if you want Hitchcock
- 17:22references as well, they have this chase scene which is just basically them running
- 17:27through a bunch of Hitchcock references, which I don't know, you can probably
- 17:30take as lazy or whatever, but I think it's a really loving tribute and
- 17:36it's just such a well realized script and the story is great, Like it's
- 17:41one of these things where, yeah, they get the main beats of the
- 17:44movie and condense it down into a really compelling segment. And yeah, I
- 17:48honestly say, I don't really recall that one. Or does she accidentally kill
- 17:52bat at the end? Yeah, yeah, so I think at the end
- 17:55of the chase scene there's an accidental decapitation and then crab Bubble's like, ah,
- 18:00finally, and then Lisa's like, oh, I meant to do that
- 18:02the whole time. It does one of those sort of hokey endings, but
- 18:04yeah, yeah, but it sounds great. You have to go back and
- 18:07a visit that when I can't even when I did my research for the gory
- 18:10deaths, somehow missed that one. Yeah, Like Treehouse of Honor at twenty
- 18:15I think it's final segment lets it down. It's like a Sweeney Todd parody
- 18:21with Mo and Homer's no business like Mo business. Yeah yeah, So,
- 18:26like Homer dies in his basement hooked up to a bunch of beer things,
- 18:29but then he finds the beer actually makes his Homer's blood makes the beer taste
- 18:33nice, and especially Marge loves it and then falls in love with Mo.
- 18:37But there's this weird musical segment in it where Mo makes the excuse for Homer's
- 18:42death that he left Marge to go be gay, and it just it's screaming
- 18:48twenty years ago. Yeah, actually does have one of one that I really
- 18:52enjoy as well as don't have a cow mankind. Yeah, yeah, I
- 18:56think I brought that up as an ooral, but we'll mention in the gory
- 18:59ones as well. That's such a good zombie parody. Yeah, that's a
- 19:02takeoff. It's just any zombie movie, but I think more twenty eight days
- 19:03later, right, that's more, Yeah, more in that sort of yeah
- 19:07feel, And yeah, it's so much different from the zombie segment from the
- 19:11classic eras. And yeah, definitely well worth checking out twenty like one hundred
- 19:15percent. Yeah, another non treus of horror when they wanted to touch on
- 19:19was now it's not necessarily a horror movie, but it gives you horror vibes.
- 19:23Is Cape Fear. Yeah, it's true because obviously the take off of
- 19:27the film, but also the acknowledgement of Homer with the hockey mask. Yeah,
- 19:30Jason bade style just that Friday the third series just made hockey masks so
- 19:36terrifying, didn't they. Yeah, Yeah, I was surprised because, yeah,
- 19:41I watched Friday the thirteenth for the first time, like a decade and
- 19:42a half ago. The hockey mask isn't even in the first one. It's
- 19:47not in until the fourth one. I believe, Wow, because was it
- 19:49a third one. That's a third one. It's a third one, yeah,
- 19:52because the second one is just Jason with a bag over his head.
- 19:56Yeah right. It's just weird because it's such an iconic bit of you know,
- 20:00a horror costume. You know, there's always going to be a trick
- 20:03or trader doing the Hockey Master. It's an easy one to throw together as
- 20:07well. Yeah. I took a treat to once rocked up and the mum
- 20:11was just there with a kid, but she had this like old look and
- 20:14cart again on She's like, I'm Jason's mother, and I'm like, that's
- 20:15a kick ass glows gym Jason's mother. But she had like basically like the
- 20:21it was like a sweater. Her head was in the sweater, but had
- 20:22like a de captain and headlock hanging off the side. Oh that's good.
- 20:26Oh that's very good. But yes, also yeah, so Cape Fear just
- 20:32in itself, the film not a horror film, but it's it's pretty scary.
- 20:36Oh yeah, oh god, is it not a horror? I guess
- 20:38it's more of a thriller, like it's a psycho thriller. I guess you
- 20:41could say, yeah, yeah, yeah, just one of my favorite movies
- 20:45growing up as well, and like totally because of Cape Fear the Simpsons,
- 20:51Like was watching that and I think, yeah, my dad goes, oh,
- 20:53we've got the VHS of that. Yeah, and absolutely scared the piss
- 20:56out of me. I don't know what he was thinking showing me that movie,
- 21:00but like, do you look back at EA childhood sometimes and go what
- 21:03were my parents thinking? Oh? One hundred percent? Like I remember watching
- 21:08RoboCop from an early age, you know, like Kinney's Death. Yeah,
- 21:14no, seriously, Like Dada introduced me to South Park as well, Like
- 21:17he came, he like came into the rooms, like you've got to check
- 21:19out this cartoon, switches it to SBS. It's like there's a singing Christmas
- 21:22poove. We got to watch this. I remember when this isn't wasn't South
- 21:29Park. It reminded me of what my dad introduced me to, something not
- 21:30introducing but like allowing me to get swearing. It was the Offspring's Americana album
- 21:34Oh yeah, being insanity and the girl by the Canna's like just letting you
- 21:38know. It's got a warning course language sticker. And here I was clearly
- 21:41like ten, not even ten, and Dad's like looked at me, looked
- 21:45at the girl, looked back at me, and he's like, don't tell
- 21:47your mother. Yes, oh that rules. But yeah, what were we
- 21:53touching? Ok? Fear because it's almost like the shinning of Nontreos of Horror,
- 21:57isn't it, where it's just a beat for beats sort of take off
- 22:00of the film, but in a real Simpsons style. Yeah, well,
- 22:04I mean the actual Cape Fear is so much more grim, and I feel
- 22:10like that they still like have the appropriate amount of levity throughout the Cape Fear
- 22:14episode, and it's setting the precedent that Yeah Sidechho Bob's like theme music is
- 22:19the Cape theme music as well, And yeah, just doing again all those
- 22:26shots, all the score and just doing the right amount of imitation to show
- 22:30love and reverence towards this thing. Because it's a score sazy as well,
- 22:34isn't it that? Yeah, sure is. And like you read the opening
- 22:37line, it's like in prison for raping a young girl, and you're like,
- 22:40oh shit, yeah yeah, so obviously that I thought the way the
- 22:44Simpsons handled that was so good that you're saying that the music, you hear
- 22:47that music and you think of Sijo Bob, but it's not said Jo Bob's
- 22:49music. It's the Cape thear music exactly exactly. But also about Kelsey Grumm
- 22:53did to show how talent he is, like with the singing at the end
- 22:57with the Pinafore and things like that, Like what an episode, What a
- 23:02wild left turn for that to take? And I know right and again talking
- 23:07about reading the plaque and going back and listening to the commentaries, this was
- 23:10an episode where they were severely under time with it and they had to do
- 23:15a bunch of things in it to extend out the episode. And it's funny
- 23:18because like it's often things that like I'll criticize in new episodes. It's like,
- 23:22Okay, clearly your episode was running short, so you took this gag
- 23:26and you know, stretched it for an uncomfortable amount of time. But this
- 23:29episode like did like the quintessential versions of those things, you know, talking
- 23:33mister Thompson bit and the fucking rate gag, and these are just like amazing,
- 23:38like quintessential Simpsons, but like not the elephants that just unnecessarily drag out
- 23:45the episode, but like they're still so funny and it still feels so tight,
- 23:49Like yeah, it's just the Thompson's in his stuff. It's just such
- 23:52a great gag. You forget how many great gags are in that one episode,
- 23:56like but do with some brands before you go to bed. Yeah,
- 23:57Thompson's the just yeah, unbelievable episode. Yeah, so great, but yeah,
- 24:03still having the fear and dread and still making Sideshow Bob like a really
- 24:07scary villain as well. And yeah, I think he's the scariest in that
- 24:11episode, don't you think? Oh yeah, I think everything else is.
- 24:15Yeah, it's definitely way more sillier or it's just fleeting super villain he like
- 24:19from a comic book as opposed to like this guy looks like he just wants
- 24:22to kill this kid. Yeah, yeah, because yeah, Krusty gets Bustard.
- 24:26It's barely like any of that side of side show Bob in it and
- 24:30then Black Widow yeah as well. We don't even get a glimpse of it
- 24:33until the end. We're sort of led to believe he's rehabbed and everything.
- 24:36Yeah, well a crust the guests bust is more of just like a mastermind
- 24:40who not necessarily wants to kill, just wants to get back at somebody.
- 24:42Yeah, that's it. It's not until Cape Fear that he turns and is
- 24:45yeah, starting to send letters in blood like oh, we could die bad
- 24:51die as well, yeah exactly, which, Oh, I'm learning German at
- 24:55the moment, because yeah, I'm going to Germany next year. I've found
- 24:59out like di e is like because some languages have like masculine and feminine sort
- 25:07of languages. Yeah, that's the German the for a feminine article, which
- 25:11it's even funny for masculine. Yeah. Yeah, I was just a lie
- 25:15and it's like, oh wow, even yes, thirty some years later,
- 25:18I'm still getting new things out of this episode. That's goodread. Thing about
- 25:22it though, is it's just like, as a writer of The Simpsons,
- 25:25you'd be like, well, he was just improving on the spot. Yeah.
- 25:27Yeah, And the people in Spirit are so stupid they didn't realize exactly.
- 25:33Can we talk about one that's just going a lot further in the contest
- 25:37we're doing on the Facebook page. And I thought, And then I look
- 25:41back at the segment, I was like, I can see why. It's
- 25:42the child's play parody of clown without pity. Yeah, right, I,
- 25:47as a kid used to be genuinely scared from this one. It's not necessarily
- 25:52any like Gore in it that I can recall, but just the idea of
- 25:55toys coming to life and trying to kill you, Yeah, and no one
- 25:57believing you. That's the no one believing you that that someone's trying to kill
- 26:00you, That would be the most terrifying part. Yeah. But it's like
- 26:06the doll's trying to kill me in the tops has been laughing at me.
- 26:08That's a joke that just slip under the vade up for me for seventy years,
- 26:11and when I was older, I was like, holy shit, I
- 26:12need to go back. Did he just say that? Yeah? Well,
- 26:15I mean yeah, because it's Homer and he's so silly and like yeah,
- 26:18yeah, like crusty doll appearing in the bath and then him running through naked
- 26:22and how great is that? Uh and yeah, yeah, you're right,
- 26:30and like when he eventually does, like it is apparent that oh yeah,
- 26:34the doll is trying to kill him and and like he's just choking him,
- 26:37Like it's just it's so sinister and his teeth like the little pointy, crusty
- 26:41teeth. Yeah, yep. And such a clever but simple ending too,
- 26:47you got this thing set to evil. Yeah, there's no sort of like
- 26:51you know, possessed anything like that. It's just no, he'll set to
- 26:52evil. Yeah, just and one of those like almost a fuck your ending,
- 26:57But also like it it's so inherently funny, like why was this even
- 27:03a setting? Like I know, right, and that also gives us the
- 27:06that's good, that's bad? Yeah, oh true, I want Yeah,
- 27:11is that a specific parody of something? Kind of? I think it's just
- 27:15that them padding out a it seems like something that sort of they riffed in
- 27:19the writer's room, know, like this is too funny to not put in,
- 27:22even though it doesn't have any like parody or any reference to Charles play.
- 27:26Yeah, Like I think it is like a bit of a trope as
- 27:29well, like the you know, the item will carry a terrible because I
- 27:33mean We see it in the like Monkeys Poor episode as well, which is
- 27:36just, yeah, why do you even have this on sale if there's a
- 27:38Well, he always reminded me of the guy from Gremlins. Yes, he's
- 27:45the rules kind of thing, and I know the guy has actually say those
- 27:48in the actual film, but like he was giving me those kind of vibes
- 27:51that still gives me like the vibes from Gremlins. Yeah, absolutely, Yeah,
- 27:55So I think that's another thing that I'll touch on, especially later,
- 27:57is just like the general sort of TIChE that they'll do in these Treehouse of
- 28:02Horror segments and yeah, the haunted store clerk, yeah, is definitely one
- 28:07of those. Yeah, what's another one for you? I'm going to see
- 28:11a fucking trail on a segway from that very elegantly, but I think I've
- 28:17ruined that possibility by pointing it out. Actually, yeah, I'll throw out
- 28:21two from Treehouse of Horror ten Desperately Zeking Zena, which is like, I've
- 28:26actually become really fascinated with this like pre MCU superhero parody genre. Like again,
- 28:33to bring up my Patreon, we review movies that star the cast of
- 28:37the Simpsons, and in recent times, we've reviewed both Mystery Men from ninety
- 28:41ninety nine. Gazari is the not the fucking Gluy what was he? He's
- 28:45the Blue Raja, the Blue Raja, that's right, yes, yeah,
- 28:48he has the power to manipulate cutlery and chooses not to use knives. Yes,
- 28:53ayah, very good. And then Superhero Movie, which I surprisingly liked,
- 29:00like in the same like line if you know the Scary movie, Epic
- 29:03Movie and all those pieces of shit. This one was actually surprisingly good.
- 29:07But it was like more of a parody on like Sam Raimi, Spider Man
- 29:11and Fantastic Four, and yeah, similarly, this is a superhero parody coming
- 29:17out before like the MCU would come out and redefine what superhero content was.
- 29:22Also, they saw superhero movies. It's just like kitty stuff, didn't they
- 29:26a lot of the time. It's just if you like superheroes, you were
- 29:29immature where I am in really turned the tables for that, Yeah, absolutely,
- 29:32Well even before that, it was like, yeah, really Tim Burton's
- 29:34Batman, like reimagining Batman as like a gritty, grimy thing. Well it
- 29:41got ruined by the end though, you know, oh yeah, by the
- 29:42end of the nineties, people not have forgoten about those movies, but Batman
- 29:45once again became the cartoony shoemaker exactly. That's got to say, Yeah,
- 29:52I love those movies because I grew up with them, but I can appreciate
- 29:53how people who just who are old enough to enjoy the the visual Batman's would
- 29:57have gone what the fuck is this? Yeah? But yeah, so I
- 30:03really like this one because yeah, it's not doing like a specific parody,
- 30:07Like it's sort of Fantastic fourish in the sense that like it's Barton Lisa who
- 30:12a family getting their superpowers, and Barts like stretchy and Lisa's like strong light
- 30:18the thing. So like, I guess you could call it Fantastic four,
- 30:22but it is like more of a like, yeah, a campy superhero parody
- 30:26where it's just a bit more general And it's another one of these things where
- 30:30I really love the casting off it all, Like with Yeah, comic book
- 30:33guy is the collector, and I think, like, independent of late parody
- 30:37or anything, that's just a very good idea for a horror comic book villain
- 30:41is the obsessive yeah, toy collector with the death at the end as well,
- 30:48exactly, and keeping the actors in mint condition in my liart, Like
- 30:53that is so morbid and like that is such a fucked up thing to do,
- 30:57but like I could imagine like actually happening in a serious horror movie.
- 31:03And but and yeah, comic book guys just commitment to the bit as well,
- 31:07where even in death he wants to do a reference to a thing like
- 31:11stress dudent club a girl. Yeah, that's it and the song is so
- 31:15good. Yeah and yeah, and yeah, I'll throw in a quick side
- 31:18mentioned to the Futurama episode what is It Less Than a Hero where Frian Lela
- 31:25gets superpowers and Bender just joins the group because he can, because he wants
- 31:27to. Yeah that, Like, I know that one gets a mixed reaction
- 31:33because it feels like a non canon episode in a lot of ways, but
- 31:36it's it's such a good episode of Futurama, so fucking funny. Yeah.
- 31:40Treats of Horror ten. Is that the one that had I'm just looking through
- 31:42the three sevements, had the Y two K one, didn't it? Uh?
- 31:45Yeah, yeah, but the first segment of that one, I believe
- 31:48it is, Yes, it is. It's one I wanted to mention.
- 31:51I know what you ditterly Italy did, which is a seventh that I don't
- 31:55think gets talked about anywhere near enough. I always because I am a child
- 31:59with the nineties, so I think we all remember that. I know it
- 32:01did Last Summer franchise right when you were in your nineties kid, This guy
- 32:06with a hook, scary stuff, right, Yeah, you watch it now
- 32:07and it's kind of like, yeah, I can see why people laugh at
- 32:09these films, but there were big films in the nineties, and it was
- 32:13a bit of nostalgia for me when I watched this one, because you don't
- 32:15hear anyone really talking about the I know he did Last Summer Franchise, that
- 32:19all that. Often I feel like we're in You're gonna probably gonna get a
- 32:22reboot soon. You sort of feel like we're in that sort of era of
- 32:23reboots. Thats the film's probably gonna get rebootedbe even like a series even.
- 32:28But I just enjoyed Flanders being the Killer MM, which we hadn't seen up
- 32:32to this point, which I thought it was just a really really unique spin
- 32:35and for some reason, as a kid, Homer singing the guests, if
- 32:37you gud to put the fog arts in absolutely slavy slay me. I think
- 32:42so similar with the Devil and Homer Simpson as well, like recasting, like
- 32:45this opportunity to recast Flanders as these evil characters or villains or whatever, like
- 32:52it does become so much more unsettling, and like some of his mannerisms like
- 32:58really translate and because enjoys it. Yeah yeah, and it's become oh yeah,
- 33:02these same things of this like very wholesome person like could be creepy when
- 33:07you recontextualize it, like yeah, And I apologize listeners, but I still
- 33:12have not watched the Flanders episode, the horror one from a couple of years
- 33:15ago where to take on Fargo. Oh yeah, yeah, a serious Flanders.
- 33:22Any good? I heard it's great. It's a two parter. Again,
- 33:24I think it was like a bit oversold for me because I thought it
- 33:27was fine. But again I don't think it needed to be two parts.
- 33:30But like I do think, I think I do think of modern Simpsons,
- 33:36if something's like pretty good, they oversaw it like it's amazing because they're so
- 33:39used to comparing it to what's been coming. Because there was an era there,
- 33:44say, from like twenty three through to like twenty eight ish where it
- 33:46was just like, it's not that great as it used to be. And
- 33:50as a Simpsons fan, it's okay to acknowledge Simpsons isn't as good as it
- 33:52once was. I do feel the last couple of seasons have been pretty good.
- 33:54You know, I've really enjoyed the last couple of seasons was a serious
- 33:59fans that was about two years ago, right, two or three years yeah,
- 34:01something around there. I think it was a thirty three or thirty two
- 34:05one. Yeah. I think it feels like the ones that are sort of
- 34:07non canon esque seem to be the ones that get the most hype now because
- 34:10they're different. And yeah, like last season, I feel like there was
- 34:15like I think like eight or nine episodes that were like non canon episodes,
- 34:19and it almost feels like the Simpsons rioters are gone. Okay, how do
- 34:22we get the most hype for this show? Let's do ones in a non
- 34:23cannon and ones. It feels like a very special, unique episode because they
- 34:27did so many of them last season. Yeah, and I mean they worked
- 34:30a varying effect. I know that one which is like almost like a clip
- 34:35show with the hackers overtaking. Yeah, least of the boy Scout. I
- 34:38believe that got like a lot of hype. Like I found it like a
- 34:43fucking confusing mess. But like I think the Good Ones podcast really like got
- 34:47behind that one. And yeah, the writer of the host of that podcast
- 34:52did a big article for Vultures, you know, declaring the Simpsons are back
- 34:55and all that fucking bullshit that you get. But I think sometimes and I'd
- 35:01mentioned this on my chat with Warren Butt of Darkness Warren Evans, who's got
- 35:06a new book at the moment about Simpsons merchandise. It's pre order it now,
- 35:09But we're sort of saying, how, you know, I feel like
- 35:12sometimes these super fans or people who do other podcasts or things like that just
- 35:16go a bit over the top because it's like it's like an inn with the
- 35:21show, like it's okay to save in episodes, not that great, you
- 35:24know, and it's not anything You're just gonna be honest, you know,
- 35:29I'll honestly say that, like I watched the new Simpsons and I enjoy them.
- 35:31Are they as good as they once wear? No, let's not go
- 35:34over the top and say, oh, they're back and the greatest thing ever.
- 35:37And it's just like, do you really believe that. Yeah, well,
- 35:39because I mean, Simpson's in the modern age. It's like, I
- 35:44think the writers probably struggle with this, And that's why there's so many of
- 35:46these parody or like non canon event episodes is because I mean it goes back
- 35:52to the Poochy episode. The characters just can't have the impact that they once
- 35:54had, So you know, how do we keep them relevant or how do
- 35:58we keep people excited about the show still? And Yeah, it's doing these
- 36:02extended things that I think, Yeah, is breathing a bit more life into
- 36:06it and giving them something a bit something different to hook their teeth into,
- 36:12which isn't yeah, beholden to any rules or whatever that should stick to the
- 36:16classic episodes. Like there was a recent episode called like My Life as av
- 36:20log which like retold the Simpson story is like as if they were influencers like
- 36:24YouTube stars or whatever like that, and yeah, of course that does not
- 36:29fit in with the cannon, but like, using that format, they were
- 36:31able to do a very unique episode that was yeah told through a series of
- 36:37YouTube videos and like led to some really interesting direction and stylistic choices that yeah,
- 36:43and yeah, similar with them doing the big extended it parody, which
- 36:47I didn't love. But I watched it and I was like, it just
- 36:51feels like I don't know. I watched it and I felt very underwhelmed at
- 36:54the end. Yeah, No, it was just a bit flat. But
- 36:58like I think, like from a stylistic perspective, I think I nailed it.
- 37:02Like I think it looked great. It's like again, the score sounded
- 37:07great. But yeah, just the material itself left me a bit wanting.
- 37:09Yeah. Same, Yeah, that was something I was going to bring up.
- 37:13Oh yes, so, and I hate being it because it makes me
- 37:15stuff. I'm talking myself up. But now, when I went for dinner
- 37:17that time with Matt Salmon and Phil Resenthal Right, So getting back to earlier
- 37:21how you were talking about trying to find ways to seem relevant. We're out
- 37:25dinner and we're sitting down at this place coming on what it's called, and
- 37:28the guy behind the but immediately recognizes the film. He's like somebody if you
- 37:31feel and you don't at the back and gets the chef and stuff. They
- 37:34come out. Theyre talk about and blah blah blah, and he's like,
- 37:36are you are you like the his producer is what he says to Matt,
- 37:38right, and then Phil goes, no, no, he's not not my
- 37:42producer. Do you you watch The Simpsons and the guy go They all go,
- 37:45na, no, I haven't watched it for a long time. Oh
- 37:50and Matt's like, story of my life. Matt's like, yeah, I'll
- 37:52get the chop liver. Thanks. Yeah. It was just like, oh
- 37:57my god, it's PILs and Thor are you the producer? No, No,
- 38:00I work on the Simpsons. Ah, I felt. I just sat
- 38:06in the middle, going, this is let's touch on another one, the
- 38:10one that I absolutely loved as a kid a daughter. I still do it
- 38:13to this day. We touched on it on our previous one with Gory Death's
- 38:16Death. Ah, say, is Nightmare on Evergreen Terrace with Nightmare on Elm
- 38:20Street? Yes, just in particular that opening shot, how it's just what's
- 38:24how would you look watercolor? I guess you could say the backgrounds and things
- 38:28like that. Yeah, there's no outlines, Yeah, yeah, it just
- 38:30it looked immediately, you know, it's something different, and just touched on
- 38:34the Nightmare on Elm Street series the other way it looked, but just the
- 38:37various ways that Willie would kill the kids and things like that. I just
- 38:42it's not necessarily a gory episode, but it's a scary one. Oh yeah,
- 38:45and especially like because we were saying last time as well, when Willie
- 38:52in the dream his tongue wraps around Martin and chokes him like that itself is
- 38:55very goofy, but it's like when it actually cuts to Martin experiencing the death
- 39:00in real life area, Yeah, that's way scarier than actually seeing like,
- 39:06yeah, groundskeeper Willy like probably put his hands around him. And I mean
- 39:08we're desensitized to that. We've been watching Homer do that to Bart for years,
- 39:12but yeah, having him experience it and then no one being able to
- 39:15do anything about it is terrifying. Yeah, I mean the death of Willy
- 39:20is pretty god but they do it in such a funny way that he sort
- 39:22of it takes the the I don't know what's the shock value out of it.
- 39:25You know, this guy's burning to death, Yeah, but actually see
- 39:30him burn to death. We've see him on fire, but when he's actually
- 39:32dying again, you just seen the people look at him with just such disdain
- 39:36as like, why are you interrupting this meeting? Yeah, Kirk needs to
- 39:39talk about the two Spaghetti Dinners come on. Yeah, yeah, but yeah,
- 39:43I just I thought that was one that we definitely to measure because it
- 39:45was just so great. I love it. Yeah, well again just recasting
- 39:49the Simpson's characters perfectly. There's I don't think you could have put anyone else
- 39:52besides groundskeeper Willy in that role. And it was like, I don't know,
- 39:58just the threatening Scottish accent to it or all, like it translated perfectly,
- 40:02you know what I was talking about of like taking the characters, taking
- 40:05a source material and finding a way to meet it, like in the middle
- 40:08somewhere, and it was just perfect, like and being able to use the
- 40:13grounds keeper tool sets in his kills as well, the rakes, the lawn
- 40:17mower, all that stuff like it it makes sense to the character and feels
- 40:22like more or less on theme with Freddie Freddy k Krueger as well. It
- 40:25just feels like too that Willy, of all the characters on the show,
- 40:30he seemed to be the one I always wanted to get revenge, Like the
- 40:32world's against him, like you know, it's against Willy, So it felt
- 40:36like he was the perfect fit as well. Yeah, yeah, yeah in
- 40:38Whacking Day as well. Yeah, I'll get you at the first chance I
- 40:42get or whatever. Escape what if they're dead, sir, Actually we should
- 40:50have mentioned at the start because our mayn Matthew Perry passed away yesterday. Yeah
- 40:54ri ip, fuck that. You know, many celebrity deaths that really like
- 41:00affect me. But for some reason, like you know, I felt so
- 41:05sad yesterday. I felt the world was sad, and I get it.
- 41:09Of all the cast members, he's probably the least shocking one to have gone
- 41:14this way, right, and it felt like, you know, this was
- 41:16inevitable in some way. As morbid as that sounds, especially when you read
- 41:22his book or you listen to his audio book and stuff, it just felt
- 41:24like he was such a sad person, which made me feel sad because he's
- 41:30brought so many laughs. But it's like when he passed away yesterday, it
- 41:34just felt like everyone was just like ah, because he was such a big
- 41:37part of our childhood growing up in the nighties, Like Friends was like when
- 41:40it comes to live action shows, so Simpsons was the biggest animation show.
- 41:45It was either Friends or Seinfeld, right, like they were the Simpsons of
- 41:49the sitcom world. Yeah, well, I mean I was actually talking about
- 41:53it. I was doing a stream yesterday with a bunch of people, and
- 41:57like we were saying, yeah, these like like it's perfectly normal to feel
- 42:01like the effect it even though we didn't know them personally and we sort of
- 42:05have these parasocial relationships. It's like, but yeah, when you look at
- 42:07it, like we spend a lot more time with them than we do a
- 42:10lot of people in our lives, and certainly in the case, like I
- 42:14wasn't a big fan of friends or anything, but like when they were always
- 42:19there exactly, and like I love the movies he was in. I was
- 42:22a big fan of Whole nine and Whole ten Yards when I was a kid,
- 42:25and like and when he like fifty four is still young man, and
- 42:30like these moments you're just like I think you still had some gas left in
- 42:36the tank. You know. It's just such a shame. Yeah, what's
- 42:38for the reason I'm sad about it too, is that it like when you
- 42:43realize what Dawns and you are, they can never like do another reunion.
- 42:46Yeah, it's when one's gone. It just feels like the whole thing's gone.
- 42:51And he was to me, we're doing obviously the one about friends podcast,
- 42:53and I'm revisiting the show, and I don't know. Everyone says that
- 42:58Russ and Rachel was the big store worry, but for me, I'm watching
- 43:00all guy. He's like the rock for this show for me, Like he's
- 43:02the one who actually keeps it entertaining. Yeah, yeah, the reliable one,
- 43:07like yeah, the like because I think, yeah, especially because like
- 43:10Joey and Phoebe were sort of a bit more out there characters as well,
- 43:14and like he was more of like the audience conduit in a lot of ways.
- 43:16Yeah, he was the most relatable for me. We'll go back to
- 43:20visiting it now as like a thirty five year old. He's definitely the most
- 43:22most relaitable. But I want to touch in him because he makes an appearance
- 43:25in House of Wax. Was it actually him? Is it not him?
- 43:30Oh? I just assumed it. It was like they like certain it was
- 43:35him, right, were doing the review for it. Le's go House of
- 43:37Wax. It's the takeoff of Demoncy. That's what the episode to take off
- 43:40of. Yeah, Matthew Perry as Matthew Perry. Oh that is so cool.
- 43:45I had no idea. Yeah, but yeah, sorry. Just to
- 43:50bring it quickly back to the Simpsons, because you know, yeah, he's
- 43:52the first of the six Friends to pass. But like, yeah, we
- 43:57haven't had to have that conversation about like the core six cast for his cast
- 44:01of The Simpsons yet, Like yeah, that's immediately what I thought of him,
- 44:06Like, wow, it feels like I've lost a member of the Simpsons
- 44:08cast because it's going to happen in probably in the next ten years, you'd
- 44:13think, wouldn't Yeah, I mean I think Harry Shearer is pushing eighty.
- 44:15It is like, yeah, they're they're it's surprising that they're still going,
- 44:21like yeah, and yeah, you do wonder how much the fan backlash would
- 44:25have been a few years ago if one of them passed and they tried to
- 44:29replace them. But you know they were going to do that when Harry Shearer
- 44:31quit the show, so like who knows what they'll do. Yeah, and
- 44:35he quit the show a week before we started the podcast, because our second
- 44:38episode of the podcast we did was who should replace Harry's here? Yeah,
- 44:44thank god he didn't leave the show in the end. But yeah, so
- 44:45it's just him being in House of Wexle. I love House of Wax so
- 44:50good. Another one that doesn't get mentioned anywhere near enough. You know,
- 44:52Pierce Brosna is fan fucking tastic in that episode. Yeah. Oh, like
- 44:58again taking these charming, like good from the outside, you know, characters
- 45:06and then just recontextualizing them, like yeah, it felt like he had a
- 45:09lot of fun doing that voice as well, going a bit more sinister but
- 45:14still doing it in a very pierced Brosman way. I think is Yeah,
- 45:16what I'm trying to get out here, like it is so yum yum yum
- 45:21yum y But yeah, it's a perfect voice for sort of howl because it's
- 45:27like a bit two thousand and one a space odes see, isn't it as
- 45:29well? Yeah, definitely, yeah, But yeah, it's just the idea
- 45:32of like AI scares this right as just the human race, the idea of
- 45:36AI being more powerful than I always it will always terrify us, right terminated
- 45:39in it, you know, But just the idea of being in a house
- 45:43that you want to live intil it's just super convenient, but also that that
- 45:45threat of it could actually turn on you at any second. Yeah, that's
- 45:50exactly I feel like in the next day fifty two hundred years, that's going
- 45:53to be the life we live in. Is just our life will be super
- 45:58convenient thanks to robots and AI, but there's always gonna be a threat that
- 46:01what happens when they turn on us. Yeah, I mean he was hoping
- 46:07they're still too stupid to do it anyway, because like we were having the
- 46:08like I was hanging out with my family on the weekend, and like my
- 46:12brother loves his Google Home, but like just lately, like he'll go,
- 46:15oh yeah, play a playlist of like nineties alternate rock or whatever, and
- 46:20we'll get in a loop of just the same three songs and it's like,
- 46:24Okay, Well, I mean AI, yeah, it's coming for a lot
- 46:28of things, but it's still too fucking dumb to finish us off. I
- 46:30haven't succumbed to things like Google Home and things like that, and I don't
- 46:34think I ever will. I just refuse to. Yeah, I'm just like
- 46:37if I want my TV to turn up, I'll just push the button I
- 46:38want to go, Hey, Google turn up. Yeah exactly. Nah.
- 46:43I mean it was the same when like the Xbox One came out and they
- 46:45were like, oh, all these cool voice features, and it's just like
- 46:47it's easier to press directions and a button. I don't want to talk to
- 46:52it. But my mum she gets her phone out. It's like the idea
- 46:54of the technology is just so standing in that they have they refuse to actually
- 46:58do what they used to do. My Mom's like, what's the number for
- 47:00Gelong Footy Club? I'm not just look it up? Google it? Google?
- 47:04What's the number for Geelong Football Club? No, I don't know,
- 47:06Google, what's the number for Geelong? I'm like, Mom, just fucking
- 47:08type it into Google? Like no, no, no, this works.
- 47:10I'm like, eventually here's what I found on the internet. Ah fuh.
- 47:17But bending back to to see I feel like I may have confused you.
- 47:22So I said horror parodies, but you've just done parodies in treos of horror.
- 47:25Is that's sort of the mindset you've gone with? Yeah, pretty much,
- 47:30but a few of them are horror parodies, Like the other one I
- 47:34wanted to bring up was Fly versus Fly, which is a parody of The
- 47:37Fly, which is like, apparably more so the original not the Uninet and
- 47:40eighties version. Oh is that right? Yeah? Because like if you haven't
- 47:45seen it, yeah, Dave Cronenberg's The Fly is a fucking incredible horror movie,
- 47:51Like Body horror movie, and yeah, Jeff Goldbloom is so good in
- 47:54it, like I think, yeah, it's and again doing the sort of
- 48:00Simpsons thing is sort of taking the general idea and just doing their version of
- 48:04it, Like we're not doing one of these parodies where it's recasting anybody.
- 48:07It's still the Simpsons, but it's just what if the fly happened to them?
- 48:13And so yeah, we start out the segment with a bunch of incredible
- 48:17gags around the teleporter. Homer setting it up, like going to all that
- 48:22effort to set up the teleporter so we can take a piss from the lounge
- 48:24room is just so yeah, so quintessentially Homer. Yeah, it's so good,
- 48:30and I love the punching as well. Yeah. But then yeah,
- 48:37when Bart eventually and yeah, turns the pets into it a cat dog and
- 48:43then just a butt butt that could be leasing like, yeah, another good
- 48:49thing of like taking a very grim prospect of yeah, but accidentally fucking up
- 48:52and himself turning into a fly sized fly and then making a you know,
- 48:57a Bart sized fly in the process, but still having so many great gags
- 49:01around it and still making it a funny segment. Okay, Okay, it's
- 49:05yours sugar, but yeah, I almost love how late the Simpsons just embraced
- 49:08their new flyboy. Yeah. I was like, that's fine, it's like
- 49:14he's and your child. Yeah. Another one that I want to also bring
- 49:17up was we touched on this in our Gory ones with the Frankenstein parodies.
- 49:23Right, so the Chance of three, I want to say, where burd
- 49:28snaps out the brain so good? Also, can we bring up Frankenstein as
- 49:32well? Have you seen Frankenstein? Yeah, the season sixteen one, Yeah,
- 49:37something like that where Yeah, so basically it's Frank's father. Just basically
- 49:42the end sequence of him ripping the brains out of the scientists mortified me as
- 49:45a child. Yeah, it's just brain's getting snapped out of heads. I
- 49:52just love that. Yeah, he'd gotten to the point with his superhuman strength
- 49:54that he could just like twist top the top of people's skulls off and just
- 49:59in a bunon brea from one, You're like, it's so good. And
- 50:01yeah, bringing in Jerry Lee Lewis, you know the yeah, Jerry Lewis
- 50:06rather uh the inspiration behind Frank's voice I thought was an amazing gap for them.
- 50:10It really was Yeah, a more recent one as well that I really
- 50:14enjoyed, which caught me off guard with how good it was. Was our
- 50:16normal activity. Oh okay, I don't think I remember that one filming.
- 50:21It's the Paranormal Activity one. The Demon's coming to get Maggie because Marge made
- 50:24a deal with the devil to I think it was how her sisters get their
- 50:28souls back as a charge. She said the Satan that her first, her
- 50:32third child or something belong to Satan, something along those lines. But because
- 50:36there's something about the Paranoractivity seat like series. I remember the first one like
- 50:39absolute spoit, the share of him, and then it was just no repeat,
- 50:42at the repeat, at the repeat. But I love the What I
- 50:45loved about the original one was how low the budget was. And it's just
- 50:49like a quiet room and a saucepan drops. There's no like Gore, there's
- 50:52no special effects. It's something that can happen in any house and over the
- 50:57other day. I never day. It was recently one of our things fell
- 51:00out of the padre and I was like, oh shit, this is paramlativity.
- 51:04Let's just it's so simple, that concept. But but yeah, I'm
- 51:07just gonna hear what Treehouse of Horror was actually in un Yeah, I think
- 51:12it was twenty three, so from season twenty four. Yeah, just looking
- 51:15at that, that was a pretty good Treehouse of Horror and the whole like
- 51:21they had the greatest story you ever hold it like, that's not a parody
- 51:22of anything. It's like, by the way, Yeah, for those of
- 51:25you who haven't checked it out, go to like just the Wikipedia page for
- 51:29all the Treehouse of Horror episodes. They've got a column for possible references or
- 51:35what they're parodying or whatever. And I reckon that is just a great media
- 51:38list right there. I think that's a podcast idea. Waiting to happen is
- 51:42just yeah, reviewing the source material and then reviewing the Treehouse of Horror segment.
- 51:45But yeah, the great Yeah, and then it's got Barton Homer's Excellent
- 51:51Adventure which is like so fun that one. Yeah back to the Future parody
- 51:53thing. Yeah yeah, yeah, that one's one of the I remember watch
- 51:57that going this is like classic era. I love that Excellent Adventure one.
- 52:01What was the fine what was the other segment in that one? Say the
- 52:04great story as whole as you were saying, yeah, yeah, where it's
- 52:07just like I think it's because the Host and Biggs thing was happening around that
- 52:10time, and yeah, a black hole appears in Springfield and then yeah,
- 52:15it starts out people like hey, with a great place to throw our garbage,
- 52:17and then the whole gets bigger and bigger and bigger, and I think
- 52:21could go on to inspire the video game Donut County. Shout out, Shout
- 52:24out to Donut County. That's an excellent game. Now, is there any
- 52:28other parodies that weren't horror based that you wanted to bring up that weren't horror
- 52:31based? Um? No, not really. The other big one that I
- 52:36had was for Terror at five and a half feet. How awesome is that
- 52:40segment? Yeah, and a parody of the Twilight Zone segment episode Terror at
- 52:46twenty thousand feet. It's yeah, about a guy on a plane and John
- 52:51lithgals. We were saying, yeah, yeah, So yeah, this is
- 52:52sort of a self recommend for the second two segments of the Twilight Zone the
- 52:57movie, because yeah, anyone that doesn't know, Yeah, the Twilight's Own
- 53:01movie that came out in the eighties, produced by Spielberg. The first two
- 53:05segments, like one is Uncomfortable because there was like real on screen depths associated
- 53:09with it, and like it's just a bit of an uncomfortable watch. And
- 53:14then the second segment is Spielberg's really schmoltzy like retirement home segment that is just
- 53:20so Sacharin that yeah, it gave me double diabetes. But the second two
- 53:24segments ones it's called It's a good Life and this is what they parody in
- 53:31a Treehouse of Horror two with Bart Stream like the kid with all the notly
- 53:35Powers mare and Nancy Cartwright is actually in that segment in that movie. Yeah,
- 53:39yeah, yeah, And that's directed by Joe Dante who Gremlins and like
- 53:45a bunch of other stuff. He's just such a Small Soldiers. I want
- 53:47to say, yeah, yeah, absolutely that man, that was a surprisingly
- 53:51great movie. And in that one, I want to do a podcast with
- 53:55someone who's got in the nineties, maybe yourself, where we just go back
- 53:59and revisit the film that we gret with that people just don't give enough credit
- 54:01for its Small Soldiers is number one on my list, mate. Yeah,
- 54:04oh, and it's one of these ones which is actually so ahead of its
- 54:07time in a lot of ways, Like the special effects were so good Yeah,
- 54:12it was incredibly It's funny because it's viewed as like a box office bomb
- 54:15and like a forgotten thing, but I think it could have potential to be
- 54:20a cult hit. It is so good. Everyone remembers those small Soldiers toys
- 54:22being in chops. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I never got myself a
- 54:28chip, has it? I bought one later on in life. Yeah.
- 54:30I ad The Archer, but like I remember that a movie that was based
- 54:34it was almost like a movie made to sell toys, and I get that,
- 54:36but it was almost like taking the mickey out of that as well.
- 54:37It was just it was the way it was handled. I love that movie.
- 54:40I absolutely love it. Yeah, and Phil Hartmanson I think it's his
- 54:43last filmed on screen performance as well. Really was that? I thought it
- 54:49was before Jingle all the way? Uh No, well, I don't know
- 54:52if filming wise, but I know it was released posthumously and like, yeah,
- 54:59there's a little bit like in the mid or after credits as well,
- 55:00which just shows a deleted scene of like, yeah, him goofing up a
- 55:06take or something like that, and said, yeah, I've dedicated to Phil
- 55:08Hartman and all that. Yeah, I says edgingle the way ninety six because
- 55:12that it was ninety eight. I think small sol isn't it. Yeah,
- 55:14yeah, yeah, shout out to small soldiers. It's a bit off topic.
- 55:16Let's do it. Let's do it. I'm glad I've finally found someone
- 55:20that appreciates movie as much as I have. Yeah. But yeah, so
- 55:25also in Twilight's on the movie. Yeah, the final segment, the fourth
- 55:28segment is yeah, the John lithgar Tara at twenty thousand feet and like him
- 55:32just being this panicked guy who's like already got anxiety about being on a plane
- 55:37and whatever, and like it's very relatable, and the way that they sell
- 55:42his fear and anxiety is so artfully and so masterfully done. And then yeah,
- 55:45the whole gremlin thing, and like, unlike the Simpsons version, you
- 55:50don't really see a lot of the monster or apparition on the side of the
- 55:52plane, and like that becomes so much scarier. Like but I mean,
- 55:57I think the Simpsons also do a very good version of this where yeah,
- 56:00you do see a lot of the grammar, but again it's like the clown
- 56:01without pity thing. No one believes Bart. All right, let's do one
- 56:06more each before we wrap this up. All right, Yeah, go for
- 56:08it. I'll pick one. All right, I'll go through what I've got
- 56:10one list here, let's do a join one here. Night of Living Dead
- 56:14that the dolls for zombies so iconic and just felt like the obvious one that
- 56:19goes you didn't at zombies. Everyone's scared of zombies. Yeah, like we're
- 56:22talking about don't have a cow mankind before. It's like, it's actually surprising
- 56:25they haven't done more zombie parodies in the Simpsons because there's so many different takes
- 56:30on it, Like, I mean, especially like it felt like five or
- 56:32ten years ago we had zombie overload with the amount of shows and movies yeah
- 56:37around the topic, but yeah, still back in the day where there were
- 56:42only a few key properties. And yeah, Night of Living Dead certainly,
- 56:45like again, like this was that sort of story just coming into the Simpsons
- 56:49world, and I loved it. One of the greatest gags is earlier seasons
- 56:52you shut the zombie flan he was a zombie. Yeah, I love that
- 56:59one. I'm gonna go with the blob mmm. So we touched on it
- 57:04in aw Gruesome one podcast was a couple of weeks ago when he ate the
- 57:07cat and he killed the cat. Well, killing the cat was a gruesome
- 57:08death. Have you seen the Blob the original one? No? I haven't.
- 57:12Actually, just again this idea of just this blob going around that you
- 57:15can't stop. No matter how much you run, you ain't getting away from
- 57:19it. I thought they did a really good take of the Blob here,
- 57:22incorporating to Homer, and it has a great appearance from who sings big Butts
- 57:29So mix a lot, So, Mix a lot. You do you remember
- 57:30the song in that one? No, it's actually it's been a hot minute
- 57:34since I watched that segue. So it's like, I like big guts and
- 57:37I can nut lie. But it's just like a completely take. But he's
- 57:39sang that this complete parody. It's a great remix of the song. But
- 57:43I really really enjoyed. I believe it's called what it called the Married to
- 57:47the Blob marriage. Yeah, it's called Marriage to the Blob. Yeah,
- 57:51from Trios of Horror seventeen. If you haven't seen it, we just reviewed
- 57:53it recently on our show some season eighteen, in the ear of the Simpsons
- 57:57when they were making the show, So that the quality is very very miss
- 58:02yeah, miss Like it's there's a couple of like okays, but it's been
- 58:07pretty miss so fast season eighteen. But yeah, I really enjoyed the Blob
- 58:10parody in that Trace of Horror. Yeah, it was one of those ones
- 58:15where it's like, oh, I'm surprised the Simpsons hadn't done this before,
- 58:19you know, all the Homer is Fat jokes that they could have done that.
- 58:22Yeah, certainly the Blob is one of these stories that they could tell
- 58:24through that. Yeah. Well, the Halloween of Horror episode for me was
- 58:28a big one for that where it's like, how have they gone twenty plus
- 58:30season season twenty six to twenty seven without doing a non It had to be
- 58:35a cannon Halloween episode. Yeah, because that episode, to me is one
- 58:38of the greats. I absolutely love Halloween of Horror. I watched it recently
- 58:43again because I'm speaking to Carolyn Demena next week and can she wrote the episode.
- 58:47It's just such a great Lisa episode. Yeah, And it's one of
- 58:52these ones because it's like, yeah, you forget that Lisa is meant to
- 58:54be eight sometimes because she's basically a teenager, and this is one that like,
- 59:00yeah, we got to see her be a kid again, but in
- 59:02a very still lease a way that like didn't feel like it was a character
- 59:06break or anything either. Yeah. Yeah, and it's genuinely scary as well.
- 59:10I love Hell in the Horror but all the time in the world for
- 59:13it. But what's your final one you want to talk on today? Talk
- 59:15about? Yeah, I want to throw a shout out to the Treehouse of
- 59:20Horror fifteen. So from season sixteen, I believe, Yeah, four beheadings
- 59:23and a funeral. So this is like a combination one which is like the
- 59:29Jack of the Ripper story, but also mixing it in with Sherlock Holmes.
- 59:32Again, this is one of the Simpsons, like they're casting in this world
- 59:37and so like Lisa's your Sherlock Holmes and Bart is your Watson. I'm really
- 59:42not liking that one. When we did the review for it, yeah,
- 59:45I remember going, I'm pretty sure my memory of it was so there's no
- 59:50jokes here. It's pretty much just how funny is a British accent? Yeah,
- 59:52I think that was my thing. But yeah, go, what do
- 59:58what do you like about it? Well? I think this is another one
- 1:00:00that like improved when I saw the movie from Hell the Okay, So yeah,
- 1:00:06Johnny Depp and it's the Jack the Ripper story, and I think the
- 1:00:09scene with the opim dem was maybe a bit unnecessary. Like I actually do
- 1:00:13remember when it first came out and watching ANU on Channel ten that they were
- 1:00:16like, ooh, this is a heavy drug use warning and it was like,
- 1:00:20oh, what are they doing in this treehouse of Hirah? But yeah,
- 1:00:23largely unnecessary scene, but yeah, it was one where I think,
- 1:00:28like just mood and casting, I think I really nailed, and like,
- 1:00:32I think I was totally swerved by the ending as well, that it was
- 1:00:37Chief Wigham in the end and they managed to incorporate using an eel pie into
- 1:00:40the solution as well, which yeah, just sounds disgusting and so totally British.
- 1:00:45I think the best parodies of the ones where much like the Shinning as
- 1:00:49you touched on it's probably wait is the best is where you don't have to
- 1:00:52have seen the source material to appreciate how great it is. M Yeah,
- 1:00:58there's there's so many episodes that as I've got older and watched more movies and
- 1:01:01things like that and I have seen what they're referencing, I'm like, ah,
- 1:01:05that parody is so great where if you're watching something, they're parodying something
- 1:01:08and it's just lost on you. I feel like, even if you can't
- 1:01:12find it funny, it's probably not a good parody. Good parody needs to
- 1:01:15be funny, whether you've seen the source material or not. Is one of
- 1:01:16those parodies where it's funny if you haven't seen the source material, but if
- 1:01:20you've seen the source material, it's even funnier. Yeah, exactly, Yeah,
- 1:01:23it's an enhancement because yeah, still haven't seen the Shining. The Shining
- 1:01:27still holds up, and I almost don't want to watch The Shining because I
- 1:01:30feel it'd be a disappointment. Now, yeah, it won't live up to
- 1:01:32the quality of the SIBSS. I've seen bits of it because you used to
- 1:01:36always be on TV. I think it goes like it's a really long movie.
- 1:01:40I feel like I can't remember the Shining. Let's see how what the
- 1:01:43runtime is for the Shining. The Shining run time is, where do you
- 1:01:47find the fucking right? One hundred and forty six minutes, which is a
- 1:01:50long time. Yeah, that's an evening. But look when it was on
- 1:01:54TV, you go for like three plus hours for you to throw commercials into
- 1:01:57that as well. Oh yeah, like one of the last times I watched
- 1:02:00commercial television was like I was just scrolling through, Oh, True Lives is
- 1:02:04on and it already being a long movie, and then every fifteen minutes being
- 1:02:08interrupted by ads. I'm like, man, there's a great movie, but
- 1:02:10I have to give up. This is just not the way to watch it.
- 1:02:14How did we do it? Mate? We had no choice. Yeah,
- 1:02:19is either that or drop thirty bucks on the VHS. And my Mum's
- 1:02:22like, you got five videos to buy this year? What are you picking?
- 1:02:24Yeah, exactly exactly. But anyway, that is some of our favorite
- 1:02:29parodies that Simpsons have done. I focus on horror. You've done mostly horror
- 1:02:31as well. You threw in the Superhero one, which could have been a
- 1:02:34good horror movie. As you're saying, I like the idea of that being
- 1:02:37a horror film. Yeah, it's just yeah, it's just a really genius
- 1:02:40character thing. And then yeah, Zena as well, what a great guest
- 1:02:44star as well for this, Like yeah, not necessarily comic book or horror,
- 1:02:46but yeah, much in that collector thing, like high fantasy sort of
- 1:02:52thing. And she does great. And Zena doesn't fly. Not Zena.
- 1:02:54I'm loosely gowless. It's a shame that you couldn't get Kevin Soilbell as well.
- 1:03:00I think these days you were like, probably good they did now,
- 1:03:04but at the time would have felt relevant. Yeah, maybe they tried and
- 1:03:07then they couldn't, and then they were disappointed. You've still one joke.
- 1:03:13That's my one Kevin Sorbo joke, because think it's everyone's Kevin and I don't
- 1:03:16know whether it's true, but I'm going to just believe that it's true.
- 1:03:20That's what happens that he read this direction. Alrighty guys, this has been
- 1:03:24our discussion on the best horror parodies in the since type. You enjoyed it,
- 1:03:29Elliott, plug all your stuff before we get out of here. Yeah,
- 1:03:31if you like Simpson's content, I'm reviewing Simpsons also over at the Simpsons
- 1:03:36Index with for a few of the first nineteen seasons of the show when randomly
- 1:03:39going through the latest twenty five years or whatever it is now. And yeah,

- 1:04:17The first episode is like our take on a zombie sort of thing, but
- 1:04:21it's like an alien overtaking a small town, and that one's called it came
- 1:04:27from the bottom of the ocean, but also from space, so that I
- 1:04:30feel like that sort of gives you the general vibe that we're going for.
- 1:04:33It's like it's slucky, it's horror, but it's also very fun in campy
- 1:04:36at the same time. So go check that out. That's pulp Fury Radio
