- 1:03Speaker 2: hot one it is, sir? How are you?
- 1:06Speaker 3: Yeah, it's warmed up pretty good obviously. In fact, following
- 1:10Speaker 3: Sunday's scrimmage, I couldn't resist asking Jeff Levy, you know
- 1:14Speaker 3: what's hotter the West Texas planes you grew up on
- 1:17Speaker 3: the Oklahoma planes you worked out a few years or
- 1:20Speaker 3: here a deep South heat and humidity. And he said,
- 1:22Speaker 3: it's a it's a real question, a fair question. All
- 1:25Speaker 3: he knows is it was really hot Sunday when they
- 1:27Speaker 3: get out there. But he was actually pleased with that
- 1:31Speaker 3: because it showed when they ran. I think the first
- 1:34Speaker 3: teams went forty seven snaps and the second team's forty
- 1:37Speaker 3: or so snaps. Nobody fell out with the heat. They
- 1:40Speaker 3: all seemed to handle things conditioning wise. Of course, they
- 1:43Speaker 3: had yesterday to recover. Today was the first day where
- 1:45Speaker 3: they were back at practice, but no reported issues from
- 1:49Speaker 3: that as far as their conditioning or holding up. So
- 1:52Speaker 3: that's a good start to the preseason there. With the
- 1:54Speaker 3: first scrimmage in the books, I will have to go
- 1:57Speaker 3: in and say that no media did not get to
- 1:59Speaker 3: watch a scrimmage. So everything we know so far has
- 2:02Speaker 3: been told us by the three players we talk to today.
- 2:05Speaker 3: There will be another scrimmage this weekend and also closed
- 2:08Speaker 3: to media, though I believe m club members put in
- 2:11Speaker 3: a boost for that. Good organization will be allowed to
- 2:15Speaker 3: attend with membership and such as that. So they've entered
- 2:18Speaker 3: the full scrimmaging part of it, and so far as
- 2:22Speaker 3: best we can tell, so good.
- 2:24Speaker 2: David Murray talking to Mississippi State Football ball. I was
- 2:27Speaker 2: a couple of weeks away from opening kickoff as they'll
- 2:29Speaker 2: take on Louisiana mon Row at Davis Wade Stadium, Tuesday
- 2:32Speaker 2: edition of the program. Yeah, David, I think the biggest
- 2:34Speaker 2: thing always is, you know, you hope you don't have
- 2:36Speaker 2: any injuries, and it sounds like so far everything's clean
- 2:38Speaker 2: on that. What do we know about you know, we'll
- 2:41Speaker 2: go defensive side of the ball, and it's always so
- 2:43Speaker 2: hard to tell, like you said, especially for you guys,
- 2:45Speaker 2: because if things are closed up, some reports about defense,
- 2:49Speaker 2: maybe what this defense is looking like, maybe some changes
- 2:52Speaker 2: we may see. Has there been any, you know, reports
- 2:55Speaker 2: of anything like that. Defensively, well, the first.
- 2:58Speaker 3: Thing to report again is this strictly taken from players
- 3:02Speaker 3: comments that they're enjoying it. I see whether it's defensive line, linebackers, safeties, corners,
- 3:08Speaker 3: they're all enjoying this defensive approach under Zach Garnett, which
- 3:12Speaker 3: mimics what we heard back in spring as well. Now,
- 3:14Speaker 3: we did get to watch a couple periods on last
- 3:17Speaker 3: Monday and Friday, No. Eleven on eleven, so we had
- 3:20Speaker 3: to race around catch position groups. I came away thinking,
- 3:24Speaker 3: you know what this defense can run. I'm not going
- 3:28Speaker 3: to say they were exactly slow last year, but they
- 3:31Speaker 3: weren't up there with real serious sec speed in some situations.
- 3:36Speaker 3: I like what they're doing now. The defensive front seems
- 3:40Speaker 3: much more mobile, that they haven't lost the size. Other
- 3:42Speaker 3: than Diesel Moy who was way overweight last year. Now
- 3:46Speaker 3: he's trimmed down and actually looks going a young recognized
- 3:49Speaker 3: the same guy watching him fire off in drills such
- 3:52Speaker 3: as that. The defensive ends certainly have great lateral movement.
- 3:55Speaker 3: I like what the inside linebackers were doing, and I
- 3:58Speaker 3: really believe that the outside linebackers defensive ends, they're really
- 4:02Speaker 3: going to raise the game as far as pass pressuring
- 4:06Speaker 3: this year. Judging by both limited observations and then following
- 4:09Speaker 3: up the comments from the players as well, they are
- 4:12Speaker 3: getting after the quarterbacks at least as much as they're allowed.
- 4:15Speaker 3: What was the comment I heard from Will Whitson last
- 4:18Speaker 3: week that Jeff Levy gets a little nervous when anyone
- 4:21Speaker 3: gets too close to Kamario Taylor, which ought to be true.
- 4:26Speaker 3: Otherwise they're getting back there, and I think this defense
- 4:29Speaker 3: is going to be seriously upgraded. We'll get a chance
- 4:31Speaker 3: to talk to je Jefferson this morning. I don't have
- 4:34Speaker 3: that feature on Jean's stage as well, and they like
- 4:37Speaker 3: the competition that the wide receiver group is giving them
- 4:41Speaker 3: where they're short, medium, long routes such as that. So
- 4:44Speaker 3: the attitude seems excellent, and frankly, I just think physically
- 4:47Speaker 3: they are far far ahead at the last couple of
- 4:49Speaker 3: years defensively as a whole.
- 4:52Speaker 2: You know, David, that's promising news, especially if you're talking
- 4:54Speaker 2: about a team last year Mississippi state that in the
- 4:57Speaker 2: last two years and what was it two years ago,
- 4:58Speaker 2: I believe they had ten sac collectively as a unit,
- 5:01Speaker 2: and then last year they doubled that at plus one.
- 5:03Speaker 2: I think it was twenty one. To you know, if
- 5:05Speaker 2: they can get back to really putting pressure, I mean,
- 5:08Speaker 2: because you know, if they can amp this defense up,
- 5:10Speaker 2: it really calls you know, some turnovers create a you know,
- 5:13Speaker 2: higher turn of a ratio of sorts that's on a
- 5:15Speaker 2: positive side that's only going to help this offense that
- 5:18Speaker 2: we know that's going to blackly be pretty explosive.
- 5:23Speaker 3: Yeah. One thing about it too is when I talked
- 5:25Speaker 3: to Jefferson, I said, well, you know, your best friend
- 5:27Speaker 3: is the cornerback is a pass rush and he just
- 5:30Speaker 3: didn't said, yeah, they're doing their part up there, and
- 5:33Speaker 3: it isn't. And you mentioned sack totals. That's great, we wrote.
- 5:37Speaker 3: Reporters love talking about the sacks and such. I'm more
- 5:40Speaker 3: concerned about the hurries than even the kind of hurries
- 5:42Speaker 3: that don't get credited. There just force the other team
- 5:45Speaker 3: out of rhythm. Even if you don't create a turnover,
- 5:48Speaker 3: you basically cost them a down in that situation. But
- 5:51Speaker 3: I do think, as you say, this defense will be
- 5:53Speaker 3: able to force some more turnovers just by making offenses
- 5:57Speaker 3: operate a little faster they want to and you know,
- 6:00Speaker 3: flipping it to the other side. There, they're getting a
- 6:03Speaker 3: legitimate test by the speed of these wide receivers. Now
- 6:06Speaker 3: I've mentioned before it's not a big group. We talked
- 6:10Speaker 3: this morning to San Frisco McGee and while no big
- 6:15Speaker 3: guy of any stretch, he's one of the larger wide receivers.
- 6:18Speaker 3: This is a small receiver group, but it is fast.
- 6:21Speaker 3: So now it's going to come down to the recognition
- 6:24Speaker 3: and reaction by Cambarrio to get the ball to him,
- 6:27Speaker 3: and as always, going back to the offensive line play
- 6:30Speaker 3: and I'm going to withhold judgment on that other than
- 6:33Speaker 3: to make this one comment. I think I said it
- 6:35Speaker 3: last week after watching a practice, but I'm going to
- 6:37Speaker 3: emphasize it after another day's observation. Last week, they looked
- 6:42Speaker 3: like an SEC line and we can't begin to talk
- 6:46Speaker 3: about the radical change that is from the twenty twenty
- 6:49Speaker 3: four season and almost as much sober last season. I
- 6:54Speaker 3: like the physicality of the offensive line what we've seen
- 6:56Speaker 3: in the drills so far, and I'm not worried about
- 6:59Speaker 3: physicality running backs at all. I haven't seen the whole
- 7:03Speaker 3: lot from the tight ends. A few running patterns out there,
- 7:06Speaker 3: but they're working on pass protection from that group as
- 7:09Speaker 3: well the day as we were checking it out. So
- 7:12Speaker 3: I guess sum it all up and say that so far,
- 7:15Speaker 3: at least in the non contact periods, they are serious
- 7:18Speaker 3: to work on the passing game. I've got a feeling
- 7:21Speaker 3: from what they tell us what's to get into contact work.
- 7:24Speaker 3: The run game is taking the lead in this offense,
- 7:27Speaker 3: because that's where Jeff Levy really wants to go with
- 7:29Speaker 3: that offense this year.
- 7:32Speaker 2: Talking with David Murray talking Missippi State football camp, it
- 7:34Speaker 2: is a Tuesday. Bulldogs open up a week from Saturday
- 7:37Speaker 2: against Louisiana Monroe in starvill Davis Wade Stadium. Yet David talking,
- 7:41Speaker 2: I was going to go there next to the running
- 7:43Speaker 2: back room is you know, it's going to be interesting
- 7:45Speaker 2: to see with Jeff Leavy this year, they's got Camaro Taylor,
- 7:48Speaker 2: a guy that will make you play eleven on eleven,
- 7:51Speaker 2: and then Fluff bothwell in that backfield, plus some really
- 7:53Speaker 2: good young talent to true freshmen from the state of Mississippi,
- 7:57Speaker 2: Cooper Crosby from Gulfport, JJ Hill from two. What this
- 8:01Speaker 2: run game, you know, how it kind of fits into
- 8:03Speaker 2: this offense and will they be a little more not
- 8:05Speaker 2: necessarily run heavy, but you know, run it a little
- 8:08Speaker 2: bit more with the quarterback that's mobile to try to
- 8:10Speaker 2: set up that passing game.
- 8:13Speaker 3: Well, for a comparison, we talked to LJ. Prudon this
- 8:15Speaker 3: morning and I said, what's it like blocking for this
- 8:18Speaker 3: running game? And he just lit up and said, even
- 8:21Speaker 3: when they make blocking mistakes against this defense, the running
- 8:25Speaker 3: backs are still creating yards on their own there. Now.
- 8:27Speaker 3: They prefer not to make mistakes, obviously, but it gives
- 8:30Speaker 3: you a clue of how seriously State wants to run
- 8:33Speaker 3: the ball. You mentioned Fluff bothwell, obviously it's the lead
- 8:35Speaker 3: dog in this and we talked to Xavier Gaton this
- 8:38Speaker 3: past week. You know, Colin Wilson. Haven't heard a lot
- 8:41Speaker 3: about him here in preseasons, but he was the talk
- 8:43Speaker 3: of spring camp on how drastically he's improved his game
- 8:47Speaker 3: as a running back. There and then the two freshmen.
- 8:50Speaker 3: You just watched them moving, thinking, oh yeah, these two
- 8:54Speaker 3: freshmen out of Mississippi high school ranks, they are the
- 8:56Speaker 3: real deals at running back at this point, this has
- 8:59Speaker 3: got to be one of the better running back rooms
- 9:01Speaker 3: I've seen at msby State in many years, and I
- 9:05Speaker 3: do mean many years in that regard. Now, I also
- 9:08Speaker 3: have seen them doing a lot of drills catching the
- 9:11Speaker 3: ball where they're behind the line, at the line, always
- 9:14Speaker 3: facing forward moving. I think you'll see them use it's
- 9:19Speaker 3: not air raid routes they're running, but it's definitely get
- 9:22Speaker 3: the ball to them quickly and let them beat the
- 9:24Speaker 3: guy that they're matched up with, especially if you get
- 9:27Speaker 3: some blocking from the wide receivers. Now that's where maybe
- 9:29Speaker 3: some of my concerns about receiver size come and play.
- 9:32Speaker 3: But if they got the right technique, they can spring.
- 9:35Speaker 3: These running backs do some things. So I really expect
- 9:38Speaker 3: everything that Jeff Levy has said since the twenty twenty
- 9:41Speaker 3: five season ends was he's committing to the run game,
- 9:44Speaker 3: but that doesn't necessarily mean just line up and slam.
- 9:46Speaker 3: It also means deception, quickness, versatility, and using the short
- 9:52Speaker 3: throw game as an aspect of the running game as well.
- 9:55Speaker 2: Make sure to get him on x at David Murray.
- 9:58Speaker 2: Of course you can get him on Jean's page too.

- 10:06Speaker 2: to stay cool out there, my friend. When we talk
- 10:07Speaker 2: next week, it will be game week.
- 10:10Speaker 1: Well.
- 10:10Speaker 3: I keep reminding myself that anybody who complains about the heat,
- 10:15Speaker 3: I don't want to hear from them. Come winner. I'm
