- 0:00I'm Millie Condon, Welcome back, Iowa Sports Radio Network, hour
- 0:03number two, bottom in the hour. Scott Dr. Man covers college
- 0:06football for The Athletic. He was at Kinnock Stadium on
- 0:11Saturday afternoon, so we'll get his thoughts on that College
- 0:14Football Playoff as well as we March on here.
- 0:17He'll join us about 1:30. Mr. Monday Night makes an
- 0:19appearance about 10 minutes or so before 2:00.
- 0:22Right now. Let's get Bama Bob in here as we
- 0:24recap the weekend in college football. 48 hours from now.
- 0:28We'll be previewing what's coming up in college football in
- 0:31a short week. How are you, Bama?
- 0:34Doing great was a good weekend too, isn't?
- 0:37It really is. Last week wasn't bad.
- 0:39There were certainly some highlights in in all the
- 0:41conferences. But yeah, this this one coming
- 0:43up here special to say the absolute very least.
- 0:47Well, Trent, let's start in the Big 12.
- 0:48Of course, we've talked about Iowa State as they looked as
- 0:52well as as good as they've looked in in a long, long time.
- 0:54Nice win from them. How about the rest of the
- 0:56conference, Trent? Anything.
- 0:58Stick with you. You know, we mentioned that BYU
- 1:01just don't like watching them that much.
- 1:03I I guess there's something about them.
- 1:04I don't think they're one of the best 10 teams in the country.
- 1:07But that aside, I want to shout out Arizona State.
- 1:11Yeah, that was close game for a while.
- 1:12It was you lose Levitt, he's likely going to enter the
- 1:16portal. There's rumors tumult happening
- 1:19there and they're an upset away from playing with all the
- 1:23injuries that they've had in the conference.
- 1:25So what do? They, I think they need a BYU
- 1:27loss. It's an upset.
- 1:29I'd have to look for sure. But they need an upset.
- 1:31Regardless, though, with this team banged up, I didn't believe
- 1:34in them in year #2 I thought there was going to be a step
- 1:37back. And with all these injuries, to
- 1:39be this close to another appearance at Arizona State.
- 1:43We've seen this program for all our lives.
- 1:44Yeah, once a decade they have a special year, and then they fall
- 1:47right back to being Arizona State.
- 1:49And how about Jeff Sims, who we thought stunk and had and both
- 1:52of them stops prior to? Kenny Dillingham, who's a
- 1:55football coach. Yeah, no question about that.
- 1:58But what if he's Arizona? He's going to be getting some
- 2:00calls too. I think so.
- 2:01Too, He coached a lot in the SEC and you need to find people for
- 2:04these jobs. Yep, Arizona's had a nice turn
- 2:06around in their season as well. Colorado stinks.
- 2:10Utah, Kansas State. What a shootout. 100 points
- 2:13where 98 scored in that football game.
- 2:15Bama, the Big 12. Yeah.
- 2:18Again, this is what we thought it would be.
- 2:19And, and although there is a little separation, I think
- 2:22there's more separation than we thought because you going into
- 2:25this last week, you've got two teams that if they win, they're
- 2:28in, right. So Texas Tech, I don't see them
- 2:32losing in West Virginia. I don't see BYU losing to
- 2:35Central Florida, who I think has to make it.
- 2:37I mean, they got to make a trip from Orlando to Provo right over
- 2:40Thanksgiving weekend. How motivated are they going to
- 2:43be? So I, I think the big question
- 2:46is if, if, if we get that championship game of Texas Tech
- 2:49and BYU and if BYU, if BYU loses, are they going to be left
- 2:55out as a two loss team? And you know, we can debate that
- 3:00probably later, but I just think it's, it's is it fair?
- 3:04No, but listen, I mean, the committee has an SEC problem
- 3:09that we'll get to in a minute. But I think if BYU wins, I think
- 3:14then Texas Tech is going to get in at large, I think, which I
- 3:17don't. And not that they've got any
- 3:19great wins more than BYU does, but you know, they just look
- 3:23better. I guess they passed the eye
- 3:25test. They've been higher ranked all
- 3:26year and everything else. So I don't I don't know that one
- 3:28is the best scenario was fair. I don't think anybody wants to
- 3:31see Utah in that Big 12 championship game.
- 3:34And I agree with you on Arizona State.
- 3:36They were my pick to win the conference.
- 3:37I don't think it's going to happen.
- 3:39And you're right on Dillingham. There are some SEC teams that
- 3:42have him on their radar. It looks like Auburn might be
- 3:46kind of honing in on on some of all the coach at Tulane.
- 3:51But Dillingham is on their radar.
- 3:53Would he leave for Auburn? You know, it would be a shame if
- 3:58he did. I think he likes it out there.
- 4:00I think he is, you know, he's, he's trying his best.
- 4:04It's just can you sustain it? Can you sustain success out
- 4:07there? But you also may have a bit of
- 4:10an easier path to a playoff at Arizona State than you would if
- 4:13you get into the meat grinder at a place like Auburn or Florida
- 4:16or wherever else. But overall, not a bad weekend
- 4:20for the conference. And it really looks like we're
- 4:22we're going to get BYU and Texas Tech in that championship game.
- 4:25And that's going to be, there's going to be some bids on the
- 4:28line in that game, some playoff bids, not only for the Big 12,
- 4:32but for probably the SEC as well.
- 4:35To the Big 10, Trent, your thoughts?
- 4:37Big 10, Well, I'm already looking forward to this weekend
- 4:40and everything that's on the line.
- 4:41But with a look back upon it, we talked about Nebraska.
- 4:45Just a complete no show. That is an embarrassment.
- 4:48Speaking of embarrassments, Bielema taking his group up
- 4:50there. There's still a lot to play for
- 4:52and you get bludgeoned by Wisconsin.
- 4:55Did the Badgers, we were scoffing at it.
- 4:57We were making fun of Wisconsin football.
- 5:01Did they make the right choice? Right to do so at the time.
- 5:04But did they make the right choice?
- 5:07Look, you're not going to be able to go out.
- 5:08You're not going to be able to outspend LSU and Penn State.
- 5:11You're going to be at best, what, eighth in line to get your
- 5:14coach? Let's invest.
- 5:16Let's spend on the players. And.
- 5:17Let's see what happens. And this team has responded
- 5:20since Bickel's coming back, they have responded.
- 5:22I think we were wrong maybe on that.
- 5:24Front. Perhaps.
- 5:25Perhaps. Yep.
- 5:26And they'll finish Minnesota, right?
- 5:29Yeah. From the X game.
- 5:31What weekend? Oh, man, What about Oregon?
- 5:35USC, Bama, Let's start with your Oregon USC game.
- 5:38Obviously, it was huge for USC. It was big for Oregon.
- 5:41Yeah, Oregon. Did they send the message
- 5:43they're not going to play for the Big 10 championship in all
- 5:46likelihood. I mean, I don't see Purdue
- 5:49upsetting Indiana. I just don't.
- 5:51What about Michigan beating Ohio State?
- 5:52I'm not going there. You know who would play in the
- 5:54Big 10 Championship if that happens?
- 5:55What would it be? It'd be Indiana, Oregon.
- 5:59Sign for that game, kind of be kind of be kind of fun.
- 6:02I don't think it's going to happen, but Bammy, your thoughts
- 6:04on the Big 10 this past week? Yeah, I think Oregon, I think
- 6:07they solidified their spot no matter what.
- 6:10Now I say that and let's say we do get, you know, the upset that
- 6:15we talk, you know, Michigan, Michigan wins, right?
- 6:17And they get into and that puts Oregon, I guess into the Big 10
- 6:21championship game. You know, they lose, let's say
- 6:24they lose to Washington and they lose that game.
- 6:27Now for a sudden, you know, there are three lost team,
- 6:29right? I think they're in no matter
- 6:31what. I think they're fine.
- 6:33I think they're just fine not being not making the Big 10
- 6:36champion. I really I really do.
- 6:38I think it's I think they're Georgia.
- 6:40Georgia doesn't want that game. Ole Miss doesn't want that game.
- 6:43OK, they're they're all fine where they're at.
- 6:46I think they're all in, but it's going to cost them, you know,
- 6:50potential home game and I that's a that's a big issue.
- 6:54I listened to me a story is as much as Oregon is continues to
- 6:58be USC, they've really had their own they kind of had their
- 7:01destiny in their hands. I think they win that game.
- 7:04I I think I think they would have been in because I think
- 7:06they beat USUCLA and that gets them to 10 and two.
- 7:09And once again, it's not the disaster it has been, but once
- 7:13again, Lincoln Riley can't win a game.
- 7:15He absolutely has to win and to, you know, to to get into a
- 7:19playoff and and you know, are they happy with that?
- 7:23Maybe they seem to be. I don't hear his name on any,
- 7:27you know, any hot list, you know, around the SEC or anywhere
- 7:30else. And then of course, you, you
- 7:31know, you know, I don't know that he's on a hot seat at USC.
- 7:35But listen, you mentioned Illinois and Nebraska, the 2
- 7:39probably the most disappointing teams in the country this week.
- 7:43I mean, Illinois, I'm not sold on Wisconsin still, I understand
- 7:47they've been better since they announced that Pickles coming
- 7:49back. But you know, let's see it next
- 7:51year, right? Let's just see, let's see them
- 7:53take a a bit of a leap next year versus this year.
- 7:57Nebraska, I don't know what that was.
- 7:59I mean that that it was bad. I don't it was bad is what it
- 8:02was. You know, Indiana, Mitch Perino
- 8:05for all the crap that I think, you know, that the SEC is taking
- 8:09for wedding weekend and I get it.
- 8:10And you know, they're throwing shade at, you know, what is the
- 8:12Chattanooga State I think is or whatnot.
- 8:16Yeah, but I think was Indiana on the bye week, am I right?
- 8:19Yeah. So what's the difference?
- 8:21Right. I mean, seriously, what's the
- 8:22difference? You play a nobody or you take a
- 8:24bye week. Anyway, we'll get into that
- 8:26later. Just makes my blood boil.
- 8:28Michigan's the key to this guy's Michigan beats Ohio State.
- 8:31I think they're in the playoffs and then that's going to put
- 8:34probably 4 Big 10 teams if they don't, I think the Big 10s down
- 8:38to 3. And that's going to open the
- 8:40door for a bunch of other, you know, again, the SEC problem
- 8:43that this committee has right now.
- 8:45And who's the 4th? I mean, they're just not a four
- 8:47team unless Michigan pulls an upset.
- 8:49Yeah, you're not just putting it.
- 8:51You're not putting a four team in there just because they
- 8:53should have a fourth that no, it's team's resume and it's not
- 8:56going to be there and it's going to be SEC heavy and the country
- 8:59will be annoyed by it. But BMI, you guys are used to
- 9:01that. Well.
- 9:01I. I think it, I think it.
- 9:03Yeah, Right. Exactly.
- 9:04I think in Michigan beats Ohio State.
- 9:06I think the big thing gets 4th. I think they're going to have
- 9:08India. But if they don't, they're
- 9:10getting 3. And you can't put a, you cannot
- 9:12put a fourth one in. No, I don't think no matter
- 9:14what. So, you know, it is what it is.
- 9:16Yeah. We're, you know, we're used to
- 9:17the hate down here, so we'll just get more of it.
- 9:20So it deservedly so sometimes, I'll say that.
- 9:23Mentioned earlier, the Minnesota Northwestern game was fun, if
- 9:27for nothing else that the ending of it and the fact that
- 9:30Northwestern punched their ticket to bowl eligibility at
- 9:336:00 and 6:00. There's a Wrigley Field was part
- 9:34of the venue that got my attention.
- 9:36All right, let's get to the SEC, Trent.
- 9:38Before we finish up in the ACC, we'll throw Notre Dame into the
- 9:41mix in that one. Your thoughts on the SEC this
- 9:44past weekend, Trent? There wasn't a lot to watch,
- 9:46let's be honest. And we talked a little bit
- 9:47earlier about Oklahoma. That defense is just so elite.
- 9:50Yeah. And if Metir can continue to get
- 9:52better, maybe there's a team that not going to win a national
- 9:54championship. Did he run the ball more this
- 9:56weekend than he had? A little, a little bit, yeah.
- 9:59What do you have in the game? 18 carries, more than I even
- 10:02thought, not only for 60 yards and sacks are included in there.
- 10:05But yeah, he's running a little bit more like that Oklahoma
- 10:08defense, though, more than anything.
- 10:10My biggest take away, though, is just the quit.
- 10:12I mean, Kentucky, what an embarrassment.
- 10:14LSU 1310 against the Hilltoppers.
- 10:18Just yuck. Who does LSU have this week?
- 10:22Oklahoma and Norman. Oh boy, yeah.
- 10:25That's a team. Now what?
- 10:25Kentucky is they did come in eight and two.
- 10:29So I mean, they're not like one of these, you know, Eastern
- 10:31Illinois teams, that's true. But.
- 10:32They also lost 25, six to Florida International.
- 10:35I understand. I'm not, I'm not excusing it.
- 10:37I'm saying LSU kind of a win they maybe had to have not, not
- 10:43that anybody's on those jobs are on the line or anything because
- 10:45they're going to come in and clean house anyway.
- 10:47But yeah, that was that was shocking.
- 10:50I kept kind of waiting for them to pull away and never did.
- 10:53Missouri, Oklahoma close game to him and to Texas, Arkansas, that
- 10:58was that was kind of eye opening.
- 11:00That's a really good rivalry obviously with the Jerry Jones
- 11:03factor in there and Art's threw for just under 400 yards.
- 11:06Is he figuring it out, boys? He's.
- 11:09Getting there a. Little bit, I guess.
- 11:12I mean, you would hope so by now, right?
- 11:15I mean, where do we 11 games in? I know they've had a tough
- 11:18schedule, but I mean, it's not like he's devoid of weapons.
- 11:23And I still go back to, I'll say this, he's improved since
- 11:26Gainesville, right? He made some bad decisions in
- 11:29that game. And I think that game is going
- 11:31to cost him a playoff that I don't think it matters what they
- 11:33do this week against Texas A&M. This is I think is a pride game
- 11:37only. I don't think they're in no
- 11:40matter what happens. And This is why I think the
- 11:42committee has an SEC problem. You look back at last week.
- 11:47I mean, you know, Alabama, you know the concern there.
- 11:52And I watched, you know, more of that game than I should have,
- 11:55right? The game was never competitive,
- 11:56but Ty Simpson threw two more interceptions.
- 11:59Eastern Illinois. Yeah, this last two weeks have
- 12:01not been good for his Heisman candidacy.
- 12:03I. Don't Well, right.
- 12:04And what it's really not good for is the Iron Bowl this week
- 12:07because that that's a night. Game too.
- 12:09Let me stop you. Isn't it?
- 12:10It is. How many times has that game
- 12:12been played at night? Or not a lot, but.
- 12:15It is. It's in which usually it has
- 12:17been 2:30 right in those CBS days because either 11 or the
- 12:21other or both of them. And that was the prime time CBS
- 12:23game, you know, mainly Alabama, but you know, a few times Auburn
- 12:28where there was a lot on the line.
- 12:29And that was so it wasn't now it ends in the dark, right, because
- 12:33of the, you know, it ends at six, you know, 6630 at night.
- 12:36But there's very few prime time kickoffs.
- 12:38And I'm going to tell you this game is in play, buddy.
- 12:41I mean, there is just no question.
- 12:44And we'll get to it Wednesday. This game is in play, and
- 12:48Simpson and Alabama really need to clean up the rack.
- 12:51But the reason I think they've got an SEC problem is Alabama,
- 12:55if they win out, they're in and there's nothing anybody can do
- 12:58about it. And they're not going to
- 13:00eliminate anybody by winning, right?
- 13:04I think Tennessee Vandy this week, man, I think the committee
- 13:07would like Tennessee to just win and take Vanderbilt out of the
- 13:10equation because otherwise a 10 and 2 Vanderbilt with losses to
- 13:14Alabama and Texas, that's a playoff team, right?
- 13:19And you've already got George, you've already got Georgia A&M
- 13:22and Ole Miss are solidly in. You've got Oklahoma sitting
- 13:25there with two losses and Alabama can play their way in.
- 13:27And there's nothing anybody can do.
- 13:29So it's I mean, it, we're getting ready for it down here.
- 13:32You're going to get, I think you're going to get 5.
- 13:34You could get 6 SEC teams. But you know, this past weekend
- 13:39there's just, you know, Vandy again keeps winning and and I
- 13:43mean, probably, I think I don't know if he's going to win the
- 13:45Heisman. No, I don't think he will.
- 13:47But he's going to be in New York and man, just get ready for that
- 13:50show because you saw it, I mean, when you saw it as Senior Day
- 13:53with his whole family going there, 1819 people.
- 13:56And by the way, can Brian Kelly be more of a turd for not
- 14:00showing up for his son on Senior Day for LSU?
- 14:02He didn't show up for that. No, he didn't.
- 14:06His son walked out by himself, unesported on senior night.
- 14:11Brian Kelly couldn't be bothered to show up.
- 14:13And maybe he was trying to save, you know, any booze or whatever
- 14:16from LSU. Thing I bet that's what it was,
- 14:18showed up. Yeah, I mean, I don't Brian
- 14:20Kelly's an ass, but who? Cares though, I mean but.
- 14:23It's about your son. It's about your son at that
- 14:25moment and he you're right, it would have been booze that would
- 14:28have been rained down as your son's being announced.
- 14:30That's also tough. But your son is wearing a free
- 14:34Brian Kelly T-shirt, you know, OK, that he's showing up.
- 14:38So, I mean, what is he going to care, right?
- 14:40I mean, you know, again, the guy's got $49 million.
- 14:43He's not hurting. But I just think you could have
- 14:46shown up. And I understand that there
- 14:48would have been some some booze, but I think there would have
- 14:50been a few, maybe enough class, which is hard to say to a place
- 14:54like LSU. They're not really known for it,
- 14:57you know, I think, I think maybe they could have shown a little
- 14:59more class. But yeah, he didn't, he didn't
- 15:01show up for whatever reason. I'm sure it was because of the
- 15:04reaction that that his son would have received.
- 15:06And but again, just hard to be a fan of that guy.
- 15:11ACC Trent, Georgia Tech fell behind 28 zip, got back into the
- 15:14football game. Then they exchanged every time
- 15:17it looked like maybe they're going to be able to pull this
- 15:19one out. Pitt had an answer.
- 15:20How about the fake punt from Marduzzi and he calls himself a
- 15:22dumb ass in the post game press conference that looked like they
- 15:25were going to blow it. But you know what?
- 15:27He was right about the game last week.
- 15:28Didn't matter. It didn't matter.
- 15:30Absolutely, he was right. It's all in front of them.
- 15:32It's all in front of them. Also for my Duke Blue Devils,
- 15:36the dream is still alive so. What do they have to do?
- 15:38They got to win. Yep, we need favorites to win
- 15:41outside of one upset and SMU makes their way out to Cal and
- 15:47Sega. PAL telly and company.
- 15:49And Wilcox just got fired. The coach just got fired.
- 15:52If we get a dead coach bounce, Cal pulls the shocker.
- 15:56Here are your ACC standings. Virginia is your lone 7 to one
- 15:59team and then we have a five way tie at six and two with Pitt,
- 16:04SMU, Georgia Tech, Miami, Duke. Based on the tiebreaker opponent
- 16:10win percentage in conference, the Nuke Blue Devils will be a
- 16:14win away from playing in the College Football Playoff at 8:00
- 16:17and 5:00. Assuming that they outranked the
- 16:20group of Five, the yes, and what would the committee do in that?
- 16:25Case and the ACC out. At least the ACC champion out.
- 16:30The champion can put fascinating.
- 16:32Can they stop putting Miami in the bracket tomorrow in that
- 16:34Snoopin TV show? Well, I'll TuneIn and watch
- 16:36Trent. I'll be watching Fuse.
- 16:39Zama, the ACC was what for you? Disappointing from Georgia Tech.
- 16:47The start you mentioned they kind of fought their way back
- 16:49into it, but you don't see a Brent T team just dominated like
- 16:55that. And I mean, when it was 28,
- 16:56nothing. I mean, there was no resistance.
- 16:59First of all, thank you for texting me because I didn't
- 17:01realize. Yeah, I mean, it was just
- 17:03nothing, right? And and I'm watching this.
- 17:05And then, of course, you know, you flip back and you know that
- 17:08they're again, they just couldn't get a stop when they
- 17:10needed. I don't know if they're looking
- 17:11to head to Georgia, but regardless, I mean that was that
- 17:16it probably cost them a game. It cost them a path, I think to
- 17:21the to the ACC championship game.
- 17:24You know, you mentioned Duke. I mean, again, this conference
- 17:27doesn't deserve a playoff team. I think we can all agree on
- 17:30that. I think they're going to get one
- 17:32no matter who went, even if it's Duke, What are you going to do?
- 17:36You're going to, you're going to put the American Conference.
- 17:38They would, but yeah. But I mean, that's the group of
- 17:43five. So.
- 17:43So you're going to get a two group of five teams then?
- 17:45No, just one. I think the highest ranked group
- 17:48of five team will be the ranked high.
- 17:50Will be one of the four, one of the four will be one of the
- 17:54four. Top.
- 17:55Yeah. Well, there you go.
- 17:56OK, You know, I hope that happens.
- 17:58I really do too. And I haven't.
- 18:00It sounds like we're not that far out of the realm of
- 18:04possibility. Now, Duke would obviously, I
- 18:05think have to win sure, in the ACC championship game for that
- 18:08to happen. But anybody can beat anybody in
- 18:10this, this crappy conference. You know, maybe we can, you
- 18:13know, not talk about him next year if we can get Trent off the
- 18:15bandwagon. Well, he'll be he'll be leading
- 18:18this, leading the parade, so. Oh yeah, that's true.
- 18:21That is true. Man Band next year.
- 18:24Notre Dame did Batman. Were they sending a message?
- 18:27Is that why they just kept scoring?
- 18:28I mean, they're beating Syracuse does nothing for them unless you
- 18:32beat them by, in this case, 63. I mean, I don't know if that'll
- 18:35get the committee's attention. I, I don't think it's ways it
- 18:38shouldn't. I'll put it that way.
- 18:39It shouldn't sway anybody. Notre Dame's going to be in and
- 18:44we can all argue it. Listen, whether you beat, you
- 18:46know, beat them 35 to nothing, 42 to 370 to 7, whatever it was,
- 18:50it just it doesn't matter. Syracuse is terrible and you
- 18:54know, Notre Dame's going to finish ten and two and they're
- 18:56going to have the two losses to to, you know, A&L moves a
- 19:00potential SEC champion and of course, Miami close loss there.
- 19:05Who they beat. Their best win right now is
- 19:07Navy. I mean, I think if you really
- 19:09look at it, I mean, USI mean US USC, I guess, but based on
- 19:15record, it's Navy. He's got 3 losses.
- 19:18So, but you really stack that up and who they beat.
- 19:21But you can say the same thing about Ohio State really.
- 19:23I mean, and so we all know Ohio State's going to be, you know,
- 19:26probably going to buy no matter what happens, assuming they beat
- 19:29Michigan. But again, were they sending a
- 19:33message? Maybe, but anybody on the
- 19:36committee that goes, wow, look at what they did 70 to 7.
- 19:39I mean, if if you're looking at that, then I think you, you're
- 19:43just you don't belong on the committee And you we could I
- 19:45tell you what we're there's a lot of people down here arguing
- 19:48that there's some people that don't belong on that committee,
- 19:50like the guy that came out and was, you know, all of a sudden
- 19:53criticizing Alabama's run game as a reason for knocking them
- 19:57down to 10. I'm like, really, that's what
- 19:59we're looking at now. Their inability to run the ball.
- 20:01Forget the fact they're winning. It's how they're winning all of
- 20:04a sudden. So, but you know, that's.
- 20:06For another day, they control their own destiny and can shut
- 20:08everybody up. Talk to you on Wednesday,
- 20:10brother. Yeah, take care guys.
- 20:12Thanks a lot. Good to talk to you, Bama.
- 20:13Bob, Trent and I take him spin around college football.
- 20:15Real quick on this. JJ McCarthy isn't in concussion
- 20:19protocol. Oh, really?
- 20:20You imagine, Trent? So what are we doing here?
- 20:24Suffered symptoms on the way on the flight home last night.
- 20:27What did you you found an unbelievable stack.
- 20:31This is amazing. This is amazing.
- 20:34This is from Anthony Amico on Twitter.
- 20:37JJ McCarthy now ranks 850, first out of 852 in EPA per drop back.
- 20:43Estimated pass per attempt per drop back since the year 2000.
- 20:47The only player below JJ McCarthy is Jamarcus Russell.
- 20:52852 quarterbacks all. But don't compare him to
- 20:56Christian Ponder. Don't bring up some of the draft
- 20:59bus. That's what Viking fans continue
- 21:01to think. You're cooked.
- 21:03He stinks. He's bad.
- 21:04Friend, he cannot go through his progressions.
- 21:07He has absolutely no touch. He's cooked.
- 21:11Max Brosmer, come on down. It's got to be right.
- 21:14It's got to be. Oh, and Speaking of that, so
- 21:17last year about this time, I was steadfast that if Darnold, if
- 21:21you're going to move on from him, you don't want to pay it,
- 21:23that you keep Daniel Jones. And obviously in hindsight, they
- 21:26should have done it. You know, the quarterback that
- 21:28they need to get this offseason. That the Vikings need to get the
- 21:31Vikings. Need to go out and get a veteran
- 21:33if you're not going to draft somebody.
- 21:34What? What?
- 21:35What? What conference?
- 21:36The American Football Conference.
- 21:37All right, so let me get in front 'cause I'm going to narrow
- 21:39this down and I'm going to surprise you, 'cause I'm going
- 21:41to pull this out of my, you know what?
- 21:43Hang on a second. Now, he's not in the east.
- 21:46Nope, he's not in the north. No, he's, I'm going to come back
- 21:57to that one. All right.
- 22:01I'm, I'm stumped. He's in the South.
- 22:03He is in the South. That's the only place.
- 22:05Who is it? It's Davis Mills.
- 22:08Yeah, Davis Mills look good. He's he's been OK.
- 22:10He's been OK, even, you know, he's held, he's held the ship,
- 22:12he's held the Fort rather. Go back to when he got thrust in
- 22:15there against your Broncos. You remember that.
- 22:16I do. And and the inexplicable
- 22:18decision by them to throw the ball backed up at their own 10
- 22:20yard line. That game's going overtime and
- 22:22we could be having even a more different they're three and O
- 22:25since he's become the starter and very well should be 4 and O,
- 22:28but I think they should have won that game again, the Broncos the
- 22:29last they didn't. So as a starter 3 and O Davis
- 22:32Mills, 27 years old, he's been solid when he's had to come into
- 22:36the past. There's the guy, there's the guy
- 22:38to go. They.
- 22:38Drafted him to be the guy, didn't.
- 22:40They did, and then he got Stroud, what, two years later?
- 22:43Two years. Later, 2 years later I think,
- 22:45and they get Stroud back. You know how I feel about this
- 22:48Houston team, Trent. I'm really high on this group.
- 22:50That defense is great. That defense is really good and
- 22:52the receivers are OK and the running back's OK CJ Stroud, I.
- 22:57CJ. Stroud the rookie.
- 22:59Yeah. He was OK, he won rookie of the
- 23:02year and now sophomore, you're stuck.
- 23:05I like what he marks. Don't like that offensive line
- 23:09you? Know defensive, that defensive
- 23:11as good as there's in the league.
- 23:13I'll take a time out Scott Docman next.
- 23:15Miller and Condon, glad you're with us on the Iowa Sports Radio
- 23:17Network. Hi, Miller and Condon, welcome
- 23:19back. Just passed 1:30 on a Monday.
- 23:22Off the bench, top of the hour. Lucas and Sean take you in till
- 23:265 O clock. Mr. Monday night's going to make
- 23:27an appearance coming up here in 15 minutes right now.
- 23:30Scott Dockerman joins us from The Athletic.
- 23:33He was in the press box at Kennick Stadium on Saturday.
- 23:36We'll get into that College Football Playoff speculation
- 23:39with the unveiling of the latest rankings coming out tomorrow.
- 23:42And Doc's got Iowa in Florida and Iowa State in.
- 23:47They played the day before. Where do you have Iowa State
- 23:49doc? It's against Missouri.
- 23:51Nowhere is that game. Texas The Texas full in Houston.
- 23:56That's that's how you see it as a pursuing along those bowl
- 23:59lines. Just real quick on this, if does
- 24:02Iowa, Nebraska matter as far as winners gets Florida loser gets
- 24:08Las Vegas. Is is that scenario in play do
- 24:12you think Doc? Yeah, I think so.
- 24:14And it's it's especially the case after Wisconsin beat
- 24:19Illinois over the weekend against Illinois.
- 24:21So Illinois would would have had an edge probably in Vegas more
- 24:27than it would have in, you know, in, in Tampa when it came to
- 24:32that. Because then, you know, you can
- 24:34jump an 8, an 8 and four can jump a nine and three, but a
- 24:38seven and five can't. So that would be different.
- 24:41But now that they can only be 8:00 and 4:00 at the most, if
- 24:44they beat Northwestern, then you know, I, I think that it means
- 24:49that the winner goes to worst, we'll go, the winner will go to
- 24:54Outback and the loser will probably end up in Vegas.
- 24:57A win is a win. I would get to win 2017, but fun
- 25:00fourth quarter, big comeback even down, you know, 1710 you're
- 25:05like, well, this at best is going to overtime and they get
- 25:07to win the regulation. So a lot of there, but there
- 25:10were three quarters before that and outside of Canton region, a
- 25:12whole lot of negativity. What do you think?
- 25:15I mean, you could hear the Bluebirds, they were out in full
- 25:19in full force passing game couldn't get going again against
- 25:22a defense that had not been very good against the pass this year.
- 25:25Would have a loss meant anything if they would have found a way
- 25:28to put that one in the L column, Would it would it change the
- 25:31perception the offseason anything or hey, good to get the
- 25:35win. But in the grand scheme of
- 25:36things, that really it doesn't mean much, positive or negative.
- 25:41I don't know. I mean, I think winning is
- 25:42better than losing in this In this case, it's was helpful.
- 25:47I mean, you know, throughout the course of the year, there's
- 25:49always games that every good team has to face their worst
- 25:55day. And it's how you get through
- 25:58them that matters in the long run.
- 25:59I mean, you could say that about, say, Indiana playing Penn
- 26:02State. That was a game that they had to
- 26:05get through Iowa had to get through Penn State.
- 26:06So I, I think the other day they didn't play very well, certainly
- 26:10on offense. And I don't think Mark Gramsci
- 26:11had his best day at all in the 1st 3/4.
- 26:14But they got through it and I think that's what matters.
- 26:17You know, we could, you could dwell on the what ifs and the,
- 26:20and the hyperbole of the situation.
- 26:23It wouldn't have been helpful. I mean, I'm sure people would
- 26:26have complained about it, you know, all offseason and they
- 26:28probably still will anyway. But overall, I don't think it's,
- 26:32you know, the fact that they won matters.
- 26:34I think this is the week, though, that matters for
- 26:36perception more than anything else.
- 26:38I mean, lingering into the offseason, lingering into the
- 26:40bowls, if you lose to Nebraska, I think it's it's the
- 26:43difference. This, the outcome this week is
- 26:47what determines for Iowa the difference between a Goodyear
- 26:50and an average year. I mean, if you're, if you win,
- 26:54you go to Nebraska, you win your eight and four with four close
- 26:58losses to good teams, it's one that you'll feel like you're
- 27:02right there. But if you go seven and five and
- 27:05Nebraska is one of those losses, it doesn't have the same impact.
- 27:08It means that you were just five and five against power
- 27:12conference, the competition, and that really doesn't matter in
- 27:14the grand scheme of things. Was this Carson Shire's best
- 27:17game as a Hawkeye, do you think? Yeah, he's finally starting to
- 27:21his athletic ability, has finally figured out how to play
- 27:24with the position that he's in. He's missed a lot of, you know,
- 27:26tackles in the past. He's overrung, you know, and a
- 27:29lot of that's just experience. But he was all over the place
- 27:32and he played really well and we're finally starting to see
- 27:35why. The coaches were very high on
- 27:37him athletically for a long time.
- 27:39And he's fits the description quite well.
- 27:41So I, I think I can see him playing himself into maybe a
- 27:45draft selection the way he's playing and, and his upside is
- 27:48clearly, you know, moving up. And you know, there's, there's a
- 27:51couple of Iowa linebackers who are in the NFL right now as
- 27:55mainly special teams guys, Nick Neiman and Christian Welch just
- 27:58the same name too. And he's right up there athletic
- 28:01wise. And I think he's got a chance to
- 28:03to make a roster based on 4 special teams and potentially
- 28:06playing linebacker. We go into the final week,
- 28:09rapper week of regular season and you're hearing it a ton in
- 28:12the SEC Don't really want to get to that conference championship
- 28:15game. Is that's something that is
- 28:17going to become more and more the case if we continue with
- 28:20this 12 team structure that getting there, taking an L
- 28:24though it didn't hurt teams a year ago that maybe this is
- 28:27something that is going to go the way the Dodo Birds and
- 28:29conference championships and then eventually we will get to
- 28:32that 2020 fourteen playoff because championship games go
- 28:36away. How do you look at it going
- 28:37forward and hearing, especially down in the Seca lot of rhetoric
- 28:40and we don't actually want to play in that game.
- 28:42Yeah, the SEC is different when it comes to the championship
- 28:45game because it is so embedded into the structure and into the
- 28:49culture of that league. I mean, it was the first one to
- 28:53do it and it and it's done it so successfully.
- 28:55And whereas the Big 10, it's kind of hit and miss this year
- 28:58will be off the charts. But in other years it's just
- 29:00been, you know, I'm just kind of a man, you know, last year it
- 29:04wasn't packed. It was a great game and two good
- 29:06teams. But you know, I, I think
- 29:09eventually though, there, there has been discussion and there
- 29:13continues to be a lot of excitement among some athletic
- 29:16directors that why just stop at 16?
- 29:19Why not go to 24 like that one AA or the FCS playoffs?
- 29:23And because that's something you can really sell and, and, and
- 29:26continue and I have to fire a coach early.
- 29:28You can, you can still have a chance if you're LSU or, you
- 29:31know, even Penn State. So I think that's probably the
- 29:34path we'll get down to now. I, I think there's a way that
- 29:37that could kind of marry it all. And I don't know if.
- 29:40The the the. Leagues are apartment for it,
- 29:42but I always liked the Big 10's proposal in 2020, what they
- 29:46called Champions Week. I always, I always wondered if
- 29:49that last week of the regular season, instead of having it
- 29:52being kind of de facto rivalry week, you make it a match up
- 29:55week. And you know, the Big 10 wants
- 29:58to do the, the, the six teams, you know, play three games, you
- 30:02know, where you get the automatic bids.
- 30:05But if you can't get that, then maybe the next, next thing is
- 30:08let's let's match up the 18 teams across the board with
- 30:12teams of your comparable records.
- 30:15Like let's say Iowa plays Michigan this week instead of,
- 30:18you know, they played that Nebraska last week, things like
- 30:21that. I think that may be one way to
- 30:23solve it where you're not playing an extra game but you're
- 30:26still getting those high impact games.
- 30:28I'll get to a Saturday with you. I want to get to the game.
- 30:33Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan's found a way to win this football
- 30:36game. The last four times it's been
- 30:37played, Ohio State's been I think #2 or #3 and, and all of
- 30:41those games ranked going into it.
- 30:43Ohio State obviously number one this year.
- 30:46You can argue the schedule with the exception of the Texas game
- 30:48that they haven't really been tested.
- 30:51What do I, I get that it's a rivalry, but man, Doc and I'm,
- 30:54I'm sure we've said this before, I don't see how Michigan stays
- 30:57with Ohio State this week. How do you see this game?
- 31:01I think Ohio State blows them out not close.
- 31:05Michigan's a nice team. They're they're a lot like Iowa
- 31:09is and has been, you know, pretty good defense can run the
- 31:12ball. I I think Iowa is a little bit
- 31:14better. I think Iowa is a little more
- 31:15physical than they are up front on offense anyway.
- 31:19So I think that would be a good game.
- 31:20But but this one, I mean, the only reason why they they won
- 31:23last year is because Iowa, Ohio State had a bad offensive
- 31:26coordinator and and Chip Kelly, I mean, he could have and, and
- 31:30now he's a free agent and, and, and he's, you know, you know,
- 31:34that wasn't exactly the nicest guy to his players, let's put it
- 31:37that way. I don't see any tears, you know,
- 31:40from either Columbus or Las Vegas for him exiting.
- 31:43But he had a horrible game plan. I mean, run the ball in the up
- 31:48the middle against Michigan, who had the 2 best defense tackles
- 31:51in the country, not use they Michigan was without the best,
- 31:55one of the best corners in the country and you still didn't
- 31:58attack him with those receivers Mecca Buca and Jeremiah Smith
- 32:02and Carnell Tate. And, and so, you know, and then
- 32:05the pressure really got to him. I, I just don't think that's the
- 32:08case this year. They're going to Ann Arbor.
- 32:10I think they're going to be explosive.
- 32:12I think they're going to be accurate.
- 32:13And, and I, I would be really surprised if it's within 3
- 32:16touchdowns. I'm.
- 32:17With you. You have your bracket up, your
- 32:20projected bracket up at the athletic dock, and I've been
- 32:23joking about this for a month now.
- 32:25There's still a possibility for Duke to win the ACC.
- 32:28Now they need a big upset. They need Cal to knock off SMU,
- 32:30but it's out there in Berkeley and late night game.
- 32:33You just never know. That could come to fruition.
- 32:36If Duke does do that, gets there, then beats Virginia, The
- 32:39ACC championship game are we talking about, then the American
- 32:42Athletic Conference champion and James Madison in front of Duke
- 32:46and the ACC is completely shut out?
- 32:49Very much so it very much could happen and and I wouldn't
- 32:52completely rule out San Diego State either.
- 32:54They don't have one lot in the Mountain West, but I think James
- 32:58Madison, I mean, I think we all kind of think of them a little
- 33:00bit higher than we do South San Diego State.
- 33:03But of course, I you know, this is not written in stone that
- 33:06that it should be the power for that get that automatic.
- 33:09It's it's 5 best conferences. We've always assumed it is, but
- 33:13if if Duke somehow and then wins the the league title, I I don't
- 33:19think that it deserves at all to be in there.
- 33:22I mean, you know, people were kind of chiding Tony Petiti when
- 33:25he was talking about his proposal that Iowa would have
- 33:27been the sixth team in in the big 10 little mini tournament
- 33:32last year. And if Iowa would have won, it
- 33:34wouldn't have deserved it would have been eight and four.
- 33:36It wasn't that bad. But but Duke, I mean, getting
- 33:38beat what, 45 to 16 or 19 by Illinois earlier in the year?
- 33:43I just don't see them being in that case.
- 33:46And frankly, outside of Miami, that league doesn't really have
- 33:49a true playoff team. I mean, they've all lost
- 33:52decisively in the last few weeks.
- 33:55I I just, I think that, you know, I mean, what you really
- 33:58want and it probably not going to happen, is Miami just somehow
- 34:01squeeze its way. Yeah, because it is the best
- 34:04team. But even then, they've lost two
- 34:05games to SMU and Louisville. Louisville's lost four straight
- 34:09or whatever. So yeah, so I just don't.
- 34:12If Duke gets there, yeah, I think James Madison can
- 34:15certainly pass him up. Anyway, Notre Dame falls out of
- 34:18it and when them hanging 70 on Syracuse, was that meant to send
- 34:22a message? And if so Doc, at this point of
- 34:24the game, does it matter how many?
- 34:25Because they're not going to move up by beating Syracuse, But
- 34:28if they beat him by 63, does that help?
- 34:30And is Notre Dame in? I think Notre Dame is in with a
- 34:34win and they play what Stanford this yeah, yeah.
- 34:38And if they beat Stanford, you know, Stanford of course knocked
- 34:41off they won the other day against Cal And I I think that
- 34:47if Notre Dame can can win this game and they're most likely in
- 34:50and and that's and that's totally, you know, cool.
- 34:52They, they, they've been playing like this.
- 34:54And, and the big discussion is like the Miami Notre Dame one
- 34:58is, you know, should a teams, how, how much does the team's
- 35:02losses matter versus how much does the wins matter?
- 35:05And I think it's a fair discussion because should Miami
- 35:09always be ranked ahead of Notre Dame because it beat it?
- 35:12Well, you know, Notre Dame lost two games by combined 4 points
- 35:16to two really good teams, whereas as we said, you know,
- 35:18Miami's lost 2 bad ones. And I, I think Notre Dame is one
- 35:22of the 10 best teams in the country and deserves to be in
- 35:24the, in the rankings, but it's, it's scheduled.
- 35:27This does not quite add up to being higher than, say, maybe
- 35:32getting a home. Scott Dockerman from The
- 35:35Athletic. Doc, as always, thanks for what
- 35:37you do for us. Happy Thanksgiving to you and
- 35:39yours. Where are you going this week,
- 35:40Doc? You staying home to cover it
- 35:42all? You're going to be in Lincoln,
- 35:43You're going to be in Ann Arbor. What are you doing?
