- 0:05Speaker 1: You're listening.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Are you listening to Movie Meltdown?
- 0:08Speaker 1: I'm Amanda Burse. I hope.
- 0:15Speaker 3: So.
- 0:20Speaker 4: This episode is rated M for Misty. Yes, that's right,
- 0:23Speaker 4: this is a Misty episode, so it will be laced
- 0:25Speaker 4: with profanity even more than usual. If you're not comfortable
- 0:28Speaker 4: with this level of profanity... perhaps this isn't the episode
- 0:31Speaker 4: for you. But we have many other episodes to choose
- 0:33Speaker 4: from that do not feature Misty and will probably be
- 0:36Speaker 4: far less offensive. Okay, maybe. That having been said, on
- 0:41Speaker 4: with the show.
- 0:41Speaker 5: It's showtime, folks.
- 0:44Speaker 6: Enjoy the show.
- 0:57Speaker 7: Our nuclear reactor, pumping out one million kilowatts of power.
- 1:32Speaker 7: My special gift is impossible relationships.
- 1:45Speaker 2: What's up and welcome to Movie Meltdown.
- 1:46Speaker 4: I'm Brian.
- 1:47Speaker 1: I'm Misty.
- 1:48Speaker 8: And I'm Jay.
- 1:49Speaker 2: And we're coming to you live via digital recording from
- 1:51Speaker 2: the Lexington Comic and Toy Convention.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Hells yes we are.
- 1:55Speaker 2: And it's been quite a day. live from the stairwell
- 1:58Speaker 2: live from our actually we're kind of back in our
- 2:01Speaker 2: many many years ago we had our own little secret
- 2:03Speaker 2: place that we used to go and hide and record
- 2:05Speaker 2: have our own private bathrooms and the sound was was
- 2:08Speaker 2: not too bad and we actually back in the day
- 2:10Speaker 2: had a little couch that they tucked away down here
- 2:11Speaker 2: and nobody else knew about it and it was our
- 2:13Speaker 2: own little secret place now since then they've stole our
- 2:16Speaker 2: couch but the fact that we're sitting on the floor
- 2:17Speaker 2: is actually fitting as we go into later in this
- 2:20Speaker 2: episode but we'll get to that later so how's it
- 2:25Speaker 2: going it's going we've had quite a day.
- 2:30Speaker 1: It's exhausting. I'm done.
- 2:31Speaker 2: Many, many things.
- 2:33Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:33Speaker 2: I'm kind of exhausted just from the wandering and, I
- 2:36Speaker 2: guess we also are out of practice. We're back in
- 2:39Speaker 2: the convention season.
- 2:40Speaker 3: This is the.
- 2:41Speaker 2: First real full-on convention of the year.
- 2:44Speaker 4: I feel good.
- 2:44Speaker 2: That's what geeks do. They kind of wrap it up
- 2:46Speaker 2: and it's the holidays and nobody leaves the house and
- 2:48Speaker 2: it gets cold.
- 2:49Speaker 1: Boyfriend has been surprisingly chill all day considering the amount
- 2:53Speaker 1: of people. He hasn't killed anybody yet. He hasn't gone
- 2:56Speaker 1: and sat in the car, which is the normal MO
- 2:58Speaker 1: or hiding in a corner.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Are you on your special medication?
- 3:01Speaker 9: No.
- 3:02Speaker 2: You're just high on life.
- 3:04Speaker 1: High on meeting Chuck Norris.
- 3:05Speaker 2: Meeting Chuck Norris. That was specifically what brought you today.
- 3:10Speaker 2: So do you want to go into that awesomeness that
- 3:13Speaker 2: is Chuck Norris being a badass?
- 3:15Speaker 4: I don't know. Can I?
- 3:16Speaker 8: How do you?
- 3:18Speaker 1: How does one delve into the awesomeness that is Chuck Norris?
- 3:21Speaker 2: You met him. You shook his hand. He was a
- 3:23Speaker 2: cool dude.
- 3:24Speaker 8: He was very friendly.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Excellent. He probably.
- 3:27Speaker 8: Would have spent more time talking, but God, he had
- 3:29Speaker 8: so many people in his line.
- 3:32Speaker 2: He was a big draw this year.
- 3:34Speaker 8: You could kind of tell that he wanted to talk
- 3:36Speaker 8: a little bit, but the handlers are kind of rushing him.
- 3:40Speaker 1: Especially by the time we got to him in the line,
- 3:43Speaker 1: because it was getting close to photo op time.
- 3:46Speaker 8: Yeah, so you guys need to move it on.
- 3:48Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:49Speaker 2: Trying to wrap this up.
- 3:50Speaker 1: And it's not so much him, it's not so much
- 3:51Speaker 1: his handlers, or just the situation in general.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Just trying to orchestrate all this stuff, to me, is
- 3:56Speaker 2: a nightmare. So the fact that they ever get any
- 3:59Speaker 2: of this done, let alone just the amount of things
- 4:01Speaker 2: going on at once at any given moment in any
- 4:03Speaker 2: of these conventions.
- 4:04Speaker 1: This one could have gone either way, because it's Chuck Norris,
- 4:07Speaker 1: who's Chuck Norris, but it's also, when's the last thing
- 4:09Speaker 1: he's really done? Expeditals. Yeah, but still, it's.
- 4:13Speaker 2: Like, I still feel like he's just name recognition. And
- 4:17Speaker 2: so many kids grew up.
- 4:18Speaker 8: It's Chuck Norris.
- 4:19Speaker 2: Yeah, on the VHS era.
- 4:21Speaker 8: He was king. So you've got people that watch The Expendables.
- 4:25Speaker 8: You've got all the people that watch Walker, Texas Ranger.
- 4:29Speaker 8: You've got all the people that are martial arts and
- 4:33Speaker 8: fighting nerds like me. I mean, that's a long time.
- 4:37Speaker 8: That's a fan base going back to what?
- 4:41Speaker 10: Late 70s?
- 4:42Speaker 4: Late 70s.
- 4:44Speaker 8: There was a very diverse group of people in line waiting.
- 4:48Speaker 4: To meet him.
- 4:49Speaker 1: And I wonder how many of them there were just
- 4:51Speaker 1: like for the name because it has become so much more.
- 4:54Speaker 3: That too.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Yeah, he's kind of a meme at this point. Like
- 4:57Speaker 2: he's a running joke. Not in a way against him,
- 4:59Speaker 2: just in that he's such a badass. Like that is
- 5:02Speaker 2: the punchline of the joke.
- 5:03Speaker 8: But, I mean, that's a whole other group of people
- 5:07Speaker 8: too that just know Chuck Norris from, you know, 100
- 5:11Speaker 8: facts about Chuck Norris. You know, stuff like that.
- 5:14Speaker 1: So did it live up to your expectations? I know
- 5:16Speaker 1: you didn't get to like. Yeah.
- 5:17Speaker 4: Yeah, I did.
- 5:18Speaker 1: Because I was afraid you'd be disappointed.
- 5:21Speaker 9: No.
- 5:21Speaker 1: When I mention somebody at a convention, you're usually excited
- 5:23Speaker 1: for all of about five minutes.
- 5:24Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:25Speaker 1: You're like, oh my God, this is so exciting.
- 5:26Speaker 2: No, I'm not.
- 5:28Speaker 1: I'm not in. I'm not going to go. So for
- 5:30Speaker 1: you to stay, because we've known about this since what, November?
- 5:32Speaker 2: Yeah, it was definitely last year. I remember us talking
- 5:35Speaker 2: about it.
- 5:36Speaker 1: We bought the photo op and the personalized photo autograph.
- 5:41Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 5:41Speaker 8: Well, I want it personalized.
- 5:43Speaker 4: I don't want it.
- 5:44Speaker 2: You're not selling it on eBay. No, no.
- 5:46Speaker 1: The thing is, it's weird that they charge you more
- 5:48Speaker 1: for the personalization when you can't sell it. You figure
- 5:51Speaker 1: they would charge you more to not personalize it so
- 5:53Speaker 1: that you can't turn around and sell it. But I
- 5:54Speaker 1: did notice that a lot of the boards up there,
- 5:57Speaker 1: like everybody who had their photo op price or their
- 5:59Speaker 1: autograph price, it said at the very bottom what the
- 6:02Speaker 1: person can.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Reserves the right to personalize.
- 6:06Speaker 3: Whether you like it or not.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Essentially is how they.
- 6:09Speaker 8: But then they also sold the stickers that were the
- 6:11Speaker 8: certified authenticity.
- 6:13Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 6:14Speaker 2: You know, it makes it official.
- 6:16Speaker 3: I guess.
- 6:17Speaker 8: I bet I'm, you know, I'm not looking to sell
- 6:19Speaker 8: any of my stuff, which is why I always have personalized.
- 6:21Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:21Speaker 1: It's been an Epic day of, there's been so many
- 6:24Speaker 1: people here.
- 6:25Speaker 8: But you know, it's like, okay. They always say, never
- 6:28Speaker 8: meet your heroes. Um, And I agree with him on
- 6:33Speaker 8: certain things, but there are some people that I know
- 6:37Speaker 8: just from watching TV interviews and stuff like that. They're
- 6:40Speaker 8: fairly cool. Chuck Norris.
- 6:42Speaker 4: Cool guy.
- 6:42Speaker 2: See, I'm on the other way. I'm like, if you
- 6:45Speaker 2: base your whole life around these heroes that like. If
- 6:49Speaker 2: they fall, you have nothing left. That's just a bad
- 6:51Speaker 2: situation for you. Well, I've never done that. So to me,
- 6:53Speaker 2: it's like, don't build your heroes up into being something
- 6:56Speaker 2: more than they should be. They should be an inspiration
- 6:59Speaker 2: to you, but they shouldn't be like, God, it's true.
- 7:02Speaker 4: No, no, no.
- 7:03Speaker 8: I've never looked at any one person as like, you know,
- 7:09Speaker 8: he's my idol. I'm going to live my life exactly
- 7:12Speaker 8: like him. It's like, I take certain life lessons from
- 7:15Speaker 8: certain people, or I get inspiration from certain people through
- 7:18Speaker 8: certain things.
- 7:20Speaker 4: So, you know, I.
- 7:23Speaker 8: Can't think of anybody that I've been disappointed in.
- 7:25Speaker 2: See, that's what I was going to say. I was like,
- 7:27Speaker 2: I encourage you, like, go meet your heroes. Because to me,
- 7:29Speaker 2: I'm always like, if they are a jerk, I want
- 7:31Speaker 2: to know. Like, I don't want to keep basing my
- 7:33Speaker 2: life around them. Like, I want to. So, in the
- 7:36Speaker 2: course of the show over all these years, like, I've
- 7:38Speaker 2: met so many people that I grew up thinking were
- 7:40Speaker 2: the greatest thing in the world. And it's like, don't.
- 7:42Speaker 2: oversell it don't make them into something that they shouldn't
- 7:45Speaker 2: be so when I meet them and like I kind
- 7:47Speaker 2: of talk to them for a little while and I
- 7:49Speaker 2: get to know them as a human being I'm like
- 7:51Speaker 2: turns out they're a real person and they're still kind
- 7:54Speaker 2: of cool like to me.
- 7:55Speaker 1: I knew Shatner was going to be a dick.
- 7:57Speaker 5: See that's the thing don't build it up into a
- 8:00Speaker 5: whole big thing and then be disappointed when he's a
- 8:02Speaker 5: jerk like just think that he's a person and you
- 8:04Speaker 5: think that he's cool and you meet him and hopefully
- 8:07Speaker 5: you're right and he is not necessarily Shatner.
- 8:09Speaker 2: But I mean with most of these people it's like
- 8:10Speaker 2: I meet him and I'm just kind of like hey
- 8:12Speaker 2: that they actually turned out to be cool, and that
- 8:15Speaker 2: just reinforces why I wanted to be inspired by them. So, like,
- 8:18Speaker 2: to me, just don't build up your heroes into something
- 8:21Speaker 2: more than they need to be.
- 8:22Speaker 1: And I encourage people to meet them, too, just because
- 8:24Speaker 1: you never know when something's going to happen.
- 8:25Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 8:26Speaker 1: And what if you never get that chance, you know?
- 8:28Speaker 1: Because I've always had anxiety problems, and when I met
- 8:30Speaker 1: Corey Haim, I don't even care. I was like, he
- 8:32Speaker 1: probably thought I was just, I don't know, I couldn't even, like,
- 8:35Speaker 1: fucking words or not even a thing and he probably
- 8:39Speaker 1: he didn't understand how excited i was because at that
- 8:42Speaker 1: point in his career he was like that's cory he's
- 8:46Speaker 1: a joke yeah some people are literally the most excited
- 8:50Speaker 1: and i was like i feel so horrible that i
- 8:53Speaker 1: didn't like i couldn't like talk to him and be
- 8:56Speaker 1: like dude i've been a fan of your everything you've
- 8:59Speaker 1: done and it's like i've watched all the all these
- 9:01Speaker 1: movies and it's like And what I didn't like, I
- 9:04Speaker 1: never idolized him because, I mean, let's be serious, he
- 9:07Speaker 1: had some serious fucking life.
- 9:09Speaker 2: But again, as we're now understanding, he also grew up
- 9:13Speaker 2: in a horrible situation that I don't even know the
- 9:15Speaker 2: details of and I kind of don't want to know.
- 9:17Speaker 1: I don't think any of this will ever know the
- 9:18Speaker 1: details of.
- 9:18Speaker 2: What, you know. No, but we know there was a
- 9:20Speaker 2: lot of stuff going on. Again, was up until a
- 9:24Speaker 2: few months ago still going on in Hollywood. I'm not
- 9:26Speaker 2: saying it's totally on now, but. Definitely back in the 80s,
- 9:30Speaker 2: when you were a child actor, there was some horrible
- 9:33Speaker 2: stuff going on. So the fact that he came out
- 9:36Speaker 2: with some problems is not a shock. It's like you
- 9:39Speaker 2: don't throw kids in the middle of that and expect
- 9:42Speaker 2: them to not bring issues with them.
- 9:44Speaker 1: So yeah, it's... So yeah, I totally regret not being... Man,
- 9:48Speaker 1: I'm a really... I was just... It's not very often... Yeah,
- 9:51Speaker 1: I have anxiety problems, but I still... I can put.
- 9:55Speaker 2: You've gotten better, I have to say. Doing this with
- 9:57Speaker 2: you all these years, you've gotten to the point where
- 9:59Speaker 2: you can kind of joke with people and you're a
- 10:01Speaker 2: lot more normal than.
- 10:02Speaker 1: Yeah, but then I usually go home and panic and.
- 10:04Speaker 2: That's just crazy in your head. Don't be crazy in
- 10:06Speaker 2: your head.
- 10:07Speaker 1: That's not how it works. You can't just tell people
- 10:10Speaker 1: to turn the crazy off because that's... that's not how
- 10:12Speaker 1: anxiety works. And I understand that. And I know there's
- 10:16Speaker 1: people out there who experienced the exact same thing, but
- 10:19Speaker 1: that's my one regret is not being able to, you know,
- 10:21Speaker 1: and then like not even a year later, you know,
- 10:23Speaker 1: Corey was gone and I.
- 10:24Speaker 2: Was just like, shit, dude, I don't get to see
- 10:28Speaker 2: him again. Like that was my one chance. So yeah.
- 10:31Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 10:31Speaker 8: We didn't get a chance. You didn't get a chance
- 10:33Speaker 8: to tell him, Hey.
- 10:35Speaker 1: And in the, there's a picture of me and him.
- 10:36Speaker 1: He's just like, Oh God, you can tell look in
- 10:39Speaker 1: his eye where he just looks defeated.
- 10:40Speaker 8: He thinks it's a joke. He probably thought your excitement was.
- 10:44Speaker 2: Just a joke. Especially that weekend. I've heard people talk
- 10:47Speaker 2: about that weekend, and a lot of people were making
- 10:49Speaker 2: fun of him.
- 10:51Speaker 1: I honestly thought that weekend he looked fucking amazing. He
- 10:54Speaker 1: looked good. He looked better than he had in years.
- 10:57Speaker 1: He had lost weight. He looked good. He wasn't bloaty.
- 11:01Speaker 2: He went through a phase.
- 11:03Speaker 1: Where he was like, okay, how is he still alive?
- 11:06Speaker 1: He looked good.
- 11:07Speaker 2: He was trying to get back. They were doing their
- 11:09Speaker 2: weird show right before that. So I think he was
- 11:11Speaker 2: trying to get steps back into working in the industry
- 11:15Speaker 2: and getting more legit jobs.
- 11:18Speaker 1: You never know. So if you get a chance, just
- 11:21Speaker 1: don't get your hopes up too high.
- 11:24Speaker 2: Unless, of course, it's Doug Jones. But we'll get to
- 11:27Speaker 2: that in a minute. In the meantime, I don't know.
- 11:30Speaker 2: Did you want to discuss anything? Actually, I had one
- 11:32Speaker 2: that I've seen that I think you've seen. So if
- 11:35Speaker 2: you want to tie in.
- 11:36Speaker 1: Is it on my list?
- 11:37Speaker 2: Let me see. Yes, right there.
- 11:41Speaker 3: Can you read?
- 11:42Speaker 2: Happy Death Day.
- 11:43Speaker 1: Good God.
- 11:44Speaker 2: I watched that a few weeks back.
- 11:46Speaker 1: I watched it because as soon as I saw the
- 11:48Speaker 1: trailer for it, I'm like, oh my God, I'm going
- 11:50Speaker 1: to like this movie.
- 11:51Speaker 2: I'm a sucker for time loop movies. And I know
- 11:54Speaker 2: there's almost too many of them these days. It's nonstop now.
- 11:57Speaker 2: It's its own subgenre.
- 12:00Speaker 1: When I put the DVD in, the first movie was the.
- 12:05Speaker 2: The Lea Thompson Jr.
- 12:05Speaker 9: Movie.
- 12:06Speaker 1: Yeah, the Lea Thompson Jr.
- 12:07Speaker 3: Before you fall?
- 12:08Speaker 2: Is that?
- 12:09Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 12:09Speaker 2: Am I making that up? I don't know.
- 12:10Speaker 1: You could be. That was a message I messaged you
- 12:14Speaker 1: on Facebook as soon as I'm like, all right, we
- 12:16Speaker 1: just watched this movie. This is the very first, and
- 12:18Speaker 1: it's the exact same general premise.
- 12:19Speaker 2: Yeah, it's still a young girl stuck in a time
- 12:22Speaker 2: loop for one day. Yeah, it's the exact same general premise,
- 12:26Speaker 2: but one takes an entirely different direction than the other.
- 12:29Speaker 1: I'm going to be honest. This girl was, she was
- 12:32Speaker 1: not likable to begin with.
- 12:34Speaker 4: A lot of the movie.
- 12:35Speaker 2: I was midway in and I'm just like, okay, is she...
- 12:39Speaker 2: I mean, I guess... I can't say I'm taking this
- 12:43Speaker 2: out of the blue. In the movie, they end up
- 12:44Speaker 2: referencing Groundhog Day. So, okay, most of them are inspired
- 12:47Speaker 2: by Groundhog Day. That's the most mainstream version of this.
- 12:50Speaker 2: If anybody knows what a time loop movie is, it's
- 12:53Speaker 2: because they've seen Groundhog Day. So... to take it to
- 12:56Speaker 2: that one, I mean, I guess, yes, Bill Murray's kind
- 12:59Speaker 2: of a jerk in that, like, if he wasn't Bill Murray,
- 13:01Speaker 2: you'd be pretty annoyed with him, but the fact that
- 13:03Speaker 2: he is Bill Murray kind of, like, wins you over,
- 13:07Speaker 2: so this one, I guess, I don't, again, I think
- 13:10Speaker 2: that's going to be a battle with any character that's
- 13:12Speaker 2: sort of unlikable, if you're not Bill Murray, so going
- 13:15Speaker 2: into this, like, even halfway into this movie, I'm like,
- 13:18Speaker 2: this girl is still kind of a jerk, like, Are
- 13:21Speaker 2: we going to get to that turning point? Are we
- 13:23Speaker 2: going to get to see her sort of learn something
- 13:25Speaker 2: in her life? Because there's a lot of times through
- 13:28Speaker 2: the cycle that she is not really learning anything.
- 13:32Speaker 1: One of my main problems with this movie, and it's
- 13:33Speaker 1: probably going to be a spoiler alert.
- 13:35Speaker 2: Okay, spoiler alert for Happy Death Day.
- 13:38Speaker 1: When she's in the hospital, after how many deaths?
- 13:40Speaker 2: A lot, a lot.
- 13:42Speaker 1: The doctor's like, yeah, I don't know how you're alive
- 13:43Speaker 1: at this point. How does she fucking survive the movie
- 13:46Speaker 1: in general? Because if the doctor's like, how are you
- 13:48Speaker 1: still alive with all these injuries? She went through more.
- 13:51Speaker 1: I'm sorry, but even if she did fix it at
- 13:54Speaker 1: the end, she still wakes up. She still have the injuries.
- 13:56Speaker 1: You understand what I'm saying?
- 13:58Speaker 2: I mean, she learned her lesson. She fixed her life.
- 14:01Speaker 2: And then like after the credits roll, like the next
- 14:04Speaker 2: day with that dude, she has like a heart attack
- 14:06Speaker 2: because she'd taken so much impact over the year, years
- 14:10Speaker 2: or however long this thing went on. We don't really
- 14:13Speaker 2: know the timeframe, but I.
- 14:16Speaker 3: Don't know.
- 14:17Speaker 2: It, Again, I think this is one of those I'll
- 14:19Speaker 2: try to back off and far be it for me
- 14:21Speaker 2: to not overthink a movie. But I think after a while,
- 14:24Speaker 2: I was just like, all right, let's just go with it. Like,
- 14:26Speaker 2: I see what a crazy, silly premise they're going with here.
- 14:30Speaker 2: And it's there for fun.
- 14:31Speaker 1: I always thought it was strange that they were actually
- 14:33Speaker 1: letting her... When she was in the hospital, they were
- 14:35Speaker 1: acknowledging the injuries that she had and the life that she.
- 14:39Speaker 2: It is weird that they brought it up. Like, to me,
- 14:40Speaker 2: if you're going to keep a movie that fun, they
- 14:43Speaker 2: just wouldn't even... Like, it would have no rules. There
- 14:45Speaker 2: would be no consequences.
- 14:46Speaker 8: Yeah, there wouldn't be that... Well, you got a broken
- 14:49Speaker 8: rib and you got burned here and you got a
- 14:51Speaker 8: scar from this.
- 14:51Speaker 9: Mm-hmm.
- 14:52Speaker 1: They actually acknowledge it, but then there's no actual repercussions
- 14:55Speaker 1: for it. Because I figured, like I said, she went
- 14:56Speaker 1: through several deaths after that scene.
- 14:59Speaker 8: Well, didn't they kind of make it sound like that
- 15:02Speaker 8: she could only keep going for so long before she
- 15:06Speaker 8: would just eventually succumb to her wounds?
- 15:08Speaker 2: I guess that's the hope, is you only have a
- 15:11Speaker 2: few left. So within those few, she figures out what
- 15:14Speaker 2: she needs to figure out and hopefully... It's the cat
- 15:17Speaker 2: with nine lives. She's on eight. As long as you're
- 15:19Speaker 2: good from that point on, you don't die. You live
- 15:21Speaker 2: the rest of your life. You're okay. So I'm going
- 15:24Speaker 2: to assume that's how it goes.
- 15:27Speaker 1: Hole in the plot to me because if they're going
- 15:28Speaker 1: to acknowledge the injuries, whatever, she should still have those
- 15:31Speaker 1: injuries at the very end. I agree.
- 15:33Speaker 2: But there's a lot of fun deaths along the way.
- 15:35Speaker 1: But in the end, I do actually like that girl.
- 15:38Speaker 4: She's in the end.
- 15:39Speaker 1: In the end.
- 15:40Speaker 2: And again, because you see her actually learn something in general.
- 15:45Speaker 2: But in particular, watching how she realizes, like, I've been
- 15:48Speaker 2: a horrible person. And then you do get a few
- 15:51Speaker 2: little moments of, like, oh, this is why. Like, it's
- 15:53Speaker 2: not just that she started out as a horrible person. Like,
- 15:56Speaker 2: she became this horrible person due to this thing going
- 15:59Speaker 2: on in her life. So, like, it does expand a
- 16:02Speaker 2: little bit. Again, I didn't expect a lot of deep
- 16:04Speaker 2: writing in this silly plot. But I enjoyed it. Yeah,
- 16:08Speaker 2: I think they do flesh out a little bit of
- 16:10Speaker 2: her character that gives it reason who she is and
- 16:13Speaker 2: why she does what she does. And then you watch
- 16:15Speaker 2: her kind of grow and learn and become not such
- 16:18Speaker 2: a jerk.
- 16:18Speaker 1: And the other are some interesting and fun deaths.
- 16:20Speaker 2: A lot of fun deaths. Yeah.
- 16:22Speaker 1: And the fact that she learns her lesson enough. Spoiler alert.
- 16:25Speaker 2: Spoiler.
- 16:26Speaker 1: Major spoiler. If you're going to watch it, go watch
- 16:28Speaker 1: it now. Spoiler. At the end, her at the beginning
- 16:33Speaker 1: of the movie would not have done when she realizes that,
- 16:36Speaker 1: all right, if I don't die this time, this guy
- 16:39Speaker 1: who I now care about is He's dead for good.
- 16:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:43Speaker 1: So she sacrifices her life so she can start that
- 16:45Speaker 1: day all over again just so she can save him.
- 16:48Speaker 1: Which to me shows a lot of growth in her
- 16:50Speaker 1: character because to her from the very beginning of that movie,
- 16:52Speaker 1: I'm like.
- 16:53Speaker 2: Peace out, bitch.
- 16:54Speaker 3: I'm done.
- 16:56Speaker 1: So to me, she is a person at that point
- 16:59Speaker 1: that you're like, you know, she has learned something. She
- 17:01Speaker 1: really is okay. She not really sacrifices herself because she
- 17:06Speaker 1: gets to start all over again. But at that point,
- 17:08Speaker 1: she doesn't know how many times she gets to start
- 17:10Speaker 1: all over again.
- 17:11Speaker 2: I mean, to me, if you were having issues with
- 17:13Speaker 2: the injuries sustained, to me, the ones that were like... Wait, wait,
- 17:17Speaker 2: I'm calling bullshit on this. Like, the amount of things
- 17:20Speaker 2: that our killer, our weird babyface killer, was, like, orchestrating. Like,
- 17:25Speaker 2: you get to the one with, like, the music box
- 17:27Speaker 2: in the tunnel, and I'm like, there's so much stuff
- 17:29Speaker 2: that I'm just like, how did this person, even knowing,
- 17:33Speaker 2: and later knowing who it is, I'm like, how did
- 17:34Speaker 2: that person in particular... put all these elaborate plans together
- 17:39Speaker 2: for her to accidentally end up in this spot at
- 17:42Speaker 2: this moment, and then that still doesn't go right, but
- 17:44Speaker 2: somehow this person ends up getting over here to kill her. Yeah,
- 17:48Speaker 2: it's like if you want to overthink those scenes, you're
- 17:50Speaker 2: going to be annoyed. So just kind of go with
- 17:51Speaker 2: the death.
- 17:52Speaker 1: Just enjoy it for what it is.
- 17:53Speaker 2: Enjoy the death.
- 17:54Speaker 1: It's a fun slasher film. It's really good. It's a
- 17:58Speaker 1: lot of fun. Slasher fun, Groundhog Day. If that's what
- 18:01Speaker 1: you want in your life, which is something that I
- 18:02Speaker 1: generally look for in my life, I fully enjoyed it.
- 18:06Speaker 2: I just like time loop movies in general because I
- 18:09Speaker 2: like watching to see what they can do that's different.
- 18:12Speaker 2: I mean, there have been a handful of them, and
- 18:14Speaker 2: there's more lately. It's become a thing. The show I
- 18:18Speaker 2: just watched the other day did the exact same thing.
- 18:20Speaker 2: The Legends of Tomorrow or whatever the hell that show
- 18:23Speaker 2: is did the exact same thing. And even in the
- 18:26Speaker 2: episode of the show, they reference Groundhog Day. That's the
- 18:28Speaker 2: only way they could get the point across to the
- 18:30Speaker 2: characters in the show and the people sitting at home watching.
- 18:33Speaker 2: Like it is just sort of a shorthand now of like, oh,
- 18:36Speaker 2: it's like a Groundhog's Day kind of a plot.
- 18:37Speaker 3: So I.
- 18:39Speaker 2: Kind of like that just seeing how each one finds
- 18:42Speaker 2: a new spin to put on it and find a
- 18:44Speaker 2: different way to do it. So this is definitely a
- 18:46Speaker 2: different thing. You didn't expect him to do like, you know, granted, again,
- 18:50Speaker 2: in Groundhog's Day, we do see him die a lot.
- 18:52Speaker 2: But this one like that is kind of the joke
- 18:55Speaker 2: of it is like by the end, like you have
- 18:57Speaker 2: to go ahead and kill yourself just to start.
- 18:59Speaker 1: Over and Just to be able to save this person. Yeah.
- 19:02Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 19:03Speaker 2: Or just to figure out the next, like unraveling this mystery.
- 19:06Speaker 2: And the only way to do it is to constantly
- 19:07Speaker 2: get killed at the end of each one of them.
- 19:10Speaker 2: And like, Oh, I did that wrong. Let's try again tomorrow.
- 19:12Speaker 2: So it's, it was kind of, it's what I liked on, um,
- 19:15Speaker 2: what is the live, die, repeat one that, that again,
- 19:17Speaker 2: that wasn't actually a really, it was the Tom Cruise. Yeah.
- 19:21Speaker 2: The Tom Cruise one. That's a, whether you like Tom
- 19:23Speaker 2: Cruise or not, that's an awesome sci-fi movie. And is
- 19:27Speaker 2: a really interesting version of that same idea of like,
- 19:30Speaker 2: learning from your mistakes, going to the next day with
- 19:33Speaker 2: this new information, trying to figure out how to make
- 19:36Speaker 2: this plan work by dying every time. So, yeah, that
- 19:40Speaker 2: one is an impressive version of it. This one's just
- 19:42Speaker 2: kind of a fun version.
- 19:43Speaker 1: It's fun. It's good. clean fun, but there's a lot
- 19:46Speaker 1: of deaths.
- 19:46Speaker 2: Good dirty fun. Messy fun. Good bloody fun.
- 19:50Speaker 1: I like when she actually just gives up too. When
- 19:51Speaker 1: she's just like walking around naked and she's just like, yeah,
- 19:54Speaker 1: I'm gonna do all the things that I never did
- 19:55Speaker 1: before because I don't care.
- 19:57Speaker 2: That's usually what you get to. We get that nice
- 19:59Speaker 2: little run in the middle of Groundhog's Day too. And
- 20:01Speaker 2: he's just like, whatever. Gonna go end up in jail
- 20:04Speaker 2: before the night's out.
- 20:05Speaker 3: Let a.
- 20:08Speaker 2: Groundhog drive the truck.
- 20:10Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
- 20:10Speaker 1: Good times. Who wouldn't do that? Should we roll on
- 20:14Speaker 1: to the next movie? Keep it rolling fast.
- 20:15Speaker 2: Okay.
- 20:15Speaker 1: Because we're going to roll into one. We should probably
- 20:18Speaker 1: roll it together into two. Two, but one, because it's
- 20:22Speaker 1: the same thing from different decades, maybe?
- 20:26Speaker 2: We watched It. Both of them.
- 20:30Speaker 8: Both of them at one time.
- 20:31Speaker 2: Simultaneously. Simultaneously. We got two TVs.
- 20:34Speaker 1: First we watched the remake. We watched the new version first.
- 20:38Speaker 1: And then the next week we watched the original. I
- 20:44Speaker 1: am sorry. I know everybody loved the new Pennywise, and
- 20:46Speaker 1: I adore Bill Skarsgård, but just no.
- 20:49Speaker 2: No!
- 20:50Speaker 1: That weird thing he does with his... Joyce! Joyce! Shut the... Dude, stop!
- 20:54Speaker 1: You are not... Tim Curry, knock it off. I mean,
- 20:59Speaker 1: I like the characters so much better in the original movie.
- 21:03Speaker 2: Hmm.
- 21:04Speaker 1: I love Seth Green in that movie. I mean, he
- 21:06Speaker 1: is that character. I mean, I read the fucking book.
- 21:09Speaker 1: The longest goddamn book. And you loved it. But, I mean,
- 21:12Speaker 1: there's so much character build in the book.
- 21:15Speaker 3: Whether you want it.
- 21:16Speaker 2: The book's 10 billion years long.
- 21:17Speaker 1: Whether you want that goddamn character build or not, you're
- 21:20Speaker 1: going to get it. So, to me, the characters, he
- 21:23Speaker 1: was perfect. You know, the Jonathan Brandeis. Brandeis, Brandis, how
- 21:28Speaker 1: do you say it?
- 21:28Speaker 2: Brandis is how I think I've said it. I think
- 21:31Speaker 2: I've heard both ways, so who knows. It's been so
- 21:33Speaker 2: long since I've seen it, I don't even remember half
- 21:36Speaker 2: of it, especially the kids. I don't remember that cast
- 21:38Speaker 2: at all. I do remember most of the adults, but
- 21:40Speaker 2: just because they were already recognizable.
- 21:42Speaker 1: That was a game for me, because I'm like, holy crap,
- 21:44Speaker 1: I didn't know John Ritter was in this.
- 21:46Speaker 2: Holy crap, I didn't know. I remember Anetto Tool or
- 21:50Speaker 2: John Boy.
- 21:50Speaker 1: I was just like, no, it's Super Boy's mom from Smallville.
- 21:59Speaker 2: I remember most of the adults.
- 22:00Speaker 8: What's his name from Night Court?
- 22:03Speaker 2: Richard Maul? Yeah. Or no, Harry Anderson.
- 22:06Speaker 3: Yeah, Harry Anderson.
- 22:09Speaker 1: That was so big part to me. It was like, I.
- 22:13Speaker 8: Know you people.
- 22:14Speaker 2: Most of them were already established even when they went
- 22:17Speaker 2: into that.
- 22:17Speaker 1: But I had never actually seen this movie in its entirety,
- 22:20Speaker 1: so I didn't remember them being in there. I like
- 22:24Speaker 1: the casting better. I like the characters. They're obviously not
- 22:29Speaker 1: going to get the same amount of character development, which Dude,
- 22:32Speaker 1: if it took me as long to watch this movie,
- 22:34Speaker 1: it took me as long to read the book, I
- 22:36Speaker 1: would have just, no. I mean, the remake looked good,
- 22:42Speaker 1: but I didn't like the characters as well. I mean,
- 22:44Speaker 1: I like Bev.
- 22:45Speaker 2: That's what I was going to say. She's the standout,
- 22:47Speaker 2: and maybe not even character-wise, but that little girl is
- 22:51Speaker 2: going to be huge.
- 22:52Speaker 3: She's so good at that.
- 22:53Speaker 1: I mean, you know who Bev in the original movie was, right?
- 22:56Speaker 1: You probably might not know.
- 22:57Speaker 2: Again, it's been a long time.
- 22:59Speaker 1: She was in Ginger Snaps. Emily, Emily Perkins.
- 23:02Speaker 2: Okay.
- 23:02Speaker 9: Yeah. Yeah.
- 23:03Speaker 1: You know, she was in ginger snap. She was in,
- 23:05Speaker 1: she's been in so many other things. She was in
- 23:07Speaker 1: an episode. She's in several episodes of supernatural love, supernatural,
- 23:11Speaker 1: but it's just my main problem with that first movie.
- 23:14Speaker 1: My only complaint that they not have gingers chicks. Cause
- 23:18Speaker 1: I mean, that's a big point in the book is
- 23:20Speaker 1: that Beverly is redheaded. And it's like, At least they
- 23:23Speaker 1: got that right in the remake.
- 23:25Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know why they did that.
- 23:26Speaker 1: Unless they just kidnapped two gingers. You can't have Seth
- 23:28Speaker 1: Green and some other chick because that's.
- 23:29Speaker 2: Just way too much ginger for one movie. Well, and
- 23:30Speaker 2: then she's redhead when she grows up. Like, Annette O'Toole
- 23:33Speaker 2: was a redhead. So, like, why would she grow up?
- 23:35Speaker 1: She wasn't overly redheaded. I guess maybe she.
- 23:37Speaker 2: Died a little more at that point. But, like, naturally,
- 23:39Speaker 2: she's a redhead.
- 23:40Speaker 1: She wasn't very red. It was kind of a dirty
- 23:43Speaker 1: blonde brown in the movie, right?
- 23:45Speaker 2: Yeah, that's weird.
- 23:47Speaker 1: But, I mean, I still, I do want to see
- 23:50Speaker 1: the newest, the continuation, because, you know, as everybody who's
- 23:53Speaker 1: seen it knows, the new one only covers the childhood.
- 23:56Speaker 2: It is going to be interesting to see how they
- 23:57Speaker 2: deal with that. Like, how it's going to work, both, like,
- 24:02Speaker 2: comparing it to the fact that they kind of did,
- 24:05Speaker 2: they already covered both of them in that other version. And,
- 24:07Speaker 2: like you said, when you read the book, like, it
- 24:09Speaker 2: jumps back and forth. So, the fact that they kept
- 24:11Speaker 2: it very separate in this new version.
- 24:13Speaker 1: Because the first one is more accurate to the book.
- 24:17Speaker 1: Because it does... You skip back. Now you're in current times.
- 24:20Speaker 1: Now you're in this time. Now you're here.
- 24:22Speaker 2: I do kind of like focusing on it. I think
- 24:24Speaker 2: it does... Because the characters themselves are forgetting that this
- 24:28Speaker 2: happened and going back and revisiting it. So it is
- 24:30Speaker 2: kind of interesting that they're going to go back and
- 24:32Speaker 2: revisit that as a separate movie too. But I don't know.
- 24:36Speaker 2: So I think... I liked the newer one pretty well.
- 24:41Speaker 5: The new It.
- 24:41Speaker 6: But.
- 24:42Speaker 2: How did you feel about the new Pennywise? Again, he's very...
- 24:47Speaker 2: I said that for years. I was like, how do
- 24:49Speaker 2: you come with that role knowing how Tim Curry did it?
- 24:52Speaker 2: How can you do something that's even going to hold up?
- 24:54Speaker 2: And I think he does. He's making very distinct choices
- 24:58Speaker 2: and he's... I think it works in his own weird way.
- 25:01Speaker 1: To me, I have to separate it. A lot of
- 25:03Speaker 1: that face is his, right?
- 25:04Speaker 3: Yeah, I know.
- 25:05Speaker 1: The weird eye-drifty thing? Yeah. It's him.
- 25:09Speaker 2: And that's the thing i like i give him credit
- 25:12Speaker 2: i can't even do it it's awful it's it's he
- 25:14Speaker 2: i think he does do something interesting with that role
- 25:17Speaker 2: and that was the biggest hurdle that i thought going
- 25:20Speaker 2: into this project so yeah i don't know i think
- 25:23Speaker 2: i liked it okay but i also haven't watched the
- 25:26Speaker 2: old one since i was a kid more or less
- 25:28Speaker 2: and i haven't been in a big rush to revisit
- 25:32Speaker 2: it i don't know so maybe i'll Maybe I'll go
- 25:34Speaker 2: back and rewatch that one, but I was okay with
- 25:37Speaker 2: what they did. If anything, I felt like, and I
- 25:40Speaker 2: feel like they must have gotten made at the same time, really,
- 25:42Speaker 2: but I feel like it was pulling so much from
- 25:44Speaker 2: the Stranger Things vibe that the whole world loved that,
- 25:49Speaker 2: so I feel like it.
- 25:50Speaker 1: I mean, it still had one of the same cast members.
- 25:52Speaker 2: I know, that's what I'm saying. I feel like it
- 25:54Speaker 2: knew that when they were making it, and they were
- 25:56Speaker 2: trying to tap into that, because I feel like it
- 25:58Speaker 2: really has that going for it. And maybe not by accident.
- 26:01Speaker 3: So, I don't know.
- 26:02Speaker 1: I didn't like that there's only one major difference that
- 26:05Speaker 1: I've noticed in the first one and the second one.
- 26:07Speaker 1: And that's that in the first movie, Georgie's dead.
- 26:11Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 26:12Speaker 1: There is no ifs, ands, or buts. He's not missing.
- 26:15Speaker 1: Whereas in the new one, it's kind of like.
- 26:17Speaker 2: There's a lot of missing children in this movie.
- 26:19Speaker 1: Whereas in the first one, he's fucking dead, you know?
- 26:23Speaker 2: But again, maybe that's just adding... Because later we keep like.
- 26:26Speaker 3: He keeps.
- 26:27Speaker 2: toying with him and like showing him georgie and like
- 26:30Speaker 2: that's like like maybe he's trying to trick him into
- 26:32Speaker 2: okay he is still here come down here with me
- 26:34Speaker 2: and like that works better as a trap i guess
- 26:37Speaker 2: if we're still in the gray area as to is
- 26:40Speaker 2: did he just kidnap him and he's keeping them there
- 26:43Speaker 2: just to be able to lure his brother in but
- 26:45Speaker 2: yeah i don't know that's the only way i took
- 26:47Speaker 2: it is that it was reason for him to try
- 26:49Speaker 2: to keep going back in there when he thought he
- 26:51Speaker 2: could save his brother so i don't know but giant,
- 26:56Speaker 2: creepy monster people that might come up later as we
- 27:01Speaker 2: get into this.
- 27:01Speaker 1: Spiders?
- 27:02Speaker 2: No, but do you want to talk about spiders?
- 27:05Speaker 1: Because that's what everybody fucking talks... Everybody talks shit about
- 27:07Speaker 1: the end of the original It because of the spider.
- 27:11Speaker 1: It's in the book! Calm down, people! It's in the book!
- 27:15Speaker 1: It's not like they just pulled the spider out of
- 27:16Speaker 1: their asses. The spider is.
- 27:18Speaker 2: In the book!
- 27:19Speaker 4: Well, I think, too.
- 27:20Speaker 8: You've got to approach it at kind of looking at
- 27:22Speaker 8: it from that Lovecraftian view. of it being one of
- 27:26Speaker 8: the older gods. It's something that I never really looked at.
- 27:29Speaker 8: When I first saw the movie when I was a kid, well,
- 27:31Speaker 8: I don't know if I was a kid, maybe I
- 27:32Speaker 8: was a teenager, when I saw the movie and at
- 27:34Speaker 8: the end it's a spider, I thought, oh, that's so stupid,
- 27:37Speaker 8: that's dumb. It would have been scarier if it was
- 27:40Speaker 8: a weird ghosty guy. But then the more I started reading,
- 27:44Speaker 8: like when I was getting into Lovecraft and getting into Cthulhu,
- 27:47Speaker 8: and then I go back and look at this and
- 27:49Speaker 8: then kind of revisit it, it makes more sense to me.
- 27:52Speaker 8: Why he would be a spider or some kind of
- 27:58Speaker 8: ancient alien.
- 27:58Speaker 3: At least the turtle isn't in it.
- 28:01Speaker 4: Yeah, turtles.
- 28:03Speaker 8: And why he would drive these people insane. So I
- 28:07Speaker 8: don't know if he taps into any of that. Maybe
- 28:09Speaker 8: he drew from Lovecraft or not. Maybe he did, maybe
- 28:12Speaker 8: he didn't. But I can see the parallels, so that's
- 28:16Speaker 8: where I'm going with it.
- 28:18Speaker 1: The glory and wonder of Doug Jones and all his
- 28:21Speaker 1: monster wonderfulness.
- 28:23Speaker 2: While we're discussing people dressing up as creepy monster guys,
- 28:28Speaker 2: we might mention that Pennywise character in a little bit.
- 28:31Speaker 2: Because now, yeah, we're not going to go down that road.
- 28:34Speaker 2: We're going to talk to the king of all monster men,
- 28:37Speaker 2: the guy that you want when you are casting your
- 28:40Speaker 2: movie and you want a giant dude in latex, you
- 28:43Speaker 2: want Doug Jones. Because not only is he an awesome monster,
- 28:46Speaker 2: but obviously, as you'll see, he's cool.
- 28:49Speaker 3: To hang out with.
- 28:49Speaker 8: He is one of the nicest people I've ever met
- 28:52Speaker 8: in my life.
- 28:54Speaker 2: And genuinely nice.
- 28:55Speaker 8: Not like most people I meet that are nice are
- 28:58Speaker 8: generally like, What can I get from you, Nice? He
- 29:02Speaker 8: is not like that. He is probably one of the
- 29:04Speaker 8: most genuine people I've met.
- 29:06Speaker 2: And as he's going to mention, he deals with that
- 29:08Speaker 2: version of that himself. So yeah, it's interesting that this
- 29:12Speaker 2: ride that he's been on and the fact that he
- 29:14Speaker 2: is still this genuine and this nice and this kind
- 29:18Speaker 2: of cool to hang out with. So I think we
- 29:20Speaker 2: should go hang out with him right now for this
- 29:22Speaker 2: week's movie.
- 29:28Speaker 12: Thank you.
- 29:37Speaker 13: Thank you.
- 29:44Speaker 10: Hurry, hurry, step right this way, folks, for the most

- 30:12Speaker 2: It's coming! What is this? Where did it come from?
- 30:16Speaker 4: See Columbia Pictures.

- 30:42Speaker 2: I do. Where would I get some?
- 30:45Speaker 3: Perhaps from our house that has Heine Brothers.
- 30:47Speaker 2: You probably got it like in a bag.
- 30:49Speaker 4: I did.

- 31:46Speaker 9: And our coffee has something extra, the care with which
- 31:49Speaker 9: we brew and serve it.
- 32:00Speaker 2: Hey, this is Danielle Harris. So I am now maybe,
- 32:04Speaker 2: quite possibly, one of the newest members of Movie Meltdown.
- 32:08Speaker 2: If I can ever actually get to the movies.
- 32:11Speaker 6: But I'll review some old 80s rom-coms for you.
- 32:16Speaker 2: See ya. It had to be you. It had to
- 32:22Speaker 2: be you.
- 32:25Speaker 7: I wandered around.
- 32:27Speaker 1: And finally found the somebody who... That's part of your problem,
- 32:33Speaker 1: you know.
- 32:33Speaker 8: You haven't seen enough movies.
- 32:35Speaker 10: All of life's riddles are answered in the movies.
- 32:37Speaker 3: And now, on with the show.
- 32:44Speaker 13: I didn't actually watch the movies.
- 33:06Speaker 2: There's a reason.
- 33:09Speaker 4: We'll get to that.
- 33:10Speaker 2: Like something dramatic?
- 33:14Speaker 5: That's why I love talking about my chick flicks with
- 33:19Speaker 5: your show.
- 33:19Speaker 3: You probably talk about gory things and sci-fi things.
- 33:24Speaker 2: Quite often. I guess we should do the rundown now
- 33:28Speaker 2: that we're here to talk about the movies.
- 33:29Speaker 3: Are we running?
- 33:30Speaker 2: We are up and running. And this is Doug.
- 33:33Speaker 3: Hey, I'm Doug Jones. Hi.
- 33:35Speaker 2: Joining us also is... Hi, Lucy. Misty and Jay are here,
- 33:42Speaker 2: but they were frightened off by this week's movie, so
- 33:45Speaker 2: we won't get too far into it.
- 33:48Speaker 8: Out of the both of us, I had volunteered to
- 33:51Speaker 8: watch the movie.
- 33:52Speaker 4: She said no.
- 33:52Speaker 1: Hey, you know what? I watched the trailer, so I
- 33:54Speaker 1: think I.
- 33:55Speaker 2: And that was enough to scare you. Before we get going,
- 33:59Speaker 2: while you're here, Jay, do you want to ask about
- 34:01Speaker 2: your really pressing, most favorite character of Doug's?
- 34:07Speaker 8: The Mac Tonight Moon Man.
- 34:09Speaker 3: That's your favorite character of mine?
- 34:10Speaker 2: My favorite character. I might be exaggerating a little.
- 34:14Speaker 8: I didn't know this, okay? And then you'd done an interview,
- 34:18Speaker 8: and it showed up on my Facebook, and you were
- 34:22Speaker 8: talking about being the, I guess, was that your first gig?
- 34:27Speaker 3: One of my first, yeah. Your fourth TV commercial booking
- 34:29Speaker 3: back in 1986.
- 34:30Speaker 8: That commercial stands out in my mind. I don't know why,
- 34:35Speaker 8: but as a kid, I was like, That's the coolest
- 34:38Speaker 8: thing I've ever seen.
- 34:39Speaker 2: It's a guy with a huge moon head.
- 34:40Speaker 3: Right. For those who don't know listening, it was a
- 34:45Speaker 3: long time ago. So you might have some young folks
- 34:47Speaker 3: who have no idea who Mac Tonight is. A crescent
- 34:49Speaker 3: moon head with a face on it.
- 34:50Speaker 2: I think it is on YouTube, though.
- 34:51Speaker 3: It's on the YouTube. M-A-C Tonight. T-O-N-I-G-H-T.
- 34:57Speaker 2: Mac Tonight.
- 34:57Speaker 3: If you Google that or YouTube that, you'll find the
- 35:00Speaker 3: commercials online. And it was a very popular campaign, 27
- 35:04Speaker 3: commercials I did in three years, and bought my first
- 35:07Speaker 3: house with that. So I owe McDonald's a condo.
- 35:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 35:12Speaker 8: But somebody had told me, or actually watching the video,
- 35:15Speaker 8: I was like, told her, I was like, holy crap.
- 35:18Speaker 2: He's the moon man. Oh, my God. I think you
- 35:21Speaker 2: just got confused that you thought it was moon night. No, no, no, no. No,
- 35:25Speaker 2: not moon night. Not moon night. Soon you will be
- 35:28Speaker 2: starring in the Moon Knight movie, once.
- 35:30Speaker 3: Marvel gets a hold of you. Is Moon Knight a
- 35:32Speaker 3: Marvel character?
- 35:32Speaker 2: He's a Marvel character that's kind of forgotten.
- 35:34Speaker 3: And having played a Marvel character, I should know this,
- 35:36Speaker 3: but I don't.
- 35:37Speaker 2: There you go, see? You've already got the inside.
- 35:38Speaker 3: Track on this one.
- 35:39Speaker 2: Okay, all right. All right, well, if we've covered that, let's...
- 35:43Speaker 2: I think.
- 35:44Speaker 3: We've covered that.
- 35:45Speaker 2: If you have other important.
- 35:47Speaker 3: Mac Tonight stuff... That's enough for.
- 35:48Speaker 2: A TV commercial from 1986.
- 35:48Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 35:49Speaker 8: Did you get any free food off that, I was wondering?
- 35:52Speaker 3: Oh, no, they paid me. And if I wanted to
- 35:53Speaker 3: buy burgers, that's up to me. Sometimes... I did not
- 35:57Speaker 3: get a lifetime card of any sort. That'd be great.
- 35:59Speaker 2: Rip off.
- 36:00Speaker 3: Because I do love me some drive-thru dollar menu. I'm
- 36:03Speaker 3: not going to lie. I'm not going to lie about it.
- 36:09Speaker 2: This episode is brought to you.
- 36:10Speaker 4: Could be.
- 36:10Speaker 3: Right?
- 36:11Speaker 2: I'm waiting for my, I want a condo out of
- 36:13Speaker 2: this deal too. So McDonald's, get a hold of me
- 36:15Speaker 2: is what I'm saying.
- 36:17Speaker 4: It's time for Sofa Theater.
- 36:22Speaker 12: A very ordinary boy bumps into a girl.
- 36:25Speaker 9: Oh my.
- 36:27Speaker 12: And takes her home.
- 36:28Speaker 8: The bathroom's on the top floor.
- 36:30Speaker 12: It happens all the time. But she is no ordinary girl.
- 36:38Speaker 12: She is Anna Scott, the most famous film star in
- 36:42Speaker 12: the world. And when they get together, everyone has something
- 36:46Speaker 12: to say.
- 36:47Speaker 2: Anna Scott!
- 36:47Speaker 3: Anna Scott!
- 36:48Speaker 4: Anna Scott!
- 36:49Speaker 3: Hello, Anna.
- 36:50Speaker 10: Scott.
- 36:51Speaker 2: Hi, guys.
- 36:53Speaker 11: Oh, Jesus, fuck!
- 36:57Speaker 3: They always do that when I leave the house.
- 36:59Speaker 8: This is a peculiarly strange person to have got involved with.
- 37:04Speaker 1: It's not Fergie, is it? You must be Spike.
- 37:10Speaker 3: Thank you, God.
- 37:11Speaker 14: I don't want to interfere on the thing, but she's
- 37:14Speaker 14: in your house.
- 37:15Speaker 3: Yes.
- 37:15Speaker 7: Well, isn't this perhaps a nice opportunity to.
- 37:20Speaker 4: Slipper one.
- 37:21Speaker 1: Spike.
- 37:22Speaker 12: But when two worlds collide.
- 37:24Speaker 8: I live.
- 37:24Speaker 2: In Notting Hill, you live in Beverly Hills. Everyone in
- 37:27Speaker 2: the world knows who you are. and the news is bad.
- 37:29Speaker 1: Tomorrow, there'll be pictures of you in every newspaper in
- 37:32Speaker 1: your goddamn underwear!
- 37:33Speaker 2: And getting worse.
- 37:34Speaker 10: I went out in my goddamn underwear, too.
- 37:36Speaker 3: Get out!
- 37:37Speaker 12: How does an ordinary boy.
- 37:38Speaker 4: Let's stay calm.
- 37:39Speaker 7: No, you can stay calm!
- 37:40Speaker 12: Keep the most famous girl in the world?
- 37:43Speaker 3: The fame thing isn't really real.
- 37:45Speaker 1: I'm also just a girl.
- 37:47Speaker 11: Standing in front of a boy.
- 37:50Speaker 2: Asking him to love her.
- 37:52Speaker 3: You daft prick.
- 37:55Speaker 12: The creators of Four Weddings and a Funeral invite you
- 37:58Speaker 12: to join Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant in a place
- 38:04Speaker 12: called Notting Hill.
- 38:05Speaker 11: I wouldn't want to go outside.
- 38:13Speaker 13: It's amazing how you can speak right to my heart.
- 38:43Speaker 7: Without saying a word You can light.
- 38:47Speaker 2: Up the dark.
- 38:54Speaker 7: Try as I may I can never explain What I
- 39:00Speaker 7: hear when you don't say.
- 39:03Speaker 2: A thing.
- 39:09Speaker 7: The smile on your face lets me know that you
- 39:13Speaker 7: need me There's a truth in your eyes saying you'll
- 39:18Speaker 7: never leave me The touch of your hand says you'll
- 39:23Speaker 7: catch me wherever I fall. You say it best.
- 39:34Speaker 2: When you say nothing at all. All right, so once again,
- 39:40Speaker 2: you've chosen a film, and it's, again, for the monster
- 39:45Speaker 2: man that you are.
- 39:45Speaker 3: Yes.
- 39:46Speaker 2: You've gone a little outside your genre.
- 39:48Speaker 3: A little.
- 39:49Speaker 2: But not a surprise for anyone who's listened to your
- 39:51Speaker 2: previous episodes on Movie Meltdown. Right, right. This week's Sober
- 39:55Speaker 2: Theater feature is Notting Hill.
- 39:57Speaker 3: Notting Hill, yes!
- 39:59Speaker 2: The year is 1999. Yes, it was. The director is
- 40:03Speaker 2: Roger Mitchell, and the plot, according to IMDb... which is
- 40:08Speaker 2: minimal as always, the life of a simple bookshop owner
- 40:12Speaker 2: changes when he meets the most famous film star in
- 40:14Speaker 2: the world. Yes.
- 40:16Speaker 3: Spoiler alert.
- 40:17Speaker 2: We're going to ruin this. So if you haven't seen it,
- 40:19Speaker 2: like several people sitting here today, just, yeah, go.
- 40:22Speaker 1: I have no desire to see this, so it's not
- 40:24Speaker 1: like you're really going to spoil it. That's true. It
- 40:26Speaker 1: came out the year I graduated high school, so if
- 40:28Speaker 1: I was going to see it.
- 40:29Speaker 3: You would if I know.
- 40:30Speaker 1: I probably would.
- 40:30Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 40:32Speaker 2: So I guess as we ease our way into it,
- 40:35Speaker 2: I mean, we're all friends here, Doug. We're all super
- 40:39Speaker 2: honest because I have my issues with this movie. So
- 40:44Speaker 2: I'm going to be as respectful as I can.
- 40:45Speaker 1: No, no, it's fine.
- 40:46Speaker 3: I didn't make it. I'm not in it. I just
- 40:49Speaker 3: like it. So go ahead.
- 40:50Speaker 2: But I know it's not somewhere in time. So I
- 40:52Speaker 2: don't want to crush your favorite movie ever. So this one,
- 40:55Speaker 2: I figure we got a little more leeway on.
- 40:56Speaker 3: That's right. You're welcome.
- 40:58Speaker 1: Leave all the crushing to me.
- 41:00Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, that's what you do.
- 41:01Speaker 3: We've already talked about Somewhere in Time and Meet Joe Black.
- 41:04Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 41:04Speaker 3: And what was the other one you said?
- 41:06Speaker 6: I was only there for Somewhere in Time.
- 41:10Speaker 2: You were there for Somewhere in Time? You were there
- 41:12Speaker 2: for this.
- 41:12Speaker 3: Why can I not ever remember the name of my
- 41:15Speaker 3: dear friend Jennifer Lawrence's movie? It was Silver Linings Playbook.
- 41:18Speaker 3: Silver Linings Playbook.
- 41:19Speaker 2: I was there for that.
- 41:20Speaker 3: That's right. It was also another hotel room. We all
- 41:23Speaker 3: sat around it.
- 41:23Speaker 2: Which is what we do.
- 41:24Speaker 3: That's what we do. I have not watched any of these.
- 41:26Speaker 2: Yeah, this one is, yeah, this one's, I do, I
- 41:29Speaker 2: will say it's an interesting perspective and story. And I
- 41:33Speaker 2: like that we get right off the bat, we get
- 41:35Speaker 2: this sort of like run through with the credits where
- 41:37Speaker 2: we get sort of blurring the line of real world
- 41:40Speaker 2: Julia Roberts. and who this character is, because it's just
- 41:43Speaker 2: pulling footage that's her on red carpet.
- 41:45Speaker 3: Basically played herself, yeah.
- 41:47Speaker 2: Yeah, she's essentially playing herself.
- 41:49Speaker 3: All set to that music by... Which, isn't that Elvis Costello?
- 41:55Speaker 6: It was, but it was originally... The Frenchman, whose name
- 41:59Speaker 6: is not popping.
- 42:00Speaker 1: Charles Aznavour.
- 42:01Speaker 3: Oh, was it really?
- 42:02Speaker 6: Yeah, he popularized it. It's a much better version.
- 42:04Speaker 3: Well, it's a great song.
- 42:05Speaker 1: It is a great song.
- 42:06Speaker 2: It is a good song. I think that kind of
- 42:07Speaker 2: helps in both incidences where they use it, as we'll
- 42:10Speaker 2: come back to later.
- 42:11Speaker 1: Yes, yes.
- 42:12Speaker 2: But I think it is interesting. I think it's also
- 42:14Speaker 2: something I guess she was kind of interested in because
- 42:17Speaker 2: it's a couple years later when she does, what is it,
- 42:21Speaker 2: Ocean's Twelve. And she's playing... Julia Roberts and another character
- 42:26Speaker 2: all in the same movie.
- 42:27Speaker 3: That's right. That's right.
- 42:28Speaker 2: It's yeah, I guess something she was kind of interested in,
- 42:31Speaker 2: but I don't know. Where do we, where do we
- 42:34Speaker 2: want to go as we get? Cause I think that's
- 42:36Speaker 2: kind of interesting. I don't think the, the overall idea
- 42:39Speaker 2: of like dealing with the idea of a normal person
- 42:43Speaker 2: coming in contact with in general, but on top of that,
- 42:46Speaker 2: like starting a relationship with someone who is one of
- 42:49Speaker 2: the most famous people in the world. Like I think
- 42:51Speaker 2: there's a lot of material there. I don't know if
- 42:54Speaker 2: they fully take it where it should go.
- 42:57Speaker 6: But also presaged, presaged.
- 42:59Speaker 1: How do you say that?
- 43:00Speaker 6: I've only read it.
- 43:01Speaker 2: Presage.
- 43:01Speaker 6: I've never tried to say this word.
- 43:03Speaker 2: Anyway, it anticipated.
- 43:04Speaker 3: I don't even know this word.
- 43:05Speaker 6: It anticipated her real life experience where she had a
- 43:08Speaker 6: relationship with Danny Motor, who was just a dude who
- 43:11Speaker 6: was a cameraman.
- 43:12Speaker 9: Right.
- 43:12Speaker 6: And then all of a sudden was thrust into the spotlight.
- 43:14Speaker 1: So.
- 43:15Speaker 3: Right.
- 43:15Speaker 6: Nobody saw that coming. And then life imitated art.
- 43:18Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 43:18Speaker 2: Because up to that point, it was like Kiefer Sutherland
- 43:21Speaker 2: and then her weird marriage to Lyle and all this other. So, yeah.
- 43:25Speaker 6: Maybe she was like, this could work.
- 43:26Speaker 2: She's like, no, no, regular people. You guys are annoying. No,
- 43:28Speaker 2: thank you.
- 43:29Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 43:30Speaker 3: But what.
- 43:31Speaker 2: See, but.
- 43:33Speaker 3: What sings to me about it off the bat, the
- 43:35Speaker 3: basic plot line is that Hugh Grant plays this humble
- 43:39Speaker 3: little bookshop owner. in uh in uh what was that
- 43:42Speaker 3: in uh in uh notting hill that's the name of
- 43:45Speaker 3: the movie uh and and one day julia roberts a
- 43:49Speaker 3: character uh i forget her name in the movie was
- 43:52Speaker 3: her character name was something blocked it out.
- 43:55Speaker 2: It's very simple like julia roberts yeah yeah i should
- 43:58Speaker 2: have looked she is her own like stand-in version of.
- 44:01Speaker 3: Herself happens into the this uh she was filming something
- 44:04Speaker 3: in the in the town and then came came through
- 44:06Speaker 3: the bookshop just looking for some books and And he notices,
- 44:09Speaker 3: oh my gosh, that's that very famous actress. Anna? Anna, yes.
- 44:14Speaker 3: Anna Kent or Anna Scott.
- 44:18Speaker 2: There we go.
- 44:19Speaker 3: There you go.
- 44:20Speaker 2: As I look it up.
- 44:21Speaker 3: We did it. So she plays Anna Scott, who's like
- 44:24Speaker 3: the Julia Roberts in film land.
- 44:26Speaker 4: In this world.
- 44:27Speaker 3: Yeah. And so right away, I was interested because being
- 44:34Speaker 3: in the showbiz myself as an actor, when I.
- 44:37Speaker 3: Brush with and meet and enjoy and like and and
- 44:40Speaker 3: connect with someone who's not in show business the differences
- 44:43Speaker 3: come out immediately and have to be dealt with right
- 44:46Speaker 3: because it's a different world that i live in and
- 44:49Speaker 3: uh and it's becoming more of that the farther i
- 44:51Speaker 3: go since we first started talking more has happened for
- 44:54Speaker 3: me oh yeah so this story the notting hill story
- 44:55Speaker 3: is becoming more real to me every time i watch
- 44:57Speaker 3: it now.
- 44:58Speaker 2: As you're in a not to brag for you an
- 45:00Speaker 2: academy award-winning film as of last week.
- 45:04Speaker 3: Thank you. Right. So last Sunday, for instance, I was
- 45:07Speaker 3: just on the world stage with a billion viewers watching worldwide.
- 45:11Speaker 2: We were one of them. We were sitting there watching going, Doug!
- 45:14Speaker 3: Right. So that's a very surreal situation to be in
- 45:17Speaker 3: when you're hopping up on stage with the best picture
- 45:19Speaker 3: win and all the red carpet attention right ahead of time.
- 45:22Speaker 3: I was on the E! channel with Julianna Rancic ahead
- 45:24Speaker 3: of time. So all of that nonsense. You were crazy, crazy.
- 45:27Speaker 3: And then the next day, I'm taking the trash out
- 45:29Speaker 3: at my house. Right? So real life has to happen
- 45:33Speaker 3: in conjunction with this crazy glamorized life. So that's why
- 45:37Speaker 3: I really relate to Notting Hill.
- 45:40Speaker 2: That is one of the things I was going to
- 45:41Speaker 2: ask you, because just seeing you again over the years
- 45:45Speaker 2: that we've been doing this, and I will try to
- 45:48Speaker 2: stay out of the way and let you do what
- 45:49Speaker 2: you have to do. But because of that, I didn't
- 45:51Speaker 2: get like firsthand action of like watching people fall all
- 45:56Speaker 2: over themselves on occasion or completely clam up or get
- 46:00Speaker 2: super freaked out by it all.
- 46:01Speaker 3: On the convention floor?
- 46:02Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. When you're dealing with people. Because again, I
- 46:05Speaker 2: feel like in this world more than anywhere else, you
- 46:07Speaker 2: probably are like, you can't walk through the building as
- 46:10Speaker 2: we were talking about before we got here. So in
- 46:12Speaker 2: the grocery, you might have a shot depending on what
- 46:15Speaker 2: you're doing.
- 46:17Speaker 3: And right now, just for your listeners to know, we're
- 46:20Speaker 3: at Lexington Comic and Toy Convention. Comic and Toy Convention, right.
- 46:25Speaker 3: And it's been really busy and crazy.
- 46:28Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 46:29Speaker 3: But again, coming off the Oscars last week, but I've
- 46:31Speaker 3: gotten more press this year than ever in my life.
- 46:33Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 46:34Speaker 3: I probably have done more press and more profile pieces
- 46:38Speaker 3: in like IndieWire, BuzzFeed, New York Times, LA Times, with
- 46:41Speaker 3: my own face showing. So I've gotten more face recognition
- 46:44Speaker 3: this year than in my entire 30 years combined.
- 46:46Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 46:48Speaker 3: So that's making it a bit more crazy to walk
- 46:50Speaker 3: through a crowd that is a comic fan base.
- 46:53Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 46:54Speaker 3: So, yeah, so it's a little kooky.
- 46:56Speaker 2: A little kooky. I think, again, in this world, in
- 46:58Speaker 2: the convention world, I think you are kind of that,
- 47:01Speaker 2: almost that level where she can't walk down the street.
- 47:04Speaker 2: So again, here, it's like you're trying to walk through
- 47:06Speaker 2: a convention to just go get a sandwich. You know,
- 47:08Speaker 2: it's like, it's a lost cause for you.
- 47:10Speaker 3: You know, it'll take an hour.
- 47:11Speaker 2: But, but I mean, how, I mean, how has that been,
- 47:14Speaker 2: I think, with you just, because that's what you kind
- 47:17Speaker 2: of watch is her having to deal with everyone around her.
- 47:20Speaker 2: It's not just Hugh Grant's character. It's, Everyone that he knows,
- 47:24Speaker 2: everyone she comes in contact with, you suddenly hit this
- 47:27Speaker 2: wall of, oh, I know who you are. And then
- 47:29Speaker 2: everything changes immediately.
- 47:32Speaker 3: And one of my favorite scenes regarding that issue is
- 47:34Speaker 3: the dinner. When Hugh Grant asks her, hey, what are
- 47:40Speaker 3: you doing tonight? And he's like, oh, crap, I got
- 47:41Speaker 3: to go to my sister's dinner party for her birthday.
- 47:45Speaker 3: And Julia says, well, can I come along with?
- 47:48Speaker 9: Right.
- 47:48Speaker 3: Which is something I would do.
- 47:49Speaker 2: That wouldn't surprise me. Right.
- 47:51Speaker 3: Right. So, so they end up in this, in this,
- 47:54Speaker 3: you know, regular house with these regular people. And, and
- 47:58Speaker 3: everybody's like, oh my God, it's Scott.
- 48:00Speaker 6: Right.
- 48:00Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 48:01Speaker 3: Except for that one guy.
- 48:02Speaker 4: Right.
- 48:03Speaker 2: There's always somebody clueless in the group.
- 48:05Speaker 3: I know that guy. I've met that guy more times
- 48:08Speaker 3: than I can count. And so I think he was,
- 48:10Speaker 3: he was the guy played by the fellow from Downton Abbey.
- 48:13Speaker 3: Another thing you probably don't watch.
- 48:15Speaker 2: Every week.
- 48:16Speaker 3: He was Lord something that was the head of the
- 48:20Speaker 3: household there in that show. But so he comes in
- 48:23Speaker 3: and says, oh, Anna, nice to meet you.
- 48:26Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 48:26Speaker 3: And he's like, so now what is it you do? Oh,
- 48:28Speaker 3: I'm an actress.
- 48:29Speaker 1: Oh, how great.
- 48:30Speaker 3: Oh, it must be hard.
- 48:31Speaker 4: Must be hard.
- 48:31Speaker 3: Must be hard scraping by.
- 48:33Speaker 1: Scraping by.
- 48:33Speaker 3: Just like, yeah. And so she's like, well, yeah, no.
- 48:35Speaker 10: Mm-hmm.
- 48:36Speaker 3: It's been okay. I have some friends who have been
- 48:39Speaker 3: doing theater for years. They can't scrape up two pennies together.
- 48:43Speaker 3: And so she's kind of listening and taking it in.
- 48:44Speaker 3: And so he finally asked her, so how much money
- 48:50Speaker 3: can you make or do you make, you know? And
- 48:52Speaker 3: I've been asked this question more times than I can count.
- 48:55Speaker 3: People are just boldly asking, so how much you make
- 48:57Speaker 3: on that movie, right?
- 48:58Speaker 2: It's a little rude, but it's how people are. Right, right.
- 49:00Speaker 3: So when she says to him, well, $ 15 million, that's
- 49:04Speaker 3: when he figures out, oh, she's somebody I should know.
- 49:06Speaker 2: Oh, crap, right? What I thought was funny is I
- 49:09Speaker 2: was like, yeah, I was doing the math. I'm like,
- 49:11Speaker 2: 99 female star? Yeah, yeah. The guys were making $ 40 million,
- 49:14Speaker 2: but she wasn't lying. That's probably what she would have
- 49:17Speaker 2: been making.
- 49:17Speaker 3: At that point. I think at that point she had reached,
- 49:19Speaker 3: it was that when was aaron brockovich right after this
- 49:21Speaker 3: because she was doing the 20 million at that point.
- 49:24Speaker 2: That bumped her up because yeah oscar nomination right.
- 49:27Speaker 3: And win she won yeah so crazy crazy.
- 49:30Speaker 6: Time I was looking at the trivia about the movie,
- 49:32Speaker 6: and apparently that was the actual amount she made for
- 49:34Speaker 6: Notting Hill.
- 49:35Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 49:35Speaker 6: And when they did the first couple takes, she said
- 49:37Speaker 6: 10 million, and then the second take, she said 12 million.
- 49:39Speaker 2: Is that right?
- 49:40Speaker 6: Yeah, she said 15 million.
- 49:42Speaker 3: I did not know that. Good for you, yes.
- 49:44Speaker 6: But I have actually been that person, by the way.
- 49:46Speaker 6: I was on a train, a cross-country train with John
- 49:49Speaker 6: Hawks for two days, where I was giving him pep
- 49:50Speaker 6: talks about acting.
- 49:51Speaker 9: Oh.
- 49:52Speaker 1: Bless my heart.
- 49:54Speaker 2: We'll get it together one day.
- 49:56Speaker 1: I'm encouraging him, like, yeah, there's a future for you.
- 49:58Speaker 2: You got this.
- 49:59Speaker 6: I know you're a farm boy from Minnesota, but you
- 50:01Speaker 6: can do this thing.
- 50:02Speaker 3: Oh, and he was gracious, wasn't he?
- 50:03Speaker 1: So gracious. Never told me.
- 50:06Speaker 6: And this was sort of the, you know, there weren't
- 50:07Speaker 6: smartphones then. You couldn't, like, figure things out that way.
- 50:10Speaker 2: You couldn't look them up fast and say, who is this?
- 50:11Speaker 6: When I got home, I was like, oh, my God,
- 50:12Speaker 6: you're such an idiot.
- 50:13Speaker 3: What have I done?
- 50:14Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 50:14Speaker 3: Oh, when you got back to your desktop computer. When
- 50:16Speaker 3: I got back to it.
- 50:17Speaker 6: A giant desktop to computer that took up the whole thing.
- 50:22Speaker 2: Sure, sure, of course. Well, that's, I mean, again, that's
- 50:26Speaker 2: just you kind of coming in contact with people. But
- 50:29Speaker 2: on top of that, I guess we also get to
- 50:32Speaker 2: a weird little angle once they sort of go into
- 50:35Speaker 2: this relationship thing. So that was, again, to try to
- 50:39Speaker 2: get your take on it. You've been involved in a
- 50:41Speaker 2: relationship for many years now. Yeah. And Seemingly, she's not
- 50:45Speaker 2: thrilled with a lot of this nonsense that you have
- 50:48Speaker 2: to do.
- 50:48Speaker 3: Mrs. Dory doesn't hang around in public a lot. So
- 50:50Speaker 3: getting her to come out of the house and dress up.
- 50:53Speaker 3: She takes the Oscars. She went to the Oscars with me.
- 50:56Speaker 3: I saw the photos. She went to the Golden Globes
- 50:57Speaker 3: with me as well. She's great. But she likes to
- 51:01Speaker 3: be out of the limelight. So getting interviewed on the
- 51:04Speaker 3: red carpet with George Pinocchio from ABC was kind of like, wait,
- 51:09Speaker 3: we're going nationwide right now?
- 51:10Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 51:12Speaker 3: But see, here's what happens, too, when you get to
- 51:14Speaker 3: that level, which is really sweet. I was wearing borrowed
- 51:17Speaker 3: clothes from Armani.
- 51:18Speaker 2: All right.
- 51:19Speaker 3: And they fitted me.
- 51:20Speaker 2: You aren't wearing Armani every day?
- 51:21Speaker 3: No, I would love to.
- 51:23Speaker 4: Are you kidding?
- 51:23Speaker 2: Armani, get a hold of this.
- 51:24Speaker 3: I know, I know. And Mrs. Laurie was wearing a
- 51:27Speaker 3: jewel that was on loan from Safi Kalima. It was
- 51:30Speaker 3: Tanzanite circled with diamonds. Shut up.
- 51:32Speaker 1: Nice.
- 51:33Speaker 3: No, no.
- 51:33Speaker 4: Okay.
- 51:34Speaker 2: Nice.
- 51:34Speaker 3: So just to let you know. that necklace was worth
- 51:36Speaker 3: more than the house I grew up in.
- 51:38Speaker 1: Right.
- 51:39Speaker 3: So the next day after the Oscars, they came in
- 51:41Speaker 3: a armored truck with a guy with a gun on
- 51:43Speaker 3: his side to come collect the necklace from our house.
- 51:46Speaker 3: So that's, That's an experience that normal people just don't have.
- 51:50Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 51:50Speaker 3: And I never want this to become normal. I want
- 51:54Speaker 3: to realize how ridiculous this all is. So that's why
- 51:58Speaker 3: I like to go to the birthday party at the
- 51:59Speaker 3: house with the regular people.
- 52:01Speaker 2: Does she still have issues with just some of the
- 52:04Speaker 2: other stuff? I mean, if she avoids it, but as
- 52:07Speaker 2: far as like, I guess your treatment by people or
- 52:09Speaker 2: that kind of thing.
- 52:10Speaker 3: The Comic-Con atmosphere is just too chaotic for her. She
- 52:14Speaker 3: went to Comic-Con in San Diego with me Twice. And
- 52:17Speaker 3: I think she'll be done with that for a lifetime now.
- 52:19Speaker 2: It's overwhelming for me, and I do this every couple.
- 52:22Speaker 3: Of weeks of my life. It was exhausting for her,
- 52:25Speaker 3: and she wasn't the one having to answer everybody's questions about,
- 52:29Speaker 3: how long is this for makeup for when you're wearing
- 52:32Speaker 3: this fish thing?
- 52:35Speaker 2: That's exactly what I was going to ask you next.
- 52:36Speaker 2: Wait a minute. You stole my question.
- 52:40Speaker 3: By the way, the fact that people want to know
- 52:43Speaker 3: is a huge compliment to me. If anyone's been seeing
- 52:46Speaker 3: anything I've been in, I love them and I adore
- 52:49Speaker 3: them for it.
- 52:50Speaker 2: I think a few people.
- 52:51Speaker 3: A few. That's very sweet.
- 52:54Speaker 2: I don't know. Some of my... What were your issues
- 52:58Speaker 2: with nodding?
- 52:59Speaker 8: Do you want my.
- 53:01Speaker 2: Bigger issue or like the basic stuff as we get
- 53:03Speaker 2: into it like it's just very light very light stuff
- 53:07Speaker 2: like this guy well first of all that anybody what
- 53:10Speaker 2: a quaint time in 99 when you could have a
- 53:12Speaker 2: bookstore but on top of that a super specialized bookstore
- 53:16Speaker 2: travel only travel books like wow this could not exist
- 53:21Speaker 2: in this world it's rather specific yeah but on top
- 53:23Speaker 2: of that i also i We were in his life
- 53:26Speaker 2: for at least a good year and a half, two
- 53:28Speaker 2: year span. He doesn't ever seem like he travels. Why
- 53:32Speaker 2: is this? I feel like... Look at you.
- 53:35Speaker 9: A guy.
- 53:37Speaker 2: I'm like, how are you? He just reads the books?
- 53:40Speaker 2: He's running a business.
- 53:41Speaker 3: When does he have time to travel?
- 53:43Speaker 2: But if you're in love with travel, wouldn't you want
- 53:45Speaker 2: to get out there? Just a one week out of
- 53:48Speaker 2: the year.
- 53:49Speaker 3: He probably already did the traveling and now he owns
- 53:51Speaker 3: the bookshop to talk about it. I don't know.
- 53:53Speaker 2: I didn't see him packing his bags.
- 53:56Speaker 3: He spent all his money on travel exactly.
- 54:00Speaker 6: That's what makes it poetic he lives a life of
- 54:02Speaker 6: fantasy and then fantasy becomes his real life and then
- 54:05Speaker 6: he doesn't know how to deal with.
- 54:06Speaker 2: It I thought maybe that's what they were going but
- 54:08Speaker 2: they never addressed that I thought maybe it was more
- 54:10Speaker 2: of an it's a wonderful life thing of like my
- 54:12Speaker 2: dream is to travel the world and then the world
- 54:14Speaker 2: scrapes you over and your whole life is spent not
- 54:17Speaker 2: doing what it is you wanted to do. That would
- 54:19Speaker 2: actually be kind of ironic. And like, I would give
- 54:21Speaker 2: them that one, but they don't ever really take it
- 54:23Speaker 2: down that road.
- 54:24Speaker 6: They let you take it down that road.
- 54:26Speaker 2: Yeah. It's kind of lazy writing, but anyway, go ahead.
- 54:31Speaker 3: No, dish all you want, baby. Okay.
- 54:35Speaker 2: No, I think my main issue with it is once
- 54:37Speaker 2: we get into this, like, And it's really weird because
- 54:41Speaker 2: I– we've had some snide comments about Julia over the years,
- 54:45Speaker 2: but I really grew up, like, really liking Julia Roberts.
- 54:48Speaker 9: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 54:48Speaker 2: And, like, I was sucked in for Pretty Woman like
- 54:50Speaker 2: the rest of America. Like, I was totally on board.
- 54:53Speaker 2: I think she is very likable and has a real, like,
- 54:58Speaker 2: just sort of spark on screen.
- 54:59Speaker 9: She does.
- 55:00Speaker 2: I don't really like her in this movie. You didn't really?
- 55:03Speaker 2: I feel like there's– not only is there not really
- 55:06Speaker 2: chemistry between these two characters– But I feel like she
- 55:09Speaker 2: just never comes off as warm.
- 55:12Speaker 7: Ever.
- 55:12Speaker 3: They're on again, off again, on again, off again a
- 55:14Speaker 3: few times throughout the movie because of the differences from
- 55:16Speaker 3: where they come from.
- 55:17Speaker 2: Almost feels like going through the motions version of it too.
- 55:20Speaker 2: I don't ever feel like there's a connection there that
- 55:23Speaker 2: would bring them back together as a couple. I kind
- 55:26Speaker 2: of wish that there was. But I think that's my thing.
- 55:29Speaker 2: As we get into this, like, that's what I'm like,
- 55:31Speaker 2: I don't even know how you strip that out of
- 55:33Speaker 2: Julia Roberts. But I'm like, I would really want it
- 55:36Speaker 2: to be like there's, you know, this... Cause she even
- 55:39Speaker 2: has the guy, she's just a girl and she's just
- 55:42Speaker 2: kind of the, the, the fame is all kind of fake,
- 55:44Speaker 2: but based on her like behavior throughout it, I'm like,
- 55:48Speaker 2: you're not really selling there. If there was some normal
- 55:51Speaker 2: girl underneath it, that was super warm and super likable.
- 55:54Speaker 2: I could understand like, okay, this is, this is who
- 55:57Speaker 2: he falls in love with. Not everybody else wants the
- 55:59Speaker 2: fame version, but he actually genuinely cares about this girl.
- 56:03Speaker 2: But I don't even feel like we ever get to that.
- 56:05Speaker 2: I think she just sort of goes through the motions
- 56:07Speaker 2: of being the super celebrity that she is. And then he,
- 56:11Speaker 2: I don't even know what draws him in. Cause he
- 56:13Speaker 2: doesn't even seem like he cares about the fame end
- 56:15Speaker 2: of it from the get go where everybody else around
- 56:18Speaker 2: him does.
- 56:19Speaker 4: Right.
- 56:19Speaker 2: So it's like, I don't even know. I think his
- 56:22Speaker 2: almost feels more like, well, I don't have any, I'm,
- 56:25Speaker 2: I'm alone. And this girl kind of likes me. And I,
- 56:29Speaker 2: I guess I'll go out with her. I don't know. That's,
- 56:31Speaker 2: I think, the biggest part.
- 56:32Speaker 3: Which is what appealed to her, which is what appealed
- 56:34Speaker 3: to her character because he wasn't a slobbering fan going,
- 56:37Speaker 3: oh my gosh, you're Anna Scott. You want a date? Yeah,
- 56:41Speaker 3: he was more like, he thought she was lovely. Yeah.
- 56:45Speaker 3: And she says a very telling line about her life
- 56:49Speaker 3: when they have finally gotten together and consummated their relationship
- 56:52Speaker 3: and gone to bed. She was, the next morning, she
- 56:56Speaker 3: was a bit apprehensive about how this was going to
- 56:57Speaker 3: go now because she said, she quoted a line from,
- 57:01Speaker 3: was it Lana Turner?
- 57:02Speaker 6: Rita Hayworth.
- 57:02Speaker 3: Rita Hayworth. And the line was, they go to bed
- 57:05Speaker 3: with Gilda and wake up with me.
- 57:08Speaker 2: I will, that was, again, I was making notes of
- 57:11Speaker 2: good stuff. I was like, that line, that moment was good.
- 57:14Speaker 3: Right.
- 57:15Speaker 2: It, it turns a corner real fast and like her.
- 57:18Speaker 3: Because the paparazzi's outside.
- 57:20Speaker 2: But immediately blaming him and immediately getting angry at him
- 57:24Speaker 2: when like he didn't do it. Like if you want
- 57:26Speaker 2: to be angry at the paparazzi or if you found
- 57:28Speaker 2: out he.
- 57:28Speaker 3: She was angry at his cavalier attitude.
- 57:30Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 57:31Speaker 3: And she was feeling the weight of like, oh my gosh,
- 57:33Speaker 3: a scandal. Oh, geez, I can't afford this right now. Yeah, so... Again,
- 57:37Speaker 3: two different perspectives. It is. He's a civilian doing his thing,
- 57:41Speaker 3: and she's the movie star of the world.
- 57:43Speaker 2: And from his angle, it certainly would come out a
- 57:45Speaker 2: little better. Yeah, yeah, yeah. He has some sort of
- 57:47Speaker 2: weird bragging story that she calls him on.
- 57:49Speaker 1: Right, right, right.
- 57:50Speaker 2: I will give you that.
- 57:51Speaker 3: Even though that wasn't his angle.
- 57:53Speaker 2: No.
- 57:54Speaker 3: But she finds that out later.
- 57:56Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 57:56Speaker 3: You see, when she comes back around with that other
- 57:58Speaker 3: great speech she gives, oh, my gosh, in the bookstore, right?
- 58:02Speaker 3: Come on now. The romantic in me loved that moment.
- 58:05Speaker 3: after she they on again off again on again yeah
- 58:07Speaker 3: and they reconnect after the big breakup thing and then
- 58:10Speaker 3: she's back making the movie in england he comes to
- 58:12Speaker 3: visit her on the set kind of like and she
- 58:14Speaker 3: sees him and they and she's like oh there's some
- 58:16Speaker 3: things unsaid to hang around and she then and he
- 58:20Speaker 3: has always wearing a headset for the sound department and
- 58:22Speaker 3: hears her talking about oh that guy over there i
- 58:24Speaker 3: don't even know why he's here so she's kind of
- 58:27Speaker 3: telling her co-star that about that guy and he, she
- 58:29Speaker 3: doesn't know what he's listening. Oh, the confusion, the misunderstandings.
- 58:32Speaker 2: I love it.
- 58:33Speaker 1: Okay.
- 58:33Speaker 3: And then, and then, and then she figures, she figures
- 58:36Speaker 3: this out and she comes to the bookstore before she
- 58:38Speaker 3: leaves and says, okay, okay, okay. I've been bad. This
- 58:42Speaker 3: is why you don't have to like her again.
- 58:44Speaker 2: No, I yelled at the screen at that point. She's like,
- 58:47Speaker 2: I believe it. Actually, she's like, something about my... Yeah,
- 58:51Speaker 2: it's like, I've behaved so badly. And I was like, yes,
- 58:54Speaker 2: you have. You've been horrible to him. Why would he
- 58:57Speaker 2: take you back? Right, right. I know you're a millionaire,
- 59:01Speaker 2: but I'm sorry if you've just treated him... And then
- 59:03Speaker 2: that window when he's listening on the headphones, I'm like,
- 59:06Speaker 2: I feel like that's a window into who she really is.
- 59:10Speaker 2: I feel like she sells the story of this guy
- 59:13Speaker 2: that she's talking to is a big jerk and it's
- 59:14Speaker 2: none of his business. But again, her cavalier attitude at
- 59:18Speaker 2: that point, I'm just like, hmm. I don't know. I
- 59:20Speaker 2: feel like that's who she is.
- 59:22Speaker 3: But that's how she explained it. I don't want that.
- 59:24Speaker 3: That guy, he's a gossip. He's like, I don't want
- 59:26Speaker 3: to know anything. So she had to put on the
- 59:28Speaker 3: front with her co-star to say, oh, that guy, no,
- 59:30Speaker 3: he's nothing. Because he would have laughed about it. So
- 59:34Speaker 3: I believed her because she has to protect herself and
- 59:36Speaker 3: her love.
- 59:38Speaker 2: I'm just saying.
- 59:40Speaker 3: I'm getting into it, aren't I?
- 59:42Speaker 1: I don't actually want to watch the movie. I just
- 59:43Speaker 1: want a visual interpretation of Doug.
- 59:45Speaker 2: We're all going to act it out right now.
- 59:48Speaker 1: No, Doug with a one-man play version.
- 59:51Speaker 2: He's certainly better.
- 59:52Speaker 3: Equipped for it, sure.
- 59:53Speaker 2: We'll get you a Julia wig and you'll get this going.
- 59:57Speaker 3: I'm just a girl asking a boy to love her.
- 1:00:00Speaker 3: What was her line?
- 1:00:01Speaker 6: Just a girl standing in front of a boy asking
- 1:00:03Speaker 6: him to love her.
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: I know. How could you not love this movie?
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: No, no.
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: I'm still.
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: I'm not sold.
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: No, it's all right.
- 1:00:15Speaker 3: It's all right.
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: For the good parts, though, if we're like the... And
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: this falls... Again, I feel like most of my issues
- 1:00:20Speaker 2: are with the writing, which is not our director. I
- 1:00:23Speaker 2: looked up the difference between.
- 1:00:25Speaker 8: The two here.
- 1:00:25Speaker 3: The writer and the director? Okay.
- 1:00:26Speaker 2: Yeah, I was like, did he do both of these?
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: But no, it's Richard Mitchell is the director, but... Richard
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: Curtis is our writer.
- 1:00:34Speaker 4: Okay, okay.
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: Who, if you looked into, do you know him?
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: He did all the things.
- 1:00:38Speaker 6: He did Four Weddings and a Funeral and all the things.
- 1:00:41Speaker 2: Do you know the more recent? I got to one
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: and I'm like, oh, well, we have to bring this
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: up with Lucy.
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: There's going to be a whole bunch of movies that
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: I have not watched.
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: Yeah, probably. You haven't watched Love Actually. You haven't watched
- 1:00:50Speaker 2: Four Weddings and a Funeral. Love Actually is better. I'll
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: give you that. It's awesome.
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: And that's your next movie.
- 1:00:55Speaker 3: We'll talk about it next time.
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: And I won't watch that one either. But no, no.
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: For you specifically, Lucy, he is the one who wrote
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: the screenplay for War Horse.
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: War Horse.
- 1:01:06Speaker 4: I like War Horse.
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: That's a good movie. We've had an epic war horse
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: battle on this show.
- 1:01:13Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:01:13Speaker 3: Cause I liked it and didn't like it all at
- 1:01:15Speaker 3: the same time.
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:01:17Speaker 3: There were moments. That's the appropriate response.
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: See the one I will give him credit for is
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: about time was him. And I thought that's, again, that's
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: one of those, I feel like he's improving as time
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: goes on. Cause that's one of the more recent ones.
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: And I feel like he's still got a very light,
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: touch to it for something that's about time travel it
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: should be huge stakes and really heavy but it still
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: plays mostly like a romantic comedy kind of so that
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: one i think is actually pretty well put together as
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: far as trying to find that balance and not make
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: it all about weird time traveling stuff which actually it's
- 1:01:51Speaker 2: about as much scientific time travel as somewhere in time
- 1:01:54Speaker 2: so If you haven't seen it, that's definitely one for you.
- 1:01:56Speaker 3: And it's called what again?
- 1:01:57Speaker 2: About Time.
- 1:01:58Speaker 3: About Time.
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: It's pretty recent.
- 1:01:59Speaker 3: I've never even heard this title.
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: Yeah, it's definitely... I think you will definitely like that one.
- 1:02:03Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: But this one, as we go... Yeah, I think my
- 1:02:05Speaker 2: issue is more with the writing because Mitchell directing... That
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: little movement scene as we go through the seasons.
- 1:02:13Speaker 3: That was great.
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: That's an amazing concept. That is really well executed. So
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: I'm like, everything about that, I'm giving you credit for
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: as a director. So that's a pretty great version of
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: like having some sort of basic vision and following through
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: so again i'm finding i'm finding good things here about.
- 1:02:32Speaker 3: It okay and did you not find hugh grant slightly
- 1:02:35Speaker 3: charming at least with his one-liners and his in his
- 1:02:38Speaker 3: british again i.
- 1:02:39Speaker 2: Feel like even less than normal and i never sold
- 1:02:42Speaker 2: on him okay but i feel like and maybe i'm
- 1:02:44Speaker 2: blaming the writing again i feel like all of that
- 1:02:47Speaker 2: stuff just kind of falls flat for me like to
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: me if you if you've got a a not even
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: a punchline really, just a weird joke that lands with
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: like hounds and horses. You know, it's like that should
- 1:03:00Speaker 2: have been much that had whole set up with the,
- 1:03:03Speaker 2: him pretending to work for a magazine. should have been
- 1:03:07Speaker 2: a pretty wacky, over-the-top situation of him, again, of mistaken
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: identity and him trying to cover for it.
- 1:03:14Speaker 3: He gets into a press junket and she thought she'd
- 1:03:17Speaker 3: be done with the press junket by the time she
- 1:03:18Speaker 3: invites him to the hotel.
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: But he doesn't know that.
- 1:03:20Speaker 3: He gets there, he's sucked into the press junket. And
- 1:03:22Speaker 3: what magazine are you with? He looks on the table,
- 1:03:25Speaker 3: he's a horse and hound magazine. So he says, horse
- 1:03:27Speaker 3: and hound. And so why would Horse and Hound be
- 1:03:30Speaker 3: reviewing her current movie?
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: Again, I feel like there's potential there to actually be
- 1:03:35Speaker 2: really funny, and all of it, I feel like, just
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: falls flat.
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: I do remember that Miss Scott is also keen to
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: talk about her next project, which is shooting later in
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: the summer.
- 1:03:46Speaker 2: Ah, yes. Excellent. Excellent.
- 1:03:52Speaker 4: Any horses in that one? Or hounds, for that matter.
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: Our readers are equally intrigued by both species.
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: It takes place on a submarine.
- 1:04:05Speaker 9: Oh.
- 1:04:07Speaker 3: Well, bad luck. But, um.
- 1:04:13Speaker 7: If there were horses in it, would you be riding them,
- 1:04:17Speaker 7: or would you be getting a stunt horse, double man thing?
- 1:04:21Speaker 6: Subtle British humor.
- 1:04:23Speaker 3: Subtle British humor, you're right. And so he gets in
- 1:04:26Speaker 3: the room with her and then her publicist is listening.
- 1:04:28Speaker 3: So he says, so were there any horses in your movie?
- 1:04:31Speaker 3: She says, it takes place in outer space.
- 1:04:33Speaker 9: Oh.
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: See, that's what I'm looking for out of a movie.
- 1:04:37Speaker 3: Right, right, right. So there were funny, subtle British humor.
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: Get on board, man.
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: If you knew Space Horses, I would have watched it.
- 1:04:45Speaker 6: I think that maybe part of the problem with Julia
- 1:04:47Speaker 6: Roberts is the same problem with Andy McDowell in Four
- 1:04:50Speaker 6: Weddings and a Funeral, which is that I think American
- 1:04:52Speaker 6: actresses have trouble with his dialogue because it's so British,
- 1:04:56Speaker 6: and everybody else in the movie knows exactly what they're doing,
- 1:04:58Speaker 6: and Risa Fonz, and everybody's, like, perfect, and all of the, like,
- 1:05:02Speaker 6: But then she comes in and there's lines where I'm like, oh,
- 1:05:04Speaker 6: that line would have been so better served.
- 1:05:06Speaker 3: With the British accent.
- 1:05:07Speaker 6: Exactly, with the British accent.
- 1:05:09Speaker 3: And the right brain to come.
- 1:05:10Speaker 6: So I think that maybe that's part of why she
- 1:05:13Speaker 6: wasn't convincing to you, Brian, as a love interest that
- 1:05:16Speaker 6: he would find appealing because she was kind of stumbling
- 1:05:18Speaker 6: over some of the dialogues.
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: Well, and even, but they don't even make good on
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: the horse thing. Like, at the end, she's making it. No,
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: he does that joke. That's mediocre. But the fact that
- 1:05:28Speaker 2: she's making a movie because of, like, he almost inspired
- 1:05:32Speaker 2: her to, like, go back to her roots and do
- 1:05:34Speaker 2: something theatrical and literature and all of this. So, like,
- 1:05:37Speaker 2: he gets on the set, and there's horses there. And
- 1:05:39Speaker 2: I'm like, okay, this is where you finish that joke.
- 1:05:42Speaker 2: You set it up in the beginning. Never do anything
- 1:05:44Speaker 2: with it.
- 1:05:44Speaker 6: Because that was the follow-up on the Henry James. They
- 1:05:46Speaker 6: were already following up on something, which is that she
- 1:05:49Speaker 6: had chosen a project that he had suggested.
- 1:05:51Speaker 3: To her because she really... The Henry James.
- 1:05:53Speaker 8: Yes.
- 1:05:53Speaker 3: Right, right, right.
- 1:05:54Speaker 6: Because there were real feelings there.
- 1:05:56Speaker 3: See, yeah. Get in touch with your real feelings, Brian.
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: My real feelings tell me that.
- 1:06:00Speaker 3: Are hateful, is what they are.
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: A little, a little bit, yeah. You're not the first
- 1:06:04Speaker 2: one to tell me that.
- 1:06:06Speaker 6: I will say about the end, I had not seen
- 1:06:10Speaker 6: this movie since I saw it originally in theaters in 1999.
- 1:06:13Speaker 6: And so I had completely kind of forgotten about it.
- 1:06:15Speaker 6: And then in the course of that period of time,
- 1:06:17Speaker 6: I saw the now classic Mahogany. And did you notice
- 1:06:21Speaker 6: that Mahogany... they kind of stole the whole ending from Mahogany.
- 1:06:25Speaker 9: Really?
- 1:06:25Speaker 3: I haven't seen Mahogany since forever. Diana Ross.
- 1:06:28Speaker 6: Yes, Diana Ross and Billy Dee Williams.
- 1:06:30Speaker 2: You're sitting a few tables down for Billy Dee.
- 1:06:32Speaker 3: We have the same manager for these traveling shows.
- 1:06:34Speaker 6: Oh, fantastic. Well, it's my favorite Billy Dee Williams performance,
- 1:06:37Speaker 6: mostly because he has to pretend at some point in
- 1:06:39Speaker 6: the movie that Anthony Perkins could actually beat him up,
- 1:06:41Speaker 6: which I can't even imagine.
- 1:06:42Speaker 3: The level of acting that that required.
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: Back in the day, no.
- 1:06:47Speaker 6: But in the final scene, and I guess this is
- 1:06:50Speaker 6: kind of a Mahogany spoiler, but Billy Dee is at
- 1:06:55Speaker 6: a rally and he's talking and then a woman from
- 1:06:58Speaker 6: the back and there's a call back and it's Diana
- 1:07:00Speaker 6: Ross and she's screaming out a question and she says
- 1:07:03Speaker 6: I want my man back and then he thinks that
- 1:07:05Speaker 6: she's just a random woman there but it turns out
- 1:07:07Speaker 6: she's there to get him back and it's exactly the
- 1:07:09Speaker 6: same thing and then the music swells but it's kind
- 1:07:11Speaker 6: of the same ending but it works man it so
- 1:07:13Speaker 6: works it worked then it works now.
- 1:07:15Speaker 3: I could watch Julia smile with that music playing over
- 1:07:18Speaker 3: while she and Hugh are looking at each other all
- 1:07:20Speaker 3: day I could watch it all day.
- 1:07:21Speaker 6: Yeah, I just kept thinking, you know, people always describe
- 1:07:23Speaker 6: her megawatt smile.
- 1:07:25Speaker 3: And I was like, that's it.
- 1:07:26Speaker 2: That's it.
- 1:07:26Speaker 3: That's a megawatt smile. That's a lot.
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: It's a lot of teeth. It's a lot of teeth.
- 1:07:29Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah. Mahogany. Mahogany.
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: We had a moment, so we should watch Mahogany. And
- 1:07:34Speaker 2: now we gotta watch Mahogany.
- 1:07:35Speaker 3: I gotta go review that one again.
- 1:07:37Speaker 2: This was my thing, though. Even if I wasn't upset
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: with her for getting angry at him when the story
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: gets out, which is still a really weird moment.
- 1:07:46Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: But before we get to that, when she... Has gone through,
- 1:07:51Speaker 2: she like out of nowhere kisses him, which is still
- 1:07:54Speaker 2: a really awkward moment. And again, there's no real chemistry there.
- 1:07:58Speaker 2: But okay, we get through this. They start this weird
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: little relationship. They have these touching walks through the park
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: and all of this. And never did we get to
- 1:08:07Speaker 2: a point that she has a boyfriend?
- 1:08:08Speaker 9: No.
- 1:08:09Speaker 2: And then I thought maybe there was a, oh, I
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: thought we were maybe not together. But no, really, she
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: just kind of shut up about it. And she did
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: have a boyfriend the whole time.
- 1:08:18Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:08:19Speaker 2: And that, to me, like, I'm like, how do I
- 1:08:21Speaker 2: like this character now? Like, she blatantly lied to you
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: for days on end, if not weeks. We don't know
- 1:08:26Speaker 2: what this time period is.
- 1:08:27Speaker 3: Because she thought this boyfriend was a narcissistic actor boy
- 1:08:31Speaker 3: who was too.
- 1:08:31Speaker 2: Full of himself. He is. It's Alec Baldwin.
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:08:34Speaker 3: It was great fun. Great fun.
- 1:08:35Speaker 10: But he.
- 1:08:37Speaker 3: But I think I could tell, I could read on
- 1:08:40Speaker 3: her face that she thought that that was almost done.
- 1:08:43Speaker 3: And she's meeting this sweet guy that's outside the narcissistic
- 1:08:48Speaker 3: career that we all have. And she's kind of intrigued
- 1:08:50Speaker 3: by that and kind of thought, well, what's it like
- 1:08:51Speaker 3: to kiss that? I think that's where that came from,
- 1:08:53Speaker 3: is what I'm guessing. And it wasn't so bad.
- 1:08:56Speaker 2: I just wish they told us all of this.
- 1:08:58Speaker 3: I know, I know. But then I think she wanted
- 1:09:00Speaker 3: to just have the fantasy of like leaving all the
- 1:09:04Speaker 3: Hollywood behind and just having this quiet moment in Notting Hill.
- 1:09:07Speaker 3: I think that's what she wanted. And that's why the boyfriend,
- 1:09:09Speaker 3: the big famous boyfriend didn't come up. And then when,
- 1:09:13Speaker 3: so then she was probably going to go, if she
- 1:09:15Speaker 3: had it up to her own schedule, she would probably
- 1:09:17Speaker 3: go home Break it off. Gently break up with him
- 1:09:20Speaker 3: and then find Hugh Grant again at some way. But unfortunately,
- 1:09:23Speaker 3: the boyfriend came and barged into the situation and broke
- 1:09:27Speaker 3: up the fantasy.
- 1:09:28Speaker 2: And is he as charming as Alec Baldwin?
- 1:09:29Speaker 3: Not really.
- 1:09:33Speaker 2: He was kind of leaning into it at that point.
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: He used to be a leading man. He used to
- 1:09:37Speaker 2: be kind of a charming one. But he was already like, no,
- 1:09:40Speaker 2: I got something I can play. Let me dig into
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: this a little bit. Ask this guy to take the
- 1:09:44Speaker 2: trash out.
- 1:09:44Speaker 3: He was good casting.
- 1:09:46Speaker 2: Yeah, he definitely comes through.
- 1:09:48Speaker 10: Okay.
- 1:09:49Speaker 6: And I loved the surprise of Alec Baldwin because I
- 1:09:51Speaker 6: forgot Alec Baldwin was in it. And he's not credited
- 1:09:53Speaker 6: at all. He's not in the beginning credits. He's not
- 1:09:55Speaker 6: in the end credits.
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: He's just not there. Snuck him right in.
- 1:09:57Speaker 3: I didn't notice that.
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: Oh, wow.
- 1:09:59Speaker 6: There's some fun ones. A young Misha Barton. That was
- 1:10:02Speaker 6: a fun one.
- 1:10:03Speaker 3: Where was that?
- 1:10:04Speaker 6: She was the co-star that he has to interview in
- 1:10:08Speaker 6: his capacity as the horse and hound.
- 1:10:10Speaker 3: Oh, is that right?
- 1:10:11Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:10:12Speaker 6: 12-year-old Misha Barton.
- 1:10:13Speaker 3: Is that right? Yeah.
- 1:10:14Speaker 6: And of course, I'm kind of on both of your
- 1:10:16Speaker 6: teams because I did like I wanted them to get together.
- 1:10:20Speaker 6: But there's part of me that didn't want them to
- 1:10:21Speaker 6: get together because there were a lot of red flags
- 1:10:23Speaker 6: coming from Anna. And I really liked him because I
- 1:10:25Speaker 6: like his like perpetual befuddlement. And I just think he's charming.
- 1:10:31Speaker 6: But then there's a moment where Emily Mortimer is there
- 1:10:33Speaker 6: all of a sudden. And it's like, oh, wait, you
- 1:10:35Speaker 6: could date Emily Mortimer. Like, why are we even talking
- 1:10:37Speaker 6: about Julia Roberts? But she's only, you know, she's in
- 1:10:40Speaker 6: it for like a minute.
- 1:10:42Speaker 3: Was she one of the setups for the dates?
- 1:10:45Speaker 6: But she was the perfect one, quote unquote perfect.
- 1:10:47Speaker 2: She was the last one in the little montage.
- 1:10:49Speaker 3: Right, right, right. And it could have worked, but she
- 1:10:52Speaker 3: wasn't Anna Scott. Okay.
- 1:10:54Speaker 9: I hear you.
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: I hear you. Again, at that point, I feel like
- 1:10:58Speaker 2: they had a way better chance than Anna Scott. As
- 1:11:02Speaker 2: it unfolds, I guess we're still supposed to believe that they,
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: you know, are happily ever after. But even that's not
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: normally how these Hollywood things go.
- 1:11:10Speaker 6: She married Danny Motor and they have three children and
- 1:11:13Speaker 6: they've been together for 15 years.
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: Are you sure? Have you checked today's headline?
- 1:11:18Speaker 3: No, I haven't checked today's headline. Oh, Julia?
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:11:20Speaker 3: Well, they're still together, aren't they?
- 1:11:21Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:11:22Speaker 3: She and Danny?
- 1:11:22Speaker 2: I think they are, actually. But I'm thinking of many,
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: many other people that usually it doesn't go. so again
- 1:11:29Speaker 2: we want a nice storybook ending I understand but again
- 1:11:34Speaker 2: I do I think there's so much potential there I
- 1:11:37Speaker 2: think that's why it's more frustrating because it's not that
- 1:11:39Speaker 2: it's a that it is a weird cheesy rom-com kind
- 1:11:43Speaker 2: of thing because I and then I started thinking I
- 1:11:45Speaker 2: was like do I just genuinely dislike that and I'm
- 1:11:48Speaker 2: like no and actually even one with her I think
- 1:11:50Speaker 2: My Best Friend's Wedding is kind of a great example
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: of this and like she's super likable in that like
- 1:11:56Speaker 2: you get all of her charm on that. And even,
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: I mean, I think While You Were Sleeping is a
- 1:12:02Speaker 2: great example of that. So I think there are really
- 1:12:05Speaker 2: good ones out there. This one I'm just so frustrated
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: by because I feel like there is something to be,
- 1:12:10Speaker 2: you really could kind of delve into this, like the
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: fact that she does bring up this, like, what is
- 1:12:17Speaker 2: this price of fame? She's given 10 years of this,
- 1:12:19Speaker 2: you know, her life to this.
- 1:12:21Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: And she does have her sad story of, you know,
- 1:12:24Speaker 2: when everybody else has their boring middle class loser off.
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: They're like, which one of us has the worst life ever?
- 1:12:30Speaker 3: Right, there's one piece of cake left or brownie left
- 1:12:33Speaker 3: and they were all, who's got the saddest story? And
- 1:12:35Speaker 3: everyone's going around the table with these like, you know,
- 1:12:37Speaker 3: I'm in a wheelchair. I suffer depression or whatever it was.
- 1:12:41Speaker 3: And she says, well, I've never, I've been on a
- 1:12:43Speaker 3: diet for 30 years. What else?
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: And you know, And again, I think you could go
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: into that. I think there is a little more to
- 1:12:51Speaker 2: that that we don't get. I think we focus so
- 1:12:54Speaker 2: much on his side of the story and he doesn't
- 1:12:57Speaker 2: really have that interesting life. So we get kind of
- 1:13:00Speaker 2: the boring angle of watching him go to the job
- 1:13:03Speaker 2: that even he seems not very passionate about. And I
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: do like his weird guy that he works with that doesn't, again,
- 1:13:10Speaker 2: someone who doesn't really know who she is.
- 1:13:11Speaker 3: I love that.
- 1:13:12Speaker 2: Misidentifies her as Demi Moore, which that was, again, being
- 1:13:15Speaker 2: a movie geek, I do like that they worked in,
- 1:13:18Speaker 2: he specifically referenced Ghost. The only reason Pretty Woman didn't
- 1:13:22Speaker 2: top that year is because Ghost beat it. Ghost is
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: the one that kept them out of the number one
- 1:13:27Speaker 2: slot for the year.
- 1:13:28Speaker 3: A little insider joke there.
- 1:13:30Speaker 2: To me, again, I was like, they're working in a
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: little Hollywood insider kind of stuff here. But I think
- 1:13:35Speaker 2: there was just so much more they could have done
- 1:13:38Speaker 2: with that. What is that weird price of fame that
- 1:13:42Speaker 2: she played and the other angle of the perverse hero
- 1:13:46Speaker 2: worship that you see all these other people get that
- 1:13:48Speaker 2: i don't know i think there's there's so much that
- 1:13:50Speaker 2: could be done with all that but i i blame
- 1:13:54Speaker 2: the writer.
- 1:13:54Speaker 3: Really you're gonna right you'll blame anybody won't you because
- 1:13:58Speaker 3: you're no no because you have issues.
- 1:14:00Speaker 2: On many on again in many other movies that is
- 1:14:04Speaker 2: not the case i think i'm usually defending a lot
- 1:14:06Speaker 2: of movies on this show this is just one that
- 1:14:11Speaker 2: I had issues with. No, it's all right.
- 1:14:14Speaker 3: You're welcome to have them.
- 1:14:16Speaker 2: So, I don't know. We get our mad dash to
- 1:14:19Speaker 2: the airport, although it's not the airport this time. It's
- 1:14:24Speaker 2: a weird press conference. But it's very super cliche, rush
- 1:14:27Speaker 2: to the airport kind of a thing.
- 1:14:28Speaker 3: She's going to a press conference that announces she'll be
- 1:14:30Speaker 3: leaving the country and never coming back.
- 1:14:32Speaker 2: That's another one of those that I'm like, okay, for
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: something that's trying to tap into real Hollywood stuff, what
- 1:14:36Speaker 2: is this press conference? Have you ever seen... You've been
- 1:14:40Speaker 2: to Academy Award press conferences. Has any been for a
- 1:14:44Speaker 2: random lady that was in a town to shoot a
- 1:14:47Speaker 2: movie and is now leaving tomorrow?
- 1:14:49Speaker 3: I think it's probably because she was announcing that she
- 1:14:51Speaker 3: was going to be taking a sabbatical from the business.
- 1:14:54Speaker 3: That was a lot of reporters. That's all I got
- 1:14:57Speaker 3: to say. It was.
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: It was.
- 1:14:58Speaker 3: It was a huge press conference.
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: It was.
- 1:15:00Speaker 2: No kidding.
- 1:15:02Speaker 3: But if she wanted to announce to the world that
- 1:15:03Speaker 3: she was going to take some time off, At her level,
- 1:15:06Speaker 3: that would be a big deal. That's a news story.
- 1:15:08Speaker 2: She kind of did that right before that. I think
- 1:15:12Speaker 2: she had that like two years where she really wasn't
- 1:15:14Speaker 2: putting stuff out, like that weird hook thing. dip in
- 1:15:18Speaker 2: her career before she came back with i think this
- 1:15:21Speaker 2: and aaron brockovich were like the next things that kind
- 1:15:23Speaker 2: of like but she kind of went through that where
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: she did non-stop stuff disappeared for about a year and
- 1:15:27Speaker 2: then yeah for a good year or two like she
- 1:15:29Speaker 2: didn't put anything else out and i think that that
- 1:15:31Speaker 2: again there's there's there is some reality behind all this stuff.
- 1:15:35Speaker 3: Funny little trivia bit when she did hook right she
- 1:15:38Speaker 3: was a tinkerbell um i was a background pirate in
- 1:15:44Speaker 3: pirate town And I got an upgrade because I could
- 1:15:48Speaker 3: put my legs behind my head. Just like any job,
- 1:15:51Speaker 3: by the way. That'll get you an upgrade in most
- 1:15:54Speaker 3: lines of work.
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: That's what you look for in a pirate.
- 1:15:57Speaker 3: It depends on what you're doing. So I was able
- 1:15:59Speaker 3: to do like that. I got paid as a little
- 1:16:01Speaker 3: stunt upgrade one day to do my twisty bits on camera.
- 1:16:04Speaker 2: Where are you hanging out with Glenn Close?
- 1:16:07Speaker 3: No, I didn't. In fact, the day.
- 1:16:08Speaker 2: There's the super secret cameo.
- 1:16:10Speaker 4: In that movie.
- 1:16:10Speaker 3: That was just a great one. Yeah, the day Glenn
- 1:16:12Speaker 3: Close was doing her male pirate cameo.
- 1:16:15Speaker 2: Years before she would get nominated for an Oscar. Right, right.
- 1:16:18Speaker 3: I had no idea. Right, exactly. What was that movie called?
- 1:16:21Speaker 2: What is that character's name?
- 1:16:22Speaker 3: Somebody's name.
- 1:16:23Speaker 2: Some guy's name.
- 1:16:25Speaker 3: Was it set in Great Britain?
- 1:16:27Speaker 7: Yes.
- 1:16:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: Anyway.
- 1:16:31Speaker 3: So, no, I wasn't... But I didn't actually meet Glenn personally.
- 1:16:35Speaker 2: Or Julia?
- 1:16:36Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:16:36Speaker 3: I did. Well, okay, Julia, she was about to get
- 1:16:41Speaker 3: married to Kiefer Sutherland, if you remember. That was during
- 1:16:44Speaker 3: the filming of Hook. She was supposed to get married
- 1:16:47Speaker 3: and then go off and have a honeymoon in Ireland
- 1:16:49Speaker 3: and then come back and continue filming. Well, she went
- 1:16:52Speaker 3: to Ireland and did the honeymoon by herself because she
- 1:16:55Speaker 3: ditched him at the altar, I think, if I'm not crazy.
- 1:16:57Speaker 3: I remember how this story went down.
- 1:16:58Speaker 2: I think Kiefer had some issues himself at that point.
- 1:17:01Speaker 3: Yeah, okay.
- 1:17:01Speaker 2: And now maybe he's come around. I don't know. I
- 1:17:04Speaker 2: think there were some demons there for him, too.
- 1:17:07Speaker 3: 1991, that was.
- 1:17:08Speaker 2: Yeah, it was a long time ago.
- 1:17:09Speaker 3: But the day that she came back onto the set
- 1:17:11Speaker 3: after returning from this big press hoopla of this not
- 1:17:17Speaker 3: getting married after all, She came back, and I saw
- 1:17:20Speaker 3: her about to go up onto the ship and talk
- 1:17:22Speaker 3: to Steven Spielberg. And so she was taking a deep
- 1:17:25Speaker 3: breath like that at the bottom of the gangplank. Is
- 1:17:30Speaker 3: that what you call it? To walk up to the ship.
- 1:17:33Speaker 3: And so I was standing right in front of her. Yeah,
- 1:17:35Speaker 3: I had to get out of her way so she
- 1:17:36Speaker 3: could make her way onto the ship.
- 1:17:37Speaker 2: And you pushed her into the ocean.
- 1:17:39Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:17:39Speaker 3: Oh, funny Julia Roberts story, though. Pushed her into the ocean.
- 1:17:43Speaker 3: But here's my funny Julia Roberts story that not many
- 1:17:46Speaker 3: people know. She and I have a mutual friend named
- 1:17:49Speaker 3: Jillian Bennett who was a stand-up comedian. And Julia Roberts
- 1:17:52Speaker 3: and Jillian Bennett knew each other in New York City
- 1:17:54Speaker 3: back in the day before she was Julia Roberts. So
- 1:17:59Speaker 3: this is even before Mystic Pizza. This is before all that.
- 1:18:01Speaker 3: It was just Eric's little sister.
- 1:18:04Speaker 6: Before Satisfaction.
- 1:18:06Speaker 2: See, now why weren't we talking about Satisfaction? There's one
- 1:18:08Speaker 2: I can get behind.
- 1:18:09Speaker 3: So I think she had just filmed. She had done Satisfaction.
- 1:18:13Speaker 3: I think Mystic Pizza had now been filmed, but it
- 1:18:15Speaker 3: wasn't out yet. So I'm at a birthday party. Jillian Bennett,
- 1:18:19Speaker 3: my friend Jillian, she lived in a house with roommates.
- 1:18:22Speaker 3: One of the roommates was having his 21st birthday. So, Doug,
- 1:18:26Speaker 3: can you come over and do something funny for his
- 1:18:28Speaker 3: 21st birthday? And then my friend Jillian Bennett, she said, oh, oh,
- 1:18:34Speaker 3: can you do like a striptease or something? I'm like,
- 1:18:36Speaker 3: oh no, this is.
- 1:18:37Speaker 2: Can you put your legs behind your head?
- 1:18:39Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. While stripping. That's, I mean,
- 1:18:41Speaker 3: really what we're looking for. So I thought, oh geez,
- 1:18:43Speaker 3: I've been faced with a challenge. I have to do
- 1:18:45Speaker 3: this now, right? Now I just say no. But back then...
- 1:18:49Speaker 3: I needed people to like me. So I said, oh, gosh, sure,
- 1:18:55Speaker 3: I'll come up with an act. So I did. Child,
- 1:18:58Speaker 3: I came into this birthday party at this house with
- 1:19:01Speaker 3: a boom box, right, with some disco music on it.
- 1:19:06Speaker 3: And I was wearing a cowboy hat and boots and
- 1:19:09Speaker 3: And a cowboy jean shirt.
- 1:19:10Speaker 2: I think this is how you travel everywhere.
- 1:19:12Speaker 3: Don't lie. So I came in like, hey, I heard
- 1:19:15Speaker 3: there's a birthday boy in here. So I put on
- 1:19:17Speaker 3: this grinding music, and I start stripping, and I end
- 1:19:21Speaker 3: up turning from cowboy into a geek. I end up
- 1:19:24Speaker 3: putting on glasses, and I ended up with nothing but
- 1:19:28Speaker 3: boxer shorts on. Anyway, it brought the house down. And
- 1:19:34Speaker 3: it turns out that Eric Roberts' little sister was there.
- 1:19:36Speaker 3: That's how I was introduced to her. Like, oh, that's
- 1:19:38Speaker 3: Eric Roberts' little sister. And I guess her name's Julia.
- 1:19:42Speaker 3: So I'm thinking, oh, my gosh, I'm so embarrassed that
- 1:19:44Speaker 3: she just saw me do that. So the roommates introduced me. Doug,
- 1:19:49Speaker 3: this is Julia. And she was just like, hi. She
- 1:19:52Speaker 3: kind of gave me a hesitant sort of a handshake, like,
- 1:19:55Speaker 3: do I do that?
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: Hello, Doug.
- 1:19:57Speaker 3: She was just getting over spinal meningitis, so she wasn't well.
- 1:20:01Speaker 3: I'll give her that.
- 1:20:03Speaker 2: Otherwise, she would have fallen under your charms, obviously.
- 1:20:06Speaker 3: As people do when I'm taking my clothes off. So then, okay,
- 1:20:11Speaker 3: but Julia didn't know that I was a friend of
- 1:20:14Speaker 3: the household.
- 1:20:15Speaker 2: Like you just showed up like that.
- 1:20:17Speaker 3: So I'm staying. Now, I've changed back into my regular
- 1:20:20Speaker 3: street clothes. I'm at the snack table. I'm having a
- 1:20:23Speaker 3: carrot dipped in some ranch dip, right? Julia says to
- 1:20:27Speaker 3: my friend Jillian, why is the stripper still here?
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: What?
- 1:20:31Speaker 12: Right?
- 1:20:31Speaker 2: You never asked that question.
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: Oh, my gosh.
- 1:20:34Speaker 2: Just get out some more ones.
- 1:20:35Speaker 3: What are you talking about?
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: I just want to know how this isn't on YouTube.
- 1:20:39Speaker 2: Well, he's going to recreate it here for us to know.
- 1:20:43Speaker 12: Right.
- 1:20:43Speaker 3: That was way back in, like, 1980-something.
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: There was a time before YouTube?
- 1:20:47Speaker 10: Yes, yes.
- 1:20:48Speaker 2: Everyone didn't have a camera on them at all times?
- 1:20:50Speaker 3: So thank heaven, because that would be out there now.
- 1:20:53Speaker 3: So Hook came after that. So when I saw her
- 1:20:59Speaker 3: standing there, that would have been my perfect opportunity to say, Julia, hi,
- 1:21:03Speaker 3: we met before I was stripping at your friend's party.
- 1:21:06Speaker 2: Remember?
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: No?
- 1:21:06Speaker 3: So I decided to let that moment pass. I did,
- 1:21:13Speaker 3: because I thought she doesn't need that after coming back
- 1:21:15Speaker 3: from a honeymoon she didn't have. Right? It's not what
- 1:21:19Speaker 3: she needs today.
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: Or it could have been exactly what she needs.
- 1:21:22Speaker 3: Right, or it might have been exactly right.
- 1:21:24Speaker 2: Then she'd be like, well, I'm single now. Hey, underwear guy,
- 1:21:28Speaker 2: come over here a minute. I see where this is
- 1:21:31Speaker 2: really going.
- 1:21:32Speaker 3: See, but I was already married to Mrs. Laurie then. Oh,
- 1:21:34Speaker 3: I know.
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: Fine.
- 1:21:35Speaker 3: Monogamy.
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: Whatever.
- 1:21:39Speaker 2: That's not how this movie goes. Just because you're with
- 1:21:42Speaker 2: somebody doesn't mean you don't go randomly kissing people that
- 1:21:45Speaker 2: you like.
- 1:21:46Speaker 3: But she and Alec Baldwin were not married. They were
- 1:21:48Speaker 3: just like boyfriend, girlfriend.
- 1:21:50Speaker 2: To me, that's a commitment.
- 1:21:52Speaker 3: Yeah, it depends. I don't know.
- 1:21:53Speaker 2: I don't know. Now, you brought up back in the
- 1:21:56Speaker 2: day when there were no cameras. That is one of
- 1:21:58Speaker 2: the things I think is, once again, it's scary how...
- 1:22:02Speaker 2: massively things have changed since 99 when the photos of
- 1:22:07Speaker 2: her come out and it is like rocks her world.
- 1:22:10Speaker 2: Like it is career ending because it's the cover of
- 1:22:13Speaker 2: every paper. And I'm like, look at what happens on
- 1:22:17Speaker 2: a yearly basis. There's a new crop of photos that
- 1:22:21Speaker 2: come out of poor actresses that have put stuff on
- 1:22:23Speaker 2: their phone. And now everyone in the free world has
- 1:22:26Speaker 2: a version of it.
- 1:22:27Speaker 3: And now it's the papers and Twitter and Instagram.
- 1:22:30Speaker 2: And to the point that people don't even acknowledge it anymore.
- 1:22:33Speaker 2: Like it's so constant that that stuff happens that like,
- 1:22:36Speaker 2: it's not even a news story now. Like the first
- 1:22:39Speaker 2: time it kind of was. Two, three times later when
- 1:22:41Speaker 2: it kept happening, they're just like, eh, whatever.
- 1:22:43Speaker 3: Not quite as scandalous anymore.
- 1:22:44Speaker 2: Yeah. Again, it's almost a quaint little world we used
- 1:22:47Speaker 2: to live in back in 1999. I know. When, yeah,
- 1:22:50Speaker 2: people would be upset by scantily gladiator operatives on the
- 1:22:54Speaker 2: cover of every paper.
- 1:22:56Speaker 3: Of all the papers.
- 1:22:57Speaker 2: Of all the papers.
- 1:22:58Speaker 3: What are these papers you all keep speaking of?
- 1:23:00Speaker 2: That's going to be in the papers tomorrow. It's really
- 1:23:02Speaker 2: thin trees.
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: I don't understand this concept of papers. I don't know
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: what you're talking about.
- 1:23:06Speaker 2: You can't see me moving my arm at home, but
- 1:23:08Speaker 2: I'm pressing... individual copies right now so yeah it's ask
- 1:23:12Speaker 2: your grandparents kids it's it's a scary.
- 1:23:15Speaker 3: Don't know what a newspaper is so yeah i.
- 1:23:18Speaker 2: Think those those moments were kind of way more interesting
- 1:23:20Speaker 2: of like just how disturbingly things have changed just since 1999.
- 1:23:25Speaker 4: I know.
- 1:23:28Speaker 2: So i what a world what a world i probably
- 1:23:31Speaker 2: do actually but Again, plot holes. Why does the restaurant
- 1:23:36Speaker 2: not come up again for, like, 90 minutes? Like, he
- 1:23:40Speaker 2: mentions it at the very beginning about his friend owning
- 1:23:43Speaker 2: a restaurant.
- 1:23:44Speaker 3: Oh.
- 1:23:44Speaker 2: And then, like, it comes back at the end. I'm like,
- 1:23:46Speaker 2: was there, like, pages cut out of the screenplay?
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: I can actually tell you why.
- 1:23:50Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:23:50Speaker 6: Because I did read the Wikipedia trivia.
- 1:23:52Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:23:53Speaker 6: And apparently the first cut of this film was 3.5 hours.
- 1:23:55Speaker 3: Whew.
- 1:23:57Speaker 2: I know. Man, I'm glad they cut that. I love
- 1:24:00Speaker 2: that version. I love that movie. They'll just bring it
- 1:24:03Speaker 2: directly to you. It's the Doug exclusive version.
- 1:24:05Speaker 6: Yes, yes.
- 1:24:05Speaker 2: You're the only one asking for it.
- 1:24:06Speaker 3: Dougie's cut.
- 1:24:08Speaker 10: Yes.
- 1:24:08Speaker 6: And part of what was also cut out, I guess,
- 1:24:10Speaker 6: was when they're on the rooftop. I guess she starts
- 1:24:12Speaker 6: swearing like a sailor and they had to pull that
- 1:24:15Speaker 6: back to get the PG-13.
- 1:24:15Speaker 2: Yeah. Will you skate by on that 13? Yeah.
- 1:24:18Speaker 3: Oh, okay.
- 1:24:19Speaker 2: Well, that was the other thing that I thought, like
- 1:24:21Speaker 2: the whole... again we have the very silly roommate character
- 1:24:26Speaker 2: that he hangs out which i loved his character eventually
- 1:24:28Speaker 2: he comes around but in that same thing with his
- 1:24:30Speaker 2: very silly sister and like all of a sudden they're
- 1:24:33Speaker 2: together and i'm like did we miss some cuts here
- 1:24:35Speaker 2: because they were like at some point they were never
- 1:24:38Speaker 2: even in the same scene together at one point they
- 1:24:41Speaker 2: run into the store at the same time and i'm
- 1:24:43Speaker 2: like okay i guess she's dating him now because we
- 1:24:45Speaker 2: saw her break up with that guy in the little
- 1:24:47Speaker 2: city time moving montage and then like suddenly they're getting
- 1:24:50Speaker 2: married i was just like whoa like yeah she.
- 1:24:53Speaker 3: Wants to end up that's right that's right she wants
- 1:24:55Speaker 3: to end up with with the welshman the the room
- 1:24:58Speaker 3: the roommate and that.
- 1:24:58Speaker 2: Would have been a nice reveal that's kind of an
- 1:25:00Speaker 2: interesting moment but i'm like.
- 1:25:02Speaker 3: We had to back it up yeah yeah so well
- 1:25:05Speaker 3: now that we know it was a three and a
- 1:25:06Speaker 3: half hour movie wow this is all they had to
- 1:25:08Speaker 3: cut something out right.
- 1:25:10Speaker 6: Because it's over two hours as it is.
- 1:25:12Speaker 2: It's likely over two.
- 1:25:13Speaker 3: Oh, see. But I love that. And when we talked
- 1:25:15Speaker 3: about Meet Joe Black, that's a three-hour movie. See, okay.
- 1:25:18Speaker 3: That's a lengthy one.
- 1:25:20Speaker 2: That's so weird, I give it points.
- 1:25:21Speaker 3: If you're singing to me, I don't care how long
- 1:25:23Speaker 3: it is. Okay? Okay?
- 1:25:26Speaker 4: And this movie sang to me.
- 1:25:28Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:25:29Speaker 2: I've made many horrible points about it. So what are
- 1:25:31Speaker 2: your favorite moments? You've done a few of them, but
- 1:25:34Speaker 2: defend it as best you can.
- 1:25:35Speaker 3: No, no. I've touched on them all.
- 1:25:38Speaker 2: Tell us why you love it.
- 1:25:41Speaker 3: I love the difference between everyday life that happens that
- 1:25:47Speaker 3: most audiences can relate to and this movie star lifestyle.
- 1:25:50Speaker 3: And when those two worlds collide, how do you work
- 1:25:53Speaker 3: that out? How do you build relations? And the hard
- 1:25:56Speaker 3: part is, see... My best friends in the world that
- 1:25:58Speaker 3: I have now are people that I've known for 30 years, right?
- 1:26:02Speaker 3: Because I know why they're with me. People I meet today,
- 1:26:06Speaker 3: there's oftentimes an angle with wanting to get to know me.
- 1:26:09Speaker 3: It's like, you know, can you get this script to
- 1:26:11Speaker 3: Guillermo del Toro for me? Right? That happens a lot.
- 1:26:13Speaker 4: I'm sorry.
- 1:26:14Speaker 3: Yeah, I know.
- 1:26:16Speaker 2: I've been working really hard on that script.
- 1:26:18Speaker 3: Right. Or someone will, you know, befriend me on social
- 1:26:23Speaker 3: media and be really nice and chatty back and forth
- 1:26:26Speaker 3: and then all of a sudden it's like So, yeah,
- 1:26:28Speaker 3: I sure would like to be an actor one day.
- 1:26:31Speaker 3: Can you make a call for me? No, I'm an
- 1:26:33Speaker 3: actor for hire myself. I can't. And so ulterior motives
- 1:26:37Speaker 3: come out. And so it's nice to see an on-screen
- 1:26:41Speaker 3: relationship where two people from those two different worlds are
- 1:26:45Speaker 3: getting together without ulterior motive, without someone wanting something from
- 1:26:48Speaker 3: the other that way. So that's all. That's all I'm saying.
- 1:26:52Speaker 2: Again, I do like that angle of Hugh Grant. He
- 1:26:55Speaker 2: is never in it for the wrong reasons. Never. He
- 1:26:59Speaker 2: makes what he eventually decides is a bad call midway in,
- 1:27:03Speaker 2: but again, I almost stand with him on that one.
- 1:27:05Speaker 2: When he's kind of like, can I just say no
- 1:27:08Speaker 2: to your offer?
- 1:27:09Speaker 3: Oh yeah, when she comes back and says that lovely speech.
- 1:27:13Speaker 2: Yeah, the big speech, and I'm a beautiful woman, and
- 1:27:16Speaker 2: I want to start a relationship with you.
- 1:27:18Speaker 3: And he's just like, But he had been dissed twice
- 1:27:22Speaker 3: by then. And so he's thinking, I don't want to
- 1:27:23Speaker 3: get dissed again.
- 1:27:24Speaker 2: That was one of the moments when I was like, okay,
- 1:27:26Speaker 2: now I'm on board.
- 1:27:27Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:27:28Speaker 2: Way to do it a little unconventional and then it
- 1:27:30Speaker 2: gets super conventional. Yeah. What are you going to do?
- 1:27:35Speaker 3: What are you going to do?
- 1:27:36Speaker 8: I know.
- 1:27:37Speaker 12: I know.
- 1:27:39Speaker 3: Now, Hugh Grant's roommate, do we know what that actor's
- 1:27:42Speaker 3: name was?
- 1:27:42Speaker 6: I never know how to pronounce it. I call him
- 1:27:44Speaker 6: Rhys Afons. I don't know if that's how you say it.
- 1:27:46Speaker 6: It's R-Y-R-H-Y-S-I-F-A-N-S.
- 1:27:50Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:27:50Speaker 6: I'm not good.
- 1:27:51Speaker 7: With my Welsh.
- 1:27:52Speaker 3: Rhys Afons.
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:27:53Speaker 3: Let's call him that.
- 1:27:53Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:27:55Speaker 6: Don't call him that in person.
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: No, no, no.
- 1:27:56Speaker 2: I can't. Lucy says it's Rhys Afons. Rhys Afons.
- 1:27:59Speaker 3: Let's get him on the phone right now. I'll listen
- 1:28:02Speaker 3: to someone else say hi to him, and then I'll
- 1:28:04Speaker 3: follow suit. But early in the movie, to establish the
- 1:28:10Speaker 3: character and the relationship between the roommates, when Reese is
- 1:28:16Speaker 3: asking Hugh Grant's opinion on what T-shirt should I wear
- 1:28:19Speaker 3: for tonight's date that he has, and I got a date,
- 1:28:22Speaker 3: so I got the right T-shirt. So he parades these
- 1:28:24Speaker 3: different T-shirts with different things written on them. I got
- 1:28:27Speaker 3: a big guffaw laugh out of me. The last one
- 1:28:30Speaker 3: said– on the front it said.
- 1:28:32Speaker 6: Something about how beautiful you are.
- 1:28:34Speaker 2: You are so beautiful.
- 1:28:34Speaker 3: You're so beautiful.
- 1:28:35Speaker 6: You're the most beautiful girl in the world.
- 1:28:36Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah. And Hugh Grant looks at it and says, well,
- 1:28:39Speaker 3: that's the shirt. Oh, great. He turns around on the
- 1:28:41Speaker 3: back and says, fancy a fur? Right? So... So it's like, oh,
- 1:28:45Speaker 3: dear sakes, and he's walking away like, oh, no, that's
- 1:28:47Speaker 3: the shirt he's going to wear, and I can't stop him.
- 1:28:50Speaker 2: That was one of the first scenes, and that was
- 1:28:52Speaker 2: promising because that I felt very connected to because if
- 1:28:55Speaker 2: I'm having a very fancy outing, I will pick my
- 1:28:58Speaker 2: best T-shirt, and I will have to, as Misty, you know,
- 1:29:02Speaker 2: we have the same T-shirts half the time. I have
- 1:29:04Speaker 2: to decide. What is the most appropriate t-shirt should I wear?
- 1:29:09Speaker 2: You know, am I wearing an alien t-shirt today? What's
- 1:29:12Speaker 2: going to send out the right message? Do I need
- 1:29:14Speaker 2: it to be?
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: This is a family-friendly event.
- 1:29:15Speaker 2: Yeah, do I need to wear my Coco t-shirt? Like,
- 1:29:17Speaker 2: I have that.
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: And I have pro-fanity involved because I have several of those.
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: And I'm like, ah, no.
- 1:29:22Speaker 3: I'm from a different world because I pick out my tie.
- 1:29:24Speaker 3: You're picking out your best t-shirt.
- 1:29:26Speaker 2: You're very well dressed. But again, to me, I fell
- 1:29:29Speaker 2: in line with the weirdo roommate. So I was just like,
- 1:29:31Speaker 2: this moment seems genuine. I would get somebody's opinion on
- 1:29:35Speaker 2: which is the best t-shirt I should wear on my
- 1:29:37Speaker 2: big fancy date for this evening. So yeah, that's pretty
- 1:29:41Speaker 2: accurate for me. So that part I like.
- 1:29:43Speaker 3: Bless your little heart.
- 1:29:45Speaker 4: Precious.
- 1:29:45Speaker 2: From that point, I veer quite far away from that roommate.
- 1:29:49Speaker 2: He's not a fun character. I mean, he's funny, but
- 1:29:52Speaker 2: I don't want to room with him.
- 1:29:53Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: From the trailer that I watched, he did seem like
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: the best part.
- 1:29:57Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, right. But you like ridiculous things.
- 1:30:01Speaker 3: I do kind of.
- 1:30:02Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:30:02Speaker 3: And he was kind of like unshowered and unkempt and
- 1:30:06Speaker 3: an embarrassment. I was also.
- 1:30:10Speaker 2: And like you, Lex parading around in his underwear in
- 1:30:13Speaker 2: front of an entire group of photographers.
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: No shame.
- 1:30:17Speaker 6: And how did that not become a huge story that
- 1:30:19Speaker 6: she was there.
- 1:30:19Speaker 2: With two guys? I said that too. And how did
- 1:30:22Speaker 2: they specifically connect it to the one that was dressed
- 1:30:25Speaker 2: that came out? You saw the guy, right? Maybe he's
- 1:30:27Speaker 2: their butler. Why did you jump to the conclusion that
- 1:30:31Speaker 2: it was the first guy that came out, not the
- 1:30:33Speaker 2: one that came out in his underwear?
- 1:30:35Speaker 3: And posed with his arms in the air.
- 1:30:36Speaker 2: And posed with everyone.
- 1:30:37Speaker 3: I loved it. I loved it. Oh.
- 1:30:41Speaker 2: Oh, so have we addressed all the finer points on this?
- 1:30:45Speaker 2: I've hit as many.
- 1:30:46Speaker 3: They may not need a whole lot more to address.
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: The finer, the lower.
- 1:30:52Speaker 2: I've made my statement as best I can. But there
- 1:30:54Speaker 2: are very good moments in there mixed in. And I
- 1:30:57Speaker 2: think an interesting story that's maybe still waiting to be.
- 1:31:00Speaker 6: Told yeah or maybe it's out there we just need
- 1:31:02Speaker 6: to review the director's cut.
- 1:31:03Speaker 3: Next time right the three and a half hour version
- 1:31:05Speaker 3: it's been long.
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: Enough why have they not remade this yet.
- 1:31:09Speaker 2: A remake of not we've already seen them do it
- 1:31:11Speaker 2: from with mahogany so now it's like when's the new
- 1:31:13Speaker 2: reboot version so wait did they do a remake of
- 1:31:16Speaker 2: mahogany oh no.
- 1:31:20Speaker 3: It's been borrowed from so okay right right what do
- 1:31:22Speaker 3: you i don't know i don't know i don't know
- 1:31:25Speaker 3: chum All right.
- 1:31:26Speaker 2: Then I guess we're done with that.
- 1:31:28Speaker 4: With that.
- 1:31:29Speaker 2: I mean, to round things out, I mean, as just
- 1:31:34Speaker 2: an important award show as the Oscars, we were sitting
- 1:31:37Speaker 2: there handing out the Foilers last weekend. The Foilers. The
- 1:31:40Speaker 2: Foilers are our own awards. Instead of being fancy and gold,
- 1:31:45Speaker 2: it's made out of aluminum foil. Foil. Because that seems about.
- 1:31:48Speaker 3: It fits the budget better.
- 1:31:50Speaker 2: That's how it seems like a fitting tribute to our show. Sure.
- 1:31:53Speaker 2: And we serve a lot of pork so you can
- 1:31:55Speaker 2: take leftovers. It's dual duty. You can use your award
- 1:31:58Speaker 2: to make use of it.
- 1:31:59Speaker 3: Grab the pork, make it into a duck, whatever.
- 1:32:02Speaker 2: So we have a best monster category. And I'm obviously
- 1:32:06Speaker 2: pulling for you. But I got to be fair. There's
- 1:32:10Speaker 2: a lot of votes coming in for other. I won't
- 1:32:12Speaker 2: say which Skarsgård character this was. But there was a
- 1:32:15Speaker 2: lot of Pennywise coming in.
- 1:32:17Speaker 3: Of course there would be.
- 1:32:18Speaker 2: So it did make me want to say, what is
- 1:32:20Speaker 2: the situation when you are kind of a top-tier monster man?
- 1:32:25Speaker 2: I mean, how cutthroat is that into the business there?
- 1:32:29Speaker 3: No, it's not.
- 1:32:30Speaker 2: You are okay with other people taking a... I mean,
- 1:32:32Speaker 2: Pennywise is a pretty high-end role.
- 1:32:35Speaker 3: And that's a great character to take it, run with it, yeah.
- 1:32:38Speaker 2: Could you have done something interesting with it? You've been
- 1:32:40Speaker 2: a clown before somewhere. You were a juggling clown, were
- 1:32:43Speaker 2: you not?
- 1:32:44Speaker 3: That was Batman Returns. I was thin clown.
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: That's the most amazing thing I've ever.
- 1:32:50Speaker 2: Juggling?
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: Juggling is my favorite thing.
- 1:32:51Speaker 2: Okay, wait.
- 1:32:52Speaker 3: But I didn't juggle in the movie.
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: You mentioned juggling and it threw me off.
- 1:32:57Speaker 2: You got all excited.
- 1:32:58Speaker 3: If you give me three oranges, I can't do it. Yeah, sorry.
- 1:33:01Speaker 2: That's as bad as I am. I can't juggle either.
- 1:33:03Speaker 3: Don't let me down.
- 1:33:06Speaker 2: So, I mean, are you okay with that stuff when
- 1:33:08Speaker 2: you see, like, are you driven so much of your
- 1:33:12Speaker 2: own goals that you're, like, gunning for, you know, you
- 1:33:14Speaker 2: see a new property coming up, like, Nosferatu's getting remade.
- 1:33:19Speaker 2: How do I get myself in that role? I mean,
- 1:33:22Speaker 2: are you that specific about the kind of stuff that
- 1:33:24Speaker 2: you're drawn to?
- 1:33:25Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah. The thing is, I'm 57 now, you know,
- 1:33:31Speaker 3: and I've been acting for 31.
- 1:33:32Speaker 2: I'm not buying it. You guys at home can't see, perhaps.
- 1:33:35Speaker 2: He's upwards of 29.
- 1:33:37Speaker 3: You bless your soul. But having been an actor for
- 1:33:40Speaker 3: 31 years now, I feel like I've done every creature
- 1:33:42Speaker 3: I want to do. The one that was remaining for
- 1:33:44Speaker 3: me was Count Orlok and Nosferatu. And I got to
- 1:33:47Speaker 3: play him. We did an indie version of that. It's
- 1:33:50Speaker 3: public domain, so anybody can make one. So there was
- 1:33:53Speaker 3: one Nosferatu that was announced in the trades that was
- 1:33:56Speaker 3: not ours. Ours is done. It's in the can now,
- 1:33:59Speaker 3: and it should be coming out later in this year, 2018.
- 1:34:01Speaker 2: I've seen some photos. There's a guy in makeup. He
- 1:34:04Speaker 2: looks pretty good.
- 1:34:04Speaker 10: That's right.
- 1:34:04Speaker 2: And he looks good.
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: It's a great, yes.
- 1:34:07Speaker 3: And our Nosferatu is going to combine old movie and
- 1:34:09Speaker 3: new movie together. So there's a green screen shot element
- 1:34:12Speaker 3: to every shot of our movie, and that green screen
- 1:34:15Speaker 3: is going to be filled in with bits from the
- 1:34:18Speaker 3: old movie from 1922.
- 1:34:19Speaker 2: Excellent.
- 1:34:20Speaker 3: Yes. So I got to play in the environment of
- 1:34:23Speaker 3: the old movie that Max Schreck got to play in.
- 1:34:26Speaker 3: So I'm very tickled about that. And that was the
- 1:34:28Speaker 3: last creature makeup role that I really had on my
- 1:34:30Speaker 3: bucket list. And now I'm leaning more toward the rom-com.
- 1:34:34Speaker 3: That's why it's not a deal.
- 1:34:36Speaker 1: Are there any rom-coms in the works?
- 1:34:38Speaker 2: I want to do a rom-com. Let's get Julie on
- 1:34:40Speaker 2: the phone right now. Come on. Let's put this together.
- 1:34:42Speaker 3: I did a lovely little indie film a few years
- 1:34:44Speaker 3: ago called My Name is Jerry. It's a middle-aged white
- 1:34:47Speaker 3: guy coming to his midlife crisis. It's a coming-of-middle-age story.
- 1:34:52Speaker 2: And I loved it.
- 1:34:54Speaker 3: I was done with makeup in 10 minutes. Did a
- 1:34:56Speaker 3: little fluffing of the hair. Put on a tie. Wear
- 1:34:59Speaker 3: a suit. Carry a briefcase. We're on film.
- 1:35:01Speaker 2: There's not four pounds of latex? What are you talking about?
- 1:35:03Speaker 3: And then I did a Hallmark Channel movie a couple
- 1:35:06Speaker 3: years ago, and that's when we talked last year.
- 1:35:07Speaker 2: I remember, yeah, we were talking. You were the chauffeur.
- 1:35:10Speaker 3: I was a chauffeur slash butler for Raquel Welsh in
- 1:35:13Speaker 3: a movie called The Ultimate Legacy. And for that, I
- 1:35:15Speaker 3: got to wear a three-piece suit, bow tie, watch chain. Again,
- 1:35:19Speaker 3: 10 minutes, a little dusting on the face, a little
- 1:35:21Speaker 3: done in the hair, boom, done. And I loved it.
- 1:35:24Speaker 3: It was a happy story. A pretty little story with
- 1:35:28Speaker 3: a pretty little cast in a pretty little town with
- 1:35:30Speaker 3: a pretty little happy ending.
- 1:35:31Speaker 7: I loved it.
- 1:35:32Speaker 3: I loved it.
- 1:35:33Speaker 2: Are you drawn towards those stories or are you really
- 1:35:35Speaker 2: just sick of the makeup?
- 1:35:36Speaker 3: It might be a combo. I don't know. But I
- 1:35:40Speaker 3: do like happy stories and feel goods. I do. And
- 1:35:44Speaker 3: you don't have to invest too much to watch it.
- 1:35:46Speaker 3: It's like you can keep it on its background noise
- 1:35:48Speaker 3: if you want.
- 1:35:48Speaker 2: So yeah, I like channel a lot i do now
- 1:35:51Speaker 2: that the industry's changed so much that people can get
- 1:35:54Speaker 2: their own stuff going is it something you want to
- 1:35:57Speaker 2: like do your own version of these kind of projects or.
- 1:36:01Speaker 3: I don't know it's too much it would be it'd
- 1:36:02Speaker 3: be nice if someone else would produce and direct and
- 1:36:04Speaker 3: do all that writing and i'll just be an actor
- 1:36:07Speaker 3: for hire still yeah i'm i'm at a point where
- 1:36:10Speaker 3: i don't deal with stress well and so and trying
- 1:36:12Speaker 3: to produce your own movie is very.
- 1:36:14Speaker 2: Stressful oh yeah That's where all the work is that
- 1:36:16Speaker 2: nobody sees. And you really get no reward unless you
- 1:36:20Speaker 2: win the Academy Award. There's no real pats on the
- 1:36:23Speaker 2: back for you. It either then goes to the actor
- 1:36:26Speaker 2: or the director and the producer just get out of
- 1:36:28Speaker 2: the way.
- 1:36:28Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly. So I'm at the point now where like
- 1:36:32Speaker 3: if what's left on my bucket list is to do
- 1:36:34Speaker 3: something for the Hallmark Channel again. I would love to
- 1:36:36Speaker 3: be in a Christmas movie where I get to wear
- 1:36:37Speaker 3: a funny sweater with reindeer on it and swirl a
- 1:36:40Speaker 3: hot chocolate while I give some great advice to my
- 1:36:42Speaker 3: grown daughter. Boom.
- 1:36:44Speaker 1: Right?
- 1:36:45Speaker 4: Do you see it?
- 1:36:45Speaker 2: I think we need to start writing this. I think
- 1:36:48Speaker 2: we can make this happen.
- 1:36:49Speaker 3: And again, that's far outside the genre I've been playing in.
- 1:36:52Speaker 3: I kind of want.
- 1:36:53Speaker 2: An amphibian man doing that. Just swirling his hot chocolate.
- 1:36:57Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:36:59Speaker 2: You don't think Guillermo sounds bored with this?
- 1:37:01Speaker 3: No, you may not. That's not the right story for
- 1:37:03Speaker 3: his fish man.
- 1:37:04Speaker 9: To be in.
- 1:37:04Speaker 2: What if some fingers fall off of somebody else?
- 1:37:06Speaker 3: He might be on board.
- 1:37:08Speaker 2: You're winning him over when you start adding that.
- 1:37:10Speaker 3: Or maybe if I'm a dad in a Christmas sweater
- 1:37:11Speaker 3: with my eyes in the wrong place. Maybe that's, you know.
- 1:37:15Speaker 3: He does like.
- 1:37:17Speaker 2: To design weird shapes onto you.
- 1:37:19Speaker 3: I've got eyeballs in my shoulder blades.
- 1:37:21Speaker 4: Something.
- 1:37:22Speaker 3: They're never where they belong.
- 1:37:23Speaker 2: Doesn't seem out of character for you or Guillermo.
- 1:37:25Speaker 3: I know. Bless his heart.
- 1:37:27Speaker 2: So do you have anything else to tell people that's
- 1:37:30Speaker 2: coming out?
- 1:37:30Speaker 3: What's coming? Anything else to plug? So later in 2018,
- 1:37:33Speaker 3: I'll be looking for Nosferatu. I played the title character,
- 1:37:36Speaker 3: Count Orlok, and I loved it. It's really going to
- 1:37:38Speaker 3: be a beautiful piece of art. Also, The Shape of
- 1:37:41Speaker 3: Water is, by the time this podcast comes out, it
- 1:37:44Speaker 3: will be already on Blu-ray and DVD. It will be
- 1:37:47Speaker 3: released March 13th.
- 1:37:48Speaker 2: And you should all own it because it's amazing. It's gorgeous.
- 1:37:52Speaker 3: And it's also streaming on various video on demands. So
- 1:37:56Speaker 3: then otherwise, I also have another movie I did with
- 1:37:59Speaker 3: Mira Sorvino and her dad, Paul Sorvino, called Beneath the Leaves,
- 1:38:04Speaker 3: in which I play a psycho killer, a human. And
- 1:38:08Speaker 3: Mira Sorvino plays the lead detective trying to hunt me down.
- 1:38:12Speaker 3: So we had great fun with that. And then Star
- 1:38:18Speaker 3: Trek Discovery. I'm about a month away right now from
- 1:38:21Speaker 3: going back to Toronto to film season two. So that's
- 1:38:24Speaker 3: taking up the bulk of my time now as Star
- 1:38:26Speaker 3: Trek Discovery because it's about seven months out of the year.
- 1:38:28Speaker 2: That's a lot.
- 1:38:29Speaker 3: Of press too.
- 1:38:30Speaker 2: I think I've seen you in a lot of magazines
- 1:38:32Speaker 2: just in the makeup there.
- 1:38:33Speaker 3: I'm currently on the cover of Star Trek magazines as Serena.
- 1:38:37Speaker 2: I was still, and I posted on Facebook about it,
- 1:38:39Speaker 2: the fact that you made the cover of Famous Monsters magazine,
- 1:38:43Speaker 2: which is to me, that was October.
- 1:38:46Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:38:46Speaker 2: I mean, for a monster guy like that, you can
- 1:38:49Speaker 2: get no more impressive than being on the cover boy,
- 1:38:52Speaker 2: if you were.
- 1:38:52Speaker 3: No, Famous Monsters magazine, that's a staple from my childhood.
- 1:38:56Speaker 3: And so to be on the cover with artist renderings
- 1:38:58Speaker 3: of three of my different characters was really, really a sweet,
- 1:39:01Speaker 3: sweet treat for me. Yeah.
- 1:39:03Speaker 2: I was impressed with that.
- 1:39:04Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:39:05Speaker 3: All the love, all the love. So, So season one
- 1:39:09Speaker 3: of Star Trek Discovery is available now in its entirety
- 1:39:12Speaker 3: on cbs.com slash all access. You can join if you're
- 1:39:17Speaker 3: not a member and not a subscriber. You can get
- 1:39:19Speaker 3: the seven-day trial membership, binge the whole first season, and

- 1:39:26Speaker 3: Season two should be airing sometime starting in January of
- 1:39:30Speaker 3: 2019 because it's going to take us seven months to
- 1:39:32Speaker 3: film season two. So here you go.
- 1:39:35Speaker 2: Lots more makeup for you.
- 1:39:36Speaker 3: Lots more makeup.
- 1:39:38Speaker 2: It is.
- 1:39:38Speaker 3: I'm back in my alien bits with the contact lenses
- 1:39:40Speaker 3: and funny shoes.
- 1:39:41Speaker 2: That's strange. You've never played an alien before.
- 1:39:44Speaker 3: I've played more aliens than I can count. Are you
- 1:39:46Speaker 3: kidding me?
- 1:39:47Speaker 2: I'm being facetious.
- 1:39:48Speaker 3: I know.
- 1:39:50Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:39:51Speaker 2: So definitely, I guess, follow you on the internets and
- 1:39:53Speaker 2: the Twitters.
- 1:39:54Speaker 3: Yes. If you're on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr, LinkedIn, you
- 1:39:59Speaker 3: can find me as actor Doug Jones.
- 1:40:01Speaker 6: All right.
- 1:40:02Speaker 2: And I guess we do owe a little thanks to
- 1:40:04Speaker 2: the convention that brought us together. So they've had an
- 1:40:08Speaker 2: amazing turnout this year. So definitely go to LexingtonComicCon.com and
- 1:40:13Speaker 2: see what they've got in the works for next time.
- 1:40:14Speaker 3: There you go.
- 1:40:15Speaker 2: Anything else to pass along to people?
- 1:40:18Speaker 3: Be good to each other.
- 1:40:19Speaker 2: Be good to each other.
- 1:40:20Speaker 3: Be nice. It's a mean world out there now, so
- 1:40:22Speaker 3: let's all be nice and hug it out. What do
- 1:40:24Speaker 3: you say?
- 1:40:24Speaker 2: I'm on board with that.
- 1:40:25Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:40:25Speaker 2: That's how we do this. We wrap it up with
- 1:40:28Speaker 2: warm thoughts.
- 1:40:28Speaker 3: With huggles and headpats.
- 1:40:29Speaker 4: That's right.
- 1:40:30Speaker 2: That's what we're going to go do right now.
- 1:40:31Speaker 1: Right now.
- 1:40:32Speaker 2: That's right.
- 1:40:47Speaker 8: I'll watch a rom-com with him now.
- 1:40:49Speaker 2: Will you now? I will. All by yourself? Yeah.
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:40:53Speaker 2: What?
- 1:40:55Speaker 3: Might give me another angle.
- 1:40:56Speaker 8: Hey, I need to watch some stuff like that.
- 1:40:58Speaker 3: Every once in a while.
- 1:40:59Speaker 1: In touch with your sensitive side?
- 1:41:01Speaker 2: I like it because it mixes things up. It does.
- 1:41:03Speaker 8: It mixes things up and it makes you think.
- 1:41:05Speaker 1: Again, I don't like none of that mess.
- 1:41:07Speaker 8: I was kind of upset that I didn't watch it
- 1:41:08Speaker 8: because now I'm like, you know, there's some things that
- 1:41:11Speaker 8: maybe I need to give certain movies a chance.
- 1:41:13Speaker 1: Yeah, I try to. Are we going home and watching
- 1:41:16Speaker 1: this movie?
- 1:41:16Speaker 2: No.
- 1:41:17Speaker 1: That's what I thought.
- 1:41:18Speaker 2: I mean, I usually sit around watching Happy Death Day,
- 1:41:20Speaker 2: so if somebody wants to mix things up and give
- 1:41:23Speaker 2: me a rom-com to watch, that's fine.
- 1:41:24Speaker 8: Or you're usually watching.
- 1:41:27Speaker 8: Forensic files.
- 1:41:30Speaker 3: It did work out just fine.
- 1:41:32Speaker 2: You got all your Chuck Norrises taken care of.
- 1:41:35Speaker 8: Yes, we did.
- 1:41:36Speaker 2: We saw Doug, and so it's all good.
- 1:41:38Speaker 1: Huggles were had.
- 1:41:39Speaker 2: Hugged by Doug Jones. That's all you needed at this convention.
- 1:41:43Speaker 1: You got hugged.
- 1:41:43Speaker 3: Didn't you get a hug? I got a weird forehead.
- 1:41:47Speaker 8: Scratchy thing.
- 1:41:49Speaker 1: And you got a hug when you bought the autograph
- 1:41:51Speaker 1: for your dog.
- 1:41:51Speaker 8: I'm good with that.
- 1:41:52Speaker 2: And there was some face touching. He touched a lot
- 1:41:55Speaker 2: of faces, so I think we're all covered.
- 1:41:57Speaker 1: I just realized how many hands he's probably touched all day.
- 1:42:01Speaker 2: He might have some hand sanitizer. We'll find out. Depending
- 1:42:06Speaker 2: on what sort of disease you get.
- 1:42:08Speaker 1: I imagine some inner cleanliness just keeps him forever sanitary.
- 1:42:13Speaker 2: He's just that good. He's just, his goodness from inside
- 1:42:17Speaker 2: fights off all evil, including germs. He's delightful. So, otherwise
- 1:42:22Speaker 2: that about does it. We will return next time, same
- 1:42:24Speaker 2: geek feed. Thanks for listening.
- 1:42:26Speaker 13: Bye.
- 1:42:27Speaker 11: He may be the face I can't forget. A trace
- 1:42:33Speaker 11: of pleasure or regret.
- 1:42:36Speaker 14: Maybe my treasure or the price I have to pay.
- 1:42:43Speaker 2: She may be.
- 1:42:43Speaker 9: The song that summer sings Maybe the chill that autumn
- 1:42:49Speaker 9: brings Maybe a hundred different things Within the measure of
- 1:42:56Speaker 9: a day.
- 1:43:00Speaker 14: She may be the beauty or the beast May be
- 1:43:05Speaker 14: the famine or the feast May turn each day into heaven.
- 1:43:15Speaker 1: She may be the.
- 1:43:16Speaker 9: Mirror of my dream, a smile reflected in a stream.
- 1:43:23Speaker 2: She may not be what.
- 1:43:24Speaker 9: She may seem, inside her shell.
- 1:43:36Speaker 14: In a crowd whose eyes can be so private and so.
- 1:43:40Speaker 11: Broad No one's allowed to see them when they cry
- 1:43:47Speaker 11: She may be the love that cannot hope to last
- 1:43:53Speaker 11: May come to me from shadows of the past That
- 1:43:56Speaker 11: I remember till the day I die And I'll survive
- 1:44:07Speaker 11: The why and wherefore I'm alive The one I'll care.
- 1:44:12Speaker 7: For through the rough And red.
- 1:44:15Speaker 9: Years Me I'll take her laughter and her tears And
- 1:44:22Speaker 9: make them all.
- 1:44:23Speaker 4: My souvenirs For where.
- 1:44:26Speaker 11: She goes I've got to be The meaning of my.
- 1:44:31Speaker 4: Life is She.
