• 0:06
Speaker 1: thou the Son of Man with a kiss? Luke 22.48
• 0:12
Speaker 1: As I march toward the place of my purpose and destiny,
• 0:18
Speaker 1: and as the pressure of the task before me begins
• 0:21
Speaker 1: to weigh on my heart, I thank you that you
• 0:24
Speaker 1: will place people around me who will pray and who
• 0:28
Speaker 1: will intercede on my behalf. so that I may have
• 0:32
Speaker 1: the strength to finish strong. Increase my faith so that
• 0:38
Speaker 1: I will be able to operate in the fullness of
• 0:41
Speaker 1: who I am. Even when I experience betrayal from friends
• 0:46
Speaker 1: like Judas, I will remain calm, because even though it
• 0:50
Speaker 1: may surprise me, I know it doesn't surprise you, Lord.
• 0:55
Speaker 1: When I'm tempted to lash out and fight back like Peter,
• 1:00
Speaker 1: Restrain me, Holy Spirit, and remind me that your spoken
• 1:04
Speaker 1: word over my life will be fulfilled, no matter who
• 1:09
Speaker 1: turns their back on me. No amount of betrayal will
• 1:13
Speaker 1: ever be able to derail my destiny, because through my
• 1:18
Speaker 1: obedience I am protected and covered. In Jesus' name, amen.
• 1:29
Speaker 1: Thank you for praying with me today. Continue listening for
• 1:33
Speaker 1: an incredible Bible story. Brought to you by BibleInAYear.com.

Speaker 2: The Word will be fulfilled. In our last story, we
• 1:49
Speaker 2: learned about the plot to kill Jesus being set into
• 1:52
Speaker 2: motion by Judas. Jesus, during the Last Supper, identified his
• 1:57
Speaker 2: betrayer as Judas. He washed his disciples' feet, telling them
• 2:01
Speaker 2: to serve one another as he had served them, and
• 2:04
Speaker 2: gave them a new command to remember him when they
• 2:07
Speaker 2: eat together and take communion until he returns. In this story,
• 2:13
Speaker 2: we will learn about the agonizing heart of Jesus, his
• 2:16
Speaker 2: resolve to save us, and his desire to have his
• 2:19
Speaker 2: disciples near him in the last hour. We also see
• 2:23
Speaker 2: Judas again, coming with a small army to arrest Jesus.
• 2:27
Speaker 2: as inspired by the Gospels.
• 2:32
Speaker 3: We're so glad you joined us on the Bible in
• 2:34
Speaker 3: a Year podcast today. The Bible in a Year podcast
• 2:37
Speaker 3: is an outreach of PowerPoint Ministries and can only come
• 2:41
Speaker 3: to you each week through the support of listeners just
• 2:43
Speaker 3: like you. Your support today is so important that we
• 2:47
Speaker 3: want to thank you for your gift by giving you
• 2:49
Speaker 3: a copy of my book called The Jesus Book. It
• 2:52
Speaker 3: is a powerful guide that shows how every book in
• 2:54
Speaker 3: the Bible points to Jesus. and how his living word,
• 2:58
Speaker 3: the truth of God's word, will transform your life. So
• 3:02
Speaker 3: to get a copy of the Jesus book, simply go
• 3:05
Speaker 3: to jackgraham.org slash Jesus. That's jackgraham.org slash Jesus. And thank
• 3:12
Speaker 3: you for your support. In our last time together, we
• 3:16
Speaker 3: heard of the Passover meal in which Jesus washed his disciples' feet,
• 3:20
Speaker 3: giving them and us a model of servanthood. He also
• 3:24
Speaker 3: identified his betrayer, Judas Iscariot, who, filled with Satan, departed
• 3:29
Speaker 3: from the group to do this terrible thing of giving
• 3:33
Speaker 3: Jesus up for sacrifice. Finally, we heard how Jesus gave
• 3:37
Speaker 3: new meaning to the elements of the Passover meal. This
• 3:41
Speaker 3: Passover meal transitions to the Last Supper and the Lord's
• 3:45
Speaker 3: Supper that we practice today as Christians, because the blood
• 3:49
Speaker 3: of Jesus Christ is represented in the fruit of the
• 3:53
Speaker 3: vine in the cup. and the bread represents the body
• 3:56
Speaker 3: of the Lord which was given and is given for us.
• 4:00
Speaker 3: Today we'll find Jesus filled with sorrow going to the
• 4:02
Speaker 3: Father in prayer because he knows his time is nearing,
• 4:06
Speaker 3: and then he submits his will to do the will
• 4:09
Speaker 3: of God. While he desires to be spared from the
• 4:12
Speaker 3: great suffering of taking the sin of the world upon himself,
• 4:16
Speaker 3: he prays not my will, but your will be done.
• 4:20
Speaker 3: The cross of Christ looms large as we begin today's reading.
• 4:24
Speaker 3: So let's listen reverently to the Word of God.
• 4:30
Speaker 2: In the cool of the night, Jesus could hear the
• 4:33
Speaker 2: faint sound of the festival happening in the distance. Quietness
• 4:37
Speaker 2: settled in as the disciples walked further away from the
• 4:40
Speaker 2: city up to the Mount of Olives. Among the trees,
• 4:44
Speaker 2: with his disciples trailing shortly behind him, Jesus spoke, You
• 4:49
Speaker 2: will all run away because of me tonight, for it
• 4:52
Speaker 2: is written, I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep
• 4:56
Speaker 2: of the flock will be scattered. Peter, with the same
• 4:59
Speaker 2: brash and bold tone he often used, said, They may
• 5:03
Speaker 2: all fall away, Lord, but I will not. I would
• 5:06
Speaker 2: die for you. O Peter, if only you knew what
• 5:11
Speaker 2: was going to happen, Jesus must have thought. He answered
• 5:15
Speaker 2: Peter and said, Before the rooster crows tomorrow morning, you
• 5:19
Speaker 2: would have already denied knowing me three times. Peter and
• 5:24
Speaker 2: the others continued to affirm to Jesus that they would
• 5:27
Speaker 2: never do such a thing. Yet Jesus would go through
• 5:31
Speaker 2: what was about to happen alone. He would gladly do
• 5:35
Speaker 2: it too, for the joy set before him, he would
• 5:38
Speaker 2: endure it all for their sake and for the sake
• 5:41
Speaker 2: of the world. Jesus led them to a garden called Gethsemane.
• 5:47
Speaker 2: There Jesus would anguish over what was about to happen.
• 5:50
Speaker 2: He told his disciples to wait for him while he
• 5:53
Speaker 2: prayed Then he took Peter, James, and John to go
• 5:56
Speaker 2: further with him. My soul is filled with sorrow even
• 6:00
Speaker 2: to death. Remain here with me and keep watch. Jesus
• 6:05
Speaker 2: walked ahead a little further and fell to his knees
• 6:07
Speaker 2: before God. No one could truly know the depth of Jesus'
• 6:11
Speaker 2: dialogue with God that night. The Father and the Son
• 6:15
Speaker 2: spoke to each other with a bond that had preceded
• 6:18
Speaker 2: time itself. Jesus knew that he was going to be taken.
• 6:22
Speaker 2: and he would be offered up as a sacrifice for
• 6:24
Speaker 2: the redemption of mankind. Gazing into heaven, Jesus knelt before
• 6:30
Speaker 2: his God and asked, Father, if you are willing, take
• 6:33
Speaker 2: this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours,
• 6:38
Speaker 2: be done. It was not just the cross Jesus was
• 6:41
Speaker 2: speaking of, but also the cup of wrath he would
• 6:44
Speaker 2: endure so the world wouldn't have to. This led Jesus
• 6:48
Speaker 2: to sweat blood. In anguish he prayed, Yet God sent
• 6:52
Speaker 2: him comfort in the form of an angel. The cup
• 6:56
Speaker 2: would not be taken away. Jesus returned afterwards to find
• 7:00
Speaker 2: his disciples sleeping. Why are you sleeping? Rise and pray
• 7:06
Speaker 2: that you may not enter into temptation. For Jesus knew
• 7:10
Speaker 2: that the events about to unfold would require them to
• 7:13
Speaker 2: have faith. Jesus and the disciples heard sounds of several
• 7:17
Speaker 2: men in the distance carrying weapons, torches, and armors. Jesus
• 7:22
Speaker 2: did not wait for them to come to him. Instead,
• 7:25
Speaker 2: he crossed the brook and walked towards them. There he
• 7:28
Speaker 2: met Judas. Judas ran to Jesus and embraced him. Greetings, Rabbi,
• 7:34
Speaker 2: Judas said. Then he kissed him. Jesus saw Judas as
• 7:38
Speaker 2: he truly was and said, Judas, would you betray the
• 7:43
Speaker 2: Son of Man with a kiss? After this, the armed
• 7:47
Speaker 2: men surrounded Jesus with swords drawn and torches blazing. Looking
• 7:51
Speaker 2: at their faces illuminated by the flames, Jesus asked, Whom
• 7:55
Speaker 2: do you seek? Jesus of Nazareth, they responded, quite sure
• 8:00
Speaker 2: of who they were speaking to. Jesus, the maker of
• 8:04
Speaker 2: heaven and earth and the conquering Lion of Judah, stood
• 8:07
Speaker 2: before his pursuers. He spoke with the voice of God, saying,
• 8:12
Speaker 2: I am he. And in that instant the dozens of
• 8:16
Speaker 2: armed soldiers fell onto their backs, whiplashed by the power
• 8:20
Speaker 2: of Christ himself. Again, facing the soldiers, Jesus asked, Whom
• 8:26
Speaker 2: do you seek? Regaining their footing, now less sure of
• 8:31
Speaker 2: who they were speaking to, answered again, saying, Jesus of Nazareth,
• 8:36
Speaker 2: the Lord told them, I have told you that I
• 8:39
Speaker 2: was the one you were looking for, so let these
• 8:42
Speaker 2: other men go. Therefore Jesus' words, saying, I have not
• 8:47
Speaker 2: lost any of the men you gave me was fulfilled.
• 8:51
Speaker 2: The disciples, amazed, confused, and afraid, asked if they should
• 8:55
Speaker 2: come to Jesus' defense. Peter, without asking, sprang into action.
• 9:00
Speaker 2: He drew his sword and ran towards the men with
• 9:02
Speaker 2: righteous anger in his voice. Aiming for the head of
• 9:05
Speaker 2: a servant nearby, he cut off his ear, sending him
• 9:08
Speaker 2: screaming onto the floor. With blood spewing from the servant's ear,
• 9:12
Speaker 2: Jesus raised his voice yet again. Put your sword back
• 9:16
Speaker 2: into its place, Peter, for those who live by the
• 9:19
Speaker 2: sword will die by the sword. Again, he looked at
• 9:23
Speaker 2: Peter with intensity and honesty. Do you think that I
• 9:28
Speaker 2: cannot ask my father to send more than twelve legions
• 9:31
Speaker 2: of angels to save me? But how then will I
• 9:34
Speaker 2: fulfill the scriptures? Jesus then looked at the armed men
• 9:38
Speaker 2: and the priests behind them. Do you come to me
• 9:41
Speaker 2: with swords and clubs like you would a criminal? Jesus
• 9:49
Speaker 2: knew why. They knew what they were doing was an
• 9:53
Speaker 2: act to happen in the shadows. Jesus then knelt down
• 9:57
Speaker 2: to the servant writhing on the floor. His name was Jesus.
• 10:00
Speaker 2: was Malchus. Jesus touched Malchus and healed him before everyone.
• 10:06
Speaker 2: The men then took Jesus and arrested him. The disciples,
• 10:10
Speaker 2: unsure what to do and afraid, ran in different directions. Outwardly,
• 10:15
Speaker 2: it would have seemed as if Jesus was being taken
• 10:17
Speaker 2: forcibly to the temple. Yet Jesus went willingly, with intent
• 10:22
Speaker 2: and love for all mankind. He began the process of
• 10:25
Speaker 2: offering up his own life. Bound and tied, yet not trapped,
• 10:30
Speaker 2: Jesus was brought to the temple of the high priest Caiaphas,
• 10:34
Speaker 2: where hundreds of people had gathered to accuse him.
• 10:43
Speaker 3: We open today's reading with Jesus and Peter in conversation.
• 10:47
Speaker 3: Jesus knew that what was to come would strike fear
• 10:50
Speaker 3: into his followers and they would run in fear and terror. Peter,
• 10:55
Speaker 3: strong-willed and hard-headed as ever, insisted that though others may leave,
• 10:59
Speaker 3: that he would never abandon Jesus. You can count on me, Jesus,
• 11:04
Speaker 3: said Peter. Jesus told Peter that before the next morning,
• 11:08
Speaker 3: he would deny him not once but three times. Peter
• 11:12
Speaker 3: and the others insisted that they would never leave, but
• 11:15
Speaker 3: Jesus knew what was coming. It would be a lonely
• 11:18
Speaker 3: night of pain and suffering. Then Jesus took the disciples
• 11:23
Speaker 3: to a garden, the Garden of Gethsemane, to pray. He
• 11:27
Speaker 3: told them to stay and wait for him. Then he
• 11:30
Speaker 3: took three of his closest disciples a little ways away.
• 11:34
Speaker 3: With Peter, James, and John within earshot, Jesus began to
• 11:38
Speaker 3: pour out his heart to God. This was going to
• 11:41
Speaker 3: be excruciating. So if there was any other way, Jesus
• 11:46
Speaker 3: asked the Father to release him and somehow take away
• 11:49
Speaker 3: the cup of suffering. And yet, in the midst of that,
• 11:54
Speaker 3: Christ committed himself to do the will of the Father.
• 11:58
Speaker 3: And when he asked for the cup to be taken
• 12:00
Speaker 3: away from him, that cup which represents the dregs of
• 12:04
Speaker 3: sin of all the world, What was in that cup
• 12:06
Speaker 3: was the sin of every person who ever lived. This
• 12:09
Speaker 3: is why Jesus turned away from drinking the cup. And
• 12:12
Speaker 3: yet he said, not my will, Father, but your will
• 12:16
Speaker 3: be done. This surrender would prepare him for the sacrifice
• 12:20
Speaker 3: that he would give for the whole world to all
• 12:23
Speaker 3: who would believe in him. It's impossible for us to
• 12:27
Speaker 3: imagine the depth of pain that Jesus would be feeling,
• 12:30
Speaker 3: experiencing that night. He was about to endure death, but
• 12:34
Speaker 3: not just physical death. He was to experience spiritual death
• 12:38
Speaker 3: when he would die on the cross, the sin bearer,
• 12:41
Speaker 3: and giving up his life and experiencing the wrath of
• 12:45
Speaker 3: a holy God. His anguish was so deep that Jesus
• 12:49
Speaker 3: began to sweat like drops of blood. This was not
• 12:53
Speaker 3: figurative language, and we know that some individuals, when under
• 12:57
Speaker 3: extreme stress, can actually sweat blood. That's how broken and
• 13:02
Speaker 3: troubled our Lord was. and yet He was willing for
• 13:05
Speaker 3: you and me to endure the excruciating pain, the spiritual
• 13:09
Speaker 3: pain of what was yet to come. Though the Father
• 13:12
Speaker 3: did not take the cup away, He did not leave
• 13:15
Speaker 3: His Son without comfort. In Luke 22, verse 43, we
• 13:19
Speaker 3: read this, And there appeared to Him an angel from heaven,
• 13:23
Speaker 3: strengthening Him. In our own lives, there are times when
• 13:27
Speaker 3: we pray God, take away this cup, take away this hurt,
• 13:31
Speaker 3: take away this pain, and yet the pain remains. But
• 13:35
Speaker 3: God promises us that he will always be there for
• 13:38
Speaker 3: us to comfort us and strengthen us as we walk
• 13:41
Speaker 3: with him. He may send angels. His comfort, the comfort
• 13:45
Speaker 3: of the Holy Spirit is there with us. We can
• 13:47
Speaker 3: know that he never leaves us or forsakes us. Just
• 13:51
Speaker 3: as he took care of his darling son, Jesus, he
• 13:54
Speaker 3: will take care of us in Christ. Jesus then rose
• 13:58
Speaker 3: and found his disciples sleeping. He awakened them and told
• 14:01
Speaker 3: them to pray that they would not fall into temptation.
• 14:05
Speaker 3: And though they would not face the same challenges and
• 14:07
Speaker 3: suffering as Jesus, this night was not going to be
• 14:10
Speaker 3: easy for them either. Even as our Lord prepared to
• 14:14
Speaker 3: go to the cross, he ministered to those in his care.
• 14:19
Speaker 3: While they were still in the garden, Judas arrived along
• 14:21
Speaker 3: with Roman soldiers and religious leaders who had come to
• 14:25
Speaker 3: seize Jesus. Judas approached Jesus and kissed his cheek, signaling
• 14:30
Speaker 3: to the soldiers that this was their man. And in effect,
• 14:35
Speaker 3: Judas kissed life goodbye. He kissed Jesus, who is the
• 14:39
Speaker 3: way of the truth and the life, but he also
• 14:42
Speaker 3: kissed his own life goodbye and sealed and settled his fate.
• 14:46
Speaker 3: Jesus spoke calmly and gently to the soldiers, asking who
• 14:49
Speaker 3: they were seeking. He responded, I am he. That's a
• 14:54
Speaker 3: powerful statement. It was an I am statement. And when
• 14:58
Speaker 3: he made it, some were taken off their feet and
• 15:01
Speaker 3: thrown to the ground. Even in these moments, the words
• 15:05
Speaker 3: of Christ were filled with power and strength. Peter again
• 15:09
Speaker 3: acts brashly. He grabs a sword and managed to cut
• 15:12
Speaker 3: off the ear of Malchus, servant of one of the
• 15:14
Speaker 3: high priests. Jesus then rebuked Peter and then touched the man,
• 15:18
Speaker 3: healing his ear. If anyone still expected Jesus to rise
• 15:22
Speaker 3: up as a conquering king to overthrow the government, all
• 15:25
Speaker 3: hope was lost at this point as he silently surrendered
• 15:29
Speaker 3: to the will of the Father and went with the
• 15:31
Speaker 3: accusers to drink the cup that the Father had given him. Indeed,
• 15:36
Speaker 3: it looked like all hope was lost, but God was
• 15:39
Speaker 3: about to bring the greatest hope to all the world. Jesus,
• 15:43
Speaker 3: how we thank you that you surrendered your will to
• 15:46
Speaker 3: the will of the Father. that you gave your life
• 15:48
Speaker 3: to fulfill your purpose and plan on earth, and that
• 15:51
Speaker 3: is to die on the cross for our sins. Thank
• 15:54
Speaker 3: you for this good news of salvation, that if we
• 15:57
Speaker 3: put our faith and trust in you by repenting of
• 16:00
Speaker 3: our sins and receiving you as Lord and Savior, that
• 16:03
Speaker 3: all of our sins can be forgiven, that you will
• 16:06
Speaker 3: live in us, and that we will live with you
• 16:08
Speaker 3: forever in heaven. We thank you for the hope that
• 16:11
Speaker 3: you have provided for us at the cross and in
• 16:13
Speaker 3: the power of your resurrection. In Jesus' name.
• 16:17
  Speaker 1: Amen.
• 16:18
Speaker 3: Thank you for listening to today's Bible in a Year podcast.
• 16:21
Speaker 3: And before we go, I wanted to let you know
• 16:24
Speaker 3: that the Bible in a Year podcast is an outreach
• 16:26
Speaker 3: of PowerPoint Ministries and can only come to you each

Speaker 3: the Bible and how God's word transforms our lives. So
