- 0:00Speaker 3: Our show tonight.
- 0:00Speaker 1: Gino's with us here coming off a pair of winds
- 0:03Speaker 1: in Chicago and then Saturday the win over Butler.
- 0:07Speaker 3: Good to see it.
- 0:08Speaker 1: I guess you had a media session today. I'm gonna
- 0:10Speaker 1: take our stab here was the first question asked about
- 0:13Speaker 1: Sarah Strong's availability for tomorrow night when you take on Creighton,
- 0:20Speaker 1: or pretty close to the first question.
- 0:22Speaker 2: No, I was disappointing at they didn't want to know
- 0:25Speaker 2: if I was going to be there. So I told them,
- 0:31Speaker 2: when they start asking about me as much as they
- 0:33Speaker 2: ask about Sarah, I'll tell them whether Sarah's playing or not.
- 0:35Speaker 3: Are you doing load management tomorrow night?
- 0:37Speaker 2: No? No, you know I was trying to trying to
- 0:43Speaker 2: that everybody who doesn't follow basketball really close but knows
- 0:48Speaker 2: the term load management. From that, the NBA came up.
- 0:51Speaker 3: With that.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Us old folks that used to play, and guys that
- 0:56Speaker 2: I know that we used to play. We had never
- 0:59Speaker 2: heard of a word called load management. We never heard of,
- 1:04Speaker 2: you know, days off and not playing, and never heard
- 1:09Speaker 2: of a killes achilles tendon tears, never heard of a CL's,
- 1:14Speaker 2: never heard of calf strains. I remember if you were
- 1:19Speaker 2: if you remember when you were younger and you you
- 1:21Speaker 2: ever see, hey, this guy is out because he has
- 1:23Speaker 2: a calf strain.
- 1:26Speaker 3: You know.
- 1:27Speaker 2: So there's a lot of things that are you know,
- 1:30Speaker 2: that are popping up these days that maybe we have
- 1:34Speaker 2: better equipment to diagnose what it is that's bothering somebody,
- 1:40Speaker 2: you know, and you can't just say, rub some dirt
- 1:43Speaker 2: on it, you know, like we yeah, like rub some
- 1:48Speaker 2: dirt on it.
- 1:49Speaker 3: It'll feel better. You know.
- 1:52Speaker 2: It was mud for a beasting back in the yeah,
- 1:54Speaker 2: I mean, and they have ambulances and helicoptors in fire
- 2:00Speaker 2: trucks of low league games in case the kid gets
- 2:02Speaker 2: hit by a pitch in the ass or something like that.
- 2:06Speaker 2: But during this time of the year, as you get
- 2:10Speaker 2: to middle of February, you know, everybody's got some makes
- 2:15Speaker 2: and pains. Every single player that's playing college basketball, something's
- 2:19Speaker 2: bothering them. It's just a matter of what degree. And
- 2:22Speaker 2: you know, whether it's Sarah Strong or anybody else in
- 2:28Speaker 2: the country.
- 2:30Speaker 3: You know.
- 2:30Speaker 2: So Sarah's been feeling great. You know, she looks great,
- 2:35Speaker 2: She's playing great, so that the last couple of days
- 2:40Speaker 2: have just been about monitoring or practice in game time
- 2:45Speaker 2: because you know her her legs get sore because she
- 2:51Speaker 2: plays hard, you know, and she practices hard. And like
- 2:55Speaker 2: every kid, I wish I could, you know, I could
- 2:58Speaker 2: give every kid a couple of days off, But.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Yay, you don't have that luxury of a bye week
- 3:07Speaker 1: or a by weekend. The fact you're play nonconference games
- 3:10Speaker 1: this time of year.
- 3:11Speaker 3: We don't, we don't.
- 3:12Speaker 2: The problem we're given players a couple of days off
- 3:15Speaker 2: is they start to see what they're missing and they
- 3:18Speaker 2: don't want to come back. Like I remember when I
- 3:23Speaker 2: was younger, when I was coaching at the University of Virginia,
- 3:26Speaker 2: Terry Holland was the coach, and he said, I never
- 3:28Speaker 2: give my guys two days off. And I said, wow,
- 3:31Speaker 2: he goes because they're going to start to do all
- 3:33Speaker 2: the things that they can't do because they have practice
- 3:35Speaker 2: every day, and then they're going to realize this isn't bad.
- 3:39Speaker 2: And I remember Bjorn Borg, a great tennis player, when
- 3:44Speaker 2: he was twenty seven or something like that. I know,
- 3:46Speaker 2: he said I'm going to take a month off, rest,
- 3:50Speaker 2: come back and he never came back. That was the
- 3:53Speaker 2: end of bjorn.
- 3:54Speaker 3: Borg, right, Yeah, he retired early.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Yeah, and they said that's it, I'm done. You know,
- 3:58Speaker 2: you mean, it's like I went to the Final four
- 4:02Speaker 2: in Houston when our men played in Houston, right, And
- 4:07Speaker 2: I hadn't been to a men's final four since nineteen
- 4:10Speaker 2: eighty one because it happened to be in Philadelphia, and
- 4:14Speaker 2: North Carolina played Indiana in the championship game and Virginia
- 4:20Speaker 2: was in the semifinals, which is where I was going
- 4:23Speaker 2: to go coach anyway, and I hadn't been to one.
- 4:29Speaker 2: And now, obviously it's different. Nineteen eighty one, it was
- 4:31Speaker 2: at the Spectrums nineteen thousand people. You know, I'm down
- 4:34Speaker 2: in Houston. It'sent whatever that dome is called. Its seventy
- 4:38Speaker 2: thousand people at the game. But I'm up there and
- 4:41Speaker 2: there's a suite and there's food and there's drinks and
- 4:44Speaker 2: watching it on big screen. And so I asked our
- 4:47Speaker 2: development people, I said, is this what you guys do
- 4:50Speaker 2: with our final fource? And they said yeah, And I went, man,
- 4:57Speaker 2: maybe we should stop going and be up here and
- 4:59Speaker 2: one of these things. I mean, it is a great
- 5:02Speaker 2: spectacle that everybody loves except the people that are coaching
- 5:05Speaker 2: and playing in it. You know, we're miserable and it
- 5:09Speaker 2: is an unbelievable experience and I didn't realize what you know,
- 5:13Speaker 2: what it was and what I was, what I was
- 5:15Speaker 2: giving up just to, you know, just to be on
- 5:18Speaker 2: the floor coaching. So yeah, be careful taking some time
- 5:22Speaker 2: off from your job. You'll never go back.
- 5:25Speaker 1: So if we get to the Final four this year
- 5:26Speaker 1: in Phoenix, just take some time off, go upstairs.
- 5:28Speaker 2: And I'd rather be upstairs. I'd rather be upstairs, I
- 5:31Speaker 2: really would. That way, I could just walk away from
- 5:33Speaker 2: the don't have to watch. That wouldn't look too good.
- 5:37Speaker 2: I just walked away from the events.
- 5:39Speaker 1: Well you did, You did pretty well at the final
- 5:40Speaker 1: four last year.
- 5:41Speaker 3: That went pretty well.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Yeah, about as well as you could expect. Just quick update.
- 5:46Speaker 1: We'll get to our first break here in a sec.
- 5:47Speaker 1: I see Block is practicing again, but still a couple
- 5:51Speaker 1: days away, maybe a week before she comes back to play.
- 5:55Speaker 1: I don't know it sound like said I just I mean,
- 5:58Speaker 1: you said maybe Mark, you're open for market.
- 6:01Speaker 3: But she just started practicing again, correct.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Yeah, she started working out. She looks great. I mean
- 6:07Speaker 2: that's the other thing. You know, they come back, you know,
- 6:09Speaker 2: they're well rested and anxious to go, and you know,
- 6:14Speaker 2: and you don't realize how much you miss her. She
- 6:18Speaker 2: reminds me of Atlna every time I would go to practice.
- 6:20Speaker 2: I can't believe I got to put up with this
- 6:22Speaker 2: again today. And then as soon as she's not there,
- 6:25Speaker 2: I go, where is she?
- 6:27Speaker 3: Like?
- 6:27Speaker 2: We can't win without her, you know, like some players
- 6:30Speaker 2: are just you know, even as freshmen. You know, Blanca
- 6:34Speaker 2: is just so exciting to watch and so much fun
- 6:36Speaker 2: to see what she's going to do next and how
- 6:40Speaker 2: much she stirs up the pop when she gets in
- 6:42Speaker 2: the game. You know, and you saw the game the
- 6:44Speaker 2: other day, the last couple of games that she hasn't
- 6:46Speaker 2: been in, it's like you you kind of wait for
- 6:49Speaker 2: that five minute mark when you know she's going to
- 6:51Speaker 2: come in and reminds me when.
- 6:53Speaker 3: We had Shay.
- 6:54Speaker 2: You know, at about the six minute mark in the
- 6:57Speaker 2: first quarter, Shaye would start taking her warm up off
- 7:00Speaker 2: because she knew, you know, five minutes and forty five
- 7:02Speaker 2: seconds she's going in the game, and you know, you
- 7:06Speaker 2: look forward to that, so we'll have her back sooner
- 7:09Speaker 2: rather than later.
- 7:10Speaker 3: Right, Well, we were in Chicago.
- 7:12Speaker 1: I went to practice and Michael and Paul Polo can
- 7:15Speaker 1: attest to this. Blanc It's not like she sat around
- 7:18Speaker 1: at practice the day of the game. She's at one
- 7:22Speaker 1: side by mid court, jogging towards the hoop, takes a shot,
- 7:24Speaker 1: comes back over here. She must have did that for like,
- 7:27Speaker 1: what forty five minutes, Mike, forty forty five minutes. Maybe
- 7:30Speaker 1: that's that's that's quite the workout you get there. I mean,
- 7:33Speaker 1: it wasn't dead sprints. Let's not go crazy. It's not
- 7:36Speaker 1: like herb Brooks doing herbies back in the day. But
- 7:39Speaker 1: still that's good to keep her going. And she looks
- 7:42Speaker 1: great and boy, nicest kid you could ever meet too.
- 7:45Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah, she's fantastic. And you know, like I
- 7:49Speaker 2: said earlier today, I just keep checking the airports, you know,
- 7:52Speaker 2: when you get, like I said, you get people a
- 7:53Speaker 2: day off. I check all the airports. You know. I
- 7:55Speaker 2: don't know whether she's I check all the flights to Ecuador,
- 7:58Speaker 2: all the flights back to Italy. As long as you're
- 8:01Speaker 2: still in the country. I'm good.
- 8:02Speaker 3: I'm all right.
- 8:03Speaker 1: All right, we'll take our first break, we'll get into
- 8:05Speaker 1: some game stuff and we'll bring back a little a
- 8:08Speaker 1: little nugget of information. Speaking of Shay, we'll get to
- 8:10Speaker 1: that in a minute. This is the Ukon of Women's
- 8:12Speaker 1: Basketball Coaches, show. We're live at Kaffe or here on Learfield.
- 8:14Speaker 3: Stay with us
