- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome to the good morning from the Chicken
- 0:04Coop podcast. My name is Kim Johnson and I am
- 0:07a mastermindset coach, creative strategist, and also happened to
- 0:10be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to teach
- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring
- 0:20some joy into the world. So welcome to the coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:27Hey. Everybody good.
- 0:29Morning from the very, very, very dark sky and dark farm.
- 0:34Get to see all the stars and you can hear the rooster off in the
- 0:37distance. And when I was a kid, we're
- 0:40shooting this in the dark because there's a point when I
- 0:42was a kid, I was terrified of the dark, terrified of it.
- 0:45Like could not handle darkness at all.
- 0:48Didn't like it. Had to have a night light in my
- 0:51room, had to have a night light in the hallway, had to have a
- 0:54night light in the bathroom. And still to this day inside my
- 0:57house, I have Night Lights, not for the same reason, but I still
- 1:01have Night Lights. And this, this fear of darkness,
- 1:06no one ever addressed it with me.
- 1:07They just always would say, oh, it's OK, there's nothing there.
- 1:10But no one ever addressed it with me as to what was
- 1:13happening. Now, obviously move forward to
- 1:16where I am now. And I can tell you that it's all
- 1:19based around my certainty, girl driving my bus and how I, I
- 1:23don't like to not know things. So in the dark, you don't know
- 1:28what's in front of you. You don't see it.
- 1:30And many years ago I saw this quote and I've saved it.
- 1:35In fact, I just posted it I think yesterday or the day
- 1:38before up onto Instagram that sometimes you know when you're
- 1:42planted in the darkness, when you're in the darkness, you feel
- 1:46planted and then all of a sudden, you know, you bloom and
- 1:50I and that just I love that theory.
- 1:53I love that concept because the truth is there is a high chance
- 1:58that when you're afraid of something, when you're moving
- 2:01into something, that it's not just your fault for having out
- 2:06of control emotions. It's part of our wiring.
- 2:09We can't help it as human beings.
- 2:11That core system of our brain and our fight or flight syndrome
- 2:17is built around the amygdala having this survival.
- 2:21And so darkness meant fear. Darkness actually at its core
- 2:26was fearful when there was no lights.
- 2:29And if you think back about this, it's it's just absolutely
- 2:33profound to me that yes, I was operating off of a very core
- 2:38system as a very little kid. And because no one could explain
- 2:42it to me or no one thought to explain it to me, I would just
- 2:45be like, oh, this is just silly. You're fine, there's nothing to
- 2:47worry about. You know, whatever it was that
- 2:49they were saying, it wasn't enough for me.
- 2:52I couldn't comprehend what was actually going on.
- 2:55So therefore I got scared all the time.
- 2:57Not to mention, you know, the scary, you always have the
- 3:01scariest when you're a kid because you're little and you
- 3:04feel very vulnerable. And I think again, that survival
- 3:08mechanism, it always comes back to, am I in a survival state?
- 3:12And my clients who I work with regularly know, I'll say, well,
- 3:15is that threat real or perceived?
- 3:16Because if it's perceived, then you know it's operate operating
- 3:20off of an automatic system that's running in your head.
- 3:22And if it's real, then move your ass and do something about it.
- 3:26But in the most of the time it is perceived threat.
- 3:30So we start off right away at a deficit because we're up against
- 3:34that part of our brain that we need to recondition to move
- 3:38around it. And it's hard.
- 3:41So coming and making friends with the darkness over the years
- 3:45has been a thing for me where I will make sure that I am doing
- 3:50that, making friends with the darkness.
- 3:52How do I do it? Well, I come out and I look at
- 3:53the things that are great. I let my eyes adjust.
- 3:56I look up at the stars, which are astoundingly beautiful
- 3:59tonight, Like they are so beautiful.
- 4:02It's, I mean, well, it's this morning now, but it still looks
- 4:05like night and they're, they're just so bright.
- 4:09It's stunning. I couldn't see that.
- 4:12If I refused to put the darkness in some form in my life, I would
- 4:17just miss it. I would just miss the whole
- 4:18thing. So I can look at that.
- 4:20Hearing all the frogs, hearing all the creatures again, That's
- 4:24something that doesn't happen during the day.
- 4:26I can't hear that bullfrog. You can hear him off in the
- 4:28distance. He was just going, now you shut
- 4:32up, but you can hear him off in the distance and there he is
- 4:37right in the pond. And I, I wouldn't hear him if in
- 4:41fact it was daylight and you can hear him talking to another
- 4:44frog. It's so cool.
- 4:46But in the daytime they're silent.
- 4:48So I can find things that are good about the night time.
- 4:52I can find things that I like about the night time.
- 4:55And that's what we have to do when we're in that state of
- 4:57being in the darkness. We have to find things that are
- 5:01good for us to know. We have to find those little
- 5:03things like when we don't know something, we have to say, OK,
- 5:07this is an opportunity to learn when we have to let you know.
- 5:11That's just how I feel about doing all the video stuff.
- 5:13I have to learn. So it's one step at a time, one
- 5:17thing at a time, not to overwhelm ourselves, but just to
- 5:20be like, OK, I'm going to chip away at this.
- 5:23But there are gifts in the darkness in being planted
- 5:26because it gives you an opportunity to bloom.
- 5:29All right, my friends, I hope you have a blessed day and I
- 5:32will see you tomorrow. Bye.
