Transcript
- 0:03Speaker 1: President Trump now on the ground in Malaysia, the first
- 0:06Speaker 1: leg of a high stakes tour. Trade of course at
- 0:09Speaker 1: the top of the President's agenda, with this trip expected
- 0:12Speaker 1: to culminate in a summit with Chinese President Jijin Ping.
- 0:15Speaker 1: US Trade Representative Jamison Greer joins us a little bit
- 0:18Speaker 1: earlier to preview the rest of the trip.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Ambassador, Welcome to Fox New Sunday.
- 0:26Speaker 3: Thank you, thanks for having me.
- 0:27Speaker 2: All Right, So, news.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Trickling out this morning very early says that you and
- 0:31Speaker 1: your Chinese counterparts have at least reached the contours of
- 0:33Speaker 1: a deal.
- 0:34Speaker 2: It goes to the leaders.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Now, how close are you to getting this across the
- 0:37Speaker 1: finish line.
- 0:40Speaker 3: Well, it's really going to depend on President Trump and
- 0:44Speaker 3: President She. We've had very constructive conversations yesterday and this
- 0:49Speaker 3: morning to find a path forward where we can have
- 0:54Speaker 3: more access to rare US from China, we can try
- 0:57Speaker 3: to balance out our trade deficit with sales from the
- 0:59Speaker 3: United State States, and we can have what I would say,
- 1:04Speaker 3: you know, continued pause on some of the actions we've
- 1:06Speaker 3: taken against each other.
- 1:07Speaker 1: So part of what China would do with respect to
- 1:10Speaker 1: the rare earth is they were to require exporters anywhere
- 1:12Speaker 1: in the world starting in December to seek approval from
- 1:15Speaker 1: Beijing to sell products or components that include Chinese rare
- 1:19Speaker 1: Earth's or were made with Chinese rare Earth's related equipment.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Obviously gives them quite a bargaining chip in these conversations,
- 1:26Speaker 1: but news coming out this morning says that there is
- 1:28Speaker 1: some deferral or an understanding for hope of deferring that
- 1:32Speaker 1: particular problem.
- 1:36Speaker 3: Well, I won't comment too much on the details, but
- 1:39Speaker 3: I will say that our goal is to make sure
- 1:41Speaker 3: that those controls that are very expansive do not go
- 1:45Speaker 3: into effect. This is something that wouldn't affect that would
- 1:48Speaker 3: affect not only the United States, it would also affect
- 1:51Speaker 3: the rest of the world. It would come up trade,
- 1:54Speaker 3: it would give the China control over technology transactions. It's
- 1:58Speaker 3: completely unacceptable. One of the major objectives of these talks,
- 2:02Speaker 3: and I think we're progressing toward that goal very well.
- 2:05Speaker 1: So President Trump has said the first thing he wants
- 2:07Speaker 1: to talk about with President g is the issue of fentanyl.
- 2:10Speaker 1: China says that it has been working with the US
- 2:13Speaker 1: and international players on that issue, and essentially that the tariffs,
- 2:17Speaker 1: the pressure on China with regard to fentanyl or quote
- 2:20Speaker 1: just a pretext. I understand that has been discussed.
- 2:23Speaker 2: What can you tell us on that front.
- 2:27Speaker 3: Well, first of all, none of it is a pretext.
- 2:30Speaker 3: Fentanyl is a scourge in our country. It's been well
- 2:32Speaker 3: documented killed hundreds of thousands of Americans, and a lot
- 2:36Speaker 3: of the inputs come from China. So that was certainly
- 2:40Speaker 3: part of our discussions over the past two days, is
- 2:42Speaker 3: how we can work better with China. If China can
- 2:45Speaker 3: control rare earths and other things, that can certainly control
- 2:48Speaker 3: fentanyl and the imports for fentanyl. So I think if
- 2:51Speaker 3: there's a path forward for China to do better on
- 2:55Speaker 3: controlling those products, then there's a path forward on the
- 2:59Speaker 3: West side with respect to the trade treatment for China.
- 3:02Speaker 1: Soybeans also a huge issue. Bluemberg reporting this, saying a
- 3:07Speaker 1: country that last year purchased thirteen billion dollars of US beans,
- 3:11Speaker 1: more than twenty percent of the entire crop for animal
- 3:13Speaker 1: feed and cooking oil, officially still hasn't booked a single
- 3:17Speaker 1: shipment from this falls bounty. The president says they've stopped
- 3:22Speaker 1: buying soybeans, trying to hurt our farmers.
- 3:24Speaker 2: But quote, he's not going to let that happen.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Was that part of the discussion today as well?
- 3:30Speaker 2: This was part of the discussion.
- 3:32Speaker 3: We're quite focused on making sure that China buys our
- 3:36Speaker 3: agricultural products. It's soybeans, it's sorgum, and it's other things.
- 3:40Speaker 3: China actually has not covered up all its soybean needs
- 3:44Speaker 3: for December and January, so they still really need American product,
- 3:49Speaker 3: and we expect that China will need to resume those
- 3:52Speaker 3: kinds of purchases if they want to have a good
- 3:53Speaker 3: deal with the United States.
- 3:55Speaker 1: There are so many issues that involve China and that
- 3:57Speaker 1: entire region. Taiwan is one of them as well. Rider's
- 4:01Speaker 1: reporting this saying the fear in Taipei, which has long
- 4:04Speaker 1: enjoyed strong unofficial support from Washington, is that a Trump
- 4:08Speaker 1: g meeting next week in South Korea could see some
- 4:10Speaker 1: sort of quote selling out of Taiwan's interests by Trump.
- 4:15Speaker 2: Tuji.
- 4:16Speaker 1: Will that be part of the President's conversation and how
- 4:19Speaker 1: should Taiwan interpret US support at this point?
- 4:24Speaker 3: Well, it certainly was not part of our trade talks.
- 4:27Speaker 3: Wasn't mentioned one time, not at all. You know, when
- 4:30Speaker 3: we meet with the Chinese for the broader bilateral talks
- 4:33Speaker 3: in Korea. You know, it's the kind of thing that
- 4:36Speaker 3: the Chinese almost always raise, right, They have a variety
- 4:38Speaker 3: of things that are issues for them that they always raise.
- 4:41Speaker 3: Will they raise Taiwan? I don't know, but it certainly
- 4:45Speaker 3: does not figure into our trade talks in any way.
- 4:47Speaker 1: So as those talks continue here at home, the shutdown continues,
- 4:51Speaker 1: and so there's a bit of a critique of this
- 4:52Speaker 1: particular trip in the work that you're doing. Senate Minority
- 4:55Speaker 1: Leader Chuck Schumer saying this, while Americans are struggling to
- 4:59Speaker 1: make ends meet, Federal workers are going without pay, and
- 5:01Speaker 1: millions of families are bracing for soaring healthcare costs, the
- 5:05Speaker 1: president is leaving the country. America is shut down, and
- 5:08Speaker 1: the President is skipping town. He goes on to say
- 5:11Speaker 1: Democrats have repeatedly requested a meeting to negotiate, but the
- 5:14Speaker 1: President is, essentially, he said, abandon his post by going
- 5:17Speaker 1: on this trip.
- 5:18Speaker 2: Why was this trip important now for the White House?
- 5:22Speaker 3: Well, while Democrats themselves are furloughed and not working, the
- 5:25Speaker 3: rest of America is working. The farmers are working, the
- 5:28Speaker 3: manufacturers are working, and they need to ship their products overseas.
- 5:32Speaker 3: We're at a critical time in the world, and we
- 5:34Speaker 3: need to make sure that we know who our friends
- 5:36Speaker 3: and allies are and coming on this trip, making these
- 5:39Speaker 3: trade deals, making deals on critical minerals. This is a
- 5:42Speaker 3: national security issue, it's an economic security issue, and it's
- 5:45Speaker 3: critical that the President be here. And we've already seen
- 5:48Speaker 3: a great outcome today. We signed two full trade deals
- 5:51Speaker 3: with Malaysia and Cambodia, two agreements in principle with Thailand
- 5:55Speaker 3: and Vietnam. We made critical minerals deals. We did a
- 5:58Speaker 3: peace deal between Thailand of Cambodia. This is the President's
- 6:02Speaker 3: job and he's doing.
- 6:02Speaker 1: It and best re Greer. We appreciate your time. Safe travels, sir,
