- 0:00Time now for back to the basics and healthcare with Balanced Life Cara Practica.
- 0:03We have doctor Harley joining us. Hey doing doctor Harley, Hey, John,
- 0:06I'm doing a fantastic got to talk about something. I'm excited to talk
- 0:09about. Sleeping. And that's something that if you don't get the right amount
- 0:13of sleep, it ruins your entire day. Right. It's like I was
- 0:16thinking, like, I don't know what. What haven't we talked about in
- 0:18law, Like, we haven't talked about sleep, and that's been something I
- 0:21know I've been hearing a lot in my office lately, either people like I
- 0:24just can't sleep. I'm not getting enough sleep. I wake up roll around
- 0:28where I wake up uncomfortable, or I can't fall asleep because I'm uncomfortable,
- 0:31or I wake up and my neck hurts, you know, all these different
- 0:33things, and it's like, it's crazy how much sleep can affect us.
- 0:36But if you think about it, we spend a good portion of our life
- 0:39sleeping, like one third of it. If you eight hours a night,
- 0:42that's one third of your life. Right. So it's like some people like,
- 0:45man, I wish I got eight hours. Yeah, if you're listening
- 0:48to this, this is the call for you if this is the one that
- 0:51like you're like, I don't sleep very much. It's now it's time to
- 0:54start making some of those changes. So when someone comes in and at times
- 0:57asks like you know, how old is your bed? You know your pill
- 1:00hell? Like how are they do? Have a good one? Not so
- 1:02good one? And usually it's like it could be better, And I know
- 1:06your mattress, they say probably five to seven years about average for when you
- 1:10should be looking at replacing it, especially if it's starting to become uncomfortable and
- 1:14it's kind of older, it's time to get a new mattress. And that's
- 1:17not a bad thing to do. Everyone stall because then you get like that
- 1:19new mattress. For me, when we get a new bad I'll fall asleep
- 1:23like the instant lying. And maybe sometimes it takes a little bit to break
- 1:26in as well. I know when we had first gotten our bed and my
- 1:27husband Weston wasn't so comfortable, it took a while for it to really break
- 1:30in and get comfortable. So that's why they give you like ninety day return
- 1:34because they want to make sure that you've had time to get used to it.
- 1:38Other things are pillows, you know, I get asked what's the best
- 1:41pillow out there. I don't think there's a one size fits all kind of
- 1:45answer to that, because every person sleeps so differently. My best recommendation,
- 1:49though, is something that keeps you in a good neutral posture. If you're
- 1:53laying on your side, your head shouldn't be nearly touching your shoulder if you're
- 1:57laying on that shoulder, and it shouldn't be almos cranked to the other shoulder
- 2:00if you if you're sleep, if you're sleeping on your left shoulder, right,
- 2:04your head shouldn't be almost touching your left shoulder. But then it also
- 2:06shouldn't be jammed up towards your right shoulder. That you want to keep your
- 2:08neck knights and neutral. Also not like forward, like you're all curled up
- 2:12in a ball. Again, that's gonna cause some neck pain. Intention And
- 2:15if you're sleeping on your back, your pillow should support the curve in your
- 2:20neck, so like your head. You shouldn't feel like your head's just like
- 2:22cranked way back. It shouldn't feel like it's cranked way forward. You shouldn't
- 2:24be sleeping side to side so much trying to keep everything in a good neutral
- 2:29posture. That's going to be the best for your spine. What if you
- 2:31roll around a lot, just have a bunch of different pillows and change them
- 2:35out. This is for back side when you're sleeping. It it's kind of
- 2:39hard to like change that. You're like, well, what if I wake
- 2:42up all twisted up in a pretzel? And there's no way I can avoid
- 2:45that. I don't know what to tell you on that other than try to
- 2:47fall asleep at least in good posture. It trying sleeping in a straight jacket
- 2:52maybe not quite that extreme, and it maybe you might sleep tight. They
- 2:54just tie you down, that's it. And maybe it's your bed's not comfortable
- 2:58enough supporting you enough, and that why you roll around. You're moving around
- 3:00so much. So you know, the best kind of bed really is something
- 3:04that's firmer, so it's going to support your curves. Because if you have
- 3:07something that's really soft and pillowy, sure it feels comfortable initially, but you're
- 3:10gonna wake up sore because your body's going to relax into that bed, Especially
- 3:15if it's really cushiony soft, you're gonna lose that curve because those muscles start
- 3:20to expand, they relax and then when you get up in the morning,
- 3:23they contract, you know, to help you stand up right. That's why
- 3:24you're going to have a lot of back paint if you have a really soft
- 3:27one. So something a little bit firmer is going to actually like support the
- 3:31curves in your spine, keeping you in good posture the whole night. And
- 3:35kind of on the same subject, there are times that people will lay down
- 3:38just fine. I go to bed just fine. Then I wake up sore
- 3:40because something happened while I'm sleeping. And it's usually not like they were out,
- 3:45you know, doing a marathon, or maybe they were in their dreams.
- 3:47Who knows, but is that pretty common for people to wake up and
- 3:50have like my back is sore or this is sore. I hear that multiple
- 3:53times a week. What usually causes that is it? It could be the
- 3:55old bed, It could be that you have, you know, misalignments in
- 3:59your spine that things aren't moving very well. So then again as things kind
- 4:02of seeing can relax overnight, that area that's stuck isn't relaxing like it should.
- 4:08So then you wake up and it's just been fighting that relaxation since we're
- 4:11getting adjusted actually can really help with your sleepy want help with your daily aches
- 4:15and pains, but also help calm your nervous system down because that can be
- 4:18an issue too. Someone's just like their brains just don't go go go go,
- 4:21go go go mode all the time. And you know you're finally ready
- 4:25to sleep, brain's like, well, no, we can't sleep. We
- 4:27got all this stuff to do. Yeah, here's like, I'm so tired,
- 4:29I just want to sleep. That's where if your nervous system's overactive,
- 4:31you're stuck in fight or flight, it's hard to sleep as well. So
- 4:34that's one thing we see with chiropractic. It's helping to calm the nervous system
- 4:39down, helping to remove a lot of irritation. You start sleeping better because
- 4:43your brain's not just on go mode all the time. If somebody listening is
- 4:46going, i'd like to know more about this, they can come and talk
- 4:48to you, or they can get ahold of you. What's the best way
- 4:50to connect with balance life chiropractic. Yeah, if you're ready to actually start
