- 0:37This is Laura Dirdo with the Becker's Healthcare
- 0:39Podcast. I'm thrilled today to be joined by
- 0:42Scott McClain, senior vice president and chief information
- 0:44officer at MedStar Health. Scott, it's a pleasure
- 0:46to have you on the podcast today. Thanks,
- 0:48Laura. I'm really happy to be here.
- 0:50Absolutely. Now I'm excited to catch up with
- 0:52you. I know you've, spoken with Becker's for
- 0:54years and really been a great,
- 0:56resource for us, you know, very much on
- 0:58the cutting edge of technology and everything that's
- 1:00happening in the digital health space. So this
- 1:02will be a great opportunity to catch up,
- 1:04learn a little bit more about
- 1:07how you're thinking about the future as well.
- 1:07But before we dive in, can you just
- 1:08tell me a little bit more about yourself
- 1:10and, you know, MedStar Health overall, especially for
- 1:13our listeners who just started to to join
- 1:15the Becker's podcast?
- 1:17Sure. I have, been at MedStar Health for
- 1:19eight years now, and we are a integrated
- 1:21delivery system in the Baltimore, Washington, DC region.
- 1:24We have 10 hospitals and over 300 ambulatory
- 1:28care sites. We have a Medicaid insurer both
- 1:31in,
- 1:32Maryland and DC,
- 1:34and we're a teaching affiliate of Georgetown University
- 1:37Medical Center. And so
- 1:39we're a a full service,
- 1:41integrated delivery network with, insurer. We have a
- 1:45a research institute, and as well as an
- 1:47innovation
- 1:48area.
- 1:50That's fascinating to hear. You know, I I
- 1:51know there's so much that goes into putting
- 1:53it all together.
- 1:55So, you know, I'm curious. What are some
- 1:57of the big things that you're watching right
- 1:59now, some of the trends that you're most
- 2:01focused on as you're thinking about how you
- 2:03need to prepare for the future?
- 2:05Well, it's a great question. I I think
- 2:07that the
- 2:09strategy is to use platforms. I think a
- 2:11lot of people are talking about the EHR,
- 2:14ERP, the collaboration
- 2:15platforms,
- 2:17and making sure that those are implemented as
- 2:20fully as possible. And we're going through
- 2:23a rationalization of all our applications now as
- 2:26we do our,
- 2:27EHR install
- 2:29and, making sure that we're getting the value
- 2:31out of, those platforms. And then there as
- 2:34you well know, and I'm sure we'll talk
- 2:36about, lots of opportunities to
- 2:38build functionality on top of those platforms and
- 2:40use some of the technologies
- 2:41around artificial intelligence and
- 2:45ambient speech and and various things that will
- 2:47make it easier for our patients and clinicians
- 2:50to, go through the care process and and
- 2:53lots of, good features and functionality in the
- 2:55administrative areas too.
- 2:57Absolutely. I think that makes a lot of
- 2:59sense. And, you know, when you are looking
- 3:01at, that process of doing that
- 3:04rationalization of the applications, thinking through, you know,
- 3:07everything that has to happen and go correctly
- 3:09in order for,
- 3:11it to be done and then continue to
- 3:13add value to the organization overall.
- 3:16What is really important within that process for
- 3:18you and your team to stay focused on?
- 3:20How do you make sure that everybody is
- 3:22doing what they need to do, and you're
- 3:24able to be efficient and effective
- 3:26with that rationalization
- 3:27process?
- 3:29Well, I think it it starts with,
- 3:31good leadership, and our CEO often talks about
- 3:34having a strategy,
- 3:35having leadership, and being able to execute on
- 3:38that. And that's how we
- 3:40approach things at MedStar Health.
- 3:42And as part of this, strategic plan that
- 3:44we're in right now, which,
- 3:46we are
- 3:47looking to, continue our growth and, ability to
- 3:51serve our patients and and make a better,
- 3:53patient access and experience,
- 3:55in this time period.
- 3:57The foundation of that is, organizational
- 3:59transformation,
- 4:01around not just,
- 4:02technology and the EHR platform,
- 4:05but, also
- 4:07what it takes to have people change management
- 4:09and the right standard processes to do that.
- 4:12And
- 4:13so I I think as we talk about
- 4:15these things, you start with core values of,
- 4:18again, making sure that,
- 4:20we have the right approach for our patients,
- 4:23and the access that we want them to
- 4:25have to our caregivers and and system.
- 4:29And then I think that there's a lot
- 4:31of respectful
- 4:32listening. You you can imagine we have a
- 4:34good governance structure set up for our implementation,
- 4:38and, we wanna hear from people about what
- 4:40is important,
- 4:42in the various care areas, the specific,
- 4:45unique
- 4:46locations that we have in different types of
- 4:48hospitals and communities and ambulatory sites.
- 4:52But, holding to those values of,
- 4:55being standard about our approach that we would
- 4:57have,
- 4:59the best, level of quality and safety,
- 5:01in all of our care, areas and things
- 5:04that we do
- 5:05and, the best patient experience from,
- 5:08registration scheduling, handling, billing, and, various other communications
- 5:12that we have with them. So there are
- 5:14a lot of things in the environment that
- 5:16have, come along and have been helpful with
- 5:19the core systems we use today,
- 5:21But we're going through a whole process of
- 5:23evaluating every one of them and can the
- 5:25new platform do that function,
- 5:28at least for a great percentage of it.
- 5:31And and then we're respectfully
- 5:33going through and having conversations with important stakeholders
- 5:37about how our our new platforms are gonna
- 5:40cover the functionality that they they have in
- 5:42existing systems.
- 5:44And then you have to be rigorous,
- 5:46about being able
- 5:48to set up and support,
- 5:50the new platforms
- 5:51and any integrations that need to take place
- 5:54there, but also be very disciplined about eliminating
- 5:56and retiring the, the old systems
- 5:59and making sure that you're
- 6:01not in a place where you're
- 6:03still using things that are confusing for clinicians
- 6:06or patients,
- 6:07or certainly not paying for things that are
- 6:09not in use anymore.
- 6:11Got it. That makes a lot of sense.
- 6:13And, you know, it's really helpful to understand
- 6:14the gravity of everything that goes into,
- 6:17these types of processes,
- 6:19you know, across the system. I think so
- 6:20often it can be,
- 6:22just seen as, hey. You know, we need
- 6:23this to happen, and then,
- 6:25you magically make it happen. But there's a
- 6:26lot of work that actually goes into it.
- 6:29When you think about the last six to
- 6:31eighteen months or so, what work are you
- 6:33most proud of? What are you focused on
- 6:35and excited about?
- 6:36Well, I think, you know, our our mission
- 6:38is to,
- 6:39deliver,
- 6:40very high quality health care in this region.
- 6:43It's a important strategic region in the country
- 6:45with the nation's capital.
- 6:47And, we wanna do that again by being
- 6:50available to the patients that wanna see us,
- 6:52And that's been part of
- 6:54our way of going about things of of
- 6:56being available and having lots of, physical locations,
- 6:59in the region for people to access.
- 7:01And we also have a digital strategy of
- 7:04ways that, patients can connect to us through
- 7:07our, MedStar Health app and, portals.
- 7:10And, so I'm excited about the way that
- 7:13we can can meet our patients for the
- 7:15care that they need and, that that growth,
- 7:19the ability to have good growth, but maintain
- 7:23quality and patient experience,
- 7:25across that that growth in the region.
- 7:28Absolutely. That makes a lot of sense. And
- 7:30I'm curious, when you talk about growth and
- 7:33talk about that patient experience
- 7:35and everything else, I I know that encompasses
- 7:38many,
- 7:40departments system wide in many initiatives. But from
- 7:43your seat, and thinking about the digital strategy,
- 7:46what are are are kind of the things
- 7:48that are bubbling to the forefront for you,
- 7:50especially in the next year, that are gonna
- 7:52be critical for that patient experience? How do
- 7:54you really,
- 7:56see your efforts, you know, behind the scenes
- 7:59and then in front to,
- 8:01you know, becoming a big part of that
- 8:03strategic value that you're looking for?
- 8:06Well, I'm gonna go back to the the
- 8:07platform idea and the what we talked about
- 8:10of being able to utilize the functionality. So
- 8:12with our our new EHR platform that we're
- 8:15implementing
- 8:16that we expect to go live in, late
- 8:19twenty twenty seven,
- 8:21we are,
- 8:22looking at the ways that we can configure
- 8:23that platform
- 8:25to take advantage of best practices.
- 8:28And this would
- 8:29involve a
- 8:30better patient experience
- 8:32in terms of how they're able to,
- 8:35seek and,
- 8:37schedule,
- 8:38appointments,
- 8:39access,
- 8:40urgent care or specialty care or, you know,
- 8:43hospital,
- 8:44ED if if needed.
- 8:46And so,
- 8:48that, I think, is what we're we're focused
- 8:50on mostly
- 8:51here and excited about. And I I think
- 8:53that there are I know you're talking to
- 8:56other CIOs and and leaders about the capabilities
- 9:00that,
- 9:01the technology environment is producing, again, with,
- 9:05artificial intelligence algorithms that,
- 9:09need to be experimented with and proven, and,
- 9:12we're looking at at taking advantage of that
- 9:14that functionality as well. Again,
- 9:17hoping to take advantage of what is provided
- 9:20through our core vendors,
- 9:22but then also have some discussions about supplementary
- 9:26interventions that that may not be provided yet
- 9:28by by those vendors.
- 9:30That's helpful to understand. Thank you for digging
- 9:33a little bit deeper there. Now before we
- 9:35wrap up, I wanted to ask you a
- 9:36little bit about leadership.
- 9:38What advice would you give evolving leaders today,
- 9:40especially in the technology space? I know you
- 9:43touched on AI, but that's making a big
- 9:44difference, you know, across the board in health
- 9:47care and everything else. And so how do
- 9:49you, you know, talk, with leaders as they're
- 9:51thinking about growing their careers in the health
- 9:53care and technology space?
- 9:55Well, thanks for asking, Lauren. And as I've
- 9:58been reflecting, it it feels like it wasn't,
- 10:00very long ago, although it was thirty years
- 10:02ago that I was
- 10:04an intern and an applications analyst at at
- 10:06Mass General Brigham and kinda grew up there
- 10:09before coming here to MedStar Health to to
- 10:11be a CIO.
- 10:12And I I just think so much of,
- 10:15what leadership about is relationships.
- 10:17And particularly
- 10:19with clinicians, I find
- 10:21being able to listen to them and,
- 10:23be able to study their workflows and understand
- 10:25what their
- 10:27pain points are and how that they they
- 10:28work and then, adapting technology the best ways
- 10:31that can support them is is really important.
- 10:34But it's,
- 10:36you know, we we lead through teams,
- 10:40sub leaders that,
- 10:41manage a number of associates in in,
- 10:44information services.
- 10:46There are other,
- 10:48administrative leaders that,
- 10:50I need to relate to and and support,
- 10:53as we work through the allocation of resources
- 10:56because we can't do everything at once. Right?
- 10:58So,
- 10:59I I think that's so so important for
- 11:02for younger folks. I always took advantage of
- 11:04organizations like HIMSS and then later on when
- 11:06I became a CIO in Chime.
- 11:09I I think those are are really important
- 11:11ways to get education. There's so much digital
- 11:14online education now as well as the the
- 11:17conferences that happen. So
- 11:20I find, I found in in in my,
- 11:23coming up as a leader participating in those
- 11:25organizations
- 11:26and
- 11:27maybe experimenting with different types of leadership that
- 11:29you wouldn't use at your home shop and
- 11:31learning that way was, also really important.
- 11:35I love that, Scott. Thank you so much
- 11:36for your time today. This has been such
- 11:38a helpful conversation. I I really appreciate the
- 11:41opportunity to speak with you, and I look
- 11:42forward to connecting you again soon.
- 11:44Thanks, Laura.
