- 0:02Those wheels are squeaking a bit grips. They could sell him a little oil.
- 0:08You twisted all muster. I've decided to protect myself ever since I was
- 0:17attacked in my office by an unidentified as seilant four Finger Discount dude, Welcome
- 0:38to four Finger Discount. I am Dana not joined by a guy this week.
- 0:42Although as sad as that is, I am very excited because today I
- 0:45am going to be discussing one of my favorite episodes of The Simpsons of all
- 0:48time. It is who shot Mister Burns? Past one and two? And
- 0:51I thought, since guys not here, who better to discuss the most notorious
- 0:55crime in the history of Springfield than those lovely gentlemen from I could Murder a
- 0:59podcast, one of the UK's most popular true crime podcast. Now, firstly,
- 1:03if I sound tired during this episode, it's because when I recorded this
- 1:07it was about five am or six am. I can't quite remember the actual
- 1:10time. All I know is that when I looked at the window, the
- 1:11sun still wasn't up, and someone's barely up by the time we finished.
- 1:14So it was pretty exhausting, but it was a hell of a good time,
- 1:17a lot of fun. Ben and Tom are huge Simpsons fans. Unfortunately,
- 1:19producer Dan didn't join us, since I've heard he didn't really watch the
- 1:23Simpsons as a kid. There's always one. Seriously, though you're kind of
- 1:27really enjoyed this review, we do a deep dive on the episode itself,
- 1:30covering all the clues that were put in there, as well as just the
- 1:34overall hype and build up to finding out just who shot mister Burns and then
- 1:38we found out it was the baby. Don't forget though. If you're a
- 1:42fan of true crime, check out I could Murder a podcast at icmap dot
- 1:46co dot uk or anyway you find your podcast would be Spotify, iTunes,
- 1:49whoever you funny podcasts, you can check them out I could Murder a podcast.

- 2:07Speaking of the Hill, the movie Guys, and so much more. But
- 2:08for now, sit back and enjoy my chat with Ben and Tom from Ark
- 2:13Commeda a podcast as we review who shot mister Burns. He produced. Dan
- 2:23didn't have much of a childhood and doesn't really know much about the Simpsons.
- 2:24Yeah, he didn't watch the Disney A tour as a kid and Simpsons,
- 2:29and yeah, he seemed to be quite outdoors kid, I think. But
- 2:31how are we doing anyway, guys? So you know your podcast seems to
- 2:34be kicking all sorts of goals at the moment. Yeah, no, it's
- 2:37we're doing really well. We're doing really well. We're just in the middle
- 2:39of a series nine at the moment, but we've been kind of all over
- 2:43the world with it in terms of the different cases we've covered. We spent
- 2:46some time in New Zealand. I don't know if that's a good thing or
- 2:49a bad thing. And yeah, no, it's going really well. We
- 2:53can't help as soon as we first started speaking with you. We're so happy
- 2:57to actually finally make this happen because it's being on the agenda for what feels
- 3:00like a couple of years, and we really appreciate you being up at god
- 3:06knows what hour to have this call of us. I mean, six o'clock
- 3:08is much better last week it was gonna end up being five o'clock and then
- 3:12we changed the time to a seven am for me, and then these guys
- 3:15move their clocks back or forwards or something, and then it became six o'clock
- 3:17and I was like, I'm happy with this. It'll work. It'll work.
- 3:21We're doing it now, so I'm more happy. But yeah, so
- 3:23your podcast, what made you guys want to start your podcast? Like,
- 3:28where did your passion for podcasting begin? Well back in the day, big
- 3:31fan of Ricky Gervais and all their podcasts early day stuff, were listening to
- 3:36that all the time. In regards to what started our own one off was
- 3:40basically it was Lockdown. We were we bought VR headsets, thought we'll do
- 3:46a VR headset podcast, which just copying someone else's idea basically, and then
- 3:50we realized we were getting travel sick from playing the games and we work couldn't
- 3:53really handle it. So then I made a pun name, and we thought
- 3:55that's quite a good pun name, and then we kind of forced the podcast
- 4:00that of the name, So the name came first before the podcast really and
- 4:02then yeah, we just kind of did a little hobby with it and then
- 4:06stuck to it, produced it down and came on board and it became a
- 4:09lot more of an official operation. It's happened with us as well, where
- 4:13sometimes we just come up with a podcast now and we go but the name
- 4:15is too good to not do a podcast now, you kind of have to
- 4:17do it. Yes, definitely. I mean with ours, it's weird.
- 4:20We came up with our name, we released our first episode. Then a
- 4:24week later there was a thing called like a Murder a Cocktail and it was
- 4:27a true crime podcast, but it was a week after ours, So I
- 4:29feel like we were just just ahead of that one. Yeah, or you
- 4:33guys are kind of like a Bugs Life to Ants, where Ants thought,
- 4:38oh shit, we're gonna make this great movie, and then they saw Disney
- 4:41doing the same thing and they went, oh no, and Disney at least
- 4:43it a month earlier, and I were like, oh no. I watched
- 4:45Ants the other day. It's I still have a bit of a soft spot
- 4:48for it, but I'm happy to be considered the Bugs Life in that camp.
- 4:51I think I think we're doing quite well. You know, I never
- 4:54saw Ants, and I still to this day i've never seen Ants. I
- 4:57just remember I have this fun memory of going to the movie to watch The
- 5:00Bugs Life of my family and for some reason, whenever used to see the
- 5:02commercials for Ants. I thought that looks boring. It's all brown and dark,
- 5:06and her Bug's life was so colorful. I was. I was commenting
- 5:10on to you guys before we were on the air, like your cameras and
- 5:13your setup just looks so fancy where I'm so jealous. So I'm gonna be
- 5:17stealing your idea and getting your cameras. Love that, love that. No,
- 5:20I like trying to figure out everything that's behind you. I'm really intrigued.
- 5:26This is it? Is it? Yeah? This is just nineties.
- 5:30So do you guys have Tasos? Did you have Tasos and POGs POGs?
- 5:33Yeah, POGs Idepox Tower back in the day, and he's basically he's like
- 5:38a at the Ants version of Captain cave Man, isn't he? And the
- 5:42Bugs Life? Yeah that's true. Yeah, that is very very true.
- 5:45But how important do you think the video side of things has been to your
- 5:47podcast when it comes to marketing and things like that. So we've based on
- 5:53the subject matter of our of our podcast. We've actually found YouTube quite tricky
- 5:58to master. We have a really we're really lucky to have quite a loyal
- 6:02following, but in terms of actually getting content out there and getting pushed in
- 6:06the algorithm, because we literally have murder in our title as well, we
- 6:10tried rebranding to ICMAP. I don't know, Tom, You're more of an
- 6:15expert when it comes to those things, but it's it's difficult to get new
- 6:17eyes on the product, even though we're super happy once the eyes eventually do
- 6:20land. Yeah, we're finding outreach to be pretty problematic sometimes. Yeah,
- 6:27I think with ours, especially if you look at the real trennels that are
- 6:31thriving, it's people that get straight to the point that don't do any of
- 6:34the waffle at the beginning and they and sometimes it's people doing makeup whilst talking
- 6:40about true crime, whereas ours, we do a lot of waffle. Got
- 6:43a lot of tangents, and it seems to be our audience are either you
- 6:46know, we are a very keen audience, but they either I think we're
- 6:49a bit marlmighty in some aspects. I think that's a good thing though,
- 6:53because I found we've been doing this podcast for nine years now and a lot
- 6:57of the time people sort of say at the start, I mean, we
- 6:59aren't going to get to the Firewex factory, you know, too much waffling
- 7:00on, sort of talking about your own lives to get to the Simpsons.
- 7:03But nine years on I found our audience who have stuck with us. Now
- 7:08go. We actually just kind of enjoyed listening to you guys talk now as
- 7:11opposed to just the Simpsons. So I think you just got to establish your
- 7:15brand, establish what you are. You'll get your fans and the fans will
- 7:17love you for it. And I just enjoy this thing to you. Then
- 7:19you can brands off and do other stuff. And that was just enjoy it
- 7:21because you're doing it. Yeah. Absolutely, I accidentally got addicted to Do
- 7:27you remember the TV series Lost? That's another one of those shows where I
- 7:30still don't know how it ends. I hear the ending is terrible, but
- 7:32I see it on Disney Plus and I'm going, I'm gonna have to watch
- 7:35this one day. I never got caught up in the in the hooplwer of
- 7:39it all, but I still I'm gonna watch it one day. Yeah.
- 7:41They yeah, they kind of not to spoil it for you. They drove
- 7:43it off a cliff slightly towards the end. But I was doing some renovations.
- 7:46And I'm not a big podcast like an audio podcast person at all.
- 7:49I really like visual things. But I accidentally got addicted to a podcast entirely
- 7:56based on loss that was literally all in down to the two guys that were
- 7:59present it. Because I had already seen the show. I already knew what
- 8:01was going to happen, but it was was so invested in what they had
- 8:03to say, their opinions, their personalities. And yeah, it was called
- 8:07Getting Lost, and you get lost in the podcast. It's quite literally,
- 8:11so yeah, that side of things is super fun. Well where did your
- 8:15love for the Simpsons begin? We'll start with you. Then. I want
- 8:18to say I was about seven or eight years old, which would take it
- 8:20back to sort of mid nineties. It was it became like a religious thing
- 8:26for me and my dad and my brother Sky one around seven pm UK time,
- 8:31unless we were moving the clocks about. Actually, I think shows stayed
- 8:35the same, didn't they, even if your clock's changed, Which is a
- 8:37bit stupid of me, But it was usually Sandwich somewhere between Xena Warrior Princess
- 8:43and Hercules Legendary Adventures. And sometimes we were lucky enough to get kind of
- 8:48two episodes on the Trot, So it was kind of me, my dad,
- 8:50and my brother's sort of thing. And yeah, it stayed that way
- 8:54for like what ten years, fifteen years, And yeah, having re watched
- 9:00it now as an adult, even the first theme tune, all sorts of
- 9:05emotions came back that I was not expecting to feel, you know, recently.
- 9:09So yeah, still got a real big love for the show. And
- 9:13it's amazing how much of it holds weight still today. Yeah, the same
- 9:16as Ben really. But a little bit before that, I was at school
- 9:20and there's a kid that I wasn't overly fond of, and that he's the
- 9:24kind of kid when you play games, and we used to play pretending to
- 9:28be earth wem Gym and I would be Scuba earthworm Gym, and he was
- 9:31mad scientist earth wem Gym, which means he could just do anything. So
- 9:35really angered me. And one day he was talking to me, and I
- 9:39didn't really listen, or I must have misheard him just the beginning of what
- 9:41he was saying, but I didn't hear the fact he said he watched it
- 9:45on TV. I thought he was talking about his neighbor called the Simpsons,
- 9:50and then he was telling me all these things that I thought he was saying
- 9:52his neighbors had done, and I was just getting really angry because I was
- 9:54like, that's just such a lie. None of this happened. And then
- 9:56eventually I watched the show and I was like, oh, now it will
- 10:00make sense. And then yeah, it's same with Ben, like watching it
- 10:03on Sky Domino's Pizza had given you a fresh slice of family life in thirty
- 10:07minutes. I just remember all the adverts for it as well. And now
- 10:11even when I like watch back and binge it like all, I find myself
- 10:15memorizing lines and know what the lines are, even though I've probably only seen
- 10:18them like a handful of times when I was a lot younger, and repeats,
- 10:20but they really do stick with you, the lines. And I've got
- 10:24a creepy little collection as well in the back or Simpson figures if you can
- 10:28see them clearly. But I've got a little wall collection of going on with
- 10:31Simpson's characters. I've got you guys minimized or small so I can't quite make
- 10:35it out, but they're those words of Springfield figures. They're really good ones
- 10:37in like two thousand and Yeah, Yeah, I've got Water of Springfield,
- 10:41and I've got some Treehouse of Horror ones which are special edition ones, and
- 10:45then I've got Tom Petty one because I like Tom Petty and he was an
- 10:48anniversary thing. Perfect. Yeah. I remember when of those Words of Springfields
- 10:52came out. Mom was like, I'm not paying twenty five dollars, be
- 10:54tore, you just not getting them. And I look back now and I
- 10:56think, man, I wish I had collected those, because they were like
- 10:58fifty dollars each of them in there packets still now, if not more.
- 11:01But they're just so great. I just there's never been Simpsons action figures like
- 11:03them since, and I'm just wish i'd re released them. They're all that
- 11:07re rereleasing stuff now, so I feel like twentieth aniversary, we should do
- 11:09it. Yeah, definitely. I mean, yeah, I mind New habit
- 11:13is getting drunk and then go on a eBay forgetting what I've ordered from it
- 11:16and then just getting a package and then my wife being like, well,
- 11:20why he's just putting them in the box and I'm not going to have them
- 11:22all out. Originally, I was just collecting the weird ones like Larry Burns
- 11:24and Homer's brother herd and I was like, because they're just cool and a
- 11:28bit like and then suddenly I was buying one. So I don't really like
- 11:30that one, but I need it, so I was just going to buy
- 11:31it. Yeah, I'm yeah, yeah, it's very addictive. I've got
- 11:35two stories. So there's one guy in Australia here selling the complete collection that
- 11:39the playsets and all the locations in a giant tub, none of them opened
- 11:45for fifteen hundred US. I saw at Australian dollars, which is about seven
- 11:48hundred and fifty pound, So it's not that much money really when you think
- 11:52it's the entire collection. And my wife was just like, you don't need
- 11:56it, and I was like, eh, you're right, I don't need
- 11:56it. And then now we look back and think if only. But the
- 12:00big one for me is, I've said it on the podcast before. You
- 12:01know the movie display, the big life size Simpsons that you've seen on the
- 12:05couch lot that the cinema display for the movie Simpsons movie you've ever seen those?
- 12:09Yeah, yeah, I've got the bar here. So the barn was
- 12:11about five foot tall. The Homer would have been like eight foot tall.
- 12:15Anyway, this guy in Adelaide, Australia, about a seven hour drive from
- 12:18where I live. He was going to sell it to me for eight hundred
- 12:20Australian dollars, was about four hundred pound and Nicola and my wife was going
- 12:24no where to put it, It's going to be too big. And I'm
- 12:26like, oh yeah, whatever, won't do it. And one sold in
- 12:28Australia for twenty five thousand dollars recently and I never let her forget it.
- 12:35Wow. Wow, So if you see this stuff by it, guys definitely
- 12:39worth it. I was about to brag about Tom. Do you remember the
- 12:43life size cut out of Moses Lack that my brother got me? Yeah?
- 12:48Yeah, that was the first background we probably stopped what we moved away from
- 12:54home, and we probably stopped watching him for three or four years. And
- 12:56then all of a sudden, my twenty first birthday, my brother arrives with
- 12:58the biggest flat package I've ever seen, which, again out of contact,
- 13:03sounds awful, and it was a life sized cutout of Mo's my favorite character,
- 13:07and then very quickly made its way to Tom's house. And now I
- 13:11just have the only piece of Simpson's memorabilia I've got is a little mo put
- 13:16your mug on my mug, which I'm very fond of. Short and simple.
- 13:20It's good though, Yeah, so you need sometimes I've actually, speaking
- 13:24of this episode, I've got the original Simpson's Mystery Sweepstakes competition from seven to
- 13:28eleven in the States, the four cups. I couldn't find them something.
- 13:31I think that I cleaned up the studio recently. I think I packed him
- 13:33in the box. But yeah, I've got the four original cups from seven
- 13:37to eleven back in like nineteen only five or ninety six, whenever this episode
- 13:39was. But yeah, wow, what are your memories of the of this
- 13:43episode, because I remember the hype of this one being huge in the school
- 13:46yard when I was a kid, because I'm well, I'm thirty five.
- 13:48I don't know how you guys are. But when this episode came out,
- 13:50I was right in the peak sort of like age for this show and we're
- 13:56all about it, and there was just there was so much hype for this
- 13:58episode. Was it was a much hype in the UK for it. I
- 14:01can't really remember people chatting about it that much. I mean I remember watching
- 14:05it when it came out and being like gripped by it. Simpsons is odd.
- 14:11I think there has a cool, massive audience over here, but I
- 14:13don't remember much conversations between friends and being like, I think it's just it
- 14:18was a given to everyone watched The Simpsons, and everyone loved the Simpsons,
- 14:20but it wasn't the thing that you end up speaking about overly. But I
- 14:24been watching it back this time around, I was like, it's so good.
- 14:28There's so many good jokes do it as well, which I've forgotten about.
- 14:30You kind of forget about the little jokes and throw away jokes, but
- 14:33it's just so good. They're right in. At this stage of the Simpsons,
- 14:35I think is like top tier. Do you find even though it's available
- 14:37on Disney Plus now, that you even go back and watch the show anymore?
- 14:41Because when I grew up, we watched it three or four times a
- 14:43day. And even though I do a podcast on The Simpsons now, maybe
- 14:46because it feels kind of like work, but I very rarely just put on
- 14:48The Simpsons just to have it on the background anymore. And that used to
- 14:50be my life. The Simpsons were just always on. I'm kind of introducing
- 14:54I've got two some more kids, three and five now, so I'm kind
- 14:56of introducing them to the Simpsons. But I find it really watch the show
- 15:00as much as I should anymore. How about you, guys. So I
- 15:03watched it for the first time in a row, so we're just a few
- 15:07months younger than you, and I watched the show for the first time in
- 15:09maybe twenty years last week in prep for tonight. Years. Yeah, which
- 15:15is scary, but as Tom said, it totally held It totally holds up
- 15:20some of the Mister Burns. I'm sure we'll go into it. Mister Burns
- 15:24makes a comment I couldn't believe it came out of his mouth, which I
- 15:26would have heard twenty years ago, but I didn't know what he was I
- 15:30should have probably known what he was talking about, but I didn't. And
- 15:33I think for us, it's similar to as you mentioned, if I used
- 15:37to just binge true crime series on Netflix YouTube, but now it kind of
- 15:41feels like work, and so if I want something on the background, it's
- 15:46a break from that. I'll put something a bit lighter on. Whereas watching
- 15:48Who Shot Mister Burns one and two, I left it on and had seven
- 15:52or eight episodes afterwards where it was just like, Okay, it's so easy
- 15:56to just it brings back a lot of memories, but also you're watching it
- 16:00from a completely different perspective now, which is fantastic. I've had a big
- 16:03binge on nostalgic stuff, and like Simpsons, I did like when I got
- 16:07the Disney Plus start watching all of that. I find what Simpsons is one
- 16:10of my go to still like. I think Disney Plus was a game changer
- 16:12in terms of having it available, But like Ben true crime stuff, I
- 16:17find it like it does feel worky Ben saying that you said you put quite
- 16:21a few horrifying things on to get to sleep in bed, which I couldn't.
- 16:23That's true. But I also did hold a boy Mets World and Home
- 16:29Improvement. I had a big kind of nostalgia hype recently. Boy Mets World
- 16:33is probably nearly counselorable now after the Nickelodeon documentary though, But apart from that,
- 16:38Yeah, I find this one great. Yeah, I'm glad you want
- 16:41of Home Improvement. It's one of those shows I feel like it never gets
- 16:44enough love. I was a kid loved Home Improvement, but none of my
- 16:47friends liked it, and I was like, I love this show. And
- 16:48when it came on Disney Plus, I I was so happy. Yeah,
- 16:52I love Home Improvement, and I think same with Boy Meants World. I
- 16:56think Boymans World Go is a bit underappreciated, and I do think even though
- 16:59some of the storyline are just like insane, there's still a good core message
- 17:03on most of the episodes. Mister Phoenie still has some good things to say.
- 17:07And your Home Improvement, I thought, I think it's great. I
- 17:10think that's really it's actually really funny, and there's loads of adult jokes in
- 17:12that, which I didn't get until watching it a few more this time around,
- 17:15I feel like I keep the Simpsons in my life more so now through
- 17:18memes and like our social media, the Simpsons just lives on through gifts and
- 17:23just memes, meme pages as opposed actually going and watching it. Now it's
- 17:26just like that's the new life the Simpsons has. Now it's in our lives
- 17:30every day, but we use it in mean form. There's so much of
- 17:33it on our feed mainly well, I think it's because we're connected with each
- 17:37other, but we see so many of yours absolutely blow up on Facebook and
- 17:41X. But then also now because we're engaging with them, there's so many
- 17:45other I think our Facebook is instead of true crime, it's it's mainly the
- 17:48feed is Simpsons memes, which is great, but there's yeah, there's there's
- 17:53so many of We got so many people there they say I liked one of
- 17:56your photos. Now all I see is Simpsons memes. Couldn't be the case.
- 18:00It's crazy how the algorithm works, though, because you could put a
- 18:03post out and it might only reach three four hundred thousand people, and I
- 18:07put out a photo that's not that different and it's like, oh hey,
- 18:08ten million. Okay. Then just today Facebook just decided to boost this post.
- 18:14Okay, Facebook is murder. Facebook is. It's so hard to predict
- 18:17what's going on and where. And I think, yeah, Ben's right in
- 18:18terms of us having the word murder in most of our things, that doesn't
- 18:22help. Yeah, it certainly wouldn't. I wouldn't assume so no, but
- 18:26I'll give you that though. I told my wife, Nicola, who's English,
- 18:29she's from Boston, Lincolnshire, she said that I told her the name
- 18:32of your podcast, and she just packed up laughing. She's like, great
- 18:34title. Love that love that. She's like, I can murder a podcast,
- 18:37me, I can murder a podcast me. She says, Yeah.
- 18:41A super proud moment was when if you put I could murder in the UK.
- 18:45First thing was pint, second thing was curry, and we eventually made
- 18:48it to the third thing, which we're super happy about. So we got
- 18:52among the beers and the curry, which is yeah, it's a good Yeah,
- 18:56it's three staples of life, right podcast, beer curry. But do
- 19:02you guys know about all the height that was going into this episode? In
- 19:04the States, they called it the one eight hundred Collect Mystery sweep Steaks since
- 19:08the Mystery sweep Stakes contest which I mentioned earlier. The cups for that I
- 19:11own, but basically it was one hundred Collect we're trying to steal some customers
- 19:15from I think it was like at and T anyway, like, so basically
- 19:18one eight hundred Collect Call had a competition that if you use their service,
- 19:22you would go into a competition and try and guess who the murderer was.
- 19:26And if you guessed the right person and they were the first and you were
- 19:27the first one to be discovered that guess the right person, you would be
- 19:30drawn into The Simpsons. And apparently it was just a complete shammuzzle because for
- 19:36some reason we look back now and you think that's an awesome prize. But
- 19:38people weren't all that interested in being drawn into the Simpsons in like nineteen ninety
- 19:41five. But they went through a thousand entries and they found that nobody guessed
- 19:47Maggie. And I think it was David Murkin that one of the producers at
- 19:49the time said, look, we've got to keep going until we can find
- 19:52that's to guess the correct person. And but no, the rule was for
- 19:56a competition in those days that you must find a winner in the first thousand
- 20:00entries, and because nobody guessed Maggie, that had to just randomly pick somebody
- 20:04and it was some woman who doesn't even watch the Simpsons. So she took
- 20:07a non disclosed cash amount as opposed to being drawn into the Simpsons. Wow
- 20:11wow, Because when Tom was mentioning that it wasn't really big news over here
- 20:15on the school grounds, and I remember him rightly that they made numerous trailers
- 20:19about these episodes, particularly the second one, because I'm sure I remember seeing
- 20:22the trailers, like teaser trailers around who did it? I remember seeing those
- 20:26in the UK, but I could be wrong. There was a lot of
- 20:30promo going into it, but I think just because it was the season premiere
- 20:32as well, they had a lot of time to sort of boost it and
- 20:33promote it as well. Maybe, but I remember being a huge deal here
- 20:37in Australia. I do remember. It wasn't spoiled for me, thankfully.
- 20:41But I've done research and I've been told by people who are a bit older
- 20:44than me that one of the more famous radio DJs at the time spoiled it
- 20:48because we were behind in getting things from the States, spoiled on the radio
- 20:52and lost his job because it was that big of a deal. Wow,
- 20:56that's terrible. So I remember the last time that happened in Australia, a
- 20:59radio dj, his job was spoiling. Something was spoiling the ending to well
- 21:03spoiling. I won't even say it on the podcast, but the big death
- 21:04in Harry Potter, No, the big one, the really important one,
- 21:08because they got the book that morning and just told him what happened at the
- 21:11end on the radio that day. And yeah, they would ever hurt again,
- 21:14but they could be dead. You could be doing a podcast on them
- 21:18eventually. Wow, that's crazy. Well, I mean even on the rewatch
- 21:22here, I had such a keen eye out for what's Maggie up to?
- 21:26What's she doing? And from the from the first episode, it's really she's
- 21:30she's acting pretty Maggie. There are clues, though, did you notice the
- 21:33clues? I kept my eye. I think I got one of them.
- 21:37Possibly, But yeah, what was that? What do you say? It
- 21:41was bart Well Bart on the second. It was Bart's chalkboard on the second.
- 21:45And then there was also a photo in the background of Maggie in a
- 21:52scene where Homer was losing his mind. I believe could be wrong. There
- 21:56was a photo that looked like it was bolded up slightly. Well, the
- 22:00big one that they put in there that no one was paying attention to.
- 22:02It was just a clock, but all the clocks were set to three pm
- 22:06at the time at the end of the episode, and the clue was that
- 22:11at three pm. Smither says, I never miss Pardon My Zinger, which
- 22:14airs at three pm, and he left the town meeting early to go watch
- 22:17Pardon My Zinger, so he wasn't there when birds got shot. But of
- 22:19course when I was a kid, it was either going to be Smithers or
- 22:22it was Homer. That was just because you don't think logically when your kid,
- 22:25it's like, it's going to be the obvious one. And I remember
- 22:27when my sister I were first watching this, will sit there with a little
- 22:30notepad and we had our predictions. My sister guests home and I guess Smithers
- 22:33and I was Adam, it was going to Bess Smithers. And I do
- 22:36remember when I found out it was Maggie. I was really deflated as a
- 22:40kid. Were you guys disappointed with the result when you I'll look back now
- 22:42and just laugh because it's just ridiculous, But at the time, I remember
- 22:45thinking that was so silly. I guess, yeah, I know what you
- 22:48mean. I think the bit that watching it back now with fresh eyes and
- 22:52knowing like my lingers like, oh, when earlier in the episode, the
- 22:56first episode, mister Burns was still condy from a baby, that bit really
- 23:00was like, oh, that's a precursor in terms of what's going on as
- 23:03well. But then yeah, I think, I guess the only reason that
- 23:06it makes sense for Maggie is they can get away of not punishing her and
- 23:08not having her like because if they have any of their other characters doing it,
- 23:11it's going to have to have a bit more of a bit more of
- 23:14a result that or it could be a freaway character. You don't want one
- 23:15of your favorite characters going to prison for murder. You don't want that.
- 23:21I was super worried for Moe at one point. Yeah, or Willy didn't
- 23:23want Willie in trouble. Yeah, yeah, no. But the show runners
- 23:27that they weren't running the show in season six, but they took over in
- 23:30seven and eight. Bill Locally and Josh Weinstein. They wanted Barnie, and
- 23:34originally they were like pushing for Banne. It's got to be Barnie. He's
- 23:37got to be Barnie and James L. Brooks and make Granny one. Now,
- 23:41it's gonna be one of the Simpsons. It'll be funnier that way,
- 23:42Like how are we gonna work around this? And they come up with the
- 23:45idea of Maggie and even they agree they're back now and go it was the
- 23:48right option because then we wouldn't have had Barnie. Okay, you know,
- 23:52so it was it was the logical choice because you needed a character who you
- 23:56can just go, nah, we're not going to arrest her. She's just
- 23:57a baby, and that's it. You can just move on. But I
- 24:00do like the whole idea of just the cliffhanger, because I've never done it
- 24:04since. I think that's just what built it up so much, the fact
- 24:07that it was just big, huge cliffhanger and it was a take off of
- 24:10I'm sure you guys heard of the Dallas who shot Jr? Story from the
- 24:12eighties in America. Yeah, yeah, so it was a take off of
- 24:15that, and clearly it worked. Yeah, so it was I think that
- 24:18did a really good job. Have you ever seen the actual episode, not
- 24:22the episode, but just the scene of who shot Jr? And the big
- 24:25reveal and all that kind of stuff. I watched it last night for the
- 24:27first time. It's no, I haven't. It is so nineteen eighty and
- 24:30corny, but apparently it's like one of the most watched TV shows of all
- 24:33time. The other thing I say about the Barney thing you just mentioned,
- 24:37I listened to the podcast you did with Brendan and like, you kind of
- 24:40put Simpsons in a new light for me about talking about Homer being a terrible
- 24:44dad and being an alcoholic and stuff, and like, do you think Barney
- 24:48is kind of promoting that kind of life as well? And in terms of
- 24:51like so it kind of like makes me look at I've looking at Simpson's characters
- 24:55a bit more of a serious adult level now because of you guys talking about
- 24:59it. We'll see. The thing is, when I was, you know,
- 25:02the Golden Year episodes, Homer was held accountable for his actions, right.
- 25:06I think that my grant with the later seasons is that Homer's just a
- 25:08dick to everybody, and very rarely is he held a cannibal. It's just,
- 25:11oh, silly Homer, that's just Homer's ways, and mar just forgives
- 25:15him because the story needs her to. And I think that's the stuff that
- 25:19annoys me. In the later episodes just feels like lazy writing, or at
- 25:22least back in the older episodes, it feels like when he did something wrong,
- 25:26it was never that heinous, and he always by the end of it
- 25:29sort of went, oh, you know what I screwed up? You know
- 25:32my bad were in the later what to season eighteen, now it's just as
- 25:37they call it, jerk ass home and just Homer just being a dick for
- 25:38it, almost like he became Peter Griffin to an extent. I think the
- 25:41family guy sort of popularity took over the Simpsons a little bit. Yeah,
- 25:45okay, that makes sense. Yeah, I don't. I don't mean I
- 25:48found it very hard to watch recent Simpsons. I can only binge to a
- 25:51certain point, and then I kind of find myself stopping and going back to
- 25:53the beginning rather than carrying on. Well, also, drop off for you,
- 25:56many say season ten was when a lot of people dropped off. I
- 26:00remember dropping off about season fifteen. I remember one episode I can't remember.
- 26:04You can't tell you what series it was. I think as the last good
- 26:07one I remember was when Seymour's in Okay a bag for balls and he says
- 26:12about the Hampstead chewing for his ball sack, and I think that's the last
- 26:15one I remember being quite good. What about you, Ben, what was
- 26:18your job off? Can you remember it wasn't that we just decided to stop
- 26:22watching the show. We just sort of happened organically. Yeah. Yeah,
- 26:26so I'm guessing I couldn't give you the series, but I can give you
- 26:29the year. Would have been kind of around fifteen sixteen years old, So
- 26:33what the early two thousands, I guess. But then, yeah, going
- 26:40back to I've not actually seen I've seen a lot of criticism of recent series
- 26:45online. I haven't watched it, but I can. I've I can understand
- 26:51what they've done with Homer. Whereas the episodes I watched as a kid,
- 26:55I learned a lot from home as mistakes, from Bart's mistakes, from the
- 26:57things they did wrong, and that was a good way to learn about life.
- 27:00I mean, even some of the more when you asked us to sort
- 27:04of talk about our marathon, I've gone for ones that actually emotionally kind of
- 27:08resonated with me at the time as well, because although old Homer was an
- 27:12idiot, he kind of ultimately ended up doing the right thing at the end
- 27:17of the day, although he did three or four bad things, really wrong
- 27:21things in the build up to that. Ultimately you learn your lesson. But
- 27:25yeah, I can't remember the specific cut off point unfortunately, but I'm definitely
- 27:30after jumping back in ready to binge again. So we'll see how far I
- 27:33go. It's interesting that you brought up how the Simpsons sort of influenced how
- 27:37we sort of went about our lives. I feel like now with kids,
- 27:38I've got two, like I said, three in a five year old,
- 27:41it's bluey for them, and they're only seven minute episodes. But I think
- 27:45Australians or it helps they can relate to it in that aspect because they were
- 27:48Australian kids. But I watch it now and I go, this is how
- 27:52I felt when I watched The Simpsons, and they sort of quotes from the
- 27:56show they bring into their real life and it's actually teaching them nice messages.
- 28:00And I think this is always It's almost like a modern day Simpsons to an
- 28:03extent. Bluey the kids are obsessed with it. They all talk about it,
- 28:06they all love their old quoting. I'm like, Bluey has become the
- 28:07new Simpsons. It's crazy. But can you watch Bluey and enjoy it?
- 28:11Bluey is fantastic, mate, if you it's honestly, I think as a
- 28:15parent you appreciate it more. But I watch that show and go, holy
- 28:21shit, this is literally my life and this is just And I think that
- 28:23was the appeal of the Simpsons was they appeal to just the normal families.
- 28:27You watch it and go, this is just us in animated form. And
- 28:30that's what Bluey is like. Granted I'm Australian, so a lot of it,
- 28:33a lot of it. I watch it, I go, that's that's
- 28:36us. That's Aussi's I think that's where it relates to its aspect. But
- 28:38there's a lot of it where you know, there's an episode of Blue.
- 28:41I won't get too much on Blue, but there is one where it's about
- 28:45a kid who is a bit further behind in a blooey. She doesn't walk,
- 28:48she shuffles her bum on the floor and it's like, haha, funny.
- 28:51But then they show the side of the parent who when she goes to
- 28:52mother's group and all her kids are the other kids are walking around in hers
- 28:56isn't she feels like she's failing as a mother. So they bring in that
- 28:59side of it. Whether adults can watch the show and relate to it as
- 29:02well, so it's actually like the people are bluey. It's just to show
- 29:04the kids watch but there's actually a great show if you give it a chance.
- 29:07Yeah. I ended up about six months ago, so I'm Another character
- 29:14that I'm really fond of is Santa's Little Helper. I've got three greyhounds over
- 29:17here, and six months ago we got a puppy and red online that Blue
- 29:22is a great show to put on for dogs because apparently the colors are the
- 29:26color palette is I could be again wrong here, but is a color that
- 29:30dogs can actually slightly distinguish, so we put it on and all three of
- 29:33them staring at the TV could be the audio as well. But apparently there's
- 29:37something to do with the color choices that they have and I'm colorblind, so
- 29:41awful kind of a metric for you, But yeah, they were hooked.
- 29:45They were all watching the TV and I thought it wasn't a half bad show.
- 29:49That's just the same. And the Simpsons they chose yellows that when you're
- 29:52flicking through all the stations, you'd stop on yelly because yellows stood out it
- 29:56wasn't normal. Yeah that makes sense. Yeah, anyway, what were your
- 29:59favorite moment from who shot mister Burns before we skimmed through the ad the episode?
- 30:02Any stand up moments for you? The Burns comment, It's really stuck
- 30:07with me because I was actually shocked that he said it when he makes a
- 30:11comment about his his slanted let me, I actually made a note of exactly
- 30:17how he said it. So first he has Burn's construction code building a better
- 30:19tomorrow for him in block capitals, and then he's still annoying Smithers. Smithers
- 30:27when he compares his slant drilling company to a man about to do something when
- 30:33he says, this is almost sexual, isn't it? And Smither's just looks
- 30:36so uncomfortable, which was really shocked that they came out of Burns's mouth.
- 30:40But there's so many jokes at Smither's expensive you wouldn't get away with it now
- 30:44on television, but you know, in nineteen ninety five hours hilarious, it
- 30:48was so good, so good, and the amount of times that Burns was
- 30:52either unwilling or unable to address Homer by his full name or knew who he
- 30:56was. And the chocolate sequences amazing, the chocolate gift and so so good.
- 31:03I remember that being using the promos a lot when Homer does when he
- 31:06he swears, you don't hear it, but when he swears that was the
- 31:07big selling point in the trailers for the episode. Yeah, the church bells.
- 31:12Yeah, yeah, what about you? Tom? What's what's that for
- 31:17you? What were your favorite moments? So any moments where you're watching it
- 31:18going oh shit, I completely forgot about that. That's great. Yeah,
- 31:22even the school like kind of hitting oil. I always enjoy when a skinner's
- 31:25getting getting near full as well, and then even when he's hearing everyone's lousy
- 31:29requests for what they want for the for the money, and then when Smithers
- 31:33does the Tannoy voice and he guess, we haven't got a tannoy and then
- 31:37and then it Burns comes in and yeah, Burns stressed up in that way.
- 31:41Yeah, it's it's I don't know, I just had so many easing,
- 31:42isn't it in comparison to what I remembered? And I think probably like
- 31:47yeah, comparing it to future day ones, is they don't explain the joke.
- 31:51The joke's good enough as it is, and it's just there and it's
- 31:52done, which which I appreciate. It lets you do a bit of figuring
- 31:56out as well, sometimes raft than spelling everything out for you. But name
- 32:00yes, Homer, that bands of the chocolate scene I really enjoyed, and
- 32:04just the graduate to get more and more angry. But yes, it's it's
- 32:08mainly oh yeah, I think the Smithers Smithers bits in the episode that we
- 32:13were really funny. I'm glad you brought up when Skinner was getting yelled at
- 32:15there by Charmers, because Charmers is one of those characters as a kid,
- 32:17I just thought it was just this mean guy. But I find the older
- 32:21you get, the people like that has become more relatable because it's almost like
- 32:23Charmers represents the as if a real person went into this world of Springfield and
- 32:28went, what the hell is going on here? He represents a normal person.
- 32:31And I just find there's a lot of episodes of Charmers. And there's
- 32:35an episode called I don't know what it's called where missus Kate and Skinner first
- 32:37hook up. As a kid, I was like, this is a boring
- 32:40episode. But when you you know you've aged and you've been through through relationships
- 32:45and whatnot, episodes like that just resonate with you more. It's fine.
- 32:47It's amazing how the Simpsons can appeal to you on a whole new level.
- 32:50Because you said you haven't watched the show in twenty years, Ben, but
- 32:52I feel like if you go back and watch those Golden Ear episodes, now
- 32:54you relate to it on a whole different level. For sure. For sure,
- 32:58there was an episode where Bart gets yanked out of a photo and he
- 33:02does something to what he steals, I believe, and really upsets his Mind's
- 33:06been not pre as one of my favorite episodes. Yeah, yeah, it's
- 33:08in yes, yeah, yeah, And I remember again at the time,
- 33:12even being a kid and watching it. I'm sure I react differently now,
- 33:15but I remember that emotionally that really resonated with me when I watched it,
- 33:20and I'm sure, yeah, I'm sure watching back and all the different thing
- 33:22again to go back to home, are doing the wrong things the fishing,
- 33:25the fishing episode, Yeah, I definitely I am ready now to do a
- 33:31rebinch missus k when you're older. I think missus Kay has always been the
- 33:35Fox of the Simpsons in my opinion, Like as a kid, like she's
- 33:37just this old teacher, but then when you know you're thirty five, you're
- 33:39like, she's hot. Shit. I think the word to describe is she
- 33:45just seems fun. She's up for whatever. Yeah, she's up listening.
- 33:52All right, let's skim through the episode. Show. So the original air
- 33:54of part one was May twenty first, nineteen ninety five, written by Bill
- 34:00Oklin Josh Wainstein. As we're part one and two, little, let's touch
- 34:01on it actually, so getting to write this episode, what a gig that
- 34:06would have been. I wanted they appreciated it at the time, I'm sure
- 34:08they did, because I was huge Simpsons fans before they've enjoined the show.
- 34:12But being able to say that, you know, you and your best mate
- 34:14wrote who shot mister Burns? That must have been so much fun to have
- 34:16that kind of power at the time. Would you would you have said they
- 34:20had complete freedom in terms of the or were they given the suspect beforehand?
- 34:23Do you know they wanted Barney so that they wanted the other guys that wanted
- 34:27Barney And they were told by James Brooks, who you know, genius that
- 34:30it has to be a member of the Simpsons, and they were like,
- 34:32oh fuck, all right, how are we going to do that? And
- 34:34they weren't at Maggie, but I think they I said, they've reflected now
- 34:37and gone that's the right option. But I just think having that, having
- 34:40the ability and having their I think I'd be almost scared to write this one
- 34:44because it's like to be screwed up. It's that's it, You're don't no.
- 34:47What I liked about is it's just the layer in of it. And
- 34:51like I know, obviously they do it on purpose in terms of getting everyone
- 34:54to be a suspect, but they haven't it's all legitimate reasons why people are
- 34:58so pissed off. And then you he builds and bills, and you go,
- 35:00oh that makes sense. No, it makes sense if that happen,
- 35:02if he did it, And there's so well written in that aspect. But
- 35:05also with each situation, it's very humorous in terms of how they build out.
- 35:09But yeah, it must be. I would be very intimidated having to
- 35:14ride at the first two parts, especially for a series end around a series
- 35:16opener. That would be terrifying to me. But the episode kicks off with
- 35:22Skinner arriving at the school early morning, kind of like it is here,
- 35:24I'm looking outside the sun starting maybe to come up. Yeah, but I
- 35:29always loved the early morning vibe of The Simpsons, when it's just early morning,
- 35:31the sort of the music's playing, it's that the suns rise. He
- 35:35always looks cool, but he finds unfortunately Super Dude, who's been crushed by
- 35:37his own water bottle, so gets willing to bury him well. Sometime over
- 35:42the holiday weekend, the beloved Grade four Gerbil super Dude lost his life.
- 35:46I need you to air out the classroom and give super Dude a proper burial.
- 35:51Go. Yeah, like you had to getting a decent burial. Me
- 35:57on farther get through in the Bug. What's the thoughts on grand skip of
- 36:00Willie. I know you guys are Scottish, but in the UK do you
- 36:04guys like Willy in the context of The Simpsons. Absolutely? Yeah, absolutely,
- 36:15yeah, love with it. He was he was because there's not too
- 36:19many. I know there were some guest stars, but there's not There's not
- 36:21an outright continual British character. So Willy was Willy was? Yeah, very
- 36:28fondly regarded over here, Am I right? Tom? Yeah? I think
- 36:30so. No, no one was offended by the voice, Scottish voice or
- 36:35anything like that, and even the stereotypes I think. I think if it
- 36:37was an I think I'd be more taken offensive. If it was even Irish
- 36:40character in all the Irish gags, I think Scottish is fair game. Weirdly,
- 36:45that's why we feel so lucky here in Australia that we got a Golden
- 36:49era episode of The Simpsons in our country. We yet to go us at
- 36:52the way to like season fifteen or something to get in the UK, and
- 36:54I watched that one and go this episode just doesn't hit right. But we
- 36:58got you know, we got peaks, so we're always very cherished that and
- 37:01we'll never offended by the stereotypes. It's ridiculous. There's nothing like I mean,
- 37:05there are Australian isms in there, but they're just completely blown out of
- 37:07proportion. But we love that for that's that's the whole gag of the show.
- 37:10And that's why when I see people get angry about the stereotypes of the
- 37:14Simpsons, I just think that's comedy. Though. Yeah, I think the
- 37:16thing with it as well is just the fact that, yeah, if it
- 37:20was just a two D simple gag and then the character has nothing else to
- 37:22say, and then you know they're just a character that made the joke.
- 37:25But there's people. It's this characters do have like long storylines and all really
- 37:30deep storylines, you know, lessons with them as well. I think that's
- 37:32why I think it's a lot more acceptable because it's not just a two D
- 37:36cheap laugh. So he ends up striking oil, destroys the school and destroys
- 37:39Ralph in the process as well. Then we get mister Burns and he wants
- 37:43to send the parcel with the profit projections to Pete Porter in Pasadena overnight we
- 37:46get the montage of the male system at the bowl plant. Homer thinks he's
- 37:50doing the right thing by returning it to mister Burns, but it's a return
- 37:52addressed, of course. And this is where they established the story from mister
- 37:53Burns that he doesn't know his name, which I guess when you think of
- 37:58continuity, seems a bit ridiculous because we've had so many episodes with Burns and
- 38:01Homer up to this point already, but I'm willing to go with it.
- 38:05So, you know, Homer tries to tell him his name and he drops
- 38:07the So one killer is a thousand grams, isn't it? The thing that
- 38:09he drops in his head, which I've got here would shortly still hurt.
- 38:13Yeah, and it's pointed as well. I mean, I know it hits
- 38:15him with the flag, but there was one in free chance that was going
- 38:17to cause some real damage. But Skinner here he sees the destruction. This
- 38:21is where Charmers arrives. He's very, very angry, angry, but they
- 38:23now the rich to school in the state, so of course he's happy about
- 38:27that. They find Superdoo just throws him. Then Burns is now in his
- 38:30executive spa and we see the newspaper article which I love the headline awful school
- 38:34is awful rich and which is actually a nice sea plant for later in the
- 38:37episode when we have Skinner covering the word awful. But he Burns is jealous
- 38:43this. You know, how dare they have money? I want their money.
- 38:45So it gets Smith's to go another twenty miles on the on the bike
- 38:47whilst he plays pinball. You guys, fans of pinball, iast have a
- 38:52virtual pinball I had to sell it to pay for my son's surgery. But
- 38:54basically, a virtual pin wore machine is every pinball machine ever created, but
- 38:58it's done digitally and it's like on a TV. And he build it to
- 39:00look like a pinball machine. A lot of fun. I mean, it's
- 39:04not a real thing, but you just immerse yourself and yeah, it's pretty
- 39:07cool. The cheap, a cheap version of having every pinbor machine in the
- 39:09world. No, that's really cool. The only time we can. You
- 39:13can still find it over here in some arcades, but and maybe pubs,
- 39:16but I can't remember the last time I saw one. No, I haven't
- 39:21played pinball in a long time. I think i'd always gravitate towards House of
- 39:24Dead too with my coat. Yeah, but yeah, Pinball, Yeah no,
- 39:30I never really had to go on it to be fair, And I
- 39:31love that Burns. He's got it right next to his gym. It's funny
- 39:35you brought up a House of Dead there. That was the machine when I
- 39:37went to the arcade as a kid, and you had the curtain, and
- 39:39there's always the mystique of what's behind there. I don't forget the ones why
- 39:43I can't finally peep behind the curtain and it's just these zombies and shit,
- 39:45and I just never again. But it was always like you see, the
- 39:51grown up kids would go into this machine and the sanded terrifyings like I have
- 39:54to see what was behind the curtain. It was that dressic Park. I
- 39:57think dressed Park. I think I stuck with time crisis. Yeah, yeah,
- 40:00that's fair. But this is where Burns he gets into the elevator,
- 40:05blue liney Colonel Giermo, Hello, Oh, don't take it so hard,
- 40:14Homer. He's always scrowing up people's names. Yeah, the picnic. He
- 40:16thought my son Rinaldo was my son Rolando. Can you believe that? Then
- 40:21Skinner shows the newspaper to charmers, and we get the great payoff here of
- 40:24the unrelated article in the better headline. But Chalmer suggests that they should maybe
- 40:29should give everyone age a college scholarship. They all laugh about because of course
- 40:32that's not going to happen. They want the crystal bucket from a slot,
- 40:36water e and a pland new filthy blanket. The cafeteria staff is complaining about
- 40:44the mice in the kitchen. I want to hire a new staff. I'd
- 40:49like to start a jazz program for the music department. We've got a really
- 40:52great instruction line up, Judo, he's ready to give up the drudgery of
- 40:59the Profrnando second and settle into a nice teaching job. Man, it will
- 41:04be my pleasure. Lisa has told me all your students are as bright and
- 41:07dedicated to jazz as she is. Let's go now, mister Prenty. Chocolate
- 41:14microscopes, you know these guitars that are like double guitarres, you know more
- 41:20rubber stamps. Just you guys were awful, rich right. I'm not saying
- 41:23awful. Podcast is awful, rich Just you guys were awful, rich right.
- 41:27What would be the first thing you would buy? Do you think would
- 41:30you pay off family debt? Or is it now? They can wait?
- 41:32I'm going to buy something for myself first, walk you what are you buying?
- 41:36Then you've done your big purchases, haven't you really have? I really
- 41:39well, Tom's going to buy the World of Springfield figureut. But what about
- 41:44you? My heart says, immediately settle family, not settle family debt is
- 41:47in. We've incurd it on one another. But yeah, look after the
- 41:51family. I feel like i'd need some sort of statement purchase though, to
- 41:54announce yourself. Yeah. Yeah, Like I'm thinking straight away a big plot
- 41:59of land in or a big elaborate house. But I don't know that is
- 42:02that quick enough? You're you're gonna buy something that's not That makes no sense
- 42:06though, It's just ridiculous because I can afford to buy it. Like,
- 42:08what, what's what's your fun purchase? What's what's the one thing you look
- 42:10at and go, I'll never need that, but I'll always want it.
- 42:15Do you have one of those things? I don't. I No, I
- 42:19don't. I've always kind of wanted to put a giant I've always wanted like
- 42:22a giant fish tank. Call, so that would be an elaborate one,
- 42:24I guess, or like a room dividing, big ol' male giglow right,
- 42:28yes, yeah yeah, and and the old holes in the ceiling for me
- 42:30to dangle and crack my back. Yeah, but yeah, okay, we'll
- 42:35go with We'll go with giant fish tank and then women would pay you to
- 42:37give them pleasure. So great movie. That's such a great It's one of
- 42:44those movies that I loved when I was younger. And you I don't think
- 42:46I was even released on like physical media here because I loved I still buy
- 42:51blue rays and stuff, but I think you may have got a DVDY release.
- 42:52But I think they even bother put it on blue red, like no
- 42:54one likes this movie. And I was like, I like this movie.
- 42:58I remember the DVD cup. Isn't it like him sort of stretching by a
- 43:00lamp shade or like hurting himself on a lamp shade, or in Australia it
- 43:05was him peeping through a peep hole on the door. Oh nice, Oh
- 43:08cool? Yeah, but every country has their own different covers. But I
- 43:13think it might be on Disney Plus Action. Now that I say, I'm
- 43:15gonna have to go back and rewatch that movie. Now I'll watch you with
- 43:17you? And is that a shooting McGavin t shirt as well? Because I
- 43:21have heard that in the Happy Happy Gilmore two has in the works. Yeah,
- 43:23so yeah, Christopher Cameorry's last name because Christian er Donald is his name.
- 43:28The Glap Place shoot of Bagavin. He announced that Adam Sandler sent him
- 43:30a specscript potentially of Happy Gilmore two, which I don't It's one of those
- 43:36things where a lot of our listeners messages with me. I mentioned happ Gilmore
- 43:38all the time in the podcast, one of my favorite movies, and they
- 43:40go, are you excited for this? And I went, I will watch
- 43:44it, but I don't know whether I need it, because I just fear
- 43:46that it will never be able to live up to the nostalgia I have for
- 43:49the first one. I love Happy Gilmore. That was my definitely my favorite
- 43:52film for years and years and years. Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison was just
- 43:54the classic summer two punch on TV here in Australia every summer Billy Madison,
- 43:59Happy Gilmore back to back. Yeah, so good. And then we get
- 44:02as you mentioned earlier time with the intercom, I don't have an indacom or
- 44:05a secretary said to me, and we get mister Burns dressed up as Jimbo.
- 44:09Now there is a little clue in the back of the wall here where
- 44:12Skinners got a certificate because his name is w Seymour Skinner, so the W
- 44:17and the S also applies to Skinner in this episode. Yeah, they made
- 44:21sure to mention the W S and the background there, and the other thing
- 44:23too with him falling on the dial was he falls with W and S.
- 44:29Sure, and it's revealed to be M and S. But it's also three
- 44:30PM. That's the other three PM little clue that had in there as well.
- 44:35But it's revealed here that mister Burns is the one hundred and four year
- 44:37old man. I'm not sure if they mentioned his age before then, but
- 44:38one hundred and four years old. And he refuses to give him any money,
- 44:42so Burns tries to attack him. I was also thinking at the time
- 44:45that his age was announced just in this one episode that maybe that relates to
- 44:49him for getting Homer's name just on that occasion for some reason. But yeah,
- 44:54Burns, he tries to give him the old flailing arms attack, I'm
- 44:57going to get you, and then he calls which is just me fight exactly.
- 45:01And then yeah, the smith has kind of peppers in with a few
- 45:05staples, but I don't think any of them quite read him. But it's
- 45:07the family dinner and he didn't approve Bart's idea to revive the Three Stooges.
- 45:12And then we get Homer sad but not knowing his name, and Marge suggests
- 45:15the idea for the candy with the photo, which has a fantastic payoff,
- 45:19as you were mentioning earlier with home, I thinking he's getting the nice thank
- 45:22you letter, but no, his name wasn't mentioned in the car. But
- 45:24before we get to that moment, though, this is where we cut to
- 45:27Burns and he's using his binoculars to look around and sees his company about to
- 45:30drill and still all the oil from the school, and we get the famous
- 45:34light taking candy from a baby, which I guess is the big one,
- 45:37isn't it the big sort of clue? Which it's just a passing comment,
- 45:40but I think, you know, repeat viewings, you go, that's the
- 45:44one right there. Then we get the Oil Appreciation Day press conference and Lias
- 45:47it's about she turns on the pump, about to make them very very rich,
- 45:51and they realize there's no oil soon that myty apparatus will burst forth with
- 45:58its precious fluid most sexual listened to me, is all right oil. Skinner
- 46:20then says that we can't have anything that that I promised though, because you
- 46:22know, the oil doesn't belong to us, it belongs to who Ordia first,
- 46:24So unfortunately he's going to have to eliminate music and maintenance. Lisa then
- 46:29takes the call from Tito Puente, which were you guys a fan of?
- 46:31Like his guest appearance Tito in this I had no idea who he was as
- 46:35a kid. I still kind of don't really know who he is now,
- 46:37but I always enjoyed his song. I have no idea who he is at
- 46:39all, not a clue. Yeah, same same, but his music number
- 46:43was fun. A find way to kill like ninety seconds of the episode for
- 46:45them, Like, we can't be fucked writing this, just throwing a song
- 46:49I had. I had the Simpson CD for Christmas when I was young,
- 46:52So there's a lot of the songs that I often don't know what episode they're
- 46:55from, and then it will click in and oh, I know every word
- 46:59of this song just because the CDs to play as a kid. And I
- 47:01remember once from a charity shop buying the Simpsons Blue CD, the Blue CD,
- 47:05and that's terrible. See stinks, it's not great. It's got I
- 47:12think Do the Bartman might be on this, Do the Bartman on there?
- 47:14But that's about it, right, No, it's literally just the ones of
- 47:17their redub it old blue stuff and think it's of red cover. And I
- 47:21bought it for like a quid. I've got the vinyl here. I've listened
- 47:23to it once in a whek man that can just that can just stay there.
- 47:30But I think that that that sort of was the epitome of the Simpsons
- 47:35is so popular right now, let's just get whatever we can and slap the
- 47:37Simpsons face on it. And that just feels like one of those things where
- 47:39they went, yeah, we probably just went a little bit too far with
- 47:43that one. We thought people were going to appeal to the Simpsons singing the
- 47:45blues. But the songs in the Key of Springfield CD though, that was
- 47:47huge. That was like the soundtrack to my childhood. That one. I
- 47:51had all the songs from the show and things like that. Yeah, that's
- 47:53the one. Then how can you work for a man like mister Bangs,
- 47:59not a little bit. He did send me this nice thank you code mirch
- 48:01bite, Lisa and Maggie. Dad just doesn't have your name on it.
- 48:09It would you step out side for a second, Dear lord, that's the
- 48:20loudest profanity I have ever heard. Now Mo's is full of fumes, and
- 48:24he's dizzy, nauseous, and where's the inflated sense of self estee which is
- 48:28about to find Barney And they have to unfortunately close down the bar due to
- 48:31the fume. So Moe gets his shotgun, Barney gets his pistol, and
- 48:35now that he's got his sense of self esteem, then we get If you
- 48:38look on the background of the TV there too, there's an ad for pardonizing
- 48:42and it says it'll be on at three pm on the TV in Moe's as
- 48:45that scenes going on, not not sort of, it's just in the background,
- 48:47but if you if you know, it's there. Now the oil drilling
- 48:52causes the ground to collapse and the retirement castle has sins, which means pas
- 48:55moving with the Simpsons, Who the devil? You don't what are you talking
- 49:09about? Makes sense? Man? I can't. Oh you're a dead man.
- 49:17Oh you're dead. You're dead birds. As you said, they did
- 49:22a good job of building up everyone's reasoning for wanting to kill both. Even
- 49:24though Homer seems a bit ridiculous, you can still believe that Homer as we
- 49:29know him would still maybe go to that length because he seems so angry at
- 49:32least. Oh definitely this is that. I had this down as the third
- 49:36person to make a verbal threat on Burns in this episode already Home is the
- 49:39third. I think Willie and Smith, Willie and sorry Lisa. So Lisa
- 49:45was on the phone just before the biggest fuck in history and she says,
- 49:50yeah, I'd like to settle his hash. And I googled what does what
- 49:53does settle his hash mean? What does that? And I could not find.
- 49:58She says, settle his hatch, settle his god. Yeah, okay,
- 50:00good? Could hear it? Is she threatening him? Or is okay
- 50:09hat hatch makes a lot more sense. Yeah, But also I guess that
- 50:15means that Tito also made the threat, we just didn't hear him say it.
- 50:17Yeah, okay, so Homer is the fourth. I do I do
- 50:21think Mo and Balley brandishing weapons is also a kind of a threat. Very
- 50:24true. That's very, very true. I think Homer seems the angriest I
- 50:28have everyone, though easily he's the one that as well. He's also also
- 50:30displayed it in other episodes where he can be off the wall and a bit.
- 50:34I'm not sure if the most flame and flaming Homer's episode is before this
- 50:38one. Yeah, Moses season three. Yeah, so in that one even
- 50:43he loses his mind a little bit and goes a little bit chaotic on that
- 50:45one. So he's got it in him to kind of lose it. So
- 50:47I think Homer being off the wall on this and again he looks the angriest
- 50:51of everyone. I think, Wow, that's my old smith in Westion.
- 50:54You're gonna play whether it be careful because it's loaded. Damn. Guns are
- 51:00very dangerous and I won't have them in this house. How can you have
- 51:05a house without a gun? What about bear can't through the door. I'm
- 51:09going to bury it in the yard where little hands can't get to it.
- 51:13You should have fired into the air. She would have run off. Grandpa
- 51:16Simpson is so good in this episode. Underrated performance. What was the point
- 51:21for you when you finally realized that you were in that moment where it's like
- 51:23it'll happen to you. You know. I used to be with it,
- 51:25but I'm not a change what it was. Have you hit that moment yet?
- 51:29I've definitely hit that moment where I don't understand, Like I don't understand
- 51:31the music scene anymore. I'm just I'm getting old. Yeah, completely,
- 51:36I've think four or five years ago happened to me. I think TikTok is
- 51:38definitely one way I can't sit up for the life of me, and I
- 51:42can't understand any of the filters or even snapchat to find a little bit out
- 51:45of my depth. So, yes, it's happened. I finally had to
- 51:47like learn it from my job while being social media and things like that.
- 51:52But do you guys use TikTok for your podcast or was it mainly Instagram?
- 51:54We've used it sporadically, I think again that's probably a sign of our age.
- 51:59We've had a couple that have done okay, but we've not been consistent
- 52:02whatsoever, which I think TikTok seems to face the problem. Yeah, yeah,
- 52:07consistent every day. If you don't post every day, TikTok algorithms goes
- 52:10nah. Yeah, yeah, we are. We are long gone. We
- 52:14are long gone on TikTok. Yeah. Yeah, the problem is I sually
- 52:16we put all our eggs in one bart. With Facebook, We've got a
- 52:19huge following. But like I said, you know, a couple of weeks
- 52:21ago, they just took it away from us. Adam know when I thought
- 52:23I need to start ticking and talking. That's what they call it, right
- 52:34exactly. Snapchat is still a thing. I never used Snapchat ever in my
- 52:37life. I work in social media and we work with a lot of creators
- 52:43as well, and your Facebook is one we work with a lot. And
- 52:45Snapchat is actually really if you get on there, it's actually really good for
- 52:51for monetization as well. It's a really big one, especially over here.
- 52:54Yeah I think it was an America but yeah it's a mad one. But
- 53:00yeah, Facebook is Facebook. We work with a page where we have ten
- 53:02posts a day, ten posts a day. Yeah, it's full on me?
- 53:07What it look glad? Bible? What? What? What? Who?
- 53:09What's ten posts? Ten posts? Don't say who it was? But
- 53:12is it news based or is it just useless content? I say, I
- 53:15can say it's a podcast called Diary of a CEO. Okay, is your
- 53:20dragons? Don Tom he's in dragons Den over here. But yeah, he's
- 53:22kind of like a business yed guy. He's one of those. Yeah,
- 53:25but yeah it's for it's the client and that, and yeah it's doing really
- 53:29well from it, but it's really making me think maybe Facebook other pages need
- 53:34a lot more attention. But ten posts a day is mad. It's now
- 53:37top of the big town meeting at the end of part one. Mister Burns
- 53:39he's planned to block out the sun, and the mayor has his little underling
- 53:43to just give him the gist of what's going on here, and he realized
- 53:45a number of them a striking guns, so he's going to step aside and
- 53:49where everyone runs through why mister Burns has ruined their lives. Mister Burns was
- 53:53the closest thing I ever had to him, but he fired me and fun
- 54:00around Bay drinking cheap scotch and watching govern in Central Oh dear God, I
- 54:07never ass pardon my anger, but course me my clones skipping job at the
- 54:10school. And do you superstitiously take the one at got to him. I
- 54:15lost my room, my things, and my buddy's collection of old sunbathing magazine
- 54:22you based it. I lost my bar Oster's Bar. He robbed the School
- 54:28of Music, he robbed the School of Financial Security, he robbed the School
- 54:30of Title. He can't remember my name's look what he did? My best
- 54:37friend? What do you guys like? Millhouse? Well, as as I
- 54:43finished part two of Who Show, Mister Burns Radioactive Man episode was on,
- 54:49which is a big, a big Millhouse episode, and I loved the episode
- 54:52and actually quite like Millhouse in that as well. But he did start to
- 54:54grete on me towards the end, as did Lisa in both of these episodes.
- 55:00She'd kind of put herself and that's when I started to suspect Lisa because
- 55:02she was kind of providing everyone with an overview on who the main suspects are.
- 55:07She was kind of narrating the story as you went, and I was
- 55:08just like, Lisa, come on, what has Lisa got to gain here?
- 55:14But you know, I'm a fan of Millhouse. Millhouse in the oil
- 55:15Bart when Bart sells his soul, I think he's really funny in that one.
- 55:19It's also a complete dick though it's totally fair, but it was It's
- 55:28nice to see Millhouse finally have the upper hand on Barca. Usually Bart just
- 55:31hanging shit on Millhouse. I always remember that moment in Summer of four foot
- 55:35two where they go to go on the summer vacation and Bart's trying to impress
- 55:39those kids and then they don't vote for for it. It was like,
- 55:43who was you think, Dennis and Menace as I did it work? No,
- 55:45they must have seen you. But so it's perfect time here for mister
- 55:51Burns to arrive with some oil to for his wheels, the dog's wheels,
- 55:53so because they're squeaking a bit, and I just love that what a heel
- 55:58where he's like, I've got some oil, perhaps I can sell him some
- 56:00oil to this dog, And I was like, what a prick. I
- 56:06just I just love the way thats have. Mister Burns go full super villain
- 56:08in this episode. Yeah, the old waistcoat pocket what's the word for storing
- 56:15a gun that's so bad that I don't know? The wholester who thank you,
- 56:19I've even got a run down, Yeah, the old waistcoat holster.
- 56:22Yeah, and he's got a bit of a spring in his step at this
- 56:23point as well as if anything bad, very cocky and pay attention to that
- 56:29Holster is also a very big clue yes, yeah, yeah. So then
- 56:31we get did you see you haven't seen the sun set at three pm?
- 56:35Of course to see Captain has shut up you. And then he gets through
- 56:37the sun, wads off into the knife Crossy arrives from Reno. He's been
- 56:39away for six weeks? Where is everybody? You? Okay? What did
- 56:53you play that with? Response? This Burns has been shot. Just a
- 57:01minute. This isn't mister Burns at all. It's a mask. Wait,
- 57:09it is Burns. His wrinklee skin looks like a mask. I don't think,
- 57:15Well I don't know who did this. Everyone in towns a suspect.
- 57:27Well, I couldn't. Possibly it's alve this mystery, can you Yeah,
- 57:32I'll give it a shot. I mean, you know, it's my job,
- 57:36right And that is the end of part one, and we'll just basically
- 57:38talk about episodes. You won't skin through the whole thing. It will take
- 57:40forever. But I just love the way in episode two, the way so
- 57:45when it starts off with the shower scene, do you know what that's a
- 57:46reference to? Where it's just it's a dream? Do you do you know
- 57:50what that's a reference to? Because they've become detectives together in the race cab.
- 57:53Yeah, so basically what happened was Dallas, the show we mentioned earlier
- 57:58with the who shot Jr. Years or six years later or whatever. Ratings
- 58:00were dropping after they killed off one of their main characters, and then the
- 58:06season finale, a woman wakes up from a sleep, goes into the shower
- 58:09and the person who was her husband had died and she'd since remarried and I
- 58:13think his name is Bobby or something, and he's just having a shower and
- 58:15he's like hello, And that was the end of the season. So for
- 58:17the entire summer, everyone's going, how is this possible? Whatever, And
- 58:21they just explain in the first episode of the next season, Oh, that
- 58:23last season was all a dream. Pretend it never happened. He's back,
- 58:29and that's where the whole it was just the dream things comes from. Now
- 58:31whenever you see a parody of it was all a dream. Yeah, that's
- 58:35what they're taking off here. Basically, it was just widing themselves out of
- 58:37a hole because everyone stopped watching because they killed off a character. So they
- 58:40just rode him back in and said it was all a dream. And that's
- 58:43what this was a take off of. Because it was Dallas and Dallas because
- 58:46they were coming back from the season. Yeah, and that's how that season
- 58:51started as well. Yeah. One thing as well that really stuck out from
- 58:54the first episode is Marge obviously said she would go and bury the gun,
- 58:58and it's sort of a yes, did she bury it? Did she not
- 59:00bury it? But she buried it in the front garden. Yeah, the
- 59:05revolver, the revolver box was dug up and it was just blowing in the
- 59:07wind of the front garden, which everybody can see. So whoever's dug that
- 59:12revolver up? Yeah, I was like, wow, why not the back
- 59:15garden. You've already got like bits of treehouse. You could hide it underneath.
- 59:19I guess they did that as an establishing shot, so you can see
- 59:21the Simpsons house in the background, so you know where it was. We
- 59:24guys, as lost as I was as a kid watching the Twin Peaks reference
- 59:29in this episode with the clues, I had fucking no idea what was going
- 59:32on when I was a kid. I still I've still never seen Twin Peaks.
- 59:36I still I've seen that scene now because I knew what they were referencing,
- 59:38But the the Burns is sued. I was like, I have no
- 59:42idea, what's happening right now? Yeah, I think I've got the basic
- 59:45ings think references, but I didn't get a twin Peaks. Now, was
- 59:46it Wigham had some bad cream and then started having a bad dream? Bad
- 59:52cream was warm? Or yeah yeah, yeah, yeah. So my girlfriend
- 59:57said, that's a Twin Peaks reference. That's a Twin Peak and I I've
- 1:00:00never seen it, so I didn't get it, but she got it straight
- 1:00:01away. I think that's what the Simpsons were so great at, was referencing
- 1:00:05things that sort of made you go and do research and discover other great moments
- 1:00:08of pop culture sort of other great well. For example, they're Indiana Jones
- 1:00:14parody with Homer rolling down the stairs. If you haven't seen Indiana Jones,
- 1:00:17yeah, you just think that's just a funny Simpsons visual gag. But no,
- 1:00:21as you get you're like, hey, it's Indiana Jones. You know
- 1:00:23so good this and these both these episodes are chopped full of them as well.
- 1:00:27Yeah one dred percent, Yeah, but what we lock your key takeaways
- 1:00:30from part two? For me, the standout moment was, and it's so
- 1:00:34small and insignificant, but Moe's lie detector. Oh that's iconic, isn't it?
- 1:00:37So so good? I have a hot date tonight, No I have
- 1:00:42I have a date. No, I have a dinner with a friend.
- 1:00:45No, I have dinner alone watching TV alone. No, No, I'm
- 1:00:47going to sit on old ladies in Victoria's Secret No sears okay, ding so
- 1:00:53good? Sound like I don't deserve this chebvy treatment. So good, that's
- 1:01:01great. I do also love the basic instinct Willie gag here opening up the
- 1:01:06legs of the kilt. So do you think they did a good job of
- 1:01:09establishing that Homer was going to be the one? It felt a bit early
- 1:01:13in the episode went upon reflection now, but I think it's a game.
- 1:01:15When I was first watching it, I went, ah, it's just Homer,
- 1:01:17because it all made sense. I think, like because we said about
- 1:01:22the other episodes. I mean, even though he was the most angry one,
- 1:01:24and you know, you think he probably has it in him because he
- 1:01:28usually calms down it's resolved. I never, even though it did got about
- 1:01:32to be even though it is one of the main family, I didn't.
- 1:01:37I think Home was too big a character In my head. Even then,
- 1:01:38I was like, it's not going to be him, but I don't,
- 1:01:43you know, I don't even remember as a kid, though, who I
- 1:01:45strongly believed it being. I remember thinking he shot himself for a long time
- 1:01:49because the whole star and maybe he was trying to pull it out, and
- 1:01:52I did, yeah, I for a long time before he'd accidentally discharged the
- 1:01:55rifle of the pistol into himself. But would never in a million have gone
- 1:02:00to Maggie. I remember when I was watching this as a kid, I
- 1:02:02thought it was Smithers, and then when they said it was Homer, I
- 1:02:05thought, ah. Then I thought maybe it was Herb. I thought they're
- 1:02:07going to bring back Herb the Simpsons, But then it wouldn't make sense because
- 1:02:12I hadn't really established a reason for that. But any reason to bring back
- 1:02:15Herb, in my opinion, because I thought Dan Davida was Herb is one
- 1:02:16of my favorite one or two time characters of all time. But yeah,
- 1:02:21I just I remember watching this one and when it was revealed finally at the
- 1:02:23end that it is it is Maggie. I remember being disappointed, But you
- 1:02:29know, my logical brain now looks back and goes it was probably the right
- 1:02:31option because it was the only sort of way out, wasn't it if they
- 1:02:36did the evil baby with the one eyebrow. Yeah, but then you have
- 1:02:38to ignore the Simpsons DNA as as trou McClure says in one hundred and thirtyeth
- 1:02:44episode Spectacular that it would just be down right nuddy had Larry Burns been introduced
- 1:02:49by this point or not, and of season six I think he was.
- 1:02:52Season seven, I want to say Burns, baby Burns. But holy Molly,
- 1:02:55is at a great episode that I never appreciated. Nothing as aid as
- 1:02:58a kid so good, so obviously so in the one hundred and thirty eight
- 1:03:01episode Spectacular, which may have been the following season or the season after,
- 1:03:06it's where they show all the alternate endings that they had the animators just draw
- 1:03:09just to throw them off. They were genuinely created because it was a big
- 1:03:13deal. Like they said that when they did the table read for this one,
- 1:03:15the final five to ten pages of the script were printed out on separate
- 1:03:20paper and only a handful of them new and once they'd done it, they
- 1:03:23shredded it. You couldn't read it anymore because they wanted to keep it a
- 1:03:27secret. And yeah, so basically it was like this huge deal. So
- 1:03:30they got them to do the fake endings and that's why they had the ending
- 1:03:34in that episode where it was actually revealed to be Smithers, so you would
- 1:03:37never really know who actually was. Yeah. Wow, they went all out
- 1:03:39then. Yeah, And apparently they tried to leak it. They went to
- 1:03:42like news outlets and said, look, I've got footage of this Smithers.
- 1:03:45Here's the footage, and no news outlet would run with it. Everyone all
- 1:03:50of a sudden, was honest. They wanted to throw out this spoiler that
- 1:03:52was a fake spoiler, but no one bought it anyway. But that is
- 1:03:54who shot mister Burns part too. Just it would probably be top for me.
- 1:03:59It's top five, but I knowbout you guys, but top five most
- 1:04:00iconic episodes of the Simpsons. Not necessarily the best, but just iconic.
- 1:04:04It's the ones that we were one of the ones that we remember the most.
- 1:04:08I think, yeah, I think it's jam packed with loads of singers,
- 1:04:10like I said, And yeah, even though in the fact it's spook
- 1:04:13because usually the Simpsons tend the spoof maybe one film or whatever. But it
- 1:04:16does do a few good spoofs. And if you could nods to other mysteries
- 1:04:19as well, and like you say, when you get older, you kind
- 1:04:21of realize what that actually, you know. I didn't know what basic instinct
- 1:04:24was when I was watching it the first time, but then the joke Riddy
- 1:04:27lunds when you know the exact thing that they're doing. So yeah, I
- 1:04:30think it definitely holds up. Not yeah, it's not in my top five,
- 1:04:31but it's definitely like in one of the ones, like I think back
- 1:04:34and Go, that's a very solid episode. Definitely. But speaking of top
- 1:04:38five, asked the question for you guys now before we get into your to
- 1:04:41your stuff, so I threw it to you. You're in charge of a
- 1:04:44Simpsons marathon ninety to ninety eight. I'm not sure what did Aaron BBC?
- 1:04:47What was what? Sky? What was it on Channel four and Sky?
- 1:04:53Sky one? H Channel four and Sky? Okay, so not only a
- 1:04:55Channel four and Sky Friday Night five episodes Simpsons marathon? What episodes that you
- 1:05:00guys go on with. I've got some. The thing is, I'm not
- 1:05:02going to try and be too cool with this. I'm going to go for
- 1:05:05ones that I just think naturally, you know, the standouts, and I
- 1:05:08think some of them are fairly obvious. But yeah, march Bus is the
- 1:05:11monorail. That's the one that's one of those iconic ones that it's just it's
- 1:05:15just so memorable. Yeah, and I didn't really I didn't realize it was
- 1:05:18called this one. I searched Simpson's Lord of the Flyers and it was das
- 1:05:20Bus. Dast Bus is fantastic. Yeah, or rescue by let's say,
- 1:05:25mo King of the Hill. The only reason for that one is because you
- 1:05:32know when you have certain food on TV that really makes you like you really
- 1:05:35want to eat it. That spaghetti protein bar that he does whenever I see
- 1:05:42looks so good. So for that little nod for that. But I found
- 1:05:46a recipe online for that, which is I don't know how it was a
- 1:05:48recipe on line. When I was searching for it, it showed me someone
- 1:05:50made one. I was like, it's not quite the same, but yeah,
- 1:05:55I was go a Treehouse of Horror. They're all great, but I
- 1:05:58like the I really like the Edgar Poe one, but also the snake snake
- 1:06:01Hair one is brilliant. And I really think Carl the Pa Simpson and Delilah,
- 1:06:08I really like Carl the Pa. I think his voice is incredible,
- 1:06:11so underrated, have you I see it as as Carl is so great.
- 1:06:15Yeah, he's brilliant. All right, well's a good it's a good five.
- 1:06:17What about you, Ben, We we have none of the same,
- 1:06:21which is cool. And these are ones. I picked these five before I
- 1:06:26looked online for additional episodes because I could easily have picked fifteen. So we're
- 1:06:30starting off with the b Sharps. As a big Beatles fan, I approve
- 1:06:33it's just so much fun. Then we're moving on to two dozen and one
- 1:06:38Greyhounds, where mister Burns tries to make the greyhound suit mister Plow. Then
- 1:06:44we go into the way we was just always remember, all right, all
- 1:06:46right, I'll walk in the mud. Yeah, that same way that I'm
- 1:06:49gonna hug you in Kisse. You'll never let you go. It's just so
- 1:06:51sweet, isn't it? So good? So good? And then we're finishing
- 1:06:56on Flaming Mos, which again became just so much fun to have a mo
- 1:07:00one in that homer at the top and at the end of finding Mos with
- 1:07:02his gown over half over his face. It's just one of the most funniest
- 1:07:05visuals ever. You were mentioned that you love the emotional endings, how you're
- 1:07:11going the way he was? I thought you might have thrown in and make
- 1:07:13you make three. They do it for her. That seems to be the
- 1:07:15one everyone talks about now. It would Yeah, if I had gone with
- 1:07:18my then googled ones, it would one hundred percent of been on there.
- 1:07:20And also, yeah, the is it the Joe? No, Marg Marge
- 1:07:26be not proud and a Millhouse Divided always kind of stuck with me as well
- 1:07:30because Kurt van Outen is such a funny character as well. The best part
- 1:07:33about Millhouse Divided is they were willing to separate these two characters and at the
- 1:07:38end they didn't get back together. That's the bit I love you. Yeah,
- 1:07:42yeah, yeah, It's like they set up like, oh, you
- 1:07:44know, he's singing the song for It's all happy ending against She's gonna leave
- 1:07:46this big ladiator go and got back with Kirk. She's like, no,
- 1:07:49I don't like you. It's like that's life, you know. They split
- 1:07:53up for a reason. Alright, But let's talk about I could murder a
- 1:07:59podcast. So yeah, basically you mentioned how you did you still use you
- 1:08:02launched it over covid? Is that what you said? Yes, yeah,
- 1:08:05kind of at the height of the first lockdown, or when things first started
- 1:08:09to ease up slightly that we could be in the same room as one another.
- 1:08:12We'd always wanted to do something, and we were both kind of still
- 1:08:15working through the pandemic, but we had a bit of spare time. We
- 1:08:18both got kind of drunk and tried to rip off another YouTube channel, which
- 1:08:21is Hummy's VR comedy, and instead of playing virtual reality games, they use
- 1:08:27the games as platforms to do improv comedy and they use the characters and they
- 1:08:31film from their headsets and it's so so good. It's very niche, but
- 1:08:34so so good. We wanted to do our own version, but we quickly
- 1:08:38realized we get terrible motion sickness, so we went with Plan B. Tom
- 1:08:42had the name. We were both always into our true crime and yeah,
- 1:08:45the rest is kind of history for now. Any particular crime that you invest
- 1:08:51yourself in more than others, well, well, I think nowadays what definitely
- 1:08:56with the podcast, I enjoy the light moments of it, or being able
- 1:08:59to be like in the podcast, which is the bits why I find it
- 1:09:01fun. And I think we had the most fun with doing the ones that
- 1:09:04are mysteries or ones that happened so long ago, they don't feel real.
- 1:09:10Now you feel like, oh, you feel like in a safer zone,
- 1:09:13to be a bit walk the line a bit more in terms of having a
- 1:09:16few jokes. Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's the word. But a
- 1:09:18mystery ones, I think it's always good to speculate and discuss between ourselves what
- 1:09:21we think might have actually happened. I think then, yeah, I don't
- 1:09:27know, some random ones really like Again or ed Guyn, however you want
- 1:09:30to say it. That one was actually very enjoyable because it was so grotesque.
- 1:09:34It just felt like a horror film. But yeah, mystery ones are
- 1:09:38great. Wasn't that the text has changed on Messaco? Wasn't it based on
- 1:09:42him? Yeah? Yeah, definitely played a big part in the family.
- 1:09:45Yeah, yeah, one hundred percent. Yeah. I mean there's so many
- 1:09:48cases we've done that do feel that way. I think it's tricky because in
- 1:09:53our world it's you're either a super serious facts facts, facts, facts,
- 1:09:57dates, dates, date states, this is what happened. Or there are
- 1:10:00ones that are really loose and actually take the piss in quite an offensive way
- 1:10:03some of them, and we're somewhere in the middle. Floating around. We're
- 1:10:09kind of like a mid morning you can have a bath and listen to us.
- 1:10:12Nothing bad is going to happen. We try and when it does get
- 1:10:15a bit too intense, the light relief is usually at my expense or you
- 1:10:19know, any weird niche references. We can go down, but it's we
- 1:10:23try and make it light where we can so that it's more digestible, because
- 1:10:27some of these cases are really heavy. I think a lot of people have
- 1:10:29said that it's like they can't listen to true crime because they find it either
- 1:10:32triggering or they find it really hard. And we're kind of a bit like,
- 1:10:35because we have the light moments, we kind of break it up a
- 1:10:38little bit. I'm sure that's a bit some people find really frustrating because they
- 1:10:41want us to just to carry on and get into it. But at the
- 1:10:43same time, yeah, I wouldn't do it if it's just been serious the
- 1:10:45whole time. But I do think us doing it on YouTube, that's where
- 1:10:49you get the comments from people going, oh, it's not always wanting to
- 1:10:53get on with it. That's why I think a lot of the more kind
- 1:10:55of the more crude ones that take the piss a lot more. They just
- 1:10:59don't do visuals, so they still on audio, and you know, then
- 1:11:00no one can really comment in a public space and they can get away of
- 1:11:03it a lot more. But we put ourselves in the fire and line a
- 1:11:06little bit. I was just interested to know that how did you guys go
- 1:11:10into it, going how do we differentiate ourself from every other true crime podcast
- 1:11:15because there's so many of them. Yeah, that's true, and every every
- 1:11:18case is being covered by at least one of them. So for us it
- 1:11:21was I mean even in our early time on YouTube, that was when we
- 1:11:25were so stoked when you reached out because in our first couple of series on
- 1:11:29YouTube, we put up a lot of visual gags and a few of them
- 1:11:31were Simpsons ones. So Tom was like, oh, we were He made
- 1:11:35a joke and then was like, oh that's good, squishy and a little
- 1:11:40a little cup of so niche. No one's watching true crime looking for Simpsons
- 1:11:44references, but that was our kind of our thing. Everyone loves those,
- 1:11:47but that honestly helps you find a whole new audience. If you can work
- 1:11:50in Simpsons references, you're there. Well, we did every series that we
- 1:11:56do, we do an audience vote and we just did the one our audience
- 1:11:59vote last week and someone even commented who shot mister Burns? Cover that case?
- 1:12:02Who shot mister Burns? Cover that case? And so we mentioned we're
- 1:12:04coming on with you, which was super pumped about. But I think it's
- 1:12:09just we've we try and do it slightly different. We try and interject where
- 1:12:13we can a little bit of light relief or make it more digestible, and
- 1:12:16that's and it's that's kind of separated us for now from a few other podcasts,
- 1:12:20which has been nice. Have you ever considered doing who Shot Mister Burns
- 1:12:25as a serious case but having a different killer, just putting your own spin
- 1:12:29on it. That would be so much fun. That would be fun.
- 1:12:31Definitely would be fun. Yeah, and yeah, we could go kind of
- 1:12:34urn with it. I mean, yeah, that could be That could be
- 1:12:38cool. I've got three order thousand followers who might be interested in watching in
- 1:12:43that case, It's yeah, I think it's in the works. But we
- 1:12:47have interesting I think that's probably what Tom's about to say. We've covered cases
- 1:12:50that are who Done It? Where there's you know, someone that's sadly being
- 1:12:57murdered, and yeah, there are four or five family members, strangers,
- 1:13:01work, colleagues, ex lovers and it's still unsolved, or there's someone been
- 1:13:05wrongfully imprisoned or rightfully in prison, and those cases are always the most fascinating
- 1:13:10ones because everyone has a different opinion and really strong different opinion, which I
- 1:13:15think, again was such a cool thing about these Simpsons episodes is that everyone
- 1:13:18had a different person in mind. No one had Maggie, No nobody.
- 1:13:24Yeah, is there any case off of it to you, any type of
- 1:13:28case? Well, yeah, But one of the ones that Ben definitely had
- 1:13:30on his list was it was one that we got voted in the public vote,
- 1:13:34so it kind of were ham strong and we had to kind of cover
- 1:13:39it. I've kind of been open to whatever case really just because I felt
- 1:13:43like we've covered so we've covered an absolute breadth of ones from you know,
- 1:13:47school shootings to like in Watkins Jimmy staff, all that kind of stuff,
- 1:13:50and they feel like we kind of not because I think we've did not desensitize
- 1:13:55ourselves. We still get like, you know, mostly affected by the episodes.
- 1:13:57But and a lot of times we when filming them, we'll crack jokes
- 1:14:01to each other that don't make the episode to kind of loosen the vibe a
- 1:14:04little bit and get us through some dark bits, which I think helps us
- 1:14:09definitely. But I think, no, I think is the ones we've covered.
- 1:14:12I think that we're kind of open to everything. There's ones that are
- 1:14:15more interested in rather than a case of being like I wouldn't want to cover
- 1:14:18that for whatever reason. I think the only thing that we ever do say
- 1:14:21is kind off limits is if someone requests a case that happened a month ago,
- 1:14:26a few weeks ago, something that's very prominent in the news, because
- 1:14:29we don't have all the facts yet, it's very reactionary. There are a
- 1:14:31lot of channels that do do that type of thing and like an overview and
- 1:14:34interject their opinions on new you know, recent news. There's been so much
- 1:14:38in the news today about terrible things that have happened in Sweden and Austria,
- 1:14:43but especially if it's a murder case, we have to wait until we have
- 1:14:46all of our facts, until it's not so emotionally fresh that people might view
- 1:14:51us as trying to cash in on that kind of situation, which is just
- 1:14:55not what we're about at all. So that's the only thing I'd say,
- 1:14:57Like, really recent events is kind of things we typically tried to avoid.
- 1:15:00I was just better to ask you, do you ever watch the news days
- 1:15:02days and just go we can do a show on that. But do you
- 1:15:05watch the news now and go three years from now? Yeah? The Titan
- 1:15:11submersible. Do you remember that a year ago? Two years ago? How
- 1:15:15could you not? Yeah? Well that's well. One of the Simpsons,
- 1:15:18one of the classic Simpsons rids Mike Race, went on that it was all
- 1:15:23over the news as a result. Wow. Yeah, I mean there was
- 1:15:26content made about that the day, well before it had even been discovered what
- 1:15:30had happened. There were so many people making content about it. But I
- 1:15:32still feel it's very fresh for the families and investigations still going on. But
- 1:15:36I would again I find that situation harrowing but fascinating. But there's as you
- 1:15:42said, there was news news alerts today, there was a school in Sweden
- 1:15:45that something terrible happened in. There'll be people wanting content about that, but
- 1:15:49it's just that's kind of not our not our thing. And then mass shootings
- 1:15:54or incidents like that, especially when it's kids, it's they always slightly difficult
- 1:16:00to talk about and research thoroughly and they've been the most challenging ones to deliver,
- 1:16:04Tom, I think, I mean, they're all challenging, but yeah,
- 1:16:08I'm fully agree with you. I think it's it's it's because I agree
- 1:16:12with you as well, but the news stuff. But it's like, we
- 1:16:14can't we can't monetize it straight away, but we can monetize it in two
- 1:16:16years time. It still feels a little bit like that. It's problematic in
- 1:16:20itself, but yeah, it's more because it's fresh, and you know,
- 1:16:24we don't want to say anything or if someone's been accused of something and you
- 1:16:27know early on and it proved not to be the case. But yeah,
- 1:16:31it's tricky. But I think one thing that one of the best comments we
- 1:16:35get from people is just people saying they watch it and they've you know,
- 1:16:39they've heard this case a million times, but they've learned something new from us,
- 1:16:42or they enjoy they listen to it and they want to watch it again
- 1:16:45as well, and we give them a slightly different experience watching it. I
- 1:16:48think that's always the kind of nice comments we get about them. But yeah,
- 1:16:51I think it has to be a little bit time past before we can
- 1:16:54jump on it. But it's for two reasons. Like you said, obviously
- 1:16:57it's a bit too raw being so reasonable. I like the idea of we
- 1:17:00don't have all the facts yet. You can't do a full, complete deep
- 1:17:02dive unless you've got no pun intended, all the facts on for example,
- 1:17:06the subversa and things like that. You know, because there was a lot
- 1:17:10of people making apologies after the actual reasoning came out. Everyone was like,
- 1:17:14ah, we'll cracking jokes and things we probably shouldn't have been. Yeah,
- 1:17:16yeah, it was luckily nothing. We've not had to do any kind of
- 1:17:19apology yet, but yeah, I can completely understand how that, how how
- 1:17:26that does happen, And yeah, we want to get our facts right,
- 1:17:29as Tom said we would. We would hate to get something incorrect or misrepresent
- 1:17:32a person that is, you know, innocent of something where we're not.
- 1:17:36We're not. We're not about that at all. Have you ever started a
- 1:17:40crime particular sort of episode of story and just gone halfway through and went just
- 1:17:44not feeling it. I just can't continue with this one or say our first
- 1:17:46episode was a real struggle because it was just it was absolutely terrible when it
- 1:17:50took about five hours to get get through it. But because we had in
- 1:17:54their structure whatsoever. But apart from that, I don't I don't know.
- 1:17:58I think this one is that I'm less ged about. And then usually those
- 1:18:02ones, to be fair surprise me when we actually film them and we discuss
- 1:18:05them. But there's never been one that we've gone like started it or researching
- 1:18:10it and gone Now. We have bailed on a couple maybe season finishes and
- 1:18:15changed them because we thought maybe they're not a strong, stronger clothes we like
- 1:18:17to use to go for a bit of a curveball at the end of the
- 1:18:19series. But yeah, I don't know. I think because we have such
- 1:18:25a long time as well, where we have usually have two or three months
- 1:18:28between the series, we have a good time to kind of vet out the
- 1:18:30ones that we think and not quite up to what we want to do.
- 1:18:34Was that a deliberate choice going into it, not a weekly thing. We're
- 1:18:38doing this season by season so we don't burn ourselves out or Yeah, we
- 1:18:41started with six episodes the first series, and then we yead doubled that and
- 1:18:45then when we decided we're not going to do visual for a series, I
- 1:18:47thought our people will probably be a bit pissed off. Let's do eighteen,
- 1:18:51which I think everyone hated me for after doing it because it was like,
- 1:18:54yeah, there's a long, a long our stretch, but I think,
- 1:18:57yeah, it works nicely and are kind of like twelve on twelve off.
- 1:19:00But we still do minnesotes every week on our website. So we do and
- 1:19:03they're like forty minutes long as well, and we do that. There's over
- 1:19:06one hundred and fifty on there now, so like, even though we have
- 1:19:09a break, it's still not a break break. And yeah, those ones
- 1:19:14are always good, so you tease them with the seasons. But if you
- 1:19:17want to get weekly content, you've got to be a subscriber. That's the
- 1:19:20key. Yeah, yeah, I love that. My marketing brain is like,
- 1:19:24yes, that's how it works. So with let's talk about so the
- 1:19:29website. I've noticed, so what do you we use Patreon, which I'm
- 1:19:31trying to get away from me and it's not really liking the platform of Patreont
- 1:19:35the moment. What do you guys use as a platform for subscribers fourth Wall.
- 1:19:40There's a little they did a little video on us the other day which
- 1:19:43it might be might be a few for you to watch, but we basically
- 1:19:45have some problems with Patreon, and we didn't quite like how they did certain
- 1:19:48things, and fourth Wall has been really ideal in terms of how they've been
- 1:19:53really responsive to everything, even open to suggestion if you suggest certain things.
- 1:19:58And as well for us it was merch because you can basically they deal at
- 1:20:01the shipping and stuff like that, so we could make things. They'll deal
- 1:20:04with the ship in if you don't need to print loads in one time,
- 1:20:08the print individual for individual orders. But they've been great for what we've needed.
- 1:20:13And yeah, it's been kind of seamless going from Patreon to there.
- 1:20:17Patreon has just found quite buggy with certain elements. Yeah, really glitchy.
- 1:20:21Every month there were some just some strange things happening. But we've not had
- 1:20:25that issue since going to Fourth Form and we have more control and people get
- 1:20:29way more value for their money now, So the feedback has been pretty pretty
- 1:20:33good. It's been a pretty seamless What has been about a year and a
- 1:20:35half two years now that we ditch Patreon, I think so, Yeah,
- 1:20:39did you find it was subscribe as drop off or was a transition Today you're
- 1:20:42just jump ship all of them at the same time. When you when you
- 1:20:45when you move platforms. We've done the video. We did a video saying
- 1:20:48basically, we're moving website and then we still nowadays even get the old person
- 1:20:55signent to patroon, but who we guess is watching a really old episode of
- 1:20:58US and they're seeing us advertising pay, which is a bit crap, but
- 1:21:00we do say still the first video they can see is we've moved over.
- 1:21:04So yeah, people stayed. Kind of think people just forget about when they
- 1:21:06subscribe to a Patreon. They said they stayed there for ages and it was
- 1:21:10twindling down, but the numbers picked up kind of the switcher rouge over to
- 1:21:13the other side. It wasn't too long to hit kind of where we're out
- 1:21:15on Patreon, but they had the numbers slowly went away. Patron's kind of
- 1:21:19just been a little like, I don't know, a little pot of people
- 1:21:23that slowly just dwindled. But yeah, it's been been fairly seamless. Is
- 1:21:28there anything exciting coming up? Say? Exciting and it's crime, but the
- 1:21:30anything big stories coming up in the next season that we should tease here,
- 1:21:34Oh we have where when is this likely to go out? When would you
- 1:21:39like it to go out? Whenever? Whenever's good for you. So our
- 1:21:45our next episode is nine to eleven, which is for us. Oh wow,
- 1:21:49it's a bit heavy, big case. I'm assuming you haven't announced that
- 1:21:53yet, so I'll wait till you've announced it before we put this. Yeah,
- 1:21:57so we're we'll be announcing that. What when we be announcing that time?
- 1:22:01Early April? Now, it'll be next Friday. Yeah, so Friday,
- 1:22:06Yeah, not too far away. Next. That's just we've frowned as
- 1:22:13well, Like we our episodes tend to fall randomly in line with either twenty
- 1:22:15five anniversary or whatever when we've been doing them, and we originally were doing
- 1:22:19series nine, episode twelve, it's going to be nine to eleven, and
- 1:22:24we thought, let's just see season nine, episode eleven as nine to eleven
- 1:22:27because that makes a lot of sense. It's just fallen that way. Yeah,
- 1:22:30I feel like nine eleven is something you could do an entire season on.
- 1:22:32There's just so many stories there. Oh yeah, that's that's a really
- 1:22:35tricky thing. When we get a giant case that other podcasts have done,
- 1:22:40Yeah, the whole series on. There are cases we've covered that literally podcasts
- 1:22:44have been made about that case in particular that have multiple series regarding so yeah,
- 1:22:49it's quite daunting when we have to condense certain cases. So nine to
- 1:22:54eleven we're going to lean in towards the end a bit more to the conspiracies
- 1:22:58and exploring not that necessarily we buy into them, but we feel that that
- 1:23:02there'll be some good conversations there. We'll go through the timeline of events in
- 1:23:05the background, but there's so much you could add to that in terms of
- 1:23:10the aftermath, the impact it had on the world. So that's going to
- 1:23:14be really hard to kind of condense what could be several hours into you know,
- 1:23:16an hour and a half. I buy into the conspiracies a bit.
- 1:23:19I feel like you kind of have to sometimes when you do in a true
- 1:23:21crime, right, you have to at least be open minded. Oh yeah,
- 1:23:26completely, Yeah, my mind is open on it though. Oh really,
- 1:23:29Okay, that sounds like a little brag. Well, producer Dan as
- 1:23:33Well is coming into this as a former conspiracy theorist. Warmers he smoked he
- 1:23:42smoked weed once once, the one time it really really got him. But
- 1:23:49he's yeah, he's gone like on the full journey of Yeah, no,
- 1:23:53the structure should not have melted away like that, and it shouldn't happen like
- 1:23:57this, The Devil's Faces in the Clouds, Yeah, exactly. Yeah,
- 1:24:01so we're going to explore his journey as well. But yeah, we've got
- 1:24:05a bunch of big episodes, and yeah, we kind of mix it up
- 1:24:09a little bit in terms of disaster. It's all quite gloomy stuff. Disasters,
- 1:24:13kidnappings, mysteries. What other kind of out there ones have we done
- 1:24:17Tom that are a bit different Michael Jackson, Michael Jackson, Yeah, which
- 1:24:21that No, he did one on Michael Jackson well yeah, yeah, and
- 1:24:25that's actually probably the one that's caused the most controversy because they're still obviously a
- 1:24:30great deal of his fans that are very passionate. We tried to be very
- 1:24:32impartial down the line with it. This is what people believe on the guilty
- 1:24:38party, this is what people believe on the innocent party, and this is
- 1:24:40you know, kind of what people believe in the middle, and it still
- 1:24:43upset a lot of people that are huge fans of him. Yeah. I
- 1:24:45find also when we do when we do anything on an in cell, then
- 1:24:49the in cells come for us a little bit. Yeah. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:24:53that's always fun. I love making people piercing people are for the right
- 1:24:59reasons. Is that as I put it. Yeah, but we just did
- 1:25:00our review revisit of Stark Raving Dad, the episode that they took down featuring
- 1:25:04Michael Jackson of the Simpsons, and I never realized until I did the research
- 1:25:09for the episode. They didn't just take it down because of docco Al Jean.
- 1:25:13The show runner took it down because he thought that Michael Jackson was using
- 1:25:16the episode to groom children, so he wanted to guest star and thought he
- 1:25:20approached them so you can go on this show that kids watch, so that
- 1:25:24he can get them to his ranch and showed them the episode and groomed them
- 1:25:27with it. I thought, I've never seen it that way before, but
- 1:25:30now I can't unsee it. Yeah, yeah, that's I had Lisa,
- 1:25:34It's your birthday in my head earlier, but now I feel bad about that.
- 1:25:38Yeah that's dirty, right, Yeah yeah, but yeah, it's a
- 1:25:43great episode. So you check that out on the feet as well. But
