- 0:07The Pittsburgh Steelers faced the Baltimore Colts at Memorial Stadium for the opening round of the NFL playoffs on Sunday, December 19th, 1976.
- 0:16The Steelers were coached by Chuck Noll and were the defending back-to-back Super Bowl champions.
- 0:21Baltimore was coached by Ted Marchabroda. They had reached the playoffs for the first time in five years in 1975,
- 0:27but they were knocked out in the first round against the Steelers.
- 0:30This audio recording is from the Baltimore Radio broadcast featuring announcers Chuck Thompson, Vince Bagley, and Art Donovan.
- 0:38The Steelers, as everybody has known, have done this year what the Colts did a year ago.
- 0:42Just beat everybody right on through and have allowed only, you know, 28 points, winning nine straight ball games.
- 0:48And that emotion has carried them into what they faced this afternoon, battling the Baltimore Colts.
- 0:53And emotion is one of the more important factors any team can bring to any football game.
- 0:57We're all ready to go. Linhardt moving on the football, swings the leg, he hits it good.
- 1:01A fine Linhardt kickoff, throwback to the two-yard line. He is straight ahead over the 10, the 15.
- 1:06Still on his feet, whoop, pop, that fumble. Big pile up at the 22.
- 1:10A big pile up at the 22-yard line, and it looks as though the Steelers covered the football. They did.
- 1:16Poole was really wracked. He was full-ax. And Fuqua covered his fumble. It is a Steeler ball, first down at the 22.
- 1:24You're saying that he didn't take a shot?
- 1:27Yeah, he really did. I think Jimmy Kennedy nailed him, and Fuqua recovered it. They were lucky.
- 1:33He wouldn't want to play anymore today.
- 1:36Vince Bagley, we're very happy to have with us Arthur Donovan, and we've got to try to keep Arthur as close to that mic as we can,
- 1:42so we can be sure to hear the Donovan comments this afternoon. First down for the Steelers at their own 22-yard line.
- 1:49Closer, let's call it the 23 as we get things started, and they're waiting for Poole to leave field.
- 1:53He is still not feeling too good. Rocky Blyer and Franco Harris will be the running backs.
- 1:57And Lewis comes wide to the left side, and going far to the other side is Lin Swan.
- 2:03Number 88 is far right, and Lewis is a wide left in a standard pro set.
- 2:07The turn, the give goes to Harris off the left side, nowhere, as he gets stuck and stuck pretty good.
- 2:12By, it looks like, Stan White, first of all, and Darrell Lewis, he managed to carry to the 25, second down, eight Steelers at their own 25.
- 2:19He lunge, he did the old Lydell Mitchell lunge, though, after the hitting.
- 2:24Most of the good running backs, Vince, all fall the same way. They fall toward that line of scrimmage or toward that goal line.
- 2:29That's that second up for Chuck.
- 2:31That's what does it. Lewis wide to the left, Swan wide to the right.
- 2:34Now Bradshaw splits the backfield, no man directly behind the talented Steeler quarterback.
- 2:39A handoff to Blyer, a sweep of his right end, caught from behind and down he goes, this old backfield.
- 2:43Jim Chayensky with a quick reaction, caught him from behind, and dropped him at about the 24-yard line.
- 2:50Chayensky just followed the pulling guard, and there was nobody there to pick him up.
- 2:54He came in there free and makes a great play.
- 2:57Which brings up third down, a nine at the 26-yard line. Brian Salter comes in, Jim Chayensky drops out.
- 3:03Colts now four down linemen, two linebackers, five deep defenders on a passing down, third and nine Pittsburgh at their own 24-yard line.
- 3:12Same offensive set for it. Now they got another number in there, looks like Stallworth is in the ballgame.
- 3:17Set out wide to the left side of the set.
- 3:19Waiting for the takeaway, Bradshaw is back to pass. A deep drop, set, half-time, firing the bomb.
- 3:24All alone, Frank Lewis, he's got it at the 20, and Lewis is going to the 10 to the 5, he scores.
- 3:30They are, you give a team that kind of time to throw the ball, they're going to kill you.
- 3:35There's a thing where you could, the ballgame turns around, they fumbled the opening kickoff, it came loose, they recovered it, and three plays later they have a score.
- 3:43You'll see the Colts got a game going on, Vince. Yeah.
- 3:45And actually they're going the wrong way. The straightest distance between two lines is straight, and they got a game, and they get picked up, and that's it.
- 3:5376 yards, and Baltimore, which supposedly has the bomb, and certainly has it, Pittsburgh, however, ironically scores on the bomb the first time they throw the ball.
- 4:02There was just no contest, Lewis completely outraced the Colts defenders. He had as much as four and five steps on the only man near him, Jackie Wallace.
- 4:10The Bradshaw pass right on the money, they lead 6 to nothing.
- 4:13Jarrella now ready to make it 7 to nothing, if he can do so.
- 4:17Waiting for the snap on the spot.
- 4:20There it is, high snap, spot is okay, kick is up in the air, and he missed it.
- 4:24He missed the point after touchdown.
- 4:27Jarrella blew a point after touchdown, and it is now Baltimore and the Steelers in a 6 to nothing ballgame.
- 4:33We have to change the notebook. The Steelers lead at 6 to nothing, and that old automatic point after touchdown is not so automatic this year.
- 4:41That's a very often happens with those soccer kickers, he pulled it left, and it was wide, no good, so maybe it'll mean something later on.
- 4:49The Colts start early though, have to come back.
- 4:53It's the fourth time this year Jarrella has missed a point after touchdown, and it is 6 to nothing, and that could be a heck of a big point in any kind of a ballgame as important as this.
- 5:02But that deep bomb from Bradshaw to Lewis has got to give the Colts secondary a little something to think about.
- 5:08As in the very first offensive series, they go 76 yards, Bradshaw to Lewis, and lead at 6 to nothing.
- 5:14Colts defensive unit, as I look at them down on the sideline, are still stamping around and very, very upset over what took place.
- 5:21Jarrella will kick it off down on the goal line, Howard Stevens of the Colts waiting for it, Jarrella moves, hits it, he squirts it along, bouncing it along.
- 5:27It's going to be picked up by no one, but it's going to go out of bounds, and they'll kick it over again.
- 5:32Well, Ron Lee was around, and Bruce Laird was around the football, but nobody bothered to pick it up, and went out of bounds at about the 26-yard line, and therefore the Steelers go back and do it again.
- 5:41I believe this guy, Jarrella, was a soccer player. He don't look like he's a kicker.
- 5:45Well, Dunne, he's been a great one, but if he hurt, maybe his hurt stayed with him. I don't understand why they didn't pick it up.
- 5:51Dunne, why wouldn't they have picked up, tried to get it out to the 35 or so?
- 5:54Well, they figured he can't kick the ball that deep, Vince, and they'll take the 5-yard penalty, and Ron will try to do his thing again.
- 6:01And you know, on the extra point that he missed, there was a high snap from center, and that could have been far from what happened.
- 6:07All you need is that little bit of a fraction of a second to set the timing off, and Jarrella missed the point after.
- 6:12Now, from the 30-yard line, Jarrella will kick it off again.
- 6:15We'll talk a little bit more about the Jarrella injury on a kicker. It's a groin pull, and it's a very bothersome thing as he swings a leg, kicking off a lot more difficult than kicking, you know, points after.
- 6:25He hits it poorly again, and Ron Lee fumbled it. It's recovered by Bruce Laird. No, he fumbled it. Now Laird picks it up.
- 6:31Laird at the 30-yard line, handling the ball one-handed, and is down at the one at the 30-yard line.
- 6:36Laird couldn't find any daylight. He couldn't find anywhere to go. Number 51, Leon Toews came in to make the tackle.
- 6:42Baltimore goes to work first down at their own 30.
- 6:45We got a little fight going down there with 47.
- 6:47Sanders, Jarrella trying to upset Blount, because they're going to be after Blount later on. Mel Blount, the right cornerback.
- 6:53Oh, that's the guy that, oh, we've got our road runner started now. We'll see what Brady Boy can do with the car.
- 7:00With white lightning, undoubtedly wide to the right, car goes wide to the left, and you've got Roosevelt leaks,
- 7:07and Lydell Mitchell has setbacks in behind Jones in a standard pro set.
- 7:10Chester, the tight end on the right end of the line, turned the gift to the second man that's Lydell nowhere.
- 7:14He got into the middle of the line, squirted it through for maybe two yards.
- 7:17Jack Lambert, and if he isn't one of the best linebackers I have ever seen, I'll wait for a better one to come along.
- 7:22Lydell got two on his own, and there was no hole at all.
- 7:26Second down, eight Baltimore at their own 32, the Steelers six, the Baltimore Colts nothing,
- 7:30the Steelers scored on a 76-yard bomb. Bradshaw to Lewis, and Jarrella missed the point after.
- 7:36Vince, I think the key to our offense today is I think they've got to get a lot of production out of Lydell Mitchell.
- 7:42If they don't, I think they're going to be in trouble.
- 7:44Well, now both Dowdy and Carr are wide to the left side.
- 7:47Slot left is Dowdy, wide to the left is Carr. See if they stay that way, and they do.
- 7:51The takeaway, the gift to Roosevelt, Leakes left side, and he is just able to bang it out about to the 35-yard line,
- 7:56goes Roosevelt, and two or three of the Steelers in there to wrap him up, including number 34 Andy Russell,
- 8:01a 34-year-old linebacker trailing to play number 78 is Dwight Fite.
- 8:05Now they're going to have to get some production out of the runners, that's right, whether it be Leakes or Mitchell,
- 8:10just to loosen it up a little bit.
- 8:12I had a dream last night that this guy, Ron Lee, was going to be the hero of the game, but he hasn't played yet.
- 8:17Well, they've just dropped defensive lineman Ernie Holmes out of the ballgame,
- 8:21and they've added a defensive back number 31 Donnie Schell.
- 8:24And here are the Colts in a double-wing formation with a third and five of their own 35.
- 8:28Don McCauley, the only man behind quarterback Jones, he's back to throw, sets up, looks, fires down the gut, incomplete.
- 8:34Mitchell, the receiver at the 45-yard line, dropped the football, it was a little bit behind him.
- 8:39Very catchable, but it hit him in the hip and got away, so there was an offside, however.
- 8:45We got the ball.
- 8:47Baltimore retains possession. I don't know if it's enough for a first down, but it's very close at the 40-yard line.
- 8:52That ball hit Mitchell in a bad place, the hands.
- 8:55Now here's the five-yard step-off, and they put it down, and it should be enough for a first down.
- 9:00They are indicating that, and it is offside, first down, a big break for the Colts to keep a drive going.
- 9:06At the 40-yard line, first down for Baltimore, 6-0 to Steelers lead here in the opening moments of play.
- 9:14Beautiful afternoon at Baltimore. Roger Carr and Dowdy both are wide to the right side of the set.
- 9:20That leaves Roosevelt, Leakes, and Lightell. Mitchell is running backs behind Jones.
- 9:24Chester tight end, left end of the line.
- 9:26Waiting for the snap, the Jones, he turns, rolls back a bit to his right, sets up, fires.
- 9:30It is going to be incomplete and almost picked off by the leaping linebacker, Jack Ham.
- 9:35And that is one thing these Steelers linebackers do as well as anybody in football, drop back in the pass coverage.
- 9:41Chuck, he had a little bit of pressure on him too, Jones, because Joe Green and the right defensive end,
- 9:46they were in there putting a lot of pressure on Jones, and he had to throw the ball a little sooner than he wanted to.
- 9:52Well, I'm glad he threw it a little higher than he wanted to, because it got away from Ham as a result, Donnie.
- 9:59All ready to go with the second-and-ten Baltimore at their own 40-yard line.
- 10:02Dowdy trotting out wide right, Carr goes the other way.
- 10:05They go to a double wing on one wing. Dowdy on the right side and the left side.
- 10:07Lightell, Mitchell, Leakes, the only man on the backfield behind Jones.
- 10:10Second and to whoops, the Steelers jump off and make contact.
- 10:14And if it's not illegal procedure against Baltimore, the Colts will pick up five.
- 10:18Mean Joe Green.
- 10:19I really believe Jones moved.
- 10:22If it's not illegal procedure against Baltimore, we'll know in a moment.
- 10:26Here's Pat Haggerty. He indicates offside to the Steelers.
- 10:33So it is second and five. The ball now at the Colts 45-yard line.
- 10:37And the only offense the Colts have shown so far has been the Pittsburgh Steelers' mistakes.
- 10:41Maybe it's better to be lucky than good.
- 10:43Number 75, defense.
- 10:46You're right, Artie. It was Joe Green, number 75, who made contact.
- 10:51Second down and five, Baltimore at their own 45-yard line.
- 10:54The Steelers got unwielded and untracked in a big hurry, leading six to nothing.
- 10:58Dowdy wide to the right side. Roger Carr split off on the left.
- 11:02Waiting for the snap to Jones in motion.
- 11:04Back toward the backfield. Dowdy to get to Lightell.
- 11:06The sweep on the right side. Makes a cut and gets pinched in there.
- 11:08And that great big linebacker, Jack Lambert, was over there to plug up that hole.
- 11:12And the gain is good about to the 47-yard line where it's now third and three at the Colts 47.
- 11:19Well, they said they couldn't jam it down their throats.
- 11:22They're short-testing them, aren't they, Dunny?
- 11:24Yeah, they're trying to, but I don't say they're wasting time.
- 11:27We're doing what you think is best, and I think what would be best is throw the ball at the card.
- 11:31And that's what I thought Jonesy ought to start doing.
- 11:34Well, on the third down, three at the 47, we'll know in a moment his card goes wide to the left side.
- 11:38Dowdy comes wide to the right.
- 11:40And now they turn it into a double wing.
- 11:42Dowdy, the wing on the right side, and Lightell, the wing on the left side.
- 11:45Only man behind the quarterback is Don McCauley.
- 11:48Back to throw is Jones.
- 11:49Pills is passed, caught by Lightell Mitchell, and out of bounds at the Steeler, 47-yard line for a first down.
- 11:54Glenn Edwards made the tackle for the Steelers.
- 11:57The guy that made that play was McCauley, picking up the pussy middle guard.
- 12:00He did a good job of blocking for Jones then.
- 12:03There they come.
- 12:06At the 48-yard line of the Steelers, first down for the Baltimore Colts.
- 12:11A drive that started at their own 30.
- 12:13Now the Steelers 48, abetted by two Steeler penalties.
- 12:17One was an offside, both were offside penalties, as a matter of fact.
- 12:20We'll get Arthur to talk a little bit about Joe Green later on in the ballgame.
- 12:23He every now and then is found lining up offside.
- 12:26He really gets right on the nose of the football.
- 12:28He's closer to the center than he is to the guard.
- 12:30And we're in an eye formation.
- 12:32Leaks the front man, Lightell, the second man, fake to Lightell, a deep drop.
- 12:35Jones firing for broke.
- 12:36Here comes Roger Carr, but it's intercepted by Wagner.
- 12:39Wagner's got it to the Steeler, 20.
- 12:41Along the 25, and it's being chased by Roosevelt Leakes, and down he goes.
- 12:45The 23-yard line, Bert Jones also in on the tackle.
- 12:48Bert Jones really moved down there, but he had pressure on him.
- 12:52He really did. He got hit just as he threw the ball.
- 12:54With the score, the Steelers 6, the Colts nothing.
- 12:56There's a break, and the action. Let's pause now for this message.
- 13:00Sailboat racing season's almost over.
- 13:02We won't have any more chances to win this year.
- 13:05Sure we will.
- 13:06The lottery's giving us a lot more chances to win in the weekly games.
- 13:09You know, in the super 50-cent game, there are now two big chances to win the million-dollar prize.
- 13:13And in the 17-for-one-dollar, 17 chances for weekly prizes up to $125,000.
- 13:18Wow, that sounds great.
- 13:20But remember, in the lottery, you've got to play to win.
- 13:23Oh, that's like sailing.
- 13:24How?
- 13:25Well, in sailing, you've got to have wind to play.
- 13:28Oh, man.
- 13:29Ooh.
- 13:34They're the same ornaments and the same lights,
- 13:37but somehow this year's tree is always more beautiful than last year's.
- 13:42And we at Households and Ants hope this holiday season will be the best and happiest ever for your family.
- 13:48If we can make the coming year happier or more enjoyable for you,
- 13:52just call Households and Ants, an equal opportunity lender.
- 14:00Well, the Steelers leading 6-0. We mentioned on the pass to Lewis that the only man near him was Jackie Wallace.
- 14:05Don't misinterpret that remark. That doesn't mean necessarily that it was Jackie's mistake or his fault.
- 14:11It just might have been a missed coverage, and Jack just turned out to be the only man close enough to give any kind of a chase.
- 14:16But it was a perfectly thrown pass from Bradshaw to Lewis that accounts for the Steelers leading by a score of 6-0.
- 14:22And under, you know, very strong pressure, Bert Jones has just thrown.
- 14:27It was intercepted by Wagner of the Steelers. They go to work at their own 22-yard line first down.
- 14:32Lewis wide to the left side of the set.
- 14:34And going the other way over there now is 88 Lynn Swan, and we've got Fuqua in the backfield, along with Franco Harris.
- 14:40Waiting for the takeaway by quarterback Bradshaw. He turns, gives it to the first man through, and that is Franco Harris.
- 14:47And he is out about to the 28, maybe 29, or let's call it 28-yard line before Bruce Laird, among others, able to make the start.
- 14:53That was just straight block, and that was a blue-eyed defensive line out on that play.
- 14:57He picked a 5, 6 yards, just a straight handoff.
- 15:01Second down and 4 for the Steelers. Ah, the straight ahead buck from Franco Harris.
- 15:06Now Fuqua and Harris side to side on the backfield. Swan wide to the right side, and it looks like Stallworth now.
- 15:1282 is wide to the left side of the set.
- 15:15And the turn, the give goes to Franco Harris, hit and shakes a tackler.
- 15:18Bruce Laird caught him and took him down on his own backfield.
- 15:20Darrell Lewis tried to put him down. He didn't get him, but he slowed him up enough so that Bruce Laird could get there and floor him.
- 15:26At the Steelers, 27, a loss of 2.
- 15:29That's a good defensive play. Lewis actually forced that play, Chuck, where Franco Harris couldn't turn the corner.
- 15:35And Bruce Laird came up like a defensive safety should.
- 15:38There goes Rocky Breyer leaving the field now.
- 15:41They're taking Breyer into the dressing room. He seems, you know, walking all right.
- 15:45I haven't any idea what the injury is. We'll get the information to you as quickly as we can right now.
- 15:49Steelers, 3rd and 6th with their own 27. They have 3rd and 9th with their own 24 and score the last time.
- 15:54Take away by Bradshaw. Deep drop wants to fire. No pressure. Fires down the middle.
- 15:58It is caught by Lewis at midfield, and he has taken down at the Baltimore 45.
- 16:03To tackle credit, Bruce Laird and Jack Wallace.
- 16:06First down, Steelers at the cold 45.
- 16:08Watching this guy only throw two passes, Chuck, and no pressure at all.
- 16:12We're going to have to stop Blitz, really, because nobody was in five yards of Bradshaw when he got into the ball.
- 16:18Look at the deep drop though, Dunne. He's 15 yards back. He looked like a punter from the distance back of the scrimmage line when he threw the ball.
- 16:24Nobody talked about Frank Lewis this week. He's 2 for 2, 1 all the way.
- 16:29Yeah, well then we better stop Blitz and get some pressure on him.
- 16:33Swan goes wide to the right side, Stallworth wide to the left side, and it's first down at the Baltimore 46.
- 16:39Steelers in possession. The gift goes to Frank O'Harris. Swings to the left side, and it's going to be caught and down in his own backfield.
- 16:44Jackie Wallace got there enough to slow him up and trip him, and then Mike Barnes got into the flow along with Stan White, and they put him down maybe at the 45.
- 16:52We'll see where they put it down at the line of scrimmage again, second and 10 at the cold 46.
- 16:59The injury to Rocky Blyer is a foot injury. However, he did not seem to give evidence of too much discomfort as he walked into the dressing room.
- 17:07But they're back there to see if they can't rewrap the foot, of course, to give him some comfort and allow him to play a little bit better.
- 17:13Now Lewis back in his wide left, and Lynn Swan is wide to the right.
- 17:17The stealer quarterback Yates reacts away without a fake. He wants to throw no pressure again. He fires upfield and is knocked down by Jackie Wallace.
- 17:24And a penalty flag drop to the 25-yard line of the Baltimore Colts.
- 17:28Frenchy Fuqua was down there, and it might be Stan White interfering with him.
- 17:32I think Chayosky tripped number 33.
- 17:37It's pass interference. Baltimore first down for the Steelers.
- 17:42I think Chayosky tripped Fuqua. He's saying Rocky Blyer is going to get a shot.
- 17:48First down.
- 17:50They got Stan White according to Pat Haggerty.
- 17:54The outside linebacker on the right who tripped Fuqua.
- 17:59The ball is spotted now. They're going to put it down at about the 31-yard line of the Baltimore Colts on a pass interference penalty against Stan White.
- 18:07He tripped Fuqua. That is not to say he did it intentionally. He does not have to do it intentionally.
- 18:12You get your feet wrapped up, and that can happen, and has happened frequently.
- 18:17And it's a pass interference call against Stan White.
- 18:20Well, we've got Stallworth wide left, wide right, Swan. We've got Fuqua and Franco Harris is running back.
- 18:26First down, Pittsburgh at the Baltimore 31.
- 18:29Bradshaw fakes and gives it off to Franco Harris. Swing it around his own right end, stops, makes a cut, and down he goes at the 30.
- 18:35Baltimore, defensing the running efforts of Franco Harris very well at this early point of the ballgame.
- 18:40Jim Chayonsky got tackle credit at the 30-yard line, second and nine.
- 18:44Funny why technically are we doing such a good job against the sweeps? We've not allowed anything on sweeps.
- 18:49I don't think we've ever allowed anything the whole season. I think we've been very strong against sweeps, Vince.
- 18:54I think a weakness as far as the runners concerned is running right out on our defensive line, and they're not doing it.
- 19:00Frank Lewis wide to the left side, put out to the right side now is Lin Swan.
- 19:05You've got Franco Harris and Fuqua. Here's a swing pass to Fuqua on the right side.
- 19:08He is making a cut and hit from behind at about the 27 or 28-yard line.
- 19:12Brett Cook got to it very quickly. Mike Barnes is also in on the play.
- 19:16And Laird also down around the ball along with Darrell Luce.
- 19:21And the ball is about at the cold 27, gained a 3-3 and 6.
- 19:25Vince, I think you'll find that our defensive line are very agile as far as getting out into the flow.
- 19:31I don't think we're that strong against running right at them.
- 19:35They're down and 6 at the Baltimore cold 27-yard line. This game is going to be replete and full of big plays.
- 19:40And here's one of them right now. Lewis and Swan are wide to the right side.
- 19:44Stalworth splits off wide to the left side. All ready to go. The Colts jump off and got back.
- 19:50Now Franco Harris moves. He's in motion. And back to throw goes Brad Shaw.
- 19:53The penalty flag is down. The throw coming to the end zone. Incomplete intended for Lynn Swan down around the 5-yard line.
- 19:59But a penalty flag has been dropped in the Steeler backfield.
- 20:03Perfectly thrown ball. Swan couldn't quite pull it in.
- 20:07Taking a good catch to get it. But let's see what this is all about. Listen to the referee.
- 20:13It's illegal procedure against the Steelers.
- 20:17The illegal motion, I think an illegal shift from Franco Harris might be the reason.
- 20:20We'll know in a moment when we hear from Haggerty.
- 20:23Whoops, hold on a minute there Mr. Referee. He got all tangled up with Sam Davis.
- 20:28Illegal motion, number 33, offense, declined.
- 20:31We're wrong. It was Pucla who was in motion and it was declined.
- 20:35But of Baltimore Colts, here comes Roy Jarella to kick a field goal.
- 20:39It'll be spotted at the 37-yard line, meaning it's a 47-yard field goal effort.
- 20:44He's been successful four of seven tries outside the 40-yard line.
- 20:48Let's see if Mike Paz doesn't block this one.
- 20:51Well they're going to put it down at the 35 so it becomes a 45-yard field goal effort.
- 20:56Well if he hurts we'll know now because they said about him.
- 21:00They'll give him two chances to kick the ball.
- 21:03Down to the 10 and another kick over the goal post.
- 21:06All ready to go. We're waiting for the snap.
- 21:10Still wait for the snap. There it is. Spot kick on the way.
- 21:14Headed toward the uprights. It's going to be good.
- 21:18Jarella has hit it from 45 yards out and it's now the Steelers.
- 21:22Nine, the Baltimore Colts nothing with a score.
- 21:24Pittsburgh nine, the Colts nothing.
- 21:26Time out here in Baltimore back in 60 seconds.
- 21:30When our great grandfathers wanted the vested look, they came to hamburgers.
- 21:36And when our grandfathers wanted the double-breasted look, they came to hamburgers.
- 21:42And when our fathers wanted the ivy league look, they found it at hamburgers.
- 21:48Because since 1850 there has only been one leader in fashion.
- 21:54And deserving that reputation took more than just offering the highest quality merchandise.
- 21:59It also meant being the leader in service.
- 22:03I was specially trained as sales people. I'd never settled for just giving directions.
- 22:08They said they've always helped you find what you want and have seen to it that you get the attention
- 22:14and the fit you expect from a leader in fashion.
- 22:18Hamburgers, the best place to look when you want to look your best.
- 22:28Well, we'll have Jarella ready to kick off.
- 22:30Down on the five-yard line Howard Stevens waiting. Jarella moves at the ball, hits it.
- 22:34He's got a kind of a sailing knuckleball to Jarella to Stevens at the ten, to the fifteen, now the twenty, twenty-five, thirty.
- 22:40And head on into number fifty-four and taken down at that spot Marv Kellum, a linebacker.
- 22:45And they pick Stevens up and run him all the way back to the fifteen.
- 22:48And I don't know what's going on now, but all of a sudden there's a little bit of a brawl.
- 22:52WNAV in Annapolis, Maryland. And all of our network stations, we pause now for station identification.
- 22:58This is the Metro Media Baltimore Coast Football Network.
- 23:02This is Jack Edwards with you each night, seven until midnight on 68WCBM, Metro Media Radio Baltimore.
- 23:08WCBM, Coach Radio.
- 23:16Some of these guys figure they shouldn't be touched.
- 23:18I don't know, look at this.
- 23:20Oh boy, Howard, go after him.
- 23:38Well, in the first offensive play, we had a carry up the middle by Lydell, good for two yards to the thirty-two yard line.
- 23:45And rather good for one yard to the thirty-two yard line. And now it's Baltimore, second down to nine at their own thirty-two.
- 23:51The Steelers have just dominated the ballgame through this first period with about five fifty remaining in a split backfield right now.
- 23:58Card of the left side down into the right side. Jones looking at the Steeler defensive unit, takes it away, gives it to Lydell.
- 24:03Lydell and a quick hitter go straight up the middle to about the thirty-five and a penalty flag follows him.
- 24:07Andy Russell is there to rope him.
- 24:09They're going to motion finally against the Colts. I wouldn't be surprised if Pittsburgh declines.
- 24:15I think these officials watched the game yesterday. They want to throw as many flags.
- 24:19As far as I can see, Arthur, maybe they do want to match them in flag throws, but I can see justification for these penalty markers.
- 24:27There were a few I watched in Oakland yesterday. I just couldn't figure out.
- 24:31Vince, I'm waiting for Roger to, for Bert Jones to really unload.
- 24:34Well, he's tried to unload. He hasn't had time to unload. I'm waiting for him to throw up the backs coming out of the backfield.
- 24:39Here's Haggerty.
- 24:42Number twenty-six, decline, third down.
- 24:45The Steelers declined. They might not throw to the backs coming out of there because of those super linebackers who were as fast as a lot of backs.
- 24:51It was Lydell Mitchell who moved prior to the snap and they declined the motion penalty to bring up third down six Baltimore at their own thirty-five.
- 25:01Baltimore spills out of the huddle. Carr comes wide to the right side. Doughty goes to the left side to go to a double wing.
- 25:07And Lydell is the wingman on the right side. On the other side it is Doughty.
- 25:11The takeaway by Jones. He rolls to the left, wants to throw, fires.
- 25:15Chester makes a heck of a catch at the forty-six yard line.
- 25:19Raymond Chester, a diving grab, as good a catch as Raymond has made all year to pick up first down Baltimore at the forty-six.
- 25:26This is good. They got one on one. He makes a real good move to the outside. Great effort. Really great effort.
- 25:32Another thing, if they're doubling the wide guys, Raymond's going to get open and they're going to have to throw to him.
- 25:38How many times are you allowed to chug the end coming out one time?
- 25:41One time.
- 25:42Well, you're a watch twenty-four against Carr.
- 25:44That's one time legally.
- 25:46One time if you don't get caught, twenty times.
- 25:48That's right.
- 25:50The high formation right now leaks the front man, Lydell, the second man. The give goes to Lydell. Lydell hits a pretty good hole and gets roped off his pins at about midfield.
- 25:57It's Jack Russell down, Andy Russell down at the bottom of the pile making the tackle for Pittsburgh.
- 26:01And somebody nailed him right up around the ears coming through the hole and knocked him off.
- 26:05A pick up of four brings up second down six Baltimore at the fifty.
- 26:09Danny, I like the way the coats aren't panicking. They're behind nine to nothing, but they haven't gone to the offensive they'd use if there was a minute left in the game or anything.
- 26:18They're being conservative.
- 26:19Well, you go, Vince, with what your game plans are and you just, you know, that's what you think you can do best against the team and that's what you've got to stay with.
- 26:26Down a wide to the right side of the set car. The other way, Jones to the second man out of the eye. Lydell Mitchell bouncing off people down to the stealer forty-eight.
- 26:33And he is going to be roped and pulled back there. JT Thomas, Jack Hamm in on the tackle.
- 26:37And also that good defensive safety man, Glenn Edwards helped out.
- 26:42It was just no hole at all, period.
- 26:44We're really coming up with a lot of third and fours and fives, though. That's tough.
- 26:48We have had a third and five. We've had a third and three. We've had a third and six. Now a third and four.
- 26:56The situation like this, though, every once in a while you cough that ball up. Let's see if he doesn't go back to Chester again. Right down over the middle.
- 27:03Down a wide right car. The other way, wings of left side is Lydell Mitchell. McCauley, the only man behind the quarterback, Jones.
- 27:10Third and four of the forty-eight of the Steelers. Back to throw. Burt looks, looks, throws it down the middle.
- 27:14Chester's gutted. He's in the grass with the tackler and down he goes at the Steelers forty-two yard line.
- 27:19The tackler was Jack Hamm. It's first down, Baltimore. And Artie Donovan called it right out of money, Vince.
- 27:25He said Chester right down the middle and that's where it was.
- 27:27Absolutely. He had the left linebacker playing.
- 27:30This guy, he's all over him. He's all over him like an octopus.
- 27:35At the Steelers forty-one yard line, Baltimore with a first down.
- 27:39Pittsburgh nine, Baltimore nothing. Time remaining first quarter, three minutes and nine seconds.
- 27:44Car wide left side, down a wide right. Chester a tight end, right end of the line.
- 27:49Eye formation, leaks the front man, Lydell the second man.
- 27:52Ideal time for the bomb. Ideal, ideal.
- 27:55But Jones play action, takes the hand off, rolls deep, rolls to his right, looks for her, see the lobs it up the Lydell.
- 28:00At the thirty, Lydell to the twenty-five. Mitchell on his feet at the Steelers, twenty yard line.
- 28:06And third had the option, he might have been able to run for half of that.
- 28:18Lydell's great elusive ability got him twice as much as he deserved.
- 28:23He got into the twenty, twenty-one yard game.
- 28:27Well, a Baltimore Colt drive that started at a Colt thirty-one yard line right now is to the Steelers twenty yard line.
- 28:34Car wide left, down a wide right. Eye formation is shown.
- 28:38Roosevelt leaks the front man in the eye, Lydell the second man.
- 28:41Chester tight end, right end of the line.
- 28:44Waiting for the snap from Mendenhall.
- 28:46Jones has the first man as leaks. He gets the hand off and powers over the left side down to about the Steelers sixteen.
- 28:52Where he is stacked up by LC Greenwood.
- 28:57Well, that's a good one there. It's, uh, he picked up what, four yards?
- 29:00Four is right. Yeah, that's better than one.
- 29:03That was his play before and a pass to Mitchell.
- 29:06That was where it was a busted play really.
- 29:08Jones had a roll out of there and he comes up with a first down.
- 29:13A year ago in a game like this, a fellow like Bert Jones might have been running with that football.
- 29:18Today a year's maturity is there.
- 29:20A year more of the smarts as they sometimes say and he hit his man, Lydell Mitchell.
- 29:25Second down, six of the Steelers sixteen. Split on the backfield. Nobody behind the quarterback, Jones.
- 29:29Jones right back to throw. No fake. Sets up. Good protection. Firing to the end zone. Roger Card. Touchdown.
- 29:35Touchdown five.
- 29:53Well, you take a seventeen yard bomb with a catch like that.
- 29:57A diving catch in the senders in Orr'sville, made famous by Jimmy Orr a few years ago.
- 30:03And you know, Vince, he really got hit on that play as he released that ball.
- 30:06I saw it.
- 30:07Well, Hardy Donovan kept saying, Vince, I wonder where Carr is. When's he going to go to Carr?
- 30:11I think he should go to Carr. He did go to Carr. The Colts around the board with a touchdown.
- 30:16And now Tony Lindhardt will try to add the point after touchdown out of a hold by Bill Troup.
- 30:20Snap. Spot. Kick. Good.
- 30:24No penalty flies. And there is a tie-down with the score. The Steelers nine and the Colts seven.
- 30:33Sweet handling cars.
- 30:37The 77 Mustang Cheese.
- 30:41With a package of handling features nowhere. The domestic car and its class offer.
- 30:45Four on the floor. Practice brakes. Staggered shocks. Wide stance and rack and pinion steering.
- 30:51All standard on every Mustang.
- 30:54Five one.
- 30:56You have to feel it in action.
- 30:59Sweet handling car. Mustang too.
- 31:03With one between the road and you.
- 31:07Just got a sweet handling car. Mustang too.
- 31:12With one between the road and you.
- 31:15See all the 77 Mustang too. Hacks back, notch backs, gears and the super coupes Mach 1 and Copa 2.
- 31:22Just drive one at your Ford dealer. When America needs a better idea, Ford puts it on wheels.
- 31:27See your local Ford dealer. The better idea guys.
- 31:34Well the first half of the first quarter definitely belonged to the Pittsburgh Steelers. They hung up a quick nine points.
- 31:40The second half of this quarter belongs to the Baltimore Colts. They have just come off a nine play drive that covered 69 yards and was culminated on a 16 touchdown pass.
- 31:49Jones to Roger Carr is now the Steelers nine. The Colts seven with a minute 17 remaining in the first quarter.
- 31:56Linhart to kick off. Downfield Theo Bell on the near sideline. Across the way it looks like it's Fuqua.
- 32:02And the middle man is again the fellow who got hurt in the opening kickoff Ernie Poe.
- 32:07Here comes Rocky Brab back but he's looking worse now than he did when he left the field.
- 32:11That's exactly right he is.
- 32:13Here is Linhart moving on the football. Swings a leg. Tony hits it pretty good. High and fairly deep.
- 32:18And it's taken down there by Theo Bell at the 10 to the 15. Laterally along the 20 to the 25.
- 32:23Cuts outside in the open and Theo Bell is up the midfield into cold territory.
- 32:28And it's going to be pulled out of bounds around the Baltimore 32 or 3 yard line.
- 32:33Theo Bell the returner and Ricky Thompson the man who prevented the touchdown.
- 32:38You know this week Linhart told me that's the ideal kickoff to the side of the field about the 8 yard line.
- 32:44That's the spot because the sprint men can get down to the balls high enough as that was.
- 32:48But he got away from that immediately broke it to the other side.
- 32:51And Pittsburgh is in super position at the Colts around the 32.
- 32:54That guy had to run a thousand yards. He ran away all the way to the other side of the field.
- 32:58He turned up first down Steelers at the Baltimore Colts 32 3 yard line.
- 33:04The turn the handoff to Franco Harris off the right side into the opening edge down to the 20 yard line.
- 33:09And then gang tackled to take him down at the 20 yard line.
- 33:11It looked like Jackie Wallace along with Stan White helped their role the big man over at the 20.
- 33:16And he's got a first down Steelers at the cold 20.
- 33:19This is a straight handoff. There's good blocking at the point of attack.
- 33:23He's missed by Chayonsky.
- 33:25It looks like Muffin is trying to get out of the way and here comes Wallace over.
- 33:29He's been gone for six.
- 33:31Not very fancy but first down at the 20.
- 33:34This time they've got number 82 John Stalworth wide left.
- 33:37Swan wide right they're set.
- 33:39The takeaway the give goes to Franco Harris into the middle.
- 33:41He fights for a running room and crashes inside the 15 yard line before being taken down by Fred Cook.
- 33:46And Freddy had a little help from guys like John Dutton and Bruce Laird.
- 33:50The gain is being marked right about at the 15 yard line.
- 33:54So it's second down and this guy's a great runner.
- 33:56He's a whole wasn't there at the point of attack and he just did a little bit to his right and picks up five yards.
- 34:01The big man that's really moving.
- 34:03Stalworth and Lewis keep bringing plays in and they're all in it.
- 34:07And we are now have come to the end of the first quarter with our score.
- 34:10The Steelers nine and the Colts seven.
- 34:16Well we're ready to go down to the second period of play.
- 34:18The Steelers lead at nine to seven.
- 34:20That touchdown pass Jones to Roger Carr to put the Colts on the board is the first touchdown against the Steelers in the first quarter this year.
- 34:28Check one of the highlights of this team consistently through the years been its ability.
- 34:32Baltimore that is to make a big defensive play when they need it.
- 34:35They scored they were back in it nine to seven.
- 34:37Pittsburgh got that great kickoff return and now they're down at the inside the 15 yard lines.
- 34:42If Baltimore if ever needs a big defensive play now to kind of get the momentum back a little bit.
- 34:47I would look right now Vince I would look to Bradshaw the tall pass off a play action.
- 34:53Let me see now.
- 34:55We've got Lewis wide to the left side and Swan wide to the right.
- 34:59Pucquah and Franco Harris are the running backs behind Bradshaw.
- 35:03The turn the give goes to Franco Harris right up the middle running over the top of people down to about the 11 yards to the six yard line goes Franco Harris.
- 35:10Evidently Bradshaw didn't hear me.
- 35:12Listen I tell you he wore the same number does he remind you of Jim Brown the way he runs.
- 35:17No he runs over people Jim Brown used to run around him.
- 35:20This guy is something else.
- 35:22It is first and goal Pittsburgh at the Baltimore just inside the Baltimore seven yard line.
- 35:28You know Vince you got to give the dudes up front on the offensive line to the Steelers a little bit of credit too because it was a hole that I could have run through then.
- 35:36And I couldn't run too fast.
- 35:40All ready to go with Pucquah and Franco Harris to split backfield.
- 35:43Nobody behind Bradshaw first down at the six Bradshaw gets it off the field off the right side he has chopped off his pins inside the five.
- 35:49It looked like Chyensky got a hunk of him and then Jack Wallace also field in there to take him down at about the LSE where they put the football down around the three yard line.
- 35:58I thought maybe the crowd who makes a lot of noise in the close end might help out here on the in the goal line stand.
- 36:05They're very quiet now and actually what Steelers offensive line is doing now they're just challenging ball is on the defensive front for Wallace coming out of the game Dan Dickel another linebacker goes in Pittsburgh lines up on the standard process.
- 36:18Shoulder to shoulder Pucquah and Franco Harris to give to Franco Harris left side down about the one and I don't know the angles too bad I can't call he didn't get him.
- 36:26He is shy about a foot or so down around the cold one yard line.
- 36:32Third down coming.
- 36:35Let's look and see if Bradshaw doesn't pull another play like watch his name to just stay stable.
- 36:40Why take a chance on getting hurt with Frank on the game.
- 36:43Give it to Franco and here we go.
- 36:45Okay.
- 36:46They have a new running back in there.
- 36:47Franco Harris is out.
- 36:49Reggie Harris is in along with Pucquah.
- 36:52They're down a goal of the one foot line the turn they get the Harrison off the right side touchdowns.
- 36:58Harrison off the right side went in without too much trouble.
- 37:02They just do Chayensky cook and Mike Barnes right out of there.
- 37:06They folded the left side of our defensive line right down into the middle.
- 37:12Leaving it up to Lloyd Mumford to try to hold them off and that was an over match.
- 37:18It just it's just good running.
- 37:19They just blows through people.
- 37:22Well the Steelers have run as well if not better than anybody in the league this year and they're showing the Baltimore Colts defensive unit that they didn't get here on good breaks and luck.
- 37:31Waiting for the point after touchdown.
- 37:33The snap still wait there's a snap the spot the kick is in the air and Jarrella does it this time.
- 37:38Let's see if there's a penalty fly down.
- 37:39There aren't any penalty flights.
- 37:40Kick is good and so the Steelers have added another seven with a score.
- 37:44The Steelers 16 the Colts seven.
- 37:46There's time out of Baltimore back in one minute.

- 38:49Well we're all ready for the kickoff and it'll be Jarrella kicking off to Howard Stevens down on the goal line.
- 38:55Chuck Thompson with Vince Bagley and we're happy to have the Hall of Famer Arthur Donovan with us this afternoon.
- 39:00Hey Vince, if I'm the coach of the coach I gotta move Howard Stevens up to the 15 yard line.
- 39:07Because I have a running head start on these dudes coming down.
- 39:10This guy isn't going to kick it any further than that.
- 39:12I hope he hears me.
- 39:14He hits it and missed it again.
- 39:15It bounces.
- 39:16Ron Lee picks it off to the 25 to the 30.
- 39:18To the 35.
- 39:19At the 40.
- 39:20To the 45.
- 39:21Up to the 47 yard line goes Ron Lee.
- 39:24Once he made up his mind there wasn't anywhere to duck and dodge.
- 39:26Lee put his head down and just carried it to people.
- 39:29Donnie Shell was among those to take him down at the Baltimore 47 first down.
- 39:34Outstanding kicking tool.
- 39:36Jarrella limping off.
- 39:39Didn't hurt him with a 45 yard field goal.
- 39:42I think it hurt his pride.
- 39:43Roger Carr wide left wide to the right.
- 39:46Glenn Dowdy Roosevelt League's front man in the eye.
- 39:48The second man Lydell Mitchell.
- 39:50Jones and the Colts are down and set.
- 39:52Waiting for the take away.
- 39:54The gift to Lydell.
- 39:55The second man he stumbled and cut into a hole.
- 39:56Cuts across the 50 down to the stealer 47 yard line.
- 39:59Goes Lydell Mitchell before he is taken down by mean Joe Green.
- 40:03And also assisting big number 78 Dwight White.
- 40:05Now they ran that play to the weak side Donnie.
- 40:08Why was that effective where he was running to the strong side?
- 40:11I don't know but I'll tell you the blocking at the point of attack Vince was it.
- 40:15And they figured maybe they can do something.
- 40:17As I said before if we're going to do anything Mitchell's got to have a good day.
- 40:20He picked up six yards then.
- 40:22Dowdy wide left wide right car.
- 40:24Eye formation this time.
- 40:25Leaks the front man.
- 40:26Lydell the second man.
- 40:27Second and fourth the stealer 47.
- 40:29Jones fake gives to Lydell.
- 40:30Off the right side hit at the 45 and pulled down.
- 40:33The guy on the top of the pile was Jack Hamm.
- 40:35But I don't think he got the tackle credit.
- 40:37And on the bottom of the pile you got two or three of the stealers rolling up out of there.
- 40:41Number 63 in on the tackle Ernie Holmes.
- 40:45Gain of two third down and about two.
- 40:49Vince that's a little bit different than the third and five and six and so on.
- 40:53Let's see if Jones doesn't come out play action and throw that long one.
- 40:57Who's in there?
- 40:58Lydell is out.
- 40:59Macaulay is in along with Roosevelt leaks.
- 41:01Dowdy a wing on the right side double tight ends.
- 41:03Third down and two with the stealer 45.
- 41:06Waiting for the snap to Bert Jones.
- 41:08Still waiting.
- 41:09Still waiting.
- 41:10Turns gives to Macaulay.
- 41:11Macaulay dives over the right side and I don't know whether he's made it or not.
- 41:14It's a little bit too close to say.
- 41:16He may have come up a little short.
- 41:18We'll know when they untangle it more correctly and accurately when the official spots the football.
- 41:23Might be a little short.
- 41:25All right now what do you do here?
- 41:26Do you punt the ball and cut it?
- 41:27Put them in a hole they scored every time they had it.
- 41:29You got a half a yard to go on fourth.
- 41:33David Lee has been great getting a ball down there on the inside the 10 yard line.
- 41:38Right?
- 41:39Right.
- 41:40Well why not do the same thing?
- 41:41And I think Chuck.
- 41:42What's his name?
- 41:43Hasebo is smart doing this.
- 41:44It's fourth down and less than a yard.
- 41:47Downfield Theo Bell who came back 60 yards with a kick off a moment ago is waiting for
- 41:51the David Lee punt.
- 41:52Theo is all around the 10 yard line of the Steelers.
- 41:55Let's see whether David Lee intends to hang it up for there.
- 41:58He'll kick it to Bell whether he'll kick it out of bounds.
- 42:00After Stan White who's quarterback on the snap and they've got a 10 man rush have the
- 42:05Steelers.
- 42:06They are going to pressure hopeful of blocking.
- 42:08Morris Blue takes a last look still has a snap now snap.
- 42:11Snap is perfect.
- 42:12No pressure.
- 42:13They got to return.
- 42:14And David Lee angles toward the near sideline coming over Theo Bell.
- 42:16It's going to go out of bounds inside the 10.
- 42:19At the nine yard line David Lee has kicked it out of bounds.
- 42:22Oh we got a fight going on down here.
- 42:25Number 58 and 33.
- 42:27Go at him.
- 42:28That's Jack Lambert and Randy Hall.
- 42:30Well you'd trade those two wouldn't you?
- 42:32I got news for you.
- 42:33Yeah but if you're a Steeler you don't fight in front of the coach bench you're crazy.
- 42:37You do if you're Jack Lambert you fight anywhere.
- 42:40I got news for you.
- 42:42He'd give a good accounting of himself no matter whose bench he was fighting in front
- 42:45of.
- 42:46He is just a I think one of truly one of the very best most aggressive strong physical
- 42:51domineering middle linebackers I've ever seen.
- 42:53I think Tracy could have taken him on.
- 42:55Maybe I'll tell you there's a little feeling and a little emotion in this contest with
- 42:5910.57 remaining in the first half and the Steelers leading by a count of 16 to 7.
- 43:05Something against Pittsburgh at the nine yard line who cares.
- 43:12That is to say at their nine yard line who cares.
- 43:15Nah we will take the penalty.
- 43:17Here it is but darn it.
- 43:18Number 87 offense in motion.
- 43:21Now the tight end number 87 was in motion that's Larry Brown and the Colts have as already
- 43:25suggested declined the penalty at second and nine Steelers at their 10.
- 43:29Lewis and number 82 John Stallworth shuttled in and out with plays and now Lewis is in there
- 43:35going wide left and Lynn Swan is wide to the right.
- 43:37Cuqua and Franco Harris running backs behind the quarterback Bradshaw.
- 43:42Down is set.
- 43:43Take away Bradshaw wants to throw on second and nine.
- 43:45No pressure going for broke here comes the bomb.
- 43:47Franklin Lewis is there and he makes a.
- 43:50He tried to make the catch and just couldn't handle it this time right alongside him.
- 43:53It looked like it was number 20 or 25 Ray Oldham went up in the air.
- 43:57The ball slightly under throw.
- 43:59Well let me tell you something this guy's got a lot of a lot of pride in his offensive
- 44:04line because he's got all the time in the world to throw that ball and sooner or later
- 44:09he's going to come up with six more if they don't deck him a couple of times.
- 44:12So the coverage a lot better that time but as Chuck said to Dunnie the ball isn't thrown
- 44:16quite far enough.
- 44:17I think I'll lay all of that pretty good coverage behind him though.
- 44:20All of them might have gotten the ball had he thrown it for it.
- 44:22I don't know if it's made an effort to get his hands on.
- 44:25Let's see if we don't put this time.
- 44:27All right.
- 44:28Stallworth wide to the left side swan wide to the right of the backfield nobody behind
- 44:31quarterback Bradshaw Cuqua and Franco Harris down a set.
- 44:34Take away Bradshaw wants to throw a shallow drop to the goal line fire down the middle
- 44:37caught by swan and swan has tackled at the 20 yard line for what appears to be a stealer
- 44:42first down.
- 44:43Chayanski made the tackle but swan made a beautiful leaping grab for a first down of
- 44:48the 20 and extended the ball to get the first down as a great play by swan.
- 44:53Not only the catch but it was right on the front of money to his presence.
- 44:57He's building in there.
- 44:58Yep.
- 44:59And he takes a shot.
- 45:02It is first down Pittsburgh at the 20 yard line.
- 45:05The Steelers have scored every time they've had a football of the first half of the ball
- 45:08game today.
- 45:09Why to the right one.
- 45:10Why to the left is Lewis this time.
- 45:12Cuqua and Franco Harris with the running backs they're down and set.
- 45:16Take away the gift of Franco Harris stutter through a little bit of a hole and got stripped
- 45:19up coming through there.
- 45:20The cold defensive front forward just shut off the play down on the bottom of the pile
- 45:24Freddie Cook and you can look for Joe Airman he'll have to be down there somewhere.
- 45:28You really don't see a lot of the activity of Airman but he is normally right in the
- 45:32middle of anything that comes along that line.
- 45:34If Lewis had made the tackle it would have been a two yard loss.
- 45:37He's the guy to force the play and he forced Franco Harris to cut back into where the flow
- 45:41is going over.
- 45:42So you know you need help out there and he got it.
- 45:44It is a team game second down nine Steelers at their own 21 yard line.
- 45:48Swan wide right.
- 45:49Stallworth wide left again it's Cuqua and Harris.
- 45:52Rocky Blyer out with a foot injury.
- 45:54We don't know whether he'll be able to return it up.
- 45:56It's Franco Harris the carry bounces out around the left end into the daylight up to the 25
- 45:59and caught from behind crossing the 25 yard line by Jim Chayunski again the active middle
- 46:04line backer of the Baltimore Colts.
- 46:06But that Harris is really something to behold.
- 46:08Dutton was also around the ball.
- 46:10He fakes inside and then bounces outside in the manner of a scatback.
- 46:14Harris has got more angles in the geometry book the way he moves.
- 46:18Well the gain is good for four yards.
- 46:20It's third and five Steelers at their own 25.
- 46:23That's not a bad line by the Hall of Famer down the line there Vince.
- 46:26I like this all week on that.
- 46:28More angles in the geometry book.
- 46:30All right third down five Steelers is a 25 yard line.
- 46:33Lewis wide left Swan the other way back the throw goes Bratch on no pressure.
- 46:36That's time drills it to Franco Harris out in the flat.
- 46:38Franco one on one with Sam White down he goes at the 30 yard line.
- 46:41He may have a first down again.
- 46:43That's just pure second effort too believe me.
- 46:46And Stan did a good job you know making sure he made the tackle but Harris had the momentum to get the first down.
- 46:54We got to start doing something on defense believe me.
- 46:57We got to stop pushing.
- 46:58We got to change up our defenses around a little bit because you give this guy just kind of time to throw the ball.
- 47:03He's going to eat you up.
- 47:05I'll tell you what is either put some pressure on him or go get him a rocking chair.
- 47:09It is Steeler ball first down at the Steeler 30 and they lead at 16 to 7 of the Colts.
- 47:15Front four really have not been close to putting pressure on Bradshaw yet.
- 47:20It is stall with wide left side.
- 47:22Here's an inside handoff to Frank Fuqua off the right side he goes pulled down by the linebacker moving in quickly Jim Chayensky.
- 47:29Yeah really doing a pretty good job against the rush.
- 47:31They are that.
- 47:32They really are but as Donnie keeps saying we've got to get to the passer and this may be a passing down second and about a long seven.
- 47:42Frank Lewis comes in.
- 47:44Stallworth goes out Lewis and Stallworth shuttle plays in for quarterback Bradshaw.
- 47:49I think this was a request of the part of Terry.
- 47:51He just went to the coach and all they had a little bit of a meeting and he said look coach I think we can do a better job if you do it that way.
- 47:56And the Steelers have you know been happy to oblige.
- 47:58Indeed this defense were vulnerable. Here's a rollback by Bradshaw sets up the fire.
- 48:02Sideliner coming it is caught and downed at about the 47 yard line.
- 48:06Right in front of the Colts bench it's Lynn Swann on the receiving end covering him with Lloyd Mumford.
- 48:11First down Pittsburgh at their own 47 and for WSBA in York and all of our network stations we'll pause now for station identification.
- 48:19This is the Metro Media Baltimore Colts football network.
- 48:22With the best collegiate coverage follow the University of Maryland Terrapins on 68 WCBM Metro Media for Baltimore.
- 48:32At the 47.
- 48:36Stallworth wide left Swann wide right.
- 48:39Here's the turn give off to Pucla.
- 48:40Pucla comes into the. Harris comes into the middle breaks into the clear at the 40.
- 48:43Harris is in the foot race trying to beat Ray Oldham.
- 48:46Oldham slows him up and then came back with a second effort.
- 48:49Oldham stops him inside the five.
- 48:5347 yard first off by Franco Harris and Oldham slowed him up.
- 48:58He tried to put a move on Oldham and that gave Ray a chance to make a second move on Harris and he took him down.
- 49:04That was just a quick track up, trapped up the middle.
- 49:06Actually nobody even got a hand on Harris coming through the line.
- 49:10And this goes to show you know during the week these guys are saying what they were going to do and all that.
- 49:14Well they haven't done anything yet. Now last played at Bradshaw Court through the closest guy all day to him was Dutton.
- 49:21And he knew he'd get about three yards away from him.
- 49:23So they're going to start to buckle down and start playing football from the Steeler nine.
- 49:28They have now come to the Baltimore cold four first and goal Bradshaw gets off to a back Cunningham and he is going to be hit at the Harrison rather hit it about the three yard line for no game.
- 49:37The ball carry again Reggie Harrison number 46 who scored one of the Steeler touchdowns this afternoon and stopped at about the four yard line.
- 49:44Second and goal.
- 49:46Vince I think some of the fans down there with their radios on and their TVs down better make what if I make a noise.
- 49:53Well they better start doing something.
- 49:56You know it's straight. This is a rather conservative kind of a team Pittsburgh.
- 50:00Nothing fancy at all. But boy they just bring it down.
- 50:03Harrison and Pucall are the setbacks and they got Stallworth as a wing to the left side.
- 50:07Second down a goal from the cold three. The give goes to Harrison off the left side.
- 50:11He may have fumbled a football that's a big pile up for it at the two.
- 50:14We got it. Baltimore has got the ball.
- 50:23Dan White.
- 50:27There's a break in the action with the score. The Steelers 16 the cold seven.
- 50:32We'll pause now for this message.
- 50:34You want to start reading Paul.
- 50:36Hi I'm no radio announcer. I'm Paul McNabb at Donut Baker and the lottery's first millionaire.
- 50:42And I still play the lottery especially the new weekly super 50 cent game that has two chances to win the million dollar prize.
- 50:49That's one more chance than I had when 50 cents made me a millionaire.
- 50:54This is Paul McNabb who really knows you've got to play to win.
- 50:59You want to trade jobs.
- 51:03During this busy holiday season we at Household Finance would like to suggest that you take a few minutes to remember something.
- 51:11That this is the season of giving, of sharing, of making others happy.
- 51:16We wish you all the best of this season and please remember that we're here to help your family with its wants, its needs, its dreams all year round.
- 51:26Household Finance an equal opportunity lender.
- 51:34Well a little while ago as a matter of fact the last time the Steelers had the ball inside the cold five Vince was talking about the fact that the cold defensive unit had continually turned up with a big play this year and they needed to make it that time.
- 51:45Well that time they didn't make it. This time they did make the big play. Harrison fumbled.
- 51:50Stan White recovered. Baltimore has the ball at their own two and the Steelers had gone 89 yards and 10 plays only to fumble to the cold.
- 51:59Some of the Steelers coaches in a state of shock over on the other side of the field.
- 52:02I don't think Harrison ever had control of it. It looked like he was juggling it as he took the hand off and then of course when it's loose like that they punched at it and White got it.
- 52:11Well Baltimore ball first down at the Baltimore two yard line.
- 52:15And they come out into a standard pro set shoulder to shoulder. Roosevelt leaks and Lydell Mitchell car wide left down the other way.
- 52:21Jones looks over the Steeler defense. They fake a blitz. The turn the gift goes to the second. Mitchell breaks through. Up over the 10 to the 11 yard line goes Lydell.
- 52:29And Mr. Russell, Andy by name, made the tackle.
- 52:32What they did is they blew Jermeen Joe Green right out of there. They ran right at him. Got a good block on him and Mitchell picks up the first down. Almost the first down.
- 52:40It is second down and about a yard for Baltimore at their own 11 but a little breathing room now.
- 52:49Second down about a yard. Jones whips him out of the huddle. Again this time Dowdy and Carr go wide to the right side of the set.
- 52:58Tight end on the left end of the line for Baltimore.
- 53:00Waiting for the snap. The Jones turns. Gifts to Lydell. Lydell spins through a little bit of a hole and gets chopped off his pins after picking up the first down around the 14-13 yard line.
- 53:09It looks as though he's got enough for a first down. It is so indicated. Isn't that fancy?
- 53:15They took a longer time in the huddle than they seemed to and that play right there and that's a call a 25 hunch they always run.
- 53:23Just off the right side. Now why would they have taken longer?
- 53:26He was saying to Mitchell, hold on to that ball. I guess because you know it's dangerous down here.
- 53:31And also give me time to get out of the way.
- 53:35Carr watched left. Dowdy wide to the right. Standard process shoulder to shoulder. The backfield leaks and Lydell.
- 53:41Mitchell waiting for the snap to Jones. He fakes. Rolls back to throw. Back inside the five. Takes his time. Throws the bomb to Dowdy.
- 53:47It's over his head at the cold 45 yard line. Incomplete pass. Just a little too strong intended for Dowdy.
- 53:53Second and 10 Baltimore at their 13.
- 53:55You know in the drive that took them down the field for the score. I'm talking about the Colts. It was a lot of poise in that drive as they drove most of the length of the field.
- 54:02They threw to a lot of different people down they hadn't thrown to. But I think maybe this will keep us in it.
- 54:06The variety of receivers. Donnie, do you agree with that?
- 54:09Yeah and this also Jones had time to throw the ball there. It was good offensive pass detection.
- 54:14And actually Dowdy he had made a move and Jones had gotten the ball and they have another first down.
- 54:20This time Jones has a split backfield. Nobody directly behind the quarterback. Dowdy right side Carr left side.
- 54:25The takeaway the gib goes to Lydell. Hitting his own backfield.
- 54:28He really got belted in his own backfield and taken down at the line of scrimmage.
- 54:32And the man who ripped in there might have been mean Joe Green.
- 54:34It was. He made a heck of a play on that.
- 54:36He really did. Looks like he took Pratt and a few other people right with him as he went in.
- 54:41Now Don McCauley is coming into the Baltimore cold backfield.
- 54:44Roosevelt leaks has come out. Third down 10 Baltimore at their 13.
- 54:50Baltimore and the Steelers to determine which team has the right to play for the championship of the American Football Conference.
- 54:56And I'll tell you something there are two awfully good football teams going at it this afternoon.
- 55:00Car wide right wide left Dowdy. They're in a double wing actually.
- 55:04The only man behind the quarterback is Don McCauley. Jones looks over the stealer defense.
- 55:08They're a down four the takeaway by Jones. He thinks.
- 55:10Too much time.
- 55:11Whirls are blowing down there and we'll see what happens.
- 55:14It probably took too much time against Baltimore. That's exactly right.
- 55:19Thirty seconds clock ran out.
- 55:23You got to keep your eye on that clock all the time.
- 55:27I've been.
- 55:28Yeah baby. Now we have 15 yards to go on third. It's even tougher.
- 55:32Wonder how long it'll be before they have a gong that sounds when that clock runs out.
- 55:36You know.
- 55:37They can imagine having a helmet on and hearing that gong.
- 55:42Oh my.
- 55:43The referee walked the ball back inside the five.
- 55:50It's a five yard walk off the 13 to the eight.
- 55:53Well they know they're on television. You see they got to put a good show on.
- 55:56Pat Harriot had a good.
- 55:57Haggerty a very good official is laughing at himself.
- 56:00I didn't hear what he said. I'm sorry.
- 56:06A delay of game I presume.
- 56:08Oh.
- 56:10From the eight yard line.
- 56:11From the eight yard line to just third down at 15.
- 56:14Let's see if we don't put kicks.
- 56:16McCauley and Lydell are the running backs behind the quarterback Jones wide right car wide left dowdy.
- 56:22And Chester split a little bit on the left end of the line.
- 56:24Third at 15 Jones rolls to his left wants to throw has a little time ducks for a pressure and then gets nailed back at the two yard line.
- 56:31All over in big number 78.
- 56:34White white Russell was also there.
- 56:38And mean Joe Green set the you know kind of set the table and they finished it off.
- 56:44Jones is saying right now for God's sake somebody hit him.
- 56:47Do something.
- 56:48Now we got a real problem.
- 56:49Lee's gonna have to fight with his foot on the end line and they'll put 10 men up I guess.
- 56:54I would think so.
- 56:55The ball is spotted back at the two yard line and David Lee is putting it about the goal line.
- 57:00The snap here comes David Lee's punt.
- 57:02He hits a high booming spiral coming back on it as Lynn Swann at the cold 45.
- 57:07Laterally along it makes a cut over the 40 and down as a hit by the penalty.
- 57:10By the penalty by another penalty by go down we'll get 30 on the 35 of the 40 yard line.
- 57:15And number 56 of the Baltimore Colts at Seminini is madder than a wet hen.
- 57:19Whatever that is.
- 57:22But he was really upset.
- 57:24And apparently the reason he was so upset was because some of the penalty flags personal foul clipping against the feeler.
- 57:31We get 30 yards.
- 57:33Now you don't get 30 gets a choice.
- 57:36We'll take the one from back here around the 39 or 45 yard line and put Pittsburgh back in its own territory.
- 57:42If you get.
- 57:43Well there's a timeout with the score of the feeler 16 the Colts 7.
- 57:47When you shop for a 1977 full size car you may get a full size shock.
- 57:53Because some car makers are cutting down their full size cars making them narrower shorter lighter.
- 57:58They'll offer only the cut down size.
- 58:00But Ford has a better idea choice.
- 58:03A full size Ford LTD that kept its size and the all new trim size LTD 2.
- 58:09The quiet riding full size LTD offers what its major competition doesn't.
- 58:13More trunk space more hip and shoulder room and a longer wheelbase.
- 58:17If you prefer a trimmer size choose the new LTD 2.
- 58:21With LTD's kind of quality and comfort in a.
- 58:30For sportier car at a trimmer price some car makers will offer only cut down sizes in 77.
- 58:36But Ford offers a choice full size Ford LTD trim size LTD 2.
- 58:42Just drive one today.
- 58:50Local Ford Jeepers.
- 58:51The better idea guys.
- 58:56From the stealer 46 Bradshaw thrown a pass incomplete and a penalty flag dropped into play.
- 59:02Personal foul against the Baltimore Colts.
- 59:10Lloyd Mumford may have been the offender.
- 59:12We'll know when Pat Haggerty informs us after he walks off the real estate.
- 59:16Then we'll find out who the guilty party is.
- 59:18It was Mumford number 42 I'm almost sure.
- 59:21Well it wasn't against the guy hitting a passer because nobody's done that today.
- 59:25No no.
- 59:27He could have ate a sandwich then.
- 59:29Here's the announcement right now tune in.
- 59:31Personal foul defense first down.
- 59:35Personal foul defense first down.
- 59:37Who was it Haggerty?
- 59:41And Ted Marche-Abrilta a little upset with the officiating at the moment.
- 59:45As the Steelers have a first down now at the Baltimore Colts 39 yard line.
- 59:51And it is Franco Harris and Fuqua.
- 59:53Fuqua the ball carry off the right side.
- 59:55They snow in there and stop him around the 36 yard line with guys like Chyonsky up on the top of the pile.
- 1:00:00And down on the bottom of the pile the last guy getting up appears to be Fred Cook.
- 1:00:04And the gain is from the 39 to the 36 second and seven.
- 1:00:09He'll come right back with that long pass now Vince.
- 1:00:12Boy what time he's had.
- 1:00:14Unbelievable.
- 1:00:15The last one he could have ate a hero sandwich not just a plain sandwich.
- 1:00:20Second and seven for the Steelers the ball at the Colts 36.
- 1:00:23And there's a time odd being whistled for down on the field.
- 1:00:26Two minutes.
- 1:00:27We've come to the two minute warning.
- 1:00:29That's exactly what happens here in Baltimore.
- 1:00:31There's the two minute warning back in 60 seconds.
- 1:00:34One of these days you're from the Tri-Colts 45.
- 1:00:38And you'll be sorry for all the times you did.
- 1:00:48Sooner or later you're gonna drink the Colts 45.
- 1:00:52And you'll be sorry for all the times you waited.
- 1:00:59Sooner or later you're gonna want to change your place.
- 1:01:04And you'll be glad to know Colts 45 is waiting.
- 1:01:10Colts has been waiting about a thousand years now.
- 1:01:15And you'll be sorry for all the times you waited.
- 1:01:21Colts 45 malt liquor.
- 1:01:24A completely unique experience.
- 1:01:27Colts 45 malt liquor.
- 1:01:28Product of Carling National Breweries, Inc. Baltimore, Maryland.
- 1:01:38Well into the final two minutes of the first half.
- 1:01:41The Steelers leading by a count of 16 to 7.
- 1:01:43The Baltimore Colts have just not been able to dominate this steel curtain, the Steelers defense.
- 1:01:48They have been awesome at times.
- 1:01:50And offensively the Steelers front line, their offensive unit has been doing a simply magnificent job against the defensive unit of the Baltimore Colts.
- 1:01:58Bradshaw has just, he's not even got the uniform dirty yet.
- 1:02:02With a second and seven at the Baltimore 36.
- 1:02:04Gives the few, but sweeps to the left side. Rips down inside the 30 to the 28 yard line goes Frenchy.
- 1:02:09He's very close to another Steeler first down and we'll wait for the indication from the official.
- 1:02:14And they put that football down. It's right about at the 29 yard line.
- 1:02:18And it's so close that I believe the officials now take time to measure.
- 1:02:22Chyansky made the tackle. We'll see whether or not the sweep of the left side by Fuqua has picked up another Steeler first down.
- 1:02:28Huh?
- 1:02:29Vince Fuqua showing off in front of his Morgan State alumni.
- 1:02:33I was going to say. That's what happened.
- 1:02:34He's been in the league eight years. He used to hear a lot about him when he was a young player.
- 1:02:37But they mentioned Morgan a lot lately in relation to, he made the first down.
- 1:02:41Is he the guy that wears his shoes with fish in his heels?
- 1:02:43That's the guy.
- 1:02:44Huh?
- 1:02:45Yeah, he's one of the flashier addresses in the league.
- 1:02:47You never shot and fight him. You know where.
- 1:02:48I'll tell you, he's a heck of a guy, is Frenchy. He's really a dude.
- 1:02:51I've been with him a couple of times. A fun loving guy and a pretty good football player, is Frenchy.
- 1:02:57First down, Steeler at the Baltimore 29.
- 1:02:59Linds-Fawn wide to the right side and now at Stallworth wide to the left.
- 1:03:04Fuqua and Harris, the running backs are down and set.
- 1:03:07Take away, the give goes to Harris.
- 1:03:08Harris is hit by Fred Cook in his own backfield and stopped right at the 30 yard line.
- 1:03:12I think somebody forgot who they were blocking on that, Johnny.
- 1:03:15We just.
- 1:03:16In fact, Cook was in there so fast, he almost used the handoff.
- 1:03:18Yeah, I was going to say, the ball was a little loose. I wish somebody noticed it in there.
- 1:03:22Well, you talk about how good a job Fuqua's doing and he is.
- 1:03:24But how about Mr. Harris on the board with 14 carries and 93 yards in this, the first half.
- 1:03:30Lydell Mitchell has carried it 11 times for 35 yards.
- 1:03:34Lewis wide left, wide right, Swann. A standard pro set backfield, second and 11th Steelers.
- 1:03:39Bradshaw back to throw again, sets up, has time, lobs it all around it, Swann for the touchdown.
- 1:03:45Linds-Fawn put a move on Mumford, Mumford fell down and Swann went in without anybody near him.
- 1:03:51Touchdown Steelers who are just running over the cold for the first half.
- 1:03:55Chuck, you can say anything you want. It's sort of embarrassing for Mumford to have to cover a guy like that.
- 1:04:00But hell, you don't get it. The guy doesn't have to throw the ball real quick.
- 1:04:04He doesn't get any pressure at all put on him.
- 1:04:06Hey, a lot of defensive backs are going to get embarrassed.
- 1:04:11Well, it is now up to 22.
- 1:04:14And we'll see if Jarella can add the 23rd point. We're inside the two minute mark.
- 1:04:19And Bradshaw has just had absolutely letter perfect protection from his offensive line.
- 1:04:25The sack pack of the Colts haven't been able to do anything.
- 1:04:28Not a thing have they been able to do insofar as putting even a little bit of pressure on Bradshaw.
- 1:04:34Donnie, why would you figure they wouldn't have blitzed up to this point?
- 1:04:37You figure they'd pick up the blitzers and burn you even worse?
- 1:04:40Well, maybe, but I can't understand why they're doing this.
- 1:04:43They're going to have a four man rush. They're not getting any pressure from anywhere.
- 1:04:48Maybe a little bit, you see.
- 1:04:51He's coming from the blind side and Bradshaw doesn't see that to even bother him.
- 1:04:56Right, absolutely right. And of course, you've got to do something.
- 1:05:00Well, they walked off a penalty against the Steelers.
- 1:05:03And now the point after touchdown kick from the 15 is in the air.
- 1:05:06It looks pretty good. No penalty flags are down.
- 1:05:08And the score is on the board with about 53 seconds here on the first half remaining.
- 1:05:13The Steelers are handing it to the Colts.
- 1:05:1523-7, time out with the score, Pittsburgh 23, Baltimore 7.
- 1:05:19Equitable Trust Bank, Equitable Trust Bank, where good ideas just keep on happening.
- 1:05:30There's more than one way to use a Bank of America.
- 1:05:33Equitable wants you to understand how versatile it is.
- 1:05:37For instance, there are Bank of America companion checks.
- 1:05:41They look like personal checks. You can use them anywhere personal checks are taken,
- 1:05:46even at places that don't accept credit cards.
- 1:05:49And companion checks are one of the most private and convenient ways for you to borrow money.
- 1:05:54Only you and the bank know about it.
- 1:05:57You can make better banking choices when you understand your options.
- 1:06:01And we understand that at Equitable.
- 1:06:04There will be so many good ideas here at Equitable Trust Bank, Equitable Trust Bank,
- 1:06:13where good ideas just keep on happening.
- 1:06:18Number FDIC.
- 1:06:21Well, Roy Jarrella, who is supposed to kick off for the Steelers,
- 1:06:25apparently is bonded by that groin injury that we mentioned a little earlier.
- 1:06:29And it looks as though he'll not kick off.
- 1:06:31Manfield is out there to kick off. Ray Manfield, offensive center, a 12-year veteran from Washington.
- 1:06:38How about that? How about that?
- 1:06:40Jarrella can hit those chip shots if that 45-yarder was a chip shot, a field goal he made.
- 1:06:46But they talked about he was the one fellow who they were concerned about physically,
- 1:06:49and he can't kick off deep. His kickoffs haven't been good at all.
- 1:06:53Now Manfield and Howard Stevens is playing him up at the 14-yard line,
- 1:06:57but he won't be too sharp in his first shot at it.
- 1:07:01Look at that. 56 is going to kick it off. Not Manfield.
- 1:07:04Oh, yeah, that's Manfield.
- 1:07:05That's Manfield.
- 1:07:0656? Yes, sir.
- 1:07:07Manfield is lined up behind the football, all ready to go,
- 1:07:11and he's a straightaway orthodox type of a kicker.
- 1:07:13He missed it, shanked it.
- 1:07:15Better get it.
- 1:07:16Ron Lee takes it out of bounds at about the 34-yard line of the Baltimore Colts.
- 1:07:21We're getting outstanding field position, but we're not doing anything.
- 1:07:25The Steelers took only a minute and 45 seconds to go 59 yards in four plays.
- 1:07:30They have scored three, let's make it four of the five times they've handled a football today.
- 1:07:35The Steelers have scored either by touchdown or field goal.
- 1:07:37And the fifth time they dropped the ball on the one foot line.
- 1:07:40Oh, that's exactly right.
- 1:07:43All ready to go at the 35-yard line.
- 1:07:45The Colts are in possession, and they have just been manhandled by the Steelers.
- 1:07:48The Steelers, right to this moment in the football game,
- 1:07:51have been too much football team for the Colts to handle.
- 1:07:54They've been just that good.
- 1:07:55Back to throw, Jones.
- 1:07:56Drills it down the middle.
- 1:07:57Over the head, intercepted by number 27, Glen Edwards of the Steelers.
- 1:08:01Down to the Colts, 35, and out of bounds goes Edwards.
- 1:08:04They've got enough time to get another one.
- 1:08:0643 seconds, that's plenty of time for them.
- 1:08:08This ball overthrown Dowdy right into the hands of Glen Edwards.
- 1:08:12What do they say, Vince?
- 1:08:13When you're good, you're real good.
- 1:08:15When you're bad, you're really bad.
- 1:08:18Well, I'll tell you, there is many doubt.
- 1:08:20You wonder when you look at this first half of the football game, Arthur,
- 1:08:22you wonder how the Colts got into the playoff game.
- 1:08:25Well, I don't know, but it hasn't been their day.
- 1:08:29Of course, I don't think they've played good in the last four out of five games.
- 1:08:32That's my own opinion.
- 1:08:33And now they're playing against the real good football team,
- 1:08:36and they're maybe not that good.
- 1:08:37That's the point I was trying to make.
- 1:08:38The Steelers are just that good that they make anybody look bad.
- 1:08:41Back to throw goes Bradshaw.
- 1:08:42He sets up.
- 1:08:43Penalty flag is dropped.
- 1:08:44A little bit of pressure thrown to Lynn Swann in the clear at the 30.
- 1:08:47Swann to the 25, outside to the 20, and out of bounds at about the 19 goes Swann.
- 1:08:51That's going to be our best defense is the flag.
- 1:08:54Oh, the penalty flag is going against Pittsburgh holding.
- 1:08:58It has been, really.
- 1:08:59We said that facetiously early in the game,
- 1:09:01but the only time we've been able to stop them or move ourselves is because of penalty.
- 1:09:07Vince, sometimes it's better to be lucky than good, right?
- 1:09:10Oh, yeah, I'll tell you, I wish we got lucky and picked one off and get within, you know, eight, nine.
- 1:09:16Usually, the only way you get a chance to pick one off, here's Haggerty.
- 1:09:21Holding, number 50, offense.
- 1:09:24First down, Jim Clack, guilty of holding, I believe he said.
- 1:09:30He said the only way you get lucky is by putting pressure on the passer.
- 1:09:33Just howling feather him tonight back there, getting caught holding.
- 1:09:38So now it's the Steeler ball at the Baltimore Colt 44-yard line on that holding penalty.
- 1:09:45Down and 20.
- 1:09:46Bradshaw in under center, the time remaining about 38 seconds.
- 1:09:49Takeaway by Bradshaw, deep drop, wants a throw, and he runs up into the pocket and into the arms of Joe Airman,
- 1:09:54who made the tackle, and Bradshaw comes up calling for time.
- 1:09:59They made the tackle back around the Steeler, 48-yard line, and Bradshaw calls time to save 28 seconds that's on the clock.
- 1:10:08And the only way Freddie Cook had some outside pressure,
- 1:10:11Bradshaw ran up and ran right into Joe Airman.
- 1:10:15That's the only time Bradshaw's been forced out of the pocket at all, and I think it was his own decision.
- 1:10:20He didn't like the receiver's positions down here.
- 1:10:23He ran up to take another look, and then they got him.
- 1:10:25And that's the first time he has seen how dusty the field can be.
- 1:10:28And he was singing, Ma, Ma, Ma, don't allow no music playing.
- 1:10:32He sees the commercials, don't he?
- 1:10:34Oh, yeah.
- 1:10:36Well, in the first half of the football game, it's just been, you know, completely the Steelers.
- 1:10:40The Baltimore Colts mounted one drive, but the Steelers, every time but one,
- 1:10:44that they have had the football in the first half have gone into score,
- 1:10:47and Baltimore has been powerless to prevent it.
- 1:10:49They have just not been able to, in the first half of the game, do anything about stopping the Steelers.
- 1:10:54And 23 points on the board for Pittsburgh means that the second half of the football game
- 1:10:58is going to be some kind of an uphill battle for the Baltimore Colts.
- 1:11:02Yeah, coming back against the best defense in the league, playing catch-up.
- 1:11:05Boy, that's a real tough road.
- 1:11:07Hey, Vince, they told me that this guy, Bradshaw, recorded a song, I'm So Lonely I Could Die.
- 1:11:12Well, he's been pretty lonely out there today.
- 1:11:16No blue shirts around him, for sure, none of it.
- 1:11:19I hate those singers.
- 1:11:21Second down and 28 for the Steelers at their own 48.
- 1:11:24And they've got Lewis and Swann, Sedwyde to the right, and Stallworth, Wyde to left.
- 1:11:28Bradshaw on the handoff to Franco Harris on the draw.
- 1:11:31Harris is in the open down of the 40-yard line in the clear,
- 1:11:34and Darrell Lewis tries to get to him, and Lewis makes the tackle
- 1:11:37and rolls him out of bounds with the 22-yard line with 17 seconds on the clock.
- 1:11:42Just seems the Steelers are able to do it any way they want to.
- 1:11:44They can run at you or throw at you and be effective.
- 1:11:47Vince, that was a great call now.
- 1:11:49Wasn't that a super call?
- 1:11:50That was.
- 1:11:51I think Chuck Knowles had a call that one.
- 1:11:54That was just a fantastic call.
- 1:11:56Who figures he's going to draw play?
- 1:11:59Well, he had another timeout left.
- 1:12:00Well, I don't know why they got out of bounds to stop the clock, but still they've taken a timeout.
- 1:12:05A charge timeout. Why would they do that?
- 1:12:07No, the poor men have gone out of bounds, Vince.
- 1:12:09Well, they've only got about 17 seconds remaining on the clock,
- 1:12:12and they still have another timeout that belongs to them.
- 1:12:14One more timeout left.
- 1:12:16I mean, let's tell you, they score now.
- 1:12:18The culture's totally demoralized and have had it.
- 1:12:21We'd better have Tracy Dunovan and fans at half time.
- 1:12:24Well, there used to be a time when you could say you win some, you lose some, and some are rained out,
- 1:12:33but this is a different game.
- 1:12:34I've got an expression for that, but I can't say it on the air.
- 1:12:38That's some...
- 1:12:39It starts with that's a...
- 1:12:41Well, at the 22-yard line, the Steelers are in possession.
- 1:12:47Baltimore just has not been able to get going.
- 1:12:49They have not been able to defensively do the things that they hoped that they would be able to do,
- 1:12:53nor have they been able to really do the things offensively.
- 1:12:56The Steelers have just dominated the game.
- 1:12:57Bradshaw back to throw, sets up, looks for some help, fires out of the flat to Harris.
- 1:13:02Harris to the 15-yard line on his feet at the 10, and inside the 10 to the 8-yard line goes Franco Harris.
- 1:13:07Mumford made the finishing tackle, and the clock rolls down to seven seconds, and the Steelers stop it once again.
- 1:13:13Well, they'll at least kick a field goal if they don't want to go for it here now.
- 1:13:16They could actually get another pass off before they run out of time.
- 1:13:19Right, right, and then kick a field goal.
- 1:13:22They're coming in now with Jarella, so he doesn't throw it.
- 1:13:27Let's hope he kicks it around.
- 1:13:29Stumps his toe.
- 1:13:31Down to the seven-yard line, and it is a first and goal for the Steelers at that spot,
- 1:13:35and Jarella will try to add another point to run it up to 26.
- 1:13:39Vince, go down and put that jinx on him.
- 1:13:41Oh, man.
- 1:13:43I mean...
- 1:13:45Holder will be body-walled in the putter, and Jarella will kick it from about the 15,
- 1:13:50and that's a 25-yard field goal.
- 1:13:56And Memorial Stadium, jam-packed against the Steelers this afternoon,
- 1:13:59is a very, very quiet place as we approach half-time.
- 1:14:03They better start hollering in that end zone there, do something.
- 1:14:07I think there is odd and maybe shocked as the cold football team.
- 1:14:11The kick is in the air, on the way, looks OK. Is it all right?
- 1:14:14Yes, sir, it's fine.
- 1:14:16Jarella has kicked a 25-yard field goal to add three more, and now it's the Steelers,
- 1:14:2226, and the Baltimore Colts, seven.
- 1:14:26As we go to the final, four seconds of play here in the first half.
- 1:14:31And Memorial Stadium, a very quiet place, and well it might be.
- 1:14:35The Colts are, well, not necessarily shocked, but they certainly look as though
- 1:14:39they've been stunned, to say the least.
- 1:14:42They have mounted one drive that has enabled them to score,
- 1:14:45a very good catch on the part of Roger Carr.
- 1:14:47Other than that, the defensive unit of the Steelers have shut the Colts down cold,
- 1:14:51and the offensive unit of the Steelers have been able to do what they wanted.
- 1:14:54Hey, Vince, one shot, we've got seven seconds left. How much time we got left?
- 1:14:58Four.
- 1:15:00This guy kicks an onside kick, all right?
- 1:15:02Yeah.
- 1:15:03We touch him.
- 1:15:04No, he won't.
- 1:15:05Call a timeout, and Burnshore won't miss.
- 1:15:07Well, this is man's good. He practices on just hitting the ball. He's not going to be fancy.
- 1:15:11While he missed it again, Ron Lee knocks it down and falls on in the 36-yard line.
- 1:15:16And that'll be it for the half. That should wipe it out,
- 1:15:19unless somebody was able to call time to save as much of the clock as there is,
- 1:15:24which might be one second, and apparently they did.
- 1:15:27There's one second on the board, so the Colts will have a chance for one play from their own 36.
- 1:15:36All right, here's it goes in one fifth.
- 1:15:38Well, I'll tell you, we came in here figuring we had a good shot,
- 1:15:41and they are handling us twice as effectively as last year.
- 1:15:45Yeah, so far, Vince, you're right.
- 1:15:47Right.
- 1:15:48Well, that's, you know, their two halves through every football game,
- 1:15:50and sometimes even a little bit more.
- 1:15:52One of the points that, well, let's watch the final play of the first half.
- 1:15:56Jones is going to put it up, and I imagine maybe Carr might be the fellow,
- 1:15:59unless it's Chester who is put way out here to the left.
- 1:16:01Jones drops back, everybody deep, and Chester is, Jones just puts it up for grabs.
- 1:16:05Roger Carr takes a look at it, and he couldn't make the catch inside the 10-yard line of the Steelers.
- 1:16:10The first half is over.
- 1:16:11Glenn Edwards broke up the play.
- 1:16:12That was close.
- 1:16:13And that is the end of the first half with the Steelers leading 26 to 7.
- 1:16:18We'll have more in one minute.
- 1:16:20You've got a heck of an afternoon's work cut out for you.
- 1:16:23Chuck, and half-time they told me that Jarrell doesn't have a bad leg.
- 1:16:26There's another part of his anatomy that is hurting.
- 1:16:29The groin, yes.
- 1:16:30Yes.
- 1:16:31He's got a groin and groin right now, and it really is giving him some problems,
- 1:16:35and that's the reason Mansfield has been there kicking off.
- 1:16:37Jarrell will try the second half kickoff, however.
- 1:16:39Stevens is waiting inside the 10-yard line between the 10 and the 5.
- 1:16:43Jarrell hits it.
- 1:16:44He's got this pretty good.
- 1:16:45Howard Stevens takes the 10-job, bobbled the ball, recovers to the 20.
- 1:16:48Outside, 25, 30, up to the 35, and ducks straight ahead to about the 38-yard line.
- 1:16:54Howard Stevens returns to about the 38.
- 1:16:57Donnie Shell stops him, and the offensive unit of the Colts take the field,
- 1:17:01with the Steelers leading by a score of 26 to 7.
- 1:17:04Here comes the second half.
- 1:17:07That's a pretty good return.
- 1:17:08Nothing up the middle, and he didn't try to knock over anybody,
- 1:17:11and he got it outside, got 10 yards more than he might have figured.
- 1:17:15Now, the same offensive unit is on field for the Baltimore Colts.
- 1:17:18Down he is wide right, car wide left.
- 1:17:20Lydell Mitchell and Roosevelt leaks to the running backs.
- 1:17:22Jones looking to steal a defense, gives the Lydell to the right side.
- 1:17:26He knocks into a little bit of a hole and manages to punch out two quick yards
- 1:17:29to about the 40-yard line before he is taken down by Jack Hamm.
- 1:17:36He's about the ball just about at the 40-yard line.
- 1:17:38We're at a second down and eight Baltimore at that spot.
- 1:17:43Defensively, you've got LC Greenwood, Dwight White, Holmes, and Mean Joe Green.
- 1:17:49They have that front four.
- 1:17:50They've got Hamm and Lambert and Russell as linebackers on the corners.
- 1:17:56Hold on a minute as the Colts come into a split backfield, second and eight at the 40.
- 1:18:00Down he is wide right, car wide left.
- 1:18:02Jones wants to throw a deep drop back to his 30.
- 1:18:04Drills his pass incomplete.
- 1:18:06It's sailed away from Lydell Mitchell.
- 1:18:07It'll be third down and eight Baltimore at the 40-yard line.
- 1:18:12And that stealer defensive unit that we're talking about on the corners on the one corner,
- 1:18:16you've got JT Thomas on the other corner.
- 1:18:18You've got Mel Blonde and the safety men are Mike Wagner and Glenn Edwards.
- 1:18:22Jones was five for ten first half at two intercepted.
- 1:18:26Now he faces a certain passing situation, third and eight at the 40.
- 1:18:31And they drop Lambert out as a middle linebacker and they add a new defensive back,
- 1:18:35my name is Jimmy Allen.
- 1:18:36So they've got five defensive backs, not a third down at eight at the 40.
- 1:18:39Jones looks over the defensive alignment, yanks it away.
- 1:18:42No fake, wants to throw.
- 1:18:43Jones is lobbing it upfield and it's going to be overthrown and intended for Don McCauley.
- 1:18:47Covering McCauley was a very good linebacker named Jack Hamm.
- 1:18:51Now McCaul's first offensive thrust in the second half dies very quickly
- 1:18:55and the stealers force the punt.
- 1:18:57So you see the advantage, the ability of a linebacker to cover the back coming out of the back.
- 1:19:02McCauley runs good patterns, does a good job on third down.
- 1:19:05Hamm was with him all the way and burnt out over throwing.
- 1:19:08A putting situation and downfield Lynn Swan is going to return the punt.
- 1:19:13He's standing at about the stealer 30.
- 1:19:14Now he backpedals a little bit.
- 1:19:16David Lee will kick it from about the Baltimore cold 32.
- 1:19:19Stand wide looking over the defensive alignment of the stealers as their punt return team is on.
- 1:19:25They've got an eight-man rush, have the stealers.
- 1:19:27We wait for Forrest Blue's snap.
- 1:19:29A snap is good.
- 1:19:30Here comes the punt.
- 1:19:31He almost had it blocked.
- 1:19:32A good punt by David Lee.
- 1:19:33Swan takes it at the stealer 23.
- 1:19:35It goes outside to the far sideline up to the 30.
- 1:19:38It rolled out a bounce over on the far side of the field.
- 1:19:41It looks like it might have been Dan Dickel who ran him out at about the 30-yard line
- 1:19:45somewhere in that vicinity.
- 1:19:46The stealers go to work for the first time in the second half.
- 1:19:53The fellow who almost blocked the punt for the stealers was Jim Allen, a defensive back.
- 1:19:58David Lee still got it away.
- 1:19:59It's first down for the stealers.
- 1:20:01The ball resting at their own 30.
- 1:20:04And Bradshaw brings him out on the football.
- 1:20:06Lewis coming out wide to the right side.
- 1:20:08That means Swan is the other way.
- 1:20:09They've got Frenchie Fuqua and Franco Harris is running backs.
- 1:20:13Waiting for the takeaway by Bradshaw.
- 1:20:15Gives it to Franco Harris.
- 1:20:16He's off the right side.
- 1:20:17Bursts through up over the 35 to the 36-yard line.
- 1:20:20And I think Arthur Donovan, that may set the trend of things for the stealers in the second half.
- 1:20:24Actually, what that was, Chuck, that was just a delayed buck.
- 1:20:27And Harris takes it to his left and comes back, gets the hand off, and goes right up to his right.
- 1:20:32They're just blocking in there.
- 1:20:33They got the hole, opens up, and he's just running up there.
- 1:20:37Well, they got about a second down and maybe three, a little bit longer than three for the stealers,
- 1:20:41near the stealer 37.
- 1:20:43This time, Stallworth is wide left.
- 1:20:45Wide right is Lynn Swan.
- 1:20:46Split in the backfield.
- 1:20:47Nobody behind the quarterback, Bradshaw.
- 1:20:49Waiting for the snap to the quarterback.
- 1:20:51Pitches it out to Franco Harris.
- 1:20:52Sweeps the right side and gets, got through two tacklers.
- 1:20:55And then it's going to be rolled down around the stealer 43- or four-yard line.
- 1:20:59John Dutton finally caught up to him.
- 1:21:01Yeah, I'll tell you about Mr. Harris.
- 1:21:02You don't give him any moves to make him fall down.
- 1:21:05You better pop him.
- 1:21:06Bruce Ladis, the guy that really misses him first.
- 1:21:08He comes up.
- 1:21:09He's in good, and now he gets blocked.
- 1:21:10There's a miss by Mumford.
- 1:21:13Oh, Mumford on Harris.
- 1:21:15I mean, that's like me trying to knock you down, Donovan.
- 1:21:17I think you could do it, Ben.
- 1:21:19Oh, give me blinds-eye and a plank.
- 1:21:24It is the first down, Steelers, of the stealer 43.
- 1:21:28Again, they split the backfield.
- 1:21:29Do the Steelers with Fuqua and Harris.
- 1:21:31The turn, the gift of Fuqua.
- 1:21:32Sweep on the left side.
- 1:21:33He gets a block.
- 1:21:34Piles over the 45- to the 47-yard line.
- 1:21:36Maybe beyond that before he is finally hit and taken down by Jim Chayonsky, who has made his fair share of tackles this afternoon.
- 1:21:42There, spotting the football at the stealer 46-yard line.
- 1:21:45Again, it's some three-second down and seven.
- 1:21:49The Steelers lead it by a score of 26 to 7.
- 1:21:52They have just blown the Colts right out of the ballpark in the first half.
- 1:21:57And this time, they send Stallworth and Lynn Swann wide to the right side of the set.
- 1:22:02Swann is split and a slot to the right is Stallworth.
- 1:22:06Second down, seven.
- 1:22:07Back to throw, Bradshaw sets up, fires his pass.
- 1:22:09Caught and taken down at the Baltimore 45-yard line is Stallworth.
- 1:22:13Mumford made the tackle.
- 1:22:16And it is a first down for the Steelers at the Baltimore 45.
- 1:22:19He threw it in, Vince, among a lot of people there.
- 1:22:27First down, Steelers.
- 1:22:28The drive started for them on their own 31-yard line is now the Baltimore Colts 45-yard line.
- 1:22:36Against Swann, wide to the right side.
- 1:22:38This time, Frank Lewis is wide to the left.
- 1:22:40Again, it's Fuqua and Frank O'Harris, his running backs.
- 1:22:43Waiting for the takeaway.
- 1:22:44Here's a fake handoff by Bradshaw.
- 1:22:46Rolls to set up, firing the bomb.
- 1:22:47He just puts it up for grabs.
- 1:22:48Lewis is running to it.
- 1:22:50And he can't get to the football.
- 1:22:52And Ray Oldham is complaining of offensive pass interference.
- 1:22:55We got a flag here now.
- 1:22:58Just back in the area where he threw the ball.
- 1:22:59And did they hit him?
- 1:23:00I don't think they hit him.
- 1:23:01Well, they say interference, illegal use of the hands against the Steelers.
- 1:23:06That's a preliminary sign.
- 1:23:09Maybe you got one too many head taps in there.
- 1:23:12I think we got, at least we got one thing going for us in the penalties.
- 1:23:16But not much else.
- 1:23:20Now, taking a look at the penalties, the Steelers were penalized four times in the first half.
- 1:23:24They called three times.
- 1:23:26And here's a big walk off.
- 1:23:27Listen to referee Pat Haggerty.
- 1:23:29Illegal use of the hands, number 15, pumping.
- 1:23:33Illegal use of the hands, takes the ball from the cold 45 back to the Steeler 45.
- 1:23:39They got Jim Clack again.
- 1:23:41Yes, they did.
- 1:23:45They say, Vince, if you miss a guy, you still try to grab him and take a chance of getting called.
- 1:23:50Swan, wide right, Stallworth wide left, split in the backfield on a first down and 20.
- 1:23:54Back to throw goes Bradshaw, kind of a shallow drop, lobs it upfield to Franco Harris.
- 1:23:58Harris is hit by two of the Colts and taken down at the 49-yard line.
- 1:24:05At the 49-yard line, Bruce Laird was there to help in the tackle, along with Darrell Luce.
- 1:24:12So a gain of four makes it second down and 16 now for the Steelers.
- 1:24:18They've got to go to the Baltimore Colts, 35 for a first down.
- 1:24:23He'll have to come right back with his draw play again, Chuck.
- 1:24:26I'd be watching for him as Jarunski.
- 1:24:28Well, we've got a slot right in Lewis and a split to the right in Lynn Swan and a flank left on the part of the Stallworth.
- 1:24:34Back to throw on the draw comes Harris and Mike Barnes stood him up.
- 1:24:37Dutton misses him and then got him a second time and held him at the 46-yard line.
- 1:24:42Dutton got to try to take him up around the head and got rolled off him.
- 1:24:45And Dutton went down and grabbed him low and made the tackle.
- 1:24:48And Franco Harris, I'm sorry to say, is slow getting up.
- 1:24:53Franco was shaking a little bit on the previous play, Chuck.
- 1:24:56He limped back to the huddle just slightly.
- 1:24:58The draw and Dutton hit him head up.
- 1:25:01He bounced and he grabbed him again and Franco is conscious, but he is being a, I think, these aromatic spirits of ammonia,
- 1:25:12whatever they have in those little cartridges, is being applied to get him clearheaded again.
- 1:25:16A little shot of, a little bit of eggnog or something to wake you up real quick.
- 1:25:21Help to the sideline. He is out of the ballgame. I hope we'll see him again.
- 1:25:25Reggie Harrison takes his place as a running back. So it's Harrison and Fuqua.
- 1:25:29The Steelers now show the Colts a double wing. The Colts almost jump off and get back.
- 1:25:32Bradshaw back to throw third.
- 1:25:34Pressure coming. Bradshaw runs now throws in complete upfield.
- 1:25:38And it is going to be fourth down and 19 and the Colts have stopped the Steelers for the first time today.
- 1:25:46It's for the fumble. It's the first time they've stopped them.
- 1:25:49That's right.
- 1:25:51Well, it is the first time they've put any pressure on Bradshaw, too.
- 1:25:56It's close to showing you they're only human also.
- 1:26:01All ready to go. We'll have a punt. Walden is on field to do the putting for the Steelers.
- 1:26:05Down around the 10 yard line waiting is Howard Stevens.
- 1:26:09Baltimore with a 10 man rush. The only man downtown is Stevens.
- 1:26:13The snap. Here comes the pressure. He got it away. End over end.
- 1:26:16Stevens takes it to Baltimore 20 straight ahead 25, 30 and Trappman pulled off his pins at about the 32 yard line.
- 1:26:22Linebacker toes got there. And Mike Webster also in on the tackle.
- 1:26:27Baltimore takes over. The WBOC and Salisbury Maryland and all of our network stations
- 1:26:31are down for station identification. This is the Metro Media Baltimore Colts football network.
- 1:26:37This is Tom Davis. Join me mornings and afternoons for complete sports on WCBM Metro Media Baltimore.
- 1:26:43WCBM Colts Radio.
- 1:26:48A split backfield behind Jones. First down of the Baltimore 31.
- 1:26:54Take away by Byrd. No fake. Wants to throw. Sets up. Takes his time. Throws down the gut.
- 1:26:58Chester's got it. At the Steeler 45.
- 1:27:02Right down the middle of the Raymond Chester. First down Baltimore inside the Steeler 45.
- 1:27:07That's good pass detection here. He had time to throw the ball.
- 1:27:11And they figure you know behind as much as it costs are they got to be going deep.
- 1:27:15They got to open up. Double covering those wide guys and Raymond is open in the middle.
- 1:27:20They got to get one now. Proud is with them. Listen.
- 1:27:25The big wheels got him going up there in the upper deck. All with the spoke.
- 1:27:29Car wide to the left. Downy wide to the right. Split on the backfield. Nobody behind Jones.
- 1:27:34First down Steeler 45. Red down and set. Waiting now for the takeaway. Jones may be autobilizing.
- 1:27:39A long count. Turns and gets it to Lydell. Lydell skirts through the middle.
- 1:27:43Finds a hole and fights inside the 40 to the Steeler 37 yard line.
- 1:27:47And Jack Ham stood him up there and Lydell Mitchell found daylight where there didn't appear to be any daylight.
- 1:27:52And Randall the Steeler 37.
- 1:27:56Second down and to Jack Ham and Lydell used to be teammates for Joe Paterno.
- 1:28:02But after the half. They're coming to life a little bit.
- 1:28:06The crowd's coming to life. So this helps. Come on.
- 1:28:10Franco Harris out with bruised ribs. Cars wide left. Wide right.
- 1:28:13Downy a standard throw set backfield. Lydell and Roosevelt shoulder to shoulder.
- 1:28:17Second and two with the Steeler 37. Penalty flag down. The ball goes to Leakes. He went straight ahead for first down yardage.
- 1:28:23It's nullified on an illegal motion penalty against the Colts. Leakes was two inches to get the ball.
- 1:28:28So instead of second and two, it'll be second and seven.
- 1:28:32The ball will be moved back to the 42.
- 1:28:40That really does hurt. A very uncomfortable mistake.
- 1:28:44I haven't seen many games played without it.
- 1:28:47You know, even last week when we were beating the Puppets.
- 1:28:52He got balls about three or four different times. And that really is concentration.
- 1:28:59Leakes is out of the ball. Game Don McCauley goes in at second down seven at the Steelers 42.
- 1:29:07McCauley and Lydell with the setbacks. Downy wide right. Car wide left. Chester on the right end of the line.
- 1:29:12Take away by Jones. A shallow drop. A quick pass to Lydell. Lydell is hit by one of those real good Steeler linebackers by the name of Jack Lambert.
- 1:29:19And took him down at the 41 yard line.
- 1:29:25So the pass to Lydell picked up a yard and it's third down and six.
- 1:29:29I'll tell you, as I said before and as I had to advertise, the Steelers got their defensive linebackers. They really do move around.
- 1:29:36Oh man, you just can't run with them. I mean, the backs coming out of the backfield are really nullified. Neutralized.
- 1:29:42They are really excellent, particularly Lambert. He is one of the. He's just one of the easy.
- 1:29:46He's in the mold of the old guys like Dick Bunkus and Joe Schmidt. He's bigger, stronger and faster.
- 1:29:52All right. A takeaway by Jones. Third and six. Back to throw. Has a little time.
- 1:29:56Takes now runs into pressure and is going to be pulled down in his own backfield. Fighting for yardage. He's down at the 45.
- 1:30:03We got a flag and a penalty flag has been dropped.
- 1:30:10Jones was thrown in the cold 47 yard line. They spot the ball at the 45.
- 1:30:14Now bring it to the 47 and the penalty flag has been dropped.
- 1:30:17When the field judge came up to holding against the Steelers preliminary.
- 1:30:21Field judges come up to make the call, report to the officials. So this will be a first down, I think, for the Colts.
- 1:30:28Well, we got the brakes going our way now.
- 1:30:33They take it to the 41 and now they will walk it off from there.
- 1:30:38It'll go down to about the 31 of the Steelers. They bring the ball down to the 36 yard line and it'll be first down.
- 1:30:47Defense and holding, number 35, run by Prisant.
- 1:30:51First down on a holding penalty.
- 1:30:56Cold ball, first down, Steelers 36.
- 1:30:59Let's see if Jones doesn't fly it back off of play action and try to hit Roger Card deep. It's about time.
- 1:31:06Well, Carr has caught one for 17 yards in a TD so far today. Wide left, Dowdy the other way.
- 1:31:11High formation, leaks the front man. Takes the hand up, rolls back deep to throw.
- 1:31:15Fires over the middle to Lydell Mitchell at the Steelers 30 and fumbled and the Steelers anti-Russell recovers with the 29.
- 1:31:23Lydell fumbled when taken down by one of the linebackers and the other one Russell recovered.
- 1:31:29Jack Hamm made the tackle.
- 1:31:32I have to almost say you can't run without the right.
- 1:31:37This is a good play.
- 1:31:38Now, wait a minute. They may have ruled the ball was whistled dead prior to the fumble. They do.
- 1:31:44Oh boy.
- 1:31:47Oh!
- 1:31:50I tell you, as a rooter for the Colts, that's hard to believe.
- 1:31:55Well, it is a judgment call on the part of the official and my golly, you can't, you know, I agree with what you've said, Vince, but that's the way he looked at it.
- 1:32:03So that's the way it's going to be.
- 1:32:05But boy, oh boy.
- 1:32:07I'll tell you, that's one of the weird ones.
- 1:32:09You take them anyway you can get them.
- 1:32:11At the 29 yard line, second down now.
- 1:32:15And about the four, high formation, the turn, the gift to Lydell off the right side as there's nothing there and he's taken down at the 28 yard line.
- 1:32:27Joe Green down on the bottom of the pile.
- 1:32:29Donnie, see if Green doesn't line up offside. They're so very, very close to him.
- 1:32:33I mean, he does. Well, he does, Vince. They put him inside between the guard and the center and they try to, you know, like foul up the block and the offensive block.
- 1:32:41Sometimes it looks real good and other times, you know, he gets manhandled.
- 1:32:48Well, it'll be a third down and about two for the Colts of all resting near the Steeler 28 yard line as they come to a standard pro set.
- 1:32:54McCauley, Roosevelt leaks the running backs behind Jones, Kennedy and Chester, the tight end.
- 1:32:59Waiting for the snap to Jones. He gets it to Leakes. Leakes through the middle.
- 1:33:02He's got the first down and then some to the Steeler 22 yard line.
- 1:33:07Mike Wigter made the tackle.
- 1:33:13And the Colts have a first down.
- 1:33:15This is a running their linebacker actually over the defensive right end actually overruns the plate.
- 1:33:20I had a game on and he ran right by Roosevelt Leakes at the Steeler 22.
- 1:33:25First down Baltimore times six oh four remaining third quarter Steelers leading by a count of 26 to seven.
- 1:33:33Split in the backfield. Nobody behind Jones. Quarterback takes it away without a fake.
- 1:33:37A deep drop sets up the throw fires toward the end zone. Roger Carr can't get to it.
- 1:33:41It's over his head and we'll go to a second down and 10 Baltimore at the Steeler 22.
- 1:33:48The high pass not brought on by the rush, especially still defensive backs.
- 1:33:54Super coverage at two people playing card and they were with him as the ball went over his overthrow.
- 1:33:59I tell you that last play there that pass rush since there was a lot of holding and grabbing and carrying on going on in there.
- 1:34:06I'm surprised the flag wasn't thrown in that one.
- 1:34:10Well they dropped the number 63 Ernie Holmes out of the defensive front four and add a defensive back shell.
- 1:34:17So they now come up with a down three to the Steelers on a second down 10 Baltimore at the Pittsburgh 22.
- 1:34:23Split in the backfield. Nobody behind Jones.
- 1:34:26He's not able to take away Jones. He answers away wants to throw.
- 1:34:29Gets pressure tries to run out of it and is taken down at the Steeler 33.
- 1:34:32It was Andy Russell, blitzing linebacker who got to him along with a defensive replacement Donnie Shell, a safety man.
- 1:34:41And the loss is back.
- 1:34:42And the 59 Jack Hamm, he also caused that. He jumped up.
- 1:34:44You watch Hamm coming in from the left side to see.
- 1:34:47And now Jones can't see where to go. He almost loses the ball.
- 1:34:51And that tried old expression you've heard a zillion times now you know how Custer must have felt.
- 1:34:56Well they were all over Jones back there.
- 1:34:58Where did they all come from?
- 1:34:59That's exactly right.
- 1:35:00Three down business has bothered them all year long.
- 1:35:05And you know who's blitzing.
- 1:35:07Third down and 20 from the Steeler 32.
- 1:35:10And the Colts hard pressed to do anything against this brilliant defensive unit of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 1:35:15Could be a blitz again.
- 1:35:17Take away by Jones. Back to throw. Here they come again.
- 1:35:19Jones steps up. Hold on. They got him again.
- 1:35:22Russell's got Jones down at the 40 yard line.
- 1:35:25And look at the coverage downfield.
- 1:35:27Nobody was nearly open.
- 1:35:30Vincent again. Oh Jones he nearly lost that ball.
- 1:35:32He just didn't pop out of his arm for a minute.
- 1:35:35And he's cooking up to pull it back in again.
- 1:35:38Fourth down and 28 now for Baltimore.
- 1:35:41And David Lee is on the punt with 518 remaining on the Steelers.
- 1:35:45Just bringing it to the Colts. They just never let up.
- 1:35:48Keep coming. Keep coming.
- 1:35:50Physically a very strong football team.
- 1:35:52And a very well coached and a team that executes.
- 1:35:55Makes very few mistakes.
- 1:35:59Punting formation and David Lee is on waiting downfield.
- 1:36:05It's going to be Theo Bell once again for Pittsburgh.
- 1:36:08And we'll have David Lee waiting for the snap from Forest Blue.
- 1:36:12All ready to go. There's the snap. It's perfect.
- 1:36:14Here comes some pressure.
- 1:36:15And David Lee angles it to the penalty.
- 1:36:18Five goes down. David Lee was hit.
- 1:36:20They ran into the kicker as Bell is snowed under with tacklers.
- 1:36:23At about the 14 yard line they ran into David Lee at midfield.
- 1:36:27I'll tell you what. Pittsburgh's doing everything to lose the game now.
- 1:36:34There's another big break. They're not arguing.
- 1:36:36This is unbelievable.
- 1:36:37They didn't run over him. They just kind of rolled into him.
- 1:36:40David Lee did a pretty good job then.
- 1:36:42Larry Brown is the guy who ran into the putter.
- 1:36:46So the Colts maintain possession. It'll be first down Baltimore.
- 1:36:53At the 35 of the Steelers.
- 1:36:56What do you think Chuck Knowles thinking about right now?
- 1:37:01He looks very calm. You look at him on the sideline.
- 1:37:04He hasn't taken his hands out of his pockets.
- 1:37:06Wide left car. Wide right dowdy.
- 1:37:09Lidell and Roosevelt are the backs behind quarterback Jones.
- 1:37:12Waiting for the takeaway. Jones has got a straight drop.
- 1:37:15Deep drop. Wants to throw. Runs out of pressure.
- 1:37:17Jones is going to be down at the 35 yard line of the Steelers.
- 1:37:20He dove down and was Ernie Holmes falling on top of him.
- 1:37:24So Jones got it back to the line of scrimmage.
- 1:37:26They don't stop blocking somebody. He's going to be punched from the game's over.
- 1:37:30They're running every day. Not running anybody out of the backfield.
- 1:37:32They have to keep them in the block.
- 1:37:34And the deep people are covered.
- 1:37:36I don't know what he's going to do unless somebody fakes this set up and then feels out of the backfield.
- 1:37:42He was trying to go really to Chester again. Chester was the way down there.
- 1:37:45But Chester was also covered.
- 1:37:47Yeah, but if nobody comes out of the backfield for the linebacker to pick up they can go chase Chester.
- 1:37:52So he's not that open.
- 1:37:54You've got to have variety.
- 1:37:56We've got another passing situation.
- 1:37:58Baltimore now with a second and 10 of the Steelers. 35.
- 1:38:01Waiting for Jones to take away.
- 1:38:03The Steelers may have jumped off. A penalty flag is thrown and a flare pass to Roosevelt Leakes is poorly thrown.
- 1:38:08And we'll see whether the penalty flag is offside against Pittsburgh.
- 1:38:12Or whether they were drawn off. We'll know in a moment.
- 1:38:15Pittsburgh's right defense of him.
- 1:38:17Yeah.
- 1:38:19Oh.
- 1:38:21He was drawn off really.
- 1:38:24Well we'll know in a moment. It looks as though it might go against Baltimore.
- 1:38:28Meaning illegal motion. And he was drawn offside.
- 1:38:30A false start I believe is what they call it.
- 1:38:34Here it is.
- 1:38:37Illegal motion.
- 1:38:39Up and decline.
- 1:38:41Third and 10. Illegal motion decline.
- 1:38:44Third down 10. Baltimore with a stealer. 35.
- 1:38:48Now as we sit here this afternoon and watch the Colts and the Steelers.
- 1:38:51Vince you've got a bit of an idea how the Steelers were able to hang up the record they've hung up coming into this afternoon's ball game.
- 1:38:57Defensively they're just plain overpowering. That's all.
- 1:39:01They'll go to Chester now Chuck.
- 1:39:03Okay third down 10. Chester is split off the right end of the line. Jones takes it away. A deep drop sets up.
- 1:39:09Runs out of trouble. Now still running looking and Joe Green chases him.
- 1:39:12Green dies misses him. And going out of bounds is Jones at about the 31 yard line of the Steelers.
- 1:39:18A very very frustrating afternoon for young Burt Jones.
- 1:39:22He just has not had the chance to do anything at all. Jack Hamm ran him out of bounds.
- 1:39:26Every time he looks up there are three or four white shirted Steelers all over him.
- 1:39:31And the coverage downfield of the deep backfield of the Steelers has been almost flawless.
- 1:39:36He's going to go for the fourth down for the first down. Why not?
- 1:39:39That's right. Are you kidding? 350 left in the third quarter.
- 1:39:42They had the ball it's like a scrimmage. Put the ball in the 35 yard line and let the team run with it.
- 1:39:46They've had many chances to get closer but they haven't gotten there.
- 1:39:51That looks like the longest run for the line of scrimmage.
- 1:39:54It's from the 32 yard line.
- 1:39:58We've got about seven to go. Fourth and seven. Jones fakes the handoff from McCauley.
- 1:40:02McCauley throws a good block to help him. Going for broke. Roger Carr can't get there.
- 1:40:06He had double coverage. Brown was with him and Edwards was with him.
- 1:40:10So the Colts give it all over to the Steelers.
- 1:40:13At the Steelers 32. Time out of Baltimore with a score of the Steelers 26 and the Colts 7.
- 1:40:20What a number this sandwich is. How is yours?
- 1:40:24I'm thinking.
- 1:40:25You're too busy to see a cute little number over there.
- 1:40:28I'm too busy with numbers to be interested in numbers.
- 1:40:30Too interested in numbers to be interested in numbers.
- 1:40:32Look, I'm trying to figure out what number to play in the numbers game.
- 1:40:36You wouldn't understand but you take today's temperature, add the weight of a cougar and multiply by Einstein's factor.
- 1:40:42Well that's only just picking any three digit number, a date, a street number.
- 1:40:45That's all you got to do to play today to cash tonight.
- 1:40:47What about Einstein?
- 1:40:49Why didn't he win the Lowry's numbers game?
- 1:40:51Music

- 1:41:13This season or any season.
- 1:41:15Household finance and equal opportunity lender.
- 1:41:19Music
- 1:41:25Well the Steelers take the football again with 3.44 remaining in the third quarter.
- 1:41:29The Steelers just scored every time they handled the football with the exception of one time in the first half.
- 1:41:36And for the first time this afternoon the Colts stopped them the last time they handled the football.
- 1:41:40They had a series of three downs and worked the ball around the three sequences and worked the ball from their own 31.
- 1:41:45And then the Colts stopped them with the Steeler 46.
- 1:41:48And they were forced to kick the ball away.
- 1:41:51Now the Steelers with Bradshaw go to work again.
- 1:41:54Harrison is in the ball game.
- 1:41:56Franco Harris with bruised ribs is setting it out.
- 1:41:58Waiting for the takeaway by Bradshaw.
- 1:42:00Rolls back wants to throw.
- 1:42:01Looks.
- 1:42:02Fires to the back out of the backfield.
- 1:42:03Harris.
- 1:42:04Harris to the 40, 45.
- 1:42:06And up to midfield goes Harris.
- 1:42:07He runs first and then Franco Harris.
- 1:42:09Reggie Harrison a pretty good back from Cincinnati.
- 1:42:12A three year veteran.
- 1:42:14And he picks up first down at the Steeler 49 yard line.
- 1:42:17Vince I have to say that I have to say really that this guy Bradshaw I didn't think he was that good a quarterback.
- 1:42:22But he's picking him apart like a surgeon now.
- 1:42:24He really is and it is a difference.
- 1:42:26They're linebackers against the ability to cover the backs coming out of the backfield and we haven't been able to do that.
- 1:42:34All ready to go with the first down at the 49 yard line.
- 1:42:37Bradshaw turns gives to Harrison.
- 1:42:39Harrison off the right side and runs through a couple of arm tackles and is finally pulled down to the Baltimore Colt 43 yard line.
- 1:42:46This is what you're called controlling the game now.
- 1:42:49Now they have to worry.
- 1:42:50They're worried about the pass and now they open them up a little bit.
- 1:42:53And these guys this offensive line of the Steelers they show you a lot today.
- 1:42:58I don't know how good they've been all year but that'd be pretty good to win nine or a low though.
- 1:43:02Second down and two at the Baltimore Colt 42 yard line.
- 1:43:06And again it's Harrison and a few setbacks behind Bradshaw to give to Harrison into the middle he goes.
- 1:43:11Chayonsky stands him up at about the 40 yard line.
- 1:43:14But it's first down for the Steelers.
- 1:43:20Harrison has replaced Franco Harris.
- 1:43:23Harris is out with bruised ribs and Harrison has picked up a first down at Baltimore's 40 yard line.
- 1:43:29This makes it all the tougher now when they're running game going for the sides of throw the ball.
- 1:43:34They got to look for the run first and it really does slow down on your pass.
- 1:43:38Frankly Arthur as we watch as they develop this afternoon it looks as though the Steelers honestly can do whatever they want to almost anytime they want to.
- 1:43:46Bradshaw play action fake he's back to throw sets up fires.
- 1:43:49Lins one with a great catch with a 27 yard line at the Baltimore Colts.
- 1:43:59He is hurt but he held out on the football.
- 1:44:01Mumford helped to put him down.
- 1:44:02Ron gets up and says I'm all right.
- 1:44:06You don't catch the ball any better than that Chuck.
- 1:44:09That's just a great catch.
- 1:44:10It's a great pass.
- 1:44:11It has to be.
- 1:44:12Put right in there.
- 1:44:14Who's the guy number 46 is the guy that made the tackles softer.
- 1:44:17It looks like he's trying to get out of the way.
- 1:44:20He has hands like the let the cough.
- 1:44:22He really 27 and doesn't that fellow have a pair of hands.
- 1:44:25Oh my goodness.
- 1:44:27Steelers on a drive once again first down to the Baltimore 27 Bradshaw has them down and set the takeaway.
- 1:44:33He gives it to Harrison Harrison off the left side shots one tackler and falls inside the 25 to about the 23 yard line.
- 1:44:39Hanging on was Jim Chayefsky who refused to be shaken off.
- 1:44:42Salter came up to help him out the ball is rested at 24 a gain of three second and seven.
- 1:44:47That was the best shot by our linebackers all day.
- 1:44:49A stand like not 33 over the runner.
- 1:44:53Good thought Larry Brown goes out of the ballgame as a tight end.
- 1:44:56Stallworth comes in so they're playing a Lewis is a slot right.
- 1:45:00Lynn Swan outside him to the right and Star Wars splits off on the left side.
- 1:45:03They split the backfield.
- 1:45:04Nobody behind Bradshaw on a second down at seven at the cold 24 Bradshaw hands it to Harrison into the middle.
- 1:45:10He goes and he is down to the 20 yard line and the Colts were able to stand him up down there with fellows like Airman and Dutton.
- 1:45:16But they're doing it just to eat the time up now.
- 1:45:19Exactly right.
- 1:45:20We've got to get the ball back if we're going to do anything at all.
- 1:45:26Well the about the only thing the Colts have been able to do so far this afternoon against the Steelers do something no other team did all year score a touchdown against them in the first quarter when it was a ballgame nine to seven.
- 1:45:37That's right.
- 1:45:38And now the time is running out for the third period and there are going to play off so we shut him out in the third period.
- 1:45:46Well that's the end of the third quarter with our score.
- 1:45:49The Pittsburgh Steelers 26 the Baltimore Colts seven.
- 1:45:59Well the fourth quarter about to get underway at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore and it would appear that the better part of this football game.
- 1:46:07The first half of the first quarter clearly belonged to the Steelers the second half of the first quarter belonged to the Colts and everything else has belonged to Pittsburgh as they now have the ball at the Baltimore 20 yard line third down and three as we go to the final quarter this afternoon.
- 1:46:20Even Stan Stan White just come from talking with the Russia broader beginning of fourth quarter and I bet you might say why so what do you what do you think Ted.
- 1:46:29Stop. Well the Steelers have put on an awesome demonstration this afternoon slot right Lewis flank wide right is a stall where the other way rather Lin Swan and the other way it's all worth to the left takeaway the gift goes to a Harrison off the left side it's daylight to the 15
- 1:46:45guys between people of the 10 yard line goes Harrison who is the replacement for Franco Harris first down for the Steelers around the Baltimore Colts 11 yard line. That's right you know they might be a little demoralized to the offense not even able to take advantage of many opportunities from around the 35 yard line and now the defense figures what the heck they can't score what are we supposed to do.
- 1:47:09Maybe maybe we'll get lucky and Pittsburgh will quick kick.
- 1:47:13Well the Steelers on the football from the same offensive sets one split wide right a slot inside him as Lewis the other way this time.
- 1:47:21It looks like Theo Bell hold on a minute it is and now the takeaway by Bradshaw lobster into the corner of the end zone and complete intended for Swan and Mumford with him every step of the way was just had better protection that time and was able to break up the play.
- 1:47:33It was not Theo Bell on that far side it was Ernie Pugh.
- 1:47:38It is second down and 10 for the Steelers at the cold 11 yard line. Just a lob just to put it in the corner. He was throwing to a target and hoping that Swan could get to the ball before the defender Mumford.
- 1:47:49It didn't work that time that daughter dugout was open strong would have been in the dressing room and probably could have caught it in the runway.
- 1:47:56The way he goes same offensive set Starworth this time wide left slot right as a Lewis hold on a minute they have a shift and now the takeaway by Bradshaw he's back to throw a little bit of pressure throws down the gut touchdown Pittsburgh Lynn's law is there.
- 1:48:11We had a safety boots on and he threw it right where the safety man left.
- 1:48:17Just a great play and it left it up the month for to cover that spot and Lloyd couldn't get over it was a delayed safety blitz.
- 1:48:29We have 1410 remaining the Steelers are just putting the icing on the cake.
- 1:48:34They have been able to do it in every department of football this afternoon with a possible exception of kicking off.
- 1:48:40I got a good idea to let the clock just continually one run one.
- 1:48:47Now waiting for the point after touchdown effort by Jarrella.
- 1:48:50It's in the air. It looks all right. No penalty flags and Jarrella really uncomfortable gimping and limping off to the sideline.
- 1:48:57You can tell that that groin injury is bothering him as the Steelers now lead at 33 to seven and they're just doing a thing on the Baltimore Colts.
- 1:49:04They have completely dominated they have outplayed them in all departments.
- 1:49:09Now the Colts had a great year. They played some very good football the first half of the year.
- 1:49:14It appeared that they did not play as well as they might have played in the second half of the season.
- 1:49:18And that downward swing has continued this afternoon at the expense of the Steelers.
- 1:49:22And I have a feeling the Steelers are going to make a lot of football teams look bad before they finish this season.
- 1:49:2760,000 20 this afternoon the attendance that is a capacity turnout.
- 1:49:32This is been our best offensive weapon so far.
- 1:49:35And I think that the play Chuck has been a short kickoff other than that we're not even in the ballgame.
- 1:49:40Now that's just how good the Steelers have been.
- 1:49:43And you know what I don't think they've had a put one time have they.
- 1:49:46Yeah they've funded one to one time. Well that's part of it.
- 1:49:49Yes I must have been out having a short one.
- 1:49:53If they go on to open as it looks as though they will.
- 1:49:56What a battle it should be because Oakland has come up short so many times and it looks as though they had it.
- 1:50:02It's a immaculate reception they call it a few years ago.
- 1:50:05Frank O'Hara's got the rebound and beat him in the last second after Oakland looked like they had it.
- 1:50:09And now they're playing in Oakland's park.
- 1:50:11Well if Pittsburgh is to go there that'll be worth watching.
- 1:50:15All ready to go.
- 1:50:17Bobby Walden will kick off now for the Steelers.
- 1:50:20He's their putter on the ball and he hit it pretty good right down the throat.
- 1:50:23Howard Stevens the 15 now the 20 to the 30.
- 1:50:27Jicks outside to the 30 on his feet has spilled forward to about the 35 yard line.
- 1:50:32Colts go to work first and ten at their own 35.
- 1:50:34The tackle credit to Benny Cunningham a rookie from Clemson.
- 1:50:37You talk about a wide a tight end with size.
- 1:50:40There's a guy that's six four two hundred and fifty five pounds.
- 1:50:45What's his number Chuck? He's eighty nine. I didn't even see him. Oh yeah I see him now.
- 1:50:50He's a rookie. He's a guy with the yellow pants on. That's one of them.
- 1:50:55Well Jones and his teammates are just completely frustrated with the defensive efforts of the Steelers all day.
- 1:51:00The Steelers have been just as good as everybody said they would be this afternoon.
- 1:51:04The takeaway by Jones rolls a little bit left sets up throws down the middle caught by Lydell Mitchell at the forty two three yard line of the Colts and taken down there by middle linebacker Jack Lambert.
- 1:51:13This guy Lambert he's all over the place.
- 1:51:15He is not only all over the place but he hits like a ton. I'll tell you he does.
- 1:51:20How big is he? He's six four and two twenty and I notice he doesn't help people up the way some of them do after he knocks them down.
- 1:51:27He doesn't like anybody until the game's over. Well that helps the people up if you knock them down is for the birds anyhow.
- 1:51:32A lot of guys do it huh? Did he? Sure it takes your energy away. That's right.
- 1:51:38Second down and two at the Colts forty three and Jones is going to have to just fill the air with footballs hands off the Lydell Mitchell cuts into the middle he's stuck up at the forty five.
- 1:51:47He may have the first down it looks as though he's just across the forty five and if he is that'll be a first down.
- 1:51:53Bernthold was a judge on the sideline says he's got a first down.
- 1:51:58That's the story. Didn't he play with Gino Barrow-Tolerant College? He played with Gino, Matson, Joe Scudera and a lot of those guys out there.
- 1:52:07They didn't have to go to school all they had to do was show up for practice.
- 1:52:10I remember a remark that Arthur Donovan made one day as the bus went by that University of San Francisco is there's the spot with a retired Mark Heddy's grades.
- 1:52:19The pass is thrown off the hands of Raymond Chester at the Steeler forty five yard line.
- 1:52:24Second down coming from Baltimore at their own forty five.
- 1:52:29Well I know what a bitter disappointment this football game has been to so many Baltimore Colts football fans.
- 1:52:35And you know you look at the cold effort this afternoon and I think if you talk to the players as Vince will on the postgame show today a lot of them are going to say that they just didn't play very well.
- 1:52:44But I have found down through the years Vince that a good team a team as good as the Steelers are going to make you look a lot worse than you really are.
- 1:52:50That would be the understatement of the year. Chuck they really are.
- 1:52:54You know the Steelers are just look as though they can do anything they want almost any time they want to.
- 1:52:58They're coming on like gangbusters.
- 1:53:00All ready to go with a second and ten Jones Yanks it away wants to throw sets up the fighters receiver a lot of time fires down the middle.
- 1:53:06Now he has at the 30 of the Steelers and is going to be taken down inside the 30 yard line.
- 1:53:16Mel Glantz made the stopping tackle and Dowdy gets out of that mess of tacklers and comes up all right first down at the Steelers twenty nine.
- 1:53:27Twenty six yards the biggest play of the day.
- 1:53:31One of them once again for those in the stadium who are tuned in on transistor radio.
- 1:53:40The bad behavior that a few fans who will occasionally show on the stadium will not be tolerated at all in any manner shape or form.
- 1:53:47Throw caught by car at the 11 yard line of the Steelers back there was a linebacker Russell helping cloud and car made the catch at the 11 yard line for another first.
- 1:53:57That was a great catch because he almost lost the handle on that one Chuck.
- 1:54:01They come back in with the ball.
- 1:54:05Thirty three to seven the Steelers Colts first down at the dealer 11 yard line.
- 1:54:10They show an eye formation Roosevelt leaks and light El Mitchell down a wide right wide wide right car down the other way.
- 1:54:17And the Colts are not ready to put it in play again.
- 1:54:20Whoops contact has made his Jones pulls back the throw but the penalty flag has been dropped to show you quite wide went right up the Jones stop right in front of that reached out and yank the football.
- 1:54:32I think it's Jones is pulling these guys off side because he got a little bit of a jerk.
- 1:54:38Well let's see what the referee.
- 1:54:46Jones jerked.
- 1:54:54We'll find out from Haggerty here it is.
- 1:54:58All he says is he doesn't define and tell you who the person is well done in the quarterback and movies head.
- 1:55:08But it looks like he's moving his shoulders to Steve for that has come in now that defensive line and going out to get a little bit of a breather is white white at the 16 yard line Jones drops a throw looks to find a receiver throws into the end zone
- 1:55:21and it's complete Raymond Chester tried to make the catch in the end zone and didn't get to it. Jack Lambert is down there.
- 1:55:28Chester was guilty of interference.
- 1:55:31What's a little push among friends.
- 1:55:36I'll tell you one thing that's not a Lambert to Arthur Donovan would fit into a few of the football teams that you played with years ago.
- 1:55:43Really is that you say look at he really did he he watches on an instant replay he actually punched Lambert in the face.
- 1:55:52And he's right to you call him Jack.
- 1:55:55Well they come up with a second I don't think too much to get thrown out again.
- 1:55:58That's still 15 Jones has a split backfield behind him to take away my back to throw.
- 1:56:04He lobs it up in the air Roger Carr can't get to it.
- 1:56:08I guess Roger Carr was out of bounds Brown wouldn't get many territory to move in.
- 1:56:14You think that official has to use a comb to brush his hair.
- 1:56:17Watch that talk on the sorry.
- 1:56:20You know he was out of bounds before he you know you can't go out of bounds and come back in and make the play.
- 1:56:29And white goes out of the ball game holes goes out of the ball game here comes Lambert back in and he brings with him linebacker Lauren Tars.
- 1:56:35Is this is not a penalty if you go out of bounds and come back in and catch the ball.
- 1:56:39I think it is.
- 1:56:40Yeah.
- 1:56:41Be an unsportsmanlike conduct kind of a call.
- 1:56:43They even had a complete forward pass with it.
- 1:56:46I know there's a penalty on it.
- 1:56:47There is.
- 1:56:48Yeah.
- 1:56:49Wide right Dowdy.
- 1:56:50Roger Carr the other way comes your put some third down 15 at the stealer 16 yard line.
- 1:56:57Jones yanks it away.
- 1:56:58Here they come he throws to Dowdy.
- 1:57:00Dowdy's got it at the five penalty fly go down as Dowdy goes inside the five yard line.
- 1:57:05The man making the tackle J.T. Thomas.
- 1:57:08Let's see what the flag is all about.
- 1:57:10George Coon says it's against the Steelers.
- 1:57:13I have been against Chester Chester violated he was hit.
- 1:57:16Although they threw to Dowdy there was foul committed against Chester.
- 1:57:20I think.
- 1:57:21They were all over.
- 1:57:22He thinks it's a passing affair.
- 1:57:24He thinks he's lying.
- 1:57:26Well the defensive pass and affairs penalty declined the Baltimore Colts hold on a minute.
- 1:57:32It's just wait a minute.
- 1:57:33We're not declining the penalty.
- 1:57:35We accept the penalty because that'll give us the first down.
- 1:57:39Sure.
- 1:57:40Give them a first down at the five.
- 1:57:41Right.
- 1:57:42Because they need to go to the one yard line in order to get a first down.
- 1:57:44The first down at the eight yard line.
- 1:57:46The eight yard line.
- 1:57:48Jones is in the game.
- 1:57:52First down.
- 1:57:53For the Colts the dealer eight thirty three to seven the Steelers lead eleven twenty seven remaining.
- 1:58:01Wide right down in the other way car.
- 1:58:03Light El Mitchell at Roosevelt Leaks the split backfield behind Bert Jones.
- 1:58:08Bert not having one of his better days throwing the ball gives it to light El a sweep on the right and light out of the five for the one and down he goes at that spot.
- 1:58:15Light El did not get in.
- 1:58:16Jones has thrown the ball twenty four times completed eleven.
- 1:58:21And they're going to spot light down somewhere around the two yard line.
- 1:58:25They bring it back in and spot it out the one yard line.
- 1:58:28OK.
- 1:58:29Second and goal from the one.
- 1:58:33And I don't know if it's the soup on number thirty twenty three.
- 1:58:37Pretty good ball player Mike Wagner a safety man from Western Illinois.
- 1:58:41He wrestles them down to the ground.
- 1:58:43Light El Mitchell is out of the ball game Roosevelt Leaks and Don McCauley the running back second down and goal from the one yard line to turn the gift to Leaks left side touchdown Baltimore.
- 1:58:52Leaks went over the left side for the score.
- 1:59:00The Steelers now thirty three Baltimore coming up on fourteen if the point after is good.
- 1:59:06With ten forty four remaining.
- 1:59:08I think you've got to say they haven't quit.
- 1:59:13They haven't quit.
- 1:59:18They've got to figure out some way of stopping that offensive unit of the Steelers and getting that football back something they have not been able to do effectively in the first half of the ballgame.
- 1:59:27They did shut them out of the third quarter the point after penalty flag drop kick is OK.
- 1:59:32And let's see what the penalty flag is all about.
- 1:59:35The officials talking over it may have been offside on the Steelers part of the point after offside Pittsburgh declined Baltimore with ten forty four remaining in the fourth quarter with a score.
- 1:59:45The Steelers thirty three the Baltimore Colts 14 timeout here in Baltimore back in one minute.
- 1:59:52Well the Colts have hung up their second touchdown drive covering sixty five yards and ten plays and Linhardt kicked off now from the forty yard line.
- 2:00:00And his big old Cunningham Benny a rookie from Clemson the fellow we talked about Arthur with that fantastic size.
- 2:00:06We feel like Brooks Robinson.
- 2:00:10There's a tight end he showed up.
- 2:00:13And Linhardt did a good job masking that thing he approached that ball at full speed and then tried to hook it to the side and Benny Cunningham grabbed it.
- 2:00:21This has been quite a surprise this year.
- 2:00:23Linhardt I really have a great year he really has had a great year. One of the very best kickers in all the football first down at midfield for the Steelers.
- 2:00:31The gift goes to Harrison Harrison off the left side bounces off the tackle and he gets drafted about the call forty eight second down and eight now for the Steelers for WVOB and Belair Maryland and all of our network stations will pause now for station identification.
- 2:00:44This is the Metro media Baltimore Colts football network.
- 2:00:48Well the Steelers second down eight at the Baltimore forty eight they've got Harrison and Fuqua setbacks.
- 2:00:53Stallworth wide left swung wide right.
- 2:00:55Bradshaw quarterbacks without a fake he a deep drop ready to throw sets up fires down the middle Lin's wants got it and down he goes the penalty flag has been dropped right along in the offensive backfield where usually you figure if you see a flag it could be holding.
- 2:01:14He's doing it Mansfield the center's feet. I guess he he was holding one of the officials in that Oakland New England ballgame through a penalty marker and hit a player right on the helmet with it yesterday.
- 2:01:28I'm telling you that they have to get bigger lighter lenses I guess the Colts have had the best of this.
- 2:01:38Really Sam Davis the guard that's true. The penalties against the Steelers have really helped keep the Colts in the ballgame.
- 2:01:46Second down 19 now from the Steelers forty two they show an eye formation with Harris and the front man in the eye and Fuqua the second man they take away by Bradshaw he flares it out the Fuqua Fuqua is in the clear up to midfield you put down to the Baltimore forty to the thirty five to the Baltimore thirty to the Baltimore thirty two yard line.
- 2:02:05Twenty eight yard line goes Fuqua you think that wasn't a great call.
- 2:02:09Anything I said about Bradshaw I don't really take it back. He is pretty smart.
- 2:02:14He's had a great day throwing the ball down that's a good pass it has to be perfectly thrown him back flair and out of the eye and he had some great blocking going on down there too.
- 2:02:23They really were loving people. I wonder that they sit on it and you suggested earlier save something for Oakland next week but they're using things that you've never heard of.
- 2:02:32Barry Mullins made a whale of a block cracking back there that play for the Steelers with a first down now the ball resting in the Baltimore cold twenty seven yard line Bradshaw the inside hand off the Fuqua sweep on the right side cuts behind a good block.
- 2:02:46It was inside the twenty to the Baltimore eighteen or nineteen just a matter of the clock running out now let me tell you they're just they're blowing them out of there. The words of the great old man we view banks you say I'm in Paris but he never got hit.
- 2:03:04The ball being spotted down and it'll be a first down for the Steelers.
- 2:03:20First half of the Baltimore sixteen Bradshaw takes it away gets to the Fuqua tries the left side it's open again inside the 10 goes Fuqua and the Steelers you mentioned a moment ago the Colts of course have not quit they don't know how to quit and neither do the Steelers they just keep right on coming after you.
- 2:03:36Dan White made the tackle all resting at the 10 yard line of the Baltimore Colts is second down and for thirty three to 14 the Steelers are leading the Baltimore Colts and this late stage in the ballgame.
- 2:03:56Some of the speculators are getting a little bit unhappy and that will not be tolerated shouldn't be tolerated at any time. All ready to go Bradshaw gives it to Harrison down the middle at the five to the four he's in for the touchdown.
- 2:04:10Harrison scores right down the middle for the Steelers. That was just a delayed draw a trap up the middle and it was just greatly executed.
- 2:04:19Mike Barnes gets blocked out of there real good. He's the only guy that touched him all the way up. This guy came in late but he just pushed him in for the touchdown.
- 2:04:30Well the Colts this afternoon against the Steelers from the what is it they say Vince the city of bridges.
- 2:04:35They are getting they're getting a thumping this afternoon they're getting a lesson that how a championship football team can operate when it's gutted in high gear and the Steelers have had it in high gear from the moment they walked out on the field a few hours ago.
- 2:04:47They should have stayed on the bridges instead of coming here. Mansfield is going to try to point after touchdown. He hits it looks pretty good. Mansfield scores he kicks the point after touchdown and it's now the Steelers 40 to 14.
- 2:05:01Arthur there's a break in the action. Let's pause now for this message.
- 2:05:14Well with seven minutes and 37 seconds left the outcome has not been in doubt for quite a little while this afternoon. The Steelers now lead it by 40 to 14.
- 2:05:24They have just done a magnificent job in all departments and have clearly been this afternoon unquestionably this afternoon. The much better football team Bobby Walden will kick it off and Howard Stevens waiting down on the 10 yard line.
- 2:05:38Well that hits it they missed it off the side of the foot and it's going to go out of bounds at about the Baltimore 27. Did you ever see such bad guys.
- 2:05:46And let me tell you we've been kidding about it but they better get something better get your well for next week. I want to be doing this well with a lead of 40 to 14.
- 2:05:54They're not going to you know use up your other they're going to get rest him and treat him and see if they can get him ready for Oakland.
- 2:06:00And I got two words for Oakland next weekend. Watch out luck. Good luck. Be ready. Amen. Because I think this team is going to take them apart.
- 2:06:11I'll tell you this is a great looking football team. As a Baltimore broadcaster you naturally have to be kind of a Baltimore Colts fan. I am very proud of the fact that I am.
- 2:06:20But this afternoon the Steelers have just handed it to the Baltimore Colts. They have been just a much much better football team.
- 2:06:26I will see an onside kick here. Well you might not be deliberate though. He popped it up. Back goes Ron Lee. Ron Lee takes it at the Baltimore 30.
- 2:06:35Thirty five now to 40 and is going to be taken down at the 45 yard line. Baltimore goes to work at that spot. First down at their own 45.
- 2:06:42I'll tell you a tackle made by Lauren Taus. Big retro shot is going to be rolling over somewhere watching this kick going on.
- 2:06:49Remember the afternoon the evening. No it was an afternoon game down in Dallas Texas when Mumbles Steve Meyer kicked off and the wind hit it and blew it behind him.
- 2:06:57Everybody on our kickoff team started running down and all of a sudden they all looked up in the air. There goes the ball behind them. They all turn around. New voice.
- 2:07:05Well here goes the double wing formation now from Baltimore and the takeaway by Birdie. He's got nothing to do but try to keep putting points up there.
- 2:07:12Throw to Roosevelt leaks and leaks his head at the 45 with a first down and a penalty flag is dropped back around the 40 yard line.
- 2:07:19Jack Ham made the tackle for the Steelers at the 45 yard line. Come on. Stop throwing up flags so we can get out of here.
- 2:07:28Anybody want to volunteer for the locker room show. I'll tell you what Vince. I don't think the locker room show will be that difficult today.
- 2:07:34Down through the weeks this golf football team has proven that they are that they've got a lot of class that they've always been good pros and very gracious about appearing on postgame shows.
- 2:07:44Not only after victories but after losses and I think you'll find them to be their gracious self again.
- 2:07:50Second down and 20 now. Well Chuck I think it does you good to build a relationship with some of these fellows to allow you to do that because some members of the press from out of town asking the pointed questions it's a little tougher for them.
- 2:08:08But there's an old trite expression again if you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen. Right. Amen brothers.
- 2:08:13Second down and 20 at the 35 Jones pulls it away his back to throw rolling left penalty flag is down throws it upfield for grabs and it goes out of bounds.
- 2:08:20There goes another flag. They were rough sides. They were right defensive and moved before the ball was snapped.
- 2:08:27Well I wonder you look at a you look at a football game like this and the Baltimore Colts have been just manhandled by the Steelers this afternoon.
- 2:08:35They're losing at 40 to 14 and I think call football fans begin to wonder now what changes up to the Colts have to make to be able to play on a level with teams like the Steelers.
- 2:08:45And that is a topic that you can discuss with quite a lot of the world during the offseason Chuck.
- 2:08:50You're right. Watching what they do.
- 2:08:52They go some of the Steelers or they look like they just come back from the battle of Gettysburg.
- 2:08:57Yep.
- 2:08:59Rocky Blyer and some other fellows got a big. Oh that's what that's Frank O'Hara.
- 2:09:05Thank you.
- 2:09:06As is the ribs and the trouble breathing Jones is back to throw again.
- 2:09:11Here comes pressure he ducks out of the pressure and then they can't go anywhere.
- 2:09:14The Steelers are all over him looks like Ernie Holmes is there and the Steelers just keep coming.
- 2:09:19You know Chuck everybody was there and nobody got blocked.
- 2:09:23They still have the starting linebackers Ham and Russell and Lambert in the game so he can't throw quick ones to the backs.
- 2:09:30Which has been a problem all day long and that's been one of the biggest reasons the offense hadn't been able to move it.
- 2:09:36And they're not worried about the run now.
- 2:09:39No.
- 2:09:40And they're just teeing off on them.
- 2:09:41Seven minutes left.
- 2:09:42This is fun time everybody grab a bone. They're out there to do it.
- 2:09:47And if the Colts were in the same position well we've seen them in that position.
- 2:09:50They'd be doing the same thing.
- 2:09:53Jones with back to throw once again to see if he can find anybody.
- 2:09:57Flares at the Don McCauley to the 40. Don McCauley goes out of bounds at the Baltimore 40.
- 2:10:01Maybe at the first down mark well no not quite.
- 2:10:05He's got 11 yards to go for the first down.
- 2:10:07Just exactly. Just exactly. Third down about 11 now.
- 2:10:10The ball resting at the Baltimore Colts.
- 2:10:12Pull down a minute the penalty flag has been dropped.
- 2:10:14Offside down there against the Colts.
- 2:10:17Come on.
- 2:10:18Offside Baltimore.
- 2:10:20Well.
- 2:10:22These guys have been watching too much movies.
- 2:10:27Well I don't know Arthur I'm not in a position to say but one thing I can tell you is that they certainly have not been able to come up with a good effort against the Steelers this afternoon.
- 2:10:34Whether that's due entirely to the Steelers or not I'm not in a position to say.
- 2:10:38But they have not shown the kind of football they are capable of showing.
- 2:10:42Any more penalties will be end up in the end zone.
- 2:10:45Maybe everybody go away.
- 2:10:48A lot of folks are.
- 2:10:50See the seats.
- 2:10:53They're down long yardage for Baltimore.
- 2:10:55They've got second down and a half a day.
- 2:10:57Back to throw is Jones again.
- 2:10:59Plenty of time this time throws up the middle and his Chester can't get to it at the 40 yard line.
- 2:11:04It'll be third down coming now.
- 2:11:08It's just turned out into a route now I don't think it's even.
- 2:11:15Like I remember time Vince when we were playing the 49ers and 58 we had to come out in the second half and score a lot of points.
- 2:11:22Well John was moving the team and it was down on the eight yard line and made to go and he called the timeout he come over to we've.
- 2:11:29And he says what he got for me we've and says I don't know John what do you got.
- 2:11:33And John said let's write him over here give me something I could use.
- 2:11:36And we've walked around and we've come back and said to John get me a first down.
- 2:11:40John throws a pass for a touchdown and we've turned around everybody thought he was a genius.
- 2:11:47Here's that third down and still tremendous yardage Jones setting up the throw.
- 2:11:51Here comes a line back at talls and he's got him.
- 2:11:53Taws downs him back at the 15 yard line.
- 2:11:57And it is fourth down a tremendous yardage for Baltimore back at the road 15.
- 2:12:01Don't get him mad it's bad enough as it is.
- 2:12:05Now the Steelers have come to Baltimore this afternoon and shown the Baltimore Colts football fans that the winning streak that carried them into the playoffs was not a fluke.
- 2:12:13They are just a son of a gun of a football team and they deserve to win this afternoon's ballgame.
- 2:12:19They've outplayed the Colts in every way matter shape and form.
- 2:12:23No doubt about it with but one exception and that's the punting game and they haven't had the punt but what once no twice.
- 2:12:32Here is David Lee waiting for the snap from center.
- 2:12:35He's got it OK and David just hit the daylights out of it all the way back to the Steelers 37 goes.
- 2:12:42Poe along the 40 yard line come now reverses his field eating up the clock as Poe and he's going to be spun down at the 35 yard line.
- 2:12:49That's six minutes remaining on a long time to go.
- 2:12:51There's a timeout with a score.
- 2:12:53The Steelers 40 the Baltimore Colts 40.
- 2:13:05Well the Steelers will take over on their own 35 yard line and they've got a brand new quarterback out there.
- 2:13:10Mike Krusik a kid who carried him when Bradshaw was not able to do so he won the six games that he started.
- 2:13:15He was a son of a gun of a youngster and he's now quarterbacking the Steelers.
- 2:13:19He turns gives it off to Fuqua tries the left side he bolts straight ahead for almost five about to the 40 yard line before the Colts take him down.
- 2:13:27And you know what it doesn't look like they're going to let up either when you get it in gear just keep it in gear.
- 2:13:33Amen.
- 2:13:34He'd go right through the week right out the open.
- 2:13:35One of my favorite golf pros used to say when you get them two down get them three when you get them three down get them four when you get them four get them five.
- 2:13:43Krusik was six for six games one so he knows what it feels to be the winner at the 40 yard line.
- 2:13:51He got a second down at about six Krusik all ready to go.
- 2:13:55He takes it away wants to throw the ball he flares it out to Harrison Harrison at the 40 is going to get taken down by Stan White Bruce Laird.
- 2:14:01And there's little no gain on the play.
- 2:14:04So it'll be second down and just about so let's call the second out of five.
- 2:14:12Yes sir.
- 2:14:13Third down at five.
- 2:14:14Excuse me.
- 2:14:15Now you wonder back to the bomb to Frank Lewis on the third play of the game after we'd stopped two running plays and I have to ask it what kind of an effect that may have had.
- 2:14:25It could it could have really could have done you know hurt him.
- 2:14:31Krusik yanked it away without a fake wants to throw the young quarterback a rookie plenty of time throws over the middle it's caught by number 83 Theo Bell at the Baltimore cold forty seven yard line for a first down.
- 2:14:42Who's actually pick you up on to you get all that time to throw the ball.
- 2:14:47First down Steelers at the Baltimore cold forty seven.
- 2:14:51You know you think back again and we have to do that still is probably open kickoff member that we like the ball loose we might have had it on the 20 yard line.
- 2:15:01I mean it might have just delayed what's happened again.
- 2:15:04I think I think it would have been a better football if you're asking for the turning point of the ballgame I thought it was a flip of the coin.
- 2:15:14Here comes to you. He's going off to the left and then into the middle and he has stopped right along the line of scrimmage in other words just the Steelers have just been clearly the much better football team and the Colts did manage to put together one drive but there was just a just meaningless because Pittsburgh has been that good.
- 2:15:33You talk about the Pittsburgh defensive line and linebackers they keep building them up and building them up but today the outstanding and part of the whole of the whole game has been their offensive.
- 2:15:44Absolutely right. No two ways about it. This is a good and this team they'll block their block Oakland right out of the ballpark.
- 2:15:52And then in the game nine on nine Krusik in a quarterback takes it away without a fake wants to throw looks to find a receiver throws over the middle Reggie Harris has got it to the 40 yard line of the Colts to the 45 and then down to about the 30 yard line goes Harrison taken down by Brian Salter a little bit of a flare to the back coming out of the backfield and the Steelers have another first down at the cold 30.
- 2:16:11I watched this boy. He's a crew Zach is it the quarterback. He's like he's a crew Zach. I watched in college the opening game against Notre Dame two years ago and they would have won the ball game at the D.C. coach let him throw the ball and he lost by about six points.
- 2:16:25And his kids didn't and he's got a great arm. Well this has been one of the most disappointing Sundays in Baltimore cold history and sometime a home field advantage had absolutely no effect none whatsoever on the Steelers.
- 2:16:40Maybe next time we'll play without any fans in the stands. Here's Drusek pressure coming Fred. He runs out of the pressure looking for somebody to throw to fires and hits the old bell.
- 2:16:49Bell is inside the Baltimore 20 yard line with another stealer first down pretty good looking kid that Mike Krusek six foot out of 96 founder from D.C.
- 2:16:58Austin Carver Virginia or whatever that means. Where'd you come from Virginia. First down Steelers of all of the Colts 19 the Colts now you know in the longest two minutes of their career their season waiting for that clock to run down.
- 2:17:13Some bad Sundays here about 1954 we played the Rams in the first place was a was a sleeper. You remember that. Sure. Yeah. Those 30 first teams. Well with the score of the Steelers 40 the Colts 14 there is the two minute warning will be back in 60 seconds.
- 2:17:31Well we'll go to the final two minutes. The Steelers will go to Oakland next Sunday the day after Christmas and we'll play the Oakland Raiders and I would doubt very much if Oakland has what it takes to stop this team if they play the way they have played this afternoon.
- 2:17:46Yeah I kind of think events actually. What happened to the wheel at halftime. It was supposed to be with the spoke on the field. Well you may be shooting up.
- 2:17:55I'll do a second. I'll do a second rather has him down a set inside the 20th the 19 first day. He's going to throw again throws right down the middle and it's off the hands of the intended receiver Ernie Powell.
- 2:18:08Second down and 10. Now the wheel has done a lot. We've had a lot of great characters like that. I remember the late Willie the Rooter. He was a terrific guy when you were playing. We hope Mr.
- 2:18:17Gaddis who's been around here forever. I love it. Give me a say. You know he's like playing second team now to the wheel and the spoke. Oh God. This is my section every week.
- 2:18:29I saw him. We saw him before the ballgame today. Great guy. He sure is. Well the Steelers now have a second down and 10 at the 19. Krucek back to throw once more. He throws over the middle and it's caught I think by Harrison at about the 16 yard line and Harrison is taken down by Daryl Luce.
- 2:18:44I'll tell you they finally got to the quarterback. Krucek got nailed. That third and seven. Now the there'll be no running on the field this afternoon. The Colts here in Baltimore.
- 2:18:58The conduct of our fans I think has been exemplary compared to the conduct of a lot of fans I've seen around the country. I'm glad it's going to be that way. The people don't you know behave in such an ill mannered fashion and race out on the field and do silly things.
- 2:19:11It's just now you just can't tolerate that and they will not be allowed to do it this afternoon. Here's the give on the draw to Pucca. Pucca down to the 10. To the five. Hits Mumford I think it was and took him down at about the three yard line.
- 2:19:23That wasn't Mumford excuse me. This is just getting himself to injury. That's all it's doing. Maybe maybe Pittsburgh better save these points because maybe in years to come the things turn around. History has a way of turning things around.
- 2:19:37And so it just happened to them. Well they put some second team players in. What do you want them to do? That's exactly right. I'd like to have them run the clock out.
- 2:19:46Well the Colts have been handed a rubbing this afternoon they will not soon forget. And they have learned that the championship caliber football is a different brand of football and the Steelers are very definitely a championship caliber team.
- 2:20:00The give goes to Fuqua to the left side and he is not going to make it down to the 23 second mark and counting. I'll tell you right now I'll take a long shot. You want to pick a Super Bowl winner for 1977. I'll pick the Steelers.
- 2:20:13Now there is a little class here Donnie. They're letting the clock run out. They really are.
- 2:20:18I mean they just came and they played great football. That they did. They really played great football and they deserve to win this afternoon and they did it in a championship fashion. They did it in a most convincing manner.
- 2:20:30That's the end of the game. The Steelers went at 40 to 14. Well the hopes of the Baltimore Colts for a Super Bowl year this year in Baltimore were just rolled right off the cliff by a fantastic display of power football on the part of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 2:20:44Who came to Baltimore this afternoon and proved once again that the way they wrapped up the season with nine straight victories, the way they threw in five shutouts was not a fluke. It wasn't accidental. It wasn't a weak schedule.
- 2:20:54It was the result of a very, very good football team doing their job the way they are capable of doing it. They scored first this afternoon. Three plays into the football game. They had a third and nine of their own 24.
- 2:21:08Well the hopes of the Baltimore Colts for a Super Bowl year this year in Baltimore were just rolled right off the cliff by a fantastic display of power football on the part of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 2:21:18Who came to Baltimore this afternoon and proved once again that the way they wrapped up the season with nine straight victories, the way they threw in five shutouts was not a fluke. It wasn't accidental. It wasn't a weak schedule.
- 2:21:28It was the result of a very, very good football team doing their job the way they are capable of doing it. They scored first this afternoon. Three plays into the football game. They had a third and nine of their own 24. Bradshaw cut loose a 76 yard bomb to Frank Lewis.
- 2:21:42And that had kind of set the tone of things to come as the Steelers overwhelmed the Colts and just blew them right out this afternoon. Bradshaw had a great day throwing for 264 yards completing 13 of 18.
- 2:21:53Franco Harris ran for 132 yards before he left the game with bruised ribs. His replacement Reggie Harrison carried the ball 11 times for 43. Lewis only caught two balls all afternoon but for a total of 103 yards and one of those a touchdown.
- 2:22:06You stack that against the performance of Bert Jones. 11 of 25 this afternoon for 144 yards. In the running department, Lydell Mitchell carried the ball 16 times and the best he could get out of it was a total of 55 yards.
- 2:22:18It was the Steelers from the opening gun and they are go to Oakland next Sunday afternoon to play the Oakland Raiders. And I think if you ask every Baltimore Colts fan who walks out of the stadium this afternoon to a man they would tell you that the Oakland Raiders might be in a lot of trouble when they take on the Steelers next week.
- 2:22:33For three touchdown passes 76 yards to Frank Lewis 30 and 11 yards to Lynn Swan. Reggie Harrison scored from a yard out and 10 yards away. Roy Jarrell kicked two field goals of 45 and 25 yards as the Steelers sadly beat the Colts 40 to 14. Franco Harris gained 132 yards on the ground.
- 2:22:50Frank Lewis caught two for 103 yards. Lynn Swan caught five for 71 and Terry Bradshaw only missed completing five passes. He was 13 of 18 good for 264 yards. Bert Jones a 17 yard TD pass to Roger Carr was Baltimore's only point in the first half and Roosevelt Leakes scored from a yard out in the fourth quarter.
- 2:23:08The Pittsburgh led 26 to 7 at the half and they beat Baltimore 40 to 14. Now next Sunday it's Pittsburgh in Oakland for the AFC Championship game and Pittsburgh Steelers looked very convincing today in beating the Colts and Baltimore was really never in the ballgame after midway through the second period of play.
- 2:23:26Now Bert Jones was 11 of 25 for 144 yards. The Colts on the ground gained a total of 71 yards. Lydell Mitchell 55 yards was the high man for the day on 16 carries. While the Pittsburgh Steelers gained a total of 228 yards on the ground.
- 2:23:41Franco Harris had 132 and 18 carries and really that ground game just kept Baltimore at unease the whole game and really dominated the ballgame. Terry Bradshaw had 264 yards. Krusik had 44. 308 yards total in passing for Pittsburgh.
- 2:23:57228 on the ground. That's a total of 536 yards on offense for Pittsburgh and a total of 40 points. And when you consider the fact that Pittsburgh blew a touchdown when they fumbled on the two yard line of the Colts and Roy Jarrell missed an extra point.
- 2:24:11The score could have easily been 48 to 14. So the final though was 40 to 14. So we'll be back with more on the WCBM scoreboard show in just one minute. Ladies and gentlemen this is Tom Davis back at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore and a plane has just crashed into the upper deck.
- 2:24:25It's a private plane. It's a single engine plane. Chuck Thompson has the binoculars on it. The plane has crashed into the upper deck around section one or 41 behind home plate. The plane came inside the horseshoe of the stadium while we were out on the commercial and the plane went into the upper deck as it tried to rise and get above the stadium.
- 2:24:42Luckily there was no spectators around when it happened and there are some spectators up there trying to get the person out that was flying the plane. The plane crashed into the upper deck and luckily no fans were hurt. Now evidently the driver of the plane is hurt and there are fans up there now trying to free whoever was driving the plane.
- 2:25:00They got him out Tom. You know before he came in I saw that guy come along once before and I said to Toledo Bracey I said there's a guy buzzing the stadium and here he came in again. Chuck you want to put the mic on you got the binoculars on there.
- 2:25:14The time he went to the closed end that's when he crashed into it. I think before he was going to the upper deck. You're right that's where I saw him. Chuck put that other mic on if you want to real quick and you got the binoculars up there. I could not believe it while we were out for the commercial we were just standing here waiting to come back on the air and this plane came inside the stadium and it's a single engine plane according to Chuck Thompson. Chuck you got Chuck's mic up. I'm trying to see if there's any identifying marks on the airplane but I can't see anything at all. The numbers are not available to me. It's just got a blue stripe around the tail.
- 2:25:43Section and the manner in which it is sitting in the upper deck. We can't read the registration numbers on the plane. The pilot was carried out of the plane and is on his way now to the hospital I would think and the police did a very good job along with the other personnel of the stadium getting up there with a fire extinguisher.
- 2:25:58And fortunately there were no spectators in that area in the closed end of the grandstand or the horseshoe. People are there been many many people hurt. Chuck I couldn't believe it when the plane started to go up in the air. I said he'd never made all of it's unbelievable.
- 2:26:12It looked like there was no way it was going to go up and then he just crashed into the almost where the seats that are chair back end and where the bench seats begin say in section 41 or 40 right behind home plate in the baseball section in the upper deck and it's roughly about 15 or 20 rows up where the chair back seats end.
- 2:26:28He hit the stadium because if he had gone over he would have killed a lot of people out in the parking lot. That's right Artie. Oh my it is unbelievable. What's happening to our society? Why are we getting that sick?
- 2:26:38Oh boy I mean it's kind of a gas Artie. I hope it's that.
- 2:26:43Well you know you have to do a heck of a bend to land in the playing field. Somebody's going back in the plane again.
- 2:26:52To see if there's anybody else in there as far as we know there was just the pilot but somebody is going in there now and apparently that was the only person in the airplane Arthur because they certainly would have made another effort to get another person out if there had been anybody in there.
- 2:27:06They got the only. He's just thinking Chuck right. It looked like he just didn't get that altitude going. Well there should have been no business for him to be inside this horseshoe to begin with. Absolutely not. He broke every rule in the book in flying an airplane and number one he's not supposed to be at that kind of an altitude and it was just you know very poor judgment on the pilot's part.
- 2:27:23Yeah they're bringing the stretchers so there's a nurse there Chuck. So there may be somebody still in the plane. There might be another person. No I think they're going to take it into the runway where the pilot is. All I can say ladies and gentlemen this is one of the most astonishing things I've ever seen in my entire life.
- 2:27:39The plane came into Memorial Stadium about three minutes ago a single engine plane. It tried to get up behind the horseshoe could not and it crashed into the upper deck in the section 41 or 40 I'm not exactly sure but it's right above the baseball press box in the upper deck.
- 2:27:54The plane now is nosedive into the stands with the tail portion standing straight up in the air. The gentleman who apparently was driving the plane or piloting the plane is out of the plane. The plane luckily did not get into any fire situation nothing really. Thanks to the personnel around the radio who knew exactly what to do.
- 2:28:10I know this reminds me of way back in World War II the kamikaze pilots. Well that's what it looked like. I mean to tell you I've never seen anything like it in my entire life. It was almost like seeing a movie come to life. But you know people are now the greatest blessing if there is a blessing in such a tragedy is the fact that the seats where he hit were empty and no spectators have been involved other than for the man flying the airplane.
- 2:28:35Can you imagine Chuck what would have happened if it would have happened say a two minutes sooner. I mean there were people still coming down there two minutes before that. I mean it's just lucky. Luckily they got the binoculars and you can see the
- 2:28:46that's as Ernie Tyler points out supposing that you know the score had been the other way and the Baltimore Colts had won the ballgame. How many people would have been in that area. There'd been hundreds of people there and it wouldn't have made any difference to the man flying the airplane. Obviously his judgment was just not what was needed to successfully operate an aircraft and unfortunately he's paid a rather severe price for it. Chuck Hanero says I put the binoculars on there he knocked out about three rows on those chairback seats.
- 2:29:15And the first thing we did was to look to see and there are no spectators involved just the person so far as we know the only injury that came as a result of this unfortunate incident has been to the person flying the airplane.
- 2:29:28Not too many people taking pictures here. Everybody's astounded. I mean I think most of the people here in Baltimore that are still in the stadium are in shock and I would say it's less than maybe two thousand people in the park right now. Yeah there's very very few people. All in all it's just been a very unfortunate day.
- 2:29:42There's a few people at the end of the game. No not like ten minutes later. I was watching Tracy and I were watching a man at police down there and I was saying gee you know what a fine looking group it is and I saw a plane coming around. I said you know I think somebody's buzzing his field.
- 2:29:57I heard you say that Arthur. I never saw the plane. I heard it but didn't see it. And then again I said here it comes. And I looked and saw it. I think it was like in the movies. Oh it was unbelievable. All I can say is I mean it was just like a movie coming to life.
