- 0:00Speaker 1: Ephesians chapter six, verses one through four. I want to
- 0:05Speaker 1: show you from the scripture, the centrality of the home
- 0:11Speaker 1: in the evangelism and discipleship of the next generation. The
- 0:15Speaker 1: centrality of the home and the evangelism and discipleship of
- 0:19Speaker 1: the next generation. God has a plan for multi-generational faithfulness.
- 0:23Speaker 1: That plan is the family. unfortunately, many of the things
- 0:27Speaker 1: that we currently involve ourselves in actually work against God's
- 0:31Speaker 1: plan of the family. And so currently, what we're doing is,
- 0:36Speaker 1: we're actually, this is, let me give you, for example,
- 0:40Speaker 1: when I say that what we're doing is unbiblical, let
- 0:42Speaker 1: me give you what we say is the goal of
- 0:45Speaker 1: many of our youth ministries. What we say is this,
- 0:48Speaker 1: the youth ministry at so-and-so Baptist church exists to evangelize teenagers,
- 0:53Speaker 1: to disciple them, and to equip them to go and
- 0:56Speaker 1: evangelize other teenagers. Two problems with that. Number one, nine
- 1:02Speaker 1: times out of ten, we never mention parents. And number two,
- 1:09Speaker 1: not your job. Whose job is it to evangelize my children?
- 1:15Speaker 1: The church? No, it's mine. Whose job is it to
- 1:18Speaker 1: disciple my children? The church? No, it's mine. Which means
- 1:21Speaker 1: that at best, any youth ministry that's going to exist
- 1:24Speaker 1: at all had better have a mission statement that says,
- 1:27Speaker 1: we exist to equip and assist parents as they do
- 1:35Speaker 1: what God called them to do and not the church.
- 1:41Speaker 1: It's one thing for me to make that statement. But
- 1:45Speaker 1: I don't want you to just take my word for it.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Ephesians chapter 6, verses 1 through 4. But trust me,
- 1:50Speaker 1: you needed to know all of that. Children, obey your
- 1:52Speaker 1: parents and the Lord, for this is right. Honor your
- 1:54Speaker 1: father and your mother, which is the first commandment of
- 1:56Speaker 1: the promise, that it may be well with you and
- 1:58Speaker 1: that you may live long on the earth. Fathers, do
- 2:01Speaker 1: not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up
- 2:03Speaker 1: in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. The centrality
- 2:07Speaker 1: of the home in the evangelism and discipleship of the
- 2:12Speaker 1: next generation. the centrality of the home that please note
- 2:17Speaker 1: there's a difference because what's happening now is people are
- 2:20Speaker 1: looking at the data and a lot of our youth
- 2:22Speaker 1: ministry programs are now moving toward ministry youth and their
- 2:25Speaker 1: families and so we were saying the kids are ours
- 2:28Speaker 1: and it's our job to evangelize them our job to
- 2:31Speaker 1: disciple them and our job to mobilize them now we
- 2:33Speaker 1: say it's still our job but we want parents to
- 2:35Speaker 1: help us that's still the wrong answer Well, brother, but
- 2:42Speaker 1: you don't understand. These families out there, they're not doing it.
- 2:46Speaker 1: Isn't that interesting? For 30 years, here's what we've been
- 2:48Speaker 1: telling them. We're trained professionals. Please don't try this at home.
- 2:53Speaker 1: You don't understand your kids. Your kids don't like you.
- 2:55Speaker 1: Trust me. Just drop them off now. And now we're
- 2:59Speaker 1: mad because they're doing what we've taught them to do
- 3:01Speaker 1: for 30 years. All right, I'm going to get to
- 3:07Speaker 1: this text. Come on. Three things. demonstrate the centrality of
- 3:12Speaker 1: the home in this process of evangelizing and discipling the
- 3:15Speaker 1: next generation. First, the context of that first verse. Children,
- 3:21Speaker 1: obey your parents and the Lord, for this is right. Now,
- 3:24Speaker 1: in order to understand the context of that verse, you've
- 3:25Speaker 1: got to back up to the paragraph before it. You
- 3:28Speaker 1: back up to the paragraph before it, and you start
- 3:30Speaker 1: with husbands, love your wives as Christ also loved the church.
- 3:35Speaker 1: But the problem with that is, you get there, you've
- 3:37Speaker 1: got to back up the paragraph before that one to
- 3:39Speaker 1: see the context of this section. Wives, be subject to
- 3:41Speaker 1: your own husbands as to the Lord. The problem with
- 3:44Speaker 1: that is that it is the beginning of the section,
- 3:48Speaker 1: but it's got no verb. I know what you're saying.
- 3:52Speaker 1: We got a verb right there. Be subject. Isn't that
- 3:53Speaker 1: the verb? It ought to be italicized in your Bible.
- 3:56Speaker 1: The reason it's italicized is because it's borrowed from verse 21.
- 4:00Speaker 1: In the Greek, there's no verb there in verse 22.
- 4:03Speaker 1: So it's borrowed from verse 21. Problem with starting with
- 4:06Speaker 1: verse 21? If you start with verse 21, you start
- 4:08Speaker 1: at the end of a paragraph. And you can't do that.
- 4:11Speaker 1: So in order to understand the context of Ephesians chapter six,
- 4:14Speaker 1: verse one, you got to go all the way back
- 4:16Speaker 1: to Ephesians chapter five and verse 15. Trust me, we're
- 4:20Speaker 1: going somewhere. When you back up to Ephesians chapter five
- 4:23Speaker 1: and verse 15, here's what you get. You get three
- 4:26Speaker 1: contrasts and then you get three commands and then you
- 4:30Speaker 1: get three contexts. All right. Three contrasts. Let's look at them.
- 4:36Speaker 1: Beginning verse 15. Therefore be careful how you walk, not
- 4:39Speaker 1: as unwise men, but as wise, making the most of
- 4:41Speaker 1: your time, because the days are evil. That's contrast number one.
- 4:44Speaker 1: Contrast number two, next verse. So then do not be foolish,
- 4:47Speaker 1: but understand what the will of the Lord is. That's
- 4:49Speaker 1: the second contrast. Don't be foolish, understand the Lord's will.
- 4:51Speaker 1: Third contrast. Do not get drunk with wine, for that
- 4:54Speaker 1: is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit. On the
- 4:57Speaker 1: third contrast, you get three commands. Those three commands are
- 5:02Speaker 1: connected to the third contrast. Look at what he says,
- 5:04Speaker 1: beginning of verse 19. How do you know if somebody's
- 5:07Speaker 1: living a spirit-filled life? Verse 19, speaking to one another
- 5:10Speaker 1: with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making melody
- 5:13Speaker 1: in your hearts to the Lord. If you show me
- 5:16Speaker 1: a worshipful person, I'll show you a person who's more
- 5:19Speaker 1: than likely being controlled by the Spirit of God. Show
- 5:21Speaker 1: me a person who's not a worshipful person, and I'll
- 5:23Speaker 1: show you somebody who more than likely is not being
- 5:25Speaker 1: controlled and is not yielding to the Spirit of God.
- 5:29Speaker 1: You can't tell me that somebody is spirit-filled and they're
- 5:32Speaker 1: not worshipful. The two just don't go together. Fair enough?
- 5:36Speaker 1: Look at the next verse. Here's the next command, verse 20.
- 5:39Speaker 1: Always giving thanks for all things in the name of
- 5:42Speaker 1: our Lord Jesus Christ, to God, even the Father. So
- 5:45Speaker 1: you're a worshipful person. Secondly, you're prayerfully thankful. Prayerfully thankful.
- 5:51Speaker 1: Show me somebody who's prayerfully thankful, and I'll show you
- 5:53Speaker 1: somebody who's probably being controlled by the Spirit of God.
- 5:57Speaker 1: Show me somebody who is neither prayerful nor thankful, and
- 6:01Speaker 1: I'll show you somebody who's not Spirit-filled. Fair enough? Those
- 6:06Speaker 1: were easy. Verse 21. Be subject to one another in
- 6:10Speaker 1: the fear of Christ. Show me somebody who submits to
- 6:16Speaker 1: proper biblical authority in their life, and I'll show you
- 6:20Speaker 1: somebody who is spirit-filled. Show me somebody who does not
- 6:25Speaker 1: submit to proper biblical authority in their life, and I'll
- 6:27Speaker 1: show you somebody who's not spirit-filled. Now, go to chapter
- 6:31Speaker 1: 6 and verse 1 and look at it in context. Children,
- 6:34Speaker 1: obey your parents and the Lord, for this is right.
- 6:37Speaker 1: In other words, three contrasts, three commands. On the third command,
- 6:45Speaker 1: you get three contexts. Context number one, wives and husbands.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Context number two, children and parents. Context number three, servants
- 6:52Speaker 1: and masters. And here's what he's saying in verse one.
- 6:55Speaker 1: Show me a child who is not submissive to their
- 6:59Speaker 1: parents' authority, and I'll show you a child who's not
- 7:02Speaker 1: yielded to the Spirit of God. Which means if we
- 7:06Speaker 1: want to lead children toward being Spirit-filled, we don't lead
- 7:09Speaker 1: them toward the youth pastor, we lead them toward mom
- 7:11Speaker 1: and dad. Because the measure of their yielding to the
- 7:16Speaker 1: Spirit of God is whether or not when their parents
- 7:19Speaker 1: say something, they do what they're told, when they're told,
- 7:22Speaker 1: and with a respectful attitude. That's what obedience is. So
- 7:27Speaker 1: number one, we see the centrality of the home in
- 7:29Speaker 1: the context here. He says, you want to take the
- 7:31Speaker 1: spiritual temperature of a young person. You take the spiritual
- 7:35Speaker 1: temperature of a young person by whether or not they
- 7:37Speaker 1: are submissive to the authority of their parents. That's the
- 7:42Speaker 1: authority in their life. That's the spiritual authority in their life.
- 7:45Speaker 1: The spiritual authority in my child's life is me. The
- 7:49Speaker 1: spiritual authority in your child's life is you, which means
- 7:52Speaker 1: anything that the church does. I better not rob spiritual
- 7:58Speaker 1: authority from mom and dad.
