- 0:02Speaker 1: And the afore mentioned Kate Povitch joining us now, we
- 0:05Speaker 1: appreciate it very much. This is a man who should
- 0:07Speaker 1: be tired because he has logged the third most innings
- 0:11Speaker 1: on Baltimore's staff. Yet he's a young gun, so maybe
- 0:14Speaker 1: he's not tired or I don't know. Kate. Thank you
- 0:17Speaker 1: for being with us. Appreciate the time Trevor really wanted
- 0:19Speaker 1: you on the show. How's it going right?
- 0:23Speaker 2: Thank you very much for having me on.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Teammate.
- 0:28Speaker 3: I gotta preface this by saying, mister Kevin Brown up
- 0:34Speaker 3: in the booth has been keeping me up to date
- 0:36Speaker 3: on your your game preparation methods, which we'll get into
- 0:40Speaker 3: in just a moment. But first thing I wanted to
- 0:42Speaker 3: ask you. I want to ask you about a teammate,
- 0:46Speaker 3: Trevor Rodgers, and the things that he has been doing
- 0:48Speaker 3: this year, because I don't think people understand how good
- 0:51Speaker 3: Trevor Rodgers has been this year. He's got one hundred
- 0:54Speaker 3: innings and he is a fellow lefty. So what, if anything,
- 0:58Speaker 3: have you been able to learn by just watching Trevor
- 1:01Speaker 3: Rodgers throw the ball?
- 1:05Speaker 2: I think if you just watch kind of last year
- 1:07Speaker 2: when we first got him and the struggles that he
- 1:11Speaker 2: went through, and then you know, spending these this offseason
- 1:15Speaker 2: trying to get back to the all star caliber pitcher
- 1:18Speaker 2: that he was starting in TRIPAA, and then coming up
- 1:22Speaker 2: to make a start in Boston just absolutely shoving. I
- 1:27Speaker 2: think he was the additional man for a doubleheader. So
- 1:29Speaker 2: he went back down for take a couple more weeks
- 1:32Speaker 2: and then came up and it has just been on
- 1:34Speaker 2: a roll ever since. And it's like, even even the
- 1:38Speaker 2: outings that you think he might be getting into a
- 1:41Speaker 2: little bit of trouble, he just finds a way to
- 1:44Speaker 2: work out of it. And for a guy to have
- 1:47Speaker 2: been able to see kind of last year what his
- 1:49Speaker 2: year was like, and see the offseason and even the
- 1:53Speaker 2: beginning of this season, it's been remarkable seeing how he's
- 1:57Speaker 2: turned things around, how he's kind of refound himself. I
- 2:00Speaker 2: think he talks about confidence being a big thing, uh
- 2:04Speaker 2: him getting that back. I mean, I've been able to
- 2:06Speaker 2: learn a lot from him just in that aspect alone.
- 2:10Speaker 4: All Right, Yeah, I left, He's got to stick together.
- 2:11Speaker 4: You guys are you guys are always off on your
- 2:13Speaker 4: own island. I don't I don't understand it, but I
- 2:15Speaker 4: gotta I gotta ask about my favorite position on the field,
- 2:19Speaker 4: Samuel Basil, How is it for you being here all
- 2:24Speaker 4: year and then you bring in a rookie catcher and
- 2:28Speaker 4: then you also had to bring in another Like you
- 2:30Speaker 4: guys have gone through a couple of catchers this year,
- 2:32Speaker 4: with Gary going down, with Adleie going down? How hard
- 2:36Speaker 4: is it? And I'm not gonna ask about Luke Jackson'm
- 2:38Speaker 4: gonna ask about the fact that I'm not Luke Jackson.
- 2:40Speaker 4: Is it Luke Jackson I'm forgetting? Is that Alex Jackson?
- 2:43Speaker 4: Alex Jackson? I was saying a picture and I've had
- 2:46Speaker 4: to apologize Alex for me. But with Samuel Bassio, you
- 2:51Speaker 4: have so much, so much like prospect status all around him.
- 2:56Speaker 4: As a pitcher, y'all could honestly probably care less about
- 3:00Speaker 4: how he hits and that's his like name tag, that's
- 3:03Speaker 4: his that's his calling card when he gets to the
- 3:06Speaker 4: big leagues. How hard of a transition has it been
- 3:09Speaker 4: for him? And how hard of a transition is it
- 3:12Speaker 4: for you as a pitcher, knowing what you need to do,
- 3:15Speaker 4: but then have to get it across to Samuel Bossaio
- 3:18Speaker 4: as your catcher for nine innings?
- 3:21Speaker 2: Yeah, honestly, I think for him, it really hasn't been
- 3:26Speaker 2: that much of an adjustment, you know, I think for
- 3:30Speaker 2: especially for his age, he's very smart. You know, our
- 3:35Speaker 2: our pitching staff, our pitching coaches have all worked with
- 3:37Speaker 2: him a great amount on you know, trying to catch
- 3:40Speaker 2: him up to speed with how certain guys might set
- 3:43Speaker 2: up different situations. But like yesterday, it was was the
- 3:49Speaker 2: first time I had him behind the plate for me,
- 3:50Speaker 2: and you know, asking questions in the meeting about you know,
- 3:55Speaker 2: how we should approach different guys, adjusting set up to
- 4:00Speaker 2: certain pitches, if you know, bouncing my curve ball early,
- 4:03Speaker 2: adjusting kind of the starting spot for that in order
- 4:07Speaker 2: to get it to land in the zone. You know,
- 4:09Speaker 2: the bat's definitely there, the bats special, but you know,
- 4:13Speaker 2: the way he's able to catch and learn kind of
- 4:15Speaker 2: on the fly, I'm sure it's pretty difficult a bunch
- 4:18Speaker 2: of a bunch of guys you haven't seen behind the plate. Uh,
- 4:22Speaker 2: you know, I'm sure he got some of us a
- 4:25Speaker 2: little bit in spring training, but you know, to be
- 4:28Speaker 2: in Triple A for for half the year and then
- 4:30Speaker 2: come up here and be able to adjust and catch guys,
- 4:34Speaker 2: he hasn't had a lot of experience catching yet. Uh,
- 4:37Speaker 2: it's it's really cool, been really special to see just
- 4:40Speaker 2: how he's developed from from that aspect.
- 4:45Speaker 3: Okay, talking about preparing for games, and this is really
- 4:49Speaker 3: what I wanted to get into, And now I'm realizing
- 4:52Speaker 3: I had a photo of the types of things that
- 4:55Speaker 3: you started doing recently in the last month or so
- 4:58Speaker 3: or maybe a little bit over a month to prepare
- 5:00Speaker 3: for games. You get ready to face a lineup keys
- 5:04Speaker 3: for you, which obviously communicating these to to Sam and
- 5:08Speaker 3: and to uh to Tadley behind the plate is probably
- 5:10Speaker 3: part of that. But take us through a little bit
- 5:13Speaker 3: of of what that preparation or what changes you've made
- 5:16Speaker 3: in that preparation and how it helps you.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Yeah, for me it was I think early on it's
- 5:23Speaker 2: difficult trying to figure out, you know, how to how
- 5:27Speaker 2: to game plan. Uh, for yourself, I think it's easy
- 5:31Speaker 2: to kind of look at a lot of different things.
- 5:34Speaker 2: You know, you try to look at where can I
- 5:36Speaker 2: go to get swing and miss, where can I go
- 5:38Speaker 2: to get chase? Where can you know maybe maybe a
- 5:42Speaker 2: guy watching the pitch at a certain location more often
- 5:45Speaker 2: than not, uh, And in a sense for some guys,
- 5:50Speaker 2: that can be a lot of information to try and
- 5:52Speaker 2: hold for a whole whole lineup For me, I I
- 5:58Speaker 2: think I found myself getting a little mixed up between
- 6:00Speaker 2: certain guys.
- 6:01Speaker 4: You know.
- 6:02Speaker 2: I would prepare and and then I would kind of
- 6:04Speaker 2: be in the middle of one guy and be thinking
- 6:07Speaker 2: on the mound, all right, was this the pitch that
- 6:10Speaker 2: I needed to throw him? Or is this a different guy?
- 6:14Speaker 2: And so that led me to kind of what I'm
- 6:16Speaker 2: doing now. I think I watched it might have been
- 6:21Speaker 2: a short or a video that you had on YouTube
- 6:23Speaker 2: talking about Baseball Savant's new swing path and kind of
- 6:29Speaker 2: how you can see the average swing path of a guy,
- 6:35Speaker 2: and I've really just kind of gone off of that.
- 6:38Speaker 2: It's easy for me to remember if a guy has
- 6:40Speaker 2: a steeper swing or a flatter swing, And that's honestly
- 6:45Speaker 2: been kind of a cheap for me as far as remembering,
- 6:48Speaker 2: you know, if I need to go above the zone
- 6:50Speaker 2: on a guy, or if I need to go breaking
- 6:53Speaker 2: balls more away more inside. So I thank you for that.
- 6:57Speaker 2: That definitely helped me out a lot.
- 7:02Speaker 1: That's awesome. Do you feel good about that, Trevor? Look
- 7:04Speaker 1: at you shaping the young minds.
- 7:06Speaker 3: I definitely have nothing to do with while we got
- 7:10Speaker 3: hen on here. Definitely didn't know that at all.
- 7:13Speaker 2: Mark and my little little excess on the zone.
- 7:17Speaker 3: I love it, man, I'm glad I get out.
- 7:19Speaker 1: Okay, let me ask you this. You make your first
- 7:21Speaker 1: opening day roster this year with the Baltimore Orioles. As
- 7:25Speaker 1: I mentioned at the top of the interview, you've logged
- 7:27Speaker 1: a lot of innings. How has Kade Povich grown over
- 7:31Speaker 1: the course of this season? Has it been a massive,
- 7:34Speaker 1: you know, Bell curve in terms of growth. What do
- 7:37Speaker 1: you look back at now and it would have told
- 7:39Speaker 1: yourself on opening Day that you've learned over the course
- 7:42Speaker 1: of the season as we sit here on September nineteenth.
- 7:46Speaker 2: Yeah, I think the biggest thing is really just to
- 7:49Speaker 2: take kind of each moment and stride. I think for
- 7:53Speaker 2: me personally, it was a lot of trying to maybe
- 7:57Speaker 2: do too much early on, whether that be last year
- 8:00Speaker 2: the start of this year. And you know, I think
- 8:04Speaker 2: when you narrow it down to kind of the simple
- 8:06Speaker 2: things that the best guys do is get ahead, get
- 8:09Speaker 2: to do strikes, and then try and get onto the
- 8:11Speaker 2: next hitter as soon as possible after that, I think
- 8:14Speaker 2: that that helps out pictures a lot. I think you
- 8:17Speaker 2: see batting averages, and you know a lot of stuff
- 8:22Speaker 2: goes in the pitcher's favor when you're able to get ahead,
- 8:24Speaker 2: and then it also helps the offense a lot. You know,
- 8:27Speaker 2: when you're able to go out and have a quickening
- 8:30Speaker 2: and you know, get the bats back in the dugout
- 8:33Speaker 2: and kind of get on a roll. That's that's kind
- 8:37Speaker 2: of a big thing in order to try and to
- 8:40Speaker 2: to obviously help help yourself out, but help your teammates
- 8:43Speaker 2: out as well on the on the hitting side. So
- 8:46Speaker 2: I think I've done a lot better of slowing things
- 8:48Speaker 2: down and not trying to, you know, necessarily be somebody
- 8:52Speaker 2: I'm not. I think that's also something that's very easy.
- 8:56Speaker 2: You can struggle and then try and look for answers
- 8:59Speaker 2: by trying to be somebody else because you think what
- 9:02Speaker 2: you're doing is not working. But I think taking a
- 9:05Speaker 2: step back and just remembering what got you here has
- 9:09Speaker 2: kind of helped me out a lot.
- 9:11Speaker 4: More recently, you guys as a team playing spoiler? Are
- 9:14Speaker 4: you guys playing spoiler? Down the stretchy? You got five
- 9:17Speaker 4: more games? I think with the Yankees are six more games?
- 9:20Speaker 4: Do you talk about that? Yeah?
- 9:24Speaker 2: I mean we know where we're at and so we're
- 9:28Speaker 2: just trying to win as many games as possible down
- 9:31Speaker 2: the stretch and the race is close, so trying to
- 9:36Speaker 2: see if we can, you know, maybe make things interesting
- 9:39Speaker 2: in that aspect.
- 9:41Speaker 1: Kate, we appreciate it.
- 9:42Speaker 4: Best of luck.
- 9:43Speaker 1: You are a big leader, my friend, making that opening
- 9:45Speaker 1: day roster for the Baltimore Orioles, and it's only going
- 9:48Speaker 1: to get better from here. Just keep paying attention to
- 9:50Speaker 1: Trevor May and you will be fine. Thanks for taking
- 9:55Speaker 1: the time to be with us on foul Territory.
- 9:56Speaker 3: Have a good day.
- 9:58Speaker 2: Thank you. I appreciate you all having me have your
- 10:00Speaker 2: wont
