- 5:19Lights Out Dinner Shines Light on Disability Awareness by Macy Swafford. Corbyn,
- 5:27the Freeman Foundation and Baptist Health Corbin hosted Lights Out
- 5:30Dinner in the Dark on Tuesday at the Corbin Center,
- 5:34offering a blindfolded dining experience to benefit autism awareness and
- 5:39disability focus programs. The evening open with Freeman Foundation founder
- 5:45Travis Freeman, thanking volunteers, his family, and Baptist Health Corbin
- 5:52for helping make the event possible. Freeman, who lost his
- 5:56sight at age twelve due to rare infection, found at
- 5:59the Freeman Foundation to raise awareness and support for individuals
- 6:04with disabilities. He said Baptist Health Corbin's support grew after
- 6:08an early conversation with hospital president Angela Foster. I just
- 6:13went in asking for a donation, and Angela said, I
- 6:18think you're asking far too little, Freeman said. Foster then
- 6:22addressed the crowd, thanking attendees for supporting the cause and
- 6:26recognizing Baptist Health Corbin's rehabilitation team. She said the hospital's
- 6:31pediatric outpatient rehabilitation program helps children with autism and other
- 6:37developmental needs build communication skills, independence, and confidence. What may
- 6:43seem like a small milestone can be major breakthrough, Foster said.
- 6:49The first word a new skill, a moment of connection.
- 6:52Those moments matter. Speakers Cameron and Susan Mills then took
- 6:58to stage to share their family stories and their experience
- 7:02raising Susan's son, Alex, who was diagnosed with autism at
- 7:07age two and a half. Susan Mills spoke about the
- 7:10challenges of getting a diagnosis, finding therapy service, and working
- 7:15through insurance barriers. I had to fight to get a diagnosis,
- 7:19she said, adding that her work through My Autism Tribe
- 7:24and her children's book series grew from wanting to help
- 7:28families having meaningful conversations about differences and inclusions. Missus Mills
- 7:34also spoke about her Dino Sprout children's book series, which
- 7:39uses illustrated stories to help children better understand differences such
- 7:44as autism, anxiety, sensorary challenges, and other disabilities. She said
- 7:50the books are intended to encourage conversations about inclusion and
- 7:55accepting some among children. Parents and educators. Teach your child
- 8:00the world, and teach the world about your child, Mills said.
- 8:04Cameron Mills, known for his days with University of Kentucky basketball,
- 8:09reflected on becoming a stepfather to Alex and learning more
- 8:13about autism through his family. I didn't know what autism was,
- 8:17he said. I didn't know how many people dealt with
- 8:21disabilities until I entered this world with Susan. The couple
- 8:25also emphasized the importance of advocacy, support systems and community
- 8:30spaces where individuals with disabilities feel accepted and included. Following
- 8:36their remarks, Freeman spoke about the mission of the Freeman Foundation,
- 8:40which he said works to raise awareness and the needs
- 8:43of potential of people with disabilities. He said the proceeds
- 8:48from the event would support the east Side Club, Censory
- 8:51of Gym, Aaron's Hope for Friends, the Freeman Foundation, and
- 8:56the efforts to add all inclusive playground equipment to local parks.
- 9:01Freeman also shared the story of a young blind boy
- 9:04in Haiti named David, whom the Foundation helped receive cataract
- 9:09surgery after being abandoned by his family. Freeman said the
- 9:13surgery allowed the child to begin school and eventually live independently.
- 9:19Through this experience of eating a meal blindfolded in complete
- 9:23darkness to simulate blindness, attendees left the event with a
- 9:28greater understanding of the challenges individuals with disabilities may face,
- 9:34while also supporting programs and resources that assist those with
- 9:39impairments and promote inclusion within their community. Our next article
- 9:46is Corbyn Card business expands amid online sales boon by
- 9:51Macy Swafford. What started as a hobby collecting Pokemon Ugo
- 9:58cards has quickly grown into one of Corbyn's fastest growing
- 10:01businesses as TCG Empire owner Joshua Howe continues expanding both
- 10:08his storefront and online presence through TMU. Hal thirty seven,
- 10:14originally from Hickory, North Carolina, moved to Corbin after the
- 10:18company he worked for purchased another business locally. Before entering
- 10:23the trading card industry full time, how spent thirteen years
- 10:28building furniture. I just got tired of doing the same
- 10:31thing for so long and decided to switch what I
- 10:35was doing, how said. How said his interest in trading
- 10:38cards first began during the early years of Pokemon, before
- 10:42eventually expanding into Ugo, where he became interested not only
- 10:48in playing, but also buying and reselling cards. While the
- 10:52business initial initially started small, how said he realized TCG
- 10:59Empire had become something much larger after he left his
- 11:03full time job and began investing completely into the business.
- 11:08The biggest risk is bringing on people and then them
- 11:12trusting that I will make sure they get their check
- 11:15every week, how said. You have to spend money to
- 11:19make money. Tcg Empire opened its Corbin storefront in February
- 11:24of twenty twenty five, but the business has seen explosive
- 11:28online growth since launching on TMU in October. How said.
- 11:34The company's repack bundles, collections of guaranteed hit cards sold
- 11:39at affordable prices, quickly became popular with customers, and the
- 11:43first six months alone, the business sold over seventy two
- 11:47thousand cards bundles on TMU, how said, tcg Empire now
- 11:53sells roughly fifteen thousand repacks monthly, with prices generally ranging
- 11:58from eleven dollars to around thirty dollars, depending on the
- 12:02value included. Demand accelerated so quickly that how said the
- 12:07company outgrew its original setup almost immediately. Late last year,
- 12:12We were doing like one thousand, five hundred to one thousand,
- 12:16six hundred orders, how said, We were actually doing it
- 12:20out of the small storefront that we have, and it
- 12:23was kind of a mess. The company now fulfills as
- 12:27many as one thousand, five hundred daily orders, prompting How
- 12:32to invest in a dedicated warehouse space. Tcg Empire recently
- 12:38moved operations into a larger warehouse facility in Corbin after
- 12:43termite issues forced them from their previous location. It's a
- 12:47lot smoother now, House said, everything's more organized and everything
- 12:51has its place. The rapid growth also allowed How to
- 12:56expand his workforce, bringing on five new full time employees
- 13:01while transitioning from previous part time staff into full time positions.
- 13:06Beyond the business itself, How said he hopes tcg Empire
- 13:11continues serving as a positive part of the local community.
- 13:15The business regularly hosts trading card game events, casual game nights,
- 13:21Dungeons and Dragon sessions, and learn to play programs for
- 13:26games like Pokemon and Magic. The gathering including events alongside
- 13:31the Corbyn Public Library. We've tried to do things for
- 13:35the community, House said. We always try to be fair
- 13:39with the customer locally and just be fair with the community.
- 13:43How believes part of the recent resurgence in trading cards
- 13:47comes from nostalgia, with parents now introducing the hobby to
- 13:51their children. I think there's been a lot more families
- 13:55getting into a house, said, I think this kind of
- 13:58brings like a bonding moment. As TCG Empire continues growing
- 14:03online and locally, How said, the company's focus remains on
- 14:06expanding its catalog, improving operations and maintaining the community atmosphere
- 14:12that helped build the business. We definitely plan to continue growing,
- 14:17he said. We always strive to get everything order out
- 14:23every day. To visit their storefront in Corbin. Visit them
- 14:27at sixteen o three South Main Street and there is
- 14:31a picture of the man wearing a T shirt that
- 14:34says Empire. Then there's another picture that it's of the
- 14:39warehouse and it says how and his team operate their
- 14:42cells out of a portion of a warehouse located on
- 14:45the American Greeting Card Road in Corbin. Our next article

- 19:21article is lawsuits filed against Knox County Deputy over a
- 19:25fatal twenty twenty five UTV crash by Macy Swofford, London.
- 19:31Two federal law suits have been filed in U S
- 19:35District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky in London
- 19:39against Knox County Knox County Sheriff Mike Smith and Knox
- 19:43County Sheriff Deputy John Michael Mikey ash Ashearst in connection
- 19:50to the July twenty fourth, twenty twenty five, fatal UTV
- 19:54crash that resulted in the death of a twenty one
- 19:57year old Todd Saint John. One lawsuit was filed by
- 20:02the estate of Todd Saint John through personal representative Mackenzie Eads,
- 20:08while the second was filed by Jerry Stewart, who was
- 20:12riding in the side by side with Saint John at
- 20:15the time of the crash. Both lawsuits claim Ashurst turned
- 20:20his police cruiser into a deadly weapon without any legal
- 20:24justification by using it to ram the side by side
- 20:27vehicle Saint John and Stuart were riding in. According to
- 20:31the filings, Stuart went to Saint John's home on July
- 20:35twenty fourth of twenty twenty five, before the two later
- 20:40drove the side by side into a nearby gas station.
- 20:43The lawsuit states that after leaving the station, Saint John
- 20:48drove a trailer near the property when Ashurst allegedly pulled
- 20:53behind them with the emergency lights activated. The complaints claim
- 20:58Ashurst is not investigating the serious crime and that Saint
- 21:03John and Stuart posed at no safety threat. The lawsuit
- 21:07further claimed that in less than thirty seconds after encountering
- 21:11the UTV, Ashhurst ram his cruiser into the side by side,
- 21:16causing it to overturn. The filings state Saint John suffered
- 21:23constrict pardon me terrible injuries and was pronounced dead at
- 21:28Baptist Health Corbyn at ten twenty three pm. Stuart survived,
- 21:34but claims he continues to suffer lasting an emotional and
- 21:37physical trauma from the incident. Stuart's law suit states not
- 21:42a knight passes without Jerry reliving the horror horrifying image
- 21:47of Todd bleeding out in the street while Jerry is
- 21:50unable to help save his best friend's life not a state.
- 21:56This lawsuit states that Saint John's death left behind his
- 21:59feeling say and two young children, adding, instead of planning
- 22:03their wedding and the rest of their life together, Mackenzie
- 22:07was left to plan Todd's funeral. Both complaints also accused
- 22:11Knox County and Sheriff Smith of knowingly rehiring Ashurst despite
- 22:16an alleged history of misconduct. The lawsuits referenced a previous
- 22:21fatal shooting involving Ashurst in twenty sixteen. The complaints further
- 22:26claimed Sheriff Smith new Ashurst had twice been denied employment
- 22:32with the Kentucky State Police following background investigations, had prior
- 22:38citizen complaints during previous law enforcement employment, and had resigned
- 22:43as Livingstone police chief after alleging engaging the physical, threatening,
- 22:48and aggressive behavior toward an incoming mayor at a city
- 22:52council meeting. Additionally, the lawsuits referenced a social media post
- 22:57allegedly made by Ashurst after the crash, claiming he changed
- 23:02his Facebook profile picture to a side by side vehicle
- 23:06just days after the incident. The complaints state that the
- 23:09post demonstrated a total lack of remorse. Lawsuits seek compensatory damages,
- 23:17attorney feeds, and punitive damages claims including excessive force negligent hiring,
- 23:24negligent supervision and training, wrongful death, and other state law claims.
- 23:30They come after a Knox County grand jury declined to
- 23:33indict the deputy last October. When reached for comment, Sheriff
- 23:38Mike Smith said he could not comment on the lawsuits
- 23:42due to ongoing litigation. Our next article is Corbin Public
- 23:46Library spotlights literacy programs and community resources at Rotary by
- 23:51Macy Swafford, Corbin. The Corbyn Rotary Club met last Thursday,
- 23:56where members celebrated another successful International Day fundraiser before hearing
- 24:02from guest speaker Maddy Flannery of the Corbyn Public Library
- 24:06about upcoming library programs resources in the future of the
- 24:10Dolly Parton Imagination Library program locally. Before Flannery's presentation, Corbyn
- 24:17Rotary members announced that this year's International Dinner fundraiser, held
- 24:22in partnership with the London Rotary Club, was able to
- 24:26generate a total of sixteen thousand, six hundred and twenty
- 24:30dollars through the Corbyn Club. Officials announced both clubs would
- 24:34send checks in the amount of twelve thousand, six hundred
- 24:38twenty three dollars and twenty one cents to each of
- 24:41the Rotaries Foundation, Polio Plus Initiative, Debbie Harden and Sudar Patel.
- 24:49They do such a good, fantastic job leading this, said
- 24:53Rotary Secretary Treasurer J Bill Sash As members applauded the
- 24:58organizers and congratulated one another on another successful event. Flannery,
- 25:03who has worked at the library for nearly three years
- 25:07after first volunteering there while in high school, spoke about
- 25:11the wide range of services available through the library. Beyond books,
- 25:16we have a lot more than just books, Flannery said.
- 25:19We have DVDs for patrons to check out. A lot
- 25:22of the patrons have told me I've canceled my cable
- 25:25subscription and I just come here and get movies. She
- 25:29detailed several library resources, including audio books, large print books, puzzles, games,
- 25:36a sound room, a podcast studio, as well as a
- 25:40stem lab equipped with three D printers, science kits, and computers.
- 25:47We have three D printers available to the public for use,
- 25:51she said, even that in the very low costs compared
- 25:54to buying your own three D printer or using a
- 25:57company or something that charges you to use it. Flannery
- 26:01also highlighted the library's history room, crediting volunteer Tiffany houctionuns
- 26:07for digitizing and organizing historical records and newspapers. According to Flannery,
- 26:14the room now allows visitors to search archive newspapers, yearbooks,
- 26:19and historical records digitally by name, year, or publication. She
- 26:25also discussed the library's annual Summer Reading program, which begins
- 26:29June fifth and is designed to encourage children to continue
- 26:34reading and learning during summer break. The main purpose of
- 26:37this is to keep kids from falling behind over the summer,
- 26:42Flannery said. The idea is that they consistently come to
- 26:47the library over the summer to continue to read, continue
- 26:51to have social interaction, continue to learn that teachers may
- 26:55be able to spend less time having to review at
- 26:58the beginning of the year. This year's summer reading theme
- 27:02is Unearthed a Story which will feature a dinosaur theme, decorations,
- 27:08and activities throughout the summer. Flannery additionally spoke about the
- 27:14library's annual ghost tours, which combine the local history with
- 27:19Halloween themed storytelling centered around downtown Corbyn landmarks. Much of
- 27:25Flannery's presentation focused on the Dolly Parton Imagination Library program,
- 27:30which provides one free book each month to the children
- 27:34from birth until age five. Not everybody has the ability
- 27:39to get to the library to get books, Flannery said,
- 27:43so for a lot of people, this may be the
- 27:45only way that they get books to their kids before
- 27:48they go off to school. Flannery explained the Friends of
- 27:51the Corbin Public Library currently funds programs for children in Knox,
- 27:57Laurel and Pardoning in Whitley County, contributing roughly seventeen thousand
- 28:03dollars annually, which is matched by the state of Kentucky. However,
- 28:08she noted the program's future remains uncertain. This concludes the
- 28:13reading of the Times Tribune. Please stay tuned for continued programming.
- 28:17Thank you for joining me on behalf of everyone here
