- 0:00Speaker 1: Back on the Women's Basketball Coaches Show, and as advertised,
- 0:03Speaker 1: we are visiting with Megan Caffrey of the Big East
- 0:06Speaker 1: Conference Big East Digital, and she will be at the
- 0:09Speaker 1: Big East Tournament doing many different things. So let's start there. Meghan,
- 0:13Speaker 1: I know you're going to be a busy girl Friday
- 0:15Speaker 1: with three games, but what else are you doing this
- 0:17Speaker 1: weekend for the Big East Conference?
- 0:19Speaker 2: Well, Bob verset and foremost, I'm so excited.
- 0:21Speaker 3: We had been talking about this all season long, so
- 0:23Speaker 3: I'm pumped to finally be on here chatting some Big
- 0:26Speaker 3: East women's hoops with you. So thank you first and
- 0:28Speaker 3: foremost for getting me on here. But I'm excited. So
- 0:32Speaker 3: I will I kind of have a couple of different roles,
- 0:34Speaker 3: like you mentioned this upcoming weekend. I'll broadcast the later
- 0:39Speaker 3: two games actually on Saturday, which I'm really excited to
- 0:43Speaker 3: f s two games, so I'll be sidelined for those,
- 0:46Speaker 3: and then all throughout the rest of the weekend with
- 0:48Speaker 3: the tournament, I'll be We do a lot of work
- 0:51Speaker 3: on the digital side of things, so if you're following
- 0:53Speaker 3: along on Twitter on Instagram, all of the socials, we
- 0:57Speaker 3: put out special interviews that go a little bit more
- 1:00Speaker 3: in depth after games, and we just have fun with it, really, right,
- 1:04Speaker 3: like this is the start for all of us of
- 1:07Speaker 3: a very very long march, so we try and have
- 1:12Speaker 3: some fun, we make some light of it, and then
- 1:14Speaker 3: honestly just helping out the conference in whatever ways that
- 1:18Speaker 3: they might need. So kind of jack of all trades.
- 1:20Speaker 3: If I need to do a little bit of like
- 1:22Speaker 3: camera work for our Twitter stuff, I'll do some of that.
- 1:24Speaker 3: But for the most part, we're keeping me in my
- 1:27Speaker 3: space with what I'm very good at, which is asking
- 1:29Speaker 3: some questions.
- 1:30Speaker 2: There you go good, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:33Speaker 1: All right. So when we got together in October at
- 1:36Speaker 1: Madison Square Garden, no surprise at the top two. That's
- 1:39Speaker 1: where they are. You kind of Creighton. But then you
- 1:41Speaker 1: look at the coaches polls at the beginning of the year,
- 1:43Speaker 1: so many unknowns though, Transfer Portal andil that attle bit.
- 1:47Speaker 1: For the top five teams, the teams that you would
- 1:49Speaker 1: expect to be there year and in year out. The
- 1:51Speaker 1: only big surprise is what Tony Bazilla did with Seaton Hall.
- 1:54Speaker 1: But otherwise it's pretty much what we've seen the last
- 1:57Speaker 1: couple of years. Villanova, Marquette, Creighton. You kind of the
- 2:00Speaker 1: of the list.
- 2:01Speaker 3: Yeah, and I think though it's to note too right, Like,
- 2:04Speaker 3: especially when you look at Marquette, we are used to
- 2:07Speaker 3: seeing them.
- 2:07Speaker 2: At the top of the list.
- 2:09Speaker 3: However, they were able to stay at the top of
- 2:12Speaker 3: the list Bob with a brand new head coach this year,
- 2:15Speaker 3: right of newer players stepping into some roles. I think
- 2:18Speaker 3: it's I'm always big on giving flowers where flowers are due, right,
- 2:22Speaker 3: And when you look at what first year head coach
- 2:24Speaker 3: Ker Conswegua was able to do right, finish twenty to
- 2:28Speaker 3: nine overall, twelve and six in conference play, enough to
- 2:31Speaker 3: get them a first round by and earn the four
- 2:33Speaker 3: seed in the tournament this weekend, I think it's huge.
- 2:36Speaker 3: And you have to remember what Kara did take over
- 2:39Speaker 3: from Meghan Duffy, Right, Meghan Duffy built the program into
- 2:43Speaker 3: what we have known Marquette basketball to be.
- 2:46Speaker 1: Right.
- 2:46Speaker 3: They made the three NCAA tournament appearances in the last
- 2:50Speaker 3: four years, and last year they had these great scores
- 2:54Speaker 3: like Liza Carlin, Jordan King, Mackenzie Hare and they all
- 2:58Speaker 3: left right. So what care was able to do with
- 3:01Speaker 3: some of these players coming out a little bit more so? Right,
- 3:03Speaker 3: you look at Skyler Forbes, Hallie Weiss really having coming
- 3:07Speaker 3: into their own for some of these players who had
- 3:09Speaker 3: been on the roster and stepping into new roles this year,
- 3:12Speaker 3: I think that is so huge and I think it's
- 3:15Speaker 3: really cool to see just how much they had. There's
- 3:18Speaker 3: some struggles for sure during the year, but it's really
- 3:21Speaker 3: awesome to see them back up in that top spot
- 3:24Speaker 3: as well, even though there was some changeover.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Right, And I think it's it's cool too.
- 3:28Speaker 3: Where you mentioned with Seaton Hall, it was what's gonna
- 3:31Speaker 3: happen to the pirates? Right, what's gonna what are they
- 3:33Speaker 3: gonna look like? However, it's just a note to head
- 3:36Speaker 3: coach Tony Bazilla. He's like the transfer king, I feel
- 3:39Speaker 3: like right like this has been so many coaches have
- 3:43Speaker 3: been getting into the transfer transfer portal, even more so
- 3:46Speaker 3: these past couple of years. But Tony has been doing
- 3:48Speaker 3: that for years and has really been able to manage
- 3:52Speaker 3: transfers I think really well and mesh the teams together
- 3:56Speaker 3: really well.
- 3:57Speaker 1: Megan, throughout your season, you get tout with a lot
- 4:00Speaker 1: of the student athletes that play in the Big East here.
- 4:03Speaker 1: What are some of your favorite ones that you've talked
- 4:05Speaker 1: to this year, and maybe a few players that you
- 4:07Speaker 1: can highlight that the fans will see this week at
- 4:09Speaker 1: Mohican son Arina that we don't talk about enough.
- 4:12Speaker 3: I would love to talk about Jury Allen a little
- 4:14Speaker 3: bit with DePaul. She It's funny, right, she's one of
- 4:18Speaker 3: those players who have been in the conference for quite
- 4:21Speaker 3: some time. Winn's Scholar Athlete of the Year, which is
- 4:25Speaker 3: really exciting for her. But I so the conference does
- 4:29Speaker 3: we do was weekly and it was a little bit
- 4:31Speaker 3: more so bi weekly this past year, but we do
- 4:34Speaker 3: it now. It's turned into a digital segment called in
- 4:36Speaker 3: the Bonus.
- 4:37Speaker 2: It's really fun. If you guys don't tune into it,
- 4:39Speaker 2: make sure you're tuned into it. A little plug there.
- 4:41Speaker 3: But we get the chance to talk to players and
- 4:43Speaker 3: we get a little bit more in depth with them.
- 4:44Speaker 3: We get to learn about them a little bit more.
- 4:46Speaker 3: And we have jewelry on this this season, Bob. And
- 4:51Speaker 3: from everything that I knew about her with the DO,
- 4:54Speaker 3: I got to learn so much more about the who
- 4:56Speaker 3: and she is so interesting. She is extremely interestive. She's
- 5:01Speaker 3: so It's funny because I remember in the interview, I
- 5:03Speaker 3: was like, Jory, you're really calm, right, like I'm talking
- 5:06Speaker 3: to you and there's just this really mellow presence. And
- 5:09Speaker 3: it was so interesting because she talked of some battles
- 5:13Speaker 3: of anxiety that she's had and for her she has
- 5:16Speaker 3: found a passion of writing and so she's actually in
- 5:20Speaker 3: the middle of writing.
- 5:21Speaker 2: I believe it was a memoir.
- 5:23Speaker 3: So I was just like, you know, it was one
- 5:25Speaker 3: of those moments that we love watching and we have
- 5:28Speaker 3: the blessing right of our jobs, Bob, How lucky are we, right,
- 5:32Speaker 3: we get to watch hoops, That's what our job is,
- 5:36Speaker 3: and you know, you get so caught up in just
- 5:38Speaker 3: how great these athletes are that you forget sometimes, especially
- 5:42Speaker 3: at this level. Right their college kids, their kids, and
- 5:46Speaker 3: they have so many more interest of what they like
- 5:49Speaker 3: to do, you know, when they think of life outside
- 5:52Speaker 3: of basketball, life after basketball, if that ends for them.
- 5:57Speaker 3: And so it was really cool to get to learn
- 5:58Speaker 3: that about her. And I was telling her, I was like,
- 6:00Speaker 3: keep me post a girl, because I'm gonna definitely want
- 6:03Speaker 3: to read up on that.
- 6:04Speaker 2: It was really cool. That is awesome.
- 6:06Speaker 1: Yeah, Jory had a fantastic year. I mean, Jill Pizzotti
- 6:08Speaker 1: raved the Botter when we made our alone visit out
- 6:11Speaker 1: up to Chicago this year. One of my favorite places
- 6:13Speaker 1: to go. What is your favorite city to go to?
- 6:15Speaker 2: Big East?
- 6:15Speaker 1: Wise by the way, Okay.
- 6:18Speaker 2: We got to talk a little.
- 6:18Speaker 3: But first and foremost, Bob, when you're going out to Chicago,
- 6:21Speaker 3: you gotta tell me are we doing deep dish? Are
- 6:22Speaker 3: you not as much of the deep dish type of
- 6:24Speaker 3: a guy. What's our favorite Chicago thing?
- 6:27Speaker 1: I'm a dish deep dish guy, But Debbie and I
- 6:29Speaker 1: go usually go to Pizano's on the other side of
- 6:30Speaker 1: the arena. We stay at the gate at the Marquee there,
- 6:33Speaker 1: and then that little Italian place on the other side
- 6:35Speaker 1: of wind Trust we go to. Yeah, good place.
- 6:38Speaker 3: Yeah, No, I love it. It's fun because you know,
- 6:41Speaker 3: with the Big East, the conference is so lucky that
- 6:43Speaker 3: we're going to such big cities. Right, You're going out
- 6:47Speaker 3: to a Chicago, Right. We get to go to some
- 6:50Speaker 3: wonderful places when we're traveling. So you're putting me on
- 6:54Speaker 3: the spot because there's so many great places and I
- 6:57Speaker 3: didn't travel. I will say this past season, I didn't
- 6:59Speaker 3: travel too much. But there's this one spot and I'm
- 7:03Speaker 3: blanking on it right now because I didn't get to
- 7:05Speaker 3: go out there. But in o Maha, if I ever
- 7:08Speaker 3: go out to Creighton, there's this really really great steak
- 7:12Speaker 3: steakhouse that I'm always like, we got to go there
- 7:15Speaker 3: and venture that way. So I'm blanking on the name.
- 7:18Speaker 3: I'm gonna try and do some research when you ask
- 7:20Speaker 3: the next question.
- 7:21Speaker 1: To get that Gilbert.
- 7:23Speaker 2: Oh, yes, yes, yes.
- 7:24Speaker 1: Yes, that's right connected to the Marriott. Yep. Been there
- 7:26Speaker 1: a few times.
- 7:28Speaker 2: Yeah, And it's just it's fun.
- 7:29Speaker 3: I mean, that's the we travel so much for this job,
- 7:33Speaker 3: where you kind of have to. I feel like everyone
- 7:35Speaker 3: within it and correct me if I'm wrong. I feel
- 7:37Speaker 3: like we all kind of become little foodies here and
- 7:39Speaker 3: there because it's like new places we need, we need
- 7:42Speaker 3: to try some new foods and you know, whatever the
- 7:45Speaker 3: specialty is with these cities. I will say Chicago. The
- 7:49Speaker 3: first time I went out there, I tried Deep Dish.
- 7:52Speaker 3: So I'm a Jersey girl, Okay, I do like a
- 7:55Speaker 3: thin crust pizza. I will.
- 7:57Speaker 2: I will admit that.
- 7:59Speaker 3: So I tried it because I was like, you have to.
- 8:01Speaker 3: You can't go to Chicago and not try the Deep Dish.
- 8:04Speaker 3: And it's it's so good, but sometimes I'm like it's
- 8:07Speaker 3: so heavy that I need to go to bed right after.
- 8:10Speaker 2: Some stuff to do.
- 8:12Speaker 3: I'm gonna I'm gonna opt for a thin crust instead.
- 8:15Speaker 1: All right, one more segment with Megan. We'll actually get
- 8:18Speaker 1: into the games when we come back on the Yukon
- 8:19Speaker 1: of Women's Basketball Coaches show here on Learfield in just
- 8:21Speaker 1: a minute.
