Transcript
- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's a Monday, the start of a
- 0:15new week. It is the 4th of November and we
- 0:20today get to open up a new book of the Bible.
- 0:23Yes, we're going to open up to the book of Acts where we will
- 0:27get to hear hear how this story goes from Jesus, this man
- 0:33walking and ministering and living here on earth, to his
- 0:37death and resurrection. And then from that point it goes
- 0:41to this faith, this way, this religion which has spread and
- 0:47eventually travels to all the corners of the globe.
- 0:50And this is the beginning of that story, friends.
- 0:53Now, the book of Acts is written by our friend Luke, who wrote
- 0:56the Gospel of Luke. And he wrote this with a very
- 0:59specific purpose in mind. In fact, I'm just going to read
- 1:02you a couple of sentences from the beginning of the Book of
- 1:05Luke. He says many people have set out
- 1:08to write accounts about the events that have been fulfilled
- 1:10among us. They use the eyewitness report
- 1:13circulating among us from the early disciples.
- 1:16Having carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I
- 1:20also have decided to write an accurate account for you, Most
- 1:24Honourable Theophilus, so you can be certain of the truth of
- 1:29everything you were taught. So the Book of Acts is the
- 1:33second part of the Book of Luke. And so as we read this, the same
- 1:38motivation applies. He's writing this to convince us
- 1:42of the truth about Jesus, who he said he was and what he did.
- 1:48And you might think, ah, the story of Acts, that's about the
- 1:51church, It's about the Holy Spirit.
- 1:54Nope, the main character in the book of Acts is still Jesus and
- 1:58all that Jesus accomplishes through his spirit and his new
- 2:02church. So as we read these chapters,
- 2:05keep in mind Jesus is still the protagonist.
- 2:08He is still the driving force behind everything that happens.
- 2:13So having said all that, nothing to do but to pick up where the
- 2:16Gospel of Luke ended and continue with this incredible
- 2:20story. Reading Acts chapter 1
- 2:32in my first book, I told you Theophilus about everything
- 2:36Jesus began to do and teach until the day he was taken up to
- 2:40heaven after giving his chosen apostles further instructions
- 2:44through the Holy Spirit. During the 40 days after he
- 2:47suffered and died, he appeared to the apostles from time to
- 2:51time and he proved to them in many ways that he was actually
- 2:55alive and he talked to them about the Kingdom of God.
- 3:00Once when he was eating with them, he commanded them, do not
- 3:03leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you the gift he promised.
- 3:08As I told you before, John baptised with water, but in a
- 3:12few days you will be baptised with the Holy Spirit.
- 3:16So when the apostles were with Jesus, they kept asking him,
- 3:20Lord, has the time come for you to free Israel and restore our
- 3:24Kingdom? He replied, The Father alone has
- 3:28the authority to set those dates and times, and they are not for
- 3:32you to know. But you will receive power when
- 3:35the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses,
- 3:39telling people about me everywhere in Jerusalem,
- 3:43throughout Judea, in Samaria and to the ends of the earth.
- 3:48After saying this, he was taken up into a cloud while they were
- 3:52watching, and they could no longer see him.
- 3:56As they strained to see him rising into heaven, 2 white
- 3:59robed men suddenly stood among them, men of Galilee.
- 4:03They said, Why are you standing here staring into heaven?
- 4:08Jesus has been taken from you into heaven, but someday he will
- 4:12return from heaven in the same way you saw him go.
- 4:17Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem from the Mount of
- 4:20Olives, a distance of half a mile.
- 4:23When they arrived, they went to the upstairs room of the house
- 4:26where they were staying. Here are the names of those who
- 4:29were present, Peter, John, James, Andrew, Philip, Thomas,
- 4:35Bartholomew, Matthew, James son of Alpheus, Simon the Zealot,
- 4:41and Judas son of James. They all met together and were
- 4:45constantly united in prayer along with Mary, the mother of
- 4:48Jesus, several other women, and the brothers of Jesus.
- 4:53During this time, when about 120 believers were together in one
- 4:56place, Peter stood up and addressed them.
- 5:00Brothers. He said the Scriptures had to be
- 5:03fulfilled. Concerning Judas, who guided
- 5:06those who arrested Jesus. This was predicted long ago by
- 5:10the Holy Spirit speaking through King David.
- 5:13Judas was one of us and shared in the ministry with us.
- 5:18Judas had bought a field with the money he received for his
- 5:20treachery, falling head first. There his body split open,
- 5:25spilling out all his intestines. The news of his death spread to
- 5:29all the people of Jerusalem, and they gave the place the Aramaic
- 5:33name Akeldama, which means field of blood.
- 5:38Peter continued. This was written in the book of
- 5:41Psalms where it says let his home become desolate with no one
- 5:45living in it. It also says let someone else
- 5:49take his position. So now we must choose a
- 5:53replacement for Judas from among the men who were with us the
- 5:56entire time we were travelling with the Lord Jesus, from the
- 6:00time he was baptised by John until the day he was taken from
- 6:04us. Whoever is chosen will join us
- 6:07as a witness of Jesus resurrection.
- 6:10So they nominated two men Joseph called Barsabbas, also known as
- 6:14Justice and Matthias. Then they all prayed, O Lord,
- 6:20you know every heart. Show us which of these men you
- 6:24have chosen as an apostle to replace Judas in this ministry,
- 6:28for he has deserted us and gone where he belongs.
- 6:32They cast lots and Matthias was selected to become an apostle
- 6:37with the other 11. Our Lord, we see the passion in
- 6:51your disciples. We see how the mission that you
- 6:55had just given them was burning within them, sending them
- 6:58forward to go and do the work that you had set apart for them.
- 7:04And Lord, here we are, so many years down the track, but still
- 7:09here living our lives in this broken, fallen world to share
- 7:14your love and your hope. Those that we encounter.
- 7:20Our Lord, I pray that just like those first disciples had this
- 7:23mission burning in their hearts, Lord, that today you would
- 7:27reignite this passion in us, that we would just long to share
- 7:32your hope with the people in our lives.
- 7:36So that as they encounter us and the joy in our hearts and the
- 7:40hope that permeates all that we do, they would say, what is with
- 7:43you? What gives?
- 7:45With the hope that you just continually hold on to?
- 7:48And that we can say that we believe in grace and we believe
- 7:53in a God who loves us just as we are.
- 7:57Thank you for that grace. Thank you for your love.
- 8:01Thank you that you invite us to be a part of sharing that love
- 8:05in this world so desperately in need of it.
- 8:09We offer ourselves to you that you would fill us with that
- 8:13love, assure us of your love, and share that love in our
- 8:18lives. We ask us in your name, Jesus,
- 8:22Amen.
