- 0:08SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Daily Writer, where we share a lesson each day to help you cultivate the habits for creative success.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: We writers love to create stories.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: And why not?
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: There's something fun about creating a fantasy world, about living in it for a little while and inviting other people to join us there.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: Sometimes, however, those fantasies bleed over into the real world and we find ourselves not quite living in reality.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: Here's one of the fantasies that we love.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: We have this fantasy of sitting down to write and all of a sudden we feel magically inspired with an endless supply of motivation and great ideas.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: Well, the truth is that it doesn't always work that way.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: Most of the time we sit down to write and we don't feel the creative juices flowing immediately.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: Then we just assume that we're not talented or creative.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: On our worst days, we even start to wonder if we should be writing in the first place.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: Stephen King gave us some incredible wisdom when he said this.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: Amateurs sit and wait for inspiration.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: The rest of us just get up and go to work.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: Inspiration doesn't usually come on the front end of writing.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: Instead, we have to sit down and go to work.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: After we've done some writing, the muse typically shows up and gives us some inspiration to keep going.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: In other words, you have to put some gas in the tank before you can go anywhere.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: Inspiration is like the feather from the beginning shot of Forrest Gump.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: It's a fickle thing that's blown in by the wind.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: It comes and goes as it pleases, but you can't rely on this because it's so unpredictable.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: Here's a better way to approach it.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: Here's a better system.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: Commit to doing the work and let inspiration come whenever it will.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: This is what all true professionals do.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: Thanks so much for listening to today's episode.
