- 0:10Speaker 1: JB, you unveiled your list that I always look forward
- 0:13Speaker 1: to of top 40 free agents. Yeah, it's just about
- 0:16Speaker 1: that time, right? The World Series could be over in
- 0:18Speaker 1: a minute and it's time to focus on what's next.
- 0:20Speaker 1: And a lot of that could come in November before
- 0:22Speaker 1: the lockout. So let's run through some highlights here and
- 0:26Speaker 1: just kick off the list for me with a theme.
- 0:27Speaker 1: What's the theme of this free agency that's coming up?
- 0:31Speaker 2: Yeah, very weak class. So get ready for it.
- 0:34Speaker 3: You're not going to have a lot of answers here.
- 0:35Speaker 3: If teams want to get better, Be prepared to be
- 0:38Speaker 3: in the trade market. Not that there's not some really
- 0:40Speaker 3: top free agents led by Tarek Skubal, of course, who
- 0:44Speaker 3: is going to break the record for the most AAV
- 0:46Speaker 3: or most value when it's all said and done. And
- 0:49Speaker 3: certainly a lot of teams are going to be in
- 0:51Speaker 3: on him. Freddy Peralta obviously has brought his value back
- 0:54Speaker 3: with the second half he's had with Tampa Bay. I
- 0:57Speaker 3: think one of the most exciting free agents in this
- 0:59Speaker 3: class is Teriyaki Sato from Japan. He won the triple crown,
- 1:02Speaker 3: the MVP over there. Last time a Japanese player won
- 1:05Speaker 3: the MVP and came to the States, it was a
- 1:07Speaker 3: Deki Matsui. But this is a third baseman that's got
- 1:11Speaker 3: a chance to hit a lot of damage. He does
- 1:12Speaker 3: have a lot of strikeouts in the strike zone and
- 1:15Speaker 3: out of the strike zone. But, I mean, he's a
- 1:18Speaker 3: much better prospect over here than Murakami or Okajama.
- 1:21Speaker 2: So I love what he's going to be able to do.
- 1:24Speaker 3: And then, you know, you've got guys like Erezarena and, say,
- 1:28Speaker 3: a Suzuki, a couple right-handed outfielders. Just because there's such
- 1:32Speaker 3: a shortage of that, Those guys will get overpaid. So, look,
- 1:36Speaker 3: there are some really good free agents, but it is,
- 1:39Speaker 3: relatively speaking, a weak class of free agents.
- 1:43Speaker 4: Jim, how many of these free agents, and I'm mainly
- 1:45Speaker 4: looking at Tarek Skubal, are going to try and get
- 1:47Speaker 4: in under the old CBA, like before December 1st? I
- 1:52Speaker 4: know Boris sometimes likes to play it out, play the
- 1:54Speaker 4: long game, but do you think he'll want to get
- 1:56Speaker 4: Skubal done and signed to the biggest contract he can?
- 1:59Speaker 4: before there's potential changes to the CBA? And is there
- 2:02Speaker 4: anyone else that we should look at that might do
- 2:03Speaker 4: the same?
- 2:05Speaker 3: Yeah, first of all, I do think there's a lot
- 2:07Speaker 3: of agents like Aces and the Boris Corporation that have
- 2:11Speaker 3: led GMs to believe that they want to get deals
- 2:14Speaker 3: done prior to the lockout. I think it's got Boris's case.
- 2:19Speaker 3: You can point to the Corey Seager, Marcus Simeon signings.
- 2:22Speaker 3: You can point to the Max Scherzer signings. That is
- 2:25Speaker 3: what he did the last time we were here. So
- 2:28Speaker 3: I think if he has the opportunity to do that,
- 2:31Speaker 3: I do think you're going to have some big market
- 2:32Speaker 3: clubs that believe that these kind of signings won't be
- 2:36Speaker 3: grandfathered in. And if, in fact, there was a hard cap,
- 2:40Speaker 3: if that were to happen, or a soft cap at
- 2:42Speaker 3: the top, whatever that restricts you, I think teams would
- 2:46Speaker 3: be very careful before they spend too much money, especially
- 2:49Speaker 3: a team like the Mets or the Yankees, teams, Dodgers,
- 2:51Speaker 3: teams that are already high up there in payroll. You know,
- 2:55Speaker 3: they might shy.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Away from it.
- 2:57Speaker 3: I think if you're a small to mid-market club and
- 3:00Speaker 3: you think there's going to be a floor or something
- 3:02Speaker 3: that makes you go up in salary, I think there's
- 3:05Speaker 3: an incentive to try, from a GM's perspective, to try
- 3:08Speaker 3: to do a deal and try to take advantage of
- 3:11Speaker 3: maybe some of the big markets not being able to
- 3:13Speaker 3: bid until after the lockout. So yeah, I think it's
- 3:16Speaker 3: going to be fascinating. Look, I already know I'm not
- 3:19Speaker 3: going to get to go to San Diego for the
- 3:20Speaker 3: winter meetings. And this is the second time the CBA
- 3:23Speaker 3: has fallen on the San Diego winter meetings, which is
- 3:25Speaker 3: absolutely horrible for me because I love going to San Diego.
- 3:28Speaker 3: My sister lives there. I love the LAMP district. But
- 3:32Speaker 3: now I'm going to go to the GM meetings, which
- 3:34Speaker 3: I don't normally go to just because I think we're
- 3:36Speaker 3: going to have a fun month of November. And I
- 3:38Speaker 3: want to have a fun month before I see the
- 3:40Speaker 3: Cowboys beat the Eagles again on Thanksgiving.
- 3:43Speaker 5: And I mean, you run GM territory, so you have
- 3:46Speaker 5: to be at the GM meetings. I feel like it's
- 3:47Speaker 5: the name of the show. Number two on your list
- 3:50Speaker 5: is Freddy Peralta. You glazed over it. You said He's
- 3:54Speaker 5: built his value back up. Is his value back up
- 3:57Speaker 5: to where he wants to be? Obviously, he wants to
- 4:00Speaker 5: win a Cy Young for this season, but it didn't
- 4:02Speaker 5: happen that way. But is it back to where he
- 4:04Speaker 5: should be to really cash in for this one chance
- 4:07Speaker 5: of free agency that he has?
- 4:09Speaker 2: Yeah, I do think so.
- 4:10Speaker 3: I do think so because he's one of two pitchers
- 4:13Speaker 3: that have four consecutive years of 30 starts. So the
- 4:16Speaker 3: durability is there. A year ago, he was top five
- 4:19Speaker 3: in Cy Young. That's how good he was. He goes
- 4:21Speaker 3: to the Mets. arm drops, extension goes away, mechanics, he doesn't,
- 4:27Speaker 3: he goes to Tampa and they fix him. And now
- 4:30Speaker 3: he's pitching exactly like he has the last four years.
- 4:33Speaker 3: So I absolutely think the value is back. Now, you know,
- 4:36Speaker 3: what does that mean? I think it's somewhere between 140
- 4:39Speaker 3: and 160. Carlos Rodon got 160 and he certainly didn't
- 4:43Speaker 3: have the track record of consistency that Peralta has. So
- 4:47Speaker 3: And I think the other issue, too, is, you know,
- 4:49Speaker 3: you want starting pitching in free agency. There's not a
- 4:51Speaker 3: lot of names at the top. You know, to me,
- 4:54Speaker 3: it's three guys. It's Scooble, Peralta and King. I love
- 4:57Speaker 3: all three of them. But because there's only three and
- 5:01Speaker 3: a lot of starting pitchers aren't available in trades, there's
- 5:03Speaker 3: not a lot of starting pitchers that can give you
- 5:05Speaker 3: five or six innings these days.
- 5:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I think he's I think his value is completely back.
- 5:09Speaker 3: I think he's healthy. I think the velo going up
- 5:11Speaker 3: to the ninety seven ninety eight works. Um, the changeup
- 5:15Speaker 3: is still nasty. So yeah, I think his value is
- 5:17Speaker 3: completely back, Eric.
- 5:18Speaker 2: That's my take.
- 5:21Speaker 6: Okay.
- 5:21Speaker 7: Kratzy. Here we are again, man. How many times do
- 5:24Speaker 7: we have to tell people to get the best tickets
- 5:26Speaker 7: in the house?
- 5:27Speaker 2: Where do we got to go? We got to go
- 5:28Speaker 2: to seat geek.
- 5:29Speaker 7: It's been worth it so many times, so many years,
- 5:32Speaker 7: the green light will let you know when it is
- 5:35Speaker 7: time to go in the best seats available. The red
- 5:37Speaker 7: will let you know if it's not the best crafty,
- 5:39Speaker 7: tell them how easy it is. Todd.
- 5:41Speaker 5: I know it's easy. but I'm looking for the deals
- 5:44Speaker 5: because that's what I do. Even so much, like we're
- 5:47Speaker 5: getting such a good deal, I want you to come
- 5:49Speaker 5: across the river and we'll go to a Sixers game together.
- 5:52Speaker 5: I don't know where to sit in the stadium, but
- 5:54Speaker 5: it'll let me know that it's a perfect view because
- 5:57Speaker 5: I'm not a big NBA fan, but I got to
- 6:00Speaker 5: go see the Sixers play with LeBron and the boys.
- 6:03Speaker 7: And of course I have a code for you all.
- 6:04Speaker 7: You can use code TERRITORY10 for 10% off your next
- 6:07Speaker 7: set of tickets at SeatGeek. That's 10% of all tickets
- 6:11Speaker 7: with promo code TERRITORY10. Make sure you click the link
- 6:15Speaker 7: in the description to download the app and have the
- 6:17Speaker 7: code automatically added to your account so you can use
- 6:20Speaker 7: it later.
- 6:22Speaker 4: Hey, Jim, there's some interesting names on this list in
- 6:25Speaker 4: your top 10. First of all, Michael King, and you
- 6:28Speaker 4: have four years, 118. Is he healthy enough? That's always
- 6:33Speaker 4: my question with Michael King. But then I look at
- 6:35Speaker 4: Jake Bowers, Jazz Chisholm, Have they done enough to warrant
- 6:40Speaker 4: big contracts? Because Jake Bowers really was a journeyman. And
- 6:44Speaker 4: then this year, boom, he hits 26 homers, right? And
- 6:47Speaker 4: then Jazz Chisholm is up and down and up and down.
- 6:49Speaker 4: And then some people question, you know, does he play
- 6:53Speaker 4: hard sometimes? You hear those. Is he fully engaged? So
- 6:56Speaker 4: those are the two guys I really want to focus on.
- 6:58Speaker 4: Are those two names up there because, A, there's just
- 7:01Speaker 4: not that many guys in this free agent class? Or
- 7:04Speaker 4: are they deserving of top of the food chain money
- 7:08Speaker 4: as a free agent?
- 7:09Speaker 3: It's a weak free agent class. I mean, that's the answer,
- 7:12Speaker 3: number one. Number two is Jerry Reinsdorf always said it
- 7:16Speaker 3: only takes one team to sign a player. In the
- 7:19Speaker 3: case of Jazz Chisholm, you know, I think there's going
- 7:22Speaker 3: to be a second division team that probably overpays them
- 7:24Speaker 3: and gives them too many years and dollars because that's
- 7:26Speaker 3: the only way they're going to get a player. Perhaps
- 7:28Speaker 3: a team like the Angels who are going to have
- 7:30Speaker 3: a hard time recruiting players just because they're not close
- 7:33Speaker 3: to winning. A team like that might make an offer that,
- 7:36Speaker 3: you know, that you know, gets jazzed. I think in
- 7:39Speaker 3: the case of Jake Bowers, it's kind of a fascinating
- 7:41Speaker 3: case here because to your point, this is the first
- 7:44Speaker 3: time in his career he's ever had 500 plate appearances.
- 7:47Speaker 3: He's never been an everyday player and he had a
- 7:50Speaker 3: really good year. So how much can you trust that
- 7:52Speaker 3: one year, right? Then he gets into the postseason and
- 7:55Speaker 3: he hits a couple of really big home runs. And
- 7:57Speaker 3: then you get to talk to him and you meet
- 7:59Speaker 3: him and he does have that makeup and character, right?
- 8:02Speaker 3: I mean, there's a reason he's going to be on
- 8:03Speaker 3: the World Championship Club hitting at the top of that lineup.
- 8:06Speaker 3: in the two spot or the four spot or wherever
- 8:08Speaker 3: he has been. He's been good defensively at first base
- 8:11Speaker 3: as well. And there's a lot of teams that need
- 8:13Speaker 3: help at first base, like the New York Mets. And
- 8:16Speaker 3: so I kind of feel like, you know, when I
- 8:18Speaker 3: see the Jorge Polanco's getting paid with his injury history,
- 8:22Speaker 3: do I think someone's out there going to give Jake
- 8:24Speaker 3: Bowers a nice contract, even though it's really only one
- 8:28Speaker 3: year of.
- 8:29Speaker 2: History of success at this level?
- 8:31Speaker 3: Yeah, I think so. I think there's enough need at
- 8:33Speaker 3: first base. And I think His makeup and character is
- 8:36Speaker 3: one I would bet on. I think what we saw
- 8:39Speaker 3: this year, he could probably do for the next two
- 8:41Speaker 3: or three years. So I think he'll do just fine.
- 8:43Speaker 3: Chisholm's a more complicated issue, as you know. Like, you know,
- 8:47Speaker 3: I don't even know what to do with him sometimes.
- 8:49Speaker 3: You know, I love the talent. You know, he still
- 8:51Speaker 3: ends up with, what, 15, 20 homers, 40 steals. The
- 8:55Speaker 3: metrics like him defensively, and yet you're in a playoff
- 8:57Speaker 3: game and he tries to turn some double play he shouldn't,
- 9:00Speaker 3: and then he tries to defend it after the game.
- 9:02Speaker 3: And then he walks into Jimmy Fallon with the dark
- 9:04Speaker 3: sunglasses talking about grandma. And I'm like, jazz, really what stop?
- 9:07Speaker 3: You know, I remember, I remember when he went into
- 9:09Speaker 3: Marlin spring training as a, as a rookie and he
- 9:12Speaker 3: parked in Derek, Derek Jeter spot. And I said, you know,
- 9:16Speaker 3: how can you, why would you park in Derek Jeter spot,
- 9:18Speaker 3: the owner of the team? And he said, Oh, he's
- 9:20Speaker 3: not going to be here today. I don't think like
- 9:22Speaker 3: he just, it's just not always there, but raw talents there.
- 9:26Speaker 3: But it's, it's hard for a contending team. I think
- 9:28Speaker 3: to want to, pay him long-term unless he takes a
- 9:31Speaker 3: short-term deal and try to prove it again. But I
- 9:34Speaker 3: do think you're going to have second division teams that
- 9:35Speaker 3: will make a run at him just because there's not
- 9:37Speaker 3: a lot of guys that can hit 20 and steal 40.
- 9:40Speaker 5: When you have a weaker free agent class, I can
- 9:42Speaker 5: look at that top 10 and go, this is a
- 9:45Speaker 5: GM's dream. Surplus value. Where in that top 10 is
- 9:50Speaker 5: the most surplus value for a team who's willing to
- 9:53Speaker 5: strike early and take advantage of a weaker class, but
- 9:58Speaker 5: being able to get into that top 10 of free agents.
- 10:00Speaker 2: I mean, I like Adrian Morhan.
- 10:01Speaker 3: I think I had an 11 on my list and
- 10:03Speaker 3: not quite the top 10, but I think Morhan's one
- 10:06Speaker 3: of the best left-handed setup guys. And as long as
- 10:08Speaker 3: he's healthy, I think he's a game changer. I would
- 10:11Speaker 3: take a chance on Clay Holmes with that bowling ball.
- 10:14Speaker 3: I think he proved that he can start, but he
- 10:15Speaker 3: can also relieve. And in this day and age, you know,
- 10:17Speaker 3: he's a perfect pitcher the way managers handle pitching staff.
- 10:20Speaker 3: So I think those are a couple of arms. David Bednar,
- 10:23Speaker 3: the closer of the Yankees. It's always nice to have
- 10:26Speaker 3: a guy that can lock down the ninth inning when
- 10:27Speaker 3: you have a lead. I mean, most of the teams
- 10:29Speaker 3: we cover at the end of the season always have
- 10:32Speaker 3: that as well. So I guess those are three of
- 10:34Speaker 3: the guys that I would look at.
- 10:37Speaker 4: Jim, I got to ask the question. You brought up Morihone.
- 10:39Speaker 4: And one thing I worry about with Morihone is.
- 10:42Speaker 8: Did the Padres just wear him out? Did they wear
- 10:44Speaker 8: him out?
- 10:44Speaker 4: I mean, he was throwing every game two innings at
- 10:47Speaker 4: a time, and you saw it pop up in the playoffs.
- 10:50Speaker 8: Oh, man, my shoulder's a little barky here, guys. I
- 10:52Speaker 8: can't pitch when you need me.
- 10:54Speaker 4: So does that worry you as a GM that the
- 10:56Speaker 4: team that they came from might have worn.
- 10:59Speaker 8: A guy out?
- 11:00Speaker 2: Petrifies me, sure, with relievers, based on the history of relievers. Yeah,
- 11:04Speaker 2: petrifies me.
- 11:04Speaker 8: I mean, Mason Miller, too, I think.
- 11:06Speaker 4: I feel like Mason Miller kind of got that a
- 11:07Speaker 4: little bit this year, too, from the Padres.
- 11:10Speaker 2: Yeah, and I mean, no doubt. I mean, you know,
- 11:13Speaker 2: it's high risk. High risk, good reward. That's it.
- 11:16Speaker 3: I mean, I worry about Aaron Ashby, and I love
- 11:18Speaker 3: watching Ashby. I mean, I would start Ashby, and I
- 11:21Speaker 3: tried to bring that up to Murph. I said, what
- 11:23Speaker 3: about starting him next year? You know, putting him and
- 11:26Speaker 3: Gasser in the rotation with Miz and Henderson. I mean,
- 11:28Speaker 3: that's what I would do with him. And he said, nope,
- 11:30Speaker 3: we're going to leave him in the bullpen just where
- 11:32Speaker 3: he is. But yeah, to your point, pitchers blow out.
- 11:36Speaker 3: I mean, how many closers actually you know, live those eight, nine,
- 11:40Speaker 3: 10 successful years. I mean, there's Mariano Rivera was one,
- 11:43Speaker 3: Trevor Hoffman, Kimbrell had a good run, but yeah, the
- 11:47Speaker 3: way they get used, yeah, there's no doubt it's always
- 11:50Speaker 3: an injury risk. And I think the important thing today
- 11:53Speaker 3: is you're going to sign one of these pictures like Morahan,
- 11:55Speaker 3: just make sure you've done an MRI on the elbow,
- 11:58Speaker 3: on the shoulder before you give them the money and
- 12:00Speaker 3: make sure you've got all the tests so that your
- 12:03Speaker 3: medical people can tell you what the risk and the
- 12:05Speaker 3: risk is not. At the time you sign them. Not
- 12:08Speaker 3: that that's perfect because it's not, but you'll be surprised
- 12:11Speaker 3: how many teams don't do their due diligence. Don't check
- 12:15Speaker 3: sometimes as thorough as that. And the guy ends up
- 12:18Speaker 3: blowing out. So it's a great point that you made
- 12:20Speaker 3: and I'm with you.
- 12:21Speaker 6: Crazy.
- 12:21Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 12:22Speaker 1: They're only throwing tens of millions of dollars around. You
- 12:24Speaker 1: would think a little bit of extra homework is worth it, but.
- 12:27Speaker 1: Lots to talk about once we hit the end of
- 12:29Speaker 1: this World Series.
- 12:30Speaker 6: Have fun.
- 12:30Speaker 1: Enjoy the rest of it. It could be short, JB,
- 12:33Speaker 1: but have fun out there in Tampa Bay.
- 12:34Speaker 8: Say hi to me, Jim. At least wave. At least wave.
- 12:36Speaker 2: Yes, I'll be there.
- 12:37Speaker 3: In fact, I'm interviewing Rob Manford this afternoon, so I'm
- 12:41Speaker 3: pretty interested to kind of see how that goes.
- 12:43Speaker 2: Any questions you guys want me to ask him?
- 12:46Speaker 6: Well, I know what he's going to say. I mean,
- 12:48Speaker 6: we'd love to have him.
- 12:49Speaker 8: Ask him when he's going to text me back. That's
- 12:51Speaker 8: all I really want to know.
- 12:52Speaker 2: When is he going to text me back? That'll be
- 12:54Speaker 2: my lead question.
- 12:56Speaker 5: That was your one question?
- 12:58Speaker 8: That was your one question, Jim.
- 12:59Speaker 2: Yeah, I get the one. That's it. How come you
- 13:02Speaker 2: don't text AJ back?
- 13:03Speaker 3: Come on.
- 13:04Speaker 1: My real question, JB, would of course be what he
- 13:09Speaker 1: thinks of this World Series and just let him go, right?
- 13:13Speaker 6: In relation to what he's been talking about. That's it.
- 13:16Speaker 1: I just want to hear that part and let him riff,
- 13:18Speaker 1: but hopefully it's... And I know that we're going to
- 13:21Speaker 1: get into this for a long time in the offseason
- 13:23Speaker 1: and it's not just one World Series to decide how
- 13:24Speaker 1: everyone feels, but Just what does this World Series.
- 13:28Speaker 6: Mean to him? I think that's important to ask, right?
- 13:30Speaker 3: I'm going to be asking that, and I'm going to
- 13:33Speaker 3: also be asking the question is the way we're training
- 13:35Speaker 3: players in high school, college, the minor leagues, and preparing
- 13:38Speaker 3: them for earlier success than ever before, doesn't that play
- 13:42Speaker 3: into the success we're having of small market teams, especially
- 13:46Speaker 3: this year?
- 13:46Speaker 2: So we'll get into it with him, and it should
- 13:48Speaker 2: be interesting.
- 13:50Speaker 3: I'm on the SiriusXM pregame show, 5 to 8 Eastern,
- 13:53Speaker 3: if any of our listeners viewers want to listen to that.
- 13:56Speaker 1: I'd appreciate it yeah 100 um ft fam make sure
- 14:00Speaker 1: you listen to that live rob manfred interview coming up
- 14:02Speaker 1: because we can't get him on so jb can on
- 14:05Speaker 1: his show appreciate you jb have fun with that.
- 14:08Speaker 2: Thanks guys all right thank you jake see you.
- 14:11Speaker 1: And of course gm territory is running and it will
- 14:15Speaker 1: get really hot in the off season two with the
- 14:18Speaker 1: Reagency topic, eventually lockout topic as well. So make sure
- 14:21Speaker 1: you check that out, QR code, or just type in
- 14:23Speaker 1: GM territory wherever you get your YouTube or podcasts. Hey,
- 14:28Speaker 1: a couple things. So first off, do we have this
- 14:31Speaker 1: from Jared Banner, who went with the Orioles?
- 14:35Speaker 6: He said he had a role. He wasn't. There it is.
- 14:38Speaker 1: Andy Koska, who covers the team, when they had the
- 14:41Speaker 1: intro press conference, Banner said he wasn't necessarily looking to leave.
- 14:44Speaker 1: But upon meeting with Orioles execs, he was convinced. added
- 14:48Speaker 1: quote in baseball circles which is a long way from
- 14:50Speaker 1: twitter we know mike elias is one of the most
- 14:53Speaker 1: talented executives.
- 14:56Speaker 6: Little shot at the social medias huh.
- 14:59Speaker 4: That's one way to uh get your gm on or
- 15:02Speaker 4: your president baseball ops on your side that's one way
- 15:05Speaker 4: to start off and get and also by the way
- 15:08Speaker 4: that's one way to also get the fans already looking
- 15:10Speaker 4: for you to make a mistake so they can come
- 15:12Speaker 4: after you so it's sometimes better just not to acknowledge it.
- 15:16Speaker 5: On twitter A long way from Twitter or a long
- 15:19Speaker 5: way from lost window of all the prospects. And that
- 15:23Speaker 5: directly reflects what a pobo does.
- 15:27Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 15:28Speaker 1: To be fair here, because that was a funny shot.
- 15:30Speaker 1: Like no matter what you think of Michael Eysen, he
- 15:34Speaker 1: definitely has some talent.
- 15:35Speaker 8: Sure.
- 15:35Speaker 1: He's a GM, pobo, whatever. He's had 10 years there.
- 15:39Speaker 1: They really haven't had much success. So that has nothing
- 15:42Speaker 1: to do with social media.
- 15:45Speaker 8: That's a good way to make your boss happy. Good
- 15:49Speaker 8: way to make your boss happy. This ain't social media.
- 15:51Speaker 8: Take shots at their critics.
- 15:53Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 15:54Speaker 8: Take your shot. Take shots at your credit, at your
- 15:56Speaker 8: boss's critics, man. And your big boss is like, Oh,
- 15:58Speaker 8: I love this guy. I know defend me till the death.
- 16:01Speaker 5: He's sticking up for me. We got a five-year plan.
- 16:04Speaker 5: Here we go.
- 16:05Speaker 1: Here comes banner with the five-year plan to extend everything.
- 16:08Speaker 1: I mean, just, just from like a very, very neutral
- 16:12Speaker 1: look at things. I think even Mike Elias himself would
- 16:14Speaker 1: say this has been a pretty big failure for a decade.
- 16:18Speaker 1: This team has not put a lot together.
- 16:20Speaker 8: No, he needs five more years.
- 16:21Speaker 4: He just hired a new GM. He just hired a
- 16:24Speaker 4: new GM, Scott. He needs three and a half more
- 16:26Speaker 4: years to five.
- 16:29Speaker 1: So he'll be pushing 15 years running that franchise if we.
- 16:33Speaker 6: Give him another five.
- 16:35Speaker 8: How many playoff wins?
- 16:37Speaker 5: All of them?
- 16:39Speaker 6: As many as I have.
- 16:40Speaker 2: Zero.
- 16:40Speaker 8: Zero. Not a single one.
- 16:54Speaker 6: Hey, shake it up.
- 16:55Speaker 1: The search for a Mariners manager continues. And even actually
- 17:00Speaker 1: while we were doing the show, there was another update.
- 17:02Speaker 1: So I'll give it to you fresh as Adam Jude
- 17:05Speaker 1: and Ryan Divish from the Seattle Times have been on this.
- 17:08Speaker 6: Ken has been on this.
- 17:09Speaker 1: He was reporting some pieces of information the other day,
- 17:12Speaker 1: including Rocco Baldelli. taking himself out of the mix. They
- 17:16Speaker 1: are actually down to two finalists. This is hot off
- 17:18Speaker 1: the presses from Adam Jude. He said it's Espada and
- 17:21Speaker 1: Jason Kanzler. They are both scheduled for in-person interviews. So
- 17:25Speaker 1: they've got interviews over these next couple days, and then
- 17:28Speaker 1: we should have an answer. I would say by the
- 17:30Speaker 1: end of the week at the latest, we are down
- 17:33Speaker 1: to two. AJ, if we're going off social media.
- 17:36Speaker 8: Who's Jason Kanzler?
- 17:38Speaker 5: Fire development guy with the Cubs.
- 17:41Speaker 8: Wait, what? So he obviously never played, right?
- 17:47Speaker 5: Player development coordinator with the Cubs.
- 17:53Speaker 6: Okay.
- 17:54Speaker 8: So I guess they're going different.
- 17:56Speaker 4: That's the complete opposite of the two guys they had
- 17:58Speaker 4: before in Scott Service and Dan Wilson. So if he
- 18:01Speaker 4: never played, then that means he's completely the opposite.
- 18:05Speaker 8: He was a twin. He was a twin in the
- 18:07Speaker 8: minor leagues.
- 18:08Speaker 5: He was a twin. Then he taught public school for
- 18:11Speaker 5: a few years. And he was building his performance training business.
- 18:15Speaker 5: So why don't they just hire the guy from driveline
- 18:19Speaker 5: and call it a day?
- 18:20Speaker 8: And that way then.
- 18:22Speaker 4: They can just say, hey, just do what we tell
- 18:25Speaker 4: you to do from up above and then swing up and.
- 18:27Speaker 8: Swing up and swing up.
- 18:29Speaker 5: I feel like this is Joe Spada's job.
- 18:32Speaker 8: Sorry. I do too. Not to bury the lead.
- 18:35Speaker 5: Nothing against Jason Kanzler because we have to Wikipedia him.
- 18:40Speaker 5: I think the Mariners are at a different spot. If
- 18:43Speaker 5: the job was open last year with the Nats, I
- 18:48Speaker 5: think maybe that's a different conversation. I think the Mariners
- 18:52Speaker 5: having the opportunity to have a manager that managed in
- 18:55Speaker 5: the division, have an opportunity to pounce on the fact
- 19:00Speaker 5: that there's three openings just in your division, you go
- 19:04Speaker 5: and get Espada if he wants to go up to
- 19:08Speaker 5: the Northwest, like I... I just think it's tough. I
- 19:11Speaker 5: think you're comparing apples and oranges when you're comparing these
- 19:15Speaker 5: two guys without knowing Jason Kanzler at all.
- 19:18Speaker 6: Yeah, Kanzler. Here's the thing.
- 19:21Speaker 8: I'm not knocking Kanzler.
- 19:23Speaker 6: Right, right.
- 19:24Speaker 8: I'm not knocking Kanzler at all. I don't know.
- 19:26Speaker 4: I've never heard of him, so I don't know who
- 19:27Speaker 4: he is. I mean, he could be the greatest coach,
- 19:30Speaker 4: teacher of all time. It's just hard, and what we're
- 19:32Speaker 4: seeing now is I feel like it's kind of turning back.
- 19:36Speaker 4: It went away for a little while, and it went
- 19:38Speaker 4: to guys– I mean, Butera, Blake Butera in Washington, fine.
- 19:43Speaker 4: But their pitching wasn't very good. How their bullpen was
- 19:45Speaker 4: run was very questionable. We've talked about this with Bo Showalter.
- 19:49Speaker 4: If you don't have guys who have been around it
- 19:51Speaker 4: and actually managed and done managerial stuff and had to
- 19:54Speaker 4: run bullpens, it takes them a while to catch up.
- 19:57Speaker 4: And look at the two managers that are in the
- 19:59Speaker 4: World Series. Pat Murphy put in his time. College, minor leagues,
- 20:03Speaker 4: bench coach, big league manager. Kevin Cash was under– Terry
- 20:08Speaker 4: Francona forever, and he's been in the head of the
- 20:09Speaker 4: Rays for a long time.
- 20:11Speaker 8: He's made mistakes.
- 20:11Speaker 4: Remember 2020, he took Blake Snell out too early, right?
- 20:14Speaker 4: So he's learned, he's learned, he's learned. These guys are
- 20:16Speaker 4: all learning. When you get a guy fresh out, sorry,
- 20:20Speaker 4: the Mariners are a team that's still supposed to be
- 20:22Speaker 4: able to win right now. So you wanted a guy
- 20:24Speaker 4: you would think you'd go for the experienced guy, and
- 20:27Speaker 4: for me, that would be Joe Espada.
- 20:28Speaker 8: These are truly the last two left.
- 20:30Speaker 3: Why?
- 20:30Speaker 4: Some other guys with managerial experience, I guess Rocco Baldelli
- 20:33Speaker 4: took his name out of it, aren't being considered.
- 20:35Speaker 8: I don't know.
- 20:36Speaker 4: I'm not Jerry DiPoto. Um, but Hey, I just still
- 20:39Speaker 4: think this is, should be Joe Espada. If it's, these
- 20:41Speaker 4: are the last two guys left.
- 20:43Speaker 1: I could not agree with you guys more. And this
- 20:45Speaker 1: is how I'll cap the conversation. The Mariners need to
- 20:48Speaker 1: win now. This isn't the nationals that are on still
- 20:51Speaker 1: an extended plan and they're not really trying much. with
- 20:54Speaker 1: how they're putting their roster together in free agency, right?
- 20:56Speaker 1: Like they've done a nice job the first year of
- 20:58Speaker 1: that group, but the Mariners have a ton of pressure
- 21:02Speaker 1: on them to capitalize with Julio Cal, all of those starters.
- 21:05Speaker 1: We can go on and on very different place, like
- 21:07Speaker 1: to bring a PD guy in at this point and
- 21:10Speaker 1: see if it works for his first time as a manager.
- 21:13Speaker 1: That is way too risky for where they're at as
- 21:15Speaker 1: an organization.
- 21:17Speaker 6: That's my take. I'm with you guys. It's a clean sweep.
- 21:19Speaker 6: A spot is going to get this job in the
- 21:20Speaker 6: next 48 hours.
