- 1:28Speaker 1: hurdle moments she's faced building her personal brand, including having
- 1:32Speaker 1: to leave behind a major fitness project she worked on
- 1:34Speaker 1: with Lais Mills to put her faith in the Swoosh.
- 1:37Speaker 1: Also how an injury brought her to tears inside an
- 1:40Speaker 1: acupuncturist's office, a red flag telling her she needed to
- 1:44Speaker 1: temporarily turn down the intensity of her workouts and just
- 1:47Speaker 1: chill out. She offers beautiful insight on the importance of
- 1:50Speaker 1: supporting others, a snapshot of her training style spoiler alert,

- 2:18Speaker 1: love to see you there. I also find this the
- 2:21Speaker 1: perfect time to conveniently plug episode twenty four with Nieha Gandhi.
- 2:25Speaker 2: She's the COO and editor in chief of Girl Boss.
- 2:28Speaker 1: I got a ton of great feedback on Naha's episode
- 2:31Speaker 1: and her solid actionable career advice from listeners, and that's
- 2:34Speaker 1: always a really fun thing.
- 2:37Speaker 2: I feel like I'm rambling a little bit.
- 2:38Speaker 1: A quick thank you to Ali Feller of the Alli
- 2:41Speaker 1: on the Run show. She had me on her pod
- 2:43Speaker 1: this week and we had a total blast. I am
- 2:46Speaker 1: so humbled by the awesome messages and new followers and
- 2:48Speaker 1: fans of alleys that may be over here listening to
- 2:51Speaker 1: Hurdle for the first time.
- 2:52Speaker 2: So welcome to my little corner of the interwebs.

- 3:00Speaker 1: Hurdle Podcast, shoot me an email Emily at hurdle dot
- 3:04Speaker 1: us to say hi or share a Hurdle moment of
- 3:07Speaker 1: your own.
- 3:08Speaker 2: And with that, let's get to hurdling.
- 3:26Speaker 1: I'm sitting here today with Kirsty god So, she is
- 3:29Speaker 1: a Nike Master trainer. I feel like there's so many
- 3:32Speaker 1: ways I want to describe you, So how would you
- 3:34Speaker 1: describe you?
- 3:36Speaker 3: I always dealt with Nike Mousa traina and then I
- 3:38Speaker 3: say a Pyro Girl and people like wait, wait, wait
- 3:41Speaker 3: what of those two mean?
- 3:42Speaker 2: Like what does that even mean? And I mean, great question.
- 3:46Speaker 3: Nike Mousa traina is it sounds like this kind of
- 3:49Speaker 3: superhero title, but really we just are this squad of
- 3:52Speaker 3: people that are out there trying to elevate the energy
- 3:54Speaker 3: of everyone else around us.
- 3:55Speaker 1: And that's very similar to what Pyro Girls is. So
- 3:58Speaker 1: where did Pyro Girls come from? Is this like a
- 4:01Speaker 1: god So creation or.
- 4:02Speaker 3: Yeah, so it's a god So and Lauren Williams creation.
- 4:05Speaker 3: So that's like anyone that knows Lauren Williams knows she
- 4:08Speaker 3: is such a badass programmer and she's another trainer. Yes,
- 4:11Speaker 3: she's another trainer. And we originally met on a Nike shoot.
- 4:14Speaker 3: She was a model and I was on set as
- 4:16Speaker 3: a trainer, and she'd always be one of my favorite
- 4:19Speaker 3: people in the Nike shoots.
- 4:20Speaker 2: It's like, wow, she just looks so cool all the time.
- 4:23Speaker 2: It's so tough.
- 4:24Speaker 3: And then when we met in real life, I was like, damn,
- 4:27Speaker 3: you're even cooler than I thought. Then we started teaching
- 4:30Speaker 3: together when Project by Equinox opened, and so we'd always
- 4:33Speaker 3: joked about having a class together and just talking about
- 4:36Speaker 3: how it would be like too much sauce and too
- 4:38Speaker 3: much energy, and then so Pyro Girls, the name just
- 4:41Speaker 3: came very naturally to us.
- 4:42Speaker 2: So yeah, that was how that started.
- 4:44Speaker 3: But she's busy being a pyro mom now in Canada,
- 4:46Speaker 3: so keeping the flame going while she's there, and then
- 4:50Speaker 3: we link up when we can.
- 4:52Speaker 1: Uh. I feel like for anyone who lives outside of
- 4:54Speaker 1: New York City, Project by Equinox is a pop up
- 4:56Speaker 1: boutique studio here in in the city where they do
- 5:01Speaker 1: different classes than they offer in like the bigger box
- 5:04Speaker 1: Equinox gyms.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Yes, okay, that's a good way to describe it.
- 5:08Speaker 1: I feel like, Okay, so I'm sitting here with this
- 5:10Speaker 1: trainer extraordinaire. I'm excited to sit down with you today.
- 5:12Speaker 1: I feel like our paths have crossed a ton in
- 5:14Speaker 1: the last few years. And this is like the first
- 5:16Speaker 1: forty five minute dedicated this might be.
- 5:18Speaker 3: The least violating forty five minutes of your time with
- 5:21Speaker 3: me because we have to sit still and there's no
- 5:24Speaker 3: battle ropes and we're not going upside down and no
- 5:26Speaker 3: pull up bus.
- 5:27Speaker 1: So thank god, thank god. So if you can't hear, oh,
- 5:30Speaker 1: you can here. I'm sure Kirsty's not from these parts.
- 5:34Speaker 1: So let's dive into a little bit of backstory. How
- 5:37Speaker 1: long ago did you move here and where from?
- 5:40Speaker 2: So?
- 5:40Speaker 3: I moved to New York about three years ago from
- 5:42Speaker 3: New Zealand, and prior to that, I was coming in
- 5:45Speaker 3: and out of the States all the time for Nike,
- 5:47Speaker 3: and but I was mostly on the West Coast in
- 5:50Speaker 3: Portland and LA.
- 5:51Speaker 2: And I always thought I was going to live in LA.
- 5:54Speaker 2: That was the dream.
- 5:55Speaker 3: And then I got my visa and actually, like it
- 5:58Speaker 3: was only about six weeks I was moving over. I
- 6:00Speaker 3: ended up moving to New York instead because I took
- 6:03Speaker 3: this role to design a gym for Equinox, So I
- 6:05Speaker 3: kind of landed in New York without meaning to be here.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Wouldn't say.
- 6:09Speaker 3: I loved my first year here, and then once I
- 6:12Speaker 3: got that seasoning in now I love it and I
- 6:16Speaker 3: still think, you know, maybe there's a part of me
- 6:17Speaker 3: that will end up living in LA But I always
- 6:19Speaker 3: say that, and then something about New York. It's like
- 6:21Speaker 3: this toxic potion, you know, like this heavy love affair,
- 6:24Speaker 3: and it keeps you here, so you.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Don't just end up working for Nike overnight.
- 6:30Speaker 1: So why don't we backtrack a little bit and talk
- 6:32Speaker 1: about kind of your foundations and getting into this career
- 6:36Speaker 1: in health and fitness, and were you always into fitness
- 6:39Speaker 1: growing up?
- 6:40Speaker 2: What was your deal?
- 6:41Speaker 3: I was always into sport, definitely. I mean, when you
- 6:43Speaker 3: live in New Zealand, there's not much to do other
- 6:45Speaker 3: than be very active. So both my parents were pro golfers,
- 6:49Speaker 3: and my brother's phenomenal at golf, and so I grew up.
- 6:52Speaker 3: I think golf is a very disciplined and patient sport.
- 6:57Speaker 3: I definitely have the discipline. I don't think I had
- 6:59Speaker 3: the patients, and so I prefer to always move fast.
- 7:02Speaker 2: So I was doing motocross and water polo.
- 7:05Speaker 3: And netball, which is kind of our version of basketball
- 7:07Speaker 3: a little different, and always playing a ton of sport.
- 7:11Speaker 3: And then once I finished at high school and transitioned
- 7:13Speaker 3: into university where I was doing a double business degree,
- 7:16Speaker 3: that's when I started really getting into the gym because
- 7:18Speaker 3: you know, everyone moves away to different universities, we didn't
- 7:21Speaker 3: have the same sports teams available. And that was when
- 7:24Speaker 3: I loved the gym. But did I ever think I
- 7:26Speaker 3: wanted to be a trainer? Helder like, absolutely not. And
- 7:29Speaker 3: it wasn't until I actually first tried my first year
- 7:31Speaker 3: of high intensity workout that I was like, whoa. And
- 7:35Speaker 3: that was when it was just wasn't even a term
- 7:37Speaker 3: that was used. It was something kind of held for athletes.
- 7:40Speaker 3: And I was like, man, I don't know if I
- 7:42Speaker 3: absolutely hated that or I loved it like I wanted
- 7:44Speaker 3: to spew. I kind of thought I was dying, but
- 7:46Speaker 3: then I was upharick And what did I involve? I
- 7:50Speaker 3: just I tried it in LA and a lot, just
- 7:53Speaker 3: a lot of burpies and I was using a barbell
- 7:57Speaker 3: and it was really cool. So I was already training
- 8:00Speaker 3: at les Mills the gym, and then so I started
- 8:02Speaker 3: working with them, and that was really how I got
- 8:05Speaker 3: into fitness, which was cool because I was doing it
- 8:07Speaker 3: with my best friend. And then next thing you know,
- 8:10Speaker 3: we were certified in these different programs and we were
- 8:13Speaker 3: teaching fitness DVDs.
- 8:14Speaker 2: Which if you asked us when we're twenty two.
- 8:16Speaker 3: We never would have thought that we were doing that,
- 8:18Speaker 3: especially given like a few months prior we were partying
- 8:21Speaker 3: at Coachella.
- 8:24Speaker 1: I'm just a little lost about how you all of
- 8:26Speaker 1: a sudden like were starring in fitness DVDs like.
- 8:29Speaker 3: So it's funny because it feels like it was such
- 8:32Speaker 3: a seamless transition when I talk about it now, But
- 8:35Speaker 3: I guess at the time, I was working full time
- 8:37Speaker 3: in media. I'd graduated from university with a double degree
- 8:40Speaker 3: in finance and marketing, and then I was still in
- 8:44Speaker 3: my media job whilst like studying these programs with Lesmills
- 8:47Speaker 3: and learning to be a trainer with them, and we
- 8:51Speaker 3: were creating this high intensity program called Grit. So then
- 8:55Speaker 3: obviously the way that they train up all their trainers
- 8:57Speaker 3: around the world. I don't think a lot of people
- 8:59Speaker 3: know that Les Meill's comes from New Zealand. That's the
- 9:02Speaker 3: one with the long body ump and the cow bells.
- 9:05Speaker 2: It's like a heavy stick.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Yes, I see them doing lately on twenty four hour Fitness.
- 9:10Speaker 3: Yes, yes, so they're been a twenty four hour and
- 9:12Speaker 3: gold and stuff like that. But in New Zealand, we
- 9:14Speaker 3: actually have Les Mel's gyms. So the way that all
- 9:18Speaker 3: the trainers are trained around the world is through these
- 9:19Speaker 3: fitness DVDs. So that was part of what my friend
- 9:22Speaker 3: Les Junior and I had to do was film the DVDs,
- 9:25Speaker 3: which was quite funny because if you watch maybe the
- 9:28Speaker 3: first two or three releases, I sound like the terminator,
- 9:31Speaker 3: like I'm so nervous that I have no tone of voice,
- 9:35Speaker 3: and like he's the really happy, bubbly one high fiving everyone.
- 9:39Speaker 2: I'm like, Okay, let's get to work.
- 9:40Speaker 3: Because I'm just like I was just nervous and didn't
- 9:43Speaker 3: really know what I was doing. And I think even
- 9:45Speaker 3: still at the time, my dad was like, wait, so
- 9:47Speaker 3: she got a finance degree and now she's doing fitness DVDs,
- 9:50Speaker 3: Like what's going on?
- 9:51Speaker 1: And I think the best part about this story is
- 9:53Speaker 1: you can't see that Kirsty is like very petite in size,
- 9:58Speaker 1: and so you got this like size powerhouse telling you
- 10:03Speaker 1: to get to it.
- 10:04Speaker 3: Yeah, it was pretty ironic, but we had a lot
- 10:08Speaker 3: of fun and it was cool, and I think it
- 10:10Speaker 3: was the best like growth for me in the sense
- 10:14Speaker 3: of learning how to speak. I mean, I used to
- 10:16Speaker 3: be too scared to call people's houses like just call
- 10:18Speaker 3: the phone like the home line, and then you had
- 10:21Speaker 3: to get up and teach a class in front of people.
- 10:23Speaker 2: I think people are scared to do that every day.
- 10:26Speaker 1: Like sometimes when I am doing business and I'm there's
- 10:30Speaker 1: a lot going on and I get an email and
- 10:31Speaker 1: it's like, what do you think about like ABC and
- 10:33Speaker 1: D and I'm like, do you just have five minutes
- 10:35Speaker 1: for us to hop on?
- 10:36Speaker 2: I just get on the phone, I know, really quick
- 10:38Speaker 2: or people.
- 10:38Speaker 3: I was like, Okay, what's wrong, and You're like no,
- 10:40Speaker 3: it's just like let's have a power well because it's
- 10:42Speaker 3: way easier and so irritates me because tone of voice
- 10:45Speaker 3: is misinterpreted.
- 10:46Speaker 2: It's true.
- 10:47Speaker 3: So I mean that's tone of voice is misinterpreted for
- 10:50Speaker 3: me all the time. With my accent, I mostly called
- 10:52Speaker 3: Christy from Australia, which is probably the fastest way to
- 10:56Speaker 3: piss me off. But I mean, I'll say It'sustralian if
- 11:00Speaker 3: it helps my visa. But so yeah, we spiraled into
- 11:05Speaker 3: this fitness career without really having any idea what we
- 11:10Speaker 3: were creating, in the sense that we just wanted people
- 11:14Speaker 3: to get fitter, faster, and that's what lasml's are really
- 11:17Speaker 3: great at. They put so much science into their programming.
- 11:20Speaker 3: So then that we came to the first time I
- 11:23Speaker 3: ever came to New York was with Grit and we
- 11:25Speaker 3: were teaching it in New Jersey and that was really cool.
- 11:30Speaker 3: And first impressions of New York City, well, we came
- 11:33Speaker 3: and it was the start of December, so it was
- 11:36Speaker 3: very crisp, and you definitely don't need to own that
- 11:39Speaker 3: level of jacket in New Zealand, so that was interesting
- 11:42Speaker 3: for us, but it was cool. I was like, wow,
- 11:46Speaker 3: I kind of felt very startled. I felt like a
- 11:47Speaker 3: little sheep in the city. And I remember going home
- 11:52Speaker 3: to New Zealand and just being like I was starstruck.
- 11:56Speaker 2: I guess about what New York was and the energy there.
- 11:59Speaker 3: And thankfully my best friend Georgia of Howler, who's also
- 12:03Speaker 3: a Kiwi, she lives here and she's lived here for
- 12:05Speaker 3: years with modelings, so there was many more trips for
- 12:08Speaker 3: me back to New York to stay with her and
- 12:10Speaker 3: we'd run like it was my favorite thing. We'd do
- 12:12Speaker 3: this thing called Workout Week and we'd go to like
- 12:14Speaker 3: two or three classes a day and just trying out
- 12:16Speaker 3: all the different workouts in New York and that was
- 12:18Speaker 3: always so fun.
- 12:20Speaker 2: That sounds like some people's version of personal health.
- 12:23Speaker 3: I know, I know, and it's funny because like we're
- 12:25Speaker 3: still that's still our most joyous thing that we can do.
- 12:29Speaker 3: Now we just are obsessed with it. It's so funny too,
- 12:32Speaker 3: how you. I mean, I definitely used to complain a
- 12:35Speaker 3: lot the first year that I lived here. I'd be like,
- 12:37Speaker 3: it's cold, it's hard, like you're on the subway with
- 12:39Speaker 3: your groceries, like all these things. And then you get
- 12:42Speaker 3: to the point where you just almost find this new
- 12:45Speaker 3: level of resilience and you create those thick layers of
- 12:48Speaker 3: skin and you're just like, okay, cool, Yeah it's hard,
- 12:51Speaker 3: let's do it like it's cool. It becomes this, but
- 12:54Speaker 3: then your tolerance for other people complaining becomes very low.
- 12:58Speaker 2: I totally hear that.
- 12:59Speaker 1: I was driving back into the city after going to
- 13:01Speaker 1: a wedding this past weekend, and the car with my
- 13:04Speaker 1: girlfriend who lives in Connecticut, and I see the skyline
- 13:06Speaker 1: and I'm like, oh, I love New York.
- 13:07Speaker 2: She goes see like I hear you, and like it's
- 13:10Speaker 2: nice to visit. But I get in there and it's
- 13:12Speaker 2: like hectic and it's dirty and all these things. I'm like,
- 13:16Speaker 2: but it's home.
- 13:17Speaker 3: It's home, And like, I mean, it's funny because like,
- 13:20Speaker 3: I definitely have a beautiful view from the window of
- 13:22Speaker 3: my apartment, and I always joke I'm like, oh, I'm paying.
- 13:26Speaker 2: For that view.
- 13:26Speaker 3: But like, I mean, you can't help it be excited
- 13:30Speaker 3: when you get up in New York and there's a
- 13:31Speaker 3: fire under your ass every day, because yeah, it's expensive
- 13:33Speaker 3: to live here. Yeah so, and you have to be
- 13:36Speaker 3: on top of your shit, like you're not here to coast.
- 13:39Speaker 3: But I think I really love the energy and I
- 13:41Speaker 3: love the people because they'll tell you too. They'll tell
- 13:44Speaker 3: us you straight like if you have a shit idea,
- 13:46Speaker 3: they can be like, oh, that's a shit idea, but
- 13:49Speaker 3: what about if you did this?
- 13:50Speaker 2: And I don't think there's.
- 13:51Speaker 3: A lot of other cities that really people are out
- 13:53Speaker 3: there to help as much as that, And you accidently
- 13:56Speaker 3: straight forward create a business. Every other day you're like, oh, whoops,
- 13:59Speaker 3: I didn't mean to do that.
- 14:02Speaker 2: But now we're on it. But now we're making protein.
- 14:04Speaker 3: Founders and we're doing Pirro girls, and we're doing this,
- 14:06Speaker 3: and we're doing this, and we're doing this.
- 14:08Speaker 1: Oh God, tell me a little bit Okay, So you're
- 14:10Speaker 1: in Los Angeles for the most part, with a few
- 14:13Speaker 1: stinds to and from New York City, and then what happens?
- 14:17Speaker 3: So I start traveling, Oh, I start working with Nike
- 14:22Speaker 3: obviously from New Zealand. They found me in New Zealand.
- 14:24Speaker 3: So first of all I was looking after New Zealand
- 14:25Speaker 3: and Australia. And then I maybe after I'd been with
- 14:30Speaker 3: them a year, I became a master trainer and that
- 14:32Speaker 3: was still very new into the stages of them having
- 14:35Speaker 3: master trainers, and back then people didn't really know what
- 14:37Speaker 3: it meant.
- 14:38Speaker 2: I didn't know what it meant.
- 14:39Speaker 3: How did Nike first contact you? They I was teaching
- 14:43Speaker 3: at the gym in New Zealand. Like as a side,
- 14:46Speaker 3: I had three jobs. I was teaching at the gym,
- 14:48Speaker 3: I was working in media, and I was doing the
- 14:50Speaker 3: fitness CVDS. And they'd heard of me teaching in the
- 14:54Speaker 3: gym and they were looking for a trainer in that area.
- 14:56Speaker 3: So they came and sort of sort out my class
- 14:59Speaker 3: and the and my first job I had to do
- 15:01Speaker 3: was go for a five k run in Sydney and
- 15:03Speaker 3: I was like, great, I'm going to ruin this before
- 15:05Speaker 3: it starts. I hate running, and it turned out that
- 15:09Speaker 3: it went fine. I can't actually run very well. I
- 15:12Speaker 3: just have metal pins all through one knee, and so yeah,
- 15:16Speaker 3: then we started working together and I remember like, I mean,
- 15:20Speaker 3: this is New Zealand, right, so it's not a huge
- 15:22Speaker 3: market New Zealand or Australia.
- 15:24Speaker 2: We were teaching workouts outside.
- 15:26Speaker 3: We had no mic, we had no equipment, we were
- 15:29Speaker 3: fake jump roping.
- 15:30Speaker 2: But the girls were so into it.
- 15:31Speaker 3: So we had to keep scheduling more and more and
- 15:33Speaker 3: more Nike Training club workouts because it was so popular.
- 15:36Speaker 3: And then so we Nike just we started getting more
- 15:40Speaker 3: work in Australia and New Zealand. So I started to
- 15:42Speaker 3: fly back and forth between Auckland and Sydney quite a bit.
- 15:45Speaker 3: And then Trey Maria Sharapova during the Australian Open in
- 15:51Speaker 3: two thousand and fourteen, I think it would have been.
- 15:55Speaker 2: And that was that was a maze. That was probably
- 15:58Speaker 2: the biggest.
- 15:59Speaker 3: I think my boyfriend at the time he said, I
- 16:00Speaker 3: didn't stop smiling for like three days, like I was
- 16:02Speaker 3: just like, oh my gosh, like I couldn't believe it.
- 16:05Speaker 3: And she was so cool and she was tough, like
- 16:09Speaker 3: she was really out there making sure that the girls
- 16:11Speaker 3: worked and I I've always had such respect for her
- 16:15Speaker 3: if you've read her book, like her story is amazing.
- 16:18Speaker 2: So after I had that moment.
- 16:19Speaker 3: Then the global team really started to take more notice
- 16:21Speaker 3: and I got to go to Portland that year, and
- 16:23Speaker 3: going to campus was one of my biggest dreams and
- 16:26Speaker 3: so that was really cool, and this is the Nike
- 16:29Speaker 3: the Nike campus, and then it was really also meeting
- 16:33Speaker 3: a lot of the other trainers too, and I was
- 16:34Speaker 3: very I was definitely the youngest out of the bunch,
- 16:37Speaker 3: and so it was kind of intimidating coming in and
- 16:40Speaker 3: you're young and you're small, but so I think people
- 16:42Speaker 3: kind of maybe don't expect they don't know what to
- 16:46Speaker 3: expect from you, right, So that's why I always say
- 16:48Speaker 3: to people, I'm like, yeah, cool, be a surprise.
- 16:50Speaker 2: It's really nice to surprise people.
- 16:52Speaker 3: So I think they were pleasantly surprised when we did
- 16:54Speaker 3: some of the fitness tests and they're like, oh, this
- 16:56Speaker 3: kid's fit.
- 16:58Speaker 2: So yeah.
- 17:00Speaker 3: Forward another year and a bit from there, I got
- 17:03Speaker 3: my first workout on the Nike app and.
- 17:07Speaker 2: I was in the Nike Woman campaign.
- 17:09Speaker 3: That was when I became one of the faces of
- 17:10Speaker 3: Nike women, which was the first time that he was
- 17:12Speaker 3: six of their female master trainers in a big campaign,
- 17:15Speaker 3: and that was a.
- 17:15Speaker 2: Huge moment for me.
- 17:16Speaker 3: But simultaneously it was the moment where my relationship fell
- 17:20Speaker 3: apart with Les Mills, because I'd had to make a
- 17:21Speaker 3: choice of staying with Nike or going with Reebok, who
- 17:25Speaker 3: they'd partnered with for five years. And it was a
- 17:28Speaker 3: really pivotal moment for me because Grit was such a
- 17:31Speaker 3: huge part of my heart and who I was, and
- 17:33Speaker 3: I loved it so much. But Nike had been my
- 17:36Speaker 3: dream since I was three years old, and I always
- 17:38Speaker 3: thought that I'd have to work in an office for them,
- 17:40Speaker 3: because when you're little, you know, even growing up through school,
- 17:43Speaker 3: you don't think there's such job as a master trainer,
- 17:46Speaker 3: and you didn't even think you're going to be a trainer.
- 17:49Speaker 3: So I just couldn't lose this hope and this dream
- 17:52Speaker 3: of like what might happen with Nike. And I remember
- 17:54Speaker 3: when I was trying to make the decision, people were
- 17:56Speaker 3: saying me, They're like, this is the worst decision you're
- 17:58Speaker 3: going to make because.
- 17:59Speaker 2: There's no guarantee with Nike.
- 18:01Speaker 3: You haven't even done anything that major with them, and
- 18:04Speaker 3: I was like, yeah, but I just owe it to
- 18:07Speaker 3: myself to know what happens, and I just wouldn't forgive
- 18:10Speaker 3: myself if I just had that wonder there all the time.
- 18:13Speaker 3: So I was really proud of myself that I stuck
- 18:15Speaker 3: to it, and I think without me knowing, it made
- 18:17Speaker 3: me work even harder, even though there was the initial
- 18:20Speaker 3: heartbreak of having a like, I didn't leave grit straight away.
- 18:24Speaker 3: I was still working a lot behind the scenes, but
- 18:26Speaker 3: it's really hard when something's yours to hand it over.
- 18:28Speaker 3: But I think that taught me a lot too about
- 18:30Speaker 3: how to be a support person and how to celebrate
- 18:33Speaker 3: other people, because it's not always about you. You want
- 18:37Speaker 3: to be a star in a constellation of stars. You
- 18:39Speaker 3: don't want to be a star on your own. So
- 18:41Speaker 3: if you can't celebrate other people, you need to really
- 18:44Speaker 3: look in the mirror and figure out why, because it's
- 18:47Speaker 3: something kind of dark in you if you can't be
- 18:49Speaker 3: excited for other people and you can't support them.
- 18:51Speaker 2: So I totally totally hear that.
- 18:54Speaker 1: I feel like, especially I'm on your squad in the
- 18:57Speaker 1: mindset that like, I love to show up and be
- 18:59Speaker 1: someone's cheerly I think everything. There's no better feeling just
- 19:02Speaker 1: to be in someone's gang and be in their corner,
- 19:05Speaker 1: and I want to show up to your event and
- 19:06Speaker 1: I can't wait to brag about you to everyone.
- 19:09Speaker 2: And then when when you take a step back and
- 19:11Speaker 2: you realize.
- 19:12Speaker 1: That one moment or another that you have some feeling
- 19:14Speaker 1: of resentment or confusion or confliction about seeing someone else's success,
- 19:18Speaker 1: Like celebrating someone else isn't going to dule what you're doing.
- 19:21Speaker 3: Exactly because you're running completely different races. This is where
- 19:25Speaker 3: comparison is tricky, because people start to run someone else's
- 19:28Speaker 3: race and then they end up somewhere they were never
- 19:30Speaker 3: even meant to be.
- 19:31Speaker 2: I'm like, don't waste your time trying to reroute.
- 19:33Speaker 3: Get back to your own vision and your own goals,
- 19:35Speaker 3: because it's irrelevant. Like me and my friends, Like this
- 19:38Speaker 3: is why I'm so unapologetically obsessed with my friends. We
- 19:41Speaker 3: are so happy for each other all the time. There's
- 19:43Speaker 3: no competition, like it's just it's exciting and it's and
- 19:48Speaker 3: it elevates like the vibrational frequency of everyone when that's
- 19:52Speaker 3: the you know, yeah, that's it's an investment from all
- 19:55Speaker 3: of you collectively, like one person's thriving. Everyone's thriving. Yeah,
- 19:58Speaker 3: and it's really motivating. But that was where I really learned. Okay,
- 20:03Speaker 3: I still want this program to be the best, even
- 20:05Speaker 3: though I'm not being involved with it. So when I'm
- 20:07Speaker 3: helping these other people put it together and present it,
- 20:11Speaker 3: how can I help them be.
- 20:12Speaker 2: The best to present that?
- 20:14Speaker 3: And that's also what I try and do with Nike,
- 20:16Speaker 3: because you know, we would go around the world doing
- 20:17Speaker 3: these train the trainers, and you know, it's always it's
- 20:20Speaker 3: not about being like, okay, cool, I want you to
- 20:22Speaker 3: be ninety percent good, but I don't want you to
- 20:24Speaker 3: be as good as me or as good as Joe
- 20:26Speaker 3: or whatever. No, we want everyone to be great. So
- 20:30Speaker 3: I mean, I've always said, like I want to earn
- 20:33Speaker 3: everything that I get. I don't want to get it.
- 20:35Speaker 3: I don't even want to get it if it's easy
- 20:38Speaker 3: like I want it. I want to have to be great.
- 20:40Speaker 2: To get it. Yeah, even if that means not getting
- 20:43Speaker 2: some of the stuff.
- 20:44Speaker 3: And I always say to people too, when people are
- 20:46Speaker 3: like pissed off and mad and like, oh I didn't
- 20:48Speaker 3: get this and so and so should have gone like
- 20:51Speaker 3: they got it, And I'm da da da da and
- 20:52Speaker 3: I'm like, why are you even getting lost in that story?
- 20:55Speaker 3: I'm like, who even cares? Like all that energy you're
- 20:58Speaker 3: putting into this tantrum could be going back into your work,
- 21:01Speaker 3: relook at your process and figure out why you didn't
- 21:05Speaker 3: get it maybe, And sometimes it's actually just like the
- 21:08Speaker 3: job isn't meant.
- 21:09Speaker 2: For you, right right?
- 21:10Speaker 1: And I mean it's that whole idea of looking at
- 21:13Speaker 1: failure not as a failure, but as a stepping zone
- 21:15Speaker 1: in your path. And so it's like when something goes wrong,
- 21:19Speaker 1: instead of sitting there and dwelling on the fact that
- 21:20Speaker 1: it went wrong or not as planned, you look at
- 21:23Speaker 1: what happened and it's like, Okay, how can I learn
- 21:26Speaker 1: from this situation?
- 21:27Speaker 3: Yes, well that's why I mean, like Kobe is one
- 21:29Speaker 3: of my favorite athletes, because you know how he would
- 21:31Speaker 3: watch all the tapes of himself and go through every
- 21:33Speaker 3: single thing that was wrong and try and fix it.
- 21:35Speaker 3: And I mean I think that so much of the
- 21:38Speaker 3: time we don't want to look in with and be like, Okay,
- 21:40Speaker 3: what did I do that didn't get me to hear?
- 21:43Speaker 2: And like owning our shit.
- 21:45Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean I even think about that, not just
- 21:48Speaker 1: in business, but like in relationship.
- 21:50Speaker 2: Relationships, like put your pride aside.
- 21:52Speaker 3: Yeah we hate we live once and I hate the
- 21:56Speaker 3: same yolo, but like we actually live once.
- 21:59Speaker 2: That's a fact.
- 22:00Speaker 3: If you can't invest in yourself and invest in your
- 22:02Speaker 3: life and invest in the people in your life. And
- 22:04Speaker 3: when I say invest, that's you know, wins and losses,
- 22:08Speaker 3: and sometimes you have to say, yeah, I'm responsible for
- 22:10Speaker 3: that loss and I'm sorry.
- 22:13Speaker 2: And I learned and just learning to communicate.
- 22:16Speaker 3: I think for a lot of the time, I definitely
- 22:19Speaker 3: started to travel a lot with Nike, and I think
- 22:24Speaker 3: for a moment, it stopped me being as good of
- 22:26Speaker 3: a communicator because I was alone a lot of the time,
- 22:29Speaker 3: and I was traveling around the world, like flying from
- 22:31Speaker 3: New Zealand all the time. There was one year that
- 22:33Speaker 3: I think I was in New Zealand for maybe a
- 22:34Speaker 3: month and a half and I had a boyfriend who
- 22:37Speaker 3: I loved and we had a cat, and you know,
- 22:39Speaker 3: had all my friends there, and I missed so many moments.
- 22:42Speaker 3: And I definitely noticed that that time away, whilst I
- 22:46Speaker 3: was thriving with work, I stopped communicating as well, and
- 22:50Speaker 3: maybe put up a little bit of a defense wall
- 22:53Speaker 3: and wasn't as good at seeing what I was doing
- 22:57Speaker 3: wrong right to other people once I learned, You know,
- 23:02Speaker 3: that's what That's the beautiful thing about getting older when
- 23:04Speaker 3: you learn and being able to go back to people
- 23:06Speaker 3: and say hey, I'm sorry, right, Like, I don't think
- 23:09Speaker 3: it's ever too late to say I'm sorry.
- 23:10Speaker 2: Yeah, now, I hear you. I totally hear you. I uh.
- 23:14Speaker 1: I think that it takes someone who's willing to put
- 23:17Speaker 1: like some pride or some ego aside, though, And if
- 23:20Speaker 1: you have too much ego, I mean, that's not good
- 23:22Speaker 1: for anybody, no, but it's definitely not good for moving
- 23:24Speaker 1: forward in any relationship.
- 23:25Speaker 2: You have to bans your ego.
- 23:27Speaker 3: I say this people all the time, and that's in work,
- 23:29Speaker 3: in relationships, in a fitness class, like sometimes I'm like, yo,
- 23:32Speaker 3: there is glory in a modification because maybe the advanced
- 23:36Speaker 3: move for you is taking the modification so you actually
- 23:39Speaker 3: get the move, right, Stop being like so ego driven
- 23:42Speaker 3: that you think you have to do the most advanced
- 23:44Speaker 3: thing when you're not doing good technique.
- 23:46Speaker 1: Right, I've got to head to stop really quick and
- 23:48Speaker 1: ask you about the pens on your knees.
- 23:50Speaker 3: Oh well, my brother and I used to do motocross.
- 23:53Speaker 3: We grew up on a farm and we were both
- 23:56Speaker 3: riding up opposite sides of the hill and then saw
- 23:58Speaker 3: each other at the top and dodged the same way,
- 24:02Speaker 3: and so my knee got caught in the aftermath of that.
- 24:05Speaker 2: But here's the kicker.
- 24:08Speaker 3: We didn't want to tell our parents that we had
- 24:10Speaker 3: a crash because we didn't want to get the bike
- 24:12Speaker 3: singing office.
- 24:12Speaker 2: So we're like, let's just not say anything.
- 24:14Speaker 3: I kept playing water polo for like a good another
- 24:16Speaker 3: year on my knee, and so, you know, water polo,
- 24:19Speaker 3: your egg beating all the time. You're just grinding your
- 24:21Speaker 3: knee around and around and around. And my friends at
- 24:23Speaker 3: school nicknamed me Bambi because I would just fall over
- 24:26Speaker 3: at random, like my knee would just collapse underneath me,
- 24:28Speaker 3: and then it was really sore all the time.
- 24:31Speaker 2: But I was such a sporty kid. I was like whatever.
- 24:34Speaker 3: It got to the point I took myself in for
- 24:36Speaker 3: an X ray because I was like, this is weird.
- 24:38Speaker 3: I was fourteen, and the doctor was like this is wild,
- 24:43Speaker 3: Like how were you walking on this leg? Like there's
- 24:45Speaker 3: just bone everywhere, like misplaced, and my meniscus was gone basically,
- 24:50Speaker 3: so how did they see.
- 24:52Speaker 1: You when you were fourteen without an adult present, You could.
- 24:55Speaker 2: Just like New Zealand is very chill. We also have
- 24:57Speaker 2: your housecare.
- 24:58Speaker 3: Yeah, and because my mom was and she lived very
- 25:01Speaker 3: far in the country, and so you could just go
- 25:04Speaker 3: to the doctor and get next ray and and then
- 25:08Speaker 3: so I had to tell my parents.
- 25:09Speaker 2: I was like, oh shit. I was like, so I
- 25:13Speaker 2: got this X ray on my knee.
- 25:15Speaker 3: And anyway, luckily good health insurance in New Zealand, because
- 25:18Speaker 3: like two weeks later I was having a knee operation
- 25:20Speaker 3: that had me on crutches for four months, which is
- 25:23Speaker 3: not what so they wait until I turned fifteen. The
- 25:25Speaker 3: day after my birthday, I had my operation, and I
- 25:30Speaker 3: was pretty excited because I got to have like three
- 25:32Speaker 3: weeks off school. Maybe one week into it, I was
- 25:35Speaker 3: so bored out of my brain's at home. I was
- 25:37Speaker 3: begging my mom to let me go back to school.
- 25:40Speaker 3: And I couldn't really do any sport, which was really hard.
- 25:44Speaker 3: But that I was like, man, my upper body strength
- 25:46Speaker 3: is like popping on these crutches.
- 25:49Speaker 2: Never got told that my knee wouldn't be able to
- 25:52Speaker 2: move the way I needed a too for water polo,
- 25:53Speaker 2: which was my number one sport I was playing at
- 25:55Speaker 2: the time, so I jumped back in the pool once
- 25:57Speaker 2: I'm cleared off my crutches, only to like end up
- 26:01Speaker 2: in tears because I get it and I realize my
- 26:03Speaker 2: knee doesn't even move that way. You should watch me
- 26:05Speaker 2: do a breaststroke. It is hilarious. It's like, it's just
- 26:08Speaker 2: this dead frog leg out the side. I'm going list
- 26:11Speaker 2: for next time I find you. Well.
- 26:13Speaker 3: I was really sad, and my dad was. My dad
- 26:16Speaker 3: was very calm about it. He's like, you know what,
- 26:18Speaker 3: like you still are allowed to do all these other
- 26:20Speaker 3: things they've said. You can't ski, you shouldn't run much,
- 26:23Speaker 3: and water polo is clearly not happening because you're not
- 26:26Speaker 3: egg beating very well. But I could still play netball.
- 26:30Speaker 3: And he was like, you have to be grateful for
- 26:31Speaker 3: the things you can do. I was like, that's true.
- 26:34Speaker 3: So I just got even more obsessed with my other sports.
- 26:37Speaker 3: And actually the greatest thing about it was I think
- 26:39Speaker 3: that that was what made me so invested in strength
- 26:42Speaker 3: training once I started properly training the gym, because I
- 26:45Speaker 3: was like, oh, this is cool, Like you can have
- 26:48Speaker 3: an injury, but you can actually almost come back better. Like,
- 26:50Speaker 3: if you watch videos of me moving, you'll notice I
- 26:53Speaker 3: jump a lot, and I'm not on the ground often,
- 26:55Speaker 3: and I'm often upside down and I'm.
- 26:57Speaker 2: Doing all these things.
- 26:58Speaker 3: And yeah, I have mental pins everyone knee, but I
- 27:00Speaker 3: have the strength and stability in that leg from training
- 27:03Speaker 3: and doing proper recovery to allow me to do that
- 27:06Speaker 3: and following some rules like yeah, I don't ski, So
- 27:09Speaker 3: when everyone goes away on these awesome skiing holidays, I'm like, Nope,
- 27:12Speaker 3: I'm going to go to a beach.
- 27:14Speaker 2: I'm going to go to Miami or something.
- 27:17Speaker 3: But I guess it's that same thing too, Like what's
- 27:19Speaker 3: the point in complaining when really the point is it's
- 27:21Speaker 3: a celebration, Like you're lucky you can still do this.
- 27:24Speaker 3: So I try and tell people that all the time
- 27:27Speaker 3: when they get an injury, I'm like, this is actually
- 27:29Speaker 3: the coolest thing that's going to happen to you, because
- 27:30Speaker 3: you're going to become way more strategic and precise with
- 27:34Speaker 3: your movement patterns, and also you're going to be way
- 27:36Speaker 3: more grateful for your body.
- 27:48Speaker 1: Quick break from today's episode to give the sponsor Athletic
- 27:51Speaker 1: Greens a little bit of love. I was so humble
- 27:55Speaker 1: to have the opportunity to speak with some women at
- 27:57Speaker 1: Columbia Business School last week, and one of them is
- 28:00Speaker 1: asking me about my morning routine and how it sets
- 28:02Speaker 1: me up for success.
- 28:04Speaker 2: Next to my coffee.
- 28:05Speaker 1: Athleticgreens is definitely a staple of my mornings. Let me
- 28:10Speaker 1: tell you, not only does it taste great, but it's
- 28:12Speaker 1: like insurance for my body with all the essential vitamins
- 28:15Speaker 1: and minerals, digestive enzymes, probiotics, probiotics, adaptagens, superfoods, it's got
- 28:21Speaker 1: it all. Athletic Greens has got my back and they
- 28:24Speaker 1: want to have yours. They're offering a special deal to
- 28:27Speaker 1: hurdle listeners for twenty free travel packs and that's a
- 28:30Speaker 1: ninety nine dollars value with your first purchase.
- 28:33Speaker 3: Just go to.
- 28:33Speaker 1: Athleticgreens dot com slash hurdle to claim it. No code necessary. Again,
- 28:37Speaker 1: that's Athleticgreens dot com slash hurdle.
- 28:41Speaker 2: Let's get back to it.
- 28:51Speaker 1: I'm sitting down here with kst Godso she's a Nike
- 28:54Speaker 1: Master Trainer. Okay, so you are in in and out
- 28:58Speaker 1: of LA in and out of New York working with Nike.
- 29:00Speaker 1: You're done with Leeds Mills and then like, then what happens?
- 29:05Speaker 2: Then? I was coming to America so much actually that.
- 29:10Speaker 3: I came through the airport at one stage and I
- 29:13Speaker 3: got held in customs for five hours and they were like.
- 29:16Speaker 2: What are you doing?
- 29:17Speaker 3: Like you were here a lot, and I was like,
- 29:20Speaker 3: it's true, and this is I told the truth. And
- 29:24Speaker 3: I was like, look, I come in in and out
- 29:25Speaker 3: all the time, but I don't get paid to work
- 29:27Speaker 3: here or anything. And they're like, okay, you just need
- 29:31Speaker 3: to get a visa because you're here more than you're
- 29:33Speaker 3: in your home country. And I was like, that's fair.
- 29:35Speaker 3: So I actually then was given a call to action.
- 29:38Speaker 3: I was like, okay, I have to get my visa.
- 29:40Speaker 3: And I was excited because I'd always wanted to move
- 29:43Speaker 3: to the States, but I kind of almost needed that
- 29:45Speaker 3: push and that little scare to go and get it.
- 29:47Speaker 3: And then so I luckily I had a really great
- 29:49Speaker 3: immigration lawyer, and then you know, eight weeks later.
- 29:52Speaker 2: I had my visa.
- 29:53Speaker 3: And I mean I stayed in the States then for
- 29:56Speaker 3: three months and then went home to New Zealand for
- 29:58Speaker 3: six weeks while I waited for my visa, and I
- 30:03Speaker 3: in the meantime had been reached out to you by Equinox.
- 30:05Speaker 3: It was always one of the companies when I'd wrote
- 30:07Speaker 3: for Liz Mils, I always just say, oh, man, we
- 30:09Speaker 3: need to be more like Equinox, Like they know what
- 30:10Speaker 3: they want and they're really like out there with their
- 30:13Speaker 3: marketing and you know, they have a point of view
- 30:16Speaker 3: and they're not trying to not offend everyone. And I
- 30:18Speaker 3: thought that was really cool, and so I'd always wanted
- 30:22Speaker 3: to work with them. And I always say to people,
- 30:23Speaker 3: I really believe you speak things into existence and you
- 30:27Speaker 3: you have to manifest your dreams and vocalize them. Don't
- 30:30Speaker 3: tell everyone, but like make yourself accountable to them.
- 30:33Speaker 1: One of my goal, one of my goals for October whatever,
- 30:36Speaker 1: I'm like, what month are we in?
- 30:37Speaker 2: All? October is almost over?
- 30:38Speaker 1: When of my goals for October was to come up
- 30:40Speaker 1: with three affirmations that I'm going to say every day
- 30:43Speaker 1: for like goals that are within the next two years.
- 30:47Speaker 2: One of them, I'll share this with you, Yeah.
- 30:49Speaker 3: Tell me now, I'll hold you accountable and everyone else
- 30:51Speaker 3: everyone guys DM every day.
- 30:55Speaker 2: Well, it's kind of a pathetic goal.
- 30:56Speaker 1: Actually, someone else is going to accept my packages by
- 31:01Speaker 1: twenty twenty, So That could mean I live in a
- 31:04Speaker 1: doormand building.
- 31:05Speaker 2: It could mean I have my own office.
- 31:08Speaker 1: Maybe I have an amazing apartment with my own office
- 31:10Speaker 1: that's also in a doormand building. But by twenty twenty,
- 31:13Speaker 1: that's happening, someone's accepting the package. I bet you that's
- 31:15Speaker 1: happening by twenty nineteen. I'm cutting a year off that.
- 31:18Speaker 2: Maybe mid twenty nineteen. Okay, all right, so anyway affirmation.
- 31:22Speaker 3: Yeah, So Equinox reached out. They wanted me to design
- 31:25Speaker 3: a gym for them. They were they wanted to explore
- 31:27Speaker 3: a new space and have a way that people that
- 31:30Speaker 3: weren't Equinox members could come and work out in the
- 31:32Speaker 3: space that was really pushing new and upcoming things in
- 31:36Speaker 3: the fitness industry. So it was for trainers that were
- 31:39Speaker 3: trying things out. It could basically be kind of a
- 31:42Speaker 3: lab for both trainers and also Equinox for them to
- 31:45Speaker 3: innovate on new types of programming. So I worked in
- 31:48Speaker 3: the corporate office to help get project ready to open,
- 31:52Speaker 3: and then once project opened, I switched back to just
- 31:55Speaker 3: teaching for them there alongside all the work that I
- 31:57Speaker 3: do for Nike. The reality of my life is and
- 32:00Speaker 3: I'm with Nike. Nike is my husband. You know, I
- 32:03Speaker 3: am with them most of the time, So anything else
- 32:07Speaker 3: that I do has to come second to that, and
- 32:10Speaker 3: that's a choice by me. So that's how I structure
- 32:14Speaker 3: my life.
- 32:15Speaker 1: Do you think that there have been things in your
- 32:17Speaker 1: life that have come second to that that have been
- 32:20Speaker 1: hard to deal with?
- 32:21Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 32:21Speaker 3: I definitely put my boyfriend second to that from New
- 32:24Speaker 3: Zealand for years and he was incredibly patient about it.
- 32:30Speaker 3: And friendships and you know, it wasn't that I wasn't
- 32:33Speaker 3: there for my friends, but I missed weddings, I missed.
- 32:35Speaker 2: I missed a lot. But I also wouldn't.
- 32:42Speaker 3: My story wouldn't be my story without everything that I've
- 32:46Speaker 3: done with Nike. And it's pretty crazy to say, like
- 32:48Speaker 3: you've grown up with Nike, like to be with them
- 32:50Speaker 3: basically from like twenty two to now thirty is really cool.
- 32:54Speaker 2: Like I don't know anything else. That's been my whole life.
- 32:57Speaker 3: So yes, there's been other offers and things that have
- 32:59Speaker 3: come in, and you know, people will throw money at
- 33:02Speaker 3: you and they want this and they want that, and
- 33:03Speaker 3: I was like, yeah, but that that's not in line
- 33:07Speaker 3: with my soul, right, that's not what I what I
- 33:11Speaker 3: believe in like sometimes you know, we forget you just
- 33:14Speaker 3: get so in the motion of the work and what
- 33:16Speaker 3: you're doing and blah blah. I don't sit there necessarily
- 33:19Speaker 3: and think about my role with Nike that much.
- 33:21Speaker 2: I'm just thinking about what.
- 33:22Speaker 3: I'm doing and what I can be doing, and what
- 33:24Speaker 3: we can be doing to service people better. I'm not
- 33:26Speaker 3: ever there being like, oh, well I'm in that campaign
- 33:29Speaker 3: or like I designed a shoe.
- 33:30Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 33:31Speaker 3: But you also you can get a bit lost in
- 33:34Speaker 3: the work that sometimes you don't celebrate moments as much
- 33:37Speaker 3: as maybe you used to.
- 33:38Speaker 2: I totally hear that. So talk to me a little
- 33:40Speaker 2: bit about what it was like.
- 33:41Speaker 1: The first time that you actually saw yourself like in
- 33:44Speaker 1: a campaign.
- 33:47Speaker 3: Well, I remember the first time that they told me
- 33:49Speaker 3: that I got to work out on the app. So
- 33:50Speaker 3: that was one of the first goals that I set
- 33:52Speaker 3: out loud. And I always used to say to my
- 33:56Speaker 3: boyfriend in New Zealand. I was like, you know, when
- 33:57Speaker 3: something really awesome happens in my career, I'm going to
- 34:00Speaker 3: myself like that Cartier ring that I really wanted. And
- 34:02Speaker 3: he was like, well, maybe you need to specifically state
- 34:05Speaker 3: what it is because you keep saying when something awesome happens,
- 34:08Speaker 3: and these great things keep happening and you don't buy
- 34:10Speaker 3: the ring. And I was like, fine, if I get
- 34:12Speaker 3: to work out on the Nike App, I'll buy the ring.
- 34:15Speaker 2: We shook on it. Literally four weeks later.
- 34:18Speaker 3: I get told after We've wrapped this event in Melbourne
- 34:21Speaker 3: and I've just been training with Victoria Azarenka and all
- 34:24Speaker 3: these girls, which was really cool, and they tell me
- 34:27Speaker 3: they sent me down.
- 34:28Speaker 2: They're like, Hege, we got to tell you something. I
- 34:29Speaker 2: was like, oh God, what did I do?
- 34:31Speaker 3: And they're like, you booked a Nike campaign and you're
- 34:34Speaker 3: getting a workout on the app. And I just bawled
- 34:37Speaker 3: my eyes out, and I was like, I've got to
- 34:38Speaker 3: call my dad and then and I was so proud
- 34:42Speaker 3: and I was so excited. So then we shot the
- 34:44Speaker 3: campaign in Mexico City, which is really funny because I
- 34:47Speaker 3: trained so hard before I was going to film this.
- 34:50Speaker 3: I was a user of the Nike App before I
- 34:53Speaker 3: even worked for Nike, so this was a big moment
- 34:55Speaker 3: for me. We trained so hard to get there for
- 34:58Speaker 3: the shoot and then to have the altar you'd like
- 35:00Speaker 3: knock us on our ass, like it is you do
- 35:03Speaker 3: like three burpies and you're like, oh my gosh, so dizzy.
- 35:06Speaker 2: So that was funny.
- 35:07Speaker 3: And it came out maybe five months after we shot it,
- 35:11Speaker 3: and it was definitely a really special moment. It was
- 35:16Speaker 3: really cool, and it wasn't even about It wasn't even
- 35:18Speaker 3: for other people to see it and be like, oh,
- 35:21Speaker 3: it was just for me to be like, whoa. That
- 35:23Speaker 3: was something I really thought, dreamed and I made it happen.
- 35:26Speaker 3: Did you buy the ring? I bought the ring? So
- 35:29Speaker 3: I told Nike the story. When we're in mixed the
- 35:31Speaker 3: city doing no I wish they should have. I told
- 35:35Speaker 3: them the story. And then maybe three weeks after that,
- 35:38Speaker 3: we started on the Nike tour and the first stop
- 35:41Speaker 3: was Hong Kong and there was a cartier attached to
- 35:44Speaker 3: our hotel. So two of the girls that were there
- 35:46Speaker 3: and knew the story, who worked on the Nike team,
- 35:48Speaker 3: They're like, Okay.
- 35:49Speaker 2: You're going to get your ring. I was like, oh
- 35:51Speaker 2: my god, okay.
- 35:52Speaker 3: And the funny thing is, I remember some of my
- 35:55Speaker 3: friends at the time were like, what a brat like?
- 35:58Speaker 2: And I was like, Oh my god, how dare you like?
- 36:00Speaker 2: This is a big thing? Yeah.
- 36:02Speaker 3: I every time when I wear that ring, I'm like, yeah,
- 36:07Speaker 3: this reminds me of hard work. But then the funniest
- 36:09Speaker 3: thing was the second workout I got on the app.
- 36:11Speaker 3: Everyone was like, okay, as you're getting yourself another Katier ring,
- 36:13Speaker 3: I was like, no, oh, buy one if I get
- 36:15Speaker 3: a shoe, And then I had a shoe come out
- 36:18Speaker 3: this year with Nike, and I was like, I'm definitely
- 36:19Speaker 3: just for the record, guys, I'm not buying another ring, Like.
- 36:21Speaker 2: I don't need one. I don't even wear my rings
- 36:23Speaker 2: because I'm always in the gym.
- 36:25Speaker 3: But I think for me, it was more of like
- 36:27Speaker 3: a having a token of something to look at and
- 36:29Speaker 3: be like, that's what hard work.
- 36:32Speaker 2: God to say, that's what hard work looks like. Hard
- 36:34Speaker 2: work looks like Katier.
- 36:35Speaker 3: No, but like to a reminder, it's a visual reminder
- 36:38Speaker 3: and something I can touch in tangible to be like, Okay,
- 36:41Speaker 3: you can dream, but can you work for your dreams.
- 36:44Speaker 2: I love it.
- 36:45Speaker 1: I love it, and I love that you're like all
- 36:46Speaker 1: about hard work because I think a lot of people
- 36:49Speaker 1: kind of hope for something, or they wish for something,
- 36:51Speaker 1: or they feel like if they say it out loud
- 36:54Speaker 1: enough that like maybe one day it'll happen. And I'm
- 36:56Speaker 1: not not to say again back to this affirmation thing
- 36:59Speaker 1: that like there's no power that But if you're not
- 37:00Speaker 1: willing to do the work, then how are you entitled
- 37:04Speaker 1: to the reward?
- 37:05Speaker 3: Well, also, if you don't want to work for it,
- 37:08Speaker 3: then when you get there, what is yours?
- 37:11Speaker 2: What do you have to share with people?
- 37:14Speaker 3: Because your energy comes from everything that you know you've
- 37:17Speaker 3: put into something, so you want that energy to be
- 37:21Speaker 3: bright and be pyro essentially, as we would say, you know,
- 37:25Speaker 3: and there's a difference when you especially as a trainer,
- 37:30Speaker 3: you cannot ask people to do stuff that you can't
- 37:32Speaker 3: do yourself, Like you need to know what it's like
- 37:34Speaker 3: to go through this stuff. And that's why I always
- 37:37Speaker 3: started out when I used to teach group classes, I
- 37:39Speaker 3: did the whole workout with everyone. So I'm like, yep,
- 37:41Speaker 3: I know you're feeling like crap. I disputed my mouth
- 37:43Speaker 3: and swallowed it and had to keep teaching. That actually
- 37:45Speaker 3: happened quite a few times. I totally feel that, But
- 37:49Speaker 3: I think, yeah, there's definitely it's been interesting as years
- 37:54Speaker 3: have gone by and social media has become a big thing,
- 37:56Speaker 3: and I think that's become a different way for people
- 37:58Speaker 3: to maybe think that that's work right, And yes, like
- 38:01Speaker 3: I share a lot on social but never like, even
- 38:05Speaker 3: when I share workouts, I filmed the drills after I've
- 38:08Speaker 3: done my workout, So it's actually sometimes my form isn't
- 38:10Speaker 3: as good because I'm exhausted because I've just trained for
- 38:12Speaker 3: like sixteen to ninety minutes or something.
- 38:14Speaker 2: But my work has to come first, and that's a
- 38:16Speaker 2: rule on everything.
- 38:17Speaker 1: Talk to me a little bit about how social media
- 38:19Speaker 1: has kind of changed the game maybe for you or
- 38:22Speaker 1: altered some of the things you're doing on the regular.
- 38:25Speaker 3: Okay, So I would say I think social media is
- 38:30Speaker 3: great in terms of being able to communicate with people
- 38:33Speaker 3: and share with people, and I think there's a lot
- 38:36Speaker 3: of positives in that sense. I also think social media
- 38:38Speaker 3: is a huge time suck, so you have to be
- 38:40Speaker 3: disciplined with it. And actually, maybe six months ago now,
- 38:43Speaker 3: I stopped scrolling the feed and that was one of
- 38:47Speaker 3: the best things I ever did, because I really took
- 38:48Speaker 3: some inventory on my life and I was like, I'm.
- 38:50Speaker 2: Not reading as many books anymore, I'm.
- 38:53Speaker 3: Not reading the news, I'm not you know, doing a
- 38:57Speaker 3: lot of these things where really, if I had time,
- 38:59Speaker 3: then I should be investing in something a little bit
- 39:03Speaker 3: better than looking at just photos of stuff, Like I'll
- 39:06Speaker 3: go directly to my friends' pages to see this stuff,
- 39:08Speaker 3: but I don't need to scroll through the feed of
- 39:10Speaker 3: like seven hundred and something people that you follow, and
- 39:12Speaker 3: I see all this clutter and have it in your
- 39:15Speaker 3: head that often without you realizing before you know it,
- 39:18Speaker 3: it makes you feel.
- 39:19Speaker 2: The type of way about something.
- 39:21Speaker 3: Yeah, So I try and new social media as a
- 39:24Speaker 3: way to share energy with people and be like, whether
- 39:28Speaker 3: that be how I like to style things, workouts, I'm
- 39:30Speaker 3: doing things I like, Yes, I do share like when
- 39:33Speaker 3: I travel and stuff.
- 39:34Speaker 2: It's also a way for my family and my friends
- 39:36Speaker 2: back home to see what I'm doing totally.
- 39:38Speaker 3: But there's a majority of my life you actually won't
- 39:42Speaker 3: see on social and so I think a lot of
- 39:44Speaker 3: the time people are like, oh, you worked out like
- 39:46Speaker 3: four times that I'm like, no, no, that was just
- 39:48Speaker 3: I don't film often the people that I'm training because
- 39:51Speaker 3: I respect their privacy and when we're working, like my
- 39:53Speaker 3: phone is away, like I'm fully focused on them. I'm
- 39:56Speaker 3: very hands on with my training, Like if you train
- 39:58Speaker 3: with me, like it's you're getting.
- 40:01Speaker 2: Adjusted a lot.
- 40:02Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, it's very like I want the best
- 40:05Speaker 3: for everyone that I work with, but it's an energy exchange,
- 40:08Speaker 3: so we both have to be there and fully in there,
- 40:10Speaker 3: Like I'm not tolerating them being on their phone at
- 40:12Speaker 3: the same time either.
- 40:14Speaker 1: I think it's interesting this idea that like people just
- 40:17Speaker 1: feel like they know everything about your life. Oh, absolutely,
- 40:19Speaker 1: you're only sharing like it's a highlight reel. I think
- 40:21Speaker 1: the funniest thing is when people write something like, oh
- 40:24Speaker 1: my god, are you okay? You look really sick blah
- 40:27Speaker 1: blah blah something if they think you might look too
- 40:29Speaker 1: thin or something like that.
- 40:30Speaker 2: I'm like, so bizarre, because you actually don't even know me,
- 40:33Speaker 2: like you've never met.
- 40:34Speaker 3: Like, and I have a lot of friends, Like my
- 40:36Speaker 3: best friend's a model, and I think some of the
- 40:39Speaker 3: things that people write on her stuff are wild, Like
- 40:41Speaker 3: they're just things that she's like my baby sister, and
- 40:44Speaker 3: it's things that I'd never hope for her to ever
- 40:47Speaker 3: have to read.
- 40:48Speaker 2: And someone would say.
- 40:49Speaker 3: When she's the most hard working, kind, caring, intelligent girl. Yes,
- 40:53Speaker 3: she happens to be ridiculously good looking and be a
- 40:56Speaker 3: Victoria's Secret model and many other things, but what makes
- 41:00Speaker 3: her her and so uniquely her are not these things
- 41:04Speaker 3: that people just make an assumption about. And you know,
- 41:07Speaker 3: so I always say with people that are busy being
- 41:10Speaker 3: keyboard warriors, I'm like, why don't you take that energy
- 41:12Speaker 3: into the gym, because you'll bet her off, like focusing
- 41:16Speaker 3: on your own life. But I think with social media
- 41:19Speaker 3: it's allowed for a lot of comparison. And that's where
- 41:21Speaker 3: I would come back to people and say, well, if
- 41:23Speaker 3: you use it as a tool for collaboration and as
- 41:26Speaker 3: a tool as a way to share ideas and all
- 41:28Speaker 3: these other things, then that's really cool. But if you
- 41:30Speaker 3: find that you have a slightly violent relationship with it
- 41:33Speaker 3: and it makes you, well, exert some self control and
- 41:36Speaker 3: get off.
- 41:37Speaker 2: It right right.
- 41:38Speaker 1: And I mean you said, you said you've limited your
- 41:40Speaker 1: use over the past six months, So I'm going to
- 41:42Speaker 1: transition us a little bit into just like a work
- 41:45Speaker 1: life balance, yes, because obviously they are the people on
- 41:48Speaker 1: your install that are like, all you do is work out, Yeah,
- 41:51Speaker 1: but that's not all you do. So talk to me
- 41:53Speaker 1: about the Kursty that's like not at nike HK.
- 41:57Speaker 3: Well, the Kirsty that is not she's very weird. I
- 42:02Speaker 3: actually always say to people that weird as a compliment.
- 42:05Speaker 3: I've always been quite extra. My mom said, I was
- 42:08Speaker 3: like having triplets. My poor brother grew up with me
- 42:12Speaker 3: as his tag along to everything, like I was the
- 42:14Speaker 3: psycho tomboy, Like I just wanted to do everything that
- 42:17Speaker 3: he was doing. And I'm really I hope that when
- 42:20Speaker 3: I have daughters, and I hope I get daughters, that
- 42:23Speaker 3: they're little tomboys too, because I think it. I imagine you
- 42:26Speaker 3: were a tomboy too. You're sitting here with your cat
- 42:27Speaker 3: backwards because it's just the you know, and when I'm
- 42:33Speaker 3: not seen working out, like working out is my greatest joy,
- 42:38Speaker 3: Like nothing makes me happier. And I honestly really do
- 42:42Speaker 3: not care about Like you can take pretty much everything
- 42:45Speaker 3: away from me.
- 42:45Speaker 2: Don't take my friends, don't take my workout time.
- 42:48Speaker 3: Obviously my family and my cat, but you know, like
- 42:51Speaker 3: those are the things that really matter to me the most.
- 42:53Speaker 3: It's not my possessions or anything like that. I don't
- 42:55Speaker 3: care about money in the bank. I don't whatever it is. Yes,
- 42:58Speaker 3: I have a finance degree, so that's funny to say.
- 43:01Speaker 3: But working out was always my way to celebrate things,
- 43:03Speaker 3: my way to get through things, like just to recalibrate
- 43:07Speaker 3: on anything, and I love it. And that's why I
- 43:09Speaker 3: became a trainer because I wanted to share that with
- 43:11Speaker 3: other people. And at the time, it wasn't cool to
- 43:13Speaker 3: be a trainer and it was kind of like crass
- 43:16Speaker 3: a little to work out and stuff. So it's been
- 43:19Speaker 3: really interesting to watch that industry evolve. But I always
- 43:22Speaker 3: say I'm in the business of bodies, So my business
- 43:24Speaker 3: is outside of just training as Pyro Girls, which yes,
- 43:27Speaker 3: is a workout that we have and we sell merchant stuff,
- 43:30Speaker 3: but Pyro is really more of a spirit that we
- 43:32Speaker 3: want people to embody, and our vision is that ideally
- 43:36Speaker 3: we end up being able to sponsor different Pyro girls
- 43:39Speaker 3: and boys. It's not like we now shorten it often
- 43:42Speaker 3: to just saying Pyro because it is actually men and women.
- 43:47Speaker 3: But we want to be able to have people in
- 43:49Speaker 3: communities that are being supported in all different cities around
- 43:52Speaker 3: the world that being Pyro is something you can come
- 43:55Speaker 3: back to, be the fire that burns inside out and
- 43:58Speaker 3: care about what you do. Because I always find it
- 44:01Speaker 3: funny if people say I don't really care, I'm like,
- 44:03Speaker 3: you should care, like it's your life. Please invest in
- 44:07Speaker 3: it like you know and not to the point where
- 44:09Speaker 3: it's about care about everything, but just have a point
- 44:12Speaker 3: of view and like it or don't like. It's about
- 44:15Speaker 3: not complaining, like and taking action on things and just
- 44:17Speaker 3: doing stuff and going after things.
- 44:19Speaker 2: Yeah, totally, So that's why, you know.
- 44:22Speaker 3: So we have Pyro goals, which is cool, and that
- 44:24Speaker 3: feels just like it's a mission and that's like something
- 44:26Speaker 3: that's just always there and that's fun and that's a
- 44:28Speaker 3: fun way for me to collaborate with other people and
- 44:31Speaker 3: other businesses like skyting and prevail boxing and stuff like that.
- 44:35Speaker 3: Then I have a protein powder called made of I
- 44:38Speaker 3: have to learn to pronounce that better with my accent
- 44:40Speaker 3: because everyone thinks I say, like Bernie made off, but
- 44:43Speaker 3: like made wasn't even in my going there, just in
- 44:47Speaker 3: case for the translation. But the protein really came from
- 44:53Speaker 3: I was so frustrated with the non transparency in the industry.
- 44:57Speaker 2: And you work with people all.
- 44:58Speaker 3: The time to try and make them feel better about
- 45:00Speaker 3: and then they're taking products that they genuinely are being
- 45:03Speaker 3: told are good for them, and companies can lie on
- 45:06Speaker 3: the packaging and everything like that, and people are just misinformed.
- 45:09Speaker 3: So then they're fueling yourself with crap really. So we
- 45:14Speaker 3: started working with a lab and we made a protein
- 45:17Speaker 3: that we really wanted to be super high performance, but
- 45:19Speaker 3: we wanted it to be beautiful so that even people
- 45:21Speaker 3: that don't consider themselves to be really high performing in
- 45:24Speaker 3: the gym, but they just want to take care of
- 45:26Speaker 3: their body, that it would appeal to both of those
- 45:28Speaker 3: natures of people.
- 45:29Speaker 1: So, like, how does one even go about like, oh
- 45:32Speaker 1: I started working with a lab, Like, yeah, I just had.
- 45:34Speaker 2: A lab on my on my cell. I just figured
- 45:36Speaker 2: and I hit them up. Yeah, I just had them up.
- 45:38Speaker 3: Well, it came from like I was actually I was
- 45:41Speaker 3: complaining to my ex and I was like, I'm so
- 45:46Speaker 3: angry and there's like these sites like labed or that
- 45:48Speaker 3: expose you know, what truly is in products. And he's like, well,
- 45:51Speaker 3: what are you going to do about it? And I
- 45:53Speaker 3: was like I guess, yeah, what am I going to
- 45:56Speaker 3: do about it? So we started together working on it,
- 45:59Speaker 3: and he Creative Studios, so he was really great with
- 46:02Speaker 3: all the branding stuff, and we put ourselves through a
- 46:05Speaker 3: physical trial for like six to eight weeks trying all
- 46:08Speaker 3: these different products, all these other brands out there. We
- 46:10Speaker 3: vomited a lot. There's a lot of bad stuff on
- 46:13Speaker 3: the market.
- 46:14Speaker 2: It was a lot of.
- 46:14Speaker 3: Money spent too, but we wanted to know that we
- 46:16Speaker 3: were definitely doing this for a reason, and so then
- 46:20Speaker 3: after that we're like, Okay, this definitely needs to happen.
- 46:23Speaker 3: And we were in that process, we really learned a
- 46:25Speaker 3: lot about ingredients and from researching and doing a lot
- 46:28Speaker 3: of stuff. So our first sample that we made was pretty.
- 46:32Speaker 2: Much spot on to what we ended up with as
- 46:34Speaker 2: the final product.
- 46:35Speaker 3: We still tried a few variations from there, but we
- 46:37Speaker 3: wanted to make a very clean and functional way protein isolate.
- 46:42Speaker 3: It's way protein because that's what's authentic to me, and
- 46:44Speaker 3: I think that's important to stay in your lane with that.
- 46:47Speaker 3: I celebrate people that use plant protein if that's what
- 46:50Speaker 3: works for them. But way protein is the highest quality
- 46:55Speaker 3: protein that you can take. So and if that works
- 46:58Speaker 3: for you, awesome, take it. Take a good one. You
- 47:00Speaker 3: don't need all this other garbage in there. So I
- 47:02Speaker 3: was like, what if I could become this communicator to
- 47:05Speaker 3: people and try and make them understand why you take protein,
- 47:09Speaker 3: what's in it, why it matters what's in it, and
- 47:11Speaker 3: how you use it in your life. And again, like
- 47:14Speaker 3: the fitness thing, have it not be so tacky. So
- 47:17Speaker 3: that's why our packaging looks very beautiful and accessible.
- 47:20Speaker 2: And even the.
- 47:23Speaker 3: Serving suggestions says, you know, mix with six eight ounces
- 47:26Speaker 3: of water and consume without most confidence and what's it
- 47:28Speaker 3: called again?
- 47:29Speaker 2: Made of Okay?
- 47:30Speaker 1: And for someone that doesn't know any better, how much
- 47:32Speaker 1: protein should they be consuming after say a forty five
- 47:35Speaker 1: minute high intent tannibal, So you.
- 47:37Speaker 3: Would have like one scoop of protein. So each scoop
- 47:40Speaker 3: of our protein has twenty four grams of protein in it.
- 47:42Speaker 3: Some have nineteen grams, so ours is a little bit higher,
- 47:45Speaker 3: which is great because if you're having it as a
- 47:48Speaker 3: meal replacement, like say, if you end up making a
- 47:50Speaker 3: bigger smoothie as opposed to just a post workout shake,
- 47:52Speaker 3: it does leave you feeling full for longer. So that's
- 47:55Speaker 3: been cool that we have these moms, even moms that
- 47:57Speaker 3: like don't necessarily do high intensity they're like super into
- 48:00Speaker 3: their pilates and yoga stuff, that their morning ritual is
- 48:03Speaker 3: a smoothie and they've switched on to using it and
- 48:05Speaker 3: they're like, oh my gosh, like I'm actually snacking way
- 48:07Speaker 3: less because I feel really full. And I was like,
- 48:09Speaker 3: that's cool because My whole goal with it is I
- 48:11Speaker 3: just want people to feel confident in what they're ingesting.
- 48:15Speaker 3: Yeah and so yeah, so one scoop post workout is great.
- 48:20Speaker 3: I think it's perfect for New York Is too, because
- 48:22Speaker 3: a lot of the time we are on the goal. Yeah,
- 48:24Speaker 3: so we don't always have time for a meal. I
- 48:26Speaker 3: always say, you know, eat proper food when you can
- 48:28Speaker 3: have food, but use protein to support the training that
- 48:31Speaker 3: you're doing and to support your recovery.
- 48:33Speaker 1: You mentioned that you especially like never take away my
- 48:38Speaker 1: workout like your workout is it keeps you sane. So
- 48:41Speaker 1: I guess my follow up question for you, what was
- 48:44Speaker 1: one of the last times in your life that you
- 48:45Speaker 1: really felt like maybe you were going extra in the gym? Like,
- 48:49Speaker 1: what has been something that you've been trying to work
- 48:52Speaker 1: through maybe more lately.
- 48:54Speaker 3: Well, this is funny because actually recently I had a
- 48:58Speaker 3: nerve injury.
- 48:59Speaker 2: Dude, I have one of those. I have my hiatic nerve.
- 49:02Speaker 3: Oh that's a bad one, cute. I have never felt
- 49:07Speaker 3: I mean, I've had injuries in my life. I had
- 49:08Speaker 3: broken knee, I've you know, broken a lot of bones.
- 49:12Speaker 3: That was the most invasive pain I've ever felt in
- 49:15Speaker 3: my life where I was really scared because the I
- 49:20Speaker 3: was flying a lot this summer between LA and New York,
- 49:23Speaker 3: and there was times where I was coming back for
- 49:25Speaker 3: all of like eighteen hours, then getting back on a
- 49:27Speaker 3: plane and then doing it again and getting off Red
- 49:28Speaker 3: Eyes and going straight to work and going to shoots
- 49:30Speaker 3: and doing all these things. And I don't sleep well
- 49:33Speaker 3: as it is, so I was really taking my body
- 49:37Speaker 3: for granted. And I've basically been putting it through eight
- 49:40Speaker 3: years of high intensity and a lot of stuff, and yeah,
- 49:43Speaker 3: doing recovery here and there, but not as much as
- 49:46Speaker 3: I should and definitely not sleeping as much as I should.
- 49:49Speaker 3: And so I definitely there were signs for my body
- 49:53Speaker 3: saying slow down before it happened. And then that was
- 49:55Speaker 3: the last queue and it was like, okay, you're not
- 49:58Speaker 3: going to listen, like well physically stop you. And I
- 50:01Speaker 3: remember Christy Jones is one of my one of my
- 50:04Speaker 3: wives and one of my best friends who were on
- 50:06Speaker 3: skyting Yoga, and she'd bought me acupuncture for my birthday
- 50:09Speaker 3: with acupuncture session because we're obsessed with it.
- 50:12Speaker 2: And I remember having a caller and I was like crying.
- 50:14Speaker 3: I was like, I'm so much pain, like with my
- 50:16Speaker 3: nerve and I can't move, and like I was on
- 50:19Speaker 3: the street trying to walk to get to the session,
- 50:21Speaker 3: and then I get in there and I'm trying to
- 50:22Speaker 3: fill out paperwork and I'm like hunched over, and the poor.
- 50:25Speaker 2: Secretary leaders like are you okay.
- 50:26Speaker 3: It's like I don't know what's going on, and I'm
- 50:29Speaker 3: not a drama queen, like if anything, I'll try and
- 50:31Speaker 3: hide an injury, like I didn't want Nike to know.
- 50:34Speaker 3: I didn't want I was embarrassed in a sense because
- 50:36Speaker 3: I knew i'd done it to myself.
- 50:40Speaker 2: I ended up going.
- 50:40Speaker 3: At the time, I still just was like, oh, maybe
- 50:42Speaker 3: I've performed syndrome, you know, trying to self diagnose.
- 50:45Speaker 2: And anyway, it ended up being.
- 50:47Speaker 3: Once I went to the doctors and then they had
- 50:50Speaker 3: a like a virus in my nerve, which so it
- 50:52Speaker 3: can feel like a lot of muscle pain, but actually
- 50:56Speaker 3: it's it's total burnout. And so they're like, you really
- 50:59Speaker 3: have to look at your schedule and make some adult
- 51:04Speaker 3: decisions here. So I had to turn down some jobs
- 51:06Speaker 3: in LA and I had to really stay put. The
- 51:08Speaker 3: best thing that happened was i'd felt really tired of
- 51:10Speaker 3: New York, and I wasn't enjoying it, and I felt
- 51:13Speaker 3: like some of my positive light was escaping me because
- 51:16Speaker 3: I just was so swallowed in the tornado of work
- 51:19Speaker 3: and not having enough time to recover. So I had
- 51:25Speaker 3: to slow down. And actually, the funny thing is when
- 51:29Speaker 3: I say slow down, I still within that one week
- 51:31Speaker 3: went to Drake three times. But slow down and look
- 51:35Speaker 3: at and do things differently, and so you just got
- 51:38Speaker 3: to be in your Yeah, right, I exactly Drake helps,
- 51:42Speaker 3: he's part of the recovery plan. Still waiting for him
- 51:44Speaker 3: to call me. So I did. I love yoga and plarties.
- 51:50Speaker 3: I've really added that in a lot more over the
- 51:51Speaker 3: past year, even before I was injured, but I really
- 51:53Speaker 3: slowed down with a lot of my training was just
- 51:55Speaker 3: focusing on yoga and parties, doing a lot of cryo
- 51:57Speaker 3: in forred sauna, and focusing on sleep. Yeah, and now
- 52:03Speaker 3: I feel a lot better and I'm working on getting
- 52:05Speaker 3: my strength back in that leg. But I'm like, Okay,
- 52:09Speaker 3: I can't lose what I learned from that recovery process,
- 52:12Speaker 3: and that's really about self care, like focusing on breath,
- 52:16Speaker 3: my plates, traina cales a vampire breathing when we are
- 52:19Speaker 3: like just all stuck up on our chest, which I
- 52:20Speaker 3: think is what we all do when we feel a
- 52:22Speaker 3: sense of overwhelm. So it's funny that that's the opposite
- 52:25Speaker 3: of what you'd expect for me to answer and say
- 52:27Speaker 3: being dialed into training. But it was dialing into my
- 52:30Speaker 3: training being like, Okay, how are you going to train
- 52:32Speaker 3: more efficiently?
- 52:33Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean there's nerve pain is a really tough thing.
- 52:36Speaker 1: I have a bad nerve in my foot, and like,
- 52:38Speaker 1: I mean, you were on the street, you were trying
- 52:40Speaker 1: to get into the accupuncture studio, Like, there's nothing worse
- 52:43Speaker 1: than feeling just debilitated, and there's pretty much nothing you
- 52:47Speaker 1: can there's.
- 52:47Speaker 3: Nothing, you can do nothing, And like what like call
- 52:50Speaker 3: your parents in New Zealand cool and complained about how
- 52:52Speaker 3: bad healthcare is here, not helping either, So yeah it
- 52:57Speaker 3: so yeah, I mean, that was a good opportunity to
- 53:00Speaker 3: look inwards. But I was very conscious of the fact
- 53:04Speaker 3: that I ask my clients all the time to be
- 53:07Speaker 3: really smart with their bodies, but I wasn't being smart
- 53:09Speaker 3: with mine.
- 53:09Speaker 1: It's funny, you know, all the time I'll have all
- 53:13Speaker 1: of these conversations with the amazing people that come into
- 53:16Speaker 1: this room and before they walk in, they're like, these
- 53:18Speaker 1: are what I think my problems were.
- 53:21Speaker 2: You know, like I.
- 53:22Speaker 1: Really felt like when I was giving up Blais Mills,
- 53:25Speaker 1: it was such a hard time. And yes, please, it
- 53:28Speaker 1: was a very hard time. But then you talk about
- 53:31Speaker 1: your journey and you realize that they never stop. And
- 53:34Speaker 1: whether or not you're in a health and wellness field,
- 53:38Speaker 1: like you're obviously a master trainer and this has become
- 53:42Speaker 1: your life, but whether or not you're in this industry,
- 53:44Speaker 1: like there are so many times in our lives where
- 53:47Speaker 1: we're gonna dial it in to our bodies and how
- 53:50Speaker 1: we feel and all of that to just be better.
- 53:54Speaker 3: Yeah, be better, And like what is it? I mean,
- 53:58Speaker 3: like you say, like that's my thing. Don't take my
- 53:59Speaker 3: work cuts from me? And guess what. I took them
- 54:01Speaker 3: from myself because I couldn't walk. What do you sew that?
- 54:04Speaker 2: What are you? What are you still doing.
- 54:06Speaker 1: To this is and this infrared light? Okay, well I'm
- 54:10Speaker 1: just gonna say because I mean I'll own it real quick.
- 54:12Speaker 1: Like with my I have a neuroma, which is an
- 54:14Speaker 1: inflame nerve in my left foot, and I'm training for
- 54:17Speaker 1: a marathon.
- 54:17Speaker 2: Because that's brilliant. Yeah.
- 54:18Speaker 1: Great, And what is interesting is when it doesn't bother me.
- 54:23Speaker 1: You know, It's like when you're taking It's like when
- 54:25Speaker 1: you're taking a Z pack and they're like, after four
- 54:27Speaker 1: days you feel better. Yeah, they're like, but take it
- 54:29Speaker 1: through seven. Yeah, this is that's recovery.
- 54:32Speaker 3: Yeah, you have to keep And I'm really fortunate that
- 54:34Speaker 3: I work with brands like Powered Art and High Price,
- 54:37Speaker 3: so I have a lot of like recovery equipment. But
- 54:39Speaker 3: I'd say, like, I'm obsessed with infrared light, so I
- 54:43Speaker 3: actually have my own like little infrared light thing that
- 54:45Speaker 3: wraps around you so I can put that over my
- 54:48Speaker 3: nerve when.
- 54:49Speaker 2: I'm at home in apartment spaceship.
- 54:51Speaker 3: Yeah, it's it's really cute, and but it's great because
- 54:54Speaker 3: it forces me to sit down and do my work
- 54:56Speaker 3: and emails and stuff like that. But yeah, like making
- 55:00Speaker 3: recovery a habit just like everything else. And I actually
- 55:03Speaker 3: say to people all the time, I'm like, hey, if
- 55:05Speaker 3: you don't have time to warm up properly, then you
- 55:06Speaker 3: don't deserve to work out, like you know, treat your
- 55:09Speaker 3: body with respect. It's like if you just decided to
- 55:11Speaker 3: skip out a part of like really important.
- 55:13Speaker 2: Part of cooking a meal.
- 55:15Speaker 1: What would you say are other things in your life
- 55:16Speaker 1: that you wish you gave more attention to, Maybe as
- 55:19Speaker 1: much attention as you give to your level of fitness.
- 55:23Speaker 3: Oh my god, I just feel like I'm turbo all
- 55:26Speaker 3: the time, and I'm not very good at calm.
- 55:28Speaker 2: Are you tired of that? Ever?
- 55:30Speaker 3: Sometimes, Like I love I love being energetic, but there's
- 55:34Speaker 3: a lot of the time where you kind of get
- 55:36Speaker 3: to there. I get to a Friday and I'm like,
- 55:38Speaker 3: I am rinsed dry, and like I work in the
- 55:42Speaker 3: weekends too, so I'm like, oh my gosh, I'm like
- 55:45Speaker 3: I need to figure this out, like get some more sleep.
- 55:47Speaker 3: And you know, actually it's crazy because now it's funny
- 55:51Speaker 3: that I end up shooting beauty campaigns, which I still
- 55:54Speaker 3: loll about a lot. But I was like, I can't
- 55:58Speaker 3: be a trainer, a businesswoman, a friend like Piro girl,
- 56:05Speaker 3: and a model. I guess with these some things if
- 56:07Speaker 3: I'm not finding some time for myself to actually just sleep.
- 56:11Speaker 2: And calm down and be quiet.
- 56:13Speaker 3: And so I think I'm very good at putting everyone
- 56:16Speaker 3: else before myself. Yeah, all the time, And sometimes I
- 56:20Speaker 3: the biggest thing that I've walked on this yere saying no, yeah.
- 56:24Speaker 2: I think it's it's also hard.
- 56:25Speaker 1: When you feel like you're on all the time and
- 56:28Speaker 1: then like the second not allowed to have a moment,
- 56:30Speaker 1: but the second you like do turn off. For me,
- 56:33Speaker 1: I've been like really trying to deal with this. Actually,
- 56:35Speaker 1: just like the second I turn off, it's like, all
- 56:37Speaker 1: of a sudden, I feel like very unsure and like
- 56:41Speaker 1: like I should be doing.
- 56:43Speaker 2: Something else, or I should be editing a podcast, or
- 56:45Speaker 2: like God knows what I should be doing.
- 56:47Speaker 1: But it's like I'll have these really exciting, big events
- 56:50Speaker 1: and the next day I'll like say to a.
- 56:53Speaker 2: Friend like I feel like really kind of unsure right now.
- 56:55Speaker 1: Yeah, And it's like it's like it's like there's a
- 56:58Speaker 1: it's like there's a decline relaxation almost.
- 57:02Speaker 2: It's so much.
- 57:02Speaker 3: It's funny though, because I've definitely got better at having
- 57:06Speaker 3: like this. It's like a reboot that kicks them straight away.
- 57:09Speaker 3: Like the moment that I start to get into a
- 57:11Speaker 3: whirlwind with a thought, I immediately override it. And it
- 57:14Speaker 3: sounds really stupid when I say it out loud, but
- 57:17Speaker 3: I just remind myself. I'm like, oh my god, like
- 57:20Speaker 3: this day happens once, Like I have so many things
- 57:23Speaker 3: to be grateful for, Like, oh my god, why am
- 57:25Speaker 3: I living in overwhelmed? I'm like, you thrive for this shit, right,
- 57:27Speaker 3: like you want you want to work for it. You've
- 57:30Speaker 3: always worked for everything you have, So why are you
- 57:32Speaker 3: overwhelmed by this task list of things that you have
- 57:34Speaker 3: to do?
- 57:34Speaker 2: Like, get it done, get it done. You can do it.
- 57:37Speaker 3: You've done other shit before and sometimes yep, you've got
- 57:39Speaker 3: to have a nap, okay, and don't beat yourself up
- 57:41Speaker 3: about of it. You're gonna have a nap, then you're
- 57:43Speaker 3: gonna get back up and you're gonna get through the list.
- 57:46Speaker 3: But I think it's just not letting us get too
- 57:49Speaker 3: far into our story of you know, being like whoa,
- 57:53Speaker 3: it's me.
- 57:54Speaker 1: Like totally and I mean we we are the people
- 57:56Speaker 1: that talk to ourselves the most every single day, right.
- 57:58Speaker 2: Yeah, Well, if you're going to be a to yourself
- 58:00Speaker 2: all your time.
- 58:01Speaker 3: Joe always says it the best Joe Holder, he always says,
- 58:04Speaker 3: you know, the mind is the gym that we live
- 58:05Speaker 3: in for like twenty three hours of the day, so
- 58:07Speaker 3: get it right. Yeah, yeah, And we're definitely a work
- 58:10Speaker 3: in progress all of us with that, but you know,
- 58:12Speaker 3: hold yourself accountable to it. Like if you know you
- 58:15Speaker 3: have a habit of getting into a dark spiral with things,
- 58:19Speaker 3: and if you know there's certain things that kick it off,
- 58:21Speaker 3: whether that be Instagram or different or like conversations with
- 58:23Speaker 3: certain people. I always talk about energy zappas, like sometimes
- 58:27Speaker 3: you know there's a reason why you as you get
- 58:29Speaker 3: older in life, like friendships change, yeah, and you have
- 58:32Speaker 3: to you have to figure out, like, hey, is this
- 58:34Speaker 3: a detrimental relationship or voice in my life? And it's
- 58:39Speaker 3: not about running away from people that sort of tell
- 58:41Speaker 3: you the truth. But like if there's someone that's just
- 58:43Speaker 3: a really like dark like light all the time, maybe
- 58:47Speaker 3: it's less time with them. And there are people that
- 58:50Speaker 3: are dreams and there are people that have You need
- 58:53Speaker 3: energy walls up, but also save some energy for yourself.
- 58:56Speaker 3: And it's like body tax, right, You can't you can't
- 58:59Speaker 3: give everything out. You can't give all of your energy away.
- 59:03Speaker 3: You have to keep a certain amount to pay that
- 59:04Speaker 3: tax back to yourself.
- 59:06Speaker 1: Looking over the past eight or so years that you
- 59:10Speaker 1: have been with Nike, what do you think has been
- 59:13Speaker 1: some of the best advice.
- 59:15Speaker 2: That you have been given. Oh, aside from obviously just
- 59:25Speaker 2: do it.
- 59:26Speaker 3: As I from obviously just do it, I think that
- 59:30Speaker 3: I love that Nike always celebrated me being a hype girl,
- 59:34Speaker 3: and they made me be proud and want to own
- 59:37Speaker 3: that even more. Like and when I say hype girl,
- 59:40Speaker 3: like because we always joke that that's my role, it's
- 59:43Speaker 3: because I love everyone so much and I love the
- 59:45Speaker 3: squad and I want to pull everyone's energy up. So
- 59:49Speaker 3: that's why I often get to lead things because they're
- 59:51Speaker 3: like she will like fight for everyone, like she wants
- 59:56Speaker 3: everyone as a group to do better and to do
- 59:59Speaker 3: well and to make sure everyone's feeling happy.
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: And so I think that I just love that they
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: that they've.
- 1:00:05Speaker 3: Allowed me to be this weird version of myself and
- 1:00:10Speaker 3: sharing these crazy passions and and so we have this
- 1:00:14Speaker 3: joke like on levels of appropriateness of like Keyance is
- 1:00:18Speaker 3: my stage name. So sometimes in some for some events
- 1:00:21Speaker 3: it's like, yeah, go out and be Keyance, and sometimes
- 1:00:23Speaker 3: it's like, hey, just be KG today, you know, like
- 1:00:27Speaker 3: depending on the market. But it's it's been really cool
- 1:00:32Speaker 3: to have have a brand there as so much of
- 1:00:35Speaker 3: your story, and I think people so often say, oh,
- 1:00:37Speaker 3: brands aren't your friends and that yeah, okay, maybe that's true.
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: But also maybe they.
- 1:00:43Speaker 3: Are, like I mean, like they're a huge part of
- 1:00:45Speaker 3: my story. They always will be. Like that's a fact.
- 1:00:49Speaker 3: I think that they definitely built this this fire in me.
- 1:00:55Speaker 3: They showed me what was possible. They teased me with
- 1:00:59Speaker 3: you know, all these different cities that I traveled with,
- 1:01:01Speaker 3: these people that I met, all these all these things,
- 1:01:03Speaker 3: and they just made me so driven.
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: To want more and more and more. I mean, that's
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: how we met. That's true.
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: What you you have the opportunity to offer yourself one
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: piece of advice to the Kirsty that is making this epic,
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: monumental decision to go with Nike, and she's confused and
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: she's crying, and she's probably very unsure.
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: What do you tell her looking back on it?
- 1:01:34Speaker 3: Now, take a deep breath, listen to your heart, and
- 1:01:40Speaker 3: don't worry about what anyone else does to you. I
- 1:01:43Speaker 3: love it because majority of the time, like you're gonna
- 1:01:47Speaker 3: what the point of view is irrelevant, you know, within yourself.
- 1:01:52Speaker 3: And I still remember when I had to write my
- 1:01:54Speaker 3: email making my decision to them, and I said, look,
- 1:01:57Speaker 3: no matter what, like no matter what, I choose. I
- 1:01:59Speaker 3: look like it's going to be hot breaking for me
- 1:02:02Speaker 3: either way. But I have to follow what I truly
- 1:02:06Speaker 3: feel in my heart, and that's overwhelmingly Nike. And so
- 1:02:11Speaker 3: I just say to people, I'm like, don't be afraid
- 1:02:13Speaker 3: to trust the unknown, but then be prepared to work.
- 1:02:18Speaker 3: I like it, Yeah, I love it. It'll be the
- 1:02:20Speaker 3: best guest you ever put in your tank. Seriously, your
- 1:02:23Speaker 3: perspective is mega refreshing. Chirsty, thanks so much for coming
