- 0:04of the Elon Musk podcast. Today we're peeling back the
- 0:07curtain a little bit on Spacex's grand plans and a little bit of
- 0:11drama that's going on with the next generation of their
- 0:14spacecraft. The Starship.
- 0:16Seems like Elon Musk and the SpaceX team are also pushing
- 0:19boundaries down at Boca Chica Starbase, Texas.
- 0:23From successfully landing and reusing Falcon 9 rocket boosters
- 0:27to planning uncrued missions to Mars, this company has been
- 0:30hitting milestone after milestone and continues to
- 0:34progress day in, day out. But things haven't always moved
- 0:37smoothly, and timelines often stretch beyond original
- 0:41projections. In this episode, we'll discuss
- 0:43the hurdles, updates, and future plans of Spacex's Starship.
- 0:48Now, SpaceX has established itself as a pioneer in the
- 0:51commercial space sector. Last year, the company managed
- 0:54to conduct 70 launches using Falcon 9 rockets, each featuring
- 0:59a reusable booster stage, and this innovation and reusability
- 1:03has significantly cut down costs, allowing for more
- 1:05frequent launch schedules. However, Musk is not a stranger
- 1:08to setbacks. Promises of timelines often
- 1:11outpace actual progress, and ambitious projects can run into
- 1:15delays. Back in 2016, during an
- 1:17International Astronomical Congress and Guadalajara,
- 1:20Mexico, Musk revealed Spacex's initial designs for what was
- 1:24then called the Interplanetary Transport System or the ITS aim
- 1:29was for the first uncrewed landing on Mars to occur in
- 1:332022, followed by the 1st flight with people on board in 2024.
- 1:39Fast forward to today, and although there has been a test
- 1:42flight of Starship, it didn't go very smoothly.
- 1:46The spacecraft lost control during its ascent, leading to
- 1:49its detonation for safety reasons.
- 1:52Now a second Starship is already on standby.
- 1:54According to Musk, the next move now depends on the Federal
- 1:57Aviation Administration, which is expected to issue a new
- 2:00launch license sometime soon, And Musk shared some updates on
- 2:04Starship design. The second stage engines will
- 2:06ignite before separation from the booster, this time, a
- 2:09procedure known as hot staging, designed for maximum efficiency.
- 2:14But it's also a complicated operation that could lead to
- 2:17unexpected challenges. And while SpaceX has been known
- 2:20for its engineering progress, navigating through regulatory
- 2:23frameworks remains very challenging.
- 2:26The company is currently awaiting approval from the FAA
- 2:29for the next IFT 2 Starship test flight from Boca Chica Starbase,
- 2:35Texas. And this isn't the only
- 2:36regulatory hurdle, though. The US Fish and Wildlife Service
- 2:41has received a final biological assessment from the FAA,
- 2:45initiating a 30 day review period that could be extended to
- 2:49the spring of 2024 under certain conditions and according to the
- 2:54Fish and Wildlife Service, reinitiation of formal
- 2:57consultation under the Endangered Species Act is
- 3:00necessary when there's significant change in a project
- 3:04and its impacts. This review is a result of
- 3:06Spacex's newly implemented Water Dillard system, part of a list
- 3:10of 63 corrective actions recommended after the
- 3:13unsuccessful launch of the first Starship test flight.
- 3:17This new system has already been deployed during static fire
- 3:20tests of Booster 9, which is set to be the next SpaceX launch
- 3:24vehicle, and Elon Musk is no longer explicitly stating that
- 3:27humans will be on Mars by 2024. However, he does have other
- 3:31ambitious plans for Starship. One such goal is the quick turn
- 3:35around between launches, which would involve catching the Super
- 3:38heavy booster in the Starship upper stage in mid air after
- 3:41they returned from the missions. Musk says that it's a decent
- 3:45chance of this happening within the next year.
- 3:49Now. Additionally, SpaceX is planning
- 3:51to launch its next generation Starlink satellites using
- 3:54expendable versions of the Starship.
- 3:56Now, the question that still remains unanswered is when will
- 4:00Starship land NASA astronauts on the moon?
- 4:03While Musk acknowledged that a lunar Lander version is in the
- 4:05works, he emphasized that the design will not deviate much
- 4:08from a spacecraft intended for Mars missions.
- 4:11Now Artemis 3, NASA's program to land astronauts on the moon, is
- 4:16currently scheduled for late 2025, but it could be pushed
- 4:20back further. Spacex's Starship was chosen as
- 4:22the human landing system for this mission, and a senior
- 4:25SpaceX official noted that there is a backlog with FAA work
- 4:29leading to delays in the licensing progress in the
- 4:31process and Starship. This could have ripple effects
- 4:34in the art of his program's timeline as well, and there's
- 4:37also political pressure mounting for SpaceX, especially as its
- 4:40vice president of build and flight reliability is set to
- 4:43testify before the Senate Subcommittee on Space and
- 4:46Science. This hearing will likely cover a
- 4:49range of issues, from suborbital flights to lunar surface
- 4:53habitats, and is crucial for SpaceX.
- 4:55As it continues to push the envelope in space exploration
- 4:58technologies. And in the labyrinth of these
- 5:01regulations and bureaucratic obstacles, SpaceX is finding
- 5:04itself at the crossroads of innovation and policy.
- 5:07This testimony isn't just about SpaceX, it's a marker for the
- 5:11entire industries. Companies like Blue Origin,
- 5:14Virgin Galactic, and others will also weigh in shaping the
- 5:16conversation from suborbital tourism to long term lunar
- 5:21habitation. Now, this juncture is
- 5:23particularly pivotal for Spacex's Starship program.
- 5:26The Human Landing system for NASA's Artemis missions is in
- 5:30play here, and according to SpaceX officials, the snail's
- 5:33pace of FAA approvals has become a critical path item, putting
- 5:38pressure on an already challenging Artemis timeline.
- 5:41Now, the need for a series of demonstration flights, ranging
- 5:43from ship to ship refueling to uncrewed lunar landings means
- 5:47that the FAA's foot dragging could stretch these critical
- 5:50months into very critical years. And to navigate these hurdles,
- 5:55SpaceX and its industry counterparts will have to
- 5:58advocate not just for the individual ventures, but for a
- 6:01more streamlined regulatory framework that accommodates the
- 6:04unique demands and potentials of commercial spaceflight.
- 6:09Now, this is not just about reaching Mars or going back to
- 6:11the moon. It's about shaping the rules and
- 6:13the expectations that will govern humanity's access to
- 6:16space for decades to come, not just for astronauts, but for
- 6:19normal people like you and me. And as SpaceX deals with an ever
- 6:24changing timetable subject to the whims of regulatory bodies
- 6:27and the realities of technological innovation, they
- 6:30find themselves in a challenging yet pivotal position.
