- 1:08Speaker 3: Thanks for having me, Kiki. My name is Lilian Sue.
- 1:12Speaker 3: I am a multi A board winning author and PR coach.
- 1:17Speaker 3: So what I help folks to do establish entrepreneurs and authors.
- 1:22Speaker 3: I help them leverage their authentic stories to increase cash
- 1:27Speaker 3: flow by getting on stages and getting featured in interviews.
- 1:32Speaker 3: So basically building those powerful relationships and building trust with audiences.
- 1:39Speaker 3: By getting on these platforms to share their stories and
- 1:44Speaker 3: bring in more clients, bring in more book sales, whatever
- 1:48Speaker 3: it is that they want to do. I help them
- 1:52Speaker 3: build the strategy to get there.
- 1:55Speaker 2: I love it, I love you. Thank you for being here.
- 1:58Speaker 2: That is amazing that you talk about that because I'm
- 2:00Speaker 2: an author as well, and so let's talk about you know,
- 2:04Speaker 2: how did you become an author? Let's first and foremost
- 2:07Speaker 2: talk about that, Like, when did you publish your first book?
- 2:10Speaker 2: How did you know that writing was a part of
- 2:13Speaker 2: your purpose.
- 2:15Speaker 3: Yeah, let me go back a little bit and just say, like,
- 2:18Speaker 3: the first book that I published was published just over
- 2:22Speaker 3: a year ago now, but I've actually been into creative
- 2:28Speaker 3: storytelling my entire life. So like, initially I was writing
- 2:34Speaker 3: a lot of stories, doing a lot of reading as
- 2:36Speaker 3: a kid, and I wanted my first career choice was
- 2:39Speaker 3: to be a novelist, right, And this was pre self
- 2:44Speaker 3: publishing and everything. And my big brother came to me
- 2:47Speaker 3: and he was like, you're gonna be starving waiting for publishers. Yeah, right,
- 2:54Speaker 3: So he was like, I think you got to figure
- 2:58Speaker 3: out some other way to do what it is that
- 3:01Speaker 3: you want to do. And that's kind of how I
- 3:05Speaker 3: got into running my own business because I thought, you know,
- 3:08Speaker 3: I've always loved the marketing side, the storytelling on the
- 3:11Speaker 3: marketing side, how about I build a business helping entrepreneurs
- 3:17Speaker 3: get their stories out there. So, like that was social
- 3:22Speaker 3: media and copywriting initially, like doing it for folks websites
- 3:27Speaker 3: and their email campaigns and that kind of stuff. And
- 3:32Speaker 3: the PR side didn't come in until later because I
- 3:35Speaker 3: had people asking me, hey, is that something you would do?
- 3:41Speaker 3: You know, because I have this news that I want
- 3:43Speaker 3: to share and I wanted to see if that was
- 3:45Speaker 3: something you'd be interested in doing. So I added that
- 3:49Speaker 3: to my business and ended up focusing on that exclusively,
- 3:53Speaker 3: right and this entire time throughout all that I'm still
- 3:57Speaker 3: writing for myself. I'm writing a lot of fans, I'm
- 4:00Speaker 3: writing poetry, whatever. And then as I started working with
- 4:05Speaker 3: more clients on the coaching side, I had more folks
- 4:10Speaker 3: coming to me and saying, hey, would you write a book?
- 4:14Speaker 3: Do you have a book? Because like I appreciate following you,
- 4:18Speaker 3: I'm learning a lot, but I want to have something
- 4:21Speaker 3: that I can actually hold in my hand and flip through,
- 4:25Speaker 3: you know, like refer back to if I forget things
- 4:28Speaker 3: and all that. So I thought, Okay, let me try it.
- 4:32Speaker 3: I've been working with a lot of authors, let me
- 4:34Speaker 3: try it, let me see if it's gonna work. And
- 4:36Speaker 3: the really funny thing is I was working on the
- 4:40Speaker 3: pr book from Christmas of twenty two to Christmas to
- 4:47Speaker 3: twenty three, and at the same time I was working
- 4:52Speaker 3: on my first adult contemporary romance, Nice. So the plan
- 4:56Speaker 3: was I was like, Okay, I'm gonna publish the p
- 5:00Speaker 3: Our book first, because that's the professional one, that's the
- 5:03Speaker 3: business one. I'm going to self publish it. And what
- 5:07Speaker 3: I learned from publishing this book, I'm going to take
- 5:11Speaker 3: into publishing my fiction. So you know, last year I
- 5:16Speaker 3: went through working with an editor, working with the cover
- 5:19Speaker 3: designer who also formatted The Bad Boy, and I published
- 5:23Speaker 3: it and like it's gone really really well. Like you know,
- 5:28Speaker 3: I wrote it specifically for authors, for entrepreneurs, for small
- 5:34Speaker 3: business owners and basically said, hey, you know that giant
- 5:37Speaker 3: thing where you always see like celebrities or big companies
- 5:42Speaker 3: in the media, you can do it for your business too,
- 5:46Speaker 3: And here's how, right right, And I've had entrepreneurs that
- 5:50Speaker 3: have bought the book coming back to me and saying
- 5:54Speaker 3: I'm going through it a second time and I'm taking
- 5:57Speaker 3: notes to really see how I can apply what you've
- 6:02Speaker 3: taught me in this book specifically to my business, because
- 6:06Speaker 3: I wrote it in a way of like, Okay, as
- 6:08Speaker 3: a small business owner, if I've never done any of
- 6:12Speaker 3: this stuff before, right, what would I need to know
- 6:17Speaker 3: to make it work? Like, in order to even book
- 6:20Speaker 3: my first interview, what's all the steps I need to
- 6:24Speaker 3: have in place first in order to do that? And
- 6:28Speaker 3: I also wrote a specific section on Hey, so if
- 6:34Speaker 3: you're looking to send like a pitch to a journalist,
- 6:38Speaker 3: here's all the stuff you shouldn't do. And all of
- 6:41Speaker 3: this has come from journalists themselves saying like, yeah, don't
- 6:45Speaker 3: do that. I'm going to delete your email immediately. Right.
- 6:49Speaker 3: So I put all of that stuff in the book too,
- 6:51Speaker 3: because I'm like, it's important to show them in addition
- 6:54Speaker 3: to what to do what not to do?
- 6:58Speaker 2: You know, absolutely, And when I first started, it was
- 7:04Speaker 2: just beginning the phase of the self publishing, and I
- 7:09Speaker 2: went in blind. You know, I was just fortunate enough
- 7:12Speaker 2: to have a couple of people who are authors that
- 7:14Speaker 2: published and say, hey, here's some steps that you could take.
- 7:17Speaker 2: But for the most part, I got scammed because I
- 7:20Speaker 2: did third party publishing and paid for my book to
- 7:23Speaker 2: be edited and formatting and the things like that, and
- 7:26Speaker 2: got my book back and it was flawed. And I
- 7:30Speaker 2: took that as a sign to take a step back,
- 7:33Speaker 2: do more research, figure out some more things so that
- 7:36Speaker 2: I can help somebody else not go through what I
- 7:38Speaker 2: went through. And so let's talk about the importance of
- 7:42Speaker 2: paying it forward, like taking all the things that happened
- 7:45Speaker 2: to you to give it to someone else so they
- 7:47Speaker 2: won't have to go through that. How important is it
- 7:49Speaker 2: as far as like growing a brand, business or whatever.
- 7:53Speaker 3: Oh absolutely, you know, and like as a woman of
- 7:58Speaker 3: color as well. Right, if there's one thing I've noticed
- 8:02Speaker 3: especially lately, like I reached out to some other like
- 8:07Speaker 3: fellow Asian women who are in business and stuff, and
- 8:10Speaker 3: I'm like, where's our people at? Because I walk into
- 8:13Speaker 3: a room for a networking thing or sign I signed
- 8:17Speaker 3: in on Zoom and I'm like, I'm the only one
- 8:19Speaker 3: that looks like me, and you can't tell me that
- 8:22Speaker 3: I'm the only one that's in business because I know
- 8:26Speaker 3: I'm not right, right, So it also became my mission
- 8:29Speaker 3: to be like, you know, figure out why aren't more
- 8:34Speaker 3: of us getting out there and sharing our stories. Right,
- 8:38Speaker 3: And I realized that so much of it is trauma
- 8:43Speaker 3: because for so many of us that were you know,
- 8:45Speaker 3: I'm I'm a kid of Boomer immigrants, first generation Canadian, right.
- 8:50Speaker 3: So many of us were taught whatever happens at home
- 8:54Speaker 3: stays at home, and you don't tell nobody that's your
- 8:58Speaker 3: family honor. You place that above everybody else. Right. And
- 9:02Speaker 3: I was coming out of a speaking gig one time,
- 9:06Speaker 3: and I had a young woman pulled me aside. She
- 9:08Speaker 3: was also Chinese, and she said to me, she said,
- 9:11Speaker 3: what you said about mindset and being able to deal
- 9:17Speaker 3: with your fear and your anxiety and to not let
- 9:20Speaker 3: that hold you back from getting out there and telling
- 9:23Speaker 3: your story. She says, how do I run the business
- 9:26Speaker 3: that I want to run and live the life that
- 9:30Speaker 3: I want to live when I'm still living in my trauma?
- 9:33Speaker 3: She says, I'm still living at home. So I said
- 9:36Speaker 3: to her, I'm like, I'm not a clinical counselor, and
- 9:40Speaker 3: I don't call myself a mindset coach, but I will
- 9:42Speaker 3: tell you what worked for me. I said, I invested
- 9:45Speaker 3: in that kind of help first and foremost, and second,
- 9:49Speaker 3: when I could I got out of there. So it's
- 9:52Speaker 3: one of those things where it's like, it is my
- 9:54Speaker 3: mission to really empower people of color, the women of color,
- 10:01Speaker 3: especially to get out there to share their stories and
- 10:03Speaker 3: show them that hey, there's no shame in this. There
- 10:07Speaker 3: is an opportunity for you to inspire other people, and
- 10:11Speaker 3: there is an opportunity. There are platforms out there, podcasts,
- 10:16Speaker 3: speaking gigs, whatever it is that you're looking for, where
- 10:21Speaker 3: you'll reach other women of color just like you who
- 10:25Speaker 3: want to be like, hey, I want to break out
- 10:28Speaker 3: of this box. I can't. I can't live the life
- 10:32Speaker 3: that's been dictated to me anymore because it's killing me.
- 10:36Speaker 3: And I knew very early on, like for me, just
- 10:39Speaker 3: running a business period made me the black sheep, made
- 10:44Speaker 3: me the rebel, made me the escapegoat because nobody got
- 10:48Speaker 3: what I was doing. I got no support. So I
- 10:51Speaker 3: was like, my life's work has been I got to
- 10:56Speaker 3: figure this out and I got to find my people.
- 11:00Speaker 3: So doing what I do in empowering so many women
- 11:05Speaker 3: to get out there and share their stories and to
- 11:08Speaker 3: have that courage and just be like, hey, you know what,
- 11:11Speaker 3: it's my story and there's no shame in it I'm
- 11:15Speaker 3: doing it because for other people, because I had to
- 11:18Speaker 3: do it for myself. I had that come to Jesus
- 11:22Speaker 3: moment where I was like, wait a minute, if I'm
- 11:25Speaker 3: gonna be coaching folks to do this, I can't show
- 11:29Speaker 3: them how to do it if I won't walk the
- 11:32Speaker 3: walk myself. So what's blocking me from getting out there
- 11:38Speaker 3: and sharing my story on how I got here and
- 11:43Speaker 3: the decisions that I made and the things that I
- 11:46Speaker 3: went through where it was like, hey, I knew from
- 11:49Speaker 3: a like I was what like three four years old
- 11:52Speaker 3: when I said I gotta find my people.
- 11:56Speaker 2: Mm hm, absolutely, And I love that. And I have
- 12:02Speaker 2: a certification in mindset and it starts with your mind.
- 12:06Speaker 2: You have to decide that I'm going to get out
- 12:09Speaker 2: of my own way and take the steps, and that
- 12:12Speaker 2: does mean that you have to invest in that help
- 12:15Speaker 2: because if you're stuck, you will never take those steps
- 12:19Speaker 2: and get in those spaces that your people are waiting
- 12:22Speaker 2: for you. Because everybody's story will be heard by somebody,
- 12:26Speaker 2: but you want to make sure that is being told
- 12:29Speaker 2: unheard by the people that need it most, because now
- 12:32Speaker 2: everybody's going to identify or resonate with your story. And
- 12:38Speaker 2: I realized that growing up in where I'm from, because
- 12:41Speaker 2: I'm in a small town in Louisiana and we didn't
- 12:44Speaker 2: have a lot of people of color in the bookstores
- 12:46Speaker 2: and libraries and stuff that I had at school. So
- 12:50Speaker 2: when I first saw Terry McMillan's book in my library,
- 12:54Speaker 2: I was like, Oh, wow, we are here, we exist,
- 12:58Speaker 2: And I just fell in love with storytelling even more
- 13:02Speaker 2: because I learned to read at three and my aunt
- 13:05Speaker 2: used to take us to the library. So I've always
- 13:07Speaker 2: had a thing with words, and becoming an author was
- 13:10Speaker 2: in my bones, in my bones, but I always shot
- 13:14Speaker 2: away from it because people always wanted me to help
- 13:18Speaker 2: them with their trauma, like writing a poem for a
- 13:20Speaker 2: funeral or you know, a certain event that they were
- 13:24Speaker 2: going through. So I was like, Okay, is this what
- 13:26Speaker 2: I'm supposed to be doing? Are my words supposed to
- 13:29Speaker 2: only help someone go through their grief? And so, you know,
- 13:34Speaker 2: when I started to write, like my first book, I
- 13:37Speaker 2: was like, oh wow, this is something that, yes, I
- 13:42Speaker 2: can see myself doing. So just to hear you speak
- 13:45Speaker 2: passionately about why you started your business and why you
- 13:49Speaker 2: wrote the book and why you want to make sure
- 13:51Speaker 2: that people of color, Especially women that look like yourself
- 13:54Speaker 2: who you know are there but you don't see them
- 13:56Speaker 2: in the space, come forth to use their voices. Love that.
- 14:01Speaker 2: And you know, what is something else besides making sure
- 14:05Speaker 2: that you see people who look like you in those
- 14:08Speaker 2: spaces to share their stories. What is something that you
- 14:11Speaker 2: do daily to make sure that you keep that mindset
- 14:16Speaker 2: of you know, abundance or prosperity or you know, hipping
- 14:20Speaker 2: the next person alone? What is something that you do
- 14:22Speaker 2: to make sure that you stay grounded in that way?
- 14:26Speaker 3: I level with you, Kiki. In my line of work,
- 14:30Speaker 3: there's very very few people that do what I do.
- 14:35Speaker 3: So most of my colleagues have what I call the
- 14:38Speaker 3: agency model, Right, they hire a bunch of people. These
- 14:42Speaker 3: folks take care of the clients and everything. They bring
- 14:45Speaker 3: in more business and everybody eats. And I decided a
- 14:49Speaker 3: long time ago, I said, you know, I can't handle
- 14:53Speaker 3: that pressure of being like I'm taking food off my employees.
- 14:58Speaker 3: Plates can't handle it. If if we got money, troubles
- 15:02Speaker 3: and stuff like that, it's just gonna be me that's affected.
- 15:05Speaker 3: I don't want anybody else to have to deal with
- 15:08Speaker 3: that and everything. And so when I'm going through it,
- 15:12Speaker 3: and I feel stuck and I feel like, man, I'm
- 15:14Speaker 3: not where I should be. I always turned to like
- 15:19Speaker 3: the meditation, I turned to the self hypnosis. And I
- 15:23Speaker 3: remind myself because one of the things like my cousin
- 15:28Speaker 3: and I are very very close, and she and I
- 15:31Speaker 3: have had this conversation a lot over the year. She
- 15:34Speaker 3: used to ask me, She said, Liol, do you want
- 15:37Speaker 3: to live this other person's life? Like you see like
- 15:42Speaker 3: they're fine, paying their bills, they bought a house, they're
- 15:45Speaker 3: doing the international vacation. She said, do you want to
- 15:49Speaker 3: live their life and have that job and do everything else?
- 15:53Speaker 3: And I said no. So she looked at me and
- 15:56Speaker 3: she said, if the answer is no, why you compare.
- 16:01Speaker 3: So that's something that I remind myself of on the
- 16:05Speaker 3: daily that it's like, hey, very few people do what
- 16:08Speaker 3: I do. So knowing that I didn't have somebody to
- 16:14Speaker 3: model my business after, right, I didn't have somebody to
- 16:19Speaker 3: like be like, hey can I intern with you? Or
- 16:23Speaker 3: could I talk to you, or like have somebody as
- 16:25Speaker 3: a mentor on like how do I build a business
- 16:28Speaker 3: doing this? Nobody? So so much of what I do
- 16:33Speaker 3: has been like, hey, how do I figure out this?
- 16:38Speaker 3: With help, knowing that even the people that I work with,
- 16:41Speaker 3: like my own coaches, they've never seen anybody like me, right,
- 16:47Speaker 3: so we're all trying to figure it out together. So
- 16:49Speaker 3: I always remind myself when I do like my morning
- 16:53Speaker 3: meditation or I do that self hypnosis, that hey, you
- 16:56Speaker 3: are where you want to be, and you don't want
- 17:00Speaker 3: to go back to that place where you're working with
- 17:03Speaker 3: all the wrong types of projects and the wrong people
- 17:07Speaker 3: because you're worried about where the money's coming from. You
- 17:10Speaker 3: don't want to go back there. So what is meant
- 17:13Speaker 3: for me will be mine when I'm ready for it.
- 17:20Speaker 2: Wow. I love that what is meant for me will
- 17:25Speaker 2: be mine when I'm ready for it. And you have
- 17:27Speaker 2: to go. You have to be hungry when when you
- 17:30Speaker 2: are growing a business, you have to stay hungry because
- 17:33Speaker 2: otherwise you won't eat.
- 17:35Speaker 3: And you have to know that not.
- 17:36Speaker 2: Everybody can come to the table. It's okay to build tables,
- 17:39Speaker 2: it's okay to go sample here and there, but you
- 17:42Speaker 2: have to make sure that the meal that you're feeding
- 17:45Speaker 2: other people at your table is going to nourish their soul,
- 17:49Speaker 2: their mind, and then everything else will flow, especially when
- 17:54Speaker 2: your mind is there because without that mind that mindset,
- 17:58Speaker 2: you know, we become things that we hold on to subconsciously,
- 18:02Speaker 2: or we allow the nay sales to get in our
- 18:04Speaker 2: ear and feed us all kind of gibberish that doesn't
- 18:06Speaker 2: apply to us, because it's projecting you feel that way
- 18:10Speaker 2: about you, and you're trying to make me stop doing
- 18:12Speaker 2: what I know that I'm called to do. And that's
- 18:14Speaker 2: working because you intimidated that I'm going to be further
- 18:18Speaker 2: along than you.
- 18:20Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 18:21Speaker 2: Oh look, I'm so happy that you are here, Lilian,
- 18:25Speaker 2: this has been an amazing conversation. And so I want
- 18:28Speaker 2: to talk a little bit about the book. Let's tell
- 18:30Speaker 2: the people the name, how they can support and get
- 18:33Speaker 2: it and everything like that. I see it in the background,
- 18:35Speaker 2: so I know you're you know, you want to talk
- 18:38Speaker 2: about this in first because it's the pr side, and
- 18:40Speaker 2: then we'll talk about your contemporary romance that you have coming.
- 18:44Speaker 2: So just talk about the book. Let's talk about it.
- 18:47Speaker 3: Sure, it's called The Powerful Publicity Prescription. You can find
- 18:53Speaker 3: it on my website just in Retrospect Writingservices dot com,
- 18:58Speaker 3: slash books, or you can grab it on Amazon. And
- 19:02Speaker 3: like I mentioned earlier, I wrote it specifically for the authors,
- 19:08Speaker 3: the filmmakers, the entrepreneurs, the small business owners, to really
- 19:11Speaker 3: understand what is PR, why it's powerful, and how they
- 19:16Speaker 3: can make it work for them. Right, So I wrote
- 19:20Speaker 3: this book not for every entrepreneur to become their own publicist,
- 19:25Speaker 3: but to gain a better understanding about what it is,
- 19:30Speaker 3: how it works, so they can advocate for themselves when
- 19:34Speaker 3: they do work with somebody, you know, they can make
- 19:38Speaker 3: better informed decisions about where my money's going, where my
- 19:43Speaker 3: time and energy is going, and is this actually the
- 19:46Speaker 3: right direction that I wanted to go because I've talked
- 19:50Speaker 3: to so many entrepreneurs and authors that were like, I
- 19:55Speaker 3: put down fifteen grand to work with somebody, and they
- 19:59Speaker 3: got they got me interviews, like I was on the
- 20:01Speaker 3: radio and everything, and they're like, I had fun, but
- 20:04Speaker 3: I got zero book sales out of it. And they said,
- 20:08Speaker 3: I think I got zero book sales out of it
- 20:11Speaker 3: because they never asked me what direction I wanted to
- 20:17Speaker 3: take it, and I didn't feel confident enough to tell them, hey,
- 20:23Speaker 3: can we do this instead? So with this book, I
- 20:28Speaker 3: really wanted to show them like, this is what PR is,
- 20:35Speaker 3: these are the different ways you can use it, and
- 20:37Speaker 3: this is how you build a campaign, Like even whether
- 20:41Speaker 3: you're an author, a filmmaker, a business owner, this is
- 20:44Speaker 3: what you need to put into place before you send
- 20:49Speaker 3: that first email to say to somebody, this is my story.
- 20:55Speaker 3: I understand you're looking for interviews for your podcast. For
- 20:59Speaker 3: that matter, you got to know who do I actually
- 21:03Speaker 3: want to send these emails out? Too? Right? You got
- 21:06Speaker 3: to know what your story is, what are you going
- 21:09Speaker 3: to tell people? You got to know what your goals are,
- 21:12Speaker 3: like what do you actually want to do with this? Ultimately? Right?
- 21:15Speaker 3: Like are you selling tickets to an event? Are you
- 21:19Speaker 3: selling books? Are you wanting to bring in more clients
- 21:22Speaker 3: into your program? And then you got to look at
- 21:26Speaker 3: it the short term and the long term picture. Like
- 21:28Speaker 3: if the long term picture is I want to be
- 21:31Speaker 3: on stage delivering a keynote at an international conference, but
- 21:36Speaker 3: I've never had a speaking gig, how do you work
- 21:40Speaker 3: your way up to that? Right? And once you know
- 21:44Speaker 3: what your goals are, then you have an idea of
- 21:47Speaker 3: like who's your audience, Who are your people and where
- 21:51Speaker 3: are they hanging out? Right? Like what events are they
- 21:53Speaker 3: going to? What podcasts are they listening to? What are
- 21:57Speaker 3: they reading? What websites are they following, where are they
- 22:01Speaker 3: getting their info about what you do in your industry,
- 22:07Speaker 3: because that's where you need to be featured. Because what
- 22:11Speaker 3: you want to do is you want to build these
- 22:13Speaker 3: great relationships, right the podcast hosts with the journalists, with
- 22:19Speaker 3: the folks running the websites, so that they'll feature you,
- 22:23Speaker 3: and you can use that relationship you've built with them
- 22:26Speaker 3: as a springboard to get in front of their audiences
- 22:30Speaker 3: and be like, this is who I am, this is
- 22:33Speaker 3: why I do what I do, and this is how
- 22:37Speaker 3: like why it matters to you like that. That's the
- 22:39Speaker 3: other part of it. You got to figure out that
- 22:42Speaker 3: you know, yes, you're staring, you're sharing your story, but
- 22:46Speaker 3: it's not just about you. It's about how somebody can
- 22:51Speaker 3: learn from you, Right, Like what is it about your
- 22:55Speaker 3: story that's gonna make them sit up and go, Hey,
- 22:58Speaker 3: I gotta buy Kiki's book or hey, I got to
- 23:00Speaker 3: sign up for her event the next time she's speaking. Right,
- 23:04Speaker 3: that is what the book shows you how to do.
- 23:08Speaker 3: And then at the end of it, it's like, Okay,
- 23:13Speaker 3: you got that interview, it's posted online. Now what Because
- 23:18Speaker 3: if you don't promote it properly, it's gonna be like,
- 23:22Speaker 3: you didn't do it at all. And I've had people
- 23:25Speaker 3: come to me and say, like, I got a bunch
- 23:28Speaker 3: and nothing happened. So I asked them, I'm like, well,
- 23:30Speaker 3: did you promote it? Did the podcast promote it? Did
- 23:34Speaker 3: the person like your publicists promoted And they said no
- 23:37Speaker 3: for all three And I'm like, well, why did you
- 23:39Speaker 3: do it?
- 23:39Speaker 2: Then?
- 23:41Speaker 3: You know? So the book really outlines for them the
- 23:45Speaker 3: importance of all of these different elements and how to
- 23:50Speaker 3: do it, and also some of the tools that you
- 23:53Speaker 3: can use to save some time, save some energy, and
- 23:58Speaker 3: really kind of streamline the problem because so many people
- 24:01Speaker 3: come to me and say like, ah, you know, I
- 24:03Speaker 3: don't know how to find the right platforms because there's
- 24:07Speaker 3: millions out there. Yeah, how do I start? Right? So
- 24:11Speaker 3: I said, if you have no experience with this whatsoever,
- 24:15Speaker 3: number one thing you should be doing is going to
- 24:17Speaker 3: your own network, because these are folks that are in
- 24:20Speaker 3: the same line of work you are. Even if they've
- 24:24Speaker 3: never been on a podcast interview, chances are they know
- 24:27Speaker 3: somebody who has, or they know somebody who has a
- 24:29Speaker 3: podcast that you know you could pitch to, or hey,
- 24:33Speaker 3: who knows, maybe they even have their own podcasts. That
- 24:37Speaker 3: you could appear on and just take some time getting comfortable. Right.
- 24:43Speaker 3: It is one of those things where I say to
- 24:45Speaker 3: my clients, like, the more practice you have doing this,
- 24:48Speaker 3: the easier it gets, and the more fun you have
- 24:52Speaker 3: with it too, because you're just having a conversation with people. Right.
- 24:56Speaker 3: So the book is really full of all of these
- 24:59Speaker 3: kinds of actionable strategies, practical tips. It's got case studies
- 25:05Speaker 3: and success stories in there from my own clients that
- 25:08Speaker 3: have worked with me for years and the results that
- 25:11Speaker 3: they've kind of been able to get because of our
- 25:16Speaker 3: result of working together. And I even kind of break
- 25:18Speaker 3: it down and be like, this is the subject line
- 25:21Speaker 3: we use for this campaign, and this was the result
- 25:25Speaker 3: of it for my clients, you know, to really kind
- 25:29Speaker 3: of show people that it's like, hey, it's not just
- 25:32Speaker 3: the celebrities and the big companies that are getting featured.
- 25:36Speaker 3: It's folks that have businesses just like you that are
- 25:39Speaker 3: getting fantastic press, that are winning awards, they're getting sales,
- 25:45Speaker 3: they're getting global distribution, and people know their names for
- 25:50Speaker 3: their projects because they've gotten out there to share their stories.
- 25:54Speaker 2: Absolutely, and I love that and it is so true
- 25:57Speaker 2: because when I started the podcast, I didn't know what
- 25:59Speaker 2: I was doing, sort of doing COVID because I couldn't
- 26:02Speaker 2: see my friends, we couldn't go outside of the house.
- 26:05Speaker 2: I was like, Okay, I'm gonna go live on Instagram
- 26:07Speaker 2: every Monday night. And the response that I got was
- 26:10Speaker 2: so amazing. Because I put myself out there. I've always
- 26:14Speaker 2: wanted to be behind the scenes because, believe it or not,
- 26:17Speaker 2: I'm an introvert, A big introvert. When I tell people that,
- 26:20Speaker 2: they laugh and I'm like, it is true. I have
- 26:23Speaker 2: to get to know you and get comfortable for me
- 26:25Speaker 2: to open myself up. And the fact that I did that,
- 26:29Speaker 2: that just opened up the door for starting my podcast,
- 26:31Speaker 2: which led to the magazine. So I am just enjoying
- 26:35Speaker 2: the journey. I can tell that you are having fun
- 26:37Speaker 2: on your journey as well. We connected on social media.
- 26:40Speaker 2: I'm so glad that we did see amazing things that
- 26:44Speaker 2: you're doing, So keep doing that.
- 26:46Speaker 3: I see you.
- 26:48Speaker 2: I'm proud of you, and I know that great things
- 26:50Speaker 2: are going to continue to happen. I would definitely be
- 26:53Speaker 2: buying a book because I love to support people who
- 26:55Speaker 2: are out there trying to make a difference. In this book,
- 26:58Speaker 2: I believe that it's a game changer, So you guys,
- 27:00Speaker 2: make sure that you go over to her website. That
- 27:04Speaker 2: information will be included in the show notes as well
- 27:07Speaker 2: as on Amazon. The Powerful Publicity Prescription is the name
- 27:14Speaker 2: of the book, The Powerful Publicity Prescription by Lilian Sue
- 27:21Speaker 2: and make sure y'all go and get it. But I
- 27:23Speaker 2: wanted to talk about something real quick about PR coaching.
- 27:28Speaker 2: What is the importance of public relations in growing a
- 27:32Speaker 2: successful brand or business in your professional opinion, because a
- 27:37Speaker 2: lot of people don't understand that you need to have
- 27:40Speaker 2: some type of publicity to grow.
- 27:46Speaker 3: I tell you what public relations does that nothing else does.
- 27:52Speaker 3: Doesn't matter how active you are on social doesn't matter
- 27:55Speaker 3: how many emails you sent out, doesn't matter how many
- 27:59Speaker 3: ads you're running online. PR is based on storytelling and
- 28:06Speaker 3: building relationships. Why is that powerful Because all of the
- 28:12Speaker 3: other disciplines that I mentioned that adds the email, the
- 28:16Speaker 3: social media, all of those depend on content coming from you, right,
- 28:25Speaker 3: depends on you sharing blog posts, sharing like an email
- 28:32Speaker 3: about how your book is on sale, sharing about your event.
- 28:36Speaker 3: It all comes from you. You can only grow your
- 28:41Speaker 3: audience so big online when all they're hearing from is
- 28:45Speaker 3: your voice. Right. But with pr the moment you get
- 28:51Speaker 3: on someone else's platform, a couple of things happen. Number One,
- 28:57Speaker 3: you're sharing your story with an entire different audience that
- 29:02Speaker 3: you didn't have access to previously. Right. Number two, this
- 29:08Speaker 3: is content that you're not creating for yourself. It's coming
- 29:13Speaker 3: from somebody else on your behalf. And this somebody else
- 29:19Speaker 3: has spent months, if not years, building their own reputation
- 29:27Speaker 3: by delivering the stories of fantastic entrepreneurs to their audiences. Right.
- 29:35Speaker 3: They got skin in the game too by featuring you.
- 29:39Speaker 3: That's their reputation on the line too by featuring you.
- 29:43Speaker 3: But because that content comes from them, not only is
- 29:50Speaker 3: it telling your audience, Hey, it's not just so and
- 29:55Speaker 3: so promoting their own stuff anymore. They must you know
- 30:00Speaker 3: what they're talking about, because they're featured on these other platforms. Right.
- 30:04Speaker 3: And on top of that, this is content that doesn't
- 30:11Speaker 3: live on social media. You can keep sharing it for
- 30:15Speaker 3: years to come, Like I've got podcasts I did years
- 30:18Speaker 3: ago that people still come to me and say, hey,
- 30:22Speaker 3: I found out about you because of the chat that
- 30:25Speaker 3: you had with so and so that I found on YouTube.
- 30:29Speaker 3: And I'm sitting here going like man, that was three
- 30:31Speaker 3: years ago, but because it's still up right, that brings
- 30:37Speaker 3: in the search volume, that allows people to see who
- 30:40Speaker 3: you are, and most importantly, it allows them to hear
- 30:47Speaker 3: directly from you in a way that isn't just about
- 30:51Speaker 3: advertising or promoting your business. It's about learning who you
- 30:57Speaker 3: are behind the business. I say this to entrepreneurs all
- 31:02Speaker 3: the time, whether I'm doing a speaking gig or it's
- 31:05Speaker 3: my own clients, and I said, you know, I hate
- 31:07Speaker 3: to tell you this, but what you do almost doesn't matter.
- 31:13Speaker 3: Why because there's thousands of people that do what you do. Yeah,
- 31:18Speaker 3: stop hiding behind what you do, because if it's a
- 31:24Speaker 3: choice between you and somebody else right next door who
- 31:30Speaker 3: does exactly the same thing as you do, but they're
- 31:34Speaker 3: willing to come out and talk about Hey, before I
- 31:38Speaker 3: started this business, I spent five years living in my car,
- 31:42Speaker 3: So I understand what it means for my clients to
- 31:45Speaker 3: be at the poverty level. They're gonna go with the
- 31:49Speaker 3: guy sharing his story, right because they know he's being authentic,
- 31:54Speaker 3: they know he's being real, and they know that, Hey,
- 31:58Speaker 3: this resonates with me because they understand what I'm going through.
- 32:02Speaker 3: And if they understand what I'm going through. That must
- 32:06Speaker 3: mean they understand how to get me out of it.
- 32:10Speaker 3: That's going to be something that's gonna separate you from
- 32:15Speaker 3: everybody else that does exactly the same thing. So stop.
- 32:19Speaker 3: Like I say this to my clients all the time,
- 32:21Speaker 3: I said, stop hiding behind what you do or the
- 32:25Speaker 3: book that you're releasing. It's like, yeah, the book is
- 32:29Speaker 3: why we're going to a podcast that focuses on authors
- 32:36Speaker 3: to talk about writing and to talk about your book
- 32:39Speaker 3: and everything. But ultimately they want to know why. They
- 32:44Speaker 3: want to know the story behind, why'd you write this thing?
- 32:46Speaker 3: Why do you ultimately decide to publish it? What do
- 32:49Speaker 3: you want people to get out of it? That's what
- 32:52Speaker 3: people really want to hear, because if it was just
- 32:56Speaker 3: about the book, they could pick it up and read it, right,
- 33:01Speaker 3: But they're not gonna do that when there's thousands of
- 33:05Speaker 3: other books out there talking about the same stuff and
- 33:10Speaker 3: they got limited time, energy, attention span, and money. Right,
- 33:16Speaker 3: if they see a bunch of books that are focused
- 33:18Speaker 3: on the same subject matter, who do you think they're
- 33:21Speaker 3: whose book they're gonna pick up. They're gonna pick up
- 33:24Speaker 3: the person that they know because they know them from
- 33:29Speaker 3: hearing their story on podcasts, on other interview platforms. Maybe
- 33:34Speaker 3: they attended to speak and get that's the power of
- 33:38Speaker 3: it that you can't replicate with other forms of marketing.
- 33:43Speaker 1: Mhm.
- 33:44Speaker 3: I love that.
- 33:45Speaker 2: I love that, and thank you for sharing. And I
- 33:48Speaker 2: know that this is happen me and I know that
- 33:51Speaker 2: it's resonating with some of the some of the listeners
- 33:53Speaker 2: here today. So before we get out of here, Lilian
- 33:57Speaker 2: uh oh, can you tell everybody how they can follow
- 34:02Speaker 2: you on social media? Where do you hang out? If
- 34:05Speaker 2: they were wanting to work with you, how can they
- 34:07Speaker 2: reach out to you and do so?
- 34:10Speaker 3: Yeah, you can follow me on Instagram Lillian Sue pr coach.
- 34:16Speaker 3: I'm on there every day, you know, wapping my people up,
- 34:22Speaker 3: sharing practical strategies and stuff, talking about the importance of
- 34:26Speaker 3: visibility and storytelling. So you can follow me on Instagram.
- 34:31Speaker 3: You can find me. I'm doing more on Facebook. It's
- 34:36Speaker 3: Lilian dot Sue ninety eight is my profile. You can
- 34:39Speaker 3: follow me on there. I'm gonna have some pretty exciting
- 34:43Speaker 3: things coming down the pipe with some new offers and
- 34:48Speaker 3: stuff like that, so keep an eye out for that.
- 34:51Speaker 3: And you can also find me on my website in
- 34:54Speaker 3: retrospect Writingservices dot com, send me an email, book, a
- 34:59Speaker 3: call you can and send me all the questions that
- 35:01Speaker 3: you have about PR and how to make it work.
- 35:05Speaker 3: This is a discipline that I really believe everybody should
- 35:10Speaker 3: be incorporating into their business. And you can make your work.
- 35:15Speaker 3: It's just a matter of figuring out what do you
- 35:19Speaker 3: want to do with it, what's the story you want
- 35:22Speaker 3: to share? And how are you going to get in
- 35:24Speaker 3: front of the audiences, Because there's always a way.
- 35:29Speaker 2: Right absolutely, you guys, all of her information would be
- 35:33Speaker 2: in the show notes, so there's no excuse. See if
- 35:35Speaker 2: it's a white fit, especially if you have a brand
- 35:39Speaker 2: or a business that you are wishing to grow. It
- 35:42Speaker 2: is not easy, but it is doable. I am living
- 35:46Speaker 2: proof that it is. I just I just really believe
- 35:50Speaker 2: that it goes with mindset as well. You have to
- 35:52Speaker 2: make sure that you believe in yourself enough to take
- 35:55Speaker 2: yourself serious enough to invest so that other people will
- 35:59Speaker 2: see that you are in the work and take you seriously.
- 36:03Speaker 2: It will show as you grow, so make sure that
- 36:07Speaker 2: you keep nasiers out of your life. Make sure that
- 36:09Speaker 2: you're not one of those people who telling you that
- 36:11Speaker 2: you don't deserve it or you don't belong because the
- 36:14Speaker 2: negative self talk is very real. But before we get
- 36:19Speaker 2: out of here, Lilian, is it any words of encouragement
- 36:22Speaker 2: or inspiration that you would like to leave with our
- 36:24Speaker 2: listeners today?
- 36:27Speaker 3: I don't just say like, keep doing what you do.
- 36:31Speaker 3: There's so many of us out there that had to
- 36:34Speaker 3: carve out this, like forge our own paths and carve
- 36:38Speaker 3: out careers, that ain't have anybody support us because they
- 36:41Speaker 3: don't understand what it is that we're trying to build.
- 36:46Speaker 3: I say, keep going, you know, keep going, keep putting
- 36:49Speaker 3: yourself out there, keep building those relationships, because the most
- 36:54Speaker 3: rewarding thing is when you find your people. You know,
- 36:59Speaker 3: I feel like I am living proof of that because
- 37:02Speaker 3: I spent my life finding my people and to be
- 37:06Speaker 3: able to find them personally, professionally, and to have that
- 37:11Speaker 3: understanding that like, hey, I may not be doing exactly
- 37:16Speaker 3: the same thing you're doing, but I support you in
- 37:19Speaker 3: that is the most rewarding thing because that can lead
- 37:23Speaker 3: to collaborations. Right, you can blow it up into a
- 37:28Speaker 3: community so many different events. It transcends like geography. You
- 37:33Speaker 3: could be doing this with folks in Australia in the UK,
- 37:37Speaker 3: Like that's what it really means to build a community
- 37:42Speaker 3: and to help uplift each other and really step into
- 37:45Speaker 3: our fullest power. Right because especially as women of color,
- 37:49Speaker 3: I mean, this is our time. Don't be putting it off.
- 37:53Speaker 3: This is our time to rise and to get out
- 37:57Speaker 3: there and to not be a shape anymore about like
- 38:03Speaker 3: this is who I am and this is what I
- 38:05Speaker 3: stand for. The time is now, The time is now.
- 38:10Speaker 2: That was amazing, So Lilian, thank you so much for
- 38:14Speaker 2: being here today kicking it with me. It has been
- 38:16Speaker 2: a pleasure. Indeed, until next time, guys, thank you for
- 38:21Speaker 2: listening to another episode of Kicking It with Kiki, Life,
- 38:24Speaker 2: love and all that other shit. I am back every
- 38:26Speaker 2: Thursday with a new episode. You make sure that you
- 38:31Speaker 2: are living the dream that you are supposed to be living.
- 38:35Speaker 2: Make sure that you are being kind to yourself, giving
- 38:37Speaker 2: yourself some compassion, and most of all, give yourself grace
- 38:41Speaker 2: to know that you won't get it right every day,
- 38:43Speaker 2: but just make sure that when you're blessed to see
- 38:45Speaker 2: the next day, you try again and keep trying and
- 38:48Speaker 2: keep trying. So you, guys, be blessed until next time.
- 38:52Speaker 2: Purple hugs later.
- 38:56Speaker 1: Checking it with you don't want me doing them
