- 0:09All right, let's pray. Father, I want to thank
- 0:11you for your word. Thank you, Lord, for Mother's
- 0:14Day. Thank you for the gift of the mom. Just
- 0:16ask you would be with us as we go through your
- 0:18word, that the full counsel of your word is spoken
- 0:20and taught. Help us to rightly divide it. Help
- 0:23us to be good Bereans and to test all things.
- 0:25I pray that you are high and lifted up, glorified
- 0:27in all that we do, because you are the God. who
- 0:30gives life. We praise you and thank you in Jesus'
- 0:32name. Amen. So the kids have been given a task
- 0:37to count how many times the word she is said
- 0:41in today's sermon. Now, I probably won't. I'll
- 0:45have to go back and listen to it just to count
- 0:47how many she's I have said, but we're going to
- 0:50do that. So I hope you have your little pens
- 0:53ready and your little papers and your little
- 0:54pads. Proverbs 31. is where we're going. You're
- 0:58like, oh, really? You had to pick out of all
- 1:00of the scripture to compare a mom to, a woman
- 1:04to Proverbs 31. It's an impossible task. Well,
- 1:09actually, if you look at it from the perspective
- 1:12as I'm going to present it, it's actually not
- 1:14that impossible. The words of King Lemuel, an
- 1:18oracle that his mother taught him. Oh, wow. So
- 1:23this entire Scripture, Proverbs 31, is an oracle,
- 1:27a teaching, an instruction that was given to
- 1:31King Lamuel from his mom. So that kind of settles
- 1:36some things, doesn't it? What are you doing,
- 1:39my son? What are you doing, son of my womb? What
- 1:42are you doing, son of my vow? Do not give your
- 1:46strength to women, your ways to those who destroy
- 1:50kings. It is not. For kings, O Lemuel, it is
- 1:56not for kings to drink wine or for rulers to
- 2:00take strong drink, lest they drink and forget
- 2:03what has been decreed and pervert the rights
- 2:07of all the afflicted. Give strong drink to the
- 2:10one who is perishing and the wine to those in
- 2:14bitter distress. Let them drink and forget their
- 2:17poverty and remember their misery no more. Open
- 2:21your mouth. for the mute, for the rights of all
- 2:24who are destitute. Open your mouth, judge righteously,
- 2:30defend the rights of the poor and needy. An excellent
- 2:33wife who can find she is far more precious than
- 2:37jewels. The heart of her husband trusts in her,
- 2:41and he will have no lack. gain. She does him
- 2:46good and not harm all the days of her life. She
- 2:49seeks wool and flax and works with willing hands.
- 2:52She is like the ships of the merchant. She brings
- 2:55her food from afar. She rises while it is yet
- 2:58night and provides food for her household and
- 3:02portions for her maidens. She considers a field
- 3:06and buys it. With the fruit of her hands, she
- 3:09plants a vineyard. She dresses herself with strength
- 3:13and makes her arm strong. She perceives that
- 3:17her merchandise is profitable. Her lamp does
- 3:22not go out at night. She puts her hands to the
- 3:26staff and her hands hold to the spindle. She
- 3:30opens her hand to the poor and reaches out her
- 3:33hands to the needy. She is not afraid of snow.
- 3:38for her household, for all of her household are
- 3:41clothed in scarlet. She makes bed coverings for
- 3:46herself. Her clothing is fine linen and purple.
- 3:49Her husband is known in the gates, and he sits
- 3:52among the elders of the land. She makes linen
- 3:56garments and sells them. She delivers sashes
- 3:59to the merchants. Strength and dignity are her
- 4:02clothing, and she laughs at the time to come.
- 4:06She opens her mouth. with wisdom, and the teaching
- 4:10of kindness is on her tongue, and does not eat
- 4:13the bread of idleness. Her children rise and
- 4:15call her blessed, her husband also, and he praises
- 4:19her. Many women have done excellently, but you
- 4:22surpass them all. Charm is deceitful, and beauty
- 4:25is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to
- 4:28be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands,
- 4:32and let her works Praise her in the gates. First
- 4:35thing I want you to notice, gentlemen, is it
- 4:37has nothing to do with you. We'll handle that
- 4:40right in the beginning. You're like, ooh, that
- 4:43just like took the air right out of the balloon.
- 4:46A mother's heart for her kids. Listen to your
- 4:49mother's warnings. Wisdom is found in the lips
- 4:52of a godly mother, and failure to heed will bring
- 4:55calamity. Mom has a lot to say. I said this earlier.
- 5:01My wife's right 90 % of the time. You're like,
- 5:05what happened to the other 10 %? I can't make
- 5:07her perfect. But she's usually right. I know
- 5:13some of you women are saying, what happened to
- 5:1599 .9? At least there's one 10th left. Sorry,
- 5:20can't do that. I at least want to be right 10
- 5:22% of the time. Proverbs 1, 8 through 9 says this,
- 5:27the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.
- 5:30Fools despise wisdom and instruction. Hear, my
- 5:34son, your father's instruction, and forsake not
- 5:37your mother's teaching, for they are a graceful
- 5:41garland on your head and pendants for your neck.
- 5:46Proverbs 31, 1 through 9. I want you to notice
- 5:50a couple things here. It says the words of King
- 5:52Lemuel, an oracle that his mother taught. This
- 5:57is his mother's righteous and sound instruction,
- 6:01not his father's. His mother taught him. Notice
- 6:05these three things. What are you doing, my son?
- 6:09What are you doing, son of my womb? What are
- 6:12you doing, son of my vow? Every single son has
- 6:16brought terror and white hair to the mother's
- 6:19head. I'm telling you right now. This is sort
- 6:22of like this. I'll say it like South Jersey.
- 6:25What are you, stupid? Are you kidding me? I carried
- 6:30you for nine months and you don't listen to me
- 6:32ever. Oh, I gave it to the Lord and you're still
- 6:36not listening, you crazy nut. If you're Italian,
- 6:40you know exactly what I'm saying. I mean, it's
- 6:43three times. First, he reminds him, hey, you're
- 6:46my son. Second, I carried you for nine months
- 6:48and you still don't listen. And third, you made
- 6:51a promise and you're still not keeping your promises.
- 6:53That's exactly what it means. Do not give your
- 6:56strength to a woman and your ways to destroy
- 6:58kings. A mother's wisdom. Keep yourself chaste
- 7:02until you marry. Because when you give yourself
- 7:06away, it drains you of your life. That's what
- 7:09she's saying here. Why? She's a woman. She sees.
- 7:12She knows. She knows. Notice, she also tells
- 7:16him, oh, King Lamuel, it's not for kings to drink
- 7:19wine and for rulers to have strong drink. In
- 7:22other words, how many moms have begged their
- 7:26kids not to get drunk or become an alcoholic
- 7:28or get addicted to drugs? It's going to kill
- 7:30you. And not only does it kill you, it perverts,
- 7:35it causes you to forget the law that's there
- 7:38to protect you. And it perverts and affects the
- 7:42rights of those around you. That's what she's
- 7:44saying here. How do I, why do I know this? Because
- 7:47my mom did the same thing with my brother who
- 7:49died from a heroin overdose. begged him. Did
- 7:53he listen? No. Listen to your mother. She knows.
- 7:57Notice it says, give strong drink to those who
- 7:59are perishing. For those who just want to continue
- 8:02to destroy their lives, they will destroy their
- 8:05lives without any hesitation. When God gives
- 8:08grace and mercy, latch onto that because God
- 8:11is giving you life to run away from the thing
- 8:14that has snatched you. Notice it says here in
- 8:18verse Seven, let them drink and forget their
- 8:21poverty and remember their misery no more. Eventually,
- 8:24they won't remember anything. By God's grace,
- 8:27if God has given you life, embrace it. Open your
- 8:30mouth for the mute, for the rights of those who
- 8:33are destitute. You should be men, you should
- 8:36be speakers, speaking on behalf of those who
- 8:39cannot speak for themselves. This is from a mother's
- 8:42mouth. Open your mouth, judge righteously, defend
- 8:46the rights of the poor and the needy. Take care
- 8:48of those who cannot take care of themselves.
- 8:50That's wisdom from a mother's mouth. So I want
- 8:53you to notice here in this oracle that's been
- 8:56given to King Lemuel. This is a mother giving
- 9:01him directions on how to lead. You know who develops
- 9:04leaders in the home? You know who develops godly
- 9:07men? Moms. Why? Because when dad's out there
- 9:12working eight hours a day, guess who's forming
- 9:14and molding that man into being a man? Their
- 9:18mother, you come and you lead your wife. She
- 9:21leads the kids. Notice what it says. Next, biblical
- 9:25principle. Biblical motherhood starts with how
- 9:28well she partners with her husband. How you treat
- 9:32your husband teaches children more than what
- 9:35you say about how a Christian woman should be.
- 9:38The greatest gift that you can give your kids
- 9:41is to love their father. and to treat him with
- 9:44respect and honor as God has assigned him the
- 9:46responsibility to be the head of the home, the
- 9:49leader who leads in service and in servitude.
- 9:52That's how men lead. Men become slaves. What
- 9:56did Jesus say? Peter, if I do not wash your feet,
- 9:59you will have no part with me. Treat him well.
- 10:04Love him well. Be faithful to him, and your kids
- 10:08will learn what it means to be faithful. First
- 10:10Peter 3, 1 through 2. Likewise, wives, be subject
- 10:14to your own husbands so that even if some do
- 10:17not obey the word, they may be won without a
- 10:20word by the conduct of their wives when they
- 10:24see your respectful and pure conduct. What's
- 10:28interesting about this word subject means partner.
- 10:31Walk alongside with, work with, together with,
- 10:35support with, fit him even if he's not a believer.
- 10:40Don't give up. Proverbs 31, 10 through 12. An
- 10:44excellent wife who can find. I found one. I know
- 10:48all of you are saying, well, if you're married,
- 10:50you have to say the same thing. Because if you
- 10:52don't, you're in deep trouble when you go home.
- 10:56So hopefully you can say your wife's excellent.
- 10:58I do. I don't have a choice. She is far more
- 11:05precious than jewels. Her value is beyond measure,
- 11:10and she is priceless. So much more valuable and
- 11:13priceless than jewels is a wife to a husband.
- 11:17There is nothing more valuable in my life than
- 11:20my wife besides Jesus. Nothing. And I say this
- 11:24to my kids ever since they were little. When
- 11:26they would mouth off and give mom a hard time,
- 11:28don't talk to my wife that way. You're going
- 11:31to grow up, move out, get your own family. I
- 11:35got to die with her. Leave her alone. Respect
- 11:39her. Don't talk to my wife that way. Not don't
- 11:42talk to your mother that way. Don't talk to my
- 11:45wife that way. She's mine. My gift. Now, thank
- 11:50you. She does him. Notice what it says here.
- 11:55The heart of her husband trusts in her and he
- 11:58will have no lack of gain. There's nothing that
- 12:01I don't trust my wife with. Nothing. Trust me.
- 12:04She grabs my phone anytime she wants. Just saying.
- 12:07She does him good and not harm all the days of
- 12:09her life. Does she do, do you do your husband
- 12:12good? Are you working and partnering and edifying
- 12:15him? Next principle. A woman living biblical
- 12:18motherhood is never found to be idle. She is
- 12:21always doing what she was designed to do. Galatians,
- 12:26I mean, Genesis 2, 15 says, and 18 says this.
- 12:29For God took the man and put him in the garden
- 12:31of Eden to work it and keep it. Verse 18, then
- 12:36God said, it is not good for man that man should
- 12:40be alone. I will make a helper fit for him. So
- 12:45I want you to get this, men. She is your helper,
- 12:49one who works with you in the garden, not someone
- 12:52you tell what to do. She is not your slave, and
- 12:56you are not dominant over her. You walk with
- 12:59her and you guide her. You lovingly care and
- 13:03protect her and you work together. You invite
- 13:05her into the work together with her. She's there
- 13:09to fit you, not for you to control. Biblical
- 13:13men who lead, lead by being a slave and edifying
- 13:18his wife so that she's willing to walk alongside
- 13:21with her husband to accomplish what God has set
- 13:25for them to do. I could not be the pastor I am
- 13:29today without my wife's complete and total partnership
- 13:32and support in what we do. Very important. Now,
- 13:37Proverbs 31, 13 through 16. She seeks wool and
- 13:43flax. Notice, she seeks it. She doesn't go to
- 13:47her husband and say, honey, you know, I need
- 13:49some clothes for the kids. I got to make clothes.
- 13:51Is it all right if I buy that? Because if she
- 13:54doesn't buy it, guess who runs around? Without
- 13:56clothes on. They're kids. Not good. But notice
- 14:00what she does. Not only does she do that, but
- 14:02she also does some other things with it. Look
- 14:04what it says. She seeks wool and works with willing
- 14:08hands. She delights in working with her hands.
- 14:13She finds God's purpose and plan for her life
- 14:17to be busy doing what God has equipped her to
- 14:20do. She is like the ships of the merchant. She
- 14:24brings her food from afar. So not only does she
- 14:27take care of your clothes, washes them, folds
- 14:30them, sometimes irons them. She also cooks your
- 14:34dinners. When you come home from work, what's
- 14:37the first thing you do? Sit on the couch, hit
- 14:40your recliner, ask her for something to drink.
- 14:43Hey, you know what my wife say? Get up and get
- 14:47it yourself. That's what she would say. I know,
- 14:52babe. She's helping me get up and get it myself.
- 14:57No, her job is not to serve at my every beck
- 15:00and call. What should men do? Men, like Jesus,
- 15:04go in after a long day's work, see a bunch of
- 15:07piled dishes, and they do the dishes. You're
- 15:10like, well, that's not fair. I worked all day.
- 15:12She did too. She managed your house, cleaned
- 15:16your laundry, took care of the kids, took out
- 15:19the dog, made you dinner, made sure they ate
- 15:21lunch, taught them school all day, and then you
- 15:24want to come home and act like you're Mr. King.
- 15:26Notice what it says here. She rises while it
- 15:30is yet night and provides food for her household
- 15:33and portions for her maidens. Now, I don't have
- 15:35any slave, but I will tell you, there are many
- 15:37times my wife usually goes to bed really late.
- 15:39I know because anyone who talks and texts her
- 15:42at night, I know you. I'm in bed. My wife's still
- 15:49up. So she's busy preparing. How many times has
- 15:55she prepared food the previous day in order to
- 15:59make sure you had food for the next day? Or that
- 16:01you have lunch to take to work? That's your wife.
- 16:05She's managing and running the house. She considers,
- 16:09she devises and purposes a field and buys it.
- 16:13Notice, she doesn't go to her husband and ask
- 16:15permission to buy a field. You're going to notice
- 16:18something here in a minute. Why? Why does she,
- 16:21on her own, devise plan and purpose to buy a
- 16:25field? Because she has to feed her family. Look
- 16:29what it says. With the fruit of her hands, she
- 16:32plants a vineyard with the field she just bought.
- 16:35Do you know what that means? Not only does she
- 16:38provide food, grapes for her family, she's provided
- 16:42revenue. Because vineyards are very expensive.
- 16:46They produce wine and other things that she gets
- 16:50to sell. Isn't that interesting? She is always
- 16:54looking for ways to care and provide for her
- 16:57family. She is fulfilling the work mandate as
- 17:00prescribed and commanded by God in Genesis 2.
- 17:04She's fulfilling what she's supposed to do as
- 17:07a wife. If I trust her, I need to trust her with
- 17:10the money. I only trust you but this far because
- 17:14I need to manage it all. We do it together or
- 17:17it don't get done. The beauty of a woman living
- 17:19biblical motherhood is not in attire that draws
- 17:23the eye. It's not in what she wears that draws
- 17:25the eye, but she is clothed in strength and dignity.
- 17:291 Peter 3 -6, chapter 3 -6. Do not let your adorning
- 17:36be external, the braiding of hair or the putting
- 17:38on of gold jewelry or the clothing you wear,
- 17:41but let her adorning be the hidden person of
- 17:44the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle
- 17:47and quiet spirit. She's not demanding, pushy.
- 17:51She partners, she works together, she communicates
- 17:55clearly. She's not screaming at the top of her
- 17:58lungs because in God's sight, it is very precious,
- 18:01that gentle and quiet spirit. For this is how
- 18:04the holy women who hoped in God used to endure
- 18:07themselves by submitting to their own husband.
- 18:11As Sarah obeyed Abraham. This word obeyed means
- 18:15honored. As she honored him by calling him Lord,
- 18:19by calling him dear, by calling him my love,
- 18:21by calling him my king. Not my master slave,
- 18:26but master husband. And then, and you are her
- 18:31children if you do good. And do not fear anything
- 18:34that is frightening. Why? Because she is sure
- 18:37in the hands of her God and her husband. Proverbs
- 18:4031, 17 through 25. She dresses herself. She girds
- 18:45and prepares herself with purpose. She gets ready
- 18:50on purpose. I got a mission. What does she dress
- 18:55herself with? With strength. And she makes her
- 18:58arms strong. This makes her arm strong is God's
- 19:01symbol of strength for her family and those in
- 19:05her life. I am getting myself ready to walk alongside
- 19:09you, partner with you, work with you. I got work
- 19:13to do. That's the idea. She perceives, she knows
- 19:17with confidence that her merchandise is profitable.
- 19:20Think about it. I mean, she just bought a field.
- 19:23She's making wine. She's like, I can make some
- 19:25serious money. She perceives, she knows with
- 19:29confidence that her merchandise is profitable.
- 19:31Her lamp does not go out at night. She works
- 19:34and continues to work. She puts her hands to
- 19:37the distaff and her hands hold to the spindle.
- 19:40She's the one doing the work when you're busy
- 19:42doing other things, dad. She opens her hand to
- 19:47the poor and reaches out her hand to the needy.
- 19:50She is always compassionate to those who are
- 19:53less fortunate. She is not afraid of the snow
- 19:55for her household. Why? Because she's already
- 19:58prepared them for the clothing she needs. For
- 20:00all her household is clothed in scarlet. She's
- 20:04given them the best of what she has. She makes
- 20:08bed coverings for herself. You notice she doesn't
- 20:11forget about taking care of herself. She takes
- 20:14care of herself also. Her clothing is fine linen
- 20:17and purple. Her husband is known in the gates
- 20:20when she sits among the elders of the land. Notice,
- 20:23she makes her husband popular. When a wife partners
- 20:27with her husband and they are busy accomplishing
- 20:30what God has set out for them to do, everyone
- 20:34knows them. We are no greater than the women
- 20:38that God has given us. She makes linen garments
- 20:43and sells them. She delivers sashes to the merchant.
- 20:46You don't do that. I don't know about you, but
- 20:49this woman is making some serious cash. Strength
- 20:52and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs
- 20:54at the time to come. She has no fear. She has
- 20:57contempt for what's coming. It's a joke. It doesn't
- 21:01matter, she says. Women living biblical motherhood,
- 21:05as God designed, commands praise and respect,
- 21:09especially from her family. Do you respect? your
- 21:12mom? Do you respect your wife? Do you proclaim
- 21:16and give praise and honor to the woman that God
- 21:19has put in you? This life giver. Psalm 127 verse
- 21:233. I want you to hear this. This is huge. Psalm
- 21:26127 verse 3 and Proverbs 14 .1. Proverbs 14 .1
- 21:29is going to wreck a lot of men's ideas. It's
- 21:31just amazing. Behold, children are a heritage
- 21:35from the Lord, the fruit of the womb, a reward.
- 21:38The only reason why we as men can claim that
- 21:43we have arrows in the quiver is because our wives
- 21:45give them to us by God's grace and his will.
- 21:50But I want you to notice something else. Proverbs
- 21:5314, 1. I want you to hear this, men. Pay attention,
- 21:57gentlemen. The wisest of women builds her house.
- 22:02But folly with her own hands tears it down. A
- 22:06woman can make a house successful, strong, and
- 22:10powerful if she's partnering alongside with her
- 22:12husband and they are walking together for the
- 22:14glory and edification of God and the accomplishment
- 22:17of bringing up godly children. But she, in the
- 22:20same breath, can tear it down. There is nothing
- 22:23worse than a scornful woman. But there's nothing
- 22:26greater than a woman who does the will of God.
- 22:31and obeys him. Proverbs 31, 26 through 27, no,
- 22:3531, sorry. She opens her mouth with wisdom. Notice
- 22:39that. Your kids get their wisdom from their mother.
- 22:43And the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.
- 22:46How well should you care for her? She looks well
- 22:50to the ways of her household and does not eat
- 22:52the bread of idleness. I can tell you that for
- 22:56sure. I wake up in the morning. I don't know
- 22:59about you. But my brain isn't working. I need
- 23:02like an hour and a half. I've sat down for like
- 23:0645 minutes. My wife comes out and says, what
- 23:08are you doing? I said, I just woke up. She said,
- 23:1245 minutes ago. I said, I need another hour.
- 23:17What does she do? Right in the kitchen starts
- 23:19working. I'm like, oh my goodness. Showing me
- 23:22up. I'm like, sometimes I just sit and enjoy.
- 23:25Because I'm just like, my brain is like, ooh.
- 23:28She allows me. She allows me. Look what else
- 23:31it says here. She looks well to the ways of her
- 23:35household and does not eat the bread of idleness.
- 23:36Her children rise up and call her blessed. Her
- 23:40husband also, and he praises her. Do you understand
- 23:44how blessed you are with the woman that God has
- 23:46given you? The life giver that God has given.
- 23:49It's the greatest gift that the next salvation
- 23:51God could ever give is your wife. There is no
- 23:55greater gift. that you could give your kids to
- 23:58love your wife in front of them. My kids get
- 24:02gross when I go, hi, honey, and give her a little
- 24:04hug and kiss. She's like bugging out. They're
- 24:07like, ew, that's gross. I'm like, you're 19.
- 24:10Give me a break. Many women have done accidentally,
- 24:18but you surpassed them all. A charm is deceitful
- 24:21and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the
- 24:22Lord is to be praised. Give her. of the fruit
- 24:26of her hands, and let her work. Praise her in
- 24:28the gates. There's one more mother I want to
- 24:31be able to talk about, and that is a mother who
- 24:34is single. Didn't do this in first service, but
- 24:37I will do it here. I grew up with a mom who was
- 24:40single. I want you to think about that. She raised
- 24:44two boys. By God's grace, God redeems one and
- 24:48calls him to ministry. The other, not so much.
- 24:51But my mom was a life giver. There are two types
- 24:54of single moms. Ones where their husbands don't
- 24:57have enough gumption, don't have enough gumption
- 25:00or guts to continue to love their family and
- 25:03lead them and guide them and walk with them.
- 25:06The second are those who lose their husbands.
- 25:08It's our responsibility as the church, as best
- 25:11as we possibly can, to come alongside those women.
- 25:14It's hard enough to try to raise kids with parents.
- 25:17It's harder to raise kids without them, at least
- 25:20one. The burden that single moms have is greater
- 25:24than I could ever imagine. And my mom worked
- 25:26her rear end off. So remember those whose fathers
- 25:30are gone, who are left alone, who we must come
- 25:34alongside and walk with and be the support that
- 25:37she needs until the Lord provides another. Father,
- 25:40I want to thank you so much for your goodness
- 25:42and faithfulness. Thank you for your grace and
- 25:44mercy. Thank you, Lord, for the moms, the life
- 25:47givers. Thank you for the moms that continue
- 25:50to work hard. partnering with their husbands,
- 25:52walking side by side, accomplishing your purpose
- 25:55and your plan and your task. She is a gift. Thank
- 25:59you for the moms who are alone, still raising
- 26:03kids, walking with their children, teaching them
- 26:06their ways. I pray, Lord, that you would continue
- 26:09to remember them, provide for them as the church
- 26:13comes alongside them. I pray that you would be
- 26:16honored and glorified in all things. Lord, we
- 26:18praise you and thank you for your faithfulness
- 26:20to be honor and glory forever. In Jesus' name,
- 26:22amen.
