- 0:05Here's your host, Alex Garrett. Well, Happy Thanksgiving, and this morning

- 0:25five mile run. But before that, I had Gaby and I record this
- 0:30little message to all of our friends and family, including the podcast family.
- 0:36All right, well, being that this is the first time I've ever been
- 0:39engaged on Thanksgiving, and y'all know my fiance by now. Gaby and I
- 0:45want to wish you a happy to be Thanksgiving. It is special to be
- 0:49engaged to her and thankful to her, and to have our family's blessing when
- 0:54it comes to our engagement. And we love everyone very much and am thankful
- 1:00for each other. I'm thankful for Gabby, and thankful for my family,
- 1:04Thankful that even from above, my Dad's spirit is with us this Thanksgiving,
- 1:11and very thankful to have gotten the chance to talk to many different people lonely
- 1:18not parade route, but racing route in Port Washington. Well, if you
- 1:33were on the Port Washington Thanksgiving Day run this year, you heard the voice
- 1:36of Bobby Keller greeting you and cheering on the finnage line. Bobby, thanks
- 1:40for joining my podcast for a minute. Absolutely my pleasure. I always love
- 1:45how you guys as the announcers that I've running for years pump the runners up.
- 1:48What does I mean to do this second year? Now? Right,
- 1:51it's my second year I run the Community Chest and this is an amazing event
- 1:56for Paul Washington. So what I want people to know is that this is
- 2:00a charity run. Every year we raise money for all the amazing charities here
- 2:07in Port Washington. This year we raised over three hundred and eighty five thousand
- 2:12dollars amazing for twenty eight Port Washington charities to help them do all the good
- 2:16work they do here. And that's what Thanksgiving is about, isn't en?
- 2:19It truly is. And I'm grateful for every one of our runners okay this
- 2:23year to help us well. Hopefully next year I'll be in this thing.
- 2:25But congratulates on all the great work you do. And what's your message on
- 2:30this Thanksgiving? My message on this Thanksgiving is we are one community here in
- 2:36Paul, Washington, and we come together as a community every year to run
- 2:43and the Thanksgiving Day run and now known is the Run for the Red Feather.
- 2:46And tell me what it means to be the community chests for our community
- 2:51here. Well, the community chest has been here in Paul, Washington for
- 2:53most seventy five years, and we embrace it everybody in this community and encourage
- 3:01him to think about others in our community that they need help, don't have
- 3:07as much as they do, and to think perhaps about giving their donation to
- 3:14healthcare friends and neighbors. Well, I'll be sure to tag you guys on
- 3:15it. Are you on social media? Yeah, we're on Facebook, Instagram
- 3:20and LinkedIn. All right, I'll be sure to tag you. Thanks so
- 3:22much, so much. I'm with Mary Johnson, who's actually running on a
- 3:27prosthetic leg. And how many races have you done with the turkey trot?
- 3:30I've been doing a turkey trot ever since I lost my leg seven years ago.
- 3:35Tell me about how that happened to me. A month it was an
- 3:38accident, Dasstaiam. Tell me about your running journey. So you've been running
- 3:46your whole life, I imagine, or tell me about adaptings the like if
- 3:50you don't like to have to learn d walk again and learn, and then
- 4:00I wouldn't be able to run. I didn't accept that for an answer,
- 4:03and so I did whatever I couldn't remember had to do to learn how to
- 4:09run to be able to tell me about the journey, because I mean,
- 4:12I know this is part of the moment. But tell me how many races
- 4:14you've run since losing the leg and how many process you actually had to run.
- 4:18I just had to just want to walk and went to run. It
- 4:23took me several years to learn how to hold a few years to get a
- 4:30running pross crocuses as my leg, and then once I had it, it
- 4:33took me a few years to learn how to ride. Any I still like,
- 4:38it's not perfect. It's always a learning process. So now do you
- 4:41run here in the city, are in port or do you run on the
- 4:43island? New York City? Where do you exactly run? I don't know
- 4:49whoever happened to me? Fort Washington, sometimes kan New York City. I
- 4:57always run the adaptive communities. So I learn taxing texts from other people like
- 5:02Achilles International. Achilles, Yes, yep, yeah, yeah. They've been
- 5:06trying to at me wrong with them forever. I've been running since I was
- 5:09three years old, so I kind of relate. You know, you're really
- 5:12great people. So is the recovery time with the processes A lot or do
- 5:16you recover and bounce back after e rach or how does the recovery time I
- 5:20bounce back pret quickly? Maybe just as I'm young. I don't know very
- 5:24much. So yes, well, thanks so much, marrying God bless happy.
- 5:29Thanks sitting by the way. Yeah, call me here at the twenty
- 5:30twenty three Turkey Trot and I got someone who addressed in an actual Turkey suit.
- 5:35Rebecca, congratulations on completing this race. Oh, thank you so much.
- 5:39It's so much fun. How many? How many has you've been doing
- 5:42this? That it's my fifth year doing the race, but my third one
- 5:44in the Turkey costumes? Tell me what it means to run this whole event
- 5:47every year? Oh, it's really great to see the whole media come together
- 5:51and really you see all differents loans up anleticism from the kids coming back after
- 5:57their first year of college and just rushing it. You know, people have
- 6:00been doing this for years and years now. A lot of pies get donated.
- 6:04It's just a really great way to kick off the day. Now,
- 6:08what do you do? Are you in port or where do you run?
- 6:10Yeah? I'm here in Fort Washington. Yeah very cool. Well, what's
- 6:13your you know a lot of people that run the race as well on the
- 6:15gathering. Yeah, so a lot of people from our gym we go to
- 6:16Island Athletics are doing the race, so we all get together afterwards. Your
- 6:20husband is also dress in the turkey. Yeah, tell me about your olechny.
- 6:25My name is Jeff. Welcome to the Alex Scarrat podcast. Tell me
- 6:29about your run today in this turkey costume. You know what, I tried
- 6:30my best. It was warmer than I thought it would be, so the
- 6:33turkey costume really made me overheat there for in the end stuck with it and
- 6:40almost passed out, and then it was fine. Now you guys are the
- 6:42only ones I dress up in gear during this day, right, Yeah?
- 6:45You know our favorite ones are the reindeer with Santa. So I think there's
- 6:48a group of nine the run together. Oh yeah, there's another guy with
- 6:53inflatable turkey here. But yeah, it's always fun to see what kind of
- 6:56creative things too. How do you good plays for Thanksgiving? The rest of
- 6:59the day we'll cover cover from the rum My favorite part of dressing up for
- 7:03the turkey. Costumes are around the corners and groups of kids are like,
- 7:06look at that perfectly and they go, wow, he's going kind of fast.
- 7:11That's great. Well, congratulations again, and one more thing, did
- 7:15your times get better as the years go on? Here or no? My
- 7:18best year is my first, My bedtime is the first. Guy's a turkey
- 7:21cost Oh but you know so well, congratulations again, Rebecca, Thanks so
- 7:28much, God bless you so there you have it. And no matter how
