- 0:00Speaker 1: Back on the Yukon Hockey Coaches Show. We're just have
- 0:02Speaker 1: a game. We're solving the world's problem. Yes, we're solving
- 0:04Speaker 1: the world's problems. Yeah for sure.
- 0:06Speaker 2: I don't forget.
- 0:06Speaker 1: We've got a big basketball game on campus Wednesday, men
- 0:09Speaker 1: take on Arizona. Mike and wait'll have that six thirty
- 0:11Speaker 1: on the radio. Ice Bus is in New Hampshire Friday, Durham,
- 0:15Speaker 1: seven o'clock.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Did I see six thirty? Saturday night? Christ all right,
- 0:19Speaker 2: and both those games are on ESPN.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Plus we have basketball and football responsibilities later in the week.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Women play Friday, football Saturday. They all conflicts. So Adam
- 0:29Speaker 1: will be in Boca. He gets he gets some warm,
- 0:32Speaker 1: go to warm.
- 0:33Speaker 3: No pregame radio interviews.
- 0:34Speaker 1: No, no, no, no radio till Merrimack just belay. Yeah,
- 0:39Speaker 1: it doesn't have to put up with us.
- 0:40Speaker 3: I just have to do capies. TV.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Yeah exactly, TV stuff. Yeah.
- 0:44Speaker 1: Let's see here, We've got two guy young men coming
- 0:47Speaker 1: up here, Kayden Shahan and obviously joeybile Down.
- 0:49Speaker 2: He speaks for himself.
- 0:50Speaker 1: Uh you, I mean We've I discussed this with Murtag.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Mike Burtag and the pregame show. The jump that he's
- 0:57Speaker 1: made so many guys, whether you've had him at you
- 1:00Speaker 1: see or hear and a Joey Muldowney's exhibit a of
- 1:02Speaker 1: that too. The jump from freshman to sophomore year sometimes,
- 1:06Speaker 1: unless unless you're a super superstar, you know, sometimes you
- 1:09Speaker 1: don't get that opportunity. But Mike has certainly made the
- 1:12Speaker 1: most of his. Kayden Shahan has just simply grown along
- 1:15Speaker 1: playing with guys like Ethan and witcamb anything, Guarduela now
- 1:19Speaker 1: playing with some other people. But he's he's been a
- 1:21Speaker 1: nice jump here in year two, it would seem.
- 1:24Speaker 3: Oh yeah, I mean, well he was a good player
- 1:27Speaker 3: as a freshman.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Yeah, they had a good line last year. That was
- 1:29Speaker 2: a good combination.
- 1:30Speaker 4: One of the things I was talking about with our
- 1:33Speaker 4: team today is I think what makes us a very
- 1:36Speaker 4: dangerous team is that the balance we have.
- 1:39Speaker 3: It's like, you can look at our lineup.
- 1:42Speaker 4: I'm looking at your sheet right now, Bob, Like, okay,
- 1:44Speaker 4: which one is our fourth line?
- 1:46Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 1:49Speaker 2: THEO Yeah this is Friday, Yeah, Friday.
- 1:53Speaker 3: It's such a.
- 1:56Speaker 4: I was telling our team today and I was looking
- 1:58Speaker 4: at it. Our top orror has eight points.
- 2:03Speaker 3: Yep.
- 2:05Speaker 4: If you look at to say, like give a four
- 2:10Speaker 4: point difference, we have fifteen players within four points of
- 2:17Speaker 4: the top scorer.
- 2:18Speaker 3: You're not going to find that anywhere else.
- 2:21Speaker 4: Like I started looking, you know, Northeastern I think had
- 2:24Speaker 4: seven or you and h might have seven. Northeastern had six,
- 2:28Speaker 4: like the teams that we've played Ohio State might have
- 2:30Speaker 4: had five. The balance that we have on our team
- 2:35Speaker 4: is I think what makes us, which has made us
- 2:40Speaker 4: a really hard team to play against, because I don't
- 2:43Speaker 4: even really care about matchups, line matchups, very very rarely
- 2:47Speaker 4: do I care about a line matchup because I have
- 2:50Speaker 4: faith and trust in every single one of them that
- 2:52Speaker 4: they can play against anybody.
- 2:54Speaker 5: The line with Shahan, Cardula and Whitcomb last year it
- 2:59Speaker 5: was the you know, the freshman line. This year, we've
- 3:02Speaker 5: seen some mixing and matching. So, you know, you bring
- 3:05Speaker 5: back an all freshman line that grew together into sophomores.
- 3:09Speaker 5: So what does go into mixing and matching and kind
- 3:13Speaker 5: of seeing, okay, maybe this piece could work a little
- 3:15Speaker 5: differently over here and just experimenting with that.
- 3:18Speaker 4: Yeah, we had different lines. On Saturday night. We put
- 3:20Speaker 4: Joey back with Jake and Witcomb. I thought they were
- 3:23Speaker 4: playing pretty well, when Joey was in the lineup and
- 3:28Speaker 4: we had Carlin de Zandy with Tattle and Shahan and
- 3:31Speaker 4: they got a big goal for us. You know that
- 3:36Speaker 4: was it was an unbelievable back check by the Zandy
- 3:39Speaker 4: which causes a turnover and Tattle makes a high end
- 3:42Speaker 4: backhand play and Shaehan one time sit in the back
- 3:45Speaker 4: of the net.
- 3:45Speaker 2: It was a.
- 3:47Speaker 4: Really, really nice goal. Gardula chipped in with another goal,
- 3:51Speaker 4: so you know he was playing with Murtag and Frasier.
- 3:56Speaker 4: Joey gets the game winner. I think we got do
- 3:59Speaker 4: we get goals from every line?
- 4:01Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 4:02Speaker 4: Percival score too, so we got goals from every line
- 4:05Speaker 4: on Saturday night.
- 4:07Speaker 1: That's pretty good problem to have. The more I watch
- 4:11Speaker 1: alexand Blay play, the more I like him. He made
- 4:14Speaker 1: a really nice play to help get the first goal.
- 4:19Speaker 1: That was Gardula opening the score Friday night. I thought
- 4:21Speaker 1: he made a couple of nice plays there, and he's
- 4:23Speaker 1: starting to.
- 4:23Speaker 2: Use the body.
- 4:25Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:27Speaker 4: I think Blazer is doing a great job. We knew
- 4:30Speaker 4: how skilled he was, I didn't know how tough he is.
- 4:34Speaker 4: I didn't realize how physical he can play. And he's
- 4:38Speaker 4: not afraid to stick his nose in there, and you know,
- 4:42Speaker 4: finished checks really excited about him. I think Carlin's playing
- 4:47Speaker 4: really well as a new player in that lineup, and
- 4:51Speaker 4: we're getting great. You know, both Anthony Elaine Samaki and
- 4:58Speaker 4: Brendan Dunfie are in big minutes for us right now.
- 5:02Speaker 5: When he goes through the recruiting process, and it's okay, yeah,
- 5:04Speaker 5: you didn't know that Alexandlei was going to be this
- 5:08Speaker 5: type of player. How many times did you see him
- 5:11Speaker 5: play in person over his recruiting process before he arrived
- 5:14Speaker 5: to you?
- 5:15Speaker 3: I didn't see him once.
- 5:16Speaker 5: Okay, well there you go.
- 5:18Speaker 4: It was a late ad and normally that's not the case.
- 5:21Speaker 4: I see most of our players play. But Nick went
- 5:24Speaker 4: up and sarmed PERUSI saw him, and he says.
- 5:26Speaker 3: We have to get this kid. He's really really good.
- 5:28Speaker 3: I like him a lot.
- 5:29Speaker 4: And when my assistants come back and they're that passionate
- 5:33Speaker 4: about a player, you know, I trust him. So he
- 5:38Speaker 4: was and he's been everything that advertised as Nick, you know,
- 5:43Speaker 4: that's how he portrayed him, and he's been really really good.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Mike, it's got to be a luxury for you to
- 5:49Speaker 1: have not one big mobile defenceman, but two, Vic, It's
- 5:53Speaker 1: been really good Brennan. As you mentioned, Brennan's been fun
- 5:56Speaker 1: to watch.
- 5:57Speaker 4: He was one of our best defenseman Friday night. Brendan,
- 6:00Speaker 4: he's growing, and Tyler Helton does an incredible job with
- 6:04Speaker 4: our defenseman. And just looking where vikings come in a
- 6:08Speaker 4: year's time, you know, and how dependent he's become. He's
- 6:12Speaker 4: going to have a lot of offers from NHL teams,
- 6:15Speaker 4: I know after the year. Brendan's doing a fabulous job.
- 6:18Speaker 4: And I also when I'm looking at our defenseman, you know,
- 6:22Speaker 4: Missinio's as solid as can be. But kai Jian Varia
- 6:26Speaker 4: right now is playing at a All American level. He's
- 6:29Speaker 4: playing at twenty six minutes a night, he plays every
- 6:32Speaker 4: special team, and his defense has been fantastic.
- 6:37Speaker 2: And he skates like the win.
- 6:39Speaker 3: Oh.
- 6:39Speaker 4: He's just fearless and he's playing at a very very
- 6:43Speaker 4: high level right now.
- 6:44Speaker 5: Why would someone who played on the developmental team like
- 6:47Speaker 5: he did have slipped through the cracks and not been drafted.
- 6:52Speaker 4: Well, I think it's probably size based. You don't see
- 6:55Speaker 4: many defensemen his size unless they're you don't see many
- 7:02Speaker 4: size unless they're like just an elite top five skater
- 7:06Speaker 4: or at that size, You've got to bring a lot
- 7:09Speaker 4: of offense to the NHL because you're playing against a
- 7:14Speaker 4: lot of Ethan Whitcomb's every single night. At the NHL level,
- 7:17Speaker 4: you're playing against Matthew could Chuck, You're playing against Malcoln
- 7:21Speaker 4: who's big.
- 7:22Speaker 3: You know, It's just it's a different level.
- 7:26Speaker 2: Yep, he has retired head.
- 7:29Speaker 1: All I can think of is marking on a I
- 7:31Speaker 1: don't know if it was a penalty shot or a breakaway,
- 7:33Speaker 1: no deep move about fifteen feet out.
- 7:35Speaker 2: He just whind fires and beat the guy. And I
- 7:37Speaker 2: was like, Okay, Yeah, they're special. That's why they play
- 7:40Speaker 2: in the NHL. Yeah, all right, we're gonna let cav
- 7:43Speaker 2: take a little break.
- 7:43Speaker 1: We will hear from Kayden Shahan and Joey Muldowney coming
- 7:47Speaker 1: up next. Boy, Cav went, he went like that, just like, yeah,
- 7:52Speaker 1: he's hungry, just like a Kai Jan Veria dash up
- 7:54Speaker 1: the ice.
- 7:55Speaker 2: He went that fast.
- 7:56Speaker 1: Back with the interviews, Kate and Shahan's first here on
- 7:58Speaker 1: the Yukon Hockey Coaches Here on Liarfield, Stay with Us,
