- 0:00I've got three things that I want to share this
- 0:03morning. And the first one is a word for maybe
- 0:11one or two people here. But the Lord put this
- 0:14on my heart last night as I was praying for the
- 0:17service. And I want to share this with you. Your
- 0:23season of laughter is coming. Will you receive
- 0:32that? Your season of laughter is coming. Now
- 0:42I want to read some verses from Genesis chapter
- 0:4421. Verse 1. Now the Lord was gracious to Sarah
- 0:51as he had said. And the Lord did for Sarah what
- 0:58he had promised. And I want to remind you, and
- 1:03you can remind the person sitting next to you
- 1:05right now, God will do what he said he would
- 1:09do. God will do what he said he would do. Amen?
- 1:17So just tell that to the person next to you right
- 1:20now. God will do what he said he would do. Sarah
- 1:26became pregnant. and bore a son to Abraham in
- 1:30his old age. At the very time God had promised
- 1:35him, there it is again, Abraham gave him the
- 1:39name Isaac to the son Sarah bore him. And when
- 1:44his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised
- 1:48him as God commanded him. Abraham was a hundred
- 1:52years old when his son Isaac was born to him.
- 1:55And listen to what Sarah said. Sarah said, God
- 2:01has brought me laughter. And everyone who hears
- 2:07about this will laugh with me. Hallelujah. Now
- 2:15you need to understand something, that this was
- 2:18after a lifetime of grieving. She had been married
- 2:23to Abraham for a long time. They had the promise
- 2:26that God had given to Abraham for 25 years when
- 2:31she was 65. And so she was living, believing
- 2:37for a long time. And now she's 90. Her womb is
- 2:44dead. But God woke up her womb. so that she could
- 2:51receive and bear a miracle son. Hallelujah. Now,
- 2:57the year before, when the men came sent from
- 3:00God to bear that message, Sarah laughed. Do you
- 3:06remember when Sarah laughed? You can read the
- 3:08story, Genesis 17, 18, right in there. And Sarah
- 3:11laughed because she was doubting. And she was
- 3:16embarrassed that she laughed. In fact, Abraham
- 3:19asked her, why did you laugh? And she lied. And
- 3:23she said, I did not laugh. And you see, the first
- 3:27laughter that was connected to this miracle was
- 3:32the laughter of doubt. But God is faithful even
- 3:37when we are not oftentimes, amen? And he was
- 3:41faithful to Sarah. And Sarah, bore a child, and
- 3:47God turned her laughter of doubt into the laughter
- 3:51of abundance. Hallelujah. And she freely, before
- 3:55she lied about it and she said, no, I didn't
- 3:57laugh. No, I didn't doubt. No, I didn't do any
- 4:01of those things. But now she has been given a
- 4:04son. The promise has come to her. And she is
- 4:08freely laughing in front of everybody. And she's
- 4:12saying that the God that made me laugh is going
- 4:16to make everybody else laugh when they hear my
- 4:18story. Hallelujah. Now, some of you have been
- 4:22standing, believing God for a long time. And
- 4:26God says this morning, your season of laughter
- 4:30is coming. Hallelujah. And so I want to pray
- 4:35over you right now. I want to pray over you because
- 4:38there's a couple of people in this room that
- 4:41that went into. And you say, I'm latching on
- 4:44to that word. If that's you, lift up your hand
- 4:47right now. You're latching on to that word. Hands
- 4:51up all over this room. Father, in the name of
- 4:54Jesus, I thank you for the hands that are up
- 4:57right now just representing the promise of God
- 5:01being fulfilled in their lives. They're believing
- 5:04you. They're standing. And for some of them,
- 5:07it has been a long, long season. God, I'm asking
- 5:12right now all over this room. that the season
- 5:15of laughter will come forth in the name of Jesus.
- 5:22You say, how Lord can it be done? How Lord can
- 5:26it be done? But we join with Mary and say with
- 5:29God, all things are possible. Lord, when Elizabeth
- 5:33gave birth to John, the Bible says that everyone
- 5:38rejoiced with her. Hallelujah. And God, I thank
- 5:43you for the miracles that are coming to these
- 5:46hands that are lifting up right now in Jesus'
- 5:48name. I thank you for the breakthroughs that
- 5:51are coming. I thank you for the answered prayer
- 5:53that is coming in the name of Jesus. I thank
- 5:56you for the healing that is coming in the name
- 5:58of Jesus. And I ask, Father, that the season
- 6:02of laughter will come in Jesus' name. Hallelujah.
- 6:11Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord. Okay, you can
- 6:16tell I haven't preached in a while. Sermon number
- 6:18two. Sermon number two is in Joshua chapter 24.
- 6:24And these are for some people to strengthen their
- 6:28hand in their family. To strengthen their hand
- 6:33in what God has called you in your family. And
- 6:37you remember Joshua had just, he had won all
- 6:41the battles. The land was being settled. And
- 6:44he was giving a victory speech to the Israelites
- 6:48before they split up and all went their way.
- 6:51And he was warning them about serving other gods.
- 6:55And he said in verse 14 of Joshua 24, 24 -14,
- 7:02Now fear the Lord and serve Him with all faithfulness.
- 7:08Everybody say, all faithfulness. Throw away the
- 7:13gods your ancestors worshipped beyond the Euphrates
- 7:17River and in Egypt and serve the Lord. But if
- 7:24serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then
- 7:27choose for yourselves this day whom you will
- 7:31serve, whether the gods of your ancestors, they
- 7:35serve beyond the Euphrates or the gods of the
- 7:38Amorites in whose land you are living. But as
- 7:41for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.
- 7:49Hallelujah. And that's a declaration I felt the
- 7:52Lord put in my heart. This is all aside from
- 7:55my ever -shortening sermon that's about to come
- 7:59up. I believe that that word was to be released
- 8:02this morning over somebody here to have... courage
- 8:07to stand up for your household and say, as for
- 8:11me and my house, we're not going to go the way
- 8:14the world. We're not going to do the things that
- 8:16the world does. We're not going to operate the
- 8:19way the world operates. We're not going to be
- 8:21in love with the things that the world is in
- 8:23love with. We're not going to spend our money
- 8:25the way the world spends its money because as
- 8:29for me and my house, we're serving God. Hallelujah.
- 8:34Hallelujah. How many of you will with a fresh
- 8:36declaration today? Whether you are single, living
- 8:39by yourself, that is your household. Or whether
- 8:43you are a grandparent and all of your kids are
- 8:47gone and you're there by yourself now, that is
- 8:50your household. Amen? Or whether you have kids
- 8:53in your home, whether you're a full family in
- 8:56your home right now, man of God, woman of God,
- 9:00will you stand up in the Spirit? And will you
- 9:04say, as for me and my house, we will serve the
- 9:08Lord. Hallelujah. The spirit of Joshua come upon
- 9:12you in Jesus' name. Hallelujah. If that's you,
- 9:16lift up your hand before the Lord right now.
- 9:19God, all over this room, people standing up saying,
- 9:23as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.
- 9:29God, we declare that with our whole heart. God,
- 9:33we just embrace the declaration Joshua made.
- 9:39Joshua knew that others would go the other direction.
- 9:42And there might be people at work or even our
- 9:45friends that have gone the wrong direction. But
- 9:48we declare with something fresh in our hearts
- 9:50at the beginning of this summer, God, we declare
- 9:53that as for me and my house, we will serve the
- 10:00Lord. We declare that in the name of Jesus. Ooh,
- 10:06hallelujah. Hallelujah. God, just in the midst
- 10:10of this, we declare our, we just recognize that
- 10:13we're imperfect, that we are being made holy.
- 10:17We are holy and we're being made holy. We are
- 10:20sanctified, but we're also being made sanctified.
- 10:24That you are working in our lives. We ask for
- 10:29your help in this, your grace. God, it's not
- 10:34just about following rules better because we
- 10:37fall short. It is about leaning into Jesus and
- 10:41the power of the Holy Spirit and trusting God
- 10:45day by day to be our strength. We declare, as
- 10:51for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.
- 10:59Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Isn't that good? Praise
- 11:04God. Praise God. And then finally, this morning,
- 11:09in 1 Peter 1, if you would turn there with me.
- 11:141 Peter 1. And we're going to be celebrating
- 11:18with baptisms right after this time. I want to
- 11:23talk for a moment about the refiner's fire. And
- 11:29I want to ask you, is the refiner's fire burning
- 11:33in your heart? The refiner's fire. And we're
- 11:39in 1 Peter chapter 1, and I want to read from
- 11:43verses 6 through 9. In all this you greatly rejoice,
- 11:47though now for a little while you may have had
- 11:51to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. so that
- 11:58the proven genuineness of your faith, of greater
- 12:03worth than gold, which perishes even though refined
- 12:07by fire, may result in praise, glory, and honor
- 12:13when Jesus Christ is revealed. Though you have
- 12:19not seen Him, you love Him. And even though you
- 12:23do not see him now, you believe in him and are
- 12:27filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy
- 12:30for you are receiving the end result of your
- 12:35faith, the salvation of your soul. Hallelujah.
- 12:39Give God praise for that. That's powerful. The
- 12:45refiner's fire. And Peter alludes to the refining
- 12:48of gold the same way that God tests your faith.
- 12:57Refiner's fire. Let me read to you some verses
- 13:02that you can write down if you're taking notes.
- 13:05Proverbs 17, 3. The crucible for silver and the
- 13:11furnace for gold. But the Lord tests the heart.
- 13:17The Lord tests the heart. So you and I, and this
- 13:23obviously is not your physical heart. This is
- 13:25the heart of your faith. The internal spiritual
- 13:29heart, God tests. He does not test it so that
- 13:37you will fail. He tests it so that you will pass.
- 13:43He's not a cruel teacher that wants most of his
- 13:47students to fail, like my freshman English teacher.
- 13:52I barely passed. Oh, God wants you to pass the
- 14:03test. And so the fire that you have been in,
- 14:09the trial, is to... increase your faith in Christ.
- 14:15Amen? And so there are different ways that the
- 14:19Lord tests us. Let me just walk through a couple
- 14:23of them quickly. Here's another proverb, Proverbs
- 14:2727, 21. The crucible for silver and the furnace
- 14:32for gold, but people are tested by their praise.
- 14:40Wow. Did you know that? When people tell you,
- 14:45you did a great job, guess what's happening in
- 14:50that moment? Your heart is being tested. What's
- 14:57in your heart often comes out when people praise
- 15:03you. Whether you have a woe is me attitude, Which
- 15:08God wants to burn out of you because sometimes
- 15:11when people praise you or give you a compliment,
- 15:13you have so much woe is me -ism in you that you
- 15:20can't even receive what they're trying to say.
- 15:23And you just outright reject what people are
- 15:27saying to you. Or whether you are inflated with
- 15:31pride. And so you have... pride that grips your
- 15:37heart when you are praised and when somebody
- 15:39compliments you and pride just swells up and
- 15:44you go, oh no, that's all God, but inside you're
- 15:48saying, oh yeah, that's me. Praise tests your
- 15:55heart. It's a fire. Here's what you ought to
- 15:59do when somebody praises you. you ought to first
- 16:04say, thank you. That's encouraging. Right? In
- 16:14fact, let's all say that together. Thank you.
- 16:17That's encouraging. That's a great thing to say.
- 16:22And then do you know what you do? You give glory
- 16:27to the Lord. You give that praise to God because
- 16:32you know and I know that if I do something well
- 16:39and somebody says thank you or that was a great
- 16:43job, Darren, you know and I know that that only
- 16:48happens because of the goodness of God in my
- 16:51life. And the same is true for you. It happens
- 16:55because of the goodness of God. operating in
- 16:59your life. And so you and I cannot take the glory
- 17:04for that praise. You and I cannot take the accolades
- 17:10for that praise. We can't do it. We've got to
- 17:13give glory to God. We've got to give glory where
- 17:16glory is due. Because it is only Him working
- 17:20in my life that I am what I am. Amen? And so
- 17:24we say thank you, that's encouraging. And then
- 17:27we give God the glory for that thing in our lives.
- 17:33Amen? We give Him glory. We are tested when we
- 17:38are praised. How do you respond when people praise
- 17:43you? If you have a woe is me attitude, you need
- 17:48to repent of that in Jesus' name. Because that
- 17:52is the opposite side of pride. And it is the
- 17:56constant putting down of yourself which God does
- 17:59not do. And you need to stop it in the name of
- 18:03Jesus. And you need to say, God, thank you. I
- 18:07recognize the giftings and the good things that
- 18:10you've done in my life. I recognize those things.
- 18:14I don't have to deny them to be humble. I can
- 18:20recognize what God has done in my life, and I
- 18:24can give Him praise for that. Amen? That's good
- 18:27stuff. Praise the Lord. The second thing that
- 18:31God refines us with, which we've already touched
- 18:36on, is affliction. affliction. It's difficulty
- 18:41in life. And Jesus said, in this world you will
- 18:45have trouble, but take heart, I have overcome
- 18:48the world. And the psalmist said in Psalm 66
- 18:5310, for you God tested us, you refined us like
- 18:59silver. You refined us like silver. You brought
- 19:04us into prison. Now this was because of Their
- 19:07lack of repenting. They would not repent. You
- 19:11brought us into prison and you laid burdens on
- 19:13our back. You let people ride over our heads.
- 19:17We went through fire and water. But you brought
- 19:21us to a place of abundance. I want to read that
- 19:27again because that was exciting to me. If it
- 19:30was exciting to nobody else. Verse 12. This is
- 19:35Psalm 66, 12. You let people ride over our heads.
- 19:40We went through the fire and water, but you brought
- 19:45us to a place of abundance. You see, the refining
- 19:50and the testing is not to get you to fail and
- 19:53fall and be destroyed. It is ultimately to bless
- 19:57you and bring you into the place of abundance.
- 20:01But they had to say yes to the time. of trial.
- 20:05That's Psalm 66 10. Isaiah 48 10. God says through
- 20:13Isaiah, see I have refined you, though not as
- 20:16silver, I have tested you in the furnace of affliction.
- 20:22Wow. Zechariah 13, 8 and 9. In the whole land,
- 20:27declares the Lord, two -thirds will be struck
- 20:30down and perish. This is a prophecy. Yet one
- 20:33-third will be left in it. Verse 9. This third
- 20:37I will put into the fire. I will refine them
- 20:41like silver and test them like gold. They will
- 20:44carry on my name and I will answer them. I will
- 20:48say they are my people and they will say the
- 20:52Lord is. our God. You see, when silver and gold
- 20:58is refined, if you've ever watched the process,
- 21:01you can watch it on YouTube. As it heats up,
- 21:04what happens is all the impurities in it come
- 21:07to the surface. And the gold is so hot that when
- 21:12the impurities hit the surface, and they come
- 21:17in contact with oxygen, then they burst into
- 21:21flame and they are burned up. And this is what
- 21:26God wants to do with the dross in our lives.
- 21:30It's called dross. The dross comes up to the
- 21:33surface and it burns up so that what is left
- 21:38in your life... In that bowl is pure silver and
- 21:44pure gold and is not mixed with anything else.
- 21:48Now that's a simplified version of the purification
- 21:50process. But what does it take? Heat. It takes
- 21:55heat. And so you go through things in life. And
- 21:59you know what it does? It puts heat underneath
- 22:02you so that the impurities draw out. Amen? The
- 22:10impurities are drawn out. You hit your thumb
- 22:13with a hammer. And guess what? The impurities
- 22:19can come out. I'm just telling you. And you might
- 22:27discover there's more I need to repent of. You're
- 22:32laughing because you know it's true. Frustrating
- 22:36things happen. no matter how saved you are, frustrating
- 22:43things will still happen. And why do they happen?
- 22:50Because God is purifying our hearts. So do you
- 22:56know what the solution is? To surrender to the
- 23:01refiner's fire. The Holy Spirit has not just
- 23:05been given you to empower you so that you always
- 23:08live on cloud nine. He has come so that you can
- 23:14be a strong witness for the kingdom of God. But
- 23:19one of the functions of the Holy Spirit is to
- 23:21burn like a fire so that you and I walk refined
- 23:28before Him. Refiner's fire. And so as I close
- 23:35here, the psalmist learned to pray. And so if
- 23:46you can, turn to Psalm 139 with me, and we're
- 23:49going to close with this prayer in Psalm 139.
- 23:56There's actually multiple places in the Bible
- 23:59where people pray something similar, but... I'm
- 24:02just going to read this one as I close this morning.
- 24:08In verse 23, the psalmist says, Search me, God,
- 24:16and know my heart. Test me and know my anxious
- 24:25thoughts. See if there is any offensive way.
- 24:31in me and lead me in the way everlasting. Isn't
- 24:39this a great prayer? Do you know what this is?
- 24:41This is a surrendering to the refiner's fire.
- 24:46God, I recognize that there's places in my life
- 24:50that I can't even see. I have blind spots that
- 24:56others can see often, but even some, God, that
- 24:59only you see. And the psalmist says, God, here's
- 25:05what I want you to do. I want you to burn the
- 25:09dross off of my life. I want to be pleasing to
- 25:14you in your sight. Search me, O God, and know
- 25:21my heart. Test me and know my anxious thoughts.
- 25:29What he's praying here is not just that they
- 25:33would be exposed, but that they would be transformed
- 25:38and changed. And what the psalmist did not have
- 25:44revelation of that you and I have revelation
- 25:47of is the cross of Calvary. That you and I can
- 25:52pray this, and as we pray this, we... can come
- 25:57to the cross. Hallelujah. We can come to the
- 26:01cross where Jesus shed His blood. And we can
- 26:04say, God, search me. Know me. Try my anxious
- 26:09thoughts. I bring them to the cross for You to
- 26:14deliver me and set me free. Hallelujah. And God
- 26:20will do that. What is that vice that has you?
- 26:24That perhaps you were once freed from, but you
- 26:27went back to it. What is that internal thought
- 26:31that you constantly have that you know is not
- 26:34from God? What is that thing that you struggle
- 26:38with that you know that God needs to burn out
- 26:42of your life? Holy Spirit, search my heart. Know
- 26:47me. God, my desire is that if there is any offensive
- 26:52way in me, That God, it be out of my life. And
- 27:00that I walk in the way everlasting. I want to
- 27:05bring you pleasure, God. I want to bring you
- 27:10pleasure. And so before we move to the baptisms
- 27:15this morning. I just want to respond. And you
- 27:20might want to come down to the altar. You might
- 27:22build an altar right there where you are. You
- 27:25might just close your eyes. But I want to respond
- 27:29with a song that just says, Refiners fire, have
- 27:36your way in me. Have your way in my life. Refiners
- 27:44fire. Move in me. Thank you, Jesus.
