- Lucas: Hey Luna, ready for another episode of Learn German with Fexingo? Luna: Yeah! I've been practicing my animal words from last time. Hund, Katze... I even told my friend 'Ich habe einen Hund.' She was impressed. Lucas: Love it. Today, let's add something sweet: fruits. We'll learn five common fruits in German. Luna: Ooh, I love fruit. Let's do it. Lucas: First one: der Apfel. That means apple. Say it with me: der Apfel. Luna: der Apfel. Lucas: Perfect. der Apfel. Now a sentence: Ich esse einen Apfel. I eat an apple. Luna: Ich esse einen Apfel. That's easy. Lucas: Next: die Banane. Banana. Luna: die Banane. Hey, that's almost the same as in English. Lucas: Exactly. Die Banane ist gelb. The banana is yellow. Remember gelb from our colors episode? Luna: Yeah! Gelb. Die Banane ist gelb. Lucas: Good. Next: die Orange. It means orange – both the fruit and the color. Luna: die Orange. So 'die Orange ist orange'? Lucas: Exactly! The orange is orange. You're a natural. Luna: It's fun when it works out like that. Lucas: Now a new one: die Erdbeere. Strawberry. Luna: die Erdbeere. That's a long word! Erd... beere. Lucas: You got it. Die Erdbeere ist rot. The strawberry is red. Luna: Die Erdbeere ist rot. I love strawberries. Lucas: Last one: die Traube. Grape. Luna: die Traube. Hmm, like 'traube' – sounds a bit like 'grape' but not really. Lucas: Yeah, it's different. Die Traube ist lila oder grün. The grape is purple or green. Luna: Die Traube ist lila oder grün. Okay, I think I got them. Lucas: Let's do a quick review. Repeat after me: der Apfel. Luna: der Apfel. Lucas: die Banane. Luna: die Banane. Lucas: die Orange. Luna: die Orange. Lucas: die Erdbeere. Luna: die Erdbeere. Lucas: die Traube. Luna: die Traube. Lucas: Now let's imagine you're at a market. You see apples. What do you say? Luna: Umm... Ich möchte einen Apfel? I'd like an apple? Lucas: Perfect! Ich möchte einen Apfel. Or if you want multiple: Ich möchte Äpfel. Luna: Ah, plural. Äpfel. Got it. Lucas: Exactly. What about if you want strawberries? Luna: Ich möchte Erdbeeren. Lucas: Yes! Erdbeeren. You've got the plural down too. Luna: So we add -en for most? Banane becomes Bananen, Orange becomes Orangen? Lucas: Exactly right. Traube becomes Trauben. Luna: Cool. So if I'm at a fruit stand, I can say 'Ich möchte Bananen und Trauben, bitte.' Lucas: That's perfect. And the seller might say 'Sonst noch etwas?' Anything else? Luna: Oh, I think we learned that in the supermarket episode. I'd say 'Nein, danke.' Lucas: Yeah! You're putting it all together. Luna: Okay, let me quiz myself. Apple is... der Apfel. Banana is die Banane. Orange is die Orange. Strawberry is die Erdbeere. Grape is die Traube. Did I get them all? Lucas: Flawless. I'm impressed. Luna: Thanks! I think the trick is just practicing out loud. And you make it fun, Lucas. Lucas: Aww, thanks. That's the goal. Alright listeners, that's our five fruits for today. Practice them, try making sentences, and maybe treat yourself to an Apfel or Erdbeere. Luna: Yeah! And if you want more, come back next time for another bite-sized German lesson with Fexingo. Lucas: Bis zum nächsten Mal! Luna: Bis zum nächsten Mal!
