- 0:32Welcome to the Becker's Healthcare podcast. I'm Chris
- 0:34Sosa, your host, and I'm thrilled to be
- 0:36joined today by Matt Chance, of course, the
- 0:38senior vice president and chief operating officer of
- 0:41Scottish Rite for Children in Dallas.
- 0:43Matt, thank you for joining us today. Thank
- 0:45you, Chris. I appreciate the interest in, the
- 0:47hospital and getting us to tell the story.
- 0:49Of course. Of course. So, Matt, for those
- 0:52who are not in our audience who may
- 0:54not be familiar with yourself
- 0:56and or the organization that you work for,
- 0:58can you please tell us a little bit
- 0:59about both?
- 1:00Sure. Yeah. So I'm the chief operating officer,
- 1:03like you said. You know, I've been here
- 1:05in the Dallas market,
- 1:07for,
- 1:09just about thirty years now,
- 1:11and have been here with Scott Stride for
- 1:13a decade.
- 1:15I was actually a volunteer at Scott Stride
- 1:17thirty years ago. I started in 1995 as
- 1:19a little,
- 1:21evening volunteer,
- 1:23right after I got out of college trying
- 1:24to get some sort of health care experience
- 1:26or hospital experience.
- 1:28Went to grad school, did my residency here
- 1:30in Dallas, and really have been able to
- 1:31stay here in the DFW market
- 1:34And,
- 1:35two thirds of that, so,
- 1:37twenty years at pediatric facilities. So that that's
- 1:40really been my passion and,
- 1:43really makes me feel like I can give,
- 1:46the most, to health care through our pediatric
- 1:49providers.
- 1:50So you knew fairly early on in your
- 1:52career that you wanted to do this? So
- 1:55it sounds like a lot was leading up
- 1:56to this.
- 1:57Well, you know, my story is probably similar
- 1:59to a lot of, hospital we have frustrated
- 2:01hospital administrators who wanted to be a doctor
- 2:04and wanna be in medicine and,
- 2:06unlike, you know, professionals and successful doctors. I
- 2:10took organic chemistry in undergrad and,
- 2:12not embarrassed to say it was not my
- 2:14forte. And so, shifted and
- 2:17actually took a statistics class and fell in
- 2:19love with that. And then just, it it's
- 2:21really been a great,
- 2:23fit for,
- 2:24staying in health care and supporting patient care,
- 2:27but, for more of the business side of
- 2:29things and, using some business acumen.
- 2:32Well, that's tremendous, Matt. Yeah. It's certainly
- 2:34it goes without saying, but I will say
- 2:36it that, you know, administrative,
- 2:38roles come from all sorts of walks of
- 2:40life. So I'm glad there was that path
- 2:42for you to to lead you. Scott is
- 2:44right.
- 2:45It's been a great career for me, and
- 2:47and what a pleasure to work with
- 2:49clinicians,
- 2:50every day that, take great great care of
- 2:52our patients too. Now let's get into some
- 2:54of the specifics about, your organization.
- 2:57Let's just start with this. So what would
- 2:59you say is the most important initiative that
- 3:01you led in the past year, and what
- 3:03were the results of that?
- 3:04So Scotch Wright is a pediatric orthopedic provider.
- 3:08We've been here for over a hundred years,
- 3:10and, really, it's it's unique from most
- 3:13pediatric hospitals and that that orthopedics is our
- 3:16niche.
- 3:17So we really focus we have experts,
- 3:20clinicians,
- 3:21and,
- 3:22evolved,
- 3:23flavors who really are experts in providing pediatric
- 3:26orthopedic care.
- 3:27And so we do it at a very
- 3:29high level. We really are are obsessed with,
- 3:32you know, excellence here, and so that's a
- 3:35daily challenge.
- 3:37But, it's a fantastic organization to work at,
- 3:40and and, we we have great outcomes. And
- 3:42so it's always a a fun place to
- 3:44work, especially this time of year during the
- 3:45holidays.
- 3:47Probably our most important and issue that really,
- 3:49we've been focusing on for the last several
- 3:51years now is just access.
- 3:53Because we
- 3:55provide pediatric orthopedic care at such a high
- 3:57level,
- 3:58we really kind of feel that, if patients
- 4:01aren't receiving care from us, then they're probably
- 4:04receiving inferior care somewhere else. And
- 4:06and so we provide,
- 4:09we're a resource to, other
- 4:12providers out in the community. But when they
- 4:14have complex cases or
- 4:16or,
- 4:17you know, patients who have unique conditions,
- 4:20we we wanna really provide,
- 4:22access to that care.
- 4:24So it's it's been challenging.
- 4:26Really, we we've been here for a hundred
- 4:28years, like I said, and, really, we're
- 4:31just one access point in in, middle of
- 4:33Downtown Dallas,
- 4:35for ninety six of those years.
- 4:38We built a satellite facility
- 4:40in Frisco, Texas, which is a northern suburb
- 4:43of the Dallas area.
- 4:45And,
- 4:46we continue to stay busy. It's it's sorta
- 4:49build it and patients came, and and so
- 4:51we really try and
- 4:53balance that that,
- 4:56the the need for providing that expertise, but
- 4:59also making sure that we,
- 5:01still can allow enough patients to come in
- 5:03and see us who need a variety of,
- 5:07orthopedic,
- 5:08conditions.
- 5:09So,
- 5:10this past year, we actually had we we
- 5:13had many of our patients have, orthopedic surgery
- 5:15with us, but then need
- 5:17recovery and therapy care postoperatively.
- 5:20And so we actually opened a new facility,
- 5:23that is actually, again, also in Frisco, another
- 5:27northern suburb.
- 5:28And, it's actually in a sort of a,
- 5:31you know, a medical office building,
- 5:34but it's, it's actually on the same campus
- 5:36as the Dallas Cowboys,
- 5:39organization,
- 5:40you know, campus. And so,
- 5:42it's kind of a unique
- 5:44location to have an an outpatient therapy clinic,
- 5:47but we
- 5:48really worked hard to
- 5:51refine,
- 5:52sort of an operational model to get that
- 5:54off the ground.
- 5:55We opened,
- 5:57about a year and a half ago now,
- 6:00and really didn't know fully what to expect.
- 6:02And we're we're seeing about 600 patients a
- 6:05month now with just a handful of,
- 6:08therapy providers.
- 6:09But we're probably most proud of, of relieving
- 6:12some of that that,
- 6:14capacity from our other campuses, but most proud
- 6:17really of the patient satisfaction at that location.
- 6:19Again, it's somewhat of an experiment
- 6:22to see if we could have a therapy
- 6:24only location,
- 6:25and we've had great outcomes. We we have
- 6:27a patient satisfaction survey that we send out
- 6:30and,
- 6:31literally got, you know, perfect, patient satisfaction scores
- 6:34for the first year.
- 6:35So that that's been a nice,
- 6:38proving ground that, you know, this could be
- 6:40a
- 6:42a potential solution in in some of our
- 6:44other access points.
- 6:45It's hard to get better than perfect, hon.
- 6:47I don't know where to go from there.
- 6:50Yeah. You know, it's it's always a challenge,
- 6:51but, the the families were really pleased with
- 6:53the care, and that that really comes down
- 6:55to the providers providing every single day. But
- 6:57but it's really a a unique environment to
- 7:00have,
- 7:00you know, that level of focus on ensuring
- 7:03that each of our patients have great
- 7:05outcomes.
- 7:06Makes sense.
- 7:07Matt, let's look ahead a little bit here.
- 7:09So just in 2026,
- 7:11certainly, there are
- 7:13headwinds a plenty,
- 7:15and that's just part of being in health
- 7:17care right now,
- 7:18unfortunately. So how do you, at Skytree, looking
- 7:21to tackle these, and what are your other
- 7:22big priorities?
- 7:24Yeah. You're right. There's a lot of headwinds.
- 7:25There's a lot of funding,
- 7:27challenges in in mystery, a lot of gray
- 7:29clouds right now. But I would say probably
- 7:31in our region,
- 7:33where all all the health care systems are
- 7:35really struggling just with the population boom.
- 7:38For anybody that's not aware of the kind
- 7:41of the North well,
- 7:42the state of Texas is, you know, seeing
- 7:44a mass, increase in
- 7:46our trend in population increases, but the North
- 7:49Texas area in particular
- 7:51is probably one of the fastest growing areas
- 7:52in the country.
- 7:54And so,
- 7:55you really our challenges are to keep up
- 7:57with the those, young families that are coming
- 8:00into town
- 8:01and moving into the region looking for,
- 8:04health care providers.
- 8:06And, I mentioned earlier, we we really our
- 8:08our challenge is that we wanna make sure
- 8:11that we maintain the same very, very high
- 8:13standard of care that we provide.
- 8:16And so how do you expand but not
- 8:19dilute your level of expertise?
- 8:22So we it it requires a lot of
- 8:24very specific recruiting,
- 8:26and building a culture around,
- 8:30you know, care that is focused on the
- 8:32patients no matter where you are.
- 8:34But, yeah, that that population,
- 8:35growth and, really, it's it's not gonna slow
- 8:37down. It's it's probably gonna continue to,
- 8:39expand exponentially.
- 8:42So that that's really looking strategically. So, you
- 8:44know, a balance of,
- 8:46providing excellent care for the patients walking in
- 8:48the door every single day, but also thinking
- 8:50strategically
- 8:51about,
- 8:52how can we serve a growing population in
- 8:55the region.
- 8:56And then when yeah. I was, considering this
- 8:58question, you know, one of the other unique
- 9:00things in 2026 that we're gonna be challenged
- 9:02with, the World Cup. The World Cup's gonna
- 9:05have,
- 9:06locations,
- 9:07across,
- 9:08not just The US, but also Mexico and
- 9:10Canada. In Dallas, or the the Dallas DFW
- 9:14Metroplex is hosting nine,
- 9:16games in particular, and and I think, five
- 9:19or six different, teams countries will have their
- 9:21teams
- 9:22camped in different locations around the the metroplex.
- 9:26So that's gonna be June, July,
- 9:28'26. And so lots of, preparations already in
- 9:32in place. We're actually,
- 9:33the Dallas area is also, going to be
- 9:36the international,
- 9:37communications hub as well. So there's a lot
- 9:40of coordination,
- 9:41not just in health care, but transportation, security,
- 9:45you know, language services. And and so it
- 9:48it's gonna be a really interesting time in
- 9:50coordination effort.
- 9:52So we we've already,
- 9:53had
- 9:55our regional trauma group has really taken a
- 9:57leadership role, but there's, other, you know, groups
- 9:59of hospitals that are really focused in their
- 10:01in micro region
- 10:03and supporting the World Cup efforts. And all
- 10:06the visitors are gonna be coming through, probably,
- 10:08speaking other languages other than English.
- 10:11And it's gonna be June, July in the
- 10:13middle of the heat hottest, time of the
- 10:15year in Texas.
- 10:17Yeah. So a lot of health care needs,
- 10:19there too and hydration and, you know, things
- 10:21like that too. So we're really trying to
- 10:23play an active part in in the region's
- 10:25response to the woke ups coming in.
- 10:28Man. Yeah. That's that's gonna be really tense
- 10:29couple of months for you guys, and
- 10:32I
- 10:32would not necessarily have thought that a children's
- 10:35orthopedic specialist group such as yourself would be
- 10:38that involved, but I thank you for, illuminating
- 10:40all of that for us.
- 10:42Yeah. You know, one of our pediatric orthopedics
- 10:44also includes sports medicine. And so Yeah. I
- 10:47mean, it's probably our the the fastest growing
- 10:49aspect of what we do is is,
- 10:52you know,
- 10:53elementary, middle school, and teenage,
- 10:56you know, high schoolers that have injuries.
- 10:59And we do we do a lot of
- 11:01injury prevention, but also help athletes get back
- 11:04on the field as well.
- 11:05And, so that that's why we have that
- 11:08we absolutely will be a, you know, player
- 11:10and and a lot of support, during this
- 11:12World Cup process.
- 11:14Matt, I wanna back up just a little
- 11:15bit here. You mentioned how
- 11:17your strategy has to involve
- 11:19when it involves expansion,
- 11:21not diluting
- 11:22your services.
- 11:24So as
- 11:25that relates to recruiting, what what do you
- 11:28think, Skystride has found as as key to
- 11:30that process and being able to maintain that
- 11:32high level of care?
- 11:34Yeah. That's a great, question. And and, you
- 11:37know, when we we think about recruiting, so
- 11:39we're a pediatric provider. That's already,
- 11:42limits the the, you know, gene pool of
- 11:44potential candidates that, when you're looking for specific
- 11:47expertise.
- 11:48But then we're a pediatric orthopedic provider and
- 11:51really a a pediatric subspecialty
- 11:53provider.
- 11:54And, so recruiting physicians, not just orthopedic surgeons,
- 11:58but
- 11:59radiologists
- 12:00and anesthesiologists
- 12:01and neurologists,
- 12:03and and pediatricians,
- 12:05it's a real challenge.
- 12:07And, really, we do that in a couple
- 12:09different ways. Our our orthopedic surgeons in particular,
- 12:11we have the largest,
- 12:13pediatric fellowship
- 12:15for pediatric orthopedic fellowship in the country.
- 12:18And so we're an academic provider.
- 12:21We our academic partner is UT Southwestern here
- 12:24in in the Dallas area.
- 12:26And so every year, we have five pediatric
- 12:28orthopedic fellows who come in and train for
- 12:31a full year with us.
- 12:32And so,
- 12:34then we have we've now that that program
- 12:36is really starting in the seventies here. It's
- 12:38got a schreid. And so we now have
- 12:40over 200 pediatric orthopedic
- 12:42former fellows, alumni, essentially, that are out that
- 12:46have been shotgunned out really across the world
- 12:49and and, provide their expertise in their own
- 12:51regions.
- 12:52And, you know, usually, we're when we have
- 12:55a need here locally,
- 12:57we sort of thumb through the alumni book
- 13:00and, recruit some of our own alumni.
- 13:03But, we don't have that opportunity with all
- 13:05of our service lines. We we struggle just
- 13:07like everybody else in health care with anesthesia
- 13:10and radiology in particular.
- 13:12We've had some really good success this past
- 13:14year in really rebuilding our, pediatric radiology,
- 13:18musculoskeletal
- 13:19radiologist group. And I've had some, really nice,
- 13:23recruits who've come in and and really, you
- 13:25know, fit very well in the culture. And
- 13:27and, yes, what the the secret sauce is
- 13:29for us, it really is the culture,
- 13:31of our organization. It's it's a remarkable organization.
- 13:35It's not just pediatric, and I I think
- 13:36everybody enjoys walking around at children's hospital. But
- 13:40I always say that, Scott Schreit really attracts
- 13:42fantastic people in every single role,
- 13:45because and we look for individuals who are
- 13:47compassionate,
- 13:49who
- 13:50really, would do everything they possibly can to
- 13:53help every family and every patient that walks
- 13:54in the door.
- 13:56And, again, it's just just it's almost hard
- 13:59to describe, the culture in the field when
- 14:02you you get here. But I mentioned earlier,
- 14:04I was a volunteer thirty years ago, and
- 14:05that that's what you know, whatever it is,
- 14:07I got struck with it very early in
- 14:09my career and and, sort of made it
- 14:12a a mission to get back here and,
- 14:14you know, try and be part of this
- 14:15remarkable organization.
- 14:17No. It sounds like you're doing a lot
- 14:18of things right, Matt, to say the least.
- 14:21Shifting gears slightly here. So as we look
- 14:24ahead toward next year,
- 14:26what do you think is the hardest thing
- 14:27you're going to have to do in 2026?
- 14:31Well, again, another great question. It's kinda hard
- 14:34to narrow it down too, but, you know,
- 14:36it's it's probably wrong ticket. Right. You know,
- 14:38it's probably the hardest and the simplest thing
- 14:41all in the rolled up in the same,
- 14:43issue. And that's
- 14:45really just to make sure that we're,
- 14:47providing
- 14:48expert care and a fantastic experience
- 14:52to every single patient that walks in the
- 14:54door.
- 14:55We we've had, the, you know,
- 14:57really nice year this year and gotten lots
- 14:59of accolades for the care we provide.
- 15:02This year, we actually,
- 15:05we jointly submit for our pediatric orthopedic, submission
- 15:08to US News and World Report,
- 15:10with
- 15:11another children's hospital down the the street here
- 15:14in Dallas. And and, this year, we're ranked
- 15:17number one in The US News and World
- 15:18Report for pediatric orthopedics. We're proud of that.
- 15:22For the last eight years in a row
- 15:23now, we've received the highest pediatric hospital patient
- 15:27satisfaction awards.
- 15:28Same thing with employee satisfaction.
- 15:30And those are nice, but the reality is,
- 15:33in its confirmation of the, you know, the
- 15:36focus and the great care we provide. But
- 15:38the reality is it starts over again tomorrow.
- 15:42And so you gotta be sort of like
- 15:44a a, you know, a world class athlete
- 15:46and and keep on
- 15:48being obsessed again with excellence and how do
- 15:51you do better again tomorrow.
- 15:53And, again, that's that's the hardest thing and
- 15:55the simplest thing, in trying to motivate your
- 15:57staff to to come back and do things
- 15:59even better tomorrow.
- 16:01Matt, you mentioned that the organization has expanded
- 16:04a little bit here and there to to
- 16:06Frisco and know, some of the things you're
- 16:08doing in that,
- 16:09space.
- 16:10So lastly here, could you give us a
- 16:13glimpse of where you see the best opportunities
- 16:15for growth for Scottish Rite?
- 16:18Yeah. You know, I mentioned the population growth.
- 16:20So,
- 16:21really, the the opportunities are endless, you know,
- 16:24at this point.
- 16:25We we really do because we we, you
- 16:29know, are experts in what we do. We
- 16:31we do get, referrals really from all over
- 16:33the state, all over the country, and even
- 16:35international patients.
- 16:38And so,
- 16:40you know, really, what we try to do
- 16:42here is continue to,
- 16:45again, focus on access. And so, in the
- 16:47you know, so I've been here at Scratch
- 16:49right now for ten years. And during that
- 16:51ten year period, we have tripled the number
- 16:53of patients, we see.
- 16:55A lot of that is because of the
- 16:56fact that our Frisco campus opening up, but
- 16:59but the reality is every year, we we
- 17:01see
- 17:02pretty significant growth. And so,
- 17:05you know, we're we're absolutely to the point
- 17:08where we've gotta continue to look for ways,
- 17:11to provide care closer to the families who
- 17:14are coming to us.
- 17:15The challenge is because we're not a full
- 17:17service children's hospital, though, it doesn't make sense
- 17:21to have,
- 17:23an entire web of Scottish Rite hospitals,
- 17:26or even outpatient facilities,
- 17:29scattered across the state.
- 17:31Really, what we are are continuing to do
- 17:33is look for ways that we can provide
- 17:36very focused,
- 17:39locations with a a limited scope clinical scope,
- 17:42so that we can,
- 17:45patients and families in in other areas can
- 17:47can at least,
- 17:49see some of our providers and be screened.
- 17:51And then if they have a more complex,
- 17:53need, they can come to,
- 17:55the Dallas location or even Frisco for our
- 17:57sports medicine programs.
- 17:59Well, Matt, thank you so much for giving
- 18:01us a glimpse, a really detailed, but it's
- 18:04a wonderful glimpse into what Scottish Rite is
- 18:06all about and your efforts,
- 18:07not only with expansion, but just dealing with
