- 0:21I was sitting across from my friend Sarah last year and she was just completely
- 0:26overwhelmed by her daily schedule.
- 0:28And I had this color coded calendar system, you know, totally structured,
- 0:33and I just started laying it out.
- 0:35I was telling her, you need to block out eight AM to nine AM,
- 0:39and then do this, and then do that, and I just watched her eyes completely glaze
- 0:46over.
- 0:47It was like I was delivering a performance instead of just being there for her.
- 0:53Oh, the color coded calendar trap.
- 0:56Yeah, I know that one well.
- 0:58The moment we want to help, our brain flips this switch into instructor mode,
- 1:03right?
- 1:04Like we are trying to hand them a textbook instead of a hand to hold.
- 1:08Yes!
- 1:09Exactly.
- 1:10It felt so impersonal.
- 1:12She actually pulled away from me during that conversation, and I realized my
- 1:17structured advice, as well meaning as it was, just sounded like a rigid lecture.
- 1:23It completely shut down the connection we had.
- 1:26That is the lecturing trap in action.
- 1:29We lecture because it feels safe and controlled.
- 1:33But real influence and authentic human connection require us to step down from the
- 1:39soapbox.
- 1:40We actually designed one of our favorite PTT Music tracks, "By My Side,"
- 1:45around this very concept.
- 1:47I love that song so much.
- 1:49"By My Side" is really a sonic reminder of what it means to just be there.
- 1:56When we were working on the production, we deliberately avoided the domination
- 2:00pitfall, which is when flashy, heavy beats drown out the message.
- 2:04Instead, we used gentle acoustic tones and open spaces.
- 2:10It sounds like a comforting conversation.
- 2:12Exactly.
- 2:14The music is not trying to lecture you or force an emotion.
- 2:18It is simply walking alongside you.
- 2:21And in our relationships, that is exactly what people need.
- 2:25They do not need us to solve every problem with a neat, five step formula.
- 2:30They just want to know that we are by their side through the messy,
- 2:33uncertain parts of life.
- 2:35It is all about emotional intelligence and building trust.
- 2:39When we drop the lectures and choose authentic presence, we build mutual confidence
- 2:45and resilience.
- 2:46We are showing the other person that they do not have to be perfect to be valued.
- 2:52So true, Ava.
- 2:53So let us bridge that gap right now with our three practical action steps that
- 2:59everyone listening can immediately apply today.
- 3:02Step number one, the next time a friend comes to you with a challenge,
- 3:06resist the urge to lecture or offer instant calendar solutions.
- 3:11Instead, ask two open ended questions and just listen.
- 3:17Step number two, actively practice presence.
- 3:21If someone is going through a difficult season, reach out and let them know you are
- 3:25there for them.
- 3:26You do not need to have all the answers, just make it clear that you are standing by
- 3:31their side.
- 3:32And step number three, avoid the domination pitfall in your daily communication.
- 3:37Leave quiet pauses in your conversations so others have the space to feel heard and
- 3:43understood.
- 3:44So true.
- 3:46Think about how much lighter our conversations feel when we stop trying to prove a
- 3:51point or fix someone on the spot.
- 3:54Right!
- 3:54When you drop that heavy burden of having to be the expert,
- 3:58you can actually be present and appreciate who is in front of you.
- 4:02And that is where authentic trust is built.
- 4:05People remember how you made them feel when they were vulnerable,
- 4:09not the lecture you gave them.
- 4:11Exactly.
- 4:12That is the whole heart behind "By My Side.
- 4:15It is a constant reminder that love and support are verbs, demonstrated by standing
- 4:21together rather than talking down.
- 4:23Those pauses truly make all the difference.
- 4:27When we stop trying to control the narrative and focus on simply being present,
- 4:33we make room for real connection to grow.
- 4:36It is such a powerful shift.
- 4:38Whether through a thoughtful word, quiet listening, or a song like "By My Side,"
- 4:44choosing connection over lecturing transforms every relationship in our lives.
