- 0:09Speaker 3: you on Ruckus Avenue Radio.
- 0:15Speaker 4: Yo guys, it's your boy Insami and you're listening to
- 0:19Speaker 4: Ruckus Avenue Radio.
- 0:21Speaker 5: Hey guys, this is me Amal Malik and you're listening
- 0:23Speaker 5: to The Bridge with Sammy Charles on Ruckus Avenue Radio.
- 0:28Speaker 1: This is Purra and you're listening to The Bridge with
- 0:30Speaker 1: Sammy Chand on Ruckus Avenue Radio.
- 0:33Speaker 4: Sup!
- 0:36Speaker 6: Thank you very much for finding the signal wherever you
- 0:39Speaker 6: may be around the world. My name is Sammy Chand
- 0:44Speaker 6: and you have found an October 27th edition of The Bridge.
- 0:51Speaker 7: Really excited about today's show. You picked a great hour
- 0:54Speaker 7: to join us.
- 0:57Speaker 6: We'll be joined today by Indian cinema star Kalki Kekla.
- 1:03Speaker 6: And Kalki is in a brand new film called Her Story.
- 1:08Speaker 6: It's an American film. And Kalki is joining us today
- 1:12Speaker 6: to tell us about it. She plays a New York
- 1:18Speaker 6: novelist who goes back to her grandmother's village in France.
- 1:23Speaker 6: And for the role, the director asked her to speak French.
- 1:27Speaker 6: The language she grew up with, but in this particular case,
- 1:30Speaker 6: to put on an American accent. And I think that's
- 1:34Speaker 6: pretty funny, given the fact that her parents are French,
- 1:37Speaker 6: and even though she was born in Pondicherry, to kind
- 1:40Speaker 6: of reverse that role of, you know, having an American
- 1:45Speaker 6: accent in her French.
- 1:46Speaker 7: It's pretty interesting. We'll talk to Kalki about that today.
- 1:52Speaker 6: Kalki Kekle, coming up today. Got a big program as
- 1:59Speaker 6: we do every Tuesday here on the show. We'll be
- 2:01Speaker 6: joined by Nish Riaz. And Nish will be previewing his
- 2:05Speaker 6: show coming up today at 8 p.m.
- 2:08Speaker 7: Eastern Standard Time.
- 2:09Speaker 6: It's called The Garage Mahal.
- 2:12Speaker 7: Pull up. Check it out. A lot going on, of course,
- 2:18Speaker 7: across the signal.
- 2:19Speaker 6: Tomorrow we'll be joined by Malvika. Thursday we'll be joined
- 2:24Speaker 6: by Arshdeep Maan on the show. It's a big week
- 2:28Speaker 6: on the bridge. But today, Kalki Kekla is in the house.
- 2:33Speaker 6: Stand by for Kalki in a bit. Got a bunch
- 2:36Speaker 6: of music to deliver to you. And we're going to
- 2:38Speaker 6: begin with this song called Kante. One of our favorites
- 2:42Speaker 6: here on the show. It's by an artist named Jasmanek.
- 2:45Speaker 7: Welcome to the bridge.
- 2:47Speaker 8: Welcome to the bridge.
- 3:17Speaker 2: Oh, oh, oh.
- 3:45Speaker 9: I made a mistake and saw.
- 3:47Speaker 10: That I was trapped in it. I made a mistake and.
- 3:55Speaker 9: Saw that I was trapped in it. Now I have
- 3:57Speaker 9: left the job and I am wearing a mule.
- 4:00Speaker 11: I made a mistake and saw that I was trapped
- 4:04Speaker 11: in it.
- 4:04Speaker 9: Now I have.
- 4:04Speaker 12: Left the job and I am wearing a mule. Hey,
- 4:14Speaker 12: my love, my life depends on you, my love.
- 4:17Speaker 9: Don't leave me, my love. Don't leave me, my love.
- 4:21Speaker 9: Don't leave me, my love.
- 4:40Speaker 6: I'm going to be joined today by Kalki.
- 4:58Speaker 7: Very excited about that.
- 4:59Speaker 6: And, you know, you get the feeling that Indian cinema
- 5:03Speaker 6: has spent 30 years telling stories about Indians going abroad.
- 5:06Speaker 6: But the film that she's in today flips that scenario.
- 5:10Speaker 6: It's an Indian.
- 5:10Speaker 7: Star goes west to play a westerner going home. It's
- 5:14Speaker 7: pretty interesting.
- 5:15Speaker 13: I'm a traveler, I'm a prisoner in a cage. I'm
- 5:19Speaker 13: a master of hearts, I don't have money.
- 5:21Speaker 9: In my pockets.
- 5:23Speaker 13: I'll share whatever is mine, whatever you tell me.
- 5:25Speaker 9: I'm the bride of God, your heart.
- 5:27Speaker 14: Is like a bird.
- 5:32Speaker 9: Thank you for watching.
- 5:48Speaker 2: How can I be the one who hasn't found love
- 5:50Speaker 2: in so long?
- 5:51Speaker 3: What has happened has happened, how much will you fear?
- 5:56Speaker 3: Will you stop me? Will you remove me? Will you
- 6:06Speaker 3: burn yourself?
- 6:08Speaker 9: From you to you, this is the battle.
- 6:11Speaker 15: From you to you, we will be the end.
- 6:15Speaker 2: What kind of magic.
- 6:16Speaker 9: Did you do?
- 6:16Speaker 16: Peelu main zeher yeh tera Aaj bhi yeh sochu shaid
- 6:20Speaker 16: Tere dil mein shaamil main tha Toldo bharmiyeh mera Bin
- 6:25Speaker 16: tere naar ab bhi mera Aadha hi raha hu main
- 6:28Speaker 16: to Aadha hi bana le tera Kaisi hai bimari hai Tum.
- 6:33Speaker 13: Se hi paayi hai Vanda gale pe.
- 6:37Speaker 9: Tha Durisi tumhari hai Kaisi.
- 6:40Speaker 13: Hai lachari hai Sir pe tabaayi hai Kapde humare hai
- 6:46Speaker 13: Khushbu tumhari hai Kaisa hoon jo isht na mera hai
- 6:50Speaker 13: Itne arso se Ab jo ho gaya ho kho gaya
- 6:54Speaker 13: hai Kitna tersoge Maatam manahogay kya Artikan hatahogay kya Jut
- 7:00Speaker 13: ko jala.
- 7:04Speaker 2: The artist's name is Nayaam.
- 7:32Speaker 7: The song is called Tum Se Tum Tak.
- 7:35Speaker 6: A couple of favorites of our show here to kick
- 7:37Speaker 6: off our Tuesday episode. We'll be joined by Kalki Keklen,
- 7:42Speaker 6: as I mentioned to you, so make sure you stand
- 7:43Speaker 6: by for that.
- 7:45Speaker 7: This song is called Pablo. It's by Hania Amir.
- 7:51Speaker 17: They say it's their duty to be so beautiful. They
- 7:56Speaker 17: ask me, where do you get your drugs?
- 7:58Speaker 2: They say, you keep them in big bags.
- 8:00Speaker 7: We laugh and you follow us.
- 8:01Speaker 2: We shout and.
- 8:02Speaker 9: Mess with you every day.
- 8:04Speaker 17: How many times have we stayed in your arms? When
- 8:07Speaker 17: there's no drugs left, we're gone.
- 8:09Speaker 7: My God and my God, my God, my.
- 8:12Speaker 17: God What should I do?
- 8:19Speaker 10: .
- 8:23Speaker 18: I don't know what to do without my fans Why
- 8:28Speaker 18: is the environment so scary when I'm alone?
- 8:32Speaker 19: All of India is waiting for you to come I
- 8:35Speaker 19: keep my friends and my friends alone I don't know
- 8:37Speaker 19: what to do without my friends I don't know what

- 8:44Speaker 17: What to do without my friends I don't know what
- 8:49Speaker 17: to do without my friends.
- 8:52Speaker 7: I'm sick of you, you're a crutch, you're a crutch So.
- 8:55Speaker 17: Beautiful, that's what they say Ask me, where did you
- 8:57Speaker 17: get the drugs from? They say, you kept it in
- 8:59Speaker 17: a big bag We laugh, you follow us, we shout
- 9:01Speaker 17: at each.
- 9:02Speaker 7: Other every day How.
- 9:03Speaker 15: Many times have we stayed in the same place?
- 9:06Speaker 17: Half of Rashid and the rest of the kids are
- 9:08Speaker 17: very deep God bless you, may God keep you safe.
- 9:17Speaker 20: I love the energy of that track right there.
- 9:21Speaker 9: It's a lot of fun.
- 9:43Speaker 7: Very excited about today's interview.
- 9:45Speaker 6: And as you can imagine, putting together questions for somebody
- 9:49Speaker 6: like Kalki is a very interesting job because you're covering
- 9:52Speaker 6: not only the film that she is so deeply entrenched
- 9:55Speaker 6: in right now called Her Song, but also wanted to
- 9:59Speaker 6: catch a little bit about her story as well today.
- 10:02Speaker 6: So I'll make sure that I dive into some of
- 10:04Speaker 6: the actual things that made Kalki Kalki and talk a
- 10:07Speaker 6: little bit about her story today. Excited about that conversation,
- 10:11Speaker 6: so make sure you stand by. And now folks, let's

- 29:08Speaker 6: And ladies and gentlemen, it is my distinct pleasure and
- 29:12Speaker 6: certainly an honor to bring into.
- 29:13Speaker 7: The show the one Kalki Kekla. How are you, Kalki?
- 29:18Speaker 4: I'm good, Sammy. How are you doing?
- 29:19Speaker 25: Good.
- 29:20Speaker 6: Well, it's been 10 years since we last ran into
- 29:23Speaker 6: each other back at the Indian Film Festival of LA.
- 29:26Speaker 7: How have you been? Good to see you back in
- 29:27Speaker 7: Los Angeles.
- 29:30Speaker 6: Yeah, you know, we wanted to begin by just congratulating
- 29:35Speaker 6: you and all the great work you've been doing and
- 29:37Speaker 6: always the fans of your work here in LA. And
- 29:40Speaker 6: good to see you here in LA for your brand
- 29:42Speaker 6: new film here called Her Song. And we're looking forward
- 29:45Speaker 6: to seeing it at the Limley in Encino this week.
- 29:48Speaker 6: But I want to begin back in 2016. You were
- 29:52Speaker 6: here for a movie called Waiting with Nasruddin Shah. And
- 29:56Speaker 6: here you are 10 years later. I guess I should
- 29:59Speaker 6: ask you this question because you have the breadth of
- 30:02Speaker 6: being in this business for such a while. How much
- 30:04Speaker 6: has changed in these last 10 years since you were
- 30:06Speaker 6: last in LA with this project?
- 30:10Speaker 4: How much has changed in my life? Well, just in
- 30:12Speaker 4: the business as well. I became a mother.
- 30:14Speaker 2: Yeah, that too.
- 30:15Speaker 7: Tell us, tell us.
- 30:17Speaker 27: Yeah, becoming a mother is like shedding your old skin and,
- 30:21Speaker 27: you know, you're like a You know, you have a new,
- 30:25Speaker 27: completely new personality, I think.
- 30:27Speaker 4: That comes with being a mother.
- 30:29Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 30:30Speaker 4: So there's that. And it's been very impactful.
- 30:35Speaker 27: I think I kind of wrote this book called The
- 30:40Speaker 27: Elephant in the Womb, which is all about the raw,
- 30:43Speaker 27: you know, difficult parts of pregnancy and postpartum that people
- 30:46Speaker 27: don't speak about.
- 30:47Speaker 17: Right.
- 30:48Speaker 4: So, yeah, that was a big one for me. What
- 30:52Speaker 4: else has changed? I guess.
- 30:55Speaker 27: You know, that's also when things started to change in
- 30:58Speaker 27: terms of the industry going from movies to platforms like
- 31:03Speaker 27: Netflix and Amazon.
- 31:03Speaker 4: That's right. So there's a lot more of.
- 31:06Speaker 27: That that's happened since. You know, I think really around
- 31:10Speaker 27: 2016 is when all these platforms started to grow in
- 31:15Speaker 27: India and we, you know, we had, I had Sacred
- 31:17Speaker 27: Games and Made in Heaven and now there's Unearthed coming.
- 31:21Speaker 4: So yeah, it's.
- 31:23Speaker 27: Exciting to work in a platform because you do so
- 31:28Speaker 27: much more like a series is like what eight episodes
- 31:31Speaker 27: and then you get to really kind of dive into
- 31:33Speaker 27: the character uh to another level um the opportunity to
- 31:39Speaker 27: do that has been great um yeah but at the
- 31:42Speaker 27: same time it is such a luxury to have a
- 31:45Speaker 27: film released in the cinemas you know like her song
- 31:48Speaker 27: is doing right now because it doesn't happen very often.
- 31:50Speaker 6: It does not it does not so it only speaks
- 31:53Speaker 6: to how special this film is and we'll get into
- 31:55Speaker 6: that in a second here but I look at your work,
- 31:58Speaker 6: and of course, you're referring to your brand new project
- 32:00Speaker 6: here called Her Song. And you also just made reference
- 32:02Speaker 6: to a brand new project from what I understand is
- 32:04Speaker 6: coming out on Amazon called Anarth.
- 32:07Speaker 7: But when you.
- 32:08Speaker 6: Refer to these projects, they're quite bicultural in nature. And
- 32:12Speaker 6: sometimes I feel like we get put in this place
- 32:15Speaker 6: where we're not Indian enough or the the outside U
- 32:19Speaker 6: S or France or wherever we were from. And in France,
- 32:21Speaker 6: we're not quite French enough, but you've done something remarkable
- 32:24Speaker 6: where you've turned that into somewhat of a superpower here.
- 32:27Speaker 6: And I think it's something that everybody can learn from,
- 32:30Speaker 6: but you.
- 32:30Speaker 7: Know, how did you do that? How, how were you able.
- 32:33Speaker 6: To overcome something that I feel like a lot of
- 32:35Speaker 6: people here kind of have to deal with in the
- 32:37Speaker 6: bicultural sense?
- 32:39Speaker 27: I mean, it's just part of my grand plan to
- 32:41Speaker 27: take over the world. I mean, I, I mean, you
- 32:48Speaker 27: can't plan anything, really. These things just happen to you,
- 32:51Speaker 27: you know. I feel I'm very lucky. I'm very lucky
- 32:55Speaker 27: to have, you know, this sort of bilingual, multicultural family
- 33:03Speaker 27: and grow up with, you know, this very mixed culture.
- 33:07Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 33:10Speaker 27: And the fact that I get to expose that in
- 33:12Speaker 27: my work is just really the icing on the cake. I,
- 33:17Speaker 27: I love, uh, I love, I love that about, it's
- 33:22Speaker 27: true that it's not always easy to like, have to
- 33:25Speaker 27: explain yourself. You know, I think a lot of people
- 33:28Speaker 27: who are bicultural have that frustration.
- 33:30Speaker 14: That's right.
- 33:32Speaker 27: You know, they'll be like, no, but you don't look
- 33:33Speaker 27: like you're from here. But where are you really from?
- 33:37Speaker 4: Right.
- 33:38Speaker 27: And those type of questions that is frustrating to live with.
- 33:41Speaker 4: But at the same time, yeah, I've really.
- 33:46Speaker 4: I mean, with this film, I've.
- 33:49Speaker 27: Gotten to explore the French side for the first time.
- 33:54Speaker 27: And it's really exciting to do that. And I think
- 33:58Speaker 27: even in this film, I am playing the outsider. I'm
- 34:01Speaker 27: playing this character called Olivia, who's American, and whose grandmother
- 34:05Speaker 27: is from this little French village. So she is really
- 34:08Speaker 27: the outsider going in to find out more about her
- 34:13Speaker 27: past and her family's past. And so I can relate
- 34:17Speaker 27: to that. I feel like I'm always the outsider, but
- 34:20Speaker 27: it also makes me able to be in such different contexts.
- 34:24Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 34:26Speaker 4: It's a blessing.
- 34:27Speaker 7: It is.
- 34:28Speaker 6: Yeah. I think one of my favorite cross-cultural references, and
- 34:33Speaker 6: not to make this too much of a conversation here,
- 34:34Speaker 6: but one of my favorite cross-cultural references you made was
- 34:38Speaker 6: you referred to the Western set to be so much
- 34:41Speaker 6: more shanth, than our sets back in India. And I
- 34:44Speaker 6: thought that was one of the funniest references ever.
- 34:46Speaker 7: I was like, you know what? That's spot on right there.
- 34:48Speaker 7: They're so chaotic.
- 34:49Speaker 27: What's that?
- 34:49Speaker 4: I didn't hear that.
- 34:51Speaker 6: I say one of my favorite references that you've ever
- 34:53Speaker 6: made in terms of the bicultural thing was something that
- 34:55Speaker 6: you said was really funny to me, which was you
- 34:58Speaker 6: referred to to the Western set as being very shant
- 35:02Speaker 6: compared to the Indian movie set. And I just laughed
- 35:06Speaker 6: when I saw that. And I, you know, it's so true.
- 35:09Speaker 6: I mean, you can open up a window here in
- 35:10Speaker 6: Los Angeles and it's so quiet and you can't get
- 35:13Speaker 6: away with that in India.
- 35:15Speaker 4: No, no, exactly.
- 35:17Speaker 27: I mean, it's really, it's a very different atmosphere when
- 35:21Speaker 27: you're shooting with like 10,000.
- 35:24Speaker 4: People screaming on set.
- 35:26Speaker 27: And then when you come to a film in the
- 35:28Speaker 27: south of France where you literally, there's not like, you
- 35:31Speaker 27: don't see a human for miles if you're walking in
- 35:34Speaker 27: the countryside.
- 35:35Speaker 4: It is quite a different shift.
- 35:38Speaker 6: Kaki, have you ever looked at Indian cinema and said,
- 35:40Speaker 6: you know what, I would love to translate this film
- 35:43Speaker 6: into French? And have you ever, and has there ever
- 35:46Speaker 6: been a film where you're like, you know what, this
- 35:48Speaker 6: is going to do really well. And if you were
- 35:50Speaker 6: to make that film, What is one consistent ingredient that
- 35:54Speaker 6: you find in Indian cinema that you'd probably have to
- 35:57Speaker 6: take out for a French audience?
- 35:59Speaker 4: Oh my goodness.
- 36:01Speaker 27: Now you're giving, firstly, you've given me ideas of like
- 36:04Speaker 27: taking a good Indian film.
- 36:06Speaker 6: Call me after the film, Kalki, let's get to work
- 36:08Speaker 6: on this.
- 36:09Speaker 27: And remaking it, you know, because most of the time
- 36:11Speaker 27: it happens the other way around, right?
- 36:13Speaker 4: We get like, Foreign films that Indians remake.
- 36:16Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 36:17Speaker 4: But, um, yeah. Oh, what film would I remake from India?
- 36:21Speaker 27: Um, maybe Piazza. I don't know if you've seen Piazza.
- 36:26Speaker 27: It's like a, it's an old, uh, Guruda black.
- 36:30Speaker 4: And white film.
- 36:31Speaker 7: That's right.
- 36:31Speaker 27: With an incredible music score, incredible song. Um, and it's,
- 36:37Speaker 27: it's like probably one of the most romantic movies in
- 36:40Speaker 27: my experience, um, that ever was made. Um, and I
- 36:45Speaker 27: really I love it I love that movie so I
- 36:47Speaker 27: would love to make a piazza in a French context
- 36:52Speaker 27: or like in a European context.
- 36:54Speaker 4: It would be really interesting.
- 36:56Speaker 27: Yeah yeah it would have to of course it would
- 36:58Speaker 27: have to what would have to change I guess I
- 37:01Speaker 27: wouldn't be able to put three hours of songs in
- 37:04Speaker 27: it because the film is three hours long with a
- 37:07Speaker 27: lot like there's a song every five minutes you know
- 37:11Speaker 27: i'm not sure the audience is ready for that much
- 37:13Speaker 27: but i would definitely it would maybe i would have
- 37:16Speaker 27: to make a musical or something like find a way
- 37:19Speaker 27: to to make the music part of the storytelling you
- 37:22Speaker 27: know yeah and yeah it's but you're getting giving me
- 37:26Speaker 27: ideas i think i am.
- 37:27Speaker 6: I think i can hear you thinking here it's really
- 37:29Speaker 6: interesting yeah this this character you play in her song,
- 37:34Speaker 6: incredibly layered. And I, listen, I think everybody, you can
- 37:37Speaker 6: ask this to many actors and they would say the
- 37:39Speaker 6: same thing, but I feel like this to be really
- 37:41Speaker 6: genuine when it comes to you. I feel like there
- 37:44Speaker 6: are these textures and layers to your character that I
- 37:47Speaker 6: believe that I'm just getting to kind of know you
- 37:49Speaker 6: here and in my work and researching you and knowing
- 37:52Speaker 6: your work in the years. I get a feeling that
- 37:54Speaker 6: this is intentional, that you look for these roles that
- 37:57Speaker 6: ask for something more of you and that you try
- 37:59Speaker 6: to voice something that maybe doesn't exist out there. Is
- 38:02Speaker 6: that intentional or is it, again, part of your master
- 38:05Speaker 6: plan to take over the world?
- 38:06Speaker 7: Or is it kind of incidental? Like, tell me, what's
- 38:09Speaker 7: going on here?
- 38:11Speaker 27: I think, of course, there's a part of me that's
- 38:16Speaker 27: curious and wants to always explore the things which are
- 38:21Speaker 27: going to push my own boundaries. So when I get
- 38:24Speaker 27: a talent, like, oh my goodness, I'm going to have
- 38:26Speaker 27: to speak another language and I'm going to have to
- 38:29Speaker 27: learn a new.
- 38:30Speaker 4: Accent at that point.
- 38:32Speaker 27: Already very exciting for me um and I think you
- 38:35Speaker 27: also attract the kind of energy you put out there
- 38:39Speaker 27: so you know more and more people know that that's
- 38:42Speaker 27: the kind of work I look for where I get
- 38:44Speaker 27: pushed in different directions um you know if there's a
- 38:49Speaker 27: stereotype I think my stereotype is that I can't I
- 38:53Speaker 27: can't stick to one genre and I can't stick to
- 38:55Speaker 27: one thing um and so I yeah I feel like
- 39:02Speaker 27: I need to be growing in some way. And of course,
- 39:08Speaker 27: it works both ways. People see the kind of work
- 39:11Speaker 27: you do and they approach you because you do that
- 39:14Speaker 27: kind of work. Yeah. But having said that, I'd love
- 39:18Speaker 27: to do just like an awesome action movie or something.
- 39:23Speaker 27: Nobody's offered me that kick-ass action movie.
- 39:25Speaker 6: Kalki, I can see it happening now. So I think
- 39:28Speaker 6: we're going to redo an interview film into French with
- 39:31Speaker 6: you being an action star in there. I think we're
- 39:33Speaker 6: slowly putting a film together here. I can hear it.
- 39:36Speaker 7: I can hear it. Good.
- 39:38Speaker 6: Your role is Olivia, a New York-based Franco-American novelist who
- 39:43Speaker 6: returns to her grandmother's village in the French Pyrenees to
- 39:45Speaker 6: finish a book about her grandmother. It's really interesting because
- 39:50Speaker 6: the film's tagline is history is a lazy plagiarist, right?
- 39:54Speaker 6: Which was, for those of us that haven't got to
- 39:57Speaker 6: see the film or aren't quite, tell us about this
- 40:00Speaker 6: part of the film. Tell us about her journey to
- 40:02Speaker 6: go back and capture this story about her grandmother and
- 40:05Speaker 6: what compels her to it. And for most importantly, what
- 40:08Speaker 6: do you pick up from this film in terms of
- 40:10Speaker 6: your role playing Olivia here?
- 40:13Speaker 27: So, yeah, the story follows this character who is a
- 40:17Speaker 27: writer and she goes back to her ancestral village to
- 40:21Speaker 27: write a book on her grandmother who survived World War II.
- 40:26Speaker 27: But when she goes back, the pandemic hits and she's
- 40:30Speaker 27: stuck in the village. the same way that her grandmother
- 40:33Speaker 27: was stuck in the village when the Nazis arrived and
- 40:36Speaker 27: occupied France.
- 40:37Speaker 4: So it's kind of.
- 40:38Speaker 27: This parallel world that starts to happen to her as
- 40:41Speaker 27: she's writing the story. And what John has done is,
- 40:45Speaker 27: these are quite dark topics. I mean, they could be
- 40:48Speaker 27: very dark. And he's kind of found comedy and a
- 40:51Speaker 27: dark comedy in all of it.
- 40:53Speaker 4: Right.
- 40:54Speaker 27: And find these, like, strange parallels. You know, like, they
- 40:58Speaker 27: ran out of... writing paper during World War II. People
- 41:02Speaker 27: couldn't write letters to each other. And in the pandemic,
- 41:06Speaker 27: we ran.
- 41:06Speaker 4: Out of toilet paper.
- 41:08Speaker 27: You know, so he was making these funny parallels and
- 41:11Speaker 27: strange parallels. So it's a really quirky, very unique concept.
- 41:16Speaker 27: You know, nobody else could have written it but John Geller.
- 41:19Speaker 27: And I love that about it. And especially because in
- 41:21Speaker 27: my career, I haven't had that much opportunity to do comedy.
- 41:25Speaker 7: Right.
- 41:26Speaker 27: I do a lot of thriller. I do a lot
- 41:27Speaker 27: of drama in theater. I do a little comedy, but
- 41:32Speaker 27: I've never done that much comedy in film. So that
- 41:35Speaker 27: was another, you know, big, exciting thing for me.
- 41:39Speaker 7: Yeah, that's it seems like a.
- 41:41Speaker 6: A role that, again, pulled on your passion and pulled
- 41:44Speaker 6: out a different side of you. And again, in a
- 41:46Speaker 6: very important context of telling a story in history, nonetheless. Kalki,
- 41:51Speaker 6: there's this sense that Anarth here, a brand new series
- 41:55Speaker 6: that's coming out on Amazon, seems to be in line
- 41:58Speaker 6: with what I think a lot of great actors are
- 42:01Speaker 6: doing right now. They're taking this long form and they're
- 42:04Speaker 6: allowing that to bring out more texture and more layers
- 42:07Speaker 6: of the characters that they portray. How excited are you
- 42:11Speaker 6: about this role that you're playing in Anart?
- 42:15Speaker 4: Yes, I am very excited. It's quite an intense role.
- 42:22Speaker 27: And, you know, I can't say too much about it
- 42:27Speaker 27: at this point because, you know, it reveals too much.
- 42:32Speaker 27: But it's a very dark story. It's a demon world. It's,
- 42:37Speaker 27: you know, supernatural.
- 42:39Speaker 4: And it definitely.
- 42:43Speaker 27: It's the writer and the director, Ananya Banerjee is, you know,
- 42:47Speaker 27: I think having a female perspective has given it quite
- 42:51Speaker 27: an edge. And so this, you know, this character that
- 42:55Speaker 27: I play, the female protagonist has a very strong, how
- 42:59Speaker 27: would I say, link there. to the supernatural. She has
- 43:04Speaker 27: a good reason to go there. You know, to sort
- 43:07Speaker 27: of go into things which she probably wouldn't if something
- 43:12Speaker 27: terrible hadn't happened to her.
- 43:13Speaker 4: So it's very nice and.
- 43:18Speaker 27: Well written and I am excited to see how the
- 43:21Speaker 27: audience will react because I don't think we've seen a
- 43:23Speaker 27: horror of this kind in India. I think we see
- 43:26Speaker 27: a lot of like ghost stories. We see a lot
- 43:30Speaker 27: of kind of Yeah, like traditional scared kind of thing.
- 43:36Speaker 27: But a kind of psychic landscape that this film explores
- 43:40Speaker 27: is quite unique and quite feminine, I would say.
- 43:43Speaker 6: This is going to be exciting to see you in
- 43:44Speaker 6: this role. It sounds very, very vibrant indeed. You know, Kalki,
- 43:49Speaker 6: before we let you go, we have one last question.
- 43:51Speaker 6: It's one of my favorite questions to ask the guests
- 43:53Speaker 6: that come to the show here. It refers back to
- 43:57Speaker 6: the little girl that you once were back in Pondicherry who...
- 44:01Speaker 6: had no idea and probably looks at the woman that
- 44:05Speaker 6: you have become with wide eyes and says, wow, I
- 44:09Speaker 6: can't believe she is who she is. My question to
- 44:12Speaker 6: you is this, what advice would you give that young
- 44:15Speaker 6: girl that was growing up back then in terms of
- 44:18Speaker 6: how she should take on life?
- 44:22Speaker 4: Oh boy. I feel like crying.
- 44:26Speaker 27: I feel like that's, um, I think not enough people like, Yeah,
- 44:32Speaker 27: that's a good question. Not enough people think back at
- 44:35Speaker 27: where they started. You know, once they become famous or
- 44:39Speaker 27: they become, they don't look back.
- 44:43Speaker 4: And I think I.
- 44:44Speaker 27: Would love to just hug that little me and be like,
- 44:48Speaker 27: you know, be proud of your differences.
- 44:51Speaker 4: Be proud of being different.
- 44:55Speaker 27: Because when you're little, you just kind of want to
- 44:57Speaker 27: blend into the crowd and be like everyone else and
- 45:01Speaker 27: And yeah, I think she could use a nice big
- 45:04Speaker 27: hug from a woman like me.
- 45:08Speaker 7: That's beautiful.
- 45:09Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 45:09Speaker 6: That's one of my favorite answers. I've asked that question
- 45:12Speaker 6: to a lot of folks, but that's really nice.
- 45:14Speaker 4: Yeah, it's a good question. I'm glad you're asking people.
- 45:18Speaker 6: Kalki, thank you so much for spending time with us
- 45:20Speaker 6: here on the bridge. Thank you so much for talking
- 45:22Speaker 6: to us. and for all the great work that you're

- 45:28Speaker 6: we're all going to pull up this week to Encino
- 45:30Speaker 6: to come see the brand-new film, her song, at the
- 45:33Speaker 6: Lemley Theatre's Kalki Keklin. Thanks so much for joining us today.
- 45:38Speaker 4: Thank you so much, Sammy. It was great to speak
- 45:40Speaker 4: to you today.

- 49:19Speaker 8: What a fabulous conversation.
- 49:23Speaker 4: That was and.
- 49:39Speaker 6: She was so open and so warm and I want
- 49:43Speaker 6: to give a big shout out to her. We'll be
- 49:45Speaker 6: back in a little bit. I'll deliver some closing remarks
- 49:48Speaker 6: on that conversation as well for you. But now let's
- 49:52Speaker 6: bring in Doita Dasgupta to the program who has today's
- 49:56Speaker 6: artist spotlight for you. What's up, Doita?
- 49:59Speaker 4: Thanks, Sammy.
- 49:59Speaker 10: Hi, everyone.
- 50:00Speaker 14: This is Doita Dasgupta, your Ruckus Avenue radio music correspondent,
- 50:04Speaker 14: back with some fun facts about your favorite artists. Did
- 50:06Speaker 14: you know that Vishal Mishra has been rejected from nearly
- 50:09Speaker 14: all his auditions? He auditioned for Indian Idol multiple times
- 50:13Speaker 14: and was finally selected in Season 6. However, Vishal Mishra
- 50:17Speaker 14: said that the best thing that Indian Idol and other
- 50:19Speaker 14: singing reality shows did for him was to reject him,
- 50:22Speaker 14: which made him try even harder to be better and
- 50:25Speaker 14: eventually granting him success. It is like what people say,
- 50:28Speaker 14: success doesn't teach you, failure does.
- 50:31Speaker 4: Well, that's all from me.
- 50:33Speaker 9: Now back to you, Sammy.
- 50:34Speaker 7: Thank you, Doita. Thank you so much.
- 50:35Speaker 6: This is Vishal Mishra's brand new song with Hanita Bhamri
- 50:40Speaker 6: called Toxic.
- 50:45Speaker 28: Like a fool, when you crashed into me, fool My cards,
- 50:52Speaker 28: you win, took the bait on what you think.
- 50:57Speaker 10: That you're the.
- 51:00Speaker 2: One, it's just the.
- 51:04Speaker 10: Rules So hand me the gun, my love, I'll never shoot.
- 51:11Speaker 9: Oh, you're the enemy. Can you set me free? You're
- 51:15Speaker 9: the drug I want. I'm addicted, baby.
- 51:20Speaker 28: All you need is a taste of me.
- 51:23Speaker 2: But I'm coming too close. I'll burn your lies. It's
- 51:27Speaker 2: dangerous falling. For me, I'm.
- 51:31Speaker 15: The drug you want You're addicted, baby Close your eyes,
- 51:36Speaker 15: I'll be your demise Let me hold you, hold you,
- 51:39Speaker 15: hold you tight Love is just a game When you gotta.
- 51:41Speaker 2: Play Love is just a game.
- 52:31Speaker 28: You're addicted, so addicted, baby.
- 53:02Speaker 7: Vishal Mishra, Hanit Abhamri.
- 53:05Speaker 6: The song is called Toxic. And it was great talking
- 53:08Speaker 6: to Hanit Abhamri here on the show. And she explained
- 53:11Speaker 6: that exact moment when she got to find out she's
- 53:14Speaker 6: going to be collaborating with Vishal Mishra on the title
- 53:16Speaker 6: track of a film called Toxic. How about that for
- 53:19Speaker 6: a moment in life? This song is called Knock Knock.
- 53:23Speaker 6: It's by Jaggi. I'll be back with my closing remarks
- 53:26Speaker 6: on Kalki K-Klan.
- 53:51Speaker 5: I don't know what to do with my life I
- 53:54Speaker 5: don't know what to do with my life I don't
- 53:58Speaker 5: know what to do with my life.
- 54:16Speaker 9: Cast a mask on the plate, don't cry to those
- 54:18Speaker 9: who ate.
- 54:18Speaker 5: It People are jealous of me, they call me a
- 54:21Speaker 5: mother They say I'm a little empty with a stick,
- 54:23Speaker 5: that's the money I got to eat I don't have
- 54:26Speaker 5: a name, I'm a bitch, and I'm the world's sister-in-law.
- 54:31Speaker 9: And what will you do with your sister? You will
- 54:33Speaker 9: go to the.
- 54:34Speaker 5: Shop and you will not get the money for the
- 54:36Speaker 5: whole evening.
- 54:36Speaker 2: Raja Raji is not your brother-in-law.
- 54:37Speaker 7: You will go to the shop and you will not get.
- 54:39Speaker 5: The money for the whole evening.
- 54:58Speaker 5: You know, show up and knock on the door.
- 55:01Speaker 9: That's the best way to go. Song is called.
- 55:28Speaker 7: Knock, knock. It's by the artist named Jaggi. And I
- 55:32Speaker 7: want to give a big.
- 55:33Speaker 6: Shout out to Kalki Keklen for joining us today. And
- 55:36Speaker 6: let me tell you guys what you just heard. Ten
- 55:40Speaker 6: years ago, Kalki and I were in Los Angeles for waiting.
- 55:45Speaker 6: Since then, she became a mother and wrote a whole
- 55:47Speaker 6: book about it. The Elephant in the Womb. About the
- 55:51Speaker 6: parts of pregnancy and postpartum nobody talks about.
- 55:54Speaker 7: Her words.
- 55:55Speaker 6: Becoming a mother is like shedding your old skin. She's
- 55:59Speaker 6: the French girl from Pondicherry who spent her life hearing,
- 56:03Speaker 6: but where are you really from? And instead of fighting.
- 56:06Speaker 7: It, she plays it. In her song, she's Olivia, the.
- 56:11Speaker 6: Outsider who goes back to her grandmother's village in France
- 56:15Speaker 6: and gets stuck there when the pandemic hits, the same
- 56:18Speaker 6: way her grandmother got stuck when the Nazis came. In
- 56:22Speaker 6: World War II, they ran out of writing paper. In
- 56:26Speaker 6: the pandemic, we ran out of toilet paper.
- 56:29Speaker 7: That's the joke. And that's the film. Her real first comedy.
- 56:34Speaker 6: She wants to remake Biasa in French. And she's still
- 56:38Speaker 6: waiting for somebody to offer her a kick-ass action movie. Producers,
- 56:42Speaker 6: you heard it here first, folks. Next up for her
- 56:45Speaker 6: is Anarth on Amazon. A supernatural story told from a
- 56:49Speaker 6: woman's point of view. And when I asked her what
- 56:52Speaker 6: she'd tell the little girl in Pondicherry... She said she
- 56:55Speaker 6: felt like crying. And then she'd said she'd give her
- 56:58Speaker 6: a big hug and tell her, be proud of your differences.
- 57:02Speaker 6: Every one of us who grew up trying to blend
- 57:05Speaker 6: in needed to hear that. And you heard it here
- 57:08Speaker 6: on the bridge. Tomorrow we'll be joined by Malvika, and
- 57:11Speaker 6: Thursday we'll be joined by Arshdeep Maan.
- 57:14Speaker 7: Have a great day, everybody.
- 57:17Speaker 29: Mujh mein hai.
- 57:20Speaker 30: Khaak teri rooh teri husn tera Tu juda honke bhi
- 57:36Speaker 30: rehta hai.
- 57:38Speaker 20: Kaha mujh se juda.
- 57:44Speaker 29: Main nahi dekhun toh ayna tera jalwa nazal Main nahi
- 57:58Speaker 29: tere bina.
- 58:02Speaker 2: Tu bhi.
- 58:04Speaker 30: Your love is in me.
- 58:08Speaker 2: Your pride is in me, your.
- 58:11Speaker 20: Love is in me, your light is in me. You
- 58:31Speaker 20: are the.
- 58:31Speaker 26: Only one who is close to me You are the
- 58:35Speaker 26: only one who is far from me Make me walk Make.
- 58:42Speaker 9: Me walk Make me walk.
- 59:00Speaker 26: Chalwaay jaana Chalwaay jaana Chalwaay jaana Hawa mein phool mein
- 59:18Speaker 26: mausam mein Kalyon ki mehk mein.
- 59:25Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 59:52Speaker 26: You are the only one in my life You are
- 59:56Speaker 26: the only one in my life
