- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey, I'm reading this story and I'm having a problem
- 0:02Speaker 1: understanding it. I feel like I understand half of it.
- 0:04Speaker 1: And I thought I could bounce it off you guys.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Okay.
- 0:06Speaker 1: It says folks online are talking about societal shifts in
- 0:11Speaker 1: their lifetimes that no one talks about anymore. They're older folks.
- 0:15Speaker 3: Okay.
- 0:16Speaker 1: So these are things that no one talks about anymore.
- 0:18Speaker 1: And I'm reading them and I'm like, I don't understand.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Like the prevalence of unmarried couples living together. This person says,
- 0:25Speaker 1: when I was a kid, This was considered scandalous. Now
- 0:28Speaker 1: it's just assumed that a couple move in together at
- 0:30Speaker 1: some point, whether or not they intend to get married.
- 0:33Speaker 3: I would argue that that is probably a healthy thing
- 0:36Speaker 3: to do. I had a friend that didn't live with
- 0:38Speaker 3: her husband until they got married and it did not
- 0:41Speaker 3: end up well because they didn't know each other's habits.
- 0:43Speaker 3: They didn't.
- 0:44Speaker 2: They actually ended up hating each other.
- 0:46Speaker 1: That is a good point to this subject. But what
- 0:49Speaker 1: is this article talking about?
- 0:50Speaker 2: I know, I'm trying to figure it out too. Beyond that,
- 0:53Speaker 2: I need another example. Okay, tattoos.
- 0:55Speaker 1: This person said, if my 70s self were transported to today,
- 0:59Speaker 1: I'd be amazed at so many motorcyclists and former sailors
- 1:01Speaker 1: were walking around these streets.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:03Speaker 1: What does that mean?
- 1:04Speaker 3: I think this article is like, What are these young
- 1:07Speaker 3: whippersnappers doing these days?
- 1:09Speaker 1: Are they saying that back.
- 1:10Speaker 4: In the day? Yeah.
- 1:11Speaker 2: I'll give you one that's a little more modern, I think.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Things that older people will hate on younger people.
- 1:17Speaker 4: Societal things that have changed now back in the day.
- 1:20Speaker 4: Like for me, if the doorbell rings or somebody knocks
- 1:23Speaker 4: at the door, I think it's common for most of
- 1:25Speaker 4: us to not answer it at all. But your parents
- 1:27Speaker 4: and our grandparents would never do that. They would always
- 1:29Speaker 4: go to the front door and be surprised by who's there.
- 1:32Speaker 4: But we don't because we don't want to get, you know, stabbed.
- 1:35Speaker 1: So it's the way the article is labeled. What's the
- 1:37Speaker 1: societal shift over your lifetime that no one talks about?
- 1:40Speaker 1: Another one is going to the gym. They say almost
- 1:42Speaker 1: everyone I know works out now. I go to a
- 1:44Speaker 1: community gym and it's mostly seniors, at least during the day.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Like, I don't understand.
- 1:49Speaker 3: It's just things that I guess were, like, super popular
- 1:52Speaker 3: and relevant back then. Then that might not be now.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Or opposite. Like here, this part.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Kids' sports are now an industry. In the 70s, no
- 2:01Speaker 1: one took lessons or went to summer camps.
- 2:02Speaker 2: That's true.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Now kids are basically groomed from a young age to
- 2:05Speaker 1: excel at a sport.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Yeah, that's true. It's pretty wild. You just sign up
- 2:09Speaker 2: and play something and you practice on your own time.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Less interaction. You can walk past someone and they don't
- 2:14Speaker 1: notice because they're locked on their devices and are always
- 2:16Speaker 1: in a rush. Yeah, that's true. That's one thing when
- 2:20Speaker 1: I go hiking. People always say hi when you pass
- 2:22Speaker 1: each other out.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Sure.
- 2:23Speaker 1: And if they don't say hi, this friend of mine,
- 2:24Speaker 1: I go hiking with.
- 2:24Speaker 2: You, yell at him. Hello. Good morning.
- 2:30Speaker 1: We don't talk on the phone. We text, DM, Zoom, FaceTime, email, Snapchat,
- 2:33Speaker 1: but we don't just call to talk, which used to
- 2:36Speaker 1: be something a lot of people did routinely.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Well, sure. And they had home phones. Nobody has a
- 2:39Speaker 2: home phone.
- 2:39Speaker 1: I tell you, my wife, she can talk on the
- 2:42Speaker 1: phone all freaking day. There's very little smoking in public places.
- 2:46Speaker 1: I love that.
- 2:47Speaker 2: That's amazing.
- 2:48Speaker 3: See, I get that. But then again, like sometimes like
- 2:50Speaker 3: you've had a few with your friends, you want to
- 2:52Speaker 3: just like spark up a ciggy.
- 2:53Speaker 2: I get it.
- 2:54Speaker 3: And it's really annoying when they.
- 2:55Speaker 2: Tell you no. Yeah.
- 2:57Speaker 4: It's like terrible if you walk outside to go get
- 2:59Speaker 4: some air out of a bar and everybody's like huddled
- 3:01Speaker 4: around smoking in the parking lot.
- 3:02Speaker 3: Teach their own. That's my kind of party.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Public profanity is much more common.
- 3:07Speaker 2: That's true.
- 3:08Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Knowing your neighbors, we used to know them well and
- 3:10Speaker 1: take care of their kids when they came over to
- 3:11Speaker 1: play with your kids. If you needed to borrow a tool,
- 3:14Speaker 1: have at it. Needed a hand doing something, happy to help.
- 3:17Speaker 1: I say hello to my neighbors now and they look
- 3:19Speaker 1: at me like I just asked them to hand over
- 3:20Speaker 1: their wallet.
- 3:21Speaker 3: That's true.
- 3:21Speaker 2: I get that. I don't talk to my neighbors.
- 3:23Speaker 3: Yeah, I feel like my MMA is almost too hands-on
- 3:25Speaker 3: with our neighbors because right now we're taking care of
- 3:28Speaker 3: every house on each side of us. And I'm like,
- 3:30Speaker 3: why are you signing up for this? Well, I love
- 3:33Speaker 3: my neighbors.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Oh, snowbirds? My kids would never go over to my
- 3:36Speaker 2: neighbor's house.
- 3:36Speaker 3: I'm like, it's so annoying. Yeah, and they got us
- 3:39Speaker 3: all on the cameras watering the plants.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Men are much more involved in their kids' lives and
- 3:44Speaker 1: more comfortable talking about their feelings and trauma.
- 3:47Speaker 2: That's a good one. That's true. That didn't happen. You
- 3:49Speaker 2: shouldn't change diapers. That didn't happen back in the day.
- 3:51Speaker 2: It's just evolution.
- 3:52Speaker 3: Right, men weren't allowed to have emotions or feelings then.
- 3:55Speaker 2: You're right.
- 3:56Speaker 1: It was uncool.
- 3:58Speaker 2: Sign of weakness.
