Transcript
- 0:10Speaker 1: Hello, everyone, and welcome into another episode of the Checo Daily.
- 0:13Speaker 1: It's Andrew DiCecco, Eagles beat reporter for InsideTheBirds.com. And we
- 0:17Speaker 1: just wrapped day 17 of Eagles training camp, which is
- 0:20Speaker 1: a bit of a bummer because it was the final
- 0:23Speaker 1: day of Eagles training camp. And so the season is
- 0:26Speaker 1: upon us, which is always exciting and fun. I look
- 0:28Speaker 1: forward to chronicling that. But training camp is my favorite
- 0:32Speaker 1: part of the season. Along with the storytelling of the
- 0:37Speaker 1: regular season, of course, but it really marks the start
- 0:41Speaker 1: of the season. That's where you can kind of see
- 0:43Speaker 1: things come together. You learn a lot about where certain
- 0:46Speaker 1: players are, and there's naturally going to be some stories
- 0:50Speaker 1: that come from that. But it was a great camp.
- 0:53Speaker 1: It was fun. And I just want to get this
- 0:55Speaker 1: out of the way before we get into the practice observations.
- 0:57Speaker 1: I greatly appreciate those who listen to this podcast daily.
- 1:02Speaker 1: I greatly appreciate those who follow along with my practice
- 1:06Speaker 1: observations on InsideTheBirds.com.
- 1:08Speaker 2: Your support means a lot.
- 1:10Speaker 1: And I look forward to delivering you the best Eagles
- 1:14Speaker 1: coverage that I can. And I'm very much looking forward
- 1:17Speaker 1: to doing that for you all for another season. Let's
- 1:22Speaker 1: get to the practice updates. The Eagles opened with 7-on-7s today,
- 1:29Speaker 1: and the safeties were Drew McCuba and Marcus Epps. The
- 1:33Speaker 1: secondary was Quinion Mitchell, Cooper DeGene, and Reek Woolen. Reek
- 1:38Speaker 1: Woolen broke up a pass on a slant to Devontae Smith.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Then Jalen Hurts overshoots Dallas Goddard in the end zone.
- 1:46Speaker 1: Jalen Hurts then goes to Devontae Smith for a touchdown.
- 1:50Speaker 1: And on that play, and I'm just going through my
- 1:53Speaker 1: notes here, I found it relevant.
- 1:55Speaker 2: E.J. Jenkins and Will Shipley came in the lineup for that.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Reek Wallen smothered Darius Cooper in the back of the
- 2:04Speaker 1: end zone. It was in the right corner there to
- 2:06Speaker 1: force an incompletion. Then Tanner McKee was first up with
- 2:10Speaker 1: the second unit. The receivers were Makai Lemon, Quez Watkins,
- 2:16Speaker 1: and Danny Gray. Makai Lemon catches a short pass with
- 2:21Speaker 1: Smile Mondan in coverage. Then Tanner McKee, he hit the
- 2:25Speaker 1: fly swatter. He was targeting tight end Stone Smart, but
- 2:28Speaker 1: was unable to get it to him. And then Tanner
- 2:30Speaker 1: McKee hit Tank Bigsby for a touchdown. Moving forward to 11-on-11s,
- 2:40Speaker 1: the safeties were Cooper DeGene and Drew Makuba.
- 2:43Speaker 2: They were in base to start.
- 2:44Speaker 1: The linebackers, Jahad Campbell and Zach Baughn, Saquon Barkley got
- 2:51Speaker 1: a carry to start this session right off to the
- 2:53Speaker 1: right side, but J.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Lux Hunt got a hand in there.
- 2:56Speaker 1: If it were a tackling situation, he might tackle Saquon
- 2:59Speaker 1: for either a loss on the play or no gain
- 3:03Speaker 1: at all.
- 3:03Speaker 2: Again, another example of J.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Lux Hunt just flashing and being so instinctive and reactive
- 3:09Speaker 1: and having a read on what the offense is looking
- 3:13Speaker 1: to do. He just has smart player. And again, I
- 3:16Speaker 1: can't emphasize this enough. It seems like everything's really starting
- 3:19Speaker 1: to come together for him. The athletic part was always there,
- 3:22Speaker 1: but the mental part of his game is something that
- 3:25Speaker 1: I don't think can be overstated because he's really shown
- 3:28Speaker 1: a lot of signs of growth and development there.
- 3:31Speaker 2: And then it looked like.
- 3:36Speaker 1: McKay Lemon was a little late coming in on the
- 3:38Speaker 1: second play and, But Devontae Smith catches a pass with
- 3:43Speaker 1: Marcus Epson coverage. Will Shipley comes in at running back
- 3:47Speaker 1: on the play there early. And Michael Carter, he ended
- 3:54Speaker 1: up coming in along with Drew Makuba on that play
- 3:58Speaker 1: when he came in. Jalen Hurts hits Hollywood Brown along
- 4:01Speaker 1: the sideline with Reek Wohan defending. The second team offensive
- 4:05Speaker 1: line at left tackle, John Ujukwu. left guard drew Kendall center,
- 4:10Speaker 1: Jake majors, right guard, Willie Lampkin and right tackle Fred Johnson.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Andy Dalton is first up there and he zips one
- 4:20Speaker 1: in to Elijah Moore with Ambry Thomas covering. It looked
- 4:25Speaker 1: like Ambry Thomas was pushing from behind. He got a
- 4:30Speaker 1: little bit, uh, it looked like he got, maybe got
- 4:32Speaker 1: there a little early, but it was an incompletion. Um,
- 4:37Speaker 1: Then Andy Dalton, in a surprise move, shows that he
- 4:41Speaker 1: is a little bit spry, though that's not his game,
- 4:43Speaker 1: to be clear. He keeps it up the middle, and
- 4:47Speaker 1: on that particular play, Micah Morris, the Eagles rookie, comes
- 4:51Speaker 1: in at left guard. Now, I just want to highlight
- 4:54Speaker 1: something here, because Landon Dickerson was available for this practice,
- 4:59Speaker 1: and he started, and he got a lot of the reps,
- 5:02Speaker 1: but Drew Kendall also worked in at left guard with
- 5:04Speaker 1: the first team. And I think that's something to not
- 5:09Speaker 1: necessarily keep an eye on, but be mindful of. File
- 5:11Speaker 1: that away that the Eagles have gotten Drew Kendall quite
- 5:14Speaker 1: a bit of work at left guard. So if there
- 5:17Speaker 1: were a situation to arise in a game situation, you're
- 5:20Speaker 1: not going to have to do.
- 5:22Speaker 2: A lot of toggling there. It's something that you have
- 5:24Speaker 2: a player who's ready to step in and go.
- 5:27Speaker 1: So a lot of cross training this summer with offensive
- 5:30Speaker 1: line coach Chris Cooper, which he kind of intimated when
- 5:33Speaker 1: we spoke to him in the spring. And you see
- 5:35Speaker 1: that whether it's Willie Lampkin, Drew Kendall, Jake Majors. John Ujuku,
- 5:41Speaker 1: who has bounced around from both tackle spots and guard.
- 5:45Speaker 1: So there's a lot of mixing and matching there, and
- 5:47Speaker 1: it's all to prepare these players to be able to
- 5:51Speaker 1: step in at a moment's notice. And I think that
- 5:53Speaker 1: that is going to be hugely critical, especially when you're
- 5:56Speaker 1: trying to do things on the fly in a game situation.
- 6:00Speaker 1: I should pause here because I got a little bit
- 6:02Speaker 1: ahead of myself. I want to give you guys the
- 6:04Speaker 1: practice report for Day 17. Not practicing. Markel Bell, thumb leg.
- 6:09Speaker 1: Ja'Corian Bennett, knee. Grant Calcaterra, back. Tight on Eli Stowers.
- 6:13Speaker 2: Hamstring. Safety Cole Wisneski. Concussion. Limited Jonathan Jones. Shoulder.
- 6:20Speaker 1: A pretty light practice report for the final day of
- 6:22Speaker 1: training camp, which I think really speaks to Nick Sirianni
- 6:26Speaker 1: and the way that he structures training camp. He just
- 6:28Speaker 1: has a really good feel and a good read on
- 6:32Speaker 1: his team.
- 6:32Speaker 2: He knows what works.
- 6:34Speaker 1: It's something that I think he's always drawing from past experiences,
- 6:37Speaker 1: and it's not really a surprise. It's always difficult, to
- 6:40Speaker 1: be clear, to be able to have a relatively clean
- 6:45Speaker 1: injury report.
- 6:46Speaker 2: But I think at this stage of.
- 6:48Speaker 1: The game, where... the Eagles have had a lot of
- 6:52Speaker 1: active practices. The first and second team have gotten quite
- 6:54Speaker 1: a bit of work. That is a, a pretty good, um,
- 6:58Speaker 1: a pretty good mark there to not have an extensive
- 7:02Speaker 1: practice report. So as we left off with Andy Dalton there,
- 7:07Speaker 1: I want to, I want to highlight just the, the
- 7:13Speaker 1: overall athleticism, a punter Braden man. And, you know, you
- 7:17Speaker 1: think of that with a punter, um, You don't necessarily
- 7:20Speaker 1: correlate that with being athletic or having a strong arm,
- 7:24Speaker 1: but Braden Mann and one rep, he delivered a tight spiral,
- 7:29Speaker 1: showed some arm strength there. He launched the pass. They
- 7:32Speaker 1: were simulating a kickoff, and he throws it to the
- 7:35Speaker 1: end zone, and it is fielded by Will Shipley. And
- 7:39Speaker 1: I think that that was just a fun moment of practice.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Then he was punting them from there on out. But
- 7:44Speaker 1: also the punt returners, Makai Lemon, Britton Covey, Cooper DeGene,
- 7:48Speaker 1: and Quez Watkins.
- 7:49Speaker 2: No Elijah Moore with that group.
- 7:51Speaker 1: I took a look over and he was kneeling with
- 7:55Speaker 1: the other wide receivers who were kind of observing that drill.
- 7:58Speaker 2: Something to, maybe something to monitor.
- 8:02Speaker 1: Because I always thought that if he were to make
- 8:05Speaker 1: the roster, Elijah Moore, and I'm not quite there yet.
- 8:08Speaker 1: you would think that special teams would really factor in,
- 8:11Speaker 1: and he has gotten work as a punt returner this summer.
- 8:14Speaker 1: So it's something that he has done, hasn't had a
- 8:16Speaker 1: lot of experience in a game situation, but I was
- 8:19Speaker 1: keeping an eye out to see if he was going
- 8:21Speaker 1: to be in that group, and for whatever reason, today
- 8:23Speaker 1: he was not. The Eagles got back to it with
- 8:26Speaker 1: 11 on 11s, and Jalen Hurts tried a deep shot
- 8:29Speaker 1: to Devontae Smith. Really good coverage there from Cooper Dejean
- 8:33Speaker 1: down the left sideline there.
- 8:34Speaker 2: The left corner. Jalen Hurts hits Makai Lemon over the middle.
- 8:40Speaker 2: Short game there.
- 8:41Speaker 1: He keeps it himself on the next play around the
- 8:44Speaker 1: left side for a touchdown. The second team offensive line
- 8:48Speaker 1: remained unchanged when they rolled it back out. But Damian Pierce,
- 8:52Speaker 1: who has been injured quite a bit this summer, he
- 8:54Speaker 1: had the hamstring that kept him out when it looked
- 8:57Speaker 1: like he was sort of gaining some traction.
- 8:59Speaker 2: He got some work.
- 9:00Speaker 1: He had a nice run up the middle, showed some
- 9:02Speaker 1: good burst. And that was really sprung by Willie Lampkin.
- 9:05Speaker 1: I really focused in on the interior there. And Willie
- 9:08Speaker 1: Lampkin got out and really showcased his athleticism and power
- 9:13Speaker 1: on that.
- 9:15Speaker 2: The linebackers, Jeremiah Trotter Jr.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Is working with the second team, but you also saw
- 9:20Speaker 1: Chance Campbell and Smile Mondin working in there.
- 9:25Speaker 3: I'm someone who really likes to wear jeans, but it's
- 9:27Speaker 3: becoming really, really hard these days to find jeans that
- 9:31Speaker 3: aren't tight-fitting or restricting, especially for someone who's active. I
- 9:35Speaker 3: like to go to the gym. I'm always out and about.
- 9:38Speaker 3: Even when I'm not active and I'm just sitting in
- 9:40Speaker 3: a chair, you start to get that feeling of being
- 9:43Speaker 3: constricted and restrained, and I hate that feeling. Perfect example.
- 9:46Speaker 3: Last year, I did a fantasy football draft. It took
- 9:49Speaker 3: three hours, and I could just feel myself moving around
- 9:53Speaker 3: my chair, adjusting myself, but everything changed when I found
- 9:57Speaker 3: the perfect gene. It's a me just right. It doesn't pinch.
- 10:03Speaker 3: It stretches nicely. Here's what makes these genuinely different from
- 10:07Speaker 3: other stretch jeans.
- 10:08Speaker 2: All right.
- 10:08Speaker 3: They don't look like stretch jeans. They look like sharp,
- 10:11Speaker 3: classic denim. They're so polished that you can go straight
- 10:14Speaker 3: from like a tailgate parking lot Right to a dinner
- 10:17Speaker 3: reservation without anybody clocking you as that guy who just
- 10:21Speaker 3: spent four hours in a lot. I just recently did
- 10:24Speaker 3: another fantasy football draft and I wore the perfect jean
- 10:27Speaker 3: and I was just so comfortable. Look, these things are
- 10:30Speaker 3: flexible enough that you can actually move around in them.
- 10:33Speaker 3: You can bend to get that drink in the cooler.
- 10:35Speaker 3: You can sit in a chair for a few hours.
- 10:39Speaker 3: You can stand for the anthem at a ball game.
- 10:41Speaker 3: You can get up and guard somebody in a pickup
- 10:43Speaker 3: game wearing the perfect jean without even hearing a seam
- 10:47Speaker 3: threatened to give out.
- 10:48Speaker 2: All right.

- 11:09Speaker 3: football season is coming up soon. And I know that's
- 11:11Speaker 3: going to be so many late nights for me. You
- 11:14Speaker 3: know how many times the Eagles are on prime time
- 11:16Speaker 3: and I'm not going to be going to bed until
- 11:17Speaker 3: after well after midnight. And that means the next day
- 11:20Speaker 3: I can probably count the number of cups of coffee.
- 11:23Speaker 3: I would drink on two hands. But not anymore. That's
- 11:27Speaker 3: because for a while now, I've been using Ultra Pouches.
- 11:30Speaker 3: It is instant focus in a pouch. These pouches are
- 11:34Speaker 3: completely nicotine-free and caffeine-free. And boy, do I get a
- 11:39Speaker 3: great jolt from these truly clean pouches. Plant-powered pouches that
- 11:42Speaker 3: are designed to sharpen your mind and lift your energy
- 11:46Speaker 3: all without caffeine, nicotine, or crash. I'm also seeing these everywhere.
- 11:51Speaker 3: They're blowing up, so I know I'm not the only one.
- 11:53Speaker 3: Did you know it was possible to feel this energized
- 11:56Speaker 3: and focused without nicotine or caffeine? I certainly didn't. Also,
- 12:00Speaker 3: I'm less edgy and less anxious compared to people who
- 12:04Speaker 3: use nicotine or even when I drink a lot of coffee.
- 12:08Speaker 3: I will totally be using them when I'm burning the
- 12:10Speaker 3: candle at both ends, trying to record, write, produce podcasts.
- 12:15Speaker 2: I will absolutely need them.
- 12:17Speaker 3: Ultra is the ultimate guilt-free pouch delivering instant focus and

- 12:38Speaker 3: our show and tell them Inside the Bird sent you.
- 12:42Speaker 1: Gushiken and Maximus Pulley got work there at safety. They
- 12:47Speaker 1: haven't gotten a lot of work there. They didn't get
- 12:49Speaker 1: much in the joint practices and training. really in the
- 12:54Speaker 1: open practice at Lincoln Financial Field. They didn't get a
- 12:56Speaker 1: ton of work there either. So this is going to
- 12:58Speaker 1: be a big game for them. They're going to see
- 13:00Speaker 1: a lot of reps, but I thought Gushikin did some
- 13:02Speaker 1: nice things in today's practice.
- 13:04Speaker 2: Tanner McKee comes in.
- 13:05Speaker 1: He hits Cameron Latu on a slant with Gushikin in coverage,
- 13:09Speaker 1: but he drops the pass. Looked like Latu created some space.
- 13:13Speaker 1: Gushikin was a little bit behind him, but he was
- 13:16Speaker 1: closing and Cam dropped the pass. You don't want that
- 13:19Speaker 1: to happen. Pulley thuds Stone Smart after a short grab.
- 13:25Speaker 1: Pulley plays with good toughness and tenacity. I like watching
- 13:28Speaker 1: him play. I haven't seen a ton of him in
- 13:31Speaker 1: practice of late, as I outlined, but he does play
- 13:35Speaker 1: with some urgency. I thought in the first preseason game
- 13:38Speaker 1: he showcased his special teams ability, and I look forward
- 13:41Speaker 1: to seeing him and Gushikin in an expanded role in
- 13:44Speaker 1: the final preseason game. Tanner McKee hits Eric Ezukamma. For
- 13:49Speaker 1: a touchdown, and I mentioned this before, for those wondering,
- 13:52Speaker 1: and for at least this week it matters, among the
- 13:56Speaker 1: bottom of the roster wide receivers, I thought that Quez
- 14:00Speaker 1: Watkins earlier in camp was a player that probably separated
- 14:05Speaker 1: himself from that, from that tier.
- 14:07Speaker 2: But I think through the.
- 14:09Speaker 1: Full body of work, Eric Azucanma was someone who I
- 14:12Speaker 1: thought made the most of his limited snaps that he
- 14:14Speaker 1: got in training camp. And you could see the speed
- 14:17Speaker 1: and he does offer some kick return upside. So maybe
- 14:19Speaker 1: a practice squat spot could be in the cards for him.
- 14:22Speaker 1: We'll have to wait and see on that. Tanner McKee
- 14:24Speaker 1: nearly connects with Brandon Hayes. Um, and he, uh, Isaiah
- 14:32Speaker 1: Bolden was defending there. And then we have the secondary there.
- 14:39Speaker 1: The outside corners were Ambry Thomas and Isaiah Bolden. And
- 14:42Speaker 1: Sean Wade, the veteran, was manning the nickel spot. Sean
- 14:45Speaker 1: Wade forcing a couple fumbles in the preseason. All three
- 14:48Speaker 1: of the players that I just mentioned are really long
- 14:52Speaker 1: shots to make the roster. But they are potentially vying
- 14:55Speaker 1: for spots on the practice squad. Sean Wade was flagged
- 14:58Speaker 1: on a McKee pass in the end zone to Brandon Hayes.
- 15:02Speaker 1: Brandon Hayes has been on and off the roster. For
- 15:04Speaker 1: those wondering, he initially participated in Eagles rookie minicamp on
- 15:07Speaker 1: a tryout basis, and he's been called upon when they
- 15:11Speaker 1: needed to sign a receiver. Whenever they were light on numbers,
- 15:14Speaker 1: he hasn't gotten many reps at all this summer. There
- 15:18Speaker 1: was a second and five scenario later on in practice,
- 15:21Speaker 1: and after Saquon Barkley had a nice catch and run,
- 15:26Speaker 1: Jalen Hurts throws behind Hollywood Brown with quinion mitchell in
- 15:32Speaker 1: coverage and then jalen hurts through wide of johnny munt
- 15:35Speaker 1: with quinion mitchell and nolan smith in the.
- 15:39Speaker 2: Vicinity there.
- 15:41Speaker 1: I paid attention to andy dalton's series that he got
- 15:44Speaker 1: and he had a deep shot to darius cooper it
- 15:47Speaker 1: was deflected cooper dropped it that was a second drop
- 15:51Speaker 1: in as many practices you normally sure-handed has really strong
- 15:54Speaker 1: hands but Michael Carter was there for the interception. Michael
- 15:58Speaker 1: Carter has had three interceptions this training camp. And Darius Cooper,
- 16:02Speaker 1: on his drop in the open practice at Lincoln Financial Field,
- 16:07Speaker 1: Quinion Mitchell made a diving attempt and nearly was able
- 16:09Speaker 1: to come up with an interception there. You'd like to
- 16:12Speaker 1: see him be able to come up with some of
- 16:13Speaker 1: those and not potentially put the offense in a bad.
- 16:17Speaker 2: Spot in the open practice. But it did cost him.
- 16:22Speaker 1: In today's practice where Michael Carter capped what I believe
- 16:26Speaker 1: has been a pretty impressive summer with an interception there.
- 16:31Speaker 2: He rips one.
- 16:32Speaker 1: Andy Dalton rips one in the middle to Stone Smart.
- 16:35Speaker 1: I thought that was his best throw of the day.
- 16:37Speaker 1: It hit him right in stride. Michael Carter had tight coverage,
- 16:40Speaker 1: but it was right where Stone Smart could grab it.
- 16:43Speaker 1: Then he threw short right to Britton Covey. Kapina Gushikin
- 16:47Speaker 1: was there to tag him. Then he hits Quez Watkins
- 16:51Speaker 1: in the back of the end zone for a touch.
- 16:53Speaker 1: I couldn't tell from my vantage point. I was standing
- 16:56Speaker 1: on the bleachers there up the top, and I couldn't
- 16:59Speaker 1: tell if Quez was out of the back of the
- 17:00Speaker 1: end zone or not. But he found Quez in the back.
- 17:03Speaker 1: Gushikin was in coverage there, sort of trailing on the play.
- 17:06Speaker 1: Andy Dalton then goes to Danny Gray on sort of
- 17:09Speaker 1: a corner route there. Ambry Thomas is flagged. Good pass
- 17:12Speaker 1: rush there from Keyshawn James Newby.
- 17:15Speaker 2: And another.
- 17:19Speaker 1: A fun note at the end of practice when they
- 17:21Speaker 1: were going through a catch circuit, Howie Roseman, Eagles general manager,
- 17:24Speaker 1: was firing off passes to defensive players as they were
- 17:27Speaker 1: sort of in this assembly line going through this gauntlet
- 17:31Speaker 1: and catching passes. So Howie's got a little bit of
- 17:34Speaker 1: an arm on him. You know, I think he deserves
- 17:36Speaker 1: a little bit of credit there. I thought there were
- 17:39Speaker 1: some tight throws. But, yeah, I mean, this was just
- 17:42Speaker 1: a really fun training camp to chronicle. We have to
- 17:46Speaker 1: submit our 53-man rosters, those of us who cover the team.
- 17:50Speaker 2: And this is.
- 17:52Speaker 1: One of the more challenging roster predictions, at least in
- 17:54Speaker 1: my view, over the last three, four years.
- 17:58Speaker 2: I think I finished third or fourth last year.
- 18:01Speaker 1: It's been a while since I won in 2023, but
- 18:05Speaker 1: this is a tough one, and I'm going to spend
- 18:07Speaker 1: way too much time pondering these final.
- 18:11Speaker 2: Spots, 50, 51, 52, 53.
- 18:12Speaker 1: Do they keep a long snap or do they not?
- 18:16Speaker 1: How many linebackers do they need? What are they going
- 18:18Speaker 1: to do with who are Bernard and Joshua Wieru? What
- 18:21Speaker 1: are they going to do at corner where the picture
- 18:25Speaker 1: is still a little cloudy, Jonathan Jones? being out for
- 18:28Speaker 1: a lot of the summer certainly added another layer of
