- 0:00SPEAKER_00: It's important to know that in Hebrew and Aramaic, Sane, which means to hate,
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: has various forms.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: There's the strong form and there's the weak form.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: And it's the same word.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: And so we have to know by context which form is being used.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: And if it's the strong form, it means what we would mean by hate, which is,
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: you know, reject, push away, utterly cut yourself off from, etc., etc.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: But if it's the weak form, it means set against.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: Sent or set in second place, set next to.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: That's the weak form of the word hate.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: And that obviously is what Jesus is talking about because he's not contradicting
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: the Ten Commandments which say to honor your father and your mother.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: And he's not contradicting what we hear in the first reading.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: He's not contradicting what he says throughout the whole gospel
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: that there is no higher law than the law of love.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: He's saying something else.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: He's saying that we have to set first things first in order
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: to have second things find their place.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: Another way of saying that might be in order to see anything properly,
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: we have to see through it and not see the thing itself.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: That might seem like a strange concept,
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: but we have all experienced that and we've seen people who do the opposite of that,
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: which is to take something that should be second and make it into first place.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: Anyone that has an idol in their lives, anyone who's a workaholic,
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: anyone who makes an idol out of money or success or power or prestige or any
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: of those things, they're taking good things.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: Gifts which the Lord has given us and setting them in first place,
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: making them the gods of their lives.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: And that is truly a miserable life.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: Something like success is good.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: God blesses people with success.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: God wants his church to succeed in many ways.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: But to make success an idol is to take that which is good and make it into the only good.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: And to subject every other good to that.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: And that ultimately is to lose not only everything else,
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: but also to lose the thing itself.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: Because success made it to a God is not even success.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: You can see that with Relationships,
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: anyone that takes a relationship in their life and makes it into the be all
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: and end all ends up in trouble.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: The young man who makes a woman into his God says, here's someone who's going to fulfill me.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: Here's someone who's going to provide everything I've been looking for.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: He will be sorely disappointed.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: The only way relationships work is when first things are first and we have God first
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: and then we can love the person Or the thing or whatever it is through God,
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: love God through them.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: Have everything in order to see through in that sense, this reality,
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: these things that are going on around us, these relationships.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: It's true for nature as well.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: I think the whole world, when we see through it,
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: when we see the glory of God and its beauty shining through the world.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: Then we can truly appreciate it and see it for what it is.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: But when we try to make it into a God, it ends up losing not only its own mystery,
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: but causing everything else to be lost as well.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: How can we do this?
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: Well, Christ in the gospel is talking about the need to carry our cross.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: What does it mean to carry our cross?
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: It means to live life With an attitude of giving instead
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: of constantly looking to get, right?
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: The attitude of getting, going throughout trying to get,
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: that's what causes us to make idols out of things, you know,
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: out of this relationship.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: Oh, I wanna get everything that I can out of this relationship. It's so nice.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: It feels so good.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: But if I come into that relationship willing to give, I want to give myself.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: I want to offer myself.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: I want to make myself, my life into a gift.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: That's what the cross means.
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: That's what Christ's secret was to make his life
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: into an outpouring gift for others.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: If we do that, then we will truly receive all these other good things.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: Seek first the kingdom of God and all these other things will be given to you besides.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: If we go out looking to give of ourselves, we will receive.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: And if we go out looking to get,
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: we will not even receive and we'll lose everything else besides.
