- 0:00Welcome to Loud and Lifted. I'm your host, Betsy
- 0:02Hamm. And today's quick lift is a bite -sized
- 0:04burst of bold you didn't know you needed in under
- 0:0610 minutes. This week, we're highlighting moments
- 0:09from our conversation with Jamie Mowery, a marketing
- 0:11executive and founder of She Said Golf, who empowers
- 0:14women to find their voice, own their message,
- 0:17stop playing small, and to have some fun. This
- 0:20one's for the women who feel stuck, silenced,
- 0:23or stretched thin. You don't need more hustle.
- 0:25You need a mindset shift. maybe a golf club,
- 0:28and some friends. Jamie's episode was about way
- 0:32more than golf. It was about community, connection,
- 0:35and the importance of having fun. Let's tee off
- 0:38to our key takeaways and action items. Up first,
- 0:50confidence is built sometimes slowly. If you've
- 0:53listened to previous episodes, you know confidence
- 0:55seems to be a reoccurring theme and that's for
- 0:57good reason. Confidence is so important and it's
- 1:00something that many women tend to struggle with.
- 1:02However, it's something we can actually continue
- 1:04to work on. And Jamie's point was is that confidence
- 1:08is built through practice and through reps and
- 1:10sometimes it is slow. I think generally I'm a
- 1:13fairly confident person, but you put me on a
- 1:16golf course, I am not confident. I don't want
- 1:19other people to see me golfing. I want to be
- 1:21far away from everybody. I get super nervous.
- 1:24I stress out about it. I feel awful when I shank
- 1:27the ball and it's crazy. But the reason why I
- 1:31don't have confidence on the course. not just
- 1:33because I suck, it's because I don't put in the
- 1:35practice and the effort. I'm trying, this is
- 1:37my year where I'm going to put a little bit more
- 1:40effort into that practice and going to the driving
- 1:42range and taking lessons. But that same mentality
- 1:46and thought process is relevant to our professional
- 1:49careers. We've talked before about sometimes
- 1:51it's hard to speak up or to be comfortable to
- 1:54raise your hand or volunteer for something. But
- 1:56slowly, if you take baby steps, it becomes easier
- 1:59and you'll start to build that confidence. There
- 2:02is a great quote from Kobe Bryant and it says,
- 2:05confidence comes from preparation. And that's
- 2:07so true. And think about the amazing career he
- 2:10had. He had to prep. He had to build his confidence
- 2:13slowly over time. So takeaway here, nobody crushes
- 2:17it on the first try. Whether you're pitching
- 2:19a bold idea or learning how to hit a golf ball,
- 2:22confidence is earned by doing the thing again
- 2:24and again. Also, confidence follows action. So
- 2:28action item for this one, show up for the reps,
- 2:31swap, I'm not good at this for I'm still learning
- 2:34or I'm still practicing or I'm still growing.
- 2:37Don't have the negative self -talk and remember
- 2:39that progress over perfection every single time.
- 2:42Takeaway number two, forget the boys club, build
- 2:45your own. First of all, I think we need to stop
- 2:48using the word club. Club is exclusive, right?
- 2:51And as women, we want to be inclusive. So we've
- 2:54discussed the fact that the boys club still exists.
- 2:56Always will exist great good for them and it
- 2:59can feel very exclusive So we need to continue
- 3:02to focus on building a community not a club.
- 3:05We don't need a girls club. We need a well women's
- 3:08community. Jamie talked about on the golf course
- 3:10how it was very exclusive and there really weren't
- 3:13a lot of women around and that's literally still
- 3:16true today anytime you pick pretty much any golf
- 3:18course but who cares it doesn't matter. So they
- 3:21started to focus on the positive of building
- 3:23their own community and their own circles and
- 3:25that's the takeaway here and that again isn't
- 3:28just on the golf course this is anywhere in life
- 3:31because by the way if you haven't looked around
- 3:33there's not many times where women aren't in
- 3:35the minority whether it's in settings that are
- 3:38sports like. You know, you go to the gym, you're
- 3:40probably one of the few women or minority. I
- 3:43did realize this morning that the one place that
- 3:45I feel like women are not in the minority is
- 3:47a yoga class. So if you need to be in that group
- 3:51where there is a lot more females than there
- 3:53are men. take a yoga class, definitely recommend
- 3:56that. But again, the same thing from a social
- 3:58situation can be applied professionally as you
- 4:01continue to grow in your role. And as you take
- 4:03on more of a leadership position, a lot of times
- 4:05you're going to find yourself to be one of the
- 4:07fewer women in the room. And that's okay. It
- 4:09doesn't matter. That's when you continue to make
- 4:11those connections and build those circles to
- 4:14forget about the boys club and just continue
- 4:15to focus on building your own community. Part
- 4:18of the reason why people are obsessed with She
- 4:21Said Golf is the community feel of it. And it's
- 4:25the way it makes them feel when they are a part
- 4:27of these events. Golf, I feel like is maybe second
- 4:29or third on the list. Yes, that's the reason
- 4:31why these groups started to form and why this
- 4:33community was built. But it's the way that women
- 4:35feel when they are at a She Said Golf event.
- 4:37They feel supported. It's inclusive. Oh, it's
- 4:40also fun. There's cheerleaders cheering for you
- 4:43and you feel that sense of belonging. So yes,
- 4:45the boys club still exists, but let's continue
- 4:47to focus on building our community. Action item
- 4:51for the week, invite someone in, whether it's
- 4:53a meeting, a golf round, or a happy hour. Start
- 4:56making a community where women feel like they
- 4:58belong. Number three, probably my favorite, is
- 5:01have some damn fun. Many of us are in a constant
- 5:04state of getting shit done or trying to improve
- 5:07and it's Overwhelming and it's exhausting. We're
- 5:10so worried about our families our friends our
- 5:13jobs But the reality is we have to put ourselves
- 5:16first and at the top of the list It's true and
- 5:19that counts for the relaxing and the unwinding
- 5:21but also to have some freaking fun I think I'm
- 5:24pretty good at this one. I have to give myself
- 5:26credit. I'm very intentional about scheduling
- 5:29fun I'm always looking ahead to the next weekend
- 5:32or the next time and it can be little things
- 5:34like scheduling drinks or dinner with your girlfriends
- 5:37sometimes it's bigger I have my high school girlfriends
- 5:40that we go away at least once a year on a girls
- 5:42weekend trip which I love so much and of course
- 5:45fun doesn't mean just with your friends but a
- 5:47lot of times that's definitely a break but also
- 5:49planning things intentionally with your partner
- 5:51or your spouse and even your kids for me it's
- 5:54planning trips or getaways and whether it's just
- 5:56for the day to go somewhere maybe it's to a baseball
- 5:59game but of course then there's always the nice
- 6:01long anticipated vacations so I like to have
- 6:05things on the calendar that I look forward to
- 6:07and I definitely love to have fun always have
- 6:10been in the mindset of work hard but also play
- 6:12hard and fun isn't just fluff it's fuel it reduces
- 6:17stress it boosts creativity it makes life way
- 6:20more enjoyable and joy by the way is also a leadership
- 6:23trait to action item Join the walking group,
- 6:26take the yoga class, say yes to happy hour, hit
- 6:28the golf course, plan a trip, schedule fun on
- 6:31purpose. You have to be intentional. Treat it
- 6:33like it matters because it does confidence that
- 6:36comes from reps community. That's our secret
- 6:38weapon and fun. That's the fuel, not the reward.
- 6:42So show up messy, take up space, build your life
- 6:45with boldness and belly laughs. You're not behind.
- 6:47You're just getting warmed up because the only
- 6:49thing standing between where you are and where
- 6:51you want to be is just to get started. If you
- 6:54haven't listened to Jamie's episode, please do
