Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: To Iran and the United States and Israel. Are we
- 0:03Speaker 1: close to a peace deal or not? The President of
- 0:06Speaker 1: America says a US Iran agreement could be signed today,
- 0:09Speaker 1: and mediators have also said a deal is within reach,
- 0:12Speaker 1: but Tehran's warning that there are fresh Israeli strikes on
- 0:15Speaker 1: Lebanon and that could derail the whole thing. Trump says
- 0:18Speaker 1: the attack on bay Routes shouldn't have happened. He said,
- 0:21Speaker 1: don't blow it. Piece is so close. So we're joined
- 0:25Speaker 1: now by Simon Marx, and Simon is the president and
- 0:27Speaker 1: chief correspondent of Feature Story News. Morning to you, Simon,
- 0:32Speaker 1: Hello Simon.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Good morning to you. Andrew.
- 0:34Speaker 1: So, I think this is the fortieth time that the
- 0:36Speaker 1: President of the United States has promised a bit of peace.
- 0:38Speaker 1: How close to me this time?
- 0:41Speaker 2: Well, I mean, there's no question that we're closer than
- 0:43Speaker 2: ever before. I mean, we know that an enormous amount
- 0:46Speaker 2: of work has been done by Pakistani and Cuttery mediators
- 0:51Speaker 2: crafting a document that the United States and Iran have
- 0:55Speaker 2: been edging towards signing, But there is no indication that
- 1:00Speaker 2: the signing is going to take place now in the
- 1:02Speaker 2: next few hours. There is absolute fury at the White
- 1:05Speaker 2: House over the decision by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Nettanyah
- 1:10Speaker 2: who to strike militarily at be Route over the course
- 1:14Speaker 2: of the last few hours. It is the last thing
- 1:17Speaker 2: that the President of the United States and his top
- 1:20Speaker 2: security officials wanted to see. The Iranians have immediately responded
- 1:24Speaker 2: saying there is no point in continuing talks with the
- 1:27Speaker 2: United States because they evidently do not have control over
- 1:33Speaker 2: Prime Minister Netanyahu and over the military decisions that he
- 1:37Speaker 2: is making. And there was doubt already about whether this signing,
- 1:42Speaker 2: and it looked like it was going to be some
- 1:44Speaker 2: kind of electronic signing of this memorandum of understanding was
- 1:48Speaker 2: going to take place today. Now I suspect that the
- 1:52Speaker 2: Iranians are going to kick the can further down the road.
- 1:54Speaker 1: What's nniahu playing? It is piece the last thing he wants.
- 1:59Speaker 2: Yeahly, I mean, there is a complete divergence between what
- 2:03Speaker 2: President Donald Trump wants and what Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin
- 2:07Speaker 2: netanya who wants. The American President wants an off ramp.
- 2:11Speaker 2: He wants to be able to say to the country,
- 2:14Speaker 2: even if it's not true that I've signed an agreement
- 2:18Speaker 2: that is better than the twenty fifteen JCPOA, the old
- 2:23Speaker 2: Iran nuclear deal from which he pulled the United States,
- 2:28Speaker 2: and he wants that urgently, not least because his fellow
- 2:31Speaker 2: Republicans who are seeking election in the midterm elections or
- 2:36Speaker 2: re election in many cases, are terrified about the fact
- 2:40Speaker 2: that this war continues and continues to take a real
- 2:44Speaker 2: economic toll on the pocketbooks of voters. The Israeli Prime
- 2:49Speaker 2: Minister doesn't want this thing to end. He was in
- 2:52Speaker 2: it to topple the Iranian regime. He doesn't buy President
- 2:56Speaker 2: Trump's argument that regime change has occurred in Iran certainly
- 3:01Speaker 2: not the kind of regime that Benjamin Ettanya who wanted
- 3:04Speaker 2: to see. And at every turn over the last few weeks,
- 3:08Speaker 2: the Israeli leader has tried to pull the rug out
- 3:11Speaker 2: from beneath the American president. And that's what we saw
- 3:15Speaker 2: again over the last few hours.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Soar Max out of Washington, the prisons and chief correspondent
- 3:20Speaker 1: of Fature Story News.
