Transcript
- 0:08Hey there, my name is Jason Riley.
- 0:09You are listening or watching to watching Two Shot Tuesday, the
- 0:14show where two guys have two shots of alcohol and talk about
- 0:17all kinds of things except when there's three guys.
- 0:20And that's what today's episode is all about with me.
- 0:23As always, if you can see him on your screen, to see him is to
- 0:26love him. Barry T Nixon and the movie guy
- 0:30who you could not love more. Probably our most in demand
- 0:34guest that has ever been at Two Shot Studios.
- 0:37Rob, let's start with you. How are you doing today?
- 0:38Well, I mean, you've just filled my head with things I shouldn't
- 0:42be thinking about how much I'm loves it.
- 0:44I got I got to go, guys. No, I feel great.
- 0:46Everything's. Great, Barry, how are you?
- 0:49I'm doing great too, Jay. Thanks for asking.
- 0:51We're in the middle of a heat wave at the time of this
- 0:53recording. Heat wave, heat wave.
- 0:55We should be getting to the public pool, but instead we're
- 0:57recording an episode and a very valuable one because Rob, you
- 1:01and I just went and saw The Mandalorian and Grogu and we're
- 1:05going to break that down and let our audience know if it's worth
- 1:09your movie going dollar. Absolutely.
- 1:11All right, gentlemen, 100% I can't wait to hear about how
- 1:13this movie tracked for you. And I'll tell you my thoughts.
- 1:16I haven't seen it, my thoughts about the franchise as a whole.
- 1:19But first, as always, we have a format on this show.
- 1:22Barry, why don't you kick us off?
- 1:24What are you having to consume tonight while we talk about
- 1:26this? This is the good stuff, Jay, and
- 1:29I only save it really for once a week when I'm with you and this
- 1:33and this case, our very valued guest, the one and only Rob
- 1:37Pete. So I'm having some Bushmills
- 1:39that's been aged for 12. Luxury luxuries.
- 1:42I can't even say it luxuries. 12 years.
- 1:45OK, 12 years baby and going to you guys, Rob, what have you got
- 1:50over there? I'm drinking a very special
- 1:53edition of President's Choice sparkling water.
- 1:56It's grape soda, flavored water. It's basically like drinking
- 2:00that stuff that you used to get at the donut store fountain,
- 2:04like grape drink. It tastes like that, but there's
- 2:07no sugar and it's just water. It's, it's, it's, it's, it's a
- 2:10fucking miracle, guys. Yeah, food science has come a
- 2:14long way, Jay, what have you got?
- 2:16I have got, you know, I went to my local today and just like
- 2:19your local, they don't have this available anymore.
- 2:21So I'm getting down to the last few sips of the Jameson Black
- 2:25barrel. A goodie, A goodie that not a
- 2:27lot on offer this this spring, apparently.
- 2:31Gentlemen, to your good health. Cheers back at you.
- 2:36So well aged. I mean, this is well aged guys.
- 2:39Yeah, and it used to just be called grape drink as well.
- 2:43Yeah, like they couldn't even call it any soda or anything
- 2:46'cause they didn't really fit that, you know, scientific or
- 2:49chemical definition. So they just have to call it.
- 2:51Juice. Grape juice.
- 2:53Yeah, Yeah, it's not. It's not orange juice, It's
- 2:55orange drink. Yeah, it's like.
- 2:58What do you do with it? You drink it.
- 2:59OK, well, that's what it is. Then.
- 3:00It's drink. Yeah.
- 3:02All right. Here we go.
- 3:04Look, Big, big movie. The very first Star Wars movie
- 3:07to debut in theaters in seven years to high anticipation.
- 3:11We'll get into the numbers of it a little bit later on, but let's
- 3:14talk about as you like. As you as you know, I like to
- 3:17hear is the entire journey, including the build up to see
- 3:21Mandalorian and Grogu. Rob, I made a prediction.
- 3:24I'm not sure if Barry shared it with you.
- 3:25We released it as a short on what you might say about it.
- 3:28I'm wondering how close I came. You revealed that.
- 3:31In your own. Time, yeah.
- 3:32Let's take us through the build up.
- 3:34I'm going to let Barry talk about the build up because there
- 3:36was a bit of a kerfuffle getting it together because of weather.
- 3:38So oh, yeah, there's a weather thing.
- 3:40Yeah, yeah, yeah. So I'll let you, I'll let you
- 3:42take us to the theater and then we'll, we'll, we'll get in the
- 3:45theater. But OK, it was a small
- 3:47kerfuffle. It was raining, was pissing
- 3:49rain. It was like end of the world.
- 3:51It was like Noah's Ark should be built while the rain was coming
- 3:54down. You know, if if you were doing
- 3:55it, then you're already too late, you're dead.
- 3:57However, you know, I called an Uber and so I picked Rob up on
- 4:00the way, so not too bad. We got in the Uber.
- 4:04It's gridlock. It is gridlock.
- 4:06Every street you look down, it's bumper to bumper.
- 4:08Now at the time of this recording, the World Cup is not
- 4:11on. So why is it so busy?
- 4:12We don't know. Just because it was raining, I
- 4:14guess. The rain we.
- 4:15Eventually get to the theater, we're a little sweaty or a
- 4:17little angry. We're coming up against it.
- 4:19We're missing the commercial, Jay, and nobody likes to miss
- 4:22the commercials at the movies. Thankfully, we got there in
- 4:25time. We've got our corn, found our
- 4:26seats, our same seats we always have.
- 4:29And we didn't miss a single one of those depressing Save the
- 4:32Children and cancer commercials. Yeah, we got them all to.
- 4:34Play and we got. All six of them?
- 4:36Yep. Movie.
- 4:37Yeah, exactly. Really depressing.
- 4:40So that's the build up and then it started.
- 4:42Rob, what was your previous impression?
- 4:44I want to hear previous. Was there a Masters of the
- 4:46Universe preview before this movie?
- 4:48There was, wasn't there? No, but there was an Odyssey in
- 4:51full screen IMAX. Right.
- 4:53That's what it was, yeah. That's what it was.
- 4:54But yeah, sadly, Master of the Universe was notably missing,
- 4:57but I am very excited about that.
- 4:59Well, that's for another show, though.
- 5:00Yeah, of course. All right.
- 5:01So this was in IMAX? That's.
- 5:04In 3D. We're wearing glasses again,
- 5:06Jay. First time First time wearing
- 5:07glasses in quite a while. Yeah, I didn't remember the last
- 5:10time we did. What was this like?
- 5:12Take us to Rob. What did we've now begun?
- 5:15It, it was passable, although as far as 3D stuff was concerned,
- 5:18actually my glasses I have, I wear, I just wear like a sort of
- 5:22like HD vision, sort of like glasses that just make my, my
- 5:26vision pop a bit. My sight's pretty good when it
- 5:28when it comes to movies, so near sightedness or whatever, but I
- 5:31still wear them because it just makes everything a little more
- 5:33crisp. But I those when I put the 3D
- 5:35glasses on, they kind of were slipping halfway down my
- 5:37glasses. So I asked Barry and I knew it
- 5:39was a bit of a like, I don't want to do this to him, but
- 5:41maybe we could swap and I'll see if yours fit on my glasses
- 5:44better because it was they fit fine normally, but with my
- 5:47glasses, it became more of a thing.
- 5:48And he was like, well, sure. And I tried them and sure
- 5:52enough, those one were fine really.
- 5:54So 3D was fine, Barry to the rest.
- 5:56Of the other one again if I could just.
- 5:58Say. Very odd.
- 6:00Like a Saint Bernard bringing you some rum when you're
- 6:03trapped. Yeah, it's. 100 percent, 100%.
- 6:07All right, so we get through. We get through the debacle of
- 6:10the glasses. Now we've got a long time ago in
- 6:12a Galaxy far, far away. Does it start with that?
- 6:15Can you tell us that? It doesn't have that.
- 6:17It basically just kind of has a has a blurb about where the
- 6:20Mandalorians at just very quick sort of based on on the shows
- 6:25that have happened already. So it kind of explains where
- 6:26they're at and how they're they're currently out there
- 6:29doing bounties basically for the rebellion or for for the
- 6:31leftover, sort of like I don't know what they're they're trying
- 6:34to create. I don't know what it's called.
- 6:35I forget whatever. New alliance.
- 6:37The new alliance, yeah. The New Republic, maybe?
- 6:40The New Republic. Yeah, that's it.
- 6:41OK. So he's he's sort of running
- 6:44running bounties for Sigourney Weaver's character, who is sort
- 6:47of in charge of that, I guess in charge of doling out this this
- 6:50stuff. And she's an X wing pilot and
- 6:52and probably a commander of some kind.
- 6:54So that's kind of where the movie starts, and I will say
- 6:58that now. Now, based on your prediction, I
- 7:00think you were saying that I think Rob's gonna think that
- 7:02this is kind of a equivalent to watching a few episodes of the
- 7:06show. Like a good episode, but not the
- 7:08best episode, not the. Best of my.
- 7:09Thinking it would be like you've seen better.
- 7:11Episodes you were right on. And it's literally like watching
- 7:14maybe three. Yeah, have a good one.
- 7:17It's like it's like watching 3 back-to-back episodes, maybe 4
- 7:21if if maybe one was longer than the other, that type of thing.
- 7:24Yeah, the first, the first episode is literally the first
- 7:27act. You can hell where the episode
- 7:28would have ended. They they go on the bounty, they
- 7:31get they do the bounty, the bounty's done.
- 7:33That's the end of the episode. That's about 45.
- 7:35Hug it out they. They jump a hug it out,
- 7:38everyone's happy. Barry's getting up, then leave.
- 7:40Ready to leave? Well, see you later.
- 7:41Leave, but not yet. Yeah.
- 7:43So that's kind of how that went, and I guess we shouldn't get too
- 7:46deep into spoiler territory in case I don't know how popular
- 7:49this movie is, to be honest. I don't think it's doing super
- 7:51well so. We're stopping.
- 7:53Like 90 million like opening. Yeah, we're not opening at a
- 7:56lower budget. This is the lowest budgeted Star
- 7:59Wars big screen epic ever. And we're just opening.
- 8:02It will make money. What was that we're going to
- 8:04get? Into the worst opening, but it
- 8:05might make numbers. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 8:07Alright, had the lowest. Budget.
- 8:09So yeah, I, I think, I think there's just not a lot of I
- 8:12think there's not a lot of excitement because of how Star
- 8:14Wars has gone recently. And then really you're giving us
- 8:17Mandalorian that we've been watching on Disney Plus for not
- 8:20for free, but kind of like for watching for free now we're
- 8:23paying OK. So yes, it does have a really
- 8:26great spectacular, sort of like action sequences, maybe more, I
- 8:30would say probably 25 to 30% more visual effects and stuff
- 8:35that make it look more like a movie, but nothing I don't think
- 8:38they could have really done. Maybe a couple of set pieces
- 8:41they couldn't have done in the TV show, but for the most part,
- 8:43they probably could have pulled some of it off.
- 8:46If you see in the commercials, there's those at the walkers and
- 8:50stuff that they kind of go up against.
- 8:52They probably wouldn't have done that in the series.
- 8:53They might have used smaller versions of that stuff in the
- 8:56series. But so I don't know that that's
- 8:58about it. Barry, what did you think about
- 8:59the first sort of like bit of the movie?
- 9:01Yeah, and I mean, I was in, you know, like right away.
- 9:05I thought the story started pretty well.
- 9:06I get it. Did you know it didn't drag as
- 9:10we got a little deeper in, though, I did find that there
- 9:13were a couple of sequences that maybe could have been shorter.
- 9:16I did like the fact that we got to meet Jabba the hot sun son.
- 9:19I didn't know he had a son. And he's also a son who's
- 9:21jacked. He's the only member of the Hut
- 9:24who actually has a gym membership.
- 9:26And now he's like a gladiator on a foreign planet.
- 9:29And so that's how he's making his living.
- 9:30So that's kind of cool. And he, of course, you know,
- 9:33eventually, well, right away when we meet him, he's very
- 9:36clear about saying I'm not like my dad.
- 9:39And so there's a kind of a long him trying to plead his case.
- 9:42And hey, my dad was a gangster, my dad was ruthless.
- 9:45That's not me. Even though I just killed a guy
- 9:485 minutes ago in the gladiatorial arena doesn't
- 9:52matter, it was still cool to see and he looks just like Jabba.
- 9:55Basically it's like an in shape Jabba, right?
- 9:57His face. Rob, I don't you notice that,
- 9:59but the. Face the same nose and yeah.
- 10:02Same eyes. Yeah, exactly same.
- 10:04Like even mouth movements. So it's all in the arms and the
- 10:07and the shoulders and that's where muscles are.
- 10:09Chest. What about?
- 10:10Picture any picture. Not so much.
- 10:13So much. Like beefy Skip, he was beefy.
- 10:15Like he was, he was thicker and, you know, I mean like he was
- 10:18beefy all around. Yeah.
- 10:20Little Jack, he was like a like a long rolly, like a long thick
- 10:24Roly Poly guy, you know what I mean?
- 10:26But he could move quick, which was, I mean, that's not a
- 10:29characteristic you often associate with the hot.
- 10:32But we learned more about them, which was kind of cool.
- 10:34And I don't know whether we visited their home world.
- 10:36I asked Rob about this afterwards.
- 10:37Whether that was the home world, You don't really know.
- 10:39It was a world where they happen to be living.
- 10:42I don't think it was the home world.
- 10:43They've made their home on that world.
- 10:45So yeah, they have taken, no, basically taken over that world,
- 10:49yeah. Yeah, his in the comics, his
- 10:51sister is quite a major bounty hunter, I believe.
- 10:54Or not a bounty hunter. Like she's a major mob boss.
- 10:57I'm not sure if she was ever. Yeah.
- 10:59You're talking about Jabba's sister?
- 11:00Yeah, was there ever a sister? Yeah, so I think these are these
- 11:03are his brother and sister, correct The the.
- 11:05Well, there's the twins. I'm not sure exactly how they
- 11:08tie to him, but we, we rata is, you know, he was the main Hut
- 11:12and he's the son. Son.
- 11:14Yeah. Which again, I don't think
- 11:16anyone knew that he even had his son.
- 11:18I don't know. No, we, we did.
- 11:19There was, it's part of the, it's part of the Clone Wars
- 11:22stuff. There he was in the Clone Wars
- 11:24as a baby, like, like so it would have been 25 years or 25
- 11:28years ago, I guess somewhere around there.
- 11:29He was a baby and he was, he was helped by the Rebel.
- 11:32The rebels helped him because he was kind of outcast as a baby
- 11:36and and he was a bit precocious as a baby and stuff.
- 11:39But he's grown up obviously just doing his own thing and finding
- 11:42his own way. And this is this is how he's
- 11:43found his own way. He's actually played by Jeremy
- 11:45Ellen White, who's from that show The Bear.
- 11:48So he was voiced by a decently well liked actor, you know,
- 11:52Yeah. Oh, just just really quickly,
- 11:54just really quickly, just on the subject of voicing kind of a
- 11:56cool thing, Martin Scorsese voices a character in this film.
- 12:00A pretty minor intro character that happens near the beginning,
- 12:04but he's a, he's sort of an informant type character.
- 12:07I wonder, I guess he's a fan of Star Wars.
- 12:09He was. He was easily, I would say top
- 12:12three voices in the entire movie.
- 12:15Like, he was very good. Yeah, he was surprisingly good.
- 12:17He was engaging. No, not many other people in
- 12:20this movie were super engaging. I would say Jeremy Allen White's
- 12:22Road of the Hut was a bit engaging.
- 12:24He was an interesting character. But they obviously this is where
- 12:27the movie starts to fall apart a bit, I think, is that these
- 12:29characters are all interesting to some degree.
- 12:31They have they have places where they could be interesting, but
- 12:34there's not enough of them. And I think Rd. of the The Road
- 12:36of the fuck, Rd. of the fuck could have.
- 12:39He could have actually been part of the group for longer.
- 12:42I think he was kind of in and out of the movie.
- 12:44And I think that's kind of, I mean, I guess it's difficult to
- 12:47have a giant Hut traveling around with you everywhere you
- 12:49go. Well, that's.
- 12:50The thing you remember that one scene, again, these are minor
- 12:52spoilers, but there was a scene where like Rati even said he
- 12:55couldn't even reach the controls inside the ship.
- 12:58He's too big for the cockpit. So he's not really anything but
- 13:01ballast, baby. He would just be slowing them
- 13:03down. So I can I kind of see why they
- 13:05wouldn't incorporate. It is too bad because he was, he
- 13:07was an interesting character and I wish there was more of him,
- 13:11you know what I mean? Because it was, he was there.
- 13:13But he's a very sympathetic character as well.
- 13:15Yeah, he is. Before we move on one thing
- 13:18else, another thing that we want more of is a shot because there
- 13:21are two shots in every show and absolutely about 3/4 of the way
- 13:24through. So Barry, same thing for you.
- 13:27Same thing brother, some 12 years.
- 13:29Courtesy of our good friends at Bushmills, Rob.
- 13:32Same thing, same ZS over here. All right, here's to you guys.
- 13:37Cheers, cheers. Cheers.
- 13:40All right, so was there anything genuinely surprising about this
- 13:45movie that would have made it stood out and said This is why
- 13:47they made it a movie and not simply an extension of a season?
- 13:51Not in my opinion. No, Barry, Yeah.
- 13:53Because I didn't know anything about Jabba having a son.
- 13:57I guess that was the only surprise for me.
- 13:59And the fact that we got to learn a little bit more about
- 14:01the huts as kind of a species. Maybe that's that's the only
- 14:05thing for me anyway. But like Rob said, he already
- 14:07kind of knew about that from watching the Clone Wars series.
- 14:09So yeah, I don't know. No, it didn't really.
- 14:11And we talked about this on the walk home.
- 14:13There wasn't too much in the way of furtherance of the overall
- 14:16story. Like, it's not like Grogu got
- 14:18any closer to finding his relatives or whatever he's.
- 14:22Trying to get. Home eventually, right?
- 14:24I don't, I think. That's part of the story, right?
- 14:26He's supposed to be, I don't think so, kind of getting.
- 14:27Home No, I don't think so. I think I think the Grogu's
- 14:30story I'm going to get into this a bit because this is where I
- 14:33have the most the most problems with this movie.
- 14:35I told Barry on the way over that I really hope, and I won't
- 14:38say it right away, I'll hold it for now, but I do hope they do
- 14:41one thing and I think if they do that, this could be an
- 14:44interesting thing because otherwise it might be kind of
- 14:46boring. I don't think.
- 14:46I think. I think that we've learned
- 14:48through watching this series that Grogu, the character, Baby
- 14:50Yoda, the character has kind of accepted the fact and, and
- 14:54willingly decided that he wants to be with Dinjar and the
- 14:58Mandalorian, that he is like a father figure to him and that
- 15:02that he has been in his care for so long.
- 15:05And that they are they are in simpatico with each other to
- 15:08some degree. There's something there, there's
- 15:10a bond there. And Grogu has left the Jedi
- 15:13training with Luke to continue to just be with Mando, you know,
- 15:17and that that's that's kind of touching.
- 15:19So what I think they there's a moment here in this movie where,
- 15:23and I'm I won't get into the spoilers in depth of all this,
- 15:25but there is a moment where Din jar and needs some help and
- 15:29maybe Yoda slash Grogu is there and does his best to help.
- 15:33And that is a fun little sequence.
- 15:35I do think that's around the time where Barry might have
- 15:37started to get a bit bored because it was kind of the same
- 15:40stuff over and over again now, But there's a reason for that
- 15:43and I think they could have done this in a much better way.
- 15:45So he he helps Mando kind of recover and it is it, it has
- 15:50some interesting moments in him, a little bit of furtherance of
- 15:53character with Grogu. And I won't say what, but
- 15:55there's a few things that happen in that where you go, OK, he's
- 15:58learning, he's a, he's actually, he is taking responsibility and
- 16:01doing things. The one thing that they didn't
- 16:03do, and I think they should have done is have him finally call
- 16:07Dingarn or Mando father or family or something in English.
- 16:12He should have said because part of that character's story is
- 16:15that he's been, he was part of the, the order 66 where the Jedi
- 16:19Temple was wiped out and all the Jedis were wiped out.
- 16:22He was a, he was equivalent of a 5 year old at that time.
- 16:25He was 25 or something in, in human in our years.
- 16:28He's 50 now. So he's twice that.
- 16:30He's about 10 years old now. He's been with Dinjaran for
- 16:32about 5 years. He's accepted the fact that he
- 16:35wants to be a Mandalorian like his quote UN quote, kind of like
- 16:38his father, right, And that's who he's kind of following
- 16:40along. He's got he's got Mandalorian
- 16:42armor. So it would have been nice for
- 16:44that. I think that that would have
- 16:45been a nice way to give emotional impact to those
- 16:48characters finally having a moment together.
- 16:50Instead, they had Din jar and say the old help the young and
- 16:54then the young help the old. That was the line that came out
- 16:56of that. It should have been Grogu saying
- 16:58like family in in his voice for the first time ever, And maybe
- 17:03that's all he ever says. Doesn't matter.
- 17:05Maybe they could have expanded on it, you know, but just put
- 17:08that out there and I'm telling you, I would have I would have
- 17:11wept like a small newborn baby child.
- 17:14So I just think that's such an opportunity missed.
- 17:17Let's do that. It just ends up being no
- 17:19emotional impact to the entire story, you know?
- 17:21Yeah. All right.
- 17:22Well, Barry, what do you? So while we were on you, Rob,
- 17:25what's your star rating on this one?
- 17:28This is a mildly above average type film.
- 17:31I would give it a three out of five.
- 17:32I would say it's, it's OK, it's OK, It's not, It's not bad.
- 17:36It's a fun watch with with kids. It's just a fun action movie.
- 17:39But there's no depth. So if you want depth, you're not
- 17:42going to get it. You might get a tiny little,
- 17:44just a nugget of depth, you know?
- 17:46Well, we're going to go as deep as one of Barry's squats as you
- 17:49give us your star rating, Barry, and and your final thoughts on
- 17:53Mandalorian Grow Grow goo. Yeah, in this, I completely
- 17:57agree with Rob. I think we're In Sync on this
- 17:59one. I would say not bad.
- 18:01I enjoyed what I saw. I thought the 3D was pretty
- 18:04cool. It looked great for me.
- 18:06It could have been perhaps 15 minutes shorter.
- 18:09It was a little bit of meandering, at least that's my
- 18:11view. But overall, yeah, it's like 3
- 18:15or so episodes of the show kind of put together and yeah, I was
- 18:19along for the ride. I did enjoy.
- 18:21There was one sequence that I really did enjoy, which is where
- 18:24the Mandalorian has to do battle with this like dragon snake and
- 18:28what they called it, which is kind of like it's the most
- 18:30obvious thing they could call it this white snake that looks like
- 18:34a dragon, but they call it as to anyway, it doesn't matter.
- 18:36That was a really cool sequence. That whole battle was pretty
- 18:39awesome. So I I was.
- 18:40There was some, there was some great, great set pieces for
- 18:42sure. There was some good, good
- 18:44fights. That's The thing is Mando is, is
- 18:46the cowboy with no name kind of character.
- 18:48He doesn't have emotion. He wears a helmet.
- 18:51There's nothing that you can't see anything.
- 18:52That's why you need Grogu to be the emotion, right?
- 18:56And that's what they were. They completely failed.
- 18:58Otherwise it was a fun action movie, so.
- 19:00OK, got it. My last question for you before
- 19:03we wrap up, Rob, do you think there's going to be another
- 19:06season or another movie or do you think there's something
- 19:08definitive about the ending on this thing?
- 19:10There's nothing definitive about it.
- 19:11And I don't know, it's hard. It's hard to know what they're
- 19:13going to do because if this, if this continues down the sort of
- 19:16kind of, I don't know, mediocre sort of path that it's on as far
- 19:20as audiences want to be, you know, like taken away by Star
- 19:23Wars. They don't want to just be.
- 19:25That was fun. You know, they want to have a
- 19:26moment where they're transported to a, to a Galaxy far, far away.
- 19:30And I don't think that Disney has been doing that since they
- 19:34started really with with a couple of minor exceptions and
- 19:37with early seasons of Mandalorian.
- 19:38Great. All right, Well, perfect.
- 19:41Rob, thank you once again for being here and really breaking
- 19:43down the only thing you need to know about The Mandalorian and
- 19:46Grogu. You've heard it here today,
- 19:48Barry, as always, thank you. Did you give the star rating?
- 19:51I don't think you gave it a star rating.
- 19:53Oh yeah, Three out of five, three out of.
- 19:54Five. OK, he's already on it.
- 19:56All right. Well then, now we've.
- 19:57Got that? It's not great, Yeah.
