- 0:12Hello friends, and welcome to today's episode of A chapter, A
- 0:16Day Bible Reading, where I, your host Sean, will not talk to you
- 0:21like that anymore. Hello friends, lovely to have
- 0:24you company. I hope you are going well, as
- 0:27today you have decided to, at this very moment, tap on play.
- 0:32And here we are. We are going to read another
- 0:34chapter of the Bible. We are up to the point in Acts
- 0:38where things slow right down as far as a narrative goes.
- 0:41Paul stops running from place to place to place to place, and now
- 0:45he settles into a time that he will spend under lock and key by
- 0:50those more powerful than him. And in that space, he continues
- 0:55to find a way to speak the good news of Jesus.
- 0:59So let us put down whatever it is that's going on for the
- 1:02moment, whether you're walking or lying or driving or sitting.
- 1:08Great to have your company as we settle our hearts and come
- 1:12before God. Hearing His words as recorded in
- 1:17Acts Chapter 24. Five days later, Ananias, the
- 1:31high priest, arrived with some of the Jewish elders and the
- 1:35lawyer Turtleus to present their case against Paul to the
- 1:38Governor. When Paul was called in,
- 1:41Turtleus presented the charges against Paul in the following
- 1:45address to the Governor. You have provided a long period
- 1:49of peace for us Jews and with foresight have enacted reforms
- 1:53for us. For all of this, Your
- 1:56Excellency, we are very grateful to you, but I don't want to bore
- 2:01you, so please give me your attention for only a moment.
- 2:05We have found this man to be a troublemaker who is constantly
- 2:09stirring up riots among the Jews all over the world.
- 2:13He is a ringleader of the cult known as the Nazarenes.
- 2:18Furthermore, he was trying to desecrate the Temple when we
- 2:21arrested him. You can find out the truth of
- 2:24his accusations by examining him yourself.
- 2:27Then the other Jews chimed in, declaring that everything
- 2:31Turtler said was true. The governor then motioned for
- 2:34Paul to speak. Paul said, I know, Sir, that you
- 2:39have been a judge of Jewish affairs for many years, so I
- 2:42gladly present my defense before you.
- 2:45You can quickly discover that I arrived in Jerusalem no more
- 2:49than 12 days ago to worship at the Temple.
- 2:52My accusers never found me arguing with anyone in the
- 2:55Temple, nor stirring up a riot in any synagogue or on the
- 2:59streets of the city. These men cannot prove the
- 3:02things they are accusing me of doing, but I admit that I follow
- 3:06the way which they call a cult. I worship the God of our
- 3:10ancestors, and I firmly believe the Jewish law and everything
- 3:14written in the prophets. I have the same hope in God that
- 3:18these men have that he will raise both the righteous and the
- 3:23unrighteous. Because of this, I always try to
- 3:26maintain a clear conscience before God and all people.
- 3:31After several years away, I returned to Jerusalem with money
- 3:34to aid my people and to offer sacrifices to God.
- 3:38My accusers saw me in the temple as I was completing A
- 3:41purification ceremony. There was no crowd around me and
- 3:45no rioting, but some Jews from the province of Asia were there,
- 3:50and they ought to be here to bring charges if they had
- 3:53anything against me. Ask these men here what crime
- 3:57the Jewish High Council found me guilty of, except for the one
- 4:01time I shouted out. I am on trial before you today
- 4:05because I believe in the resurrection of the dead.
- 4:08At that point, Felix, who was quite familiar with the way,
- 4:11adjourned the hearing and said wait until Lysias, the Garrison
- 4:16commander, arrives, then I will decide the case.
- 4:21He ordered an officer to keep Paul in custody, but to give him
- 4:24some freedom and allow his friends to visit him and take
- 4:28care of his needs. A few days later Felix came back
- 4:32with his wife Drusilla, who was Jewish, sending for Paul.
- 4:37They listened as he told them about faith in Christ Jesus, as
- 4:41he reasoned with them about righteousness and self-control
- 4:45and the coming day of judgement. Felix became frightened.
- 4:49Go away for now, he replied. When it is more convenient, I'll
- 4:53call for you again. He also hoped that Paul would
- 4:56bribe him, so he sent for him quite often and talked with him.
- 5:01After two years went by. In this way, Felix was succeeded
- 5:06by Porsches Festus, And because Felix wanted to gain favour with
- 5:11the Jewish people, he left Paul in prison.
- 5:24Jesus, Sometimes following you can feel like we are strapped to
- 5:28a locomotive, powering in these directions we did not
- 5:33anticipate, and other times following you seems like stuck
- 5:37in a dead end, going nowhere, just being asked to be faithful
- 5:42again and again and again in the challenges of each moment.
- 5:48Lord, as we hear the story of Paul stuck in this limbo for two
- 5:53years, it's a great encouragement that even Paul and
- 5:59his ministry had these moments. So, Lord, I just pray that you
- 6:02strengthen us and continue to let your faith build in US and
- 6:09shape us and inspire us, even if service, true heartfelt service
- 6:15for you and your Kingdom can feel incredibly mundane and dry.
- 6:20And like drudgery, Holy Spirit, give us your comfort.
- 6:27Draw us closer to you. Give us a broader perspective
- 6:32than just this moment so we can be aware that you are a God of
- 6:37the eternal, and that your plans are enormous and perfect, and we
- 6:43can have faith that we can just take one step at a time being
- 6:47faithful to you, and that that is all you call us to do.
- 6:51Thank you, Jesus. We love you and we pray.
- 6:53All of this in your name. Amen.
