Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So this developing news out of the US this morning
- 0:03Speaker 1: to do with the Middle East. Officials there believe Iran
- 0:06Speaker 1: could be preparing to imminently strike Israel with a ballistic missile. Now,
- 0:12Speaker 1: there have been reports in the last few minutes of
- 0:14Speaker 1: air sirens sounding in central Israel. Will keep you up
- 0:18Speaker 1: to speed with what's happening there. First, though, we're going
- 0:21Speaker 1: to Daniel McGlocklin, our US correspondent political commentator, because there
- 0:24Speaker 1: is a vice presidential debate happening in the US today.
- 0:27Speaker 1: But first, Danielle, what is the latest from the White House? Right?
- 0:32Speaker 2: Ryan? So, you know, typically for any US administration, they
- 0:36Speaker 2: have said that they're tracking events very closely, of course,
- 0:40Speaker 2: and they're committed to Israel's defense. What that likely means
- 0:43Speaker 2: is the same thing that happened back in April, where
- 0:46Speaker 2: there was another attack that came from inside Iran and
- 0:49Speaker 2: the US defense forces, both by ship and by air,
- 0:53Speaker 2: helped get rid of about three hundred drones in missiles
- 0:56Speaker 2: basically shoot those down before they got close to Israel.
- 1:00Speaker 2: So if it comes to that, the US will step
- 1:02Speaker 2: in a defensive role. Yeah.
- 1:04Speaker 1: The other big thing happening in the US, of course,
- 1:06Speaker 1: is this what's the final debate in the election? JD.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Vance and Tim Walls because the Trump Harris campaigns aren't
- 1:13Speaker 1: doing another one.
- 1:15Speaker 2: No, Well, Kamala Harris has said, you know, I'm up
- 1:18Speaker 2: for it, and Trump has currently said that he's not.
- 1:20Speaker 2: I think that choice may depend ultimately on how Vance
- 1:25Speaker 2: does tonight against Waltz. You've got this really sort of interesting,
- 1:29Speaker 2: really really different couple of guys, right, You've obviously got
- 1:31Speaker 2: Republican versus Democrat. You've got a Yale law school grad
- 1:35Speaker 2: and former private equity guy versus a former public school
- 1:39Speaker 2: teacher and football coach. You know, very different in their approach.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Vance is very much a kind of a firebrand and
- 1:44Speaker 2: in a lot of ways is more conservative than Trump,
- 1:47Speaker 2: whereas whereas Waltz is a little bit more moderate. You know,
- 1:51Speaker 2: he seems kind of like a nice, sort of older
- 1:53Speaker 2: white guy. To put it that way, but it's true,
- 1:57Speaker 2: and he's going to be aiming for the middle because
- 1:59Speaker 2: some people see Kamla Harris is too far right as
- 2:02Speaker 2: left to progressive.
- 2:03Speaker 1: People hate Van saying.
- 2:06Speaker 2: He is the least liked the vice presidential candidate in
- 2:10Speaker 2: the last thirty years, even LEAs like even less liked
- 2:16Speaker 2: than Sarah Palin, which is saying.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Is saying something. Do you think people are going to
- 2:20Speaker 1: watch this debate? Because I was having a look at
- 2:22Speaker 1: the audience size. There was sixty seven million for the
- 2:26Speaker 1: Trump Harris debate, and the VP debates typically don't do
- 2:32Speaker 1: that well, although Palen, you mentioned Palin Biden in two
- 2:35Speaker 1: thousand and eight, that was the biggest audience for a
- 2:38Speaker 1: VP debate ever, because obviously everybody wanted to see what
- 2:42Speaker 1: Sarah Palin was going to say. Do you think maybe
- 2:45Speaker 1: because Vance is so disliked, that people might tune in
- 2:49Speaker 1: just to see what happens.
- 2:51Speaker 2: Are you suggesting there's going to be some hate watching?
- 2:54Speaker 1: Ryan?
- 2:55Speaker 2: Hey, I actually think you make a really good point,
- 2:57Speaker 2: and I don't mean to overstate, but I do think
- 3:01Speaker 2: these two are going to make a difference to the
- 3:04Speaker 2: presidential candidates in ways that we really don't see that often. Right,
- 3:08Speaker 2: Normally VP picks are pretty safe, but these guys are,
- 3:12Speaker 2: you know, a little especially with Dvance really kind of
- 3:15Speaker 2: out of the mainstream, and for someone who used to
- 3:17Speaker 2: be a vocal vote Trump critic, he's gone really far,
- 3:20Speaker 2: actually further out to the right than Trump has himself.
- 3:24Speaker 2: So his attacks cat ladies. You know his attack Taylor Sworth.
- 3:28Speaker 2: He's repeated these crazy things about people eating pets in
- 3:31Speaker 2: the Midwest. I think there is more bars about this
- 3:35Speaker 2: than in normal years, when you know the VP doesn't
- 3:38Speaker 2: feel like it matters.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I think you might be right there, Danielle.
- 3:41Speaker 1: Thank you very much for your time. Daniel McLoughlin, US
