Speaker 4: zero zero eight get in a little out of my
2:34
Speaker 4: lane here with our next guests, we're going to talk
2:36
Speaker 4: about flowers, all right, to a certain extent. Marjorie Cook
2:40
Speaker 4: and Toy Hardy with the Canaug Garden Club, and they're
2:42
Speaker 4: here to tell us about a big event happening next
2:44
Speaker 4: Monday and Tuesday at the Clay Center. Good morning, and
2:46
Speaker 4: we will start with you. Marjorie, Good morning, Good morning, Dave,
2:49
Speaker 4: thanks for having us, thanks for being here. And Tory
2:51
Speaker 4: very nice to meet you as well. I'm gonna have
2:53
Speaker 4: to have you definitely step into that microphone a little bit,
2:56
Speaker 4: all right, all right, so big event happened at the
2:58
Speaker 4: Clay Center one week from today, also the following day
3:01
Speaker 4: on Tuesday. Marjorie's what's going on here?
3:04
Speaker 6: Yeah, really a wonderful event upcoming. And to break it down,
3:08
Speaker 6: it is a it is like a pop up museum
3:11
Speaker 6: for flowers and all things outdoors. And it is something
3:17
Speaker 6: that our Garden Club does not do but once every
3:20
Speaker 6: twenty years. It is a it is called Motherland Appalachian Beauty.
3:26
Speaker 6: It is a flower show, a Garden Club of America
3:30
Speaker 6: sponsored flower show, and it will have some incredible things
3:34
Speaker 6: on display available Monday afternoon three thirty to five and
3:39
Speaker 6: then all day Tuesday, ten to five. And we just
3:42
Speaker 6: wanted to come on to say this is so unusual
3:45
Speaker 6: and it happens so infrequently. It is something to see.
3:48
Speaker 4: And that's just kind of like a national thing, right,
3:50
Speaker 4: I mean, you have a lot of people that are
3:51
Speaker 4: going to be coming in for this, right we do.
3:53
Speaker 6: We have we expect competitors for this flower show. It
3:56
Speaker 6: is a competition to come from not only West virgin
4:00
Speaker 6: but probably Virginia, North Carolina, Kentucky, and possibly even from farther.
4:06
Speaker 6: So folks bring their specimens and their floral designs and
4:11
Speaker 6: it is. It is going to be fantastic and it
4:14
Speaker 6: obviously with live things, it is a short window and
4:17
Speaker 6: things look good for a few days, so it is
4:19
Speaker 6: here and then it is gone. So we wanted to
4:21
Speaker 6: tell your listeners to come take a look because it
4:24
Speaker 6: is going to be gorgeous toilets.
4:26
Speaker 4: Let's bring you in here. Marjorie, I've known each other
4:29
Speaker 4: for a while, but you're a newcomer to the show.
4:30
Speaker 4: What's're involvement in all this.
4:32
Speaker 5: I'm one of the Flower Show chairs. So we developed
4:35
Speaker 5: and wrote the schedule for this Flower Show, and it
4:38
Speaker 5: really highlights Appalachian what is unique and wonderful about the
4:42
Speaker 5: area that we live in. You know, West Virginia is
4:44
Speaker 5: the only state this is all within the Appalachian Mountains,
4:48
Speaker 5: and it makes us unique. You know, our topography is unusual.
4:52
Speaker 5: We've got the mountains. It makes our communities very small
4:55
Speaker 5: because we can't live anywhere else, and that means that
4:58
Speaker 5: they have to very self reliant. They have to grow
5:02
Speaker 5: their own vegetables, they had to build their own house,
5:04
Speaker 5: they had to even be their own doctors.
5:06
Speaker 7: One of the.
5:06
Speaker 5: Classes that we have is a container garden and it's
5:12
Speaker 5: plant five plants that might be in a pioneer garden.
5:14
Speaker 5: So you're not only going to be planting your squash,
5:18
Speaker 5: you're also going to be planting your sage because that
5:20
Speaker 5: helps with upper respiratory conditions.
5:23
Speaker 4: Well, certainly, that's really interesting. I have information posted about
5:27
Speaker 4: this on my social media because this is a big
5:29
Speaker 4: deal for Charleston. The hostess event, right.
5:31
Speaker 6: It is, and we are at the Clay Center. It's
5:33
Speaker 6: easy access in and out. And the four classes that
5:37
Speaker 6: we showcase. We've got floral design, so in that case
5:41
Speaker 6: you think of flower arrangements, but some are very modern
5:45
Speaker 6: and some will be very different. Some will we have
5:49
Speaker 6: quilt displays of flower designs that look like quilts, very unusual.
5:55
Speaker 6: So we've got floral design, We've got horticulture, which means
5:59
Speaker 6: cuts dems or cut branches, and all of them are competing,
6:03
Speaker 6: so you're going to get to see all of the finest.
6:06
Speaker 6: Then we have a photography component of the exhibit huge,
6:10
Speaker 6: and then botanical arts, and I'm going to kick it
6:13
Speaker 6: to Tory.
6:14
Speaker 4: To tell you how botanical arts without your major in
6:17
Speaker 4: college sounds.
6:21
Speaker 5: Is crafting for adults. This way I like to look
6:24
Speaker 5: at it. Botanical arts are entries in a floor in
6:27
Speaker 5: a flower show that are made out of all plant materials.
6:30
Speaker 5: So that can be pine needles, it can be the
6:36
Speaker 5: stamens of a flower, and but it has to be
6:39
Speaker 5: all natural. And they can be the surf. They can
6:41
Speaker 5: have surface treatment, they can be painted, they can be shellacked,
6:44
Speaker 5: they can be varnished. And so we have classes. One
6:48
Speaker 5: of the classes we have is uh since we are
6:52
Speaker 5: West Virginia has the newest national park, one of the
6:56
Speaker 5: classes is Badge of Travels and is to make a
6:59
Speaker 5: badge the real imagined State Park.
7:02
Speaker 4: Okay, how big is this stuff? I mean as far
7:04
Speaker 4: as nationwide, I mean as far as a hobby for
7:07
Speaker 4: a lot of people. It's a profession. But I mean
7:09
Speaker 4: how popular is this?
7:10
Speaker 7: Yes?
7:10
Speaker 6: Well, we Tory and I are both members of a
7:13
Speaker 6: local club called Canag Garden Club. We are one of
7:17
Speaker 6: two hundred clubs nationwide and all total, there are eighteen
7:21
Speaker 6: thousand members in that club, so we have a national affiliation.
7:25
Speaker 6: Canag Garden Club is the only GCA club in the
7:29
Speaker 6: state and we're trying to just grow popularity.
7:33
Speaker 8: It is.
7:34
Speaker 6: We not only have an interest in floral design, but
7:37
Speaker 6: our garden club is very interested in conservation, and I'm
7:42
Speaker 6: missing a component of education. So part of us wants
7:46
Speaker 6: to get folks to the show not just for the beauty,
7:49
Speaker 6: but there are educational classes, students would be interested, folks
7:54
Speaker 6: who like wandering in museums, folks who are gardeners, and
8:00
Speaker 6: to a great group, and Dave, I want to get
8:02
Speaker 6: you there, all.
8:03
Speaker 4: Right, that sounds good. As I said, I'm kind of
8:06
Speaker 4: out of my lane on this. Marjorie reached out to
8:07
Speaker 4: me about this, and I said, sure, come in talk
8:09
Speaker 4: about because this really is a big deal to have
8:11
Speaker 4: this in Charleston and again, and I'll get back to
8:13
Speaker 4: it here one second. Do need to let you know
8:14
Speaker 4: what The Dave Island Show in five eighty Live is
8:16
Speaker 4: brought to you by your hometown baseball team, the Charleston
8:19
Speaker 4: Dirty Birds. We'll talk about the Birds a little bit
8:21
Speaker 4: later on in the show. They have made it to
8:22
Speaker 4: the Championship Round. Games one and two will be played
8:25
Speaker 4: Tomorrow night and Wednesday night at Gomart Ballpark here in Charleston, Charleston,
8:28
Speaker 4: taking on the Revolution of York. You can visit dirty
8:31
Speaker 4: Birds Baseball dot Com from information and again, Jill Garin,
8:34
Speaker 4: I think for the third straight day is going to
8:36
Speaker 4: be on the show. Co it up just a little
8:38
Speaker 4: bit later on. It is worth noting getting back to
8:40
Speaker 4: the show, Tory and Marjorie, that admission is free, so
8:42
Speaker 4: you certainly can't argue about the price.
8:44
Speaker 6: Yes, yes, and we're trying to encourage folks like you know,
8:49
Speaker 6: Edwood Summit to bring buses of folks to come see it.
8:51
Speaker 4: That'll be kind of cool.
8:52
Speaker 6: Yeah, it is a short, short lived show. And Dave,
8:55
Speaker 6: the show compliments a zone meeting for members who are
9:02
Speaker 6: coming from a four state region, so that is one
9:06
Speaker 6: of the primary reasons for these folks coming into town.
9:08
Speaker 6: So we have about one hundred and fifty guests coming
9:11
Speaker 6: to Charleston and they have tours all over the city
9:14
Speaker 6: to see various points of interest.
9:16
Speaker 4: What will you take them on on the tours? I mean,
9:18
Speaker 4: you may not be serving as a tour gap. But
9:20
Speaker 4: because I was listening to the morning news this morning
9:22
Speaker 4: and we just and I'm going to kind of butcher
9:25
Speaker 4: the story, but we have two buildings here that have
9:28
Speaker 4: been added i think to the National Historical Register, and
9:31
Speaker 4: one of those is Capital Market and the other is
9:34
Speaker 4: the many Keatam Shrine. So that's what it'd be a
9:37
Speaker 4: good place to start.
9:38
Speaker 5: Well, we have one of those in our tours. They're
9:41
Speaker 5: going to be going to the Capitol.
9:43
Speaker 4: Well, you got anybody from out of town, you got
9:45
Speaker 4: to take them to Capital.
9:45
Speaker 5: Marking to the Capital Market. We're also doing having a
9:49
Speaker 5: tour or the art display at the Clay Center. And
9:53
Speaker 5: the other one is a hike on the newest trail
9:56
Speaker 5: the Jones I forget the name of it, Louden Heights Road,
10:02
Speaker 5: the piece of property that they just cut new trails in.
10:06
Speaker 6: Yeah, and we have Bev Campbell, one of our club members,
10:09
Speaker 6: is taking folks on a hike on that trails.
10:11
Speaker 4: I understand it.
10:12
Speaker 6: And we have the president of the Garden Club of
10:15
Speaker 6: America coming to Charleston for this event. So it's it's
10:18
Speaker 6: a wonderful opportunity for the you know, for the city
10:21
Speaker 6: to showcase what is beautiful here. And we just really
10:25
Speaker 6: hope folks can come to the show to appreciate the
10:28
Speaker 6: floral designs, the botanical arts, the photography, and the horticulture.
10:33
Speaker 6: So it's it's really is something for everyone and we
10:36
Speaker 6: really thank you for the opportunity.
10:38
Speaker 9: Yeah.
10:38
Speaker 6: Absolutely, And it highlights Appalachia. The show is called Motherland
10:43
Speaker 6: Appalachian beauty.
10:45
Speaker 4: It's it's certainly apply named. And again it's going to
10:48
Speaker 4: be next Monday and Tuesday at the Clay Center Monday
10:52
Speaker 4: evening hours I think.
10:53
Speaker 6: Monday three thirty five pm, so a short window, but
10:57
Speaker 6: the all the specimens will look the best on Tuesday
10:59
Speaker 6: on Monday.
11:00
Speaker 4: The specimens, like the way you say that, the specimens,
11:03
Speaker 4: but that's going to be on Tuesdays. I mean, this is,
11:05
Speaker 4: this is it's a great event to have this in Charleston.
11:07
Speaker 4: It really is now. I've got information posted on my
11:10
Speaker 4: social media pages about it. We have a little poster
11:13
Speaker 4: on there if you want to, if you want to
11:14
Speaker 4: check it out. I know you guys are are going
11:16
Speaker 4: to be really busy with that. Marjorie Tory, I appreciate
11:18

18:20
Speaker 4: and welcome to the show.
18:22
Speaker 18: Good morning, great to be here with you. Hey, I
18:26
Speaker 18: understand someone might be celebrating a birthday.
18:28
Speaker 4: Yes, it is my birthday. Thank you so much. I
18:31
Speaker 4: appreciate you bringing it up. And also we kind of
18:33
Speaker 4: got our wires cross there that may have been on me,
18:36
Speaker 4: So I apologize. I had you today, you thought it
18:39
Speaker 4: was another day. But luckily we have Gail Carterner to
18:41
Speaker 4: come to the rescue of both of us, right.
18:44
Speaker 18: That's what she does each and every day.
18:46
Speaker 4: I apologize for that. I'll get with you a but
18:48
Speaker 4: I do want to talk about an event last week.
18:52
Speaker 4: The University of Charleston had an event at the Innovation Hub,
18:55
Speaker 4: which is downtown. I got to say that is a
19:00
Speaker 4: that is a great, great facility and a great addition
19:02
Speaker 4: to downtown Charleston.
19:04
Speaker 18: Yes, we're very pleased with how things are going. One
19:09
Speaker 18: of the main programs that we offer there is called
19:11
Speaker 18: a Business Accelerator Program, and it provides workshops, training, coaching, mentoring,
19:19
Speaker 18: and advising to existing small and medium sized businesses to
19:23
Speaker 18: help them scale up and grow. The program is funded
19:26
Speaker 18: through a US e DA grant as well as matching
19:30
Speaker 18: funds from the Benefit Venedem Foundation in the City of Charleston,
19:35
Speaker 18: so it provides all of those things to small businesses
19:38
Speaker 18: at no cost to them. So it's about a five
19:41
Speaker 18: month experience. Most of the work is done virtually, but
19:46
Speaker 18: we bring everybody together as a cohort once a month,
19:49
Speaker 18: so it provides for some great networking opportunities for the
19:54
Speaker 18: businesses to participate.
19:55
Speaker 4: And I had an opportunity to sit down on that
19:57
Speaker 4: meeting last week and I learned a heck of a
19:59
Speaker 4: lot or, to be honest with you, just kind of
20:01
Speaker 4: sitting there and taking it all in. Not that I
20:03
Speaker 4: have a lot of business acumen myself, but I'd like
20:05
Speaker 4: to be around those that do, and I learned a
20:07
Speaker 4: lot and it sounds like it's beneficial to everybody involved.
20:12
Speaker 18: Yes, absolutely, we're getting terrific feedback from the businesses that
20:16
Speaker 18: have completed the Business Accelerator program. We're now in the
20:21
Speaker 18: middle of Cohort number three, actively recruiting for another group
20:26
Speaker 18: of eight to twelve businesses that will join us in
20:28
Speaker 18: January for Cohort number four. So encourage everybody to just
20:34
Speaker 18: jump on the University of Charleston website just search on
20:38
Speaker 18: innovation and you'll find our Downtown Innovation Hub and the
20:42
Speaker 18: Business Accelerator Program. Very easy application process, or if you're
20:46
Speaker 18: in the neighborhood, have a small business. Just stop down
20:50
Speaker 18: and visit us on Capitol Street and we'll be happy
20:53
Speaker 18: to tell them more about the program and see if
20:55
Speaker 18: it's a good shit for them.
20:57
Speaker 4: Yeah, we're talking with doctor Marty Roth from the University
20:59
Speaker 4: of Charles record semester. I understand for enrollment at u
21:03
Speaker 4: SEE talk about that.
21:05
Speaker 18: Yes, absolutely, we're very pleased. Given the pressures that we're
21:09
Speaker 18: all reading about in higher education, that drop in the
21:13
Speaker 18: number of students graduating from high school and so forth,
21:17
Speaker 18: we're very pleased that we brought in over eight hundred
21:20
Speaker 18: new students to u SEE this fall semester, students that
21:25
Speaker 18: are enrolled in a degree seeking program. Our high water
21:30
Speaker 18: mark over the past five years was seven hundred and eight,
21:33
Speaker 18: so significant increase for us, so very excited, and that
21:37
Speaker 18: brings our total enrollment to a high water mark as well,
21:42
Speaker 18: with over twenty eight hundred students enrolled for the start
21:45
Speaker 18: of the fall semester. So as you can imagine, we're
21:49
Speaker 18: become pretty diversified campus with lots of different programs offered
21:54
Speaker 18: in Charleston, in Beckley and online, serving traditional high school
22:00
Speaker 18: graduates as well as adult learners. So certain programs we
22:05
Speaker 18: saw really great increases in enrollments. Others didn't do quite
22:10
Speaker 18: as well, but overall the net effect was terrific for
22:14
Speaker 18: us as fault.
22:15
Speaker 4: What's responsible, Doctor Roth, for more people choosing the University
22:19
Speaker 4: at Charleston.
22:20
Speaker 18: Yeah, I think it's a few things, Dave. One is
22:23
Speaker 18: we are extremely student focused. That's our primary core value.
22:28
Speaker 18: It's something we talk about each and every day. That's
22:31
Speaker 18: why we're here. That's what gets us excited to get
22:34
Speaker 18: up and go to work every day is having the
22:37
Speaker 18: opportunity to work with students and help transform their lives
22:41
Speaker 18: and enable them to achieve their personal professional goals. We
22:46
Speaker 18: also have a mission that carries across all of our
22:49
Speaker 18: program and that's we're going to educate each and every
22:52
Speaker 18: student for three things, a life of productive work, enlightened living,
22:56
Speaker 18: and community involvement. So we are very committed to our
23:01
Speaker 18: core values, to our mission statement, and I think what
23:05
Speaker 18: that ends up providing is students with a really high
23:09
Speaker 18: quality experience with faculty and staff who care about them,
23:13
Speaker 18: who work very closely with them. And our kind of
23:17
Speaker 18: our view is once we admit a student to the
23:20
Speaker 18: University of Charleston, it's becomes our responsibility to make sure
23:26
Speaker 18: they're having a great experience and to get them to
23:28
Speaker 18: the finish line.

23:42
Speaker 4: What's got you excited on campus this semester? Sir? What's
23:45
Speaker 4: what's what's on your planner? And what's what's making you
23:48
Speaker 4: smile these days?
23:49
Speaker 18: Yeah, great question, Dave.
23:51
Speaker 19: Well.
23:51
Speaker 18: Of course, athletics is very big for us here at
23:54
Speaker 18: you See, so our false sport teams are off to
23:56
Speaker 18: a great start. We had a terrific homecoming weekend and
24:00
Speaker 18: our football team had a great victory down at UC Stadium.
24:06
Speaker 18: Both of our soccer teams one volleyball team hosted a
24:09
Speaker 18: tournament and did great. So Athletics is always a lot
24:12
Speaker 18: of fun for us here at U SEE, and we
24:14
Speaker 18: enjoy supporting our student athletes as they do what they
24:18
Speaker 18: love to do. We're also very proud of the work
24:22
Speaker 18: that we continue to do with the first responder community
24:25
Speaker 18: here in West Virginia. In the fall of twenty twenty two,
24:28
Speaker 18: we held three hundred emergency medical services personnel earn a
24:33
Speaker 18: fifteen college credit leadership certificate program that was funded by
24:40
Speaker 18: Governor Justice and the Legislature. And this fall we have
24:45
Speaker 18: close to four hundred law enforcement personnel enrolled in a
24:50
Speaker 18: senior Leadership Certificate for law enforcement through a grant that
24:54
Speaker 18: we were able to able to procure through the US
24:58
Speaker 18: Department of Justice with the help of Senators Capitol and
25:02
Speaker 18: Senators Mansion. So we're really committed to take the deep
25:07
Speaker 18: expertise that we have in leadership education and training and
25:11
Speaker 18: provided to different parts of the West Virginia community that
25:16
Speaker 18: really could benefit from it and first responder community EMS,
25:21
Speaker 18: law enforcement corrections or groups that were really proud to help.
25:25
Speaker 4: And before we let you go, what are some things
25:26
Speaker 4: people can look forward to in the future. I know
25:29
Speaker 4: you got a golf tournament coming up. I'm going to
25:31
Speaker 4: get into that a little bit later on. But what
25:33
Speaker 4: else is in the future for the University of Charleston.
25:36
Speaker 18: Yeah, So, Dave, if we're not innovative, I don't know
25:39
Speaker 18: what we are here at, you see. So we launched
25:42
Speaker 18: three new programs this fall. A Doctor of Nurse anesthesia
25:46
Speaker 18: practice program and partnership with CMC, a bachelor's degree in
25:53
Speaker 18: Criminal Justice leadership as well as a master's in Mental
25:58
Speaker 18: health counseling. And we're in the process of working on
26:01
Speaker 18: some new offerings that we hope to bring online in
26:05
Speaker 18: the fall of twenty twenty five, including a bachelor's degree
26:11
Speaker 18: in nutrition and an artificial intelligence major within our computer
26:16
Speaker 18: science degree. So we're always trying to identify what are
26:20
Speaker 18: the areas where there's a great demand for jobs and
26:24
Speaker 18: opportunities for us to work with students of all ages
26:28
Speaker 18: and backgrounds and provide them with the skills to get
26:31
Speaker 18: great jobs here in West Virginia and throughout the region.
26:34
Speaker 4: And I'll just throw the center as we close on
26:36
Speaker 4: this golf tournament, there is a fundraiser for the University
26:38
Speaker 4: of Charleston coming up on October the eighteenth at Edgewood
26:42
Speaker 4: Country Club. Noontime, shotguns start, lunch provided by Chick fil A,
26:45
Speaker 4: eleven o'clock and it's on a Friday, if my calendar
26:49
Speaker 4: glancing is correct, So be a good way to kick
26:52
Speaker 4: off for a weekend early, play a little golf and
26:54
Speaker 4: raise money for UC.
26:56
Speaker 18: That's absolutely right. Will Johnson does a terrific job coaching
27:00
Speaker 18: both our men's and women's teams. They're having a great
27:03
Speaker 18: fall season as well, and it will be an opportunity
27:05
Speaker 18: not only to play on a great course and I
27:08
Speaker 18: have some great food, but to meet our golf student
27:11
Speaker 18: athletes who are from all over the state, all over
27:14
Speaker 18: the country, all over the world. Really terrific young men
27:17
Speaker 18: and women that you know everybody would enjoyed having a
27:19
Speaker 18: chance to meet.
27:20
Speaker 4: Indeed, doctor Marty Roth, I appreciate you being flexible this morning.
27:23
Speaker 4: We had a little mess up on my end one
27:25

27:28
Speaker 4: Carter was right on top of it and got you in.
27:30

27:34

32:57
Speaker 4: starts at six thirty and if necessary, the rain date
33:00
Speaker 4: will be Wednesday night. It's a regular commercial here. Tickets

Speaker 4: run sale at each of the eight Canau County High schools,
33:05
Speaker 4: Gorbie's Music in South Charleston and at lateley Field for

Speaker 4: eight Boxer at the Gate on the day of the
33:09
Speaker 4: show for ten dollars, and if you're unable to attend
33:11
Speaker 4: in person, the event will be live stream on the
33:13
Speaker 4: WV Gazette Mail's website. TEXTA that was written just like
33:17
Speaker 4: a commercial. Joe that was impressive, very impressive. Joe Garren
33:21
Speaker 4: from the Dirty Birds back again. How you doing. I've
33:25
Speaker 4: lost my voice a little bit.
33:26
Speaker 9: That's because we were screaming pretty hard from winning the
33:28
Speaker 9: Southern Division championship. But we're going to power through.
33:31
Speaker 4: And we also got the Boss, Andy Shay here, Andy,
33:33
Speaker 4: good morning, thank you for much to be here.
33:34
Speaker 22: I lost my voice after game one. So now I'm
33:37
Speaker 22: actually rebounding a little bit more, so I'm a little
33:39
Speaker 22: ahead of that.
33:40
Speaker 4: All right. So we've made it to the championship round,
33:42
Speaker 4: and Jill, you were here just about every day last
33:44
Speaker 4: week talking about it and for the as I was
33:46
Speaker 4: joking during the break there, you guys are going to
33:48
Speaker 4: be happy not to be playing a team called Gastonia
33:50
Speaker 4: because you played him for like seven hundred straight games
33:53
Speaker 4: or something ridiculous like that.
33:54
Speaker 9: We played them for the final six games of the
33:56
Speaker 9: regular season and then played them for the playoff games
33:59
Speaker 9: as well, so it's ten games in a row against them.
34:00
Speaker 9: Now we're playing York. We've only seen them six times
34:03
Speaker 9: this season, so it's going to be a lot different.
34:05
Speaker 4: Have we done against yorksion not bad?
34:07
Speaker 9: So remember in June, that was when we were dealing
34:09
Speaker 9: with all of the players finally being signed and by
34:12
Speaker 9: the major league team, So that was when we were
34:14
Speaker 9: in a bit of a rut. So New York has
34:16
Speaker 9: not seen the new and improved dirty words.
34:18
Speaker 4: Andy, let's talk about this championship run. I mean, you know,
34:22
Speaker 4: you guys had had a great season, struggled at times,
34:25
Speaker 4: but rebound it as quality sports teams are apt to do.
34:29
Speaker 4: Went down to well, you started here and then you
34:31
Speaker 4: went down to Gastonia and you were able to wrap
34:33
Speaker 4: up this series. How big is this now for the
34:35
Speaker 4: Dirty Birds to be in the championship round.
34:37
Speaker 7: Oh, it's amazing.
34:38
Speaker 22: And I mean, first of all, I wouldn't mind playing
34:39
Speaker 22: Gastonia considering we just we just celebrated on their fields
34:43
Speaker 22: two times in a week. I'm pretty happy about that.
34:46
Speaker 22: But now it's been absolutely amazing, and I mean, this
34:49
Speaker 22: is it's it's just been a lot of fun. And
34:51
Speaker 22: I think that, you know, taking a step back, the
34:54
Speaker 22: relationship that I have with PJ Phillips and we've kind
34:57
Speaker 22: of we've been talking about it a ton, and we've
34:58
Speaker 22: done this before in a sense, but it's so much
35:00
Speaker 22: more special here. And having all of the fans that
35:03
Speaker 22: we had in Gastonia this past weekend, I mean, it
35:06
Speaker 22: was NonStop discussion. I mean there was really more talk
35:08
Speaker 22: about the amount of fans that we had there than
35:10
Speaker 22: probably what was going on on the field.
35:12
Speaker 7: So it is just unbelievably exciting.
35:14
Speaker 22: It's so amazing and just so energizing having the community
35:18
Speaker 22: support it so much, and the guys are great, you know,
35:21
Speaker 22: like we mentioned, that's the beauty of having a two
35:23
Speaker 22: half season that as great as we were the first
35:26
Speaker 22: three weeks, then we lost like eight key impact players
35:30
Speaker 22: getting signed. We lost the arguably the best player in
35:33
Speaker 22: Atlantic League history to injury right around that time.
35:36
Speaker 7: So we did have, you know, a little down period.
35:38
Speaker 22: But then as soon as the second half hit, we
35:41
Speaker 22: had a revamped pitching rotation, We had a revamped lineup.
35:45
Speaker 22: Some of the guys that were kind of struggling in
35:47
Speaker 22: the first half have been absolutely dominant the second half
35:50
Speaker 22: and in the playoffs. So, I mean, these guys are
35:52
Speaker 22: playing great pitching, hitting, you know, coaching, you name it.
35:55
Speaker 7: They're really hitting on all cylinders.
35:58
Speaker 4: Talking again Andy Shane, Joe Gearin from the Dirty Birds,
36:00
Speaker 4: and you know, uh, this was such a history of
36:03
Speaker 4: baseball in Charleston. We talk about going back, you know,
36:06
Speaker 4: to the Senators and the Charlie's and the alley Cats
36:08
Speaker 4: and the Power and and all of the all the
36:11
Speaker 4: names we've had, to the Wheelers and and and to
36:13
Speaker 4: just bring that back again and to have people seriously
36:17
Speaker 4: jacked up about baseball again in.
36:19
Speaker 7: Charleston, it's amazing.
36:20
Speaker 22: I mean, I love that's one of the most special
36:22
Speaker 22: things to me since I've lived here and since I've
36:24
Speaker 22: been talking to people and everything that when you talk
36:26
Speaker 22: to people, it is kind of funny and so cool
36:29
Speaker 22: hearing them talk about their memories when it was the Charlie's,
36:32
Speaker 22: hearing their memories when it was the alley Cats or
36:34
Speaker 22: the Wheelers, and this happened, and I remember I went
36:37
Speaker 22: with my grandfather and I can't wait to take my grandkids.
36:39
Speaker 22: And you know, all of those memories that have been
36:42
Speaker 22: ingrained in this community. Uh, it's just so amazing and
36:46
Speaker 22: just fulfilling the hearing those and then being part of
36:49
Speaker 22: it making new memories now. And just the electricity. The
36:53
Speaker 22: energy at the ballpark last week was second to none.
36:55
Speaker 22: I mean those Tuesday and Wednesday games. Even Wednesday we were,
36:58
Speaker 22: you know, all due respect, we were a little flat
37:00
Speaker 22: on the field. It's still it felt like postseason baseball.
37:03
Speaker 7: It was awesome.
37:04
Speaker 4: And you referenced the trip down to Gastonia. I saw
37:08
Speaker 4: some of those pictures, guys that were posted online. I
37:10
Speaker 4: thought these were taken from a home game. I thought
37:12
Speaker 4: these were taken from gomart Ballpark, but they were Actually
37:14
Speaker 4: you had that many fans that either lived in the
37:17
Speaker 4: area or made the trip down to Gastonia.
37:18
Speaker 22: You're spot on, and I'm sorry, especially that last game,
37:21
Speaker 22: there's no chance that it didn't positively affect our outcome,
37:25
Speaker 22: especially Saturday. I mean you could see how fired up
37:29
Speaker 22: the guys were getting from having that huge, awesome section
37:32
Speaker 22: and frankly there were multiple sections. I mean, that's what
37:34
Speaker 22: was so cool is that it really did. I mean,
37:37
Speaker 22: it didn't feel like an away game to me, and
37:39
Speaker 22: I don't think it did to the players, and I
37:41
Speaker 22: think that translated just massively to the results.
37:45
Speaker 4: Talking to Andy Shane Joe Garen of the Dirty Birds,
37:47
Speaker 4: the Birds have advanced to the Championship round. First two
37:50
Speaker 4: games that Gomart Ballpark, The Dave Allen Show and five
37:52
Speaker 4: YE Live has brought to you partly by Hustin's Pizza.
37:55
Speaker 4: At your favorite Hustins this month, get a large at
37:56
Speaker 4: and inch pepperoni pizza and an eight inch chocolate chip
37:59
Speaker 4: cookie for only two twenty three to ninety nine. Do
38:01
Speaker 4: you all us talk about promotions any same thing special
38:03
Speaker 4: going on, same thing as last week.
38:05
Speaker 9: As you've mentioned before, we are very just superstitious in
38:08
Speaker 9: the baseball world. We are not changing the promotions kids
38:11
Speaker 9: twelve and under get in for free two dollars, hot dogs, popcorn, soda, beer.
38:16
Speaker 9: The kids zone will be there as well when am
38:18
Speaker 9: issaying bark in the park as well.
38:20
Speaker 4: And this is basically the same format as was the
38:23
Speaker 4: series against Gastonia, right as. I mean, you'll play two
38:25
Speaker 4: here and then you go on the road for the rest.
38:27
Speaker 9: YEP best of five series two here and then you
38:29
Speaker 9: can watch everything else on Flow Baseball or make the
38:31
Speaker 9: trip up to York.
38:32
Speaker 4: Up to York, how far is that from here? Approximately
38:34
Speaker 4: off the top of your head.
38:35
Speaker 7: Well, hopefully we.
38:36
Speaker 22: Don't hit the insane amount of construction that we had
38:40
Speaker 22: down in Gastonia, but I think without that five five
38:43
Speaker 22: and a.
38:43
Speaker 4: Half hours, all right, talk about the mood in the
38:45
Speaker 4: clubhouse when when you guys clinched, I know you guys
38:48
Speaker 4: were there. Talk about what that was like when you clinched.
38:51
Speaker 7: I think it's amazing.
38:52
Speaker 22: I think that, you know, And that's what's so awesome
38:54
Speaker 22: about this league that whether it's the guys that have
38:58
Speaker 22: joined us within the last month they were celebrating and
39:00
Speaker 22: happy and post on Instagram as much as the guys
39:03
Speaker 22: who were here in spring training.
39:04
Speaker 7: I mean they really have jailed.
39:06
Speaker 22: Well, they all have such a common goal that as
39:10
Speaker 22: excited as they were, it was you know, it was
39:12
Speaker 22: really kind of cool. I thing. I think it was genuine.
39:14
Speaker 22: It wasn't some cliche that they were saying, you know,
39:16
Speaker 22: it's not over yet. I mean, they were very, very excited,
39:19
Speaker 22: they're very happy and everything, but they also knew we've
39:22
Speaker 22: got one more week of business to do.
39:24
Speaker 4: And again the series is going to start tomorrow and
39:26
Speaker 4: actually get two here at Gomar Ballpark. And as Jill said,
39:29
Speaker 4: all of those promotions from the two dollars stuff to
39:32
Speaker 4: the kid zone to to bring your dogs out, everything
39:34
Speaker 4: that happened just like it was last.
39:36
Speaker 9: Year, exact same as everything. If you have questions, go
39:38
Speaker 9: to our social media. We have all the information there
39:40
Speaker 9: also to jordybirds baseball dot com.
39:42
Speaker 4: And should people plan on getting their tickets like, I mean,
39:46
Speaker 4: do you do you want people to get them in
39:47
Speaker 4: advance or just to show up either. We just want
39:50
Speaker 4: people to come up best come.
39:51
Speaker 9: But I mean, if you have a specific seat that
39:53
Speaker 9: you like, again, if you were here Tuesday and Wednesday
39:55
Speaker 9: and you were in a seat, make sure you sit there.
39:58
Speaker 9: N to win this series, We're superstitious, So go to
40:00
Speaker 9: jordybirdsbaseball dot Com and get that specific seat that you want.
40:03
Speaker 4: I love the Jill and I share the superstition thing. Andy,
40:06
Speaker 4: I guess you're a true baseball gat to. I guess
40:08
Speaker 4: you do as well.
40:08
Speaker 2: Right.
40:08
Speaker 22: Well, Friday night, since we got there a little late,
40:11
Speaker 22: I realized last minute that I forgot a belt, so
40:14
Speaker 22: I was beltless for the first time. So damn well,
40:17
Speaker 22: was beltless the next day. And I'm looking like I'm
40:20
Speaker 22: going to be beltless moving forward.
40:21
Speaker 4: So if you see Andy with his pants down, it's okay.
40:24
Speaker 4: Don't call the police. It's okay. It's okay. Talk about
40:27
Speaker 4: the new manager of PJ Phillips. I mean, you had
40:30
Speaker 4: him in here on opening day, you guess were in
40:32
Speaker 4: the studio here. Talk about what he's brought to this team.
40:34
Speaker 7: Absolutely so.
40:35
Speaker 22: I mean I've PJ and I've known each other and
40:37
Speaker 22: kind of been together for the last five years, and
40:41
Speaker 22: he brings such a different demeanor, vibe, and attitude than
40:44
Speaker 22: any other manager in our league. And I think that
40:47
Speaker 22: the way that he recruits players, it fits perfect to
40:51
Speaker 22: what he's trying to do.
40:52
Speaker 7: So, I mean, he really he has an amazing network.
40:54
Speaker 7: I think everyone likes him.
40:56
Speaker 22: But then I think when they get here, they're on
40:59
Speaker 22: the same page pretty much instantaneously, And you can't say
41:02
Speaker 22: that for a lot of other managers. I think a
41:04
Speaker 22: lot of other people try and you know, go with
41:06
Speaker 22: different agendas or try and playcate to the players, and
41:09
Speaker 22: that can only last so long.
41:11
Speaker 7: PJ is who he is, and he is very, very consistent.
41:14
Speaker 22: He has been the same guy that I know him
41:16
Speaker 22: since when we were in essentially a made up league
41:18
Speaker 22: during COVID to Atlantic League and everything in between. So
41:23
Speaker 22: he's you know, he's had tremendous success in this league.
41:25
Speaker 22: He had great successes one year in the Frontier League.
41:28
Speaker 22: Last year, I mean he made it to the playoffs.
41:29
Speaker 22: Is for one and only year as a manager in
41:31
Speaker 22: the Frontier League. So he really brings just a very
41:34
Speaker 22: very confident aura to the entire to the entire place.
41:38
Speaker 22: And you know, the other thing that I think I love,
41:40
Speaker 22: and I think that our fans respect, is that he's
41:43
Speaker 22: so even keeled that he doesn't go ballistic. He doesn't,
41:47
Speaker 22: you know, try and do some corny prescripted I'm gonna
41:51
Speaker 22: get tossed and hopefully someone gets it on John Boyd
41:53
Speaker 22: Media or something like he is very, very professional. He's
41:56
Speaker 22: just very even keeled, and that that trend to the
42:00
Speaker 22: clubhouse and to the dugout tremendously.
42:03
Speaker 4: Again, guys, the championship begins tomorrow night Go Ballpark six
42:07
Speaker 4: thirty five, correct, and also Wednesday night, so you get
42:10
Speaker 4: two here and then you'll go on the road after that.
42:12
Speaker 4: How cool would it be if the Dirty Birds were
42:15
Speaker 4: to win the championship? I mean we I mean, it's
42:18
Speaker 4: it's something that I think the Charleston would really really
42:21
Speaker 4: get all excited. But they've been excited all season with
42:23
Speaker 4: this team.
42:24
Speaker 22: Dave, I moved here five days before the Christmas Parade
42:27
Speaker 22: in twenty twenty two and we went to that and
42:29
Speaker 22: I've been thinking about it since then of having the
42:32
Speaker 22: trophy at that parade. So I think it would be
42:35
Speaker 22: absolutely amazing. I think we've got a heck of a
42:37
Speaker 22: great shot. And I love what we're doing, you know,
42:40
Speaker 22: and everything with the twelve and undred for kids, twelve
42:43
Speaker 22: and hundred free tickets, for just doing everything we can
42:46
Speaker 22: to get the community engaged.
42:48
Speaker 7: I think it's just it's really really exciting, and.
42:50
Speaker 4: It's one of the great things I like about this
42:52
Speaker 4: ownership group, Andy, is the fact that you folks do
42:54
Speaker 4: give so much back to the community. I mean even
42:57
Speaker 4: during the off season, you're out doing the stuff. Of
42:59
Speaker 4: course we'll have the Slango Law light the night over
43:01
Speaker 4: to Ballpark two. That's something that you don't necessarily have
43:04
Speaker 4: to do, but you've agreed to do it again. It's
43:06
Speaker 4: going to be bigger and better than ever. So even
43:08
Speaker 4: though the players aren't around, then this ownership group is
43:11
Speaker 4: really really involved in the community with things throughout the year.
43:14
Speaker 4: It's very real to us.
43:15
Speaker 22: And you know, the thing that was funny is that,
43:17
Speaker 22: of course I was happy to be in Gastonia winning
43:19
Speaker 22: the Southern Division Saturday, but we were the sponsor of
43:22
Speaker 22: two different community events that day, so was bummed that
43:25
Speaker 22: I wasn't personally here. But we had Dustier mascot there,
43:28
Speaker 22: we had representation. So yes, it is as exciting and
43:32
Speaker 22: as amazing it is on the field. I mean, we
43:34
Speaker 22: want to be the best we can be three hundred
43:36
Speaker 22: and sixty five days a year.
43:37
Speaker 4: And the Jill remind folks where they could watch the
43:39
Speaker 4: game if they can't make it to the ballpark.
43:41
Speaker 9: If you can't make it to the ballpark, you can
43:42
Speaker 9: go to Flow baseball dot com register there or get
43:45
Speaker 9: your tickets at Dirty Birds Baseball dot com. And remember
43:48
Speaker 9: this is their first Championship Series appearance since two thousand
43:51
Speaker 9: and eight. We are going for our first league title
43:53
Speaker 9: since nineteen.
43:54
Speaker 4: Ninety nineteen ninety, Jill, I talked about you weren't born.
43:57
Speaker 7: I was not born yet.
43:58
Speaker 4: Were you born in nineteen ninetyen?
44:00
Speaker 3: Maybe?
44:01
Speaker 4: I certainly all right, I was in college at the time.
44:05
Speaker 4: All right, guys, we'll see you at the ballpark tomorrow night.
44:07
Speaker 4: And Jill, I guess I'm gonna have to have you
44:09
Speaker 4: back tomorrow, right? Is that the way this is? Because
44:11
Speaker 4: you or somebody will be here to talk about the
44:13
Speaker 4: Dirty Birds tomorrow. Jill and Andy, I appreciate you guys

Speaker 4: Journey towards Better Health Today, Texas. Happy birthday, Dave. We
46:54
Speaker 4: enjoy your radio program each morn to keep up your
46:56
Speaker 4: great work.
46:56
Speaker 2: Well.
46:56
Speaker 4: Thank you very much. I do appreciate that I have
46:59
Speaker 4: fun with it. That's the bottom line. I have fun,
47:01
Speaker 4: tex says Dave. Why hasn't anyone asked Graven to address
47:04
Speaker 4: why Joe Biden led a Biden Cabinet meeting and while
47:07
Speaker 4: her signature is now included on White House stationary, she
47:10
Speaker 4: is not an elected official. We are living Woodrow and
47:13
Speaker 4: Edith Wilson reincarnate, says a text Texas, Dave, thank you
47:19
Speaker 4: again for helping get the Kanawha County Public Safety radio
47:21
Speaker 4: feedback online. Much appreciate it. I didn't do anything there.
47:24
Speaker 4: All I did was basically when we started getting text
47:26
Speaker 4: that it wasn't appearing on certain platforms. I just was
47:29
Speaker 4: kind of the conduit between the Texter and Johnny Rutherford,
47:32
Speaker 4: and apparently things seemed to be back up and operating
47:36
Speaker 4: as they should, so I didn't really do anything. I
47:38
Speaker 4: just kind of provided the provided the forum. I guess
47:41
Speaker 4: we have spent a great deal of time over the
47:45
Speaker 4: last few weeks, not only on this show but also
47:48
Speaker 4: on other media outlets talking about the threats to schools
47:53
Speaker 4: and this story from Friday that emerge is just a
47:56
Speaker 4: little bit different and story and picks of the perp
47:59
Speaker 4: are posted at wv metronews dot com courtesy of Aaron Parker.
48:03
Speaker 4: So this dude named James Wilson, he was fifty years
48:06
Speaker 4: old of Miami, the one here, not the one in Florida,
48:09
Speaker 4: decided to go squirrel hunting next to Sharon Dawes Elementary
48:13
Speaker 4: School in Cabin Creek. This all happened Friday. Maintenance workers
48:17
Speaker 4: reported here in gunfire around seven forty five Friday morning,
48:21
Speaker 4: seventeen shotgun shells were found on the roof of the school. Now,
48:26
Speaker 4: apparently the guy thought it might be a good idea
48:28
Speaker 4: to go hunting next to a grade school. Not so much.
48:32
Speaker 4: He was arrested in charge with hunting without a license,
48:34
Speaker 4: I legal possession of wildlife and negligent shooting. Kids got
48:39
Speaker 4: the day off because of it, and mister Wilson became
48:41
Speaker 4: a resident of South Central Regional Jail. And I was
48:43
Speaker 4: thinking about this this morning, what a difference a few
48:47
Speaker 4: decades makes, because again since my birthday, I can do this.
48:51
Speaker 4: When I was young, but in all seriousness, growing up
48:55
Speaker 4: in a rural area as I did, it was not
48:58
Speaker 4: uncommon in when I was in elementary school of the
49:01
Speaker 4: nineteen seventies for kids to bring guns to school have
49:05
Speaker 4: them in their locker because their parents knew they were
49:08
Speaker 4: going squirrel hunting or whatever after school. And we had
49:12
Speaker 4: the lockers in the classrooms, and I can literally remember
49:16
Speaker 4: watching kids bring guns to school and placing them in
49:20
Speaker 4: the locker. You know, maybe it was a little bit different,
49:22
Speaker 4: you know, back then, growing up in a rural area.
49:24
Speaker 4: But you can't do that today for obvious reasons. I
49:26
Speaker 4: get it, but it just kind of struck me, you know,
49:28
Speaker 4: the contrast between what a difference that forty or so
49:32
Speaker 4: years make, well, fifty years or so makes. Big Piggy

Speaker 4: three five five zero zero eight Texas Dave, let's talk
49:44
Speaker 4: about important things the Cowboys coaching staff, front office and
49:47
Speaker 4: owner needs changing. Well, I'll say this about my Cowboys.
49:50
Speaker 4: You know, on our birthday weekend yesterday, they got down
49:54
Speaker 4: to a large margin to Baltimore twenty eight to six,
49:57
Speaker 4: and there in the fourth quarter they mounted a comeback. Unfortunately,
50:00
Speaker 4: though the clock is undefeated, and had they had that
50:04
Speaker 4: fire early on that they had toward the end of
50:06
Speaker 4: the game. I mean Dak was just picking the Raven's
50:09
Speaker 4: defensive part. Unfortunately he waited till there was five minutes
50:12
Speaker 4: left in the game to start that, and the defense
50:14
Speaker 4: for Dallas came alive too. So we got some problems
50:18
Speaker 4: in Big d for sure. What about the I don't
50:19
Speaker 4: want to turn it into a sports show. What about
50:21
Speaker 4: the Reds firing David Bell their manager with five days
50:24
Speaker 4: left in the season. I mean the Rads were officially
50:27
Speaker 4: eliminated from the playoffs like last week or so, why
50:31
Speaker 4: with five days left in the season do you walk
50:33
Speaker 4: at this point? Jeff said this morning on the Morning
50:36
Speaker 4: News could have been one of those things where they
50:38
Speaker 4: said we're going to fire you at the end of
50:39
Speaker 4: the season, and he said, you know what, I've already
50:41
Speaker 4: started packing. I've already got my stuff out the door.
50:44
Speaker 4: I don't know what happened there, but anyway, David Bell
50:46
Speaker 4: is out in Cincinnati. So should Governor Jim Justice have
50:50
Speaker 4: a debate against Glenn Elliott. Hoppy did a poll on
50:53
Speaker 4: Twitter or ax now that said yes he should. Justice,
50:57
Speaker 4: of course, the Republican nominee for Senate currently held by
51:00
Speaker 4: Mansion Glenn Elliott, the Democrat nominee. Glenn was on the
51:04
Speaker 4: show actually last week and I asked him about the debate,
51:07
Speaker 4: and he again challenged Jim Justice, saying, and this was
51:11
Speaker 4: actually funny, he said, and I'm kind of paraphrasing here.
51:14
Speaker 4: He can even bring his dog if he wants, if
51:16
Speaker 4: I can bring mine. Now, for his part, the governor
51:20
Speaker 4: is saying no to a debate, and he says the
51:23
Speaker 4: race is already over. And I'll be honest with you,
51:27
Speaker 4: I'm not so sure the governor should debate Elliott. He's
51:30
Speaker 4: already way ahead in the polls, and to be honest,
51:32
Speaker 4: it's going to be darn near impossible for a Democrat
51:35
Speaker 4: to win anything in this state. And that's not meant
51:38
Speaker 4: as a disrespect toward Glenn Elliott, but it's just where
51:41
Speaker 4: we are right now. And the same goes for Honeyton
51:44
Speaker 4: Mayor Steve Williams and his battle for governor against a G.
51:48
Speaker 4: Patrick Morrissey. Steve Williams taking a very interesting stance though
51:52
Speaker 4: in both Hopey and I talked about this last week.
51:55
Speaker 4: Steve Williams has come out in favor of recreational cannabis
51:59
Speaker 4: and he'd like to have a foot on the ballot. Well,
52:02
Speaker 4: the makeup of the legislator. Now that's not gonna happen,
52:04
Speaker 4: but you can. My grandma used to say, Ryan, you
52:06
Speaker 4: can want in one hand and you know what in
52:08
Speaker 4: the other one. See which one gets filled up quicker.
52:10
Speaker 4: It's uh, grandma logic, all right, gotta go. Thanks to
52:14
Speaker 4: doctor Marty Roth, University of Charleston for being on the
52:16
Speaker 4: show today, Andy and Jill from the Dirty Birds and
52:19
Speaker 4: the Tory and Marjorie from the Kenag Garden Club as well.
52:23
Speaker 4: Coming up tomorrow, we're gonna talk some home security with
52:26
