- 0:00Hello and welcome back to the Retail podcast live from NRF.
- 0:04This time Rob Gough from Salesforce General Manager of
- 0:09Retail. Have I?
- 0:09Got that right you got there. Honestly, you're doing.
- 0:12Great. Really beads of swing coming
- 0:14down my hands. I actually saw Rob dazzling the
- 0:16audience about your new capabilities.
- 0:20And so for those who don't know, let's take a step back for it.
- 0:24Let's talk about you for like the first bit and then let's
- 0:26talk about Salesforce in terms of thing.
- 0:28So just tell us a little bit about you, how you got here,
- 0:31your journey through Salesforce, how long have you been at
- 0:33Salesforce? Yeah.
- 0:34So again, Rob Garf, GM for retail here at Salesforce.
- 0:38I've been here a total of 13 years.
- 0:39That's actually been a combination of coming in through
- 0:42the acquisition of Demandware, which is now Commerce Cloud.
- 0:45And I am now, like I said, oversee retail and consumer
- 0:49goods on the product side. So we're building products and
- 0:51solutions to bring them to market.
- 0:53The intent is recognising that consumers traverse nine
- 0:56different touch points in any given shopping journey.
- 0:59We're trying to create a unified platform to really personalise
- 1:02and remove that friction across all of those touch points.
- 1:05Yeah, I mean, when I was at your Chicago event, I was blown away
- 1:09how you are embedding AI into like every single module as you
- 1:14go. And so you're responsible for
- 1:16that. Yeah, Mark, in terms of bringing
- 1:18that to market for retail and it sounds like you're at
- 1:21Connections, it's always that happens in the fall and spring,
- 1:24excuse me. And yeah, you know, it's
- 1:26interesting. Everybody's coming at AI from a
- 1:28different angle. At Salesforce, of course, we put
- 1:31data in the middle. We put trust in the middle.
- 1:33But most importantly, what I'm hearing from our retail
- 1:35customers is they don't want another user interface to do
- 1:39their job. Our research at Salesforce has
- 1:41shown that store associates on average have to log into 12
- 1:45different systems on a daily basis.
- 1:47That's just untenable. That really doesn't allow for
- 1:50more productivity or customer and consumer engagement.
- 1:54So we make AI right in the flow of work.
- 1:58So for us marketing across service and commerce.
- 2:01Wow. OK.
- 2:02So so I I guess the whole the outcomes that you're creating
- 2:06for retailers, you're allowing them to get to things a lot.
- 2:10I mean, customisation, for example, is one of the outcomes
- 2:13you focus on. Yeah.
- 2:14I mean, if you think about the outcome, and I like how you're
- 2:16framing that up, is ultimately removing the friction, right,
- 2:20between inspiration and purchase through a frictionless and
- 2:25personalised experience across all of those different channels,
- 2:29both in store and online. And with AI, we're doing that by
- 2:33embedding it right in the flow of work.
- 2:35Yeah. And what I think is also super,
- 2:37super interesting is that I talked to a lot of customers
- 2:41about a, I mean hundreds of customers since the about 12
- 2:44months at Generative AI came on to the map.
- 2:47And some are talking about low end or I should say bottom line
- 2:51improvement for efficiency and productivity.
- 2:53Yeah, others are talking about top line growth.
- 2:55But the one thing in common is the customer and the customer
- 2:59experience. And also, by the way, I'm often
- 3:01corrected, it's also about the employee.
- 3:04Yeah, it's very ants ultimately thinking about what problems
- 3:07we're solving on their behalf and not trying to create these
- 3:10big shiny objects, but rather solve practical problems for
- 3:15either the customer or the employee.
- 3:18OK. There's a couple of areas that I
- 3:20want to go in Yeti, for example, or massive Yep Ban.
- 3:24It's incredible how many talks I've been at where they've used
- 3:27Yeti as the store of the future. Yeah.
- 3:29In terms of blending all of these experiences, yes,
- 3:32Salesforce at the heart of Yeti, that's right.
- 3:34In terms of the e-commerce transformation, yeah, you just
- 3:37take for those who don't know about Yeti and what you're
- 3:39doing, can you just tell us about you know the outcomes
- 3:42there? Yeah, absolutely.
- 3:43I mean you know them through tumblers and you're seeing them
- 3:46through the different coolers they have really innovating and
- 3:49disrupting the market yet he is one of my favourite brands,
- 3:52personally one of the older demand.
- 3:54We're now Commerce Cloud customers, so holds a very near
- 3:57and dear place in my heart. And yeah, what they're looking
- 4:00at when they went from just going wholesale through the
- 4:03brick and mortar retail locations direct to consumer,
- 4:06they came to Salesforce and they said how do we better understand
- 4:10who our consumer is. Yeah, so we start to connect the
- 4:13dots in terms of their profile, their preferences, their
- 4:16shopping behaviour, what service queries they have, how loyal
- 4:19they are. Yeah, they help personalise that
- 4:21experience. And it's not like you go out
- 4:24every week like in a grocery store to buy a new Tumblr, but
- 4:28rather they need to think about how do we proactively trigger
- 4:32something to inspire the consumer to buy something you.
- 4:36Yeah. And in order to do that, they
- 4:37are creating a 360° view of that consumer in activating it.
- 4:41Yeah. Through marketing.
- 4:43Yep. Through commerce.
- 4:44Yeah. And through service.
- 4:45So again, that consumer is having a consistent experience.
- 4:49They're being treated and served as they should as a loyal
- 4:53customer. It it does feel that that's the
- 4:54blueprint of the future if I'm honest.
- 4:56From listening to all the talks about how yetis creating
- 4:59physical, incorporating digital and then backing them off to
- 5:03each other, right? So the website refers to the
- 5:05store, store refers to the website and you and you've got
- 5:08this thing. Final thoughts.
- 5:10Yeah, I obviously AI massive theme.
- 5:13Yeah. What I'm really curious of the
- 5:15number one thing customers, you must have met so many customers,
- 5:17what's top of mind for them? What's the one thing they
- 5:20they're being asking you about? Well, The thing is, I'm really
- 5:22encouraged about the positive mindset.
- 5:25I mean, NRF here, there's so much energy.
- 5:27We feel like we're back and even above where we were before the
- 5:30pandemic. And retail executives, I'm
- 5:33talking about are focused on growth.
- 5:35They're focused on increasing the share of wallet.
- 5:38Yeah. And that might be beyond the
- 5:39categories of the products or the services they have provided
- 5:42in the past. That's why you're hearing about
- 5:44retail media. That's why you're hearing about
- 5:45retail health, retail logistics and even more thinking about,
- 5:49again, beyond the kind of constraints they've been in the
- 5:53past. And the way they're going to do
- 5:55that is better understand the consumer and monetize loyal
- 5:59shoppers to find new and different ways to serve them
- 6:02better. And the way ultimately that
- 6:04comes down to we talk about AI. Yeah, right.
- 6:06How many times have you heard AI this week?
- 6:08It's not. Inside, I just climbed 1000.
- 6:10It's, it's an AI revolution. But it's as much of A data
- 6:14revolution. It's a skills revolution, it's
- 6:17an organisational revolution, it's a trust revolution.
- 6:21And most importantly, it's a customer experience revolution.
- 6:24And so you wrap all that together and it's really a
- 6:27transformation that I have never experienced in my time in
- 6:31retail. It's fundamentally going to
- 6:32change the way we're interacting with our consumers.
- 6:37Yeah. Our suppliers, our employees and
- 6:39ultimately driving loyalty and growing really sustainable
- 6:43relationships. I I love that.
- 6:45Can I ask one more question please?
- 6:46OK. Salesforce, you have so many
- 6:49different components. Yeah so many different products,
- 6:51so many different entities. I a lot of the community may not
- 6:55be or the the effects may not be on the Salesforce journey.
- 6:58Sure, if I'm thinking about this world and I'm either re
- 7:02platforming, I understand what I've built doesn't work.
- 7:05Where do I start? It's the one thing where if I'm
- 7:07turning up to talk to Salesforce, how do I get the
- 7:10maximum value? What?
- 7:11Where do I start? Yeah, it's a great question.
- 7:13It's a question that I get, I guess if I frame this up a
- 7:16little bit, retailers are engaging with consumers like I
- 7:21said across nine different touch points in any given shopping
- 7:24journey. Consumer electronics have
- 7:25probably on the higher end, if you're a fast moving consumer
- 7:28goods like convenience store, you're at the lower end of that.
- 7:30But my point is consumers are traversing online and offline to
- 7:33ultimately buy what they want to get the service they need.
- 7:36And so what's happening though and the retailer side, retailers
- 7:39according to our research that Salesforce have to manage 44
- 7:43different systems could actually manage that engagement.
- 7:46That doesn't even account for the back office.
- 7:49That's just consumer engagement. Yeah, you can't do that
- 7:52efficiently. You can't do that effectively.
- 7:54Yeah. So you think about, you think
- 7:56about Salesforce of course at the highest level we are the
- 8:00number one AR, we are the number one AI CRM, period, full stop.
- 8:07What does that mean for retail? We infuse data.
- 8:10We infuse AI across the entire buying journey across all of
- 8:15those touch points, marketing, service, commerce.
- 8:19We layer on Tableau for analytics.
- 8:22You have Mulesoft to integrate all those disparate systems and
- 8:26Slack to bring productivity and collaboration to the hands of
- 8:29the frontline and headquarter workers.
- 8:32That's fantastic. Well, thank you so much.
- 8:34We can carry on. I know they're queuing up to
- 8:36take you away, so I really appreciate.
- 8:37Absolutely. My pleasure.
- 8:38Thank you very much. Have a good day.
