- 0:25and let's integrate this. Hey, welcome to the
- 0:29Integrate This EdTech podcast. I'm David Werner.
- 0:31I'm joined by Kimmy Fink and Dana Truby of BBC
- 0:34Learning Hub. Welcome to our podcast. We're happy
- 0:37to have you join us. Thank you. And so we want
- 0:40to kick things off here a little bit and just
- 0:41talk about first and foremost, we are at ISTE.
- 0:43What does BBC Learning Hub have going on at ISTE?
- 0:47Well this is our second year. We launched last
- 0:50year at ISTE and so we're really glad to be back
- 0:52this year. And this year we have crazy Bluey
- 0:55giveaways because it's a big year for Bluey with
- 0:57the movie coming out and BBC is the one who actually
- 1:02licensed it to Disney and we have incredible
- 1:06learning resources all around Bluey. We also,
- 1:11so that's one of our main things, so everyone
- 1:13keeps coming to the booth to have their picture
- 1:15taken with Bluey and Bingo. We're also really
- 1:19proud to share all of the new learning resources
- 1:22we've developed this year. Yeah, and we like
- 1:25to get into those a little bit. So if a parent
- 1:27or an educator goes to BBC Learning Hub, what
- 1:29can they expect to find once they're in there?
- 1:31Well, the thing they keep being really surprised
- 1:33to find is that all of the resources are free.
- 1:36and there's very little that you have to actually
- 1:38log in for. You log in when you want to download,
- 1:41but all of our videos, which are clips from landmark
- 1:44BBC programs like Planet Earth... and Bluey and
- 1:49so many other things are all free and all packed
- 1:52with learning resources around them. There's
- 1:55lots of printables. There's articles that are
- 1:57leveled for different reading levels. There are
- 1:59virtual field trips. There's so much you can
- 2:02do both at home and at school, and it's all ad
- 2:05-free. Yeah, and I saw that. And we'll get into
- 2:07some of the content and things, but I do need
- 2:09to talk, Kimmy, first about the Bluey aspect,
- 2:13because they're... Bluey is obviously a part
- 2:15of that, right, part of BBC, but I just have
- 2:17to say one of the things my daughter, Isla, she,
- 2:21we were on the BBC Learning Hub and the first
- 2:22thing I see is the 50 things to do during the
- 2:25summer, right? So obviously I printed that out
- 2:27for her and she's checking them off here, you
- 2:29know, now that summer's going on. So can you
- 2:32talk a little bit to like the Bluey content and
- 2:34things like that that are on there? Well, I'm
- 2:36so delighted that you've, that you found that
- 2:38we're so proud to be hosting so much Bluey content.
- 2:42We are... the only place where you can get licensed
- 2:46Bluey lessons that have been created. with Ludo,
- 2:53which is Ludo Studios who created Bluey. So you
- 2:55know that what you're getting is in the voice
- 2:58of Bluey. It's in line with all of the things
- 3:01that you and your children love about Bluey.
- 3:04So we are home to 15 social and emotional learning
- 3:07lessons, and each of those lessons is associated
- 3:10with an episode of Bluey that teaches some kind
- 3:13of important life skills. So you might be watching,
- 3:16you might watch Yoga Ball, that episode, and
- 3:20learning how to speak. up and to use your voice
- 3:22and we have activities that were developed by
- 3:25early educators to help students build those
- 3:27build those skills so we have all of those and
- 3:30then we also have several kind of standalone
- 3:32worksheets which is what you found with the things
- 3:34to do this summer so there's coloring sheets
- 3:36there's all about me type activities there's
- 3:39really so much that's available and useful for
- 3:42teachers and again it's it's free. Yeah, and
- 3:46I want to talk a little bit too about the so
- 3:48there's a bunch of content on there and one of
- 3:49the things I notice also is that you can filter
- 3:51the content right so you can you can click on
- 3:54what grade level they're in or age group that
- 3:56they're in and so what is it what makes how do
- 3:59you make decisions around what goes into the
- 4:01learning hub? Well, we're expanding the content
- 4:06all the time. Right now we have a lot of rich
- 4:11social studies and science content. In the near
- 4:16future we're adding math and literacy and English.
- 4:20We do have a framework of what the core... areas
- 4:27are for us and that's our global knowledge framework
- 4:29and those are five key areas that are of the
- 4:32largest importance to our hub and that's media
- 4:35literacy, environment and sustainability not
- 4:38surprisingly, global citizenship so that's everything
- 4:41about learning to be a citizen of the world.
- 4:46financial literacy, and what am I missing? Digital
- 4:48literacy. Which is of course safety online but
- 4:52more than that also just becoming an active user
- 4:55of technology in a smart way. We often think
- 5:01that kids are naturally digital literate and
- 5:05they're actually not. They need to learn those
- 5:08skills. in an effective way. So those are areas
- 5:12that we're looking to develop and then we're
- 5:13also looking at what is the great content that
- 5:17the BBC has that people are asking us for and
- 5:20we have teachers and parents come up to us and
- 5:23say, hey I love this particular show and we will
- 5:26actually go and source that show and add it.
- 5:29That happened today even. Yeah, so and the other
- 5:34thing I noticed on there too is well there's
- 5:35a variety of content, but I noticed the dinosaur
- 5:37virtual tour. Yeah. So with that one thing that
- 5:42stood out to me or I thought about with that
- 5:44is we work with a lot of rural schools and so
- 5:47field trips might be a little bit harder to come
- 5:48by or do them frequently or things like that.
- 5:50So is that something that you take into account
- 5:53for those virtual field trips or how does the
- 5:56virtual field trips all get designed and brought
- 5:58to BBC Learning? We're so excited about those
- 6:01and we have a whole slate of them planned for
- 6:04this year. There's a couple reasons, certainly
- 6:06for who gets to visit a dig site. Even if you
- 6:10are a place that gets to, you don't get to visit
- 6:12a dig site. But it also makes it really easy
- 6:17for teachers if the kids can navigate it themselves,
- 6:20if they can navigate through the content. So
- 6:23we're looking at making rich. learning environments
- 6:26where kids can click around and click on different
- 6:30locations or within the picture. In this case,
- 6:33it's a map of the world and it shows you five
- 6:36different dig sites and the dinosaurs that were
- 6:38found there. And then we also have quizzes and
- 6:41other activities and so kids can... can navigate
- 6:44it on their own and it's discovery, what'll be
- 6:47there behind that. But we're planning one for
- 6:50Blue Planet 3, for Under the Ocean, and several
- 6:54others, one on nocturnal animals, one on gardens,
- 6:58like all different kinds of ones that we're planning
- 7:00for this year. Okay, yeah, so it's a little inside
- 7:02scoop on what's coming out, some of those. So
- 7:05then the other thing I wanted to get into a little
- 7:07bit is the media literacy side, and it's news
- 7:12bites. So news bites, BBC news bites, we've known
- 7:16for a while media literacy is extremely important.
- 7:19Why in your opinion is it so important right
- 7:21now? We've developed news bites and then we're
- 7:29planning to continue to expand it and right now
- 7:31it's a daily international news story that's
- 7:35appropriate for kids. We want We want to first
- 7:39be a trusted source for news for kids and for
- 7:43adults. And then we also want to develop a news
- 7:47habit with kids where, oh, I feel comfortable
- 7:51watching the news. I know how this works. I understand
- 7:54news stories. I know how to listen for what's
- 7:57important. So right now we have fun sort of.
- 8:00They're comprehension questions, but they're
- 8:02not examy. They're meant to be playful and to
- 8:05spark curiosity. And so the idea is teachers
- 8:08can watch, can put it on as a daily starter or
- 8:12after recess and be like, here's five minutes,
- 8:16let's learn something about the world, let's
- 8:19do the questions. And then we're about to, for
- 8:22back to school, gamify it a little so that they
- 8:25can see their streaks, so they can see. Oh, did
- 8:28they do really well on this? Did they do better
- 8:30than 76 % or 50 %? What are other people guessing?
- 8:34So that they can see that a little and then we're
- 8:36adding, making them more puzzle -like so that
- 8:40they're not just straight questions. And our
- 8:43hope is to build up that daily relationship to
- 8:48learning about the world. Great, and one of the
- 8:51things too, it's four, six through eight currently.
- 8:55Is that going to expand at all? Will it expand
- 8:58to other grade levels or anything? We are aiming
- 9:00it at 6 through 8. We feel that it definitely
- 9:02still works for high school. And as we develop,
- 9:08we're going to be doing more and more media literacy
- 9:10content. We have a unit coming out for media
- 9:14literacy for high school this year. Younger news
- 9:18is hard. That'll take us a while to get to, I
- 9:21think. Sure. Because you'd need to. go at an
- 9:25entirely different pace. But right now, we aim
- 9:29at middle school and feel that it can be used
- 9:32in high school as well. OK. And then there's
- 9:35the newsroom connection, too. How is that different?
- 9:39unique about that newsroom portion of the website?
- 9:42The News Bites is really the daily news story.
- 9:44The newsroom is all of our news connection, news
- 9:48assets. So that includes science news, that includes
- 9:52news for fun, as well as all the resources that
- 9:55we're developing for teachers around teaching
- 9:58the news. So we have a whole lesson series there.
- 10:02We've got different kinds of worksheets that
- 10:04you can use for comprehension or for finding
- 10:07the main idea for. extrapolating and and and
- 10:11learning like well what's being said here whose
- 10:14point of view is this is there evidence like
- 10:17all of that kind of smart thinking that we want
- 10:20them to do when they're dealing with non -fiction
- 10:22okay great and the other thing we have to get
- 10:25into too is the planet earth side because as
- 10:28you as you scroll through there and you look
- 10:29at different content pieces you can connect to
- 10:32that so you talk a little bit about how BBC's
- 10:35Planet Earth is brought into the curriculum and
- 10:38the different content that's in there. So BBC
- 10:40just celebrated a couple of really important
- 10:42anniversaries this year. So this was actually
- 10:44the 20th anniversary of Planet Earth from its
- 10:47debut and then Sir David Attenborough, who of
- 10:49course is our beloved documentarian, naturalist,
- 10:53conservationist, amazing, celebrated his 100th
- 10:55birthday. So we said we have got to do something
- 10:58special and we have a ton of his content. So
- 11:02we have clips from planet Earth, frozen planet,
- 11:05blue planet. And so what we decided to do for
- 11:08this particular collection and anniversary and
- 11:10also looping in Earth Day was to take the, we
- 11:14worked with the BBC Earth team and we identified
- 11:15the eight most popular clips from planet Earth
- 11:19and we created a passport. And these clips are.
- 11:22pretty amazing you've probably seen one of them
- 11:24there's one where it's the baby iguanas trying
- 11:27to get to the ocean and they're being chased
- 11:29by racer snakes it's quite exciting and quite
- 11:32terrifying but we have these really exciting
- 11:35clips um but we didn't want you know kids to
- 11:38just be passive you know observers so we created
- 11:40this passport and we put all of those locations
- 11:43on a map and you go through this passport and
- 11:45you you know go at stop one and you watch the
- 11:48video and you're responding to questions and
- 11:50you're illustrating and you go through all eight
- 11:52of those and again they can do that pretty much
- 11:54guided on their own which is what Dana was referring
- 11:56to with our virtual field trips and then at the
- 11:58end there's a quiz that they can do take to check
- 12:01for understanding. We feel very fortunate to
- 12:04have some incredible IP on our site, and it's
- 12:08so engaging and valuable for students. Yeah,
- 12:11and I can recognize that voice anywhere, honestly.
- 12:13I remember getting like the Blu -ray version
- 12:15of Planet Earth when it first came out. Yeah,
- 12:18so as far as the communications and things that
- 12:22you're doing with BBC, you have the newsletter.
- 12:24What can folks expect if they sign up for the
- 12:26newsletter to get some of the content or information
- 12:29about the content in there? So we actually have
- 12:31two newsletters. We have a primary and a secondary,
- 12:34so for educators we have that. We're going to
- 12:38expand to a parent family newsletter as well.
- 12:41That comes out weekly and you can sign up for
- 12:44any and all. And we share our latest content,
- 12:48picks for the season or for time of year. It's
- 12:52short and quick and easy to click through. We're
- 12:56also on We are also on Instagram and Facebook,
- 13:02and we're expanding to LinkedIn. We're expanding
- 13:04to YouTube. Awesome. So another question I want
- 13:08to ask you is, obviously, we have a lot of educators
- 13:10here. And so they're thinking about like, OK,
- 13:12I want to use BBC Learning in the classroom.
- 13:15Is there any stories or things that you can talk
- 13:17about that are related to examples of classroom
- 13:20use that you've seen or been inspired by? I was
- 13:24thinking about, so I was a classroom teacher
- 13:25for 13 years and at the elementary level and
- 13:28I was thinking about a time when we were studying
- 13:32food chains and my students were saying, we were
- 13:35talking about beluga whales and they're like,
- 13:37well, what hunts a beluga whale? And I said,
- 13:40well, polar bears. And they looked at me like,
- 13:43are you joking? Like that is unbelievable. It
- 13:46was like the mind blown emoji, you know? And
- 13:48so the idea that I now work for a place that
- 13:51can put out Super high quality amazing video
- 13:54that cannot just they're not just taking it from
- 13:56me the teacher right saying oh Well, I just learned
- 13:58that from a teacher. They can actually see it
- 14:00is so powerful So I love that we get to put out
- 14:03these things that make things real for kids in
- 14:07a way that you can't do you know be a Other other
- 14:11media. Yeah, and so one of the things I wanted
- 14:15to just wrap up with is you kind of got into
- 14:17this a little bit Dana, but the the things that
- 14:20you have coming up. So there's new virtual tours
- 14:22and things coming out. What do you want to highlight
- 14:24or what are you kind of talking about in the
- 14:26vendor hall about the things that you have coming
- 14:28for BBC in the next year or so? A lot of big
- 14:33highlights. Let's do five. We've got A huge unit
- 14:38on Blue Planet, which is all about the ocean,
- 14:41when Blue Planet 3 launches in January. We are
- 14:46launching a huge collection of math and English
- 14:49content that we don't currently have, that are
- 14:52all videos that were designed for the classroom.
- 14:54We're super excited about that. We're going to
- 14:58add reading passages for all of our video because
- 15:01we feel that while watching and connecting and
- 15:04seeing the real is important, they still always
- 15:06need that. literacy content. I think science
- 15:09teachers are going to be really excited that
- 15:11we are doing a science dictionary so like when
- 15:16you take a term like lava we are going to have
- 15:19a video short video clip for that or for condensation
- 15:23or so we are we are not just doing longer clips
- 15:26but we are when they need that exact term we
- 15:30are going to come out with a clip of amazing
- 15:33BBC Earth content that goes along with that.
- 15:36What am I missing? Evolution. Evolution. It's
- 15:39a new show that's launching this summer that
- 15:42we are creating a virtual exploration around
- 15:47that we think is really exciting for high school.
- 15:50And that will be live by August. Awesome. Well,
- 15:55great. So, guests that are watching, or if you're
- 15:58watching, make sure that you check out BBC Learning
- 16:01Hub. free content they have on their great stuff.
