- 0:04Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome to the Overlain Journal podcast. I'm your
- 0:07Speaker 1: host Matt Scott when I'm with my buddy Scott Brady here,
- 0:11Speaker 1: and we've got Brad from Trail Recon and then his
- 0:14Speaker 1: lovely doggie Luna is also on the floor who's going
- 0:16Speaker 1: to be occasionally piping in and joining us.
- 0:19Speaker 2: So we're so excited. I love having dogs on the show.
- 0:22Speaker 1: We're so excited that you hear man, Brad has had
- 0:25Speaker 1: an illustrious career in the Navy and then has moved
- 0:30Speaker 1: on to really creating this amazing content in the technical
- 0:33Speaker 1: four whel drive world now kind of moving into you know,
- 0:37Speaker 1: in your own words, you're camping more, but you're doing
- 0:39Speaker 1: it with your own flair, and you're kind of mixing this,
- 0:41Speaker 1: you know, I'll say, like more traditional four wheel drive
- 0:44Speaker 1: with the camping and the overlanding. I mean, you've got
- 0:46Speaker 1: a sprinter, you've got a gladiator, you've got jeeps, You've
- 0:49Speaker 1: got all this kind of stuff. And we're just so
- 0:51Speaker 1: stoked as talk trucks and talk places to go.
- 0:53Speaker 3: I'm always about talking trucks, and I'm excited to be
- 0:55Speaker 3: here with you guys because I've been listening to you
- 0:57Speaker 3: guys for a long time, so I'm honored to be here,
- 0:58Speaker 3: so I appreciate it.
- 1:00Speaker 2: H Scott here, I just wanted to take a minute
- 1:03Speaker 2: to talk a little bit about expedition portal dot com.
- 1:07Speaker 2: Expedition portal dot com is our website and it's also
- 1:11Speaker 2: our community forum. We are celebrating twenty years of expedition
- 1:15Speaker 2: portal dot com this year in twenty twenty five, and
- 1:19Speaker 2: there are nearly three hundred thousand members on the community
- 1:23Speaker 2: forum that talk about incredibly diverse topics all around the world,
- 1:27Speaker 2: unique vehicles, things like land cruisers and land rovers, and
- 1:32Speaker 2: what to do at the border with Ethiopia and Africa,
- 1:35Speaker 2: all the way to some of the favorite campsites and
- 1:38Speaker 2: adventure stories from the community. We also have the homepage,
- 1:42Speaker 2: which is filled with nearly six thousand articles that are
- 1:46Speaker 2: all available to you for free right there on expedition
- 1:51Speaker 2: portal dot com. We have two to five articles per
- 1:54Speaker 2: day that go up on the website that written by
- 1:58Speaker 2: our very experienced staff, which includes global travelers like Bram
- 2:02Speaker 2: Bell and Ashley Giordano. I have many articles on there
- 2:07Speaker 2: and many contributors like Dan Grek and others from around
- 2:10Speaker 2: the world, so please take a minute and check out
- 2:13Speaker 2: expeditionportal dot com. It's a great way to support the
- 2:17Speaker 2: podcast and to connect with the community. I just I
- 2:21Speaker 2: really like the content that you produce. I watch very
- 2:23Speaker 2: little YouTube because I just don't have time. But there
- 2:26Speaker 2: has been more than a few occasions where one of
- 2:29Speaker 2: your videos will pop up and I'm like, that looks
- 2:32Speaker 2: like a really beautiful route. There was one that comes
- 2:34Speaker 2: to mind. It you guys were traveling to this very
- 2:37Speaker 2: remote lake and it was like it was proper low range,
- 2:41Speaker 2: and you guys have built jeeps and you were working
- 2:44Speaker 2: hard to get to this beautiful lake, and you guys
- 2:47Speaker 2: camped out for days. Nobody was there. And I think
- 2:50Speaker 2: that's one of the benefits of having a more capable
- 2:52Speaker 2: vehicle is there's so many more people camping now, there's
- 2:55Speaker 2: so many more people in the backcountry dot you can
- 2:58Speaker 2: create like a it's like a gatekeeper. You can. By
- 3:01Speaker 2: having a very capable jeep, you can get a little
- 3:04Speaker 2: bit further. Is that something you find works for you.
- 3:07Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, I mean I like doing it all.
- 3:09Speaker 3: I like going to the places where you know, popular,
- 3:11Speaker 3: but we really like to find those little, little tucked
- 3:14Speaker 3: away places that are hard to get to that there's
- 3:16Speaker 3: we know that there's not going to be anybody there,
- 3:18Speaker 3: like yeah, and so yeah, it's a it's been an
- 3:20Speaker 3: interesting transition through life trying to figure out what my
- 3:23Speaker 3: four wheel like, you know, how I like to.
- 3:26Speaker 4: Do it, and it's evolved over time.
- 3:28Speaker 3: But we'd love to just like go far away, get
- 3:31Speaker 3: get as remote as we can and then all right,
- 3:33Speaker 3: there's an obstacle along the way, which you know, in
- 3:36Speaker 3: the overland world you want to you know, you really
- 3:37Speaker 3: want to conserve your vehicle and take care of your vehicle.
- 3:39Speaker 3: But you know, we feel like we've built them well
- 3:41Speaker 3: and we're prepared and if something goes wrong, we can
- 3:44Speaker 3: fix it. Or there's you know, you're with a buddy.
- 3:45Speaker 3: So yeah, let's go tackle this hard trail. Yeah, we'll
- 3:48Speaker 3: tackle this hard trail and see if we can get
- 3:50Speaker 3: to that lake that you're talking.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure. And that was it was such a
- 3:53Speaker 2: neat video. I mean I watched the entire thing, which
- 3:55Speaker 2: never happened, thank you, so like no, I mean I
- 3:57Speaker 2: just like wanted to see you guys get there and
- 3:59Speaker 2: then and then when you did, it was beautiful and
- 4:02Speaker 2: the campsite was gorgeous and I think that having that
- 4:05Speaker 2: kind of content out there is so helpful for people
- 4:09Speaker 2: that maybe don't even know what's in their own backyard.
- 4:12Speaker 2: And I have to say that the trails are difficult
- 4:14Speaker 2: and the areas are remote enough that I don't think
- 4:16Speaker 2: that it's over it's like over popularizing some of those areas.
- 4:21Speaker 2: I just don't find that people really go to that
- 4:23Speaker 2: places that they don't know. The Rubicon is always going
- 4:26Speaker 2: to be over trafficked, but that little lake, I would
- 4:28Speaker 2: doubt it gets a whole lot more traffic, maybe a
- 4:30Speaker 2: little bit more. Yeah, although I want to go there now.
- 4:33Speaker 3: Yeah, there's been there's been some amazing places that we've
- 4:36Speaker 3: just found on accident. Like we know that there's this
- 4:38Speaker 3: difficult trail and we want to go there, and then
- 4:40Speaker 3: you get to the end of the trail and you're like,
- 4:42Speaker 3: wait a minute, look at this camp spot. This is incredible,
- 4:45Speaker 3: and this is the only way we could have got
- 4:47Speaker 3: here was with you know, having thirty seven inch tires
- 4:49Speaker 3: and all the things, and so it's just yeah, I
- 4:52Speaker 3: love it.
- 4:52Speaker 4: I love it.
- 4:53Speaker 3: When you it's like, you know, overlanding is a challenge,
- 4:55Speaker 3: it's a mission. You know, from the military life, it's
- 4:57Speaker 3: a mission for me. But then you add the element of,
- 5:00Speaker 3: you know, there's a little battle that's going to happen
- 5:01Speaker 3: because we've got to tackle this big obstacle, whether it's
- 5:04Speaker 3: you know this this.
- 5:05Speaker 4: Mountain or rocks or mud or whatever it is. And
- 5:08Speaker 4: it just adds a little bit of element.
- 5:10Speaker 2: Of like uncertainty. Yeah.
- 5:13Speaker 4: But you also once you're done, you're like, oh, that
- 5:15Speaker 4: was so there's a sense of accomplishing.
- 5:18Speaker 2: Well, let's dig a little bit into your military background.
- 5:21Speaker 2: I appreciate your service. I mean, you retired from the
- 5:24Speaker 2: military and and we're really honored to have you here
- 5:28Speaker 2: and recognize your service. But talk a little bit about
- 5:31Speaker 2: where did you serve, What did you learn about travel
- 5:33Speaker 2: or what What are some of the things you learned
- 5:35Speaker 2: in the military that applied to what you do now. Yeah.
- 5:38Speaker 3: So when I graduated high school, I went to Itt
- 5:42Speaker 3: Technical Institute for Oh.
- 5:43Speaker 4: I remember those commercials. Yeah, they got me. They suck
- 5:46Speaker 4: with me.
- 5:47Speaker 3: And I went for like like a quarter and then
- 5:49Speaker 3: I was just driving to school one day. I was
- 5:51Speaker 3: living in Arizona and I was just like this is
- 5:53Speaker 3: not for me. And I was just one of those days.
- 5:56Speaker 3: I just drove around for like four hours, like contemplating life,
- 5:58Speaker 3: you know, eighteen years old or I didn't know anything
- 6:02Speaker 3: that did it. Yeah, And I started thinking about the military,
- 6:05Speaker 3: and of course, well the member of the Navy's motto
- 6:08Speaker 3: back in the nineties it's not just a job, it's
- 6:10Speaker 3: an adventure, yea.
- 6:11Speaker 4: And I was like, oh, that's I want to go
- 6:13Speaker 4: have some adventure.
- 6:14Speaker 3: So I went to the recruiting office and I said
- 6:18Speaker 3: I want to join the Navy, and they're like, okay,
- 6:19Speaker 3: how soon you want to go?
- 6:20Speaker 2: And I was like, no, when can I go? I
- 6:21Speaker 2: want to go now?
- 6:22Speaker 4: And desert storm was just starting.
- 6:24Speaker 2: To kick up.
- 6:25Speaker 3: Sure, so they were all about like bringing folks in
- 6:27Speaker 3: and what year was that. The un was in ninety okay,
- 6:30Speaker 3: and so that's when I was born.
- 6:32Speaker 2: Oh and it was a few year years before I
- 6:34Speaker 2: went in in ninety three, so just shortly after.
- 6:36Speaker 3: You so, less than two weeks later, I was in
- 6:38Speaker 3: San Diego Boo Camp and then from there it was
- 6:40Speaker 3: literally an adventure. All ships and hospital commands and deployments
- 6:45Speaker 3: with the Marines, and combat zones and all the things
- 6:48Speaker 3: humanitarian missions that changed my life, you know, just all
- 6:50Speaker 3: these things over twenty six years.
- 6:53Speaker 2: And what an incredible career.
- 6:54Speaker 3: Man, you got to go all over the world, which
- 6:56Speaker 3: just you know, after you retire, you're like, I want
- 6:59Speaker 3: some of that Camaradoe and I want some of that adventure.
- 7:01Speaker 4: And so how do you get that back?
- 7:02Speaker 3: And this man, I want to talk about a way
- 7:04Speaker 3: to Philip boy go do some overlanding.
- 7:06Speaker 2: Well, and you were a Corman, So for those that
- 7:08Speaker 2: are listening, kind of give people some insights of what
- 7:12Speaker 2: you learned about in the military that helped apply to
- 7:15Speaker 2: be a vehicle based travel as far as medical medical
- 7:19Speaker 2: equipment kit you're bringing along. What kind of training do
- 7:21Speaker 2: you recommend that people get before they start traveling remote?
- 7:25Speaker 4: Yeah, so in the navy, so Corman is like a medic.
- 7:28Speaker 3: And I was on a ship for a while and
- 7:30Speaker 3: then I went to a couple of different commands, worked
- 7:33Speaker 3: in the er, did some that kind of stuff, ransom ambulances,
- 7:36Speaker 3: and then I went to what's called Advanced Independent due
- 7:38Speaker 3: to Corman school, which is pretty extensive.
- 7:40Speaker 2: And then you become you're like.
- 7:42Speaker 3: The ship's doctor, but you're not like a doctor in
- 7:44Speaker 3: the civilian world, but more like a paramedic. Maybe no,
- 7:47Speaker 3: it's not like a peace like yeah, yeah, it's amazing.
- 7:50Speaker 3: Like I was for three hundred and thirty people on
- 7:52Speaker 3: a destroyer for three years. I was the senior medical
- 7:54Speaker 3: officer on there, amazing. So you get some pretty advanced training,
- 7:58Speaker 3: but over time, as you progress, you you know, you
- 8:01Speaker 3: get promoted and your your responsibilities changed. Now you're in
- 8:03Speaker 3: charge of people and now you're coordinating missions and logistics,
- 8:06Speaker 3: and those things really helped me figure out how to
- 8:09Speaker 3: be you know, how to plan overland trips because when
- 8:12Speaker 3: you're planning a deployment overseas and you have to take
- 8:15Speaker 3: medical gear, and you got to take people, and you
- 8:17Speaker 3: got to you know, where am I going to go?
- 8:19Speaker 3: And where are my destinations and how it's all my
- 8:21Speaker 3: stuff going to get there? That that's all stuff that
- 8:23Speaker 3: absolutely transfers over into overlanding, right, And so it.
- 8:27Speaker 4: Feels like that was just an easy thing. It's easy
- 8:30Speaker 4: to do it for four seats in a jeep instead
- 8:32Speaker 4: of a three destroyer, right, Yeah, but uh incredible.
- 8:37Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:38Speaker 3: And then you know medical, I think that's a piece
- 8:40Speaker 3: that a lot of people in our community put to
- 8:43Speaker 3: the side, is the medical piece. And I try to
- 8:45Speaker 3: promote that as often as I can. And it's as
- 8:48Speaker 3: simple as going to like the Red Cross website and
- 8:50Speaker 3: you can do an online first aid course. I think
- 8:52Speaker 3: everybody should do something like that. In persons always going
- 8:55Speaker 3: to be better, but at least.
- 8:56Speaker 4: Get some some some idea of what's going on and.
- 8:59Speaker 3: Carry a kit, and don't just carry a kit. Open
- 9:02Speaker 3: it up and know what's in there and how to
- 9:03Speaker 3: use it, and that's so important.
- 9:05Speaker 2: But yeah, check to see if stuff expires. You know,
- 9:08Speaker 2: sometimes kits can get wet. They could be in the
- 9:10Speaker 2: bottom of a drawer and then get wet and they
- 9:12Speaker 2: get moldy. So you got to inspect your equipment before
- 9:15Speaker 2: you go. And then a lot of times people are
- 9:17Speaker 2: afraid to bring a little more comprehensive kit along because
- 9:20Speaker 2: they're like, I don't have the training, but you might.
- 9:22Speaker 2: There might be someone there that does have the trending Yeah.
- 9:24Speaker 4: It's kind of like that was the smart guy response.
- 9:26Speaker 4: It's like, oh, well, I don't know how to use
- 9:27Speaker 4: all that stuff, so I don't need the tools for
- 9:29Speaker 4: the stuff. I don't know how to wrench on.
- 9:31Speaker 2: Yeah, but somebody might come along that knows how to
- 9:33Speaker 2: wrench on. Somebody would start.
- 9:35Speaker 1: Like these days, somebody might be walking you through it
- 9:37Speaker 1: exact probably the only option, you know, or a satellite
- 9:40Speaker 1: phone or some kind of messenger or something.
- 9:42Speaker 2: Yeah, telemedicine is becoming more and more available, and now
- 9:45Speaker 2: you can do it via video calling. So you can
- 9:48Speaker 2: you know, you can show the wound, or you can
- 9:50Speaker 2: show the skin lesion or the symp you can describe
- 9:54Speaker 2: the symptoms, or they can the doctor can talk to
- 9:56Speaker 2: the patient a little bit and do a much better
- 9:59Speaker 2: assessment because of the video capabilities. Now, yeah, that's one
- 10:02Speaker 2: hundred percent. I love it.
- 10:03Speaker 3: You know, there was like there was a lot of
- 10:05Speaker 3: pushback about starlink when it first came out, and I
- 10:07Speaker 3: think everybody's realized what an asset it is.
- 10:09Speaker 1: To to us one, I would say, it just takes discipline, right,
- 10:12Speaker 1: I mean, like I've noticed that it's just always on,
- 10:15Speaker 1: like on my camper, like I have a lot of batteries.
- 10:17Speaker 4: It's just always on.
- 10:19Speaker 1: And then like you'll be in an event or you
- 10:20Speaker 1: be camp with somebody and you know, somebody else then
- 10:22Speaker 1: starts depending on it and their wife is their kids texting them,
- 10:26Speaker 1: and you're.
- 10:26Speaker 4: Like, oh man, I really can't turn it off now
- 10:28Speaker 4: can I?
- 10:29Speaker 1: So like all these idyllic, peaceful camp sites where you
- 10:31Speaker 1: like escaped, Like you have to have the the fortue
- 10:35Speaker 1: to turn the thing off and still disconnect.
- 10:38Speaker 2: But boys, it's so powerful it's.
- 10:40Speaker 3: Difficult turn I turned mine on in the morning to
- 10:42Speaker 3: check what's going on with email, call my wife because.
- 10:45Speaker 4: I can call her over it, which is Yeah. Then
- 10:47Speaker 4: I usually leave it off for the day. But what's
- 10:49Speaker 4: great about it is and we're getting off.
- 10:51Speaker 2: Track here, but you know, we meant we're supposed to be.
- 10:54Speaker 4: Okay, good, awesome. That's that's how it works.
- 10:57Speaker 3: It makes it easier for me to get out longer.
- 10:59Speaker 3: And that's such a tool, and I think that's for
- 11:01Speaker 3: a lot of people that there's an asset and you
- 11:03Speaker 3: don't have to work this Friday.
- 11:05Speaker 4: I have better Internet in my camper than I do
- 11:09Speaker 4: at home.
- 11:10Speaker 2: Yeah, probably, like.
- 11:11Speaker 1: Like genuinely, I get like sixty five to eighty megabytes
- 11:14Speaker 1: a second at home, and I can get like three
- 11:16Speaker 1: hundred on.
- 11:18Speaker 4: Like moving down the road driving exactly.
- 11:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:21Speaker 3: We had telemedicine in the Navy, and actually when I
- 11:23Speaker 3: was on the Destroyer, we would use that, but boy,
- 11:26Speaker 3: would as rudimentary to what you can do with starlank.
- 11:28Speaker 2: Now.
- 11:28Speaker 3: I mean this was you know, many years ago, but
- 11:30Speaker 3: it was nice to be able to pick up the
- 11:31Speaker 3: phone and talk to an er doc when I.
- 11:33Speaker 2: Was out at sea.
- 11:33Speaker 4: You know, yeah, sure, so it's a good asset to have.
- 11:36Speaker 2: Yeah, no question. I just think being on a destroyer
- 11:38Speaker 2: would be so.
- 11:40Speaker 1: Like, you know, like I'm very fascinated in like campers
- 11:43Speaker 1: and that, you know, like this self sufficiency concept. And
- 11:46Speaker 1: there's nothing more self sufficient than a navy vessel that
- 11:50Speaker 1: can also like take down a small city. That's the
- 11:53Speaker 1: next level, right.
- 11:55Speaker 2: That one story of the submarine crew that spent a
- 11:58Speaker 2: year or almost a year without surfacing a nuclear submarine
- 12:03Speaker 2: and they could create their own water, they you know,
- 12:06Speaker 2: scrub their own oxygen. They I guess it's not sailed.
- 12:09Speaker 2: Maybe it is sailed. They went under the North Pole,
- 12:12Speaker 2: under the ice and just like inquite an incredible would that.
- 12:16Speaker 2: I don't know, I don't they do.
- 12:17Speaker 4: They call it diving. I don't know.
- 12:18Speaker 3: It's not for me though, because they tried. They tried
- 12:20Speaker 3: to get me to do that for years, because you
- 12:21Speaker 3: get extra pay as an independent due to Corman to
- 12:23Speaker 3: go be on a submarine, and I was like, huh,
- 12:26Speaker 3: I want to bare to go outside and see the
- 12:28Speaker 3: ocean and see the views and pull into ports.
- 12:31Speaker 4: Yeah, Jorisan's got to be able to know their limitations
- 12:33Speaker 4: like an engineered system. I think that these vessels are
- 12:37Speaker 4: just so crazy cool.
- 12:39Speaker 2: So cool, but becoming less and less relevant that you're
- 12:42Speaker 2: in the days of drones, Like every asset now is
- 12:45Speaker 2: so well.
- 12:46Speaker 3: But were they shot down a lot of the drones.
- 12:48Speaker 3: Those are destroyers off the coast. Oh yeah, they've got
- 12:51Speaker 3: the gear.
- 12:52Speaker 2: They keep getting better and better.
- 12:54Speaker 3: I loved my time on the destroyer was one of
- 12:56Speaker 3: the highlights of my career. But I think my service
- 12:58Speaker 3: with the Marines is some humanitarian stuff like that stuff
- 13:01Speaker 3: really just stuck with me because you know, when you're
- 13:04Speaker 3: in the woods, you know.
- 13:05Speaker 4: When you're in the jungle or wherever it is.
- 13:06Speaker 1: Yeah, are there any like deployments with the kind of
- 13:09Speaker 1: stick out to you?
- 13:10Speaker 3: Uh well, I'll never forget my time in East Moore.
- 13:13Speaker 3: So there was a there was a civil war with
- 13:15Speaker 3: Indonesia and they left and uh so we went in there.
- 13:19Speaker 2: I went.
- 13:19Speaker 3: It was me and a dentist and a small security
- 13:22Speaker 3: force with Marines and we spent three months just going
- 13:26Speaker 3: from village to village to village to village doing just
- 13:29Speaker 3: basically free medical and dental care and they were in
- 13:32Speaker 3: such need, you know, and you just see just see
- 13:35Speaker 3: the poverty and despair, and but you talk to them
- 13:38Speaker 3: and like they're just happy and.
- 13:40Speaker 4: I know what they know and their reality, and it.
- 13:42Speaker 3: Was just like, I'll never ever forget that three months.
- 13:45Speaker 3: That changed my life because it really kind of gave
- 13:47Speaker 3: me perspective on things. But that was I mean, there
- 13:50Speaker 3: you want to talk about a planned overland trip in
- 13:52Speaker 3: the jungles of East Moore and going to mountain villages
- 13:55Speaker 3: and there was still a little civil war these things happening,
- 13:57Speaker 3: you know, so there was.
- 13:58Speaker 4: A security element to it.
- 13:59Speaker 3: But we were going from place to place and and
- 14:02Speaker 3: you had to coordinate all that and make sure we're Yeah,
- 14:05Speaker 3: it was it was pretty much real.
- 14:06Speaker 2: It was real.
- 14:07Speaker 4: But it was so fulfilling.
- 14:08Speaker 3: I mean, you know, when you're able to when a
- 14:11Speaker 3: mom walks two miles with their kids to come make
- 14:14Speaker 3: sure they're okay, Like there was nothing wrong with them,
- 14:15Speaker 3: she just wanted you to take a look at them.
- 14:18Speaker 3: It was like, unbelievably, humbly the best thing I've ever done.
- 14:21Speaker 2: In my life. Yeah, and a universal human need to
- 14:24Speaker 2: provide for your children and make sure they're safe and
- 14:26Speaker 2: healthy and all of that, and I suspect that there's
- 14:29Speaker 2: I mean, for those that are listening, think of ways
- 14:32Speaker 2: that you can give back on your own trips, like
- 14:34Speaker 2: you were able to do that through service in the military,
- 14:36Speaker 2: but even now when you're traveling to these remote areas
- 14:40Speaker 2: in the United States or in Alaska, you still could
- 14:43Speaker 2: do those things and finding ways that we can all
- 14:45Speaker 2: give back to those communities that we get to experience. Yeah.
- 14:49Speaker 1: That so you were just up in Alaska. Yeah, you
- 14:53Speaker 1: got back in like May.
- 14:55Speaker 4: I got back like two and a half weeks ago.
- 14:56Speaker 4: You left in May.
- 14:58Speaker 1: We left in May third week and then this is
- 15:00Speaker 1: your second trip in two years.
- 15:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:03Speaker 3: So last year at the same time last year, we
- 15:05Speaker 3: did all the way through British Columbia, Yukon Northwest Territories,
- 15:09Speaker 3: all the way up to tuk tiak Tek and did
- 15:12Speaker 3: that the.
- 15:14Speaker 2: Ice road.
- 15:14Speaker 3: Oh no, we well it was so it's interesting story.
- 15:17Speaker 3: So we were right in between the two water river crossings. Yeah,
- 15:21Speaker 3: were frozen over to drive and the ferries still weren't
- 15:24Speaker 3: running when we got out there, and so we almost
- 15:27Speaker 3: didn't make it. We had to wait out a couple
- 15:28Speaker 3: days un till they got the ferries going.
- 15:30Speaker 4: It's like the Peels first and Mackenzie's second.
- 15:32Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, So we watched them like build the
- 15:35Speaker 3: ramp with dirt.
- 15:36Speaker 2: We were waiting.
- 15:37Speaker 4: We'd go check every day to see how things were going.
- 15:39Speaker 1: I remember on the Mackenzie crossing it was after the
- 15:42Speaker 1: fourth of July, but they still had all of the
- 15:46Speaker 1: ice that they must have like just bulldozed up to
- 15:50Speaker 1: try and clear this crossing, and there like little icebergs
- 15:53Speaker 1: just still sitting there, and it was like it was
- 15:56Speaker 1: like ninety something degrees and there's these icebergs that it
- 15:58Speaker 1: is still there.
- 16:00Speaker 2: They're not icebergs, it's river ice. But yeah, I've only
- 16:02Speaker 2: done it in the winter. Yeah, I've never taken any
- 16:05Speaker 2: of those ferris.
- 16:06Speaker 3: When we got up to Tuck, the ocean was still
- 16:08Speaker 3: about ninety five percent frozen. There was only just starting
- 16:11Speaker 3: the thaw.
- 16:12Speaker 2: Wow.
- 16:12Speaker 3: But we were the first outsiders because because the ferries
- 16:15Speaker 3: weren't running that they had seen in like six eight weeks.
- 16:17Speaker 3: And sure everybody in the village came up and was
- 16:19Speaker 3: talking to us and asking us worry from just the
- 16:21Speaker 3: most incredible.
- 16:22Speaker 2: Little community, right, Yah, Tuck is awesome, But.
- 16:25Speaker 3: Being there camping there on the frozen ocean was just like,
- 16:29Speaker 3: what's going.
- 16:29Speaker 4: And with Tuck, you took to your gladiator and I did.
- 16:32Speaker 2: I took my gladiator.
- 16:33Speaker 3: I towed a Patriot Campus trailer and Sean drove his
- 16:36Speaker 3: Ram twenty five hundred with a.
- 16:38Speaker 2: Four will camper on it.
- 16:39Speaker 4: Yeah, that's a good little setup.
- 16:40Speaker 2: Like it.
- 16:41Speaker 1: You know, he can kind of have his setup leave it.
- 16:44Speaker 1: If you want to leave, you can leave your trailer.
- 16:46Speaker 1: You got the jeep. That's interesting.
- 16:47Speaker 2: I like that.
- 16:47Speaker 3: But we did it a little different this to Alaska.
- 16:49Speaker 3: So I didn't take the trailer this time because we
- 16:51Speaker 3: decided that we wanted to go the interior and hit
- 16:54Speaker 3: some some good hit some real stuff, some real challenging trails.
- 16:57Speaker 2: I wishu it did and tell us about some of those.
- 16:59Speaker 2: What are some of the trails? And that was on
- 17:01Speaker 2: your way up to Tuck is when you hit the
- 17:03Speaker 2: or on your with with a Dalton No. So we did.
- 17:05Speaker 3: Yeah, So we did the Dalton Win and we just
- 17:06Speaker 3: kind of bombed up to do that because that was
- 17:08Speaker 3: the bucket list trip that you want to do. And
- 17:09Speaker 3: it was incredible because there was still quite a bit
- 17:12Speaker 3: of snow up there, but there was the Caribou migration
- 17:14Speaker 3: was happening, which is only like one and a half
- 17:16Speaker 3: to two weeks out of the year, and we just
- 17:18Speaker 3: happened to be there right at the perfect time. So
- 17:20Speaker 3: that was pretty cool that it made that really a
- 17:22Speaker 3: cool experience. But then we headed down towards Denali Highway.
- 17:26Speaker 3: Oh nice, and there are a lot of trails that
- 17:29Speaker 3: the branch off the Danali Highway. There's some good blue
- 17:32Speaker 3: and some black trails out there, and we knew we
- 17:35Speaker 3: wanted to go explore those because everybody doesn't.
- 17:37Speaker 4: Don't ally highway, which is beautiful, but we're like, no,
- 17:39Speaker 4: we want to really get deep in there.
- 17:41Speaker 1: Well, most people, it's such a significant undertaking to make
- 17:44Speaker 1: that drive. I mean, you know, it's it's in the
- 17:46Speaker 1: weeks to get up there. It's what it's a week
- 17:49Speaker 1: if you're pushing right to get there, depending on where
- 17:51Speaker 1: you're out in the US. So you just end up
- 17:53Speaker 1: getting there and then it's time to turn around to
- 17:55Speaker 1: go home. And people don't really myself included, spend much
- 17:59Speaker 1: time to Yeah, I don't know, explore the little stuff.
- 18:03Speaker 2: Right. Was there a trail that you really liked one
- 18:06Speaker 2: of the more challenging.
- 18:07Speaker 3: Ones, Well, I think the one that everybody knows is
- 18:10Speaker 3: my favorite was is the Kinect Glacier. Oh yeah, you know,
- 18:13Speaker 3: but this is water deep water crossings whatever. That was
- 18:15Speaker 3: our favorite, just because it was just an epic trail.
- 18:17Speaker 3: But there were a couple of little trails that we
- 18:19Speaker 3: did trying to get up towards the mountains and we
- 18:21Speaker 3: were just having a blast and the scenery was.
- 18:24Speaker 4: Just other world in edible.
- 18:26Speaker 3: I mean it was like and for like three weeks
- 18:29Speaker 3: all we kept doing was like, oh my gosh, that's beautiful.
- 18:31Speaker 3: You would think you would get tired of it. Not once,
- 18:33Speaker 3: but then oh yeah, oh no, we saw a grizzly,
- 18:37Speaker 3: Like there was a grizzly right on the side of
- 18:39Speaker 3: the c I love that. But but there was a
- 18:43Speaker 3: lot of late snow this year, and so there were
- 18:45Speaker 3: several times where we got stuck in the snow and
- 18:48Speaker 3: had to pull out some recovery year we ended up
- 18:51Speaker 3: spending like an hour digging a Sean's truck out of
- 18:54Speaker 3: the snow.
- 18:54Speaker 2: It was. It was a pretty brutal recovery.
- 18:56Speaker 3: But we were having a lot of fun out there,
- 18:58Speaker 3: and there's there's so many trails and and the month
- 19:01Speaker 3: wasn't long enough.
- 19:02Speaker 2: We just spent another month up there. So it's always
- 19:04Speaker 2: the case. I always want twice as much time as
- 19:06Speaker 2: to take, yeah, for sure.
- 19:07Speaker 3: But we made a point though this time, because we've
- 19:10Speaker 3: been talking about it now that we've done a couple
- 19:11Speaker 3: of trips together. It's like, all right, the trails are great,
- 19:13Speaker 3: we got to go to all that stuff, but what
- 19:14Speaker 3: else can we see to see Alaska? And so that's
- 19:17Speaker 3: where we were like, you know, there's museums and there's
- 19:20Speaker 3: old you know, mines and all these little things that
- 19:23Speaker 3: we made sure.
- 19:23Speaker 4: We're like, you need to stop and see this because
- 19:25Speaker 4: it's great.
- 19:25Speaker 1: Austin's cool. And yeah, it's so easy to go up there.
- 19:29Speaker 1: And I did it the wrong way, I guess. And
- 19:32Speaker 1: you just stick to the highways, you know, because there's
- 19:34Speaker 1: just so much to see you have to dig a
- 19:36Speaker 1: little deeper.
- 19:37Speaker 4: And I think that that's cool. I don't think there's
- 19:39Speaker 4: the wrong way to see Alaska. Yeah, I mean just
- 19:41Speaker 4: seeing Alaska in itself is incredible. Yeah, you just hit
- 19:46Speaker 4: it at Peak Bug. Yeah you saw animals.
- 19:49Speaker 1: I saw like one scraggly moose and like a raccoon
- 19:52Speaker 1: eating out of a trash can or something.
- 19:54Speaker 2: So it's like, that's why I love to go on
- 19:58Speaker 2: I need to redo. Yeah, because you can also get
- 20:00Speaker 2: the Aurora. When you go early enough in the year,
- 20:02Speaker 2: you get the Aurora.
- 20:03Speaker 1: I would love I would love to take an expedition
- 20:05Speaker 1: camper north in the winter, like take my Earth rom
- 20:09Speaker 1: or like take a truckhouse or something. And I think
- 20:12Speaker 1: that would be an interesting challenge. You could still do
- 20:15Speaker 1: a lot of the ice roads, but camping in that
- 20:19Speaker 1: condition would be Yeah, I think that that would be
- 20:21Speaker 1: kind of a.
- 20:22Speaker 3: So we talked about that, and for us, it's like
- 20:25Speaker 3: we want to get to camp and mail to get
- 20:26Speaker 3: outside and enjoyed it. And if it's if it's fifteen below.
- 20:30Speaker 4: Well we're talking about that year underwater in the Submarine's
- 20:32Speaker 4: basically you're not leaving the camper not much.
- 20:37Speaker 2: But I'm with you.
- 20:38Speaker 4: I would love to see it and then experience it,
- 20:40Speaker 4: just the camping.
- 20:41Speaker 1: I feel like I've never obviously Scott has, but I've
- 20:44Speaker 1: never experienced like that, that like frigid darkness of winter.
- 20:51Speaker 4: I mean, like, I'm from Chicago, but that's a couple
- 20:54Speaker 4: of thousand miles out of San Diego, so I'm even
- 20:56Speaker 4: more interesting. Oh yeah, buddy, buddy, you don't know.
- 20:59Speaker 2: It's hard. It's just hard.
- 21:00Speaker 5: There's this stuff called ice, and it's water when it's warm,
- 21:04Speaker 5: and it's surprising, like how camping gear just doesn't even
- 21:08Speaker 5: the best of camping gear doesn't perform well at minus
- 21:11Speaker 5: fifty seven.
- 21:12Speaker 2: It's just like all of it becomes a great labor. Yeah.
- 21:15Speaker 3: Well, but there was the day after we had pulled
- 21:19Speaker 3: Sean's truck out of the snow after shoveling, Like my
- 21:21Speaker 3: boots were completely soaking wet, and I had another pair
- 21:23Speaker 3: of shoes. Well, the next day we were on another
- 21:25Speaker 3: trail that was all full of snow and we actually
- 21:27Speaker 3: ended up camping in the snow, had to build a
- 21:29Speaker 3: fire on the ice, and those shoes were soaked, and
- 21:31Speaker 3: Sean had the right shoes. And I'm just like, I'm
- 21:34Speaker 3: the knucklehead from San Diego that I brought two pairs
- 21:36Speaker 3: of shoes thinking they were the right ones, and they just.
- 21:38Speaker 4: Throw those Those dang Canadians are always so nice and prepared.
- 21:42Speaker 2: Yeah, the consequences are high. Yeah, the consequences are high.
- 21:47Speaker 2: Let's talk a little because you've had a lot of
- 21:48Speaker 2: different vehicles. I mean, you've currently got a sprinter you've
- 21:51Speaker 2: got a land cruiser, two fifty, you've got a jeep.
- 21:55Speaker 2: So clearly you like all the brands. So let's talk
- 21:58Speaker 2: a little bit about some of your current builds and
- 22:00Speaker 2: maybe some of the things that you like most about them.
- 22:02Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 22:03Speaker 4: So the Gladiator for me, so I had one of
- 22:06Speaker 4: the very first Gladiators that came out. Yeah, me too,
- 22:09Speaker 4: And I love that vehicle. And it's one of those
- 22:12Speaker 4: you's diesel.
- 22:12Speaker 3: No, it's not, I wish, honestly, but I you know,
- 22:16Speaker 3: I build vehicles and we go have adventures and then
- 22:18Speaker 3: you kind of, you know, you got to rotate the
- 22:19Speaker 3: vehicles out for content unfortunately. And I was like, someday,
- 22:24Speaker 3: I'm gonna have another Gladiator because that's really like for
- 22:26Speaker 3: me what I do. That's a dependable, durable, good off
- 22:30Speaker 3: roads overland vehicles, super capable, which is important, right, do
- 22:33Speaker 3: it on thirty sevens and you can joke just about
- 22:35Speaker 3: anywhere else. Like, I'm gonna build another one. And so
- 22:37Speaker 3: that's where I was. Finally, I was like that they
- 22:40Speaker 3: the prices on them had just bottomed out.
- 22:42Speaker 4: They're such good value, right, and unbelievable.
- 22:45Speaker 2: Yeah, so you could buy a new one for about
- 22:46Speaker 2: forty four grand a few months ago.
- 22:48Speaker 1: I mean, have you looked at like what the JT
- 22:51Speaker 1: three seventy AEV trucks are. I mean, it's like you're
- 22:54Speaker 1: getting the AEV upfit for free and you're buying a
- 22:57Speaker 1: use Gladiator.
- 22:57Speaker 4: It's crazy.
- 22:58Speaker 2: Maybe that's what I need to get.
- 23:00Speaker 1: It's I mean genuinely like, I think that right now,
- 23:02Speaker 1: where we are, right now, the Gladiator.
- 23:04Speaker 4: Is the best value.
- 23:06Speaker 1: And historically, historically jeeps have always been kind of expensive.
- 23:10Speaker 1: They've had they historically had phenomenal resale value, and but
- 23:16Speaker 1: now they're just getting attacked on all sides and they've
- 23:18Speaker 1: dropped prices because Bronco Grenadier like all this GM, GMC
- 23:23Speaker 1: pickup stuff.
- 23:24Speaker 4: It's fascinating, great value.
- 23:27Speaker 3: So it's been a great I knew before I got
- 23:29Speaker 3: that vehicle exactly what I wanted to do with it,
- 23:32Speaker 3: and so what did you do with it? So it's
- 23:34Speaker 3: got it's all AV suspension, with some Billsteine shocks, avy
- 23:37Speaker 3: bumpers and all that kind of stuff. And then I
- 23:39Speaker 3: did I did something a little fun. I put a
- 23:42Speaker 3: high water forwarding exhaust on it. I saw that, so
- 23:44Speaker 3: I saw that that's like a tribute to the military
- 23:45Speaker 3: because I call it DOC right, because then I was like,
- 23:47Speaker 3: I want to at least try to bring it a
- 23:49Speaker 3: little bit of military and medical vibe.
- 23:51Speaker 1: To it, and you know, well and even have like
- 23:53Speaker 1: the little heat shield on it, which is like like,
- 23:55Speaker 1: if it didn't have the heat shield, be like, what's
- 23:57Speaker 1: that red neck doing?
- 23:58Speaker 4: But I'm like it looked like it was off a
- 23:59Speaker 4: hummer and I'm.
- 24:00Speaker 3: Like, yeah, all right, all right again, I told Magna
- 24:03Speaker 3: Flow what I wanted to do, and they looked at
- 24:05Speaker 3: me like I was crazy, and They're like, oh, no,
- 24:06Speaker 3: wait a minute, we can make this happen. And I
- 24:08Speaker 3: was like, let's like, do you want to drill a
- 24:09Speaker 3: hole on the side of your truck. I'm like, yeah,
- 24:11Speaker 3: let's drill a whole side of a truck.
- 24:13Speaker 4: So it's amazing. It's got a snorkel.
- 24:16Speaker 3: And then for the first year, I was just trying
- 24:18Speaker 3: to figure out, you know, what kind of camper I
- 24:20Speaker 3: wanted to put on there, so I was just running
- 24:21Speaker 3: a hardshell and finally put a four wheel camper in there,
- 24:23Speaker 3: and then now it's got all good.
- 24:25Speaker 2: The Project M Project M because I wanted to like it.
- 24:27Speaker 2: I love it.
- 24:28Speaker 4: I love it super light weight, right, and it's easy.
- 24:31Speaker 4: You just build it out at the back of the
- 24:32Speaker 4: way you want.
- 24:33Speaker 3: And I have I have actually have Goose gear to
- 24:36Speaker 3: get Goose giar shelves in there that I've had for
- 24:39Speaker 3: years that they've gotten from vehicle to vehicle. I can
- 24:42Speaker 3: bolt those in and out within about twenty minutes and
- 24:44Speaker 3: then I can bolt them out.
- 24:45Speaker 4: And I have my truck back back. Yeah, you have
- 24:46Speaker 4: an actual usable thing.
- 24:48Speaker 2: Put a mountain bike back there, go to home depot. Yeah,
- 24:51Speaker 2: it's usually work.
- 24:52Speaker 1: Because that's the problem is you buy like the Gladiator,
- 24:54Speaker 1: you buy the pickup, and then everybody's sit at this
- 24:58Speaker 1: table likes to mess with stuff. Yeah, and then and
- 25:00Speaker 1: then you're like, oh yeah, I'll tell my wife we've
- 25:03Speaker 1: got to pick up. We can go get mulch and
- 25:05Speaker 1: haul dirt bikes. And then there's some camper that ends
- 25:08Speaker 1: up in it, and then this goes on, and then
- 25:10Speaker 1: there's drawers in the back, and then I have like
- 25:12Speaker 1: a thirty foot long suv.
- 25:14Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, that is why I like the like the
- 25:17Speaker 2: sliding camper because I just leave it off and then
- 25:19Speaker 2: I have a pickup back right.
- 25:20Speaker 1: Yeah, and you actually like use it that way, which
- 25:23Speaker 1: is cool. I would be way lazy and it would
- 25:26Speaker 1: just it would just like it would just live there.
- 25:29Speaker 2: Yeah. It probably comes on and off three or four
- 25:31Speaker 2: times a month. Yeah, it's so easy. Yeah.
- 25:33Speaker 4: Just do you use the forklift or do you have
- 25:35Speaker 4: the No.
- 25:36Speaker 2: I just use electric like a d wall, the drill
- 25:38Speaker 2: and the jacks and it's like, I don't know, maybe
- 25:41Speaker 2: ten minutes we have it off. Yeah that's easy. That's awesome. Yeah.
- 25:44Speaker 3: I had a power wagon for a couple of years,
- 25:48Speaker 3: sliding camper and I it was I don't know, maybe
- 25:51Speaker 3: I just wasn't good at it, but the backing in
- 25:53Speaker 3: to get it to fit was always a nice to leave.
- 25:55Speaker 4: It out there, that's made me.
- 25:58Speaker 2: Yeah. So then you how did you like the power wagon?
- 26:01Speaker 4: Oh? What a great vehicle. Just don't put a camper
- 26:03Speaker 4: on the back of it.
- 26:04Speaker 2: A project that would be great doesn't have enough payload.
- 26:06Speaker 3: It doesn't, It really doesn't. I had to do a
- 26:08Speaker 3: lot of work to the suspension to make it handle
- 26:10Speaker 3: it and it still wasn't great. But the power wagon itself, man,
- 26:13Speaker 3: I love that truck. It's such a good truck.
- 26:15Speaker 4: I think putting the project them on there would be
- 26:18Speaker 4: Ye's gonna do it over That's what I do because
- 26:21Speaker 4: the power wagons.
- 26:22Speaker 1: This it's a little lighter than the I've had, like
- 26:25Speaker 1: p xls, and those just get a bit heavy, you know.
- 26:30Speaker 4: Like the power wagons also considerably cheaper. I like the engine.
- 26:35Speaker 1: Until recently it actually had a considerably better transmission.
- 26:39Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 26:39Speaker 1: I like the power wagon, but I think it like
- 26:41Speaker 1: they even say like it avoids the warranty if you
- 26:43Speaker 1: put a camper in.
- 26:44Speaker 4: Yeah, or there's some language like that, do not.
- 26:47Speaker 2: It's got like a thousand pounds payload. Yeah, in a
- 26:50Speaker 2: three quarter ton truck. So Tacoma's got more now how
- 26:55Speaker 2: the turns of table? Yeah, a good truck. It was
- 27:00Speaker 2: a good truck.
- 27:01Speaker 4: So then you go to sprinter. Yeah, so I've had
- 27:04Speaker 4: the sprinter for about three years.
- 27:05Speaker 2: Nice you like it?
- 27:06Speaker 4: Is it like a built out sprinter? Did you build
- 27:08Speaker 4: this now?
- 27:08Speaker 2: Built out?
- 27:09Speaker 4: The guys at Agile Down, Oh yeah, John's great. Yeah,
- 27:11Speaker 4: they've helped me out a lot with that. The plan
- 27:13Speaker 4: with that was just going to be for the wife
- 27:15Speaker 4: and I and go like national parks or go spend
- 27:17Speaker 4: the weekend somewhere and just a little more creature cover.
- 27:19Speaker 4: You know, we're not young anymore.
- 27:20Speaker 3: Really getting a little older and so just being able
- 27:23Speaker 3: to open the door and just set up camp and
- 27:25Speaker 3: you're there and you can park in a regular parking
- 27:27Speaker 3: spot with that thing.
- 27:28Speaker 4: That's the thing.
- 27:29Speaker 2: Like we're kind of looking at a sprinter.
- 27:31Speaker 1: I've been very sprinter curious lately because our current truck
- 27:34Speaker 1: is like it's long, you know, it's built on a
- 27:39Speaker 1: four CA chassis, it's a quad cab, it's toll feet tall.
- 27:43Speaker 1: It's just it's a bear to drive. And we're looking
- 27:45Speaker 1: at this PanAm thing and other stuff and like it's
- 27:48Speaker 1: it's the perfect footprint because it's you can fit a toilet,
- 27:52Speaker 1: a shower bed, you can put air conditioning on them,
- 27:56Speaker 1: and then it fits in a regular parking spring. It's
- 27:58Speaker 1: amazing and a sprinter can go everywhere. We had We
- 28:01Speaker 1: had Peter and Kathy Holcombe, who did I mean they've
- 28:04Speaker 1: they've been living and learn for eleven years. This is
- 28:07Speaker 1: this is actually a really good podcast we recorded this weekends.
- 28:09Speaker 1: We're at the big Thing. They love theirs. Yeah, like
- 28:12Speaker 1: they've been everywhere. They take it all the way down
- 28:14Speaker 1: the pan Am. I just if you're not doing like
- 28:17Speaker 1: really technical stuff like that. The all wheel drive for
- 28:20Speaker 1: whel drive sprinter is such a game change.
- 28:21Speaker 4: So let me tell you because I like to push it.
- 28:23Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, we've pushed the sprinter way farther than I
- 28:26Speaker 3: ever thought it would be able to.
- 28:27Speaker 4: And you have like a you have a lift on
- 28:28Speaker 4: it if you're working with John, the rib kit, the
- 28:31Speaker 4: rip kit, it's got thirty threes, it's got the rear locker,
- 28:33Speaker 4: which is a game changer. Oh yeah, locker now, yeah yeah,
- 28:36Speaker 4: And so that was a game changer.
- 28:38Speaker 3: And then man, that thing will we you know, we've
- 28:40Speaker 3: gotten places that I've taken the GEP before.
- 28:42Speaker 2: I'm like, I don't know if we're going to get
- 28:43Speaker 2: these up here.
- 28:43Speaker 3: And I go with John because we've become good friends
- 28:45Speaker 3: and a couple of guys and there's like a small
- 28:47Speaker 3: group of us. Now we're like, all right, we're gonna
- 28:49Speaker 3: go up to Kytie Flats up in the eastern Sierras
- 28:51Speaker 3: where you know that's not an easy trail, and when
- 28:54Speaker 3: you can get that thing up there, it's incredible.
- 28:56Speaker 2: And we were in Arizona. We were in Cofa.
- 28:57Speaker 3: Yeah, Nofah is great, and we were out there and
- 29:00Speaker 3: just having a great time and we got to this
- 29:02Speaker 3: cabin and there's these old guys there and jeeps and
- 29:05Speaker 3: they're out camping. They're looking at us like we're crazy
- 29:07Speaker 3: pulling up in these sprinters. I'm like, how did you
- 29:09Speaker 3: get in here? I'm like, we just drove them in here.
- 29:12Speaker 3: And then we started talking to them and they're looking
- 29:13Speaker 3: and we tell them where we're going, and they're like,
- 29:15Speaker 3: you guys won't make it. There's no way you're taking
- 29:18Speaker 3: those vehicles up there. And we did and it was
- 29:20Speaker 3: fun and it was challenging, but we made it. And
- 29:22Speaker 3: we saw them at the gas station. They're like, you
- 29:24Speaker 3: got to be kidding me. You got those sprinters in
- 29:26Speaker 3: that trail.
- 29:26Speaker 2: I was like, it was amazing.
- 29:27Speaker 4: So you can push those things a little bit.
- 29:29Speaker 2: If you build a break the air locker is key
- 29:30Speaker 2: because then because it doesn't have a low some of
- 29:34Speaker 2: them have a low range, but it's only one point
- 29:35Speaker 2: five to one.
- 29:36Speaker 4: It's not even that.
- 29:37Speaker 2: I think. Yeah, so if you and the new ones
- 29:39Speaker 2: don't have low range at all. But if you lock
- 29:43Speaker 2: the roode diff then you're not getting all that traction
- 29:45Speaker 2: control intervention. So you get all that torque back because
- 29:48Speaker 2: it's just not fighting you with the brakes, right.
- 29:51Speaker 4: Yeah, and the front of the sprinter.
- 29:53Speaker 3: It's not a true fifty to fifty four wheel drive
- 29:55Speaker 3: fifty percent split. It's only like I think thirty three
- 29:58Speaker 3: percent in the front. And so the weak link with
- 30:01Speaker 3: the transfer case is the front shaft and those will
- 30:05Speaker 3: snap if you, if you like, lift a tire and
- 30:07Speaker 3: you're and four wheel drive and the tire starts spinning,
- 30:09Speaker 3: you know, trying to put power to that tire that's
- 30:11Speaker 3: in the air, and you drop that tire down on
- 30:12Speaker 3: the ground. It stops it abruptly, like it'll easily snap.
- 30:15Speaker 4: It's it's the drive shaft from the differential to the
- 30:18Speaker 4: transfer case.
- 30:19Speaker 3: It's it's an incidental it's in where their warm gears
- 30:21Speaker 3: are inside the case itself. Yeah, I've seen it happen
- 30:24Speaker 3: twice with other people's vans because and they were lifting
- 30:27Speaker 3: tires and and you put that rear locker in there,
- 30:30Speaker 3: and you can almost go everywhere you need to go
- 30:32Speaker 3: into will drive with a rear locker.
- 30:33Speaker 2: And then you don't have to weight on the back.
- 30:35Speaker 3: Yeah, and so it's it's really good. I mean there's
- 30:37Speaker 3: times eight years four low. But you got to really
- 30:39Speaker 3: be careful. Don't lift that tire and I'll let it
- 30:41Speaker 3: slam down on the ground, and does yours still have
- 30:43Speaker 3: like the proper low range. I mean, no, it's not
- 30:46Speaker 3: a great low range, but it has an actual low range.
- 30:48Speaker 2: Yeah, it doesn't have an actual low range. Now the
- 30:50Speaker 2: new one's just have a lower first gears at all.
- 30:52Speaker 4: Yeah, but they got a little more horsepower.
- 30:54Speaker 2: Which is they do And I drove one. It was nice. Yeah,
- 30:56Speaker 2: it's cool.
- 30:57Speaker 4: So I like the sprinterer van way more than I
- 30:58Speaker 4: thought I was going to.
- 31:00Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 31:00Speaker 1: Yeah, Like I kind of ragged on sprinters for a
- 31:03Speaker 1: while or two. And because they're so common, you know,
- 31:08Speaker 1: like I drove up from Arizona and there's just so many,
- 31:14Speaker 1: specifically the window Bago Revel, Like there's eight squillion.
- 31:18Speaker 2: Of the things. That's what I have.
- 31:20Speaker 1: Yeah, well that's what we're looking at it because like
- 31:21Speaker 1: we could drive it to South America, ship the thing back,
- 31:25Speaker 1: throw the keys of the first RV dealer and walk away.
- 31:27Speaker 3: It's got a forty gallon fuel tank, so it's diesel,
- 31:29Speaker 3: so I can go about five hundred miles on a tank.
- 31:31Speaker 4: Yeah, which great. Right, It's got.
- 31:33Speaker 3: Thirty five gallons of water, six hundred and forty EMP
- 31:36Speaker 3: hours of battery, Like we just it's got air conditioning.
- 31:39Speaker 4: It doesn't matter what the weather is outside, We've got heat.
- 31:41Speaker 4: Which battery kit did you do?
- 31:42Speaker 3: It's the the Lithonys. We just upgraded the Rome Riggs
- 31:46Speaker 3: kit that goes on there. And I mean, you just
- 31:49Speaker 3: don't think about those things in that vehicle. We're in
- 31:50Speaker 3: the jeep. I'm constantly like how much fuel I got
- 31:53Speaker 3: this thing. I'm like, I got to pull over them
- 31:54Speaker 3: as well get gas.
- 31:55Speaker 2: One.
- 31:55Speaker 1: I did the long range tank in the Gladiator, and
- 31:59Speaker 1: that was actually because mine was on thirty sevens. It
- 32:02Speaker 1: had an at overland like summit camper on it, but
- 32:05Speaker 1: it was it's still got like decent fuel economy. I
- 32:08Speaker 1: geared it properly, but small tank.
- 32:10Speaker 4: It wasn't that big.
- 32:11Speaker 1: Like I remember like a few times in Baja, just
- 32:14Speaker 1: like the guys eating lunch, you know, the gas stations
- 32:17Speaker 1: closed for an hour and I'm sitting there like I
- 32:20Speaker 1: can't make it to the next one. Yeah, you know,
- 32:22Speaker 1: it works out. But fuel range, it's like it's that
- 32:25Speaker 1: five hundred mile thing I know that you like, for
- 32:27Speaker 1: international it's always it's always a thousand kilometers of autonomy,
- 32:31Speaker 1: But like for the US, if you can get to
- 32:33Speaker 1: that five hundred mile number, which isn't really I guess that.
- 32:36Speaker 2: Far off from a thousand. Yeah, maybe seventy eight hundred.
- 32:39Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, I can't do the conversion of my head
- 32:42Speaker 1: while I'm talking, but I think that that works pretty well.
- 32:45Speaker 4: Yeah, that's the that's the I think the Achilles Heel
- 32:48Speaker 4: a little lancreaser.
- 32:49Speaker 2: Yeah, fifty is Yeah, So.
- 32:50Speaker 4: What's going on with that thing? I love it, first
- 32:52Speaker 4: of all. Yeah, there's so solid, great, it looks it
- 32:55Speaker 4: looks great.
- 32:56Speaker 2: It's an amazing pig.
- 32:57Speaker 4: I'll tell you.
- 32:58Speaker 3: I almost it was between that and a Grenadier, and
- 33:01Speaker 3: that day I was I had both to go scheduled
- 33:04Speaker 3: to test drive, but I had already test driven the Grenadier.
- 33:07Speaker 4: I spent a day. The land Cruiser drives better. Oh
- 33:10Speaker 4: that's what that's why driver. Yeah.
- 33:12Speaker 3: Yeah, So I test drove the land Cruiser and I
- 33:14Speaker 3: was like, oh, yeah, this is it's so incredible and it.
- 33:17Speaker 2: Will off road.
- 33:18Speaker 3: It's got an amazing you know, it's got an amazing
- 33:20Speaker 3: trash control system, it's got a rear locker, it's got
- 33:22Speaker 3: the Suave Artist connected.
- 33:23Speaker 1: And the suspension system is a little more known, Like
- 33:26Speaker 1: you can make that thing in the aftermarket just do
- 33:29Speaker 1: crazy things whatever. Where with the Grenadier, you're the Grenade
- 33:33Speaker 1: is more of a seventy series right, Like this you
- 33:36Speaker 1: can make into a pre runner if you wanted, you know.
- 33:38Speaker 4: Yeah, well we put it.
- 33:39Speaker 3: We put a Camberg system on there, and it's got
- 33:42Speaker 3: King shocks. It's got thirty three's right now, but thirty
- 33:46Speaker 3: fives are coming once. I've got a bumper coming. And
- 33:48Speaker 3: then I've been out in the desert and just bombing
- 33:51Speaker 3: in this thing, Like you don't do that at.
- 33:53Speaker 4: A jeap like Gader.
- 33:55Speaker 1: Yeah, there's a great Arguably the Jeep would be better
- 33:58Speaker 1: at that than the Grenadier. It doesn't have that much
- 34:01Speaker 1: up travel, no, but does have a bigger fuel tak yeah,
- 34:04Speaker 1: and a.
- 34:05Speaker 2: Ton more payload. Like if you need the payload.
- 34:07Speaker 4: Then yeah, I think mine's almost seventeen.
- 34:09Speaker 2: Hundred, almost twice the payload of that ten fifty.
- 34:12Speaker 4: But the Lankers has been fun.
- 34:13Speaker 3: We ripped out, I ripped out the rear seats, put
- 34:16Speaker 3: the Goose gear system in there, got his whole bed
- 34:19Speaker 3: system amazing, and then we got a Casey roof rack
- 34:22Speaker 3: and lights and yeah.
- 34:23Speaker 2: That looks good. I like that Casey.
- 34:25Speaker 4: Yeah, it does look nice. It does look nice.
- 34:27Speaker 2: I just drove one of their Tacomas that had the
- 34:29Speaker 2: rack on it, and I was really impressed with the
- 34:32Speaker 2: quality fit and finished. Yeah.
- 34:33Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I just like that two fifty, like owning
- 34:37Speaker 1: the Grenadier, like I like it, you know, like I'm
- 34:40Speaker 1: all like, you know, I basically need a pith helmet.
- 34:44Speaker 2: We're weird. So we're weird, like different, it's not.
- 34:47Speaker 1: It keeps me entertained. But then I'll like, you know,
- 34:51Speaker 1: I'm driving in town and I see somebody go by
- 34:53Speaker 1: with like one of the two fifty land Cruisers, and
- 34:55Speaker 1: I'm like, maybe I should.
- 34:57Speaker 4: Have bought that.
- 34:58Speaker 1: Like if I had, you would have already sold it.
- 35:00Speaker 1: I would have already sold it. But if I had
- 35:01Speaker 1: one vehicle, that would be great. I don't know, I'd
- 35:07Speaker 1: be bored. That's no problem. Yeah, but it's just a
- 35:11Speaker 1: sensible choice. The payload is the thing. Yeah, what is
- 35:14Speaker 1: the payload on the you.
- 35:15Speaker 4: Know, I don't know if it might be a little
- 35:18Speaker 4: hair more than a thousand, but yeah, because the Forerunner
- 35:21Speaker 4: is quite a bit less to ninety found.
- 35:24Speaker 3: Yeah, but for me it tost six thousand pounds, which
- 35:26Speaker 3: means no problem with the Patriot Camp Australier.
- 35:28Speaker 4: So that'll be my primary, like too vehicle. That's nice though. Yeah,
- 35:31Speaker 4: and the goose gear stuff will be nice in there.
- 35:33Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 35:33Speaker 4: Did you do like I did the goose gear in
- 35:35Speaker 4: the back of my Grenadieri and I did demetic drawer fridge.
- 35:38Speaker 2: Yep. Did you do that? Yep, yep.
- 35:40Speaker 3: Oh, it's such a game change. Yeah, we actually did,
- 35:44Speaker 3: Like it must have been six or seven years ago.
- 35:47Speaker 3: My buddy Marco is really handy with eighty twenty and
- 35:50Speaker 3: so we built my jeeps like first drawer system and
- 35:53Speaker 3: we used one of those demetic drawers. That was the
- 35:55Speaker 3: first time I was exposed to that. I was like,
- 35:57Speaker 3: this is incredible because it doesn't take up any space.
- 35:59Speaker 3: It's function.
- 36:00Speaker 1: You still end up with like a like a you
- 36:02Speaker 1: know you're talking about kind of the gladiator. You can
- 36:04Speaker 1: take some of that stuff out for at least for
- 36:07Speaker 1: me with the grenadier, I fold my rear seat down.
- 36:10Speaker 1: I don't do the full tumble thing. I just fold
- 36:13Speaker 1: it down. It's basically at the same height. I can
- 36:15Speaker 1: put big stuff in there, you know, whatever thing I
- 36:18Speaker 1: bought on Amazon, and I take the box to the
- 36:21Speaker 1: office to throw it away or something. It's not like
- 36:23Speaker 1: it's getting used for work. But you know it's it's
- 36:27Speaker 1: just a big cavernous space and that's really nice and
- 36:30Speaker 1: it actually makes it more usable. And I don't really
- 36:33Speaker 1: need like a huge fridge.
- 36:35Speaker 2: That's the problem with a fridge. If you have an
- 36:37Speaker 2: eighty liter fridge, you'll fill it up. If you have
- 36:39Speaker 2: a twenty five liter fridge, you'll fill it up. Like forrfadge,
- 36:42Speaker 2: you're going to fill it up.
- 36:43Speaker 1: Like most people are doing a two or three night trip.
- 36:47Speaker 1: And if it's just yourself or yourself and one other person,
- 36:50Speaker 1: these dwarfridges are really great. But I see when you
- 36:54Speaker 1: have a family and you're gonna go for a little
- 36:55Speaker 1: bit longer.
- 36:56Speaker 4: All of a sudden, you.
- 36:57Speaker 1: Have two kids and you've got all this so that
- 37:00Speaker 1: the kids need, and then there's also the food and
- 37:02Speaker 1: all this stuff. Like like I get it, But I
- 37:04Speaker 1: think that more people should look at these store fridges.
- 37:07Speaker 4: And you could do too. What is it double stack?
- 37:10Speaker 4: You can I think one could run it as a freezer. Correct, Yeah, yeah,
- 37:14Speaker 4: like them.
- 37:14Speaker 2: So you do so much trail driving, you go out
- 37:18Speaker 2: with so many different people, have you kind of developed
- 37:21Speaker 2: some tenants that you apply or you tell others about,
- 37:24Speaker 2: Like if you were to give someone some advice. It's like, Hey,
- 37:27Speaker 2: I've got a jeep. I'd like to go do more camping.
- 37:29Speaker 2: I'd like to find these remote places. I'd like to
- 37:32Speaker 2: go out for four or five days. What would be
- 37:34Speaker 2: kind of your punch list of advice that you would
- 37:37Speaker 2: give to someone that's looking to get started.
- 37:39Speaker 3: Yeah, I just go back to our story, and that's
- 37:41Speaker 3: just go just get some stuff and go get the basics.
- 37:44Speaker 3: You know, get your first aid kit, your fire extinguisher,
- 37:47Speaker 3: you know, your recovery, your.
- 37:48Speaker 2: Tools, and go.
- 37:49Speaker 3: My son and I that's what we did when we
- 37:50Speaker 3: got the jeep. We found they had these little books
- 37:53Speaker 3: that were in California, and we would just open it
- 37:55Speaker 3: up and were like, we're going to this trail today
- 37:57Speaker 3: and we're going to go see how we can do.
- 37:59Speaker 3: And you go do that, and then you meet up
- 38:02Speaker 3: with some people, whether it's on Facebook or a local
- 38:04Speaker 3: group or whatever. There's plenty of people out there that
- 38:06Speaker 3: want to go out with with other folks. And some
- 38:08Speaker 3: people are gonna have experience or maybe you're gonna go
- 38:10Speaker 3: out together and learn things together. But there's so much
- 38:12Speaker 3: knowledge online that you can get that, and so just
- 38:15Speaker 3: go and then don't worry about I got to have
- 38:18Speaker 3: all the things I don't need to build up my vehicle.
- 38:20Speaker 3: There's so many places where you can go in a
- 38:22Speaker 3: bone stock cheaper bone stock.
- 38:24Speaker 4: Especially modern vehicles, like they're so capable, capable.
- 38:28Speaker 3: Just get the basics and just go and then if
- 38:30Speaker 3: you want to start camping, you don't. You don't need
- 38:32Speaker 3: to go buy all the things right away. You know,
- 38:35Speaker 3: figure out what what your basic level of comfort is.
- 38:38Speaker 3: When we first started, we were hikers, and so my
- 38:40Speaker 3: son and I would just take our backpacks.
- 38:42Speaker 4: That's all we have. I look back, I'm like, man life,
- 38:44Speaker 4: it's so simple that there was.
- 38:45Speaker 2: No way in my vehicle.
- 38:47Speaker 1: But it's like I think a lot of people feel,
- 38:50Speaker 1: you know, they go to these shows and they see
- 38:53Speaker 1: these fully built out vehicles.
- 38:55Speaker 4: A lot of these are display vehicles.
- 38:58Speaker 1: You know, there's show vehicles, you know, or you have
- 39:00Speaker 1: people that are just like have been doing it for
- 39:02Speaker 1: a while, so over time they've acquired You don't need
- 39:05Speaker 1: a three thousand dollars roof tent to go spend a
- 39:07Speaker 1: night outside, you know. I mean, like there's the Walmart
- 39:11Speaker 1: tent for a reason, and you know what, you can
- 39:13Speaker 1: go to Goodwill and get them for like yep free
- 39:16Speaker 1: basically absolutely, or set them up, set them up before
- 39:19Speaker 1: you go.
- 39:19Speaker 2: Yeah, mari I has a clearance section. You can get
- 39:21Speaker 2: a Seer Designs tent for one hundred and ten bucks. Yeah. Yeah.
- 39:25Speaker 3: I think the one thing that I always tell people
- 39:26Speaker 3: that you need to invest in in your sleeping system.
- 39:28Speaker 2: You got to have a good sleeping.
- 39:30Speaker 4: Pad whatever makes you comfortable, and you got to have
- 39:32Speaker 4: a good sleeping bag if.
- 39:33Speaker 5: You get it.
- 39:34Speaker 3: You know, if you get one of those thin little
- 39:35Speaker 3: pads and you don't get a good night's sleep and
- 39:38Speaker 3: you wake up in the morning and you're cold, like
- 39:40Speaker 3: you're just not going to be happy, like you're not
- 39:41Speaker 3: going to be motivated, or yeah, make some of.
- 39:43Speaker 1: This backpacking gear, like I recently slept. My wife has
- 39:47Speaker 1: a full setup. She's way more hardcore than me, and
- 39:49Speaker 1: she'll know do Rimm Ram and John near trail and
- 39:52Speaker 1: this stuff. And I recently slept in that, and I'm like,
- 39:55Speaker 1: I could see how this would work when you just
- 39:56Speaker 1: hiked like twenty miles across the Grand Canyon, and yeah,
- 40:00Speaker 1: you could sleep on like you could sleep on a
- 40:04Speaker 1: rock and you would be fine.
- 40:05Speaker 4: But when you're in a car, like you want.
- 40:07Speaker 1: You want to you want to make yourself a little
- 40:09Speaker 1: bit more comfortable, like give yourself that that grace, right,
- 40:12Speaker 1: one hundred percent.
- 40:13Speaker 4: But back to the original question, I think.
- 40:15Speaker 3: I think if there's some anxiety or some uncertainty or
- 40:19Speaker 3: you might be scared, but it's just like anything in life.
- 40:22Speaker 4: That's that comes with anything new.
- 40:23Speaker 3: The more you do it, the easier it gets, the
- 40:25Speaker 3: more familiar it gets, You're gonna get more familiar with
- 40:27Speaker 3: your vehicle. And when I say just go out and
- 40:29Speaker 3: do it, that that sounds trivial, but really that's what
- 40:32Speaker 3: started us.
- 40:33Speaker 2: We just were like, we're gonna go.
- 40:34Speaker 3: We're just gonna go today, and we're gonna go this weekend.
- 40:36Speaker 3: And there were times we would go every single weekend.
- 40:39Speaker 3: And you just the more you do it, the more
- 40:41Speaker 3: you learn, the more comfortable you come. And I don't know,
- 40:44Speaker 3: I don't I don't have a big, like a list
- 40:46Speaker 3: of things to do that inspire folks.
- 40:48Speaker 4: Just go go have adventure, Go make memories. You won't
- 40:51Speaker 4: regret it.
- 40:52Speaker 2: Yeah, And where can people find those kinds of insights
- 40:56Speaker 2: from you? I mean, you have a YouTube channel, You've
- 40:58Speaker 2: got some other sources of information. Where can people find
- 41:02Speaker 2: like or what's your favorite series that you've done. What
- 41:04Speaker 2: are some things that people can start to look at
- 41:07Speaker 2: in your pool of content.
- 41:08Speaker 3: Yeah, so we I have a few playlists that we've
- 41:10Speaker 3: done over the years. We've done some beginner stuff where
- 41:12Speaker 3: we talk about you know, first time off road in
- 41:14Speaker 3: basics and some of the basic gear to have. So
- 41:17Speaker 3: we've got quite a few of those video playlists that
- 41:19Speaker 3: they can just run through. And then there's lots of
- 41:22Speaker 3: just off road like day trip trails that people can
- 41:25Speaker 3: experience that we've done mostly or those who are in
- 41:26Speaker 3: the West Coast, so if they're in the West Coast,
- 41:28Speaker 3: they'll take advantage of. But it'll give you an idea
- 41:30Speaker 3: of what's out there, you know, not everything has to
- 41:31Speaker 3: be a hardcore trail. And then there's a there's the
- 41:35Speaker 3: bucket List trip series if you really want to do
- 41:37Speaker 3: some overlading, and that whole series is up there.
- 41:39Speaker 2: They can watch that.
- 41:40Speaker 3: So yeah, so I think that plus on our website,
- 41:43Speaker 3: Trail recon dot com, we've got some good blogs on there.
- 41:46Speaker 4: If you know, I still like reading stuff. I love
- 41:48Speaker 4: reading Overland Journal, you know, I love reading.
- 41:49Speaker 3: All that stuff, and so that we've got some good
- 41:51Speaker 3: stuff on there that folks might find helpful as well.
- 41:53Speaker 2: So so, and that's on trail recon dot com. Correct,
- 41:56Speaker 2: and then you have like a series of articles that
- 41:59Speaker 2: talk about how to prepare, how to get started.
- 42:02Speaker 4: Yeah, there's there's some good basic stuff in there. There's
- 42:04Speaker 4: some you know, my wife's written some cooking stuff, so
- 42:06Speaker 4: there's some good that kind of stuff.
- 42:08Speaker 2: Yeah, that's great, awesome. What are the questions you get?
- 42:12Speaker 4: I just like talking trucks too.
- 42:18Speaker 3: What do you think about that Grenadier on portals and
- 42:20Speaker 3: thirty sevens or the quartermasterations?
- 42:22Speaker 1: It's cool, right, Like it's cool to look at you know.
- 42:26Speaker 1: They obviously Grenadier was kind of Magnus Stare who designed that.
- 42:29Speaker 1: They have a lot of a lot to do with
- 42:31Speaker 1: the g Wagon, so it kind of looks like the
- 42:33Speaker 1: g Wagon and starting to get some pricing on it,
- 42:37Speaker 1: you know, it's going to be it's going to be.
- 42:39Speaker 4: Six figures to just for the kit and it has
- 42:42Speaker 4: to go on a new vehicle. It's something that I
- 42:44Speaker 4: recently found out. Oh I didn't realize that. So then
- 42:47Speaker 4: you have your installation and everything. I don't know, like
- 42:51Speaker 4: I think if I was to do it, all of
- 42:54Speaker 4: these here have like a two inch lift on top
- 42:56Speaker 4: of the portals.
- 42:57Speaker 2: Yeah, that I would definitely not do.
- 42:58Speaker 4: It doesn't need it, you know, like that's it's just
- 43:00Speaker 4: not that car.
- 43:01Speaker 1: Like a wrangular Rubicon is gonna drive circles around a
- 43:04Speaker 1: Grenadier off road. Not that a Grenadier is not capable.
- 43:10Speaker 1: It's a little ghost is I guess what I'm getting at,
- 43:12Speaker 1: Like you kind of know, like you're not going to
- 43:14Speaker 1: see you're not going to see like enthusiasts bying them.
- 43:19Speaker 1: You're going to see him in Beverly Hills and Okay,
- 43:22Speaker 1: like that's cool.
- 43:23Speaker 2: Probably what they need, Yeah, a little bit more of
- 43:25Speaker 2: like a signature piece.
- 43:26Speaker 4: So it's not bad.
- 43:27Speaker 1: I guess that's what I'm saying, Like I think it's
- 43:29Speaker 1: really cool what I spend, What that's going to cost?
- 43:33Speaker 4: No, now, this seventy four weld stuff.
- 43:36Speaker 1: You know, they're kind of talking if there's enough people
- 43:38Speaker 1: that have interest, maybe we'll consider doing that and that
- 43:41Speaker 1: would be like a quarter of the price.
- 43:44Speaker 4: That would be kind of cool.
- 43:45Speaker 2: I drove one of the ones that's out there and
- 43:47Speaker 2: it was fun. Yeah, it definitely sure. It definitely made
- 43:50Speaker 2: me smile, But so far, like the Quartermaster that I'm
- 43:53Speaker 2: driving on thirty four. Is it's gone everywhere I've wanted
- 43:56Speaker 2: it to go. Yeah, I can, and I can get
- 43:58Speaker 2: in and out of it, and it fits, you know,
- 44:00Speaker 2: in most parking lots. It fits in my garage without
- 44:03Speaker 2: the camper.
- 44:04Speaker 1: It a truck like that is like it's post value right,
- 44:08Speaker 1: Like you're not you're not making like a value oriented
- 44:11Speaker 1: decision because you could go and buy a two door
- 44:15Speaker 1: av jail three seventy and put it on portals right
- 44:19Speaker 1: for what the portals are gonna cost you. So I
- 44:22Speaker 1: think in that regard like it's it's a little tough. Yeah,
- 44:26Speaker 1: so Sea, it looks good.
- 44:27Speaker 3: Sean and I had this conversation on the radio because
- 44:29Speaker 3: we were on the way back from Alaska and we
- 44:32Speaker 3: talked probably.
- 44:33Speaker 4: Hours about trucks.
- 44:34Speaker 3: And one of the things that we're talking about is,
- 44:36Speaker 3: you know, we're gonna do we have lots more of
- 44:37Speaker 3: these bucket trips planned that we're gonna do together. But
- 44:39Speaker 3: we're in two different vehicles, right, so then it's two
- 44:42Speaker 3: different parts lists and two different you know, maintenance lists
- 44:45Speaker 3: and all that kind of stuff, and we're thinking, well,
- 44:46Speaker 3: how can we like maybe find a vehicle we both love,
- 44:49Speaker 3: and so we were having that conversation and would it
- 44:52Speaker 3: be so honestly, the Quartermaster. It seemed to come out
- 44:55Speaker 3: on top. We talked about a lot of trucks. We
- 44:57Speaker 3: talked about the you know, the Ranger Raptor, and then
- 45:00Speaker 3: all those thing zones are so great. I think the
- 45:02Speaker 3: Ranger Raptor is total sleep Yeah, it's a total sleeper.
- 45:06Speaker 3: But the price point of the Quartermaster is the only
- 45:08Speaker 3: I think barrier there. But what a great vehicle, and
- 45:11Speaker 3: to tape it, I'll take an international And why the
- 45:14Speaker 3: Gladiator isn't up there because at that point the camp
- 45:17Speaker 3: I don't know. I did and share this with you
- 45:19Speaker 3: about the camshaft and my Gladiator I failed eight days
- 45:21Speaker 3: before I left for Alaska, so I had to get
- 45:24Speaker 3: that repaired right away. And I only had thirty two
- 45:26Speaker 3: thousand miles on it. So I'm looking for something that
- 45:27Speaker 3: maybe will get me a little more reliability. But to
- 45:30Speaker 3: be able to go international with these vehicles, the Gladiator
- 45:34Speaker 3: may not be the best one to do that with sore.
- 45:36Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 45:37Speaker 1: I know that you had an engine problem with it,
- 45:40Speaker 1: but that engine is so ubiquitous everywhere, like it's in
- 45:44Speaker 1: so many things, and just by the nature of being
- 45:47Speaker 1: a jeep, every issue has ten solutions for it, right,
- 45:52Speaker 1: Like there's such an aftermarket for the jeep. You can strengthen,
- 45:56Speaker 1: upgrade your way to the moon. I get it, though,
- 45:59Speaker 1: I mean the Gladiator is also just a little tight
- 46:02Speaker 1: for long trips.
- 46:03Speaker 2: That's slight difference I noticed between the Gladiator and the
- 46:06Speaker 2: Quartermaster is a lot more company.
- 46:07Speaker 1: That's why we sold ours and then went full sized truck.
- 46:10Speaker 1: Is like, you know, you think power wagon, you've had one.
- 46:14Speaker 1: I made the mistake of parking my Gladiator next to
- 46:18Speaker 1: a twenty five hundred rant and I realized it is
- 46:21Speaker 1: within inches of every dimension, Like it's effectively the same length.
- 46:26Speaker 1: It's effectively the same with It's just the use of
- 46:29Speaker 1: space is different. Obviously the Jeep it's narrow, it's got.
- 46:33Speaker 2: The axle trail.
- 46:34Speaker 1: It's made for trails, right, it's more maneuverable. I don't know,
- 46:39Speaker 1: but the power Wagon kind of has that. You know,
- 46:42Speaker 1: you got your four link or whatever they're calling it.
- 46:44Speaker 4: I don't know. It's got lockers right out of the box.
- 46:46Speaker 2: You know, you get the winch that comes factory.
- 46:48Speaker 4: It's got all the things.
- 46:50Speaker 1: I think a Quartermaster food would be. Like they've done
- 46:54Speaker 1: really well creating a vehicle that has flaws, so it
- 46:58Speaker 1: has some character that's almost charming, Like you know, they're finally.
- 47:03Speaker 1: The biggest thing is like they're finally doing the software update,
- 47:06Speaker 1: because every I don't know, if you know, every time
- 47:08Speaker 1: they've been talking about it for a long time. Yeah,
- 47:10Speaker 1: and you go over the speed that it's like, yeah,
- 47:14Speaker 1: that's going away. I mean for most people that's gone.
- 47:16Speaker 1: If you've got an update, I think that that's a
- 47:18Speaker 1: good thing.
- 47:18Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure. But the price of the Quartermaster Man, Yeah,
- 47:21Speaker 2: hopefully the tear of stuff gets all worked out.
- 47:23Speaker 4: I mean they're nearly like av Prospector price now. I
- 47:27Speaker 4: mean you can also buy two Gladiators for the price
- 47:29Speaker 4: of one.
- 47:29Speaker 1: But yeah, yeah, that's the thing is the Gladiator is
- 47:31Speaker 1: still such good value. Oh gee, yeah, So what else
- 47:34Speaker 1: have you thought about?
- 47:36Speaker 2: Again?
- 47:36Speaker 4: We had a long discussion about the Ranger Raptor.
- 47:39Speaker 2: I man, pretty good payload, fourteen hundred pounds of payload
- 47:42Speaker 2: and you got horsepower, front rear lockers, great suspension. Like
- 47:47Speaker 2: that thing is a total surprise for me. In fact,
- 47:50Speaker 2: in the last twenty years of testing cars, it's the
- 47:52Speaker 2: car that like totally took me by.
- 47:55Speaker 1: They're like the GM slash Chevy mid size AV Bison.
- 48:00Speaker 1: I know, geez, one of them's the AT four X
- 48:03Speaker 1: and one of them's the Colorado Bison.
- 48:05Speaker 4: I think that's the way of saying it.
- 48:07Speaker 2: I love that truck.
- 48:08Speaker 1: I saw one here and I'm looking at it and
- 48:11Speaker 1: I'm like, oh man, it's so good. Like it's the
- 48:15Speaker 1: perfect size yep, like thirty five. I mean it has
- 48:18Speaker 1: hydraulic chouances. Yep, it has all of this stuff. And
- 48:22Speaker 1: I'm like, that's the dream. That's what we've all been
- 48:26Speaker 1: trying to that's what everybody's been asking for forever.
- 48:29Speaker 2: Actory I got this Multimatic one.
- 48:32Speaker 3: Oh man, yeah, GM loan we won for a week,
- 48:35Speaker 3: and I just thought, okay, yeah, I'll just check it
- 48:37Speaker 3: out as whatever.
- 48:38Speaker 2: I fell in love with that truck.
- 48:40Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 48:40Speaker 2: It's a great daily driver, super comfortable. The only thing
- 48:44Speaker 2: that worries me on that truck is that engine is
- 48:47Speaker 2: high strung. I mean, to get that to get three
- 48:49Speaker 2: hundred plus horsepower out of a four cylinder, it's like
- 48:53Speaker 2: it is they're ringing its neck. But everybody's doing that
- 48:56Speaker 2: today though.
- 48:57Speaker 4: Two point seven leaders that's like that's a coke can
- 49:01Speaker 4: more than the Mercedes engine that gets the same I
- 49:04Speaker 4: guess like it's I don't know.
- 49:06Speaker 2: It's just I hear it.
- 49:07Speaker 4: I hear yet.
- 49:08Speaker 2: So that's the only and it's just too early to know.
- 49:10Speaker 2: They might end up being totally reliable. I just like,
- 49:13Speaker 2: if you're getting more than one hundred horsepower per leader,
- 49:17Speaker 2: like you're you're stretching it. Yeah, Whereas like the Quartermaster
- 49:20Speaker 2: is three leaders at two hundred eighty horse or two
- 49:24Speaker 2: hundred and seventy horse power, so it's not working.
- 49:26Speaker 1: Yeah, And I never I never really feel the need
- 49:28Speaker 1: for more power in that car. I mean, they make
- 49:31Speaker 1: a Grenadier with a twin terribov eight. It's called a
- 49:34Speaker 1: g wagon.
- 49:36Speaker 4: Exactly what I what I found though, is I love
- 49:39Speaker 4: horsepower or car nut? I love it.
- 49:41Speaker 3: I had a cheap Wrangler three ninety two. It was
- 49:43Speaker 3: an incredible vehicle, but it was super fast and power.
- 49:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 49:45Speaker 4: Fun, But you just don't but that's it though. You
- 49:48Speaker 4: don't need it, yeah, Like you definitely don't need it
- 49:50Speaker 4: on an overland trip. You don't need it on a trail.
- 49:52Speaker 3: As long as you have enough horsepower that you can
- 49:55Speaker 3: pass a semi going up a hill somewhere, you're good.
- 49:57Speaker 2: To go. I don't.
- 49:58Speaker 3: I don't feel like I feel like too much horsepower
- 50:01Speaker 3: for overlanding it's a burden because you start using too
- 50:04Speaker 3: much fuel.
- 50:05Speaker 2: Yeah, the range issue becomes a big problem.
- 50:07Speaker 3: You're gonna break something because now you're stepping on the
- 50:09Speaker 3: gas on the trail on an obstacle and you might
- 50:10Speaker 3: put a little too much foot in it and you're
- 50:12Speaker 3: gonna break something, which you don't want to do.
- 50:13Speaker 2: Right, So, I don't know.
- 50:14Speaker 3: I think there's I don't know what the right number
- 50:16Speaker 3: there is. I think it's right run around three hundred
- 50:18Speaker 3: and three hundred and fifty. I think too much horsepower
- 50:20Speaker 3: is not a is not a good thing. Although that's
- 50:22Speaker 3: a car guy saying it hurts my soul to say that.
- 50:25Speaker 4: But I but for overland daily drive, horsepower is so easy.
- 50:30Speaker 1: I'm a car nut too, and I'm like less and
- 50:33Speaker 1: less concerned with the horsepower in the vehicle because pretty
- 50:36Speaker 1: much everything these days moves.
- 50:38Speaker 4: And if you want something, if.
- 50:39Speaker 1: You just want like sheer speed, buy an electric car.
- 50:44Speaker 1: You know, it's like, you know, the the V eight
- 50:46Speaker 1: is like a dinosaur now. The internal combustion engine like,
- 50:49Speaker 1: I like him, I like carburetors. I like this stuff,
- 50:52Speaker 1: but like go drive, go drive a Rivian, Go drive
- 50:55Speaker 1: a Rivian.
- 50:56Speaker 2: Are crazy, like still like almost make it blackout.
- 50:59Speaker 4: It's so fast it's insane.
- 51:00Speaker 1: And I've got a buddy Shaheen that has one and
- 51:03Speaker 1: he took it to the dunes in Michigan because he's
- 51:07Speaker 1: living in Detroit now and he's like on the drag
- 51:11Speaker 1: strip in the sand dunes thing like the only guy
- 51:14Speaker 1: that could beat him had like a super tuned Diesel
- 51:17Speaker 1: with paddle tires, and he's like, if you put like
- 51:19Speaker 1: a sand.
- 51:19Speaker 2: Tire, like a paddle tire in this thing, insane.
- 51:22Speaker 4: It would be like, I mean, how are they not?
- 51:24Speaker 1: Where are those videos coming out of out of like
- 51:27Speaker 1: the UAE Versaudi with like you know they do the
- 51:30Speaker 1: patrols where they go like up the crazy big sand
- 51:33Speaker 1: duns in the empty quarter.
- 51:34Speaker 4: Imagine that with a Rivian. It would just be too easy, right.
- 51:38Speaker 2: I drove an RNs and the dunes in California was awesome. Yeah,
- 51:42Speaker 2: that's a great truck.
- 51:43Speaker 3: So we do the Trail Recon summit in Texas every
- 51:45Speaker 3: year and there's been a gentleman that come out every
- 51:47Speaker 3: year with a Rivian and so he's doing the.
- 51:51Speaker 2: Moderate trails.
- 51:52Speaker 3: They're pretty technical trails, and I was just like, I
- 51:54Speaker 3: was like, did today I want to follow you. I
- 51:56Speaker 3: just want to spend some time behind you and watch
- 51:58Speaker 3: that thing and watching that go through obstacles and how
- 52:01Speaker 3: much clearance it has underneath.
- 52:03Speaker 2: I was so impressed with sixteen.
- 52:06Speaker 3: It's incredible and like the trash control just it was
- 52:09Speaker 3: like he was effortless going through some stuff. And I
- 52:12Speaker 3: was like, I don't want an electric vehicle, but if
- 52:14Speaker 3: I did, that's probably the one I would watch.
- 52:16Speaker 2: You know, we'll tell us about the Trailer Recon Summit.
- 52:18Speaker 3: Oh, so that's been something we've been doing for four years.
- 52:21Speaker 3: There's a place called Marris Adventure Park in Texas, just
- 52:24Speaker 3: outside of Amarillo, and it's in the Paladore Canyon, which
- 52:27Speaker 3: is the second largest canyon in the United States. And
- 52:30Speaker 3: we went out there and just met the people that
- 52:33Speaker 3: own the place and they're like, you want to do
- 52:35Speaker 3: an event out here?
- 52:36Speaker 4: I was like, man, I would love to. I would
- 52:38Speaker 4: love to do an event out there. And so it's
- 52:39Speaker 4: very small's amazing.
- 52:41Speaker 3: This year we're only gonna have about one hundred vehicles,
- 52:44Speaker 3: trying to keep it pretty small, but it's trail runs.
- 52:47Speaker 3: So we do there's five groups. There's an easy group,
- 52:50Speaker 3: three moderate groups, and one technical group, and they go
- 52:54Speaker 3: we do go trail runs all day and then we
- 52:55Speaker 3: come back and then you know, sit around campfire kind
- 52:58Speaker 3: of like we're doing here and and the ranch and
- 53:02Speaker 3: just have good camaraderie experiences, bring people together, let people
- 53:05Speaker 3: share their stories. You know, we'll get up there and
- 53:07Speaker 3: talk about some things we do pot like, which is
- 53:09Speaker 3: probably the highlight of them.
- 53:11Speaker 2: It's fun.
- 53:11Speaker 3: So it's just it's a blast. It's Texas isn't close,
- 53:14Speaker 3: so we got to drive to make it happen. But
- 53:16Speaker 3: it's a good it's a good yeah, but.
- 53:17Speaker 4: Texas is close for a lot of people.
- 53:19Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, like for all the folks that maybe
- 53:21Speaker 1: are on the East Coast and Midwest that want to
- 53:23Speaker 1: have that experience in that community.
- 53:25Speaker 4: That makes it a lot more accessible for them.
- 53:27Speaker 2: Yeah. I'm honored that we're going to be doing.
- 53:29Speaker 4: And what time of year do you do that? October?
- 53:30Speaker 1: October? Okay, yeah cool? So where can people find out
- 53:34Speaker 1: more about this event that you're doing.
- 53:35Speaker 3: If you go to my profile trailer recon profile on Instagram,
- 53:38Speaker 3: there's a link right there that you can go learn
- 53:40Speaker 3: about it and buy tickets if you want to come.
- 53:42Speaker 4: We love to have people there. So man, it's October.

- 54:18Speaker 4: I was like, what's this guy like, he's really nice,
- 54:22Speaker 4: but he's your YouTube channel. He can't be nice. No,

- 54:27Speaker 2: You're genuinely a great human being. You've had an incredible
- 54:31Speaker 2: career in the military. You've done so much to inspire
- 54:33Speaker 2: people to get out there on the trails, and I
- 54:36Speaker 2: just have to say, I mean, we're just super honored
- 54:38Speaker 2: to have had you on the podcast.
